Initially written mostly by Hall who produced western and naval tales and sketches, plus verse, history, criticism and gossip. Hall was especially interested in the legends of the frontier; also pub'd early work by Harriet Beecher ("A New England Sketch" Apr-1834). Thereafter became mostly a review.
