Item Types

The majority of the "active" item types are described in the user documentation for the FictionMags index. This section will discuss types that are used only on books, as well as listing some item types that have been withdrawn in favour of other types, but which may still exist in the data.

Book-Specific Types

an = anthology dd = dos-a-dos volume gn = graphic novel oc = original collection co = collection gc = graphic collection oa = original anthology om = omnibus

Internal & Index-Specific Types

dr = director Used in CF4 only. el = (other) editorial staff Used for other editorial staff in "Publication Info." sections of magazine indexes, but never displayed as such. en = editor name Used for the editor name in "Publication Info." sections of magazine indexes, but never displayed as such. mv = movie Used in CF4 only. no = novel Used in UK files only; translated to n. pu = publisher Used for the publisher name in "Publication Info." sections of magazine indexes, but never displayed as such. qf (reserved for internal use) No defined meaning but should not be used for anything else sw = screenwriter Used in CF4 only.

Obsolete Types

ab = abridgement The item should be listed as it originally appeared with an EB note explaining that this appearance is abridged. ad = adaptation If a play (or similar) is adapted into a piece of fiction, then "sa" should be used; if a piece of fiction is adapted into a play or comic strip (or similar) then the appropriate item type (e.g. "pl" or "cs") should be used with an ED note detailing the story it was adapted from. ai = author's introduction to story "is" should be used instead av = advice column Superseded by "qa" cf = true confession Superseded by "ts" (possibly never used) da = anthology that's half of an Ace Double Superseded by "an or "oa" dc = collection that's half of an Ace Double Superseded by "co" or "oc" dn = novel that's half of an Ace Double Superseded by "n." ga = graphic story adaptation Superseded by "cs" with an ED note describing the adaptation gs = graphic story Superseded by "cs" mn = mosaic novel segment If it is a self-contained segment then the appropriate fiction item type should be used nf = non-fiction Ambiguous as an item type: a more specific type should be used, or "ms" if nothing more specific is available or the type is unknown. May still be used as a book type. rd = radio review Superseded by "rv" (possibly never used) sf = special feature Ambiguous: a more specific type should be used, or "ms" if nothing more specific is available or the type is unknown sp = speech The item should be listed as an article ("ar") with an ED note to say that it is based on a speech given at xxx on yyy tr = translation Superseded by used of normal item type with a translator specified and an ED note describing the original item (if known)
