Introduction:
Erolie Pearl Gaddis was born in Gaddistown, Georgia on March 5, 1895. She married John Sherman Dern in 1931. She wrote as both Peggy Gaddis and Peggy Dern indiscriminately, sometimes swapping the bylines on different editions of the same book. Peggy was probably a family nickname dating from her childhood; since it is not a recognized nickname for either of her given names. I consider it a pseudonym, even though it was probably the name she was known by in everyday life.
According to Contemporary Authors her early career revolved around the entertainment business. She claimed to have appeared on stage and in movies as an actress but I have not found any details of such work. She edited trade journals and fan magazines, presumably in the 1920s; at a later time she edited at least one romance pulp magazine. She is known to have written prolifically for the romance pulps but these magazines are poorly documented and the handful of stories currently known are a drop in the bucket.
As a novelist her work was confined entirely to two closely related genres, virtually all of it written for lending library publishers. For thirty years she wrote traditional romances, almost entirely for one publisher, Arcadia House. For the last ten of those years she wrote principally nurse novels. She also wrote love novels, a somewhat sleazier form of romance that was invented by the lending library publishers. In the 1930s she wrote them for William Godwin, Inc. and in the 1940s for Phoenix Press. By 1951 this genre had been abandoned by the hardcover publishers and found a new home in the proliferating digest-size paperbacks. These publishers faded away by 1955, those that survived shifting to soft core porn. Most of the older authors, like Peggy Gaddis, chose not to follow this direction and fell back on writing traditional romances. In the early 1960s Arcadia House found that there was a mass-market audience for their romances, especially the nurse novels. A flood of Gaddiss novels were reprinted, some of them several times, under a bewildering array of titles and bylines.
Peggy Gaddis passed away on June 14, 1966. For several years her novels continued to be reprinted, but by the mid-1970s tastes in romances had changed and her work gradually faded into obscurity. A number of her works have been reprinted in Large Print editions in recent years but this has failed to produce a revival of interest in her work at large and she has never become a cult author. By the time the first edition of Twentieth Century Romance...Writers was published, in 1982, she was already passé. The only biographical entry in a major reference work is the one in Contemporary Authors, from which the above summary is taken.
This checklist was begun as a side-effect of another, larger, bibliographic project, which included a large number of Gaddiss paperback editions. At some point I threw caution to the wind and decided to catalog all of her books. This has proven to be a daunting task and has not been completely accomplished.
The bibliographic portion of the Contemporary Authors entry, unfortunately, is not very reliable. The list is randomly missing about 40 books, not unusual in such entries, and is sloppy about identifying the exact bylines used on many of the books. Even worse, the 50+ paperback originals Gaddis wrote in the 1950s are all listed under their manuscript titles, very few of which were used on the actual books.
Some standard reference books, like the Cumulative Book Index, do not differentiate between the names Peggy Gaddis and Peggy Dern, making it difficult to determine the exact byline on some books. Several retitled overseas editions are barely documented at all and collation with the originals is difficult to achieve.
A word of explanation is needed about some of the more obscure paperback publishers. In the 1970s a new phenomenon sprang up, involving the large scale reissue, in facsimile, of paperback books originally issued by Belmont Books, Macfadden Books, and Lancer Books, including the latters romance imprint, Valentine Books. Reprints of the first two were issued under the imprint of Unibooks, without book numbers. Lancer Books were reissued as Magnum Books and Valentine Books were reprinted with the same imprint, in both cases using the original book numbers. These imprints were instant remainder publications, marked to sell at 25 to 50 cents, while carrying a higher cover price at which they were never sold. These books were sold to discount department stores, like Woolworths, at a much lower wholesale rate, on a non-returnable basis. The reissue of romances in these series apparently proved so popular that eventually some imprints, like Valentine Books, began to issue new titles, reprinted from hardcovers, that had not been in paperback before. This is a little-documented or understood corner of the paperback industry and a lot more research is needed in this area.
