Circulation peaked at 18,000 in 1868; published much of Braddon's early work, also G.A. Sala and Sheridan Le Fanu; C&W took the magazine more upmarket with fiction by Charles Reade, Wilkie Collins, Mark Twain, Thomas Hardy and early work by Conan Doyle; under White quality declined.

In addition to the monthly issues there were 30 Christmas Annuals published from 1867 to 1896 and 22 Holiday (Summer) Annuals published from 1876 to 1897.
