THE RETURN OF RAVENWOOD!

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers bring back another classic pulp hero from the 1930s in an all new collection of fast paced, macabre adventures of the supernatural.  Meet Ravenwood – Stepson of Mystery!

He is an orphan raised by a Tibetan mystic known only as the Nameless One.  As an Occult Detective he has no equal and is called upon by the authorities when they are challenged by supernatural mysteries.  One of the more obscure pulp characters, Ravenwood – The Stepson of Mystery appeared as a back-up feature in the pages of Secret Agent X magazine.  There were only five Ravenwood stories ever written, all by his creator, the prolific pulp veteran, Frederick C. Davis.

Now he returns in this brand new series of weird adventures, beginning with this volume in which he combats Sun Koh, a lost prince of Atlantis, battles with monstrous Yetis in Manhattan and deals with murderous ghosts and zombie assassins.  Four of today’s finest pulp storytellers Frank Schildiner, B.C. Bell, Bill Gladman and Bobby Nash offer up a quartet of fast paced, bizarre thrillers that rekindle the excitement and wonder that were the pulps.

With a stunning cover by Bryan Fowler and dramatic interior illustrations by Charles Fetherolf, Ravenwood – Stepson of Mystery was designed by Rob Davis and edited by Ron Fortier.  Once again
Airship 27 Productions presents pulp fans with another one-of-a-kind quality pulp reading experience like no other on the market today.

The Suicide Squad in Corpse-Town: America's new air arm, the keystone in her vast defense program: cornered on the brink of destruction! ...Only three men--Kerrigan, Murdoch and Klaw--could prevent disaster, and that grim trio of Death's Volunteers was already living on borrowed, bartered time!

The mystery was a job for the inimitable Suicide Squad-Kerrigan, Murdoch and Klaw. But they were already waging a private, unofficial battle against Nicodemus Largo-the most invulnerable crime-king of them all!

The Suicide Squad and the Twins of Death!: When Blond Otto The Hangman and his Nazi aides told Murdoch that he would soon join the dead Kerrigan and Klaw, he waited until he did--then added the roar of a dead man's weapon to the blazing guns of his ghostly pals!

Blood ‘n’ Thunder and Murania Press
2011 Publishing Schedule Announced!

Blood ‘n’ Thunder editor/publisher Ed Hulse reports that 2011 will be his busiest year yet, with the release of multiple books under his Murania Press imprint as well as a by-popular-demand return to quarterly frequency for BnT.

Murania’s first release of the year will be Ed’s comprehensive history of silent-era movie serials, DISTRESSED DAMSELS AND MASKED MARAUDERS, which was announced several months ago but delayed to include newly acquired material. This deluxe trade paperback, over 300 pages long and crammed with hundreds of illustrations, will ship end of January or beginning of February at the latest.

Murania’s Classic Pulp Adventures reprint line gets underway with the February release of SAVAGES, the first of Gordon Young’s famous Hurricane Williams novels, originally serialized in Adventure magazine. Murania reprints the text from the rare Doubleday hardcover edition, which restored material that had been left out of the pulp version. Also included are an introduction by Young scholar Tom Krabacher and “The Unlisted Legion,” the 1918 short story that introduced the two-fisted Hurricane to pulp readers.

Upcoming titles in the Classic Pulp Adventures series:
  • BAREHANDED CASTAWAYS, J. Allan Dunn’s legendary novel about shipwrecked men who struggle to survive on an island without tools, weapons, or food supplies. Originally published in a 1920 issue of Adventure after being specially commissioned by the magazine’s editors, Dunn’s yarn was a reader favorite that somehow escaped being published in book form—until now.
  • PIRATES OF THE PINES (originally titled FUR PIRATES), A. M. Chisholm’s dazzling tour de force written for a 1915 issue of Street & Smith’s The Popular Magazine. This gripping adventure story quite deliberately appropriates the structure and character types of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and transposes them to the rugged Canadian Northwest. It’s a masterful job of fiction writing that will enthrall readers whether or not they’re familiar with Stevenson’s book.
  • THE MYSTERY OF THE DOUBLE CROSS has the historic distinction of being the first novel ever licensed by a motion-picture production company for adaptation as a cliffhanger serial. Written by Gilson Willets and published in 1910, it weaves an intricate tale of romance, mystery and adventure set in Mexico. Revolving around the struggle for a fabulous inheritance, The Double Cross puts American-born John St. John in close proximity to unscrupulous fortune hunters, a mysterious masked stranger, and the fabled “Golden Senorita” rumored to be descended from a lost Aztec tribe.
Non-fiction Murania Press books scheduled for 2011 release will include THE BEST OF BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER (which collects the best articles from the long-out-of-print first 12 issues of BnT and adds new material to them) and a revised-and-expanded edition of THE BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER GUIDE TO COLLECTING PULPS (which will be half again as long as the original 2007 edition and features a newly written section devoted specifically to recent pulp reprints).

The next issue of
BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER (Winter 2011) will ship in February. It contains articles on Doc Savage by Will Murray and Tom Barnett, Ed Hulse on the making of Gunga Din and the 1917 Hearst-produced serial Patria, pulp and paperback reviews by Gary Lovisi and Mark Trost, a reprint of the first Captain Future comic-book story, and previews of the upcoming Windy City and PulpFest conventions, among other things.

Each BnT issue and Murania Press release will be covered in more detail as they become available for shipping.

CONAN AND THE BATTLE FOR THE LEGACY OF ROBERT E. HOWARD
by Tom Stewart, Cover by Joe Jusko

This book explores what happened to Conan and Howard's work and legacy after the death of Howard.
A 9 x 12 inch, all color 208 page art book detailing the history of Robert E. Howard and his Barbarian Conan through all of the various trials and tribulations of the character; through court battles, different publishers, in comic books and in the movies, up to the present. This all color, profusely illustrated pop culture history is a must for fans of the great Pulp Magazines and of the history of 20th century adventure/fantasy literature.

