2010 / 2011 Echoes Awards - Ric Croxton and Art Sippo!
Ric Croxton and Art Sippo are the recipients of the ECHOES Award for 2010/2011. Their dedication to the preservation of pulp culture has been clearly displayed over the past year since Ric Croxton started the Podcast a couple of years ago. Art Sippo has been a co-host for over a year now, and both men's knowledge and dedication to the pulp community clearly comes through in their interviews with writers, artists, and publishers in the current pulp field. The pulp fan can learn of current books on the market, as well as what's in the works from their favorite writers and publishers. The weekly Podcasts covers comics and movies, plus their Thursday night pulp interviews.

Ric and Art's love of the pulps, and devotion to the pulp community has earned them the respect from their contemporaries that puts them above a mere fan, and it is with great honor that we bestow the ECHOES Award for 2010/2011 to these fine gentlemen.

Ric Croxton

The Echoes Award was created in 1992, the second award to honor members of the pulp community, the first being the Lamont. From 1992 until 1997, the Award consisted of both plaque and paper certificate. Between 1998 and 2004, only the paper certificate was given out, then the Award ceased until 2009, at which time it was resurrected. The Award is not voted on, but the determination of who is doing the most to promote the pulps and pulp fandom is selected by Tom & Ginger Johnson. It is not a writer or artist award, those awards are being given out by Airship27 and Pro Se. The Munsey Award has replaced the Lamont, honoring individuals in the pulp community.

Echoes Award (large plaques)

1992: Nick Carr/Ron Wilber/Francis Saint Martin
1993: Steve Mitchell/Kevin Duncan
1994: Burt Leake/Ray Capella
1995: David Burton/Shawn Danowski
1996: Bill Thom/Albert Roberts
1997: Will Murray/Albert Tonik

1998 – 2004 (At the time we were slowly phasing out our involvement, and felt the Lamont was the only award necessary, so only awarded paper certificates, and somehow misplaced our records from that period.)

The plaque returns in 2009. With the resurgence of pulp interest, and the sudden escalation in print on demand  - POD - technology, there appeared to be a revival of the pulps, so we decided to take another look at the feasibility of presenting the Echoes Award once more.

2009: Matt Moring
2010/2011: Ric Croxton & Art Sippo

We are already looking at several names for the 2012 Echoes Award, but no decision will be made until the proper time.
Tom & Ginger Johnson.

Age of Aces - Now available!

"The Iron Ace" by William E. Barrett
In the Misty Skies of WWI France, history is written with flaming guns! And Yank airman Hugh McQuillen had smashed his way into those history books as "The Iron Ace."

Assigned as the C.O. of a Royal Flying Corps squadron, and prowling the skies in his deadly war plane adorned with the Laughing Skull, he was a grim and unrelenting instrument of war who killed Germans with such ruthless efficiency that he became known on both sides of the line as "The Assassin." McQuillen believed there was no decent way to bring men to a violent end, so he would not bow to the "chivalry of the air" practiced by his R.F.C. mates and the Germans. This made the Iron Ace a marked man, and his enemies would stop at nothing to bring an end to his savage reign.

Written by William E. Barrett, the nine tales of "The Iron Ace" appeared in Sky Birds magazine from 1933 through 1934. Barrett is best remembered for his novels, The Left Hand of God and The Lillies of the Field. But he was initially a very busy writer for the pulp magazines. And while much of his work was in the air war mags, he also contributed to the western and detective pulps. One of Barrett's most popular characters appeared in a series of stories in Dime Detective. "Needle Mike" was an undercover crime fighter who posed as a tattoo artist.

"The Iron Ace" is available from Amazon
Mike Chomko Books, and Adventure House.

 AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS
Imaro creator Charles R. Saunders joins the aircrew!

