Born in Williamsfield, Ohio; received a B.A. degree from the University of Rochester; enlisted in the 27th New York Regiment and was wounded in the first battle of Bull Run; commissioned in the 105th Ohio Regiment and injured again at the battle of Perryville; studied law and admitted to the bar of Ohio in 1864; entered politics in 1866; founded the Union Register, devoted to Radical policies, in 1867; served as a judge of the superior court for six years; was “one of the most brilliant of the Carpet-baggers of the South”; died in Bordeaux, France.