It was not my original intention to include the recent Large Print editions but so many of them cropped up with title changes repeated from the 1960s paperbacks, with no reference to the original titles, that I felt compelled to include these editions as well. It is my understanding that Ulverscoft and Linford are both products of the same publishing company. The Ulverscroft editions are hardcovers while the Linford editions are odd-sized trade paperbacks. As far as I can tell a given book is issued in one form or the other but never both.
This checklist was compiled by accumulating information from the National Union Catalog, the Cumulative Book Index, the OCLC World Catalog, the Catalog of Copyright Entries, various volumes of Paperbound Books in Print, Fiction Catalog, Contemporary Authors, Vintage Australian Paperbacks, Thirty Years of Harlequin, and various paperback price guides, as well as by perusing numerous book dealers ads on the Internet.
The main checklist has 284 different books, listing every edition I could document. The books are listed in alphabetical order, based on the books first title, and all subsequent editions are grouped in the same entry. The exact publication date, as given in the Copyright registrations, is annotated into the first edition information. A list of title changes is supplied as the final section of the checklist for ease in cross-referencing. Most of the paperback editions are listed with their book numbers, but this information was not always available. Any paperbacks that are known not to be numbered are descibed as un.
Books noted with (A) are Australian, ones with (C) are Canadian, and (UK) indicates British books. All other books can be assumed to be U.S. publications, with the exception of Large Print editions, which are noted only as (LP) without a designated country. Ive never seen any books from Sharon; their editions were apparently published in Tel Aviv for US distribution.
A second section lists a number of retitled reprints whose original editions have not, as yet, been positively identified, although a few educated guesses are indicated. The Canadian titles have been whittled down considerably with the help of Canadian collector Jim FitzPatrick, whose efforts are greatly appreciated. Potential collectors should be warned that many of the Canadian editions, especially those of Crow Books and Newstand Library were seriously abridged.
A third section lists phantom titles, listed somewhere as being the titles of published books, which in fact do not exist under those titles.
A short list of errors and misattributions follows.
The final section is a reconciliation of changed titles against their original titles, as an aid to navigating the main checklist.

Other phantom titles:
- Confessions of a Glamour Girl by Gail Jordan, Knickerbocker,
- This is the subtitle of Desirous, listed erroneously as the title in Kevin Hancers Paperback Price Guides.
- The Enchanted Summer, Arcadia, 1960
- manuscript title listed in Contemporary Authors
- Hearts Haven, Arcadia, 1945
- manuscript title listed in Contemporary Authors
- Her Lover, the Devil, Quinn, 1950
- Presumably the manuscript title for Satans Gal.
Erroneous Ascriptions:
- Dinah Mason, Reporter by Peggy OMore, Arcadia, 1957
- Pseudonym of Jeanne Bowman. Copyrighted and renewed with Peggy Gaddis as claimant. This is almost certainly a clerical error by Arcadia House on the original registration which was, inevitably, repeated in the renewal.
- No Fire Can Warm Me by Margaret P. Gaddis, Lancer, 1970
- An original gothic novel, cataloged on the OCLC as a pseudonym of Peggy Gaddis. Gaddis died several years before gothics became popular and her name was not Margaret. I dont believe there is any validity to this attribution.
- The Redemption of Marie Gordon by Cora Lane Sherman, Nielen, 1926.
- Author of 4 novels listed in the the OCLC, this one only is cataloged as a possible pseudonym of Peggy Gaddis. Cora Lane Sherman is known to be a real person; this entry seems to be the result of someones over-active imagination.
- She Wanted Love! by Joan Sherman, Venus 102, 1950
- This was a reprint of Flame in the Wind by James N. Gifford. The bylines were swapped on Venus Books 102 and 103. The result was a Peggy Gaddis novel being published under one of James N. Giffords bylines, see Wife or Mistress, above, and this Gifford novel being published under a Peggy Gaddis pseudonym.