Charles R. Saunders, one of the most respected fantasy adventure writers in the field, has joined Airship 27 Productions to create a black pulp hero.  Saunders is best known for his series of novels featuring Imaro, the black warrior of an ancient, mythological Africa.  His work has been compared to being equal parts Robert E. Howard and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Saunders and Airship 27 Editor, Ron Fortier, have been friends for many years.  Saunders had been working for company which packages titles for Cornerstone Book Publishers as a proof-reader.  It was the beginning of his first exposure to the world of pulps.  One he enjoyed a great deal.  Enough to offer Fortier an idea for a novel featuring a 1930s black avenger along the lines of the Shadow and the Spider.

“I was ecstatic when Charles brought up the idea,” says Fortier.  “One of the less savory aspects of the pulps was their inherent racism.  The pulps of the 1930s reflected a prejudicial ignorance that was representative of the country’s attitude during those times.”  Today’s modern pulp writers and editors often grapple with this sensitive issue as whether or not to depict it accurately in their stories.  Some opt to ignore it altogether.
“So that was the challenge,” Fortier continues.  “Could Charles give us an African American hero and make it work in an authentic 1930’s New York setting?”

DAMBALLA, the name of the book, is Saunders’ response to that question. Cast in the mold of the classic pulp heroes, the noted author describes his new character as the 30s version of a well known cinema tough guy.  “Damballa, like John Shaft, ‘will risk his neck for his fellow man,’” says Saunders. “The difference is, Damballa wears a cloak instead of leather jacket, and uses both ancient African wisdom and modern science in his battle against injustice.”

Airship 27 Productions plans to release this ground breaking pulp thriller in the Spring of 2011.

Arkham House: BAKER STREET IRREGULAR - Now available!
BAKER STREET IRREGULAR is a mystery and espionage tale told by a member of a whimsical Sherlock Holmes club born in a speakeasy, as Woody Hazelbaker undergoes America's political struggles in the 1930s and Second World War in the '40s, stretching from the Great Depression's worst year to the beginning of the Cold War. A young New York lawyer, Woody gets a cold dose of reality from a gangster client he keeps secret from the world, then puts stratagems he learned to use when he and other Baker Street Irregulars react to Hitler's war against Europe's democracies. Not only the Irregulars but Woody's marriage are strongly divided over isolationism when Churchill's Britain fights on alone. But Woody and his friends join British Intelligence in a covert campaign to circumvent America's neutrality laws, leading eventually to treason, espionage and murder. In a series of wartime intelligence missions, Woody wages a clandestine war of his own to solve the disappearance of a woman he loved the day after Hitler's invasion of Russia. His quest takes him from the White House to London's Cabinet War Rooms, and finally Germany's battlefields, then back again to the nerve center of America's cryptologic campaign against both the Axis and Soviet Union. The mystery's solution turns him inside out-and how he brings his bitter quest to an end is a masterpiece of ruthlessly satisfying deviousness.

Gabriel Hunt - News update from Charles Ardai!
Apologies for the long silence on the Hunt front. As some of you may know, Dorchester Publishing, the publisher we've been working with over the past half dozen years, first to put out our Hard Case Crime line of crime novels and then, more recently, to publish the Gabriel Hunt series of adventure novels, fell on hard times this past summer and is still digging out from under. As a result, they temporarily stopped publishing new books, and the consequence was that the sixth Hunt novel -- HUNT THROUGH NAPOLEON'S WEB -- didn't come out in October as scheduled.  We've been in talks with Dorchester about the fate of that book and the line as a whole, and I wanted to bring you up to date.

Happily, the news is good: In a classic, Hunt-like example of snatching survival from the jaws of certain doom, Dorchester will resume publishing paperback novels in 2011, albeit in the larger 'trade' paperback format (typically about 5 inches by 8 inches) rather than the smaller 'mass market' format (about 4 by 7 inches). You wouldn't think that extra inch in either direction would make much difference, but apparently it does for various distribution-related reasons. Alas, it also means that anyone who has the first five Hunt novels in mass market format won't be able to get the sixth in matching size -- and being a collector and a purist myself, I know how annoying that is. But on the positive side, the plan is to reissue all the earlier Hunt books in the new, larger trade size, which should give the whole series a new chance to reach a wide audience.

