The Saturday Evening Post
Country: US
Always featured fiction from the output, often short tales or serials
reprinted from other publications.
First golden age was in the late 1840s-1850s when it published (often
pirated) leading US and UK writers, including Charles Dickens, Ouida,
G.P.R. James, Diana Mulock; declined after Civil War and remained a
cheap story paper until bought by Cyrus Curtis in Aug-1897.
Curtis revamped the magazine and circulation grew from 2,231 in 1897 to
726,681 in 1907 and over 2 million by 1922. Artist Norman Rockwell
contributed 323 cover paintings, 1916 - 1965.
Authors include Mary Roberts Rinehart, Clarence Budington Kelland,
Arthur Train, P.G. Wodehouse (early "Jeeves" stories appeared in the
Post first, followed by British publication in The Strand), Conan Doyle
("Maracot Deep" 1927), Morgan Robertson, Stephen V. Benet ("The Devil
and Daniel Webster" 24-Oct-1936), Heinlein, Bradbury, C.S. Forester,
Gerald Kersh, John Christopher.
Circulation rose from 315,000 in 1902, to 2.7 million in 1933, and
almost 3.9 million in 1948.
Note: The latest incarnation seldom publishes fiction, but does run some
short light-hearted stories.