This book covers the fight for the legacy of Howard, who would own Howard's work and who would profit by divorcing the Texas writer from his most famous creation. Lots of backroom deals, backstabbing, and poorly printed fanzines.

Then, Doc and his team are enmeshed in the atmospheric six-part lost-city thriller, "The Thousand-Headed Man", where they seek a lost expedition in the jungles of Indochina and an ancient treasure guarded by the fantastic Thousand Headed Man.

This collection has been completely remixed, remastered from the original recordings, and is presented in enhanced digital stereo. Also included is a brand new documentary, "The Sound of Bronze: Making 'The Adventures of Doc Savage'", featuring interviews, anecdotes from the cast and crew, and never before revealed details of how the series was conceived and created. Age of Aces - Now available!

"The Iron Ace" by William E. Barrett
In the Misty Skies of WWI France, history is written with flaming guns! And Yank airman Hugh McQuillen had smashed his way into those history books as "The Iron Ace."

Assigned as the C.O. of a Royal Flying Corps squadron, and prowling the skies in his deadly war plane adorned with the Laughing Skull, he was a grim and unrelenting instrument of war who killed Germans with such ruthless efficiency that he became known on both sides of the line as "The Assassin." McQuillen believed there was no decent way to bring men to a violent end, so he would not bow to the "chivalry of the air" practiced by his R.F.C. mates and the Germans. This made the Iron Ace a marked man, and his enemies would stop at nothing to bring an end to his savage reign.

Written by William E. Barrett, the nine tales of "The Iron Ace" appeared in Sky Birds magazine from 1933 through 1934. Barrett is best remembered for his novels, The Left Hand of God and The Lillies of the Field. But he was initially a very busy writer for the pulp magazines. And while much of his work was in the air war mags, he also contributed to the western and detective pulps. One of Barrett's most popular characters appeared in a series of stories in Dime Detective. "Needle Mike" was an undercover crime fighter who posed as a tattoo artist.

"The Iron Ace" is available from Amazon

EGRETS AND OTHER STORIES by Perley Poore Sheehan

Beb Books announces the release of a new collection of stories by Perley Poore Sheehan, EGRETS AND OTHER STORIES. Perley Poore Sheehan was a big fan of the Florida Everglades and the Seminole Indians who lived there. Besides writing letters urging protection of the great swamp, he wrote three vivid and wonderfully mystical stories about the Everglades.

"Egrets"
Poachers threaten the last remaining Egret colony in Florida and the warden hired to protect them.

"The Lone Seminole"
Germans invade the Everglades in radioing shipping information to waiting submarines.

"The One Gift"
Perhaps the best know of these three stories, Blue Otter, a young shaman, rescues a white woman, nurses her back to healths and finds he has fallen in love with her. A love forbidden by the laws of his people. A rescue party finally arrives in an seaplane, but there isn't enough open water for the plane to take off again. So when kidnappers close in on the girl, Blue Otter decides to call the one gift that the Great Spirit promises to all Seminoles.

Throughout these stories is Sheehan's luminous, lyrical depiction of the Everglades, it's changing moods and vast diversity. Here are three stories you won't forget!  $5.00.

Each story is reprinted on 8.5 x 11 paper in easy-to-read type, side-stapled, with color cover.
Postage is $3 for 1 to 3 books. Add 25 cents more for each additional book.

Charles Saunders - New pulp novel coming in Spring 2011!
Charles Saunders, author of the Imaro series, has finished writing a new novel which is an African American take on the pulp heroes of the 1930s. The title of the book is
DAMBALLA. Cast in the mold of the classic pulp heroes, the author describes his new character as the 30s version of a well known cinema tough guy.  “Damballa, like John Shaft, ‘will risk his neck for his fellow man,’” says Saunders. “The difference is, Damballa wears a cloak instead of leather jacket, and uses both ancient African wisdom and modern science in his battle against injustice.”
Airship 27 Productions plans to release this ground breaking pulp thriller in the Spring of 2011.

James Layne: A WEEK IN HELL - Now available!
Some days are like - A Week in Hell
A young flatfoot gets more than he bargained for when called to shake out a brawl. The fight was long gone, but the barmaid was there, cooling. She was coming on like the bedroom flu, he got her digits. She had his number.

Acclaimed author J. Walt Layne kicks off his Champion City series with A Week in Hell (113 pp., tpb, $6.99), an introductory thrill ride across the tracks into the seedy, hardboiled side of a dying blue collar city. Layne first charmed readers in 2006 with Frank Testimony, his deeply effective legal thriller. His small but loyal following tantalized with the promise of the forthcoming series, shall wait no longer.

J.T. O’Connor, author of The Coming of T’Loal, says, "J. Walt Layne is an apt student of the hardboiled style: a bit more literary than Chandler but every bit as hard hitting as Cain and Spillane. He has moved out of literary shadow land and onto the mean streets of Champion City. A Week in Hell will hit you right in the mouth!”

A Week in Hell (Champion City Series #1) hits the ground running.. Beat cop Thurman Dicke makes rounds by day during the hottest July on record. A routine call to sort out a brawl will change his life and what he thinks he knows about the rackets forever.

Editor Shell Wilbye says of Layne's hardboiled debut: "This is a cracking story. Congrats on writing your best so far. An EXCELLENT job...”

J. Walt Layne works as a Substitute Teacher and Home Economist in Springfield, OH. He studied Business and Human Services at Urbana University. He is currently marketing several books and working on his current series. Layne maintains a presence on Facebook and is re-launching his blog.