We don't have a definite date from Dorchester yet for when the trade editions will start arriving in stores, or what the schedule will be, but as soon as we do, we'll let you know. (Yes, if you look on Amazon.com, you'll see a projected pub date of August 8, 2011 for HUNT THROUGH NAPOLEON'S WEB. I'm not sure whether to believe that or not. We'll keep you posted.)

In the meantime, you might be interested to know that a company called AudioRealms is releasing the Hunt novels in audiobook format.  They started with HUNT THROUGH THE CRADLE OF FEAR (a personal favorite of mine...), and I have to say that the performance by reader Jim VanDusen is first rate. The unabridged reading runs 8 hours, so you've got several car rides worth of adventure in store for you! And AudioRealms is working on the other Hunt novels as we speak -- hopefully you'll be able to get all six before too much longer. If you'd like to try CRADLE OF FEAR, you can get it on CD or download it to your computer immediately as an mp3. Just go to AudioRealms and click on the Hunt cover on their home page.

And e-book editions of the first 5 titles are still available, with the e-book of #6 scheduled to come out at the same time the paperback edition hits stores.

So...Gabriel Hunt is still alive and kicking. He's taken a bit of a beating, but this is one man who knows how to get up again when he's down. Stay tuned for more news -- and for more adventure.

The Lion of Cairo by Scott Oden - Coming December 7, 2010!
On the banks of the ageless Nile, from a palace of gold and lapis lazuli, the young Fatimid Caliph Rashid al-Hasan rules as a figurehead over a crumbling empire. Cairo is awash in intrigues. In the shadow of the Gray Mosque, generals and emirs jockey for position under the scheming eyes of the powerful grand vizier, Jalal; in the crowded Souk, these factions use murder and terror to silence their opposition. Egypt bleeds and the scent draws her enemies in like sharks: Shirkuh, the swaggering Kurd who serves the pious and severe Sultan of Damascus, and Amalric, the Christian king of Jerusalem whose insatiable greed knows no bounds.

Yet, the Caliph of Cairo has an unexpected ally—an old man who lives on a remote Asian mountaintop, a place where eagles fear to tread. This benefactor, the Shaykh al-Jabal, the Old Man of the Mountain, holds the ultimate power of life and death over the warring factions of the Moslem world, and he sends his greatest weapon into Egypt.

He sends Caliph Rashid al-Hasan, a single man. An Assassin. The one they call the Emir of the Knife . . .

The Movie Serial Companion: Book One - Recommended!
THE MOVIE SERIAL COMPANION Book One is the first of two books about the classic cliffhangers that thrilled the multitudes during the first half of the 20th century. The book starts off with afive-chapter history of America’s film serials that runs for 62 pages and covers both the silent and the sound film eras. The text is easily read, engaging, informative, and insightful. My interest never flagged and I learned many things that I was not previously aware of. For instance, I did not know that most serials had two directors, one shooting while the other prepared the next days work, or one doing location scenes while the other did interiors. Following the beginning chapters of the book is a 225 page annotated listing of the American serials of the silent era. The listing is done alphabetically by serial title. Most of the serials merit at least a full page which includes the date of the serial, the studio, the director(s), a listing of the players, a listing of the chapter titles, a synopsis of the story, and a brief commentary. Each listing is accompanied with numerous stills of scenes from the serial and of the players. Some of the entries also include the one-sheet advertising for the film or magazine covers featuring the serial or its players. Each serial entry averages at least 3-to-4 illustrations. Illustrations are in black and white and full color throughout. All-in-all, this book is obviously a labor of love and a welcome addition to my library. I look forward to the publication of the second book in the series.

Night Shade Books: THE BOOK OF CTHULHU - In the works!
John Joseph Adams is editing THE BOOK OF CTHULHU for Night Shade Books, and putting out a call for recommendations of Cthulhu/Mythos fiction.

