Putnam's Monthly [1853]

Country: US

Subtitled "A Magazine of Literature, Science and Art". Has been called "the best all-round quality magazine ever published in America," though with minimal illustration, and was noted for work by Herman Melville, George W. Curtis, Fitz-James O'Brien, Parke Godwin, James Fenimore Cooper etc; it was likened to an American Blackwood's but more mellow and attractive.

Merged with Emerson's United States Magazine in 1857 to form Emerson's Magazine and Putnam's Monthly then relaunched in 1868 as Putnam's Magazine of Literature, Science, Art, and National Interests only to merge with Hours at Home after three years to form Scribner's Monthly.

Quarry West

Quarry West was founded by Raymond Carver, who taught at Porter College, University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1971. The first four issues were called Quarry; then it was discovered that there was already a Canadian literary journal of that name -- hence Quarry West. Now on an annual publication schedule, Quarry West is a nationally distributed magazine devoted to printing the finest poetry, poetry in translation, fiction, art, essays and reviews available, with a particular emphasis on encouraging quality new voices alongside the best new works of more established writers.