Dynamite Entertainment, home to several best-selling comic book titles and properties, and Classic Media, a global media company with a portfolio of some of the world's leading entertainment franchises, including The Lone Ranger, and Zorro LLC, announced the publication of the first crossover comic for pop-culture's most-famous masked heroes, The Lone Ranger and Zorro.

Written by Ande Parks, the first issue will also feature covers by Alex Ross and professional wrestling icon-turned-artist, Jerry "The King" Lawler, as well as Francesco Francavilla and Tom Yeates! The comic is scheduled to arrive in stores in March 2011.

The legendary masked crimefighter called Zorro, now in his sixties, has hung up his cape and sword. Living on a peaceful ranch in the new state of California, Don Diego tends to his cattle, breaks horses, and enjoys the company of his wife. When a renegade band of Confederate bushwhackers attack a nearby Indian settlement, though, Don Diego cannot just stand by and let innocents be slaughtered. Zorro heads back into action again... for the last time. Guest starring another legendary masked lawman — The Lone Ranger!

In the raging flame of personal tragedy, men are sometimes forged into something more than human. Life was bliss for millionaire adventurer Richard Henry Benson until the fateful day crime and greed took away his wife and younger daughter and turned him into something more than human. Driven by loss, compelled by grief, he becomes a chilled impersonal force of justice, more machine than man, dedicated to the destruction of evildoers everywhere. A figure of ice and steel, more pitiless than both, Benson has been forged into an avatar of vengeance, possessed of superhuman genius and supernormal power. His frozen face and pale eyes, like ice in a polar dawn, only hint at the terrible force the underworld heedlessly invoked upon itself the day they created… The Avenger!

HOBO STORIES By Patrick & Terence Casey
6x9-inch perfect bound; 332 pages, $20.00 postpaid
Introduction by John Locke

Hobos spoke their own language, lived by their own code. Veterans of the road enslaved younger runaways, to use them as servants, to dispatch their innocent faces to back doors to beg. True hobos scorned brethren who accepted work instead of handouts. To do nothing, to pay nothing, was the hobo dream, the true measure of freedom, the true test of authenticity.

Patrick and Terence Casey wrote five stories set in Hoboland--that is, the backroads, railyards, and seedy hobo jungles of America where tramps traveled and congregated. The initial story appeared in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST (1914), the remainder in the leading pulp ADVENTURE (1916-21). Together, they constitute a grand saga of life in a strange, often violent underworld of yesteryear. HOBO STORIES collects the series.

The amazing Caseys . . . they were two brothers from San Francisco who sold regularly to the pulps as teenagers. Soon thereafter, they conned their way into the prestigious pages of ADVENTURE with tales of actual jungles--in Borneo and Central America. Included in HOBO STORIES is a biography of the Caseys, an examination of the roots of their hobo fiction, and, from the pulp ROMANCE (1920), their revelatory short story about the adventures of a teenage pulp writer.

Written by Arvid Nelson; Art by Carlos Rafael
Covers: Arthur Adams (20%), Paul Renaud (20%), Joe Jusko (20%), Sean Chen (20%) & Alé Garza (20%)

Spinning off from the incredibly successful Dynamite Entertainment Warlord of Mars series, Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris #1 will arrive in comic book stores March 2011!

Martians live forever -- everyone knows that. So what was Dejah Thoris doing all those hundreds of years before John Carter arrived? Four hundred years before the events of Warlord of Mars took place, Dejah's nation of Helium was divided into two warring city-states. An unscrupulous overlord from afar encouraged that rivalry to his own advantage, until he discovered a terrible secret from Mars' ancient past beneath Dejah Thoris' capital. A secret to kill for!

"Burroughs left so many tantalizing breadcrumb trails in the first few Mars novels, but he never followed most of them," says writer Arvid Nelson.  "This series is going to follow some of those trails. We're going to see how Dejah Thoris' kingdom of Helium rose to preeminence. We're going to see her first suitor. And we're going to see Dejah herself kick some ass. She's a great character, totally deserving of her own series. It's great having her in a more active role."

Adrienne Roy, 57 (1953-2010), 22-year Batman/DC Comics color artist
Adrienne Roy, whose colorful storytelling was a fixture throughout two decades of Batman and other best-selling DC comic books, lost a year-long battle with cancer on December 14th.

The premier DC Comics colorist during the "Bronze Age of Comics" provided dramatic coloring and storytelling for nearly all of the company's top titles, but is best remembered for her 15-year, 189-issue run on Batman, her 16-year, 202-issue run on the company's flagship Detective Comics, and a 14-year tenure on The New Teen Titans, plus many years coloring other Bat-titles including Brave and the Bold, Robin, Batman and the Outsiders, Gotham Knights and Shadow of the Bat.

Though her initial Bat assignments were for legendary editor Julius Schwartz, she was recruited to color the entire Batman line by editor (later DC president) Paul Levitz, who explains, "Adrienne combined the ability of a set designer to create beauty with the ability of a lighting designer to create drama and storytelling focus, and wrapped it in a sweet professionalism. No wonder we editors chose her again and again, keeping her on favorite titles like Batman literally for decades."

Adrienne Roy's coloring enhanced the artwork of comicdom's top artists, from Golden and Silver Age legends like Jack Kirby, Irv Novick, Gene Colan and Superman's Curt Swan to modern greats like George Peréz, Jim Aparo, Don Newton, Keith Giffen and Todd McFarlane.

The Verona, NJ native was a veteran of science fiction, comics, Star Trek and horror film conventions, and was one of the first female comics fans to break into the ranks of New York comics professionals. After marrying and moving to Manhattan, she briefly assisted her husband, DC Comics staffer Anthony Tollin, on his own freelance work before being recruited for solo assignments by vice president/production manager Jack Adler, who recognized by her third story that she would soon be "DC's best colorist." Under the tutelage of Adler and DC president Sol Harrison, Roy quickly moved into the ranks of DC's top freelancers, with continuing assignments on a variety of titles including Superman, Green Lantern, All-Star Comics (featuring the Justice Society), G.I. Combat, House of Mystery and Batman Family. She was also the regular colorist on DC's World's Greatest Super-Heroes and Batman syndicated newspaper strips.