The purpose of this project is to solicit recommendations of Cthulhu/Mythos stories from readers and writers of Cthulhu/Mythos fiction, to assist in selecting the contents of a reprint anthology I'm assembling for Night Shade Books (which will likely be called The Book of Cthulhu, and will probably be released sometime in fall 2011). Suggestions of short fiction are obviously my primary interest, but feel free to suggest novels as well, as I may include a "For Further Reading" appendix in the anthology.

Pulp 2.0 Press: RADIO WESTERN ADVENTURES
The Kindle Edition is now available!

Features an unpublished Lester Dent story!
Pulp 2.0 Press Mad Pulp Bastard Bill Cunningham announced today that the publisher is adding a never-before-seen Lester Dent tale to its upcoming wild west book release RADIO WESTERN ADVENTURES (RWA). Dent of course is the world-famous pulp writer of the 30’s and 40’s who created the legendary DOC SAVAGE and THE AVENGER pulp characters. This wild west tale, “Snare Savvy” written in 1932 will join Donald F. Glut’s cover tale, “Who Really Was That Masked Man?” to create a western “double feature” tribute to Jim Harmon, the Old Time Radio historian and author, to whom this special book is dedicated.

The contract for “Snare Savvy” was negotiated by the author’s agent, noted pulp writer and historian Will Murray on behalf of the Dent estate. The story is a classic western featuring Dent’s smart alec cowboy character Haw Kain who rides into town and a whole mess of trouble when he goes up against greedy land grabbers looking to strike it rich.

“We are pleased as punch to be able to add Dent’s ‘Snare Savvy’ to Radio Western Adventures,” said Cunningham. “ It makes an already unique book like RWA that much more special to western and pulp fans. As I read it I could easily see Roy Rogers and Dale Evans as the lead characters Haw Kain and Genie Quayle. Their banter matched perfectly, each giving as good as he or she got. I’m ecstatic over the prospect of publishing a pulp master like Dent’s work, and grateful that Will Murray thought Pulp 2.0 would be a good publisher for the tale.”

Radio Western Adventures will be published on Amazon’s Kindle platform for digital reading and will later come out as a print release via Createspace. The Kindle edition will feature both stories as well as an essay tribute to Jim Harmon whose love for radio western heroes was well known amongst fans. This digital edition will also include several photos resurrected from Don Glut’s archives showing the profound influence these radio cowboys had on the author and his peers. Pulp 2.0 Press’s print edition will include all of the above plus even more bonus features exclusive to the print version. Both versions will feature a stunning cover by artist Nik Macaluso (www.scripttease.tv) who created the fantastic blaxploitation cover art for Pulp 2.0’s first release BROTHER BLOOD (also by Glut).

The Lost Treasures of the Pulps #46 - THE SUMURU OMNIBUS
The Sumuru Omnibus consists of five novels written in the 1950s by Sax Rohmer (1883-1959), the mystery story writer famed for introducing into the realm of crime and mystery fiction the disturbing figure of Dr. Fu Manchu, "the devil incarnate in one man," some of whose adventures are collected in The Book of Fu Manchu. Other of this author’s mystery novels appear in the Sax Rohmer Omnibus. If today there seems to be something passé about this "sinister Chinaman," there is nothing at all passé about another of Rohmer’s literary creations, the lesser-known but even more intriguing figure of the mysterious and seductive woman who is called ... Sumuru.

Sumuru! A femme fatal of undetermined background but of undeniable power and beauty, Sumuru is an international "woman of mystery" who heads the clandestine Order of Our Lady which inspires beautiful and clever woman to recruit handsome and brilliant men to bring about an esthetic revolution in world affairs, one that will initiate an era of peace, beauty, and prosperity in place of what we have today: war, ugliness, and want.

Robert Tinnel (writer) • Mark Wheatley (art & cover)
Fire! Blood! Sex! Corruption! Flying fists and burning lead! The romance of adventure and the conflict of romance. They called it "Black Tuesday"—October 29, 1929, when share prices on the New York Stock Exchange collapsed. By winter the homeless were crowding the Hooverville camps, and once-wealthy men were walking the streets. This is the story of one man's journey from wealth and power—to poverty and another sort of power—as his city is blasted by a spree of lawlessness. They called him LONE JUSTICE. And his story is the stuff of legend… and it concludes here.

