Note that from late 1935 through late 1937, most issues appeared in two different versions—one uncensored and the other self-censored. The censored version was identifiable by a star within a box located at the top of the cover. The interior illustrations were typically “toned down” in the censored versions and some even had variant contents. Also in 1941 & 1942, most of the stories were retitled stories, attributed to “fake” authors, from earlier issues (or from other Culture magazines) apparently as part of a fraud by the editors.
Details on these retitled reprints supplied by Glenn Lord. In addition, Kelly Mordaunt identified many of the cover artists.

[]Spicy Detective Stories:   (about)
Spicy Detective Stories was one of the notorious Spicy pulps published by Culture Publications in the late 1930s which concentrated on a simple formula—fast action stories laced with sex. It ran for nine years under that title before the forces of reform forced it to change to the rather more sedate Speed Detective. Note that from late 1935 through late 1937, most issues appeared in two different versions—one uncensored and the other self-censored. The censored version was identifiable by a star within a box located at the top of the cover. The interior illustrations were typically “toned down” in the censored versions and some even had variant contents. Also in 1941 & 1942, most of the stories were retitled stories, attributed to “fake” authors, from earlier issues (or from other Culture magazines) apparently as part of a fraud by the editors.
Details on these retitled reprints supplied by Ben Chapman and Kenneth R. Johnson. In addition, Kelly Mordaunt identified many of the cover artists.

[]Spicy Horror Stories   (about)
This title probably does not exist. It does occur in the occasional magazine checklist but exhaustive research and inquiries have turned up absolutely no information on it. The earliest reference to it is in a Bradford Day checklist of the early 1950’s. Day lists the title as being British and says that it was published in the mid-1930’s, although he has no data on it. Copies do not exist in either the British Library or Oxford’s Bodleian Library, and no known collector or researcher has ever seen a copy of Spicy Horror Stories, so it is likely that this title is apocryphal, and that indexers after Day simply picked up his reference and incorporated it into their own work.

In 1990 Malibu Graphics published an anthology titled Spicy Horror Stories, edited by Tom Mason. This contained eight stories reprinted from Marvel Tales (1), Uncanny Tales (5), and Mystery Tales (2).

One of the infamous “spicy” pulps; this title ran a large amount of fantastic fiction, often half or better of an issue. The large number of reprints in the last couple of years are apparently the result of an embezzlement scheme by two of the editors. Kelly Mordaunt identified many of the cover artists.