"For more than a decade, it seemed like Adrienne Roy was coloring virtually every DC comic," recalls inker and comics historian Jim Amash, "but in truth she was only coloring most of the top sellers, the titles that everyone was reading!" Adrienne was the only DC freelancer with her own desk in the company's Manhattan offices, and was the first colorist signed by DC to exclusive, multi-year employment contracts.

Equally adept at superhero, humor, war and mystery/horror storytelling, Adrienne Roy was a fixture on Mike Grell's Warlord and Marv Wolfman and George Peréz's New Teen Titans, the first "Bronze Age" DC publications to make major inroads against the Marvel Comics sales juggernaut.

However, she quickly developed a special affinity for Batman after becoming regular colorist of Detective Comics in 1978. Later, as a new wave of Batmania swept the world with the release of Tim Burton's blockbuster Batman films and an animated TV series, the single constant fixture on the Batman comic titles was Adrienne Roy, whose tenure as regular Bat-colorist continued through six editors and dozens of creative Bat-teams, totaling more than 600 Batman family comics including the blockbuster "Death of Robin" and "Knightfall" storylines. Her byline has appeared on more Batman credits than anyone except creator Bob Kane, a record that is unlikely to ever be equaled. "Adrienne made it easy to take her for granted because she was quiet, pleasant, reliable--never any fuss with her--and her work was always exemplary," former Batman editor Dennis O'Neil recalls. "It¹s only in retrospect that I realize what a blessing she was to my editing."

In addition to her own DC assignments, Adrienne co-colored many more DC series including Crisis on Infinite Earths, Justice League of America, Infinity, Inc., Flash Gordon, The Phantom, Doc Savage, The Shadow Strikes and Ragman with her husband, along with the U.S. Army's P.S. Magazine ("the Preventive Maintenance Monthly") and National Lampoon comic strips. She also painted several LP album covers.

A Magna Cum Laude fine art graduate of William Patterson University, Adrienne Roy was an early female pioneer in world of tattooing and body art, voted "Most Beautifully Tattooed Female" at the 1982 National Tattoo Convention and featured as the centerfold in the debut issue of Tattoo magazine.

"Adrienne was the personification of color, professionally and personally," recalls former Batman assistant editor Jordan B. Gorfinkel. "She was talented. She was ebullient. Even her hair color and of course her tattoos were colorful. And there was her smile, so generous and genuine that I can picture it in my memory as if she were in front of me right now. In every way, she made four colors into an infinite rainbow."

Adrienne lived her final years in Austin, TX, and is survived by her daughter Katrina Tollin of Austin, Texas; brother Normand Roy of Montclair, NJ; former husband and art partner Anthony Tollin of San Antonio, TX; and more than 50,000 pages of colorful comic book storytelling featuring the World's Greatest Super-Heroes.

Written by SUPERMAN, iZOMBIE, and STAN LEE’S STARBORN New York Times bestselling scribe Chris Roberson, the adventure begins this May in an all-new, all-original FREE COMIC BOOK DAY edition that’s not simply a preview of the July series, but a prequel that will excite longtime Elric fans and serves an accessible entry point for the curious who have never experienced Moorcock’s saga.

Elric of Melnibone must preserve the Balance and save the entire Multiverse from ruin. But no sooner has his journey begun than he is waylaid by dark forces and lost on the Moonbeam Roads. Elric finds himself stranded on a world where Chaos holds sway and where change is the only constant. Heroes are forced into action far and wide, but will they fight on the side of Law or Chaos?

ELRIC: THE BALANCE LOST FCBD EDITION ships this May for Free Comic Book Day, featuring an original prequel story by New York Times bestseller and SUPERMAN writer Chris Roberson and cover art by Erik Jones that leads directly into the first issue of the new ELRIC: THE BALANCE LOST this July.

Lots of news and updates to share, so hang on . . .

TERROR IN THE HOUSE: THE EARLY KUTTNER, VOLUME ONE has been in circulation for just over a month and is our fastest-selling title ever. Thanks to everyone who ordered. Our new distribution deal with Diamond Comics has lifted sales of recent titles, and we may sell out of this book sooner-than-usual. Here are some bloggers who have commented:  Ed Gorman's Blog    George Kelly

With the good news comes the bad news, and we humbly apologize for the numbering errors that plague the Table of Contents page of TERROR IN THE HOUSE.  A .pdf errata sheet with the corrected page numbers may be downloaded here.

In our last update, we announced that the following titles would slip into 2011:
THE COLLECTED CAPTAIN FUTURE, VOLUME TWO
THE UNIVERSE WRECKERS: THE COLLECTED EDMOND HAMILTON, VOLUME THREE
SHANNACH---THE LAST: FAREWELL TO MARS

Here's the latest on those titles:
We are still waiting for the prefatory matter for SHANNACH, so no firm date for release at this time
UNIVERSE WRECKERS lost two stories due to the massive amount of uncovered material for the ephemera-filled appendix
UNIVERSE WRECKERS and CAPT. FUTURE #2 will go to the printer together and the plan is to have them ready to ship by February 20th.

The awesome "early-bird" special at Haffner Press for AN INSIDE LOOK (an exclusive chapbook for customers who pre-pay for TERROR, SHANNACH, UNIVERSE WRECKERS, and CAPT. FUTURE #2) will be active until January 20th (or end sooner, if TERROR IN THE HOUSE sells out).