Robert E. Howard: A Collector's Descriptive Bibliography of American and British Hardcover, Paperback, Magazine, Special and Amateur Editions, with a Biography by Leon Nielsen
Foreword by Damon C. Sasser
In the same way that Tolkien is considered the father of epic fantasy, so to is Robert E. Howard considered the father of the fantasy genre of sword and sorcery. Howard is among a select group of now-revered writers who published primarily in pulp magazines. Pulps continued publishing Howard material posthumously, and his first hardcover book appeared in 1937, a year after his early death at the age of 30. Anthologies, books, comic adaptations and movies based on his work are still being brought out. Howard created one of the most popular of all fantasy characters, Conan. Other famous characters included King Kull of Atlantis, the Puritan adventurer Soloman Kane, the female warrior Red Sonya, and the Pict Bran Mak Morn.

This guide is an invaluable resource about Howard, with information for every known published work. Initial chapters provide a biography, discuss Howard’s literary legacy, and give basic tips about collecting Howards writings. The main body of the work is a bibliography of Howards published works from 1925 through 2004. Each entry includes a description and known details including publisher, date, print run, and estimated value. A thorough index locates the publication of every Howard story or poem.

COLLECTED FANTASIES VOL. 5: THE LAST HIEROGLYPH by Clark Ashton Smith
The Last Hieroglyph is the fifth volume of the five volume Collected Fantasies series. Editors Scott Connors and Ron Hilger have compared original manuscripts, various typescripts, published editions, and Smith's notes and letters, in order to prepare a definitive set of texts.

This series presents Smith's fiction chronologically, based on composition rather than publication. The editorial decision to present these finely crafted tales chronologically, as opposed to thematically, was made in order to present Smith's fiction as part of a continuum - Smith's style evolved as he grew older, and gained access to the commercial markets. The ebb and flow of his prose over the course of his lifetime can be charted via the five volumes of this series.

We who make up his audience have been waiting for him to finally write enough stories to fill a Bianca Jones collection. Let the dancing in the library aisles begin!"     C.J. Henderson

THE LAST OF THE GREAT SWASHBUCKLERS: A BIO-BIBLIOGRAPHY OF RAFAEL SABATINI.
Jesse F. Knight and Stephen Darley

A biography and comprehensive bibliography of novelist Rafael Sabatini (1875-1950) is being presented here for the first time anywhere. Sabatini is one of the most prolific and widely read novelists of the twentieth century, specializing in making history come alive through his fictional characterizations and his unique ability to use history as a background for fiction. Sabatini, half Italian but living and writing in England, was the master of romantic historical novels and has rightly been called by Jesse Knight "The Last of the Great Swashbucklers." He was so immersed in his writing of historical fiction that he often referred to himself as a "man out of his own time." Not only did he write interesting and well-told stories of romance and adventure, but he inspired movies that were just as popular has his books. Sabatini's three most popular swashbuckling stories, still being read today, are Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk, and Scaramouche, and each has been made into at least two movies. No author has better captured the imagination of so many with fiction filled with intrigues, escapes, romantic loves, devilish plots, and sword play.

This new book includes a thirty-page illustrated biography of the life of Sabatini written by the late Jesse F. Knight, who was the foremost expert on his life and works. It also contains a bibliography of the first US and UK editions, as well as other significant editions, of all forty-seven of his books, prepared by Stephen Darley. The bibliography also identifies all of the short story collections that have been published either in the US, the UK, or both. It describes all of the dust jackets, with color photos of many, which are important to collectors and sellers.

Lansdale’s UNDER THE WARRIOR STAR is the tale of Brax Hooker, a freelance journalist whose world travels in search of adventure lead him to a secret laboratory in the Rocky Mountains where a rogue scientist is attempting to create a universe in minature. Having come to believe his life has lost meaning, Brax agrees to be the first traveler into this new Universe, venturing into a forest world of strange plants, weird creatures and deadly warriors. There Brax leads a life of adventure, discovering danger, a ton of surprises, and the love of his life under the hazy blue light of an alien sun.

