Science Fantasy & Impulse
Science Fantasy was launched by Nova Publications in 1950 as a
companion piece to New Worlds. For the
first two issue it had a separate editor, Walter Gillings, but from the third issue on
both magazines were edited by John Carnell until they were both sold to Roberts &
Vinter in 1964. At that point the magazine shifted to a paperback format, with Kyril
Bonfiglioli as editor, but he was never happy with the title and, after two years, changed
it to Impulse and restarted the numbering from #1.
This move was not a great success and, after only six months, the name changed
again, to sf Impulse, and Bonfiglioli left the following month. The
magazine struggled on under the editorship first of Harry Harrison & then of Keith
Roberts, but after a total of only 12 issues merged with New Worlds,
which itself folded with the following issue.
For a time in the 1950s and 1960s there was local distribution of Canadian and New Zealand editions,
although these appear to be identical to the UK edition.
Science Fantasy Yearbook, which was
renamed Science Fantasy with the second issue, had no connection with the
earlier magazine and was simply a reprint magazine that drew on the back files of Amazing
Stories and Fantastic Adventures.
Note that, from 1954 to 1964, issues were not formally dated but
notations like "2/60" appeared in the lower right corner of
the contents page of all issues except #7. These have been translated
into dates for the sake of the table below. From 1964 to 1966, the dates
were specified explicitly on the magazine.