While waiting for delivery of UNIVERSE WRECKERS and CAPT. FUTURE #2, we will be getting the lead out on our line of Limited Editions:
DETOUR TO OTHERNESS - Updated with new cover art and final contents.  It's got *that* "Hogben" story, yeah!
     THE VAMPIRE MASTER
     STARK AND THE STAR KINGS
TERROR IN THE HOUSE (no webpage yet, but expect more stories, interior illos, and some real rarities)

We want to say thanks to those of you who are taking advantage of the "_Super_ early-bird" special for advance orders of:
TALES FROM SUPER-SCIENCE FICTION edited by Robert Silverberg
THUNDER IN THE VOID by Henry Kuttner
AT THE HUMAN LIMIT, THE COLLECTED STORIES OF JACK WILLIAMSON, VOLUME EIGHT

This special is still active and we'll announce the contents of the BONUS chapbook for this offer later this month. Meanwhile, we are now taking orders for individual copies of these titles. We've made a webpage for Williamson's AT THE HUMAN LIMIT here: http://www.haffnerpress.com/jw8.html and we'll have a longer press release on this title next week.

We're close to locking the contents of THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF THE JACK WILLIAMSON LECTURESHIP.
This is shaping up to be an amazing book.  Contents to follow next week.

WOLVES OF DARKNESS, THE COLLECTED STORIES OF JACK WILLIAMSON, VOLUME TWO is now out of print (trade and limited).
WOLVES joins Volumes One, Five and Six of the series as unavailable.  And stock is low (ie less than 100 copies) on Volumes Three, Four, and Seven (there are a handful of copies of the Limited Editions of Volumes 3, 4, 6, and 7). You have been warned.

Later this month we be making the first donation to the Kinsman Historical Society from sales of the chapbook EDMOND HAMILTON / LEIGH BRACKETT DAY 2010.  This $10 chapbook will remain for sale until the 2011 EH-LB day (and they make great holiday gifts!).

Until then . . .

THE LONE RANGER AVENGES THE DEATH OF ZORRO! - Coming in March!
One of comicdom's first and greatest heroes, Zorro, will have fallen in battle, sacrificing his life to save his people.  Upon learning of this tragedy, it falls unto the future hero of the Wild West, The Lone Ranger, to avenge the death!

"This series is a really exciting opportunity for me," says writer Ande Parks.  "Not only do I get to write two truly legendary American heroes, but I get to write a defining moment for one of them... his death. This series isn't just about the death of Zorro, though. It's about the enormous legacy that he leaves behind. When a hero dies, he leaves behind a legion of people that have been touched by his deeds. In this case, Zorro's legacy has touched a young Lone Ranger.  Unfortunately, the bad guys that have ended Zorro's life are a small but powerful army who plan on continuing to victimize the Native Americans Zorro was trying to help. Zorro's legacy, even as embodied by The Lone Ranger, may not be enough to defeat this army of renegade Civil War bushwhackers."

Paizo Publishing: PLANET STORIES - Coming in February!
Battle in the Dawn: The Complete Hok the Mighty
By Manly Wade Wellman with an introduction by David Drake
In the 1930s, a very unusual tale appeared in the influential Amazing Stories magazine. Unlike the usual yarns of robots and interstellar travel, this “Battle in the Dawn” featured the brutal exploits of Hok, the first hero of humanity, in his struggles against the savage Neanderthals. Written by rising pulpster Manly Wade Wellman (Who Fears the Devil?), who would later achieve fame for his American folktales of Silver John and beat out William Faulkner for a prestigious writing award, the story and its brave hero struck a chord with Amazing’s readers, and several additional adventures followed, taking Hok through the prehistory of mankind to battle unrelenting cavemen, explore the lost city of Atlantis, discover new technology, and chart a new destiny for humanity.

Now, for the first time ever, Planet Stories presents a complete authorized collection of all of Wellman’s rare Hok the Mighty tales, packed with unfinished story fragments, all-new illustrations, and a brand new introduction written by Wellman’s longtime friend, fantasy author David Drake!

Full stories include:
Battle in the Dawn
Hok Goes to Atlantis
Hok Draws the Bow
Hok and the Gift of Heaven
Hok Visits the Land of Legends
Day of the Conquerors

Included are "The Love of Oloana," "The Day of the Conquerors" (which, while it doesn't star Hok, does feature Hok's tribe, the Flint People) and the untitled Hok the MIghty story fragment originally published in ECHOES OF VALOR II that Wellman was working on when he died.

352-page softcover trade paperback, ISBN-13: 978-1-60125-289-0,
$15.99

Robert E. Howard Foundation
Paul Herman sends everyone a Christmas present!

The Neverending Hunt is the award-winning REH bibliography I created back in 2005, based on twenty years of building my own lists. This book contains more than twice as much data as The Last Celt. This 600+ page tome includes information about every REH story, poem, and letter, as well as where they are printed, be it book, periodical, chapbook, or other source. I started the website HowardWorks (www.howardworks.com, now operated by the REH Foundation) to attempt to load all this information online. And while those who have managed the site have done fabulous and unceasing work adding more information, after five years all the information and listings still are not loaded. These people have day jobs and real responsibilities, after all. Add to that the fact that my personal lists are modified on average twice a week, every week, and it is clear that HowardWorks may never catch up.

So, in order to give scholars and fans access to as much information as possible, I’ve decided to periodically upload my latest current listings as a free-to-download pdf file. Note that the current version is over 650 pages, and the file is over 2MB. I think it would make a nice ebook to have in one’s reader, to have at hand when needed. Note that it does not include pictures of covers, those can be found at HowardWorks. The same for ISBNs. But the more complete data set is found in TNH. And just me personally, I find it easier to find what I’m looking for quickly when it is all in a single document to search. And regardless, it’s always better to have two sources than one.