Driven by loss, compelled by grief, The Avenger is a chilled impersonal force of justice, more machine than man, dedicated to the destruction of evildoers everywhere.

This collection features new prose stories of The Avenger by such luminaries as Will Murray, Robin W. Bailey, Matthew Baugh, Joe Gentile, Paul Kupperberg, Howard Hopkins, Mark Ellis, Ron Fortier, and David Michelinie.

The Compleat Deteckative Memoirs of Philo Gubb, Esquire by Ellis Parker Butler
There are forty stories by Ellis Parker Butler; 37 written for The Red Book Magazine about his ludicrous paper-hanger-detective, Philo Gubb, graduate in twelve complete lessons of the Rising Sun Correspondence School of Detecting.

That’s surely a record—37 stories about the same character in the same magazine! The reason, of course, is simple: Mr. Butler has used his wonderful facility for writing humor and added a rare sense of detective-mystery plot-making. Each of the Philo Gubb situations, handled seriously, might have made a good straight detective story.

And how did the accident affect the time war between the two shadowy cosmic combatants?

SPIRIDON by André Laurie, adapted by Michael Shreve
André Laurie was a one of Jules Verne’s collaborators, a pioneer of science fiction as well as a prolific writer, militant journalist and even politician. In Spiridon (1907), a young surgeon discovers an island off the coast of Corsica inhabited by giant, intelligent ants. Their king, Spiridon, eager to learn more about humanity, goes to Paris where, using his advanced knowledge, he begins effecting miraculous cures before being unmasked by jealous competitors. Forced to protect himself, Spiridon reveals his alien nature and becomes a killer. Spiridon, a non-humanoid alien gifted with knowledge, scientific curiosity, but no human emotions, the victim of mankind’s fears, is a ground-breaking science fiction character and a striking departure from both Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.

Doc Con XIII - November 13, 2010!
Fans of Bronze, it's just over one week away from Doc Con XIII. Are you ready?

We're trying to get a head-count of how many will be attending, so please drop me a quick e-mail to let me know you'll be there Saturday (and if you'll be able to join us Friday night). Also let me know if there's a change to your presentation or if you have something you'd like to present.

We've got a great lineup for the con. We've also got a special treat: We'll do a video linkup with the Gotham Pulp Collectors Club to say hello.

The GPCC will be celebrating their fifth anniversary on Nov. 13, so they should have a good turnout, too. Among the usual attendees are Robert Lesser (of "Pulp Art" fame), Ed Hulse (who edits Blood 'n' Thunder zine), Chris Kalb (proprietor of the Doc Savage website The 86th Floor and The Spider Returns), Mark Halegua (of Pulps 1st and soon-to-be author), David Saunders (son of pulp artist Norman Saunders and a pulp art historian himself), dealer Rick Hall, and collectors Andrew Porter, Leo Doroschenko and Atticus Gannaway. Who knows who might be there!

Back to the lineup. Here's what's planned:

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12

Courtney Rogers has kindly offered his house as the Friday night base for Doc Con. We'll venture out for dinner, return to the Rogers Radio Studios for a Doc Savage radio show re-enactment, then spend time visiting.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13

The big gathering gets underway at 9:30 a.m. at Jay Ryan's home. (Feel free to start arriving around 9 a.m.)
On the bill this year (order has not been set):

- A discussion about Arizona State University students¹ essays on Doc Savage/Prof. Challenger (from ³Lost World²), by Paul Cook
- A look and discussion about Scotty Phillips' pulp/paperback cover reproductions, by Rob Smalley
- Doc¹s vest vs. Batman¹s utility belt (as well as their other gadgets), by Steve Ringgenberg

- A presentation by Howard Wright, publisher of Bronze Gazette
- A look at ³Monk Mayfair as Doc Savage¹s Id,² by Fred Forino
- Something puzzling from the Doc Con quiz master, Glenn Horner
- Something having to do with the Doc Savage Method of Self Development, by Jay
- A look at the forgotten Doc Savage TV script, by Bill Lampkin
- A video retrospective of Doc Savage comic books, with contributions by Howard, Jay, Courtney Rogers and me
- A virtual meet-up with the Gotham Pulp Collectors Club

After dinner, we'll screen a video looking back at the pulp era, then spend the evening visiting, talking Doc Savage and all things pulp.

