Chums

Country: UK
Total Issues: 2101

Also issued in monthly parts (25th of month); "From November 1920, the monthly part can be reckoned to be a separate publication. It had all the reading matter of the weeklies, but the covers were left out - mostly advert and cover illustrations - and this left anything up to 20 pages to be filled in the monthlies. These were filled by short stories, articles and even serials, which never appeared in the weeklies at all. The Annual was, of course, made up from the monthlies as usual." (Harry Stables).

For a period from 24-Mar-1923 included an 8pp supplement entitled Comrade. "Authors include D.H. Parry, Robert Louis Stevenson, G.A. Henty, Samuel Walkey, G. Manville Fenn, Harry Collingwood, P.G. Wodehouse ("The Luck Stone, 1908 - 1909), Hylton Cleaver, George E. Rochester. It even reprinted SF from Gernsback's magazines." (Mike Ashley).

Chums is still one of the most highly collected of boys' papers due to its distinctive and very attractive illustrated red covers; the complete set runs to 48 volumes. The Annuals (certainly under the Amalgamated Press) were doubly dated (e.g. 1934/35); this included issues from August 1933 to July 1934 and was issued in September 1934 for sale through the Christmas period and into 1935. The 1935/36 Annual was the first to be especially compiled by the editor.

Incorporates: New Boys' World from 6-Apr-1907 Serials indexed in "Through the Years with Chums" by Brian Doyle (Collector's Digest Annual, 1961).