Anyone who wants to may download it, and even print a copy, if they want, but for personal use only, not to sell. If someone wants to generate their own bigger and better bibliography, starting with this and adding much more, or roll it into a more academic format, have at. And as I said, I’ll be updating the posted document periodically. Note the date on the document is American style (month-day-year).

Questions, complaints, suggestions, corrections, should all be directed to me.

Robert E. Howard Foundation Press - Now available!
“So Far the Poet . . .”
Tevis Clyde Smith is one of the central figures in the biography of Robert E. Howard. The two met at Brownwood High School in 1923 and were soon writing stories together. When Howard returned to Cross Plains, the pair began exchanging letters and visiting each other’s homes. They both contributed to The Tattler, the Daniel Baker Collegian, and The Junto. Because Smith saved the letters Howard wrote to him, we have a much better picture of Howard the man than we might otherwise. In later years, Smith penned several biographical essays about his old friend and began work on a full-blown biography—sadly, never finished.

The Robert E. Howard Foundation is pleased to present “So Far the Poet . . .” and Other Writings, by Tevis Clyde Smith. This collection contains all of the known pieces that Smith wrote about Howard, contributed to Howard fan publications, or co-authored with Howard. It also contains many of the pieces Smith wrote while Howard was still alive, items from The Tattler, Daniel Baker Collegian, The Junto, Dallas Morning News (one including a reference to Howard), contributions to Truett Vinson’s Lone Scout publication, The Toreador, and the few surviving letters from Smith to Howard, several presented here for the first time. Snippets from Howard’s correspondence and quotes from Post Oaks and Sand Roughs, Howard’s semi-autobiographical novel, are provided to give context.

This is a print-on-demand book–not a numbered collector’s edition–with an Introduction by Rusty Burke, cover design by Jim Keegan, and edited by Rusty Burke and Rob Roehm.

WARLORD OF MARS #3 - Arriving in comic shops December 22nd!
Written by Arvid Nelson; Art: Lui Antonio
Covers by J. Scott Campbell (50%), Joe Jusko (50%), Lucio Parrillo (1-in-15),
Patrick Berkenkotter (1-in-10)

We — and John Carter — dive into this issue head-first. At long last he arrives on Mars and meets the green Martian warrior Tars Tarkas. Carter butts heads with the brutal greens pretty quickly, but he's got an edge on them — Mars's weaker gravity means he's got superhuman strength. Who said you can't beat the truth into somebody?

32 pages, Full Color,  $3.99

WARLORD OF MARS: DEJAH THORIS #1 - Coming in March!

The Lion of Cairo by Scott Oden - Now available!
On the banks of the ageless Nile, from a palace of gold and lapis lazuli, the young Fatimid Caliph Rashid al-Hasan rules as a figurehead over a crumbling empire. Cairo is awash in intrigues. In the shadow of the Gray Mosque, generals and emirs jockey for position under the scheming eyes of the powerful grand vizier, Jalal; in the crowded Souk, these factions use murder and terror to silence their opposition. Egypt bleeds and the scent draws her enemies in like sharks: Shirkuh, the swaggering Kurd who serves the pious and severe Sultan of Damascus, and Amalric, the Christian king of Jerusalem whose insatiable greed knows no bounds.

Yet, the Caliph of Cairo has an unexpected ally—an old man who lives on a remote Asian mountaintop, a place where eagles fear to tread. This benefactor, the Shaykh al-Jabal, the Old Man of the Mountain, holds the ultimate power of life and death over the warring factions of the Moslem world, and he sends his greatest weapon into Egypt.

He sends Caliph Rashid al-Hasan, a single man. An Assassin. The one they call the Emir of the Knife . . .

Day Keene made his debut under his real name of Gunard Hjerstedt in 1931 with “Pure and Simple” in Detective Fiction Weekly. With the advent of World War II, Keene returned to the pulps and launched into a frenzy of production that would not only get him cover billing, but would make him a household name among aficionados of the detective story. For the next dozen years Keene would seemingly have a story a month appearing somewhere. His mainstay was Popular Publications where he featured frequently in Dime Mystery and Detective Tales. Keene also branched out into other publications such as Ace G-Men, Short Stories, Strange Detective, and even Weird Tales. Here is the first volume of a new series that will collect all of Keene’s detective pulp fiction. $20 (softcover) or $40

Subterranean Press: Up the Bright River By Philip Jose Farmer
Completed at the printer!
Just waiting on enough clear space in the warehouse for delivery.

Subterranean Press is proud to present a new, roughly 120,000 word gathering of Philip Jose Farmer’s singular tales! This first posthumous collection of the short fiction of Philip Jose Farmer is a celebration of the impressive variety of his prodigious output, from the space adventures he published in the science fiction magazines of the 1950s through the 1970s, to his acerbic satires of religion and medicine, to his fictional biographies and memoirs, to his beloved Riverworld.

Appearing for the first time in a Philip Jose Farmer collection are his last three “Riverworld” stories—featuring characters from his own family history--as well as the “memoir” of Lord Greystoke which he claimed to have merely edited. Other highlights include “Attitudes,” the first of the Father Carmody stories; “The Two-Edged Gift,” which introduces the fictional science fiction writer Leo Queequeg Tincrowdor; “Toward the Beloved City” (about which its original editor said he had never before really understood the Book of Revelations); and “Father’s in the Basement,” a little-known Gothic horror tale which is also a satire of the writing profession.

Farmer created some of the most famous worlds in science fiction, but he also wrote in many worlds, and readers familiar only with his best-known classics may find a few surprises among these tales.

2010 / 2011 Echoes Awards - Ric Croxton and Art Sippo!

Ric Croxton and Art Sippo are the recipients of the ECHOES Award for 2010/2011. Their dedication to the preservation of pulp culture has been clearly displayed over the past year since Ric Croxton started the Podcast a couple of years ago. Art Sippo has been a co-host for over a year now, and both men's knowledge and dedication to the pulp community clearly comes through in their interviews with writers, artists, and publishers in the current pulp field. The pulp fan can learn of current books on the market, as well as what's in the works from their favorite writers and publishers. The weekly Podcasts covers comics and movies, plus their Thursday night pulp interviews.

Ric and Art's love of the pulps, and devotion to the pulp community has earned them the respect from their contemporaries that puts them above a mere fan, and it is with great honor that we bestow the ECHOES Award for 2010/2011 to these fine gentlemen.

The Echoes Award was created in 1992, the second award to honor members of the pulp community, the first being the Lamont. From 1992 until 1997, the Award consisted of both plaque and paper certificate. Between 1998 and 2004, only the paper certificate was given out, then the Award ceased until 2009, at which time it was resurrected. The Award is not voted on, but the determination of who is doing the most to promote the pulps and pulp fandom is selected by Tom & Ginger Johnson. It is not a writer or artist award, those awards are being given out by Airship27 and Pro Se. The Munsey Award has replaced the Lamont, honoring individuals in the pulp community.

The plaque returns in 2009. With the resurgence of pulp interest, and the sudden escalation in print on demand  - POD - technology, there appeared to be a revival of the pulps, so we decided to take another look at the feasibility of presenting the Echoes Award once more.

2009: Matt Moring
2010/2011: Ric Croxton & Art Sippo

We are already looking at several names for the 2012 Echoes Award, but no decision will be made until the proper time.

Mike Chomko Books, and Adventure House.

The Big Book of Bronze #3 - Now available!
The Big Book of Bronze #3 is finally released!  I would like to thank all of the authors whose contributions make this year's BBoB so incredible.  Doc Savage and Lester Dent have never been explored so thoroughly and from so many new and exciting angles as they do in the BBoB3.  The subjects are too many to highlight and the contributors too prominent to single out over any other.  Take a look below at the Table of Contents and if there isn't a subject, author or artist that makes you clamor to get your hands on a copy then you may not be a true Doc Savage fan.

Like last year's Big Book of Bronze, BBoB #3 features cover art by Tim Faurote.  However, this time he has gone all out and created a fantastic wrap-around cover that must be held in your hands to be appreciated.  In addition to Mr. Faurote, interior illustrators include Scotty Phillips and Kez Willson.

Learn more about Doc Savage than you ever thought possible by ordering your copy of
BBoB #3 and add this beautiful book to your Doc Savage reference books.

Black Coat Press - The December releases are now available!

THE GARDENS OF THE APOCALYPSE by Richard Bessière, adapted by Brian Stableford
It was then the something emerged from a deeper pool and suddenly loomed up in front of them. At the tip of a vegetable stem, formed of little scaly protuberances with yellow and black spots, an almost-human head was swaying feverishly. It was unthinkable, astounding, at the very limits of possibility and horror.  The humans froze, as if fascinated by that atrocious, bloated head bristling with long, dull, flowing hair. It was half-way between human and animal, to judge by the expression in its large, almond-shaped eyes, and the powerful fangs that bordered a lipless mouth in the form of a sucker.

Guy de Maupassant
Guy de Maupassant is recognised as a giant of nineteenth century French literature, a protégé of Flaubert, an inspiration to H. P Lovecraft, among others, and an acknowledged master of the short story—a form in which he was very prolific. Indeed, this special Leonaur three volume collection of his excursions into the supernatural and strange contains almost 140 stories.

M. R. James
There has been much written about Montague Rhodes James. To those who know anything of the literature of the supernatural his name and work stands on the highest tier in the Pantheon of the greatest writers of the genre. James brought his horrors to his readers genteelly wrapped in the fine prose of an academic often describing the apparently logical lives and worlds of fictional nondescript academics and antiquarians. Brilliantly, his menaces creep into the safe lives of unsuspecting, undynamic personalities—into the very fabric of the ordinary in notably commonplace scenarios. In this lies the James genius, for he understood well that it is the subtle menace of approaching horror that builds the most terror and that what we all fear most, born out of our primeval fear of darkness, is the unknown and the unfathomable.

The Collected Supernatural & Weird Fiction of M. R. James

The Lion of Cairo by Scott Oden - Arriving in bookstores December 7!

The one they call the Emir of the Knife . . .

SPIES OF DESTINY by John Grange
Featuring JIM ANTHONY - SUPER DETECTIVE
Son of a Comanche princess with powers of deduction greater than the average man.

SPIES OF DESTINY -- The Red Dragon roared and murder followed murder! It struck at foreign diplomats. It struck at Jim Anthony and the girl he loved. And it led him on a trail of danger and intrigue to the world's spy capitol--Lisbon!

I.O.U. MURDER -- The grief of the little old lady wasn't recorded on the police blotter, but it was a factor Jim Anthony took into account in the murder case. Maybe it meant more to him than the wiles of a beautiful, scheming widow ...

THE VICE CZAR MURDERS by Franklin Charles

ROCK HAD A NICE EYE FOR A WELL TURNED LEG, BUT HE ALSO HAD A SELECTIVE MIND, PREFERRING JUST ONE PAIR OF LEGS AT A TIME INSTEAD OF A WHOLE FOREST OF THEM.

Bill Rock went to the burlesque show, on a hunch that he could gather a little information his boss, the District Attorney, needed in his fight on the vice ring. The fourth girl from the left was a likely looking one to Bill. He made a date to see her, though going backstage led to a row with Mullins, the manager. Bill had to kock him out, which was going to be the start of plenty of trouble for this "D.A.'s dick."

Edited by John Locke

In an era of odd magazines, Macfadden's GHOST STORIES (1926-31) was a standout of the strange. It tapped into occult interest by presenting haunted tales that may or may not have been true. If they were true, then GHOST STORIES was testament to the presence of spirits in every exciting arena, the Western Front, gangland, aviation, the Klondike, the circus, the theater; not coincidentally, all the varied settings that pulp stories employed.

The personnel that created GHOST STORIES, though not well remembered today in most cases, were an uncommonly talented and fascinating group. They include poets and scholars, war heroes and war correspondents, adventurers and Bohemians. A few were titans of magazine publishing and editing. A few developed into prolific pulpsters; a few became bestselling authors; a few went Hollywood; one earned a Pulitzer Prize for fiction. And because it's GHOST STORIES, a few led haunted lives: within these pages appear two murderers, a murder victim, a suicide, and several casualties of tragic accidents.

Volume 1 presents 19 spooky tales from GHOST STORIES, complete with original illustrations. Extensive nonfiction material includes the history of GHOST STORIES, and detailed biographies of every GHOST STORIES editor, and every author whose stories appear in Volume 1.

Volume 2 presents 15 eerie tales from GHOST STORIES, complete with original illustrations. Extensive nonfiction material includes detailed biographies of every author whose stories appear in Volume 2, and every GHOST STORIES cover artist. Also included is a gallery of all 64 GHOST STORIES covers.

All stories complete with original illustrations.

PRO SE ANNOUNCES NEW ANTHOLOGY LINE FOR 2011!
Pro Se Productions, publisher of the monthly PRO SE PRESENTS magazine line (including the rotating PECULIAR ADVENTURES, FANTASY AND FEAR, and MASKED GUN MYSTERY titles) announces that it will begin publishing Anthologies in 2011. Unlike the magazines, these will be in book form and will contain four 15,000 word stories per book, each book with a different theme.

"We're very fortunate," states Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of Pro Se Press, "to have worked with so many talented writers and artists in the last year.  The decision to continue our magazine line and then add anthologies essentially came out of that talent pool.  We have writers eager to write concepts, both their own and some that are Pro Se house concepts and artists who can't wait to bring images from those tales to life.  We have four great anthologies planned and are ready to welcome writers and artists, both those we've worked with and anyone new to Pro Se, to submit work for these collections."

The first anthology, THE NINTH CIRCLE-VOLUME ONE, is scheduled for March, 2011.  This collection focuses on a concept created by Hancock that centers around a crime ridden precinct and borough in a city that shuffles its misbegotten and forgotten to THE NINTH CIRCLE.  This anthology will include tales from Hancock as well as noted pulp authors Barry Reese, Joshua Reynolds, and Derrick Ferguson!

The other collections still have openings for stories.  The anthologies scheduled to follow this debut include-
DEAD MAN WALKEN - Yet another concept from Hancock, this western adventure has enough intrigue and mystery to choke a horse!  A town is savagely attacked by a ruthless band of outlaws and most of the citizens killed, including the promising sheriff elect, Fitch Walken.  A month after the massacre and all the bodies are buried, Fitch Walken stumbles into town, the last three months of his life gone from his memory! The mystery deepens when Walken's grave is exhumed...and he's IN THE COFFIN!  What follows is the classic struggle of a man to find out who he is, what happened to him, and just which side of good and evil he will stand on!

THE BLACK FEDORA - A BOOK OF VILLAINS - This is just what it says it is, an anthology dedicated to stories about the bad guys we love to hate.   These stories will focus on original villains and of course the heroes they face, these tales similar in style to the FU MANCHU stories of the past.  But this isn't only for yellow perils!!  Any type of villain that populates pulp is welcome to try on THE BLACK FEDORA!

HIGH ADVENTURE HISTORY - Ever wanted a chance to write a masked man enforcing justice in ancient Egypt?  Or a larger than life genius and his team of heroes righting wrongs in renaissance Italy?  Or mad scientists terrorizing the Arizona desert towns of the Old West?  Then here's your chance!  HIGH ADVENTURE HISTORY will include stories of traditional pulp concepts and tropes plopped into our very own past, pre 1900!  Take your favorite pulp stereotype and wrap it up in ancient or not so ancient places and people and join us in HIGH ADVENTURE HISTORY!

LEAGUE OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD
Day Keene made his debut under his real name of Gunard Hjerstedt in 1931 with “Pure and Simple” in Detective Fiction Weekly. He followed with a handful of detective tales and a couple of western yarns in 1932 and continued to write for the pulps until 1935, when he turned to radio to earn his living.

The Serial Squadron: DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST - Coming December 20th!
THE MOST THRILLING WESTERN SERIAL EVER MADE
AND THE LONGEST SOUGHT-AFTER BY FANS IS ON ITS WAY TO DVD RELEASE!!!

Winston Churchill once said, "My tastes are simple. I'm easily satisfied with the best."
Well, folks, you're about to see what that really means.
There's no doubt whatsoever that DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST is one of the BEST serials ever.

This DVD is being prepared from a new high-quality, extremely stable and clear digital transfer from collector Jack Mathis's original print which he was authorized to print down from the Republic Pictures master.
The serial was never re-released or shown on television because apparently shortly after its original release parts of it if not the entire serial were sold off as stock footage, which may have resulted in the loss of some of the original reels of sound.

The missing audio in Chapters 1, 6, 7, and 8 has been replaced here with authentic sound effects and dubbing for missing dialogue. Most of the replacement audio and music comes from the serial itself and is seamlessly integrated with existing audio and newly stripped-in sound effects. Meaning it all sounds pretty good and you may not be able to tell repaired sections of the film from ones with original sound.

2-DVD Set
Black and White; 196 minutes
12 Chapters and Original Theatrical Trailer
Produced by Eric Stedman, the Serial Squadron and Brigham Young University Film Archive Includes a fairly beat-up but complete version of the original theatrical trailer

Anticipated release date: About December 20, 2010