Big thanks go to Jay Ryan and Courtney Rogers for allowing us to invade their homes for Doc Con weekend. (And letting us take a look at collections!)

WHAT TO BRING
- $20 is the admittance fee (which includes lunch and a copy of "The Big Book of Bronze #3").
- One or more Doc Savage/pulp-related things to trade during the raffle time.
- Giveaways, if you have them.
- Doc or pulp-related items to sell (if you have them).

Remember, drop me an email at azdoccon@thepulp.net to let me know if you'll be there Friday night or Saturday; and if there's been a change to your presentation (or if you'd like to do one, it's not too late).  Doc Con XIII will be a terrific weekend. Hope you can attend!

The Mongoliad - Now available online!
The Mongoliad is a rip-roaring adventure tale set in 1241, a pivotal year in history, when Europe thought that the Mongol Horde was about to completely destroy their world; only a small band of warriors and mystics stand in the way of utter defeat and subjugation by the great Khan. On top of being an exciting story, The Mongoliad is also the beginning of an experiment in storytelling, technology, and community-driven creativity.

The adventure begins with a serial novel of sorts, which is unfolding over the course of a year or so. Neal Stephenson, Greg Bear, and other great authors are writing the core of the story, but we're also working closely with artists, film-makers, game designers, and other folks to to bring the story to life in ways that can't be done in any single medium.

The Mongoliad is available on the web and via iPhone and iPad apps. Android and Kindle apps are in the works.

The core of The Mongoliad is a subscription service, but you can check some of it out for free right now.

Ghost Stories: The Magazine and Its Makers: Volume 2
7x10-inch perfect bound; 272 pages, $24.00 postpaid

Edited by John Locke

In an era of odd magazines, Macfadden's GHOST STORIES (1926-31) was a standout of the strange. It tapped into occult interest by presenting haunted tales that may or may not have been true. If they were true, then GHOST STORIES was testament to the presence of spirits in every exciting arena, the Western Front, gangland, aviation, the Klondike, the circus, the theater; not coincidentally, all the varied settings that pulp stories employed.

The personnel that created GHOST STORIES, though not well remembered today in most cases, were an uncommonly talented and fascinating group. They include poets and scholars, war heroes and war correspondents, adventurers and Bohemians. A few were titans of magazine publishing and editing. A few developed into prolific pulpsters; a few became bestselling authors; a few went Hollywood; one earned a Pulitzer Prize for fiction. And because it's GHOST STORIES, a few led haunted lives: within these pages appear two murderers, a murder victim, a suicide, and several casualties of tragic accidents.

Volume 1 presents 19 spooky tales from GHOST STORIES, complete with original illustrations. Extensive nonfiction material includes the history of GHOST STORIES, and detailed biographies of every GHOST STORIES editor, and every author whose stories appear in Volume 1.

Volume 2 presents 15 eerie tales from GHOST STORIES, complete with original illustrations. Extensive nonfiction material includes detailed biographies of every author whose stories appear in Volume 2, and every GHOST STORIES cover artist. Also included is a gallery of all 64 GHOST STORIES covers.

All stories complete with original illustrations.

REH: TWO-GUN RACONTEUR - Margaret Brundage, Grand Mistress of the Weird Tales!
The REH: TWO-GUN RACONTEUR blog has posted an article on Margaret Brundage.

During the 1930s, getting your story illustrated on the cover of Weird Tales by Margaret Brundage was a prize coveted by most of the magazine's contributors, and Robert E. Howard was certainly no exception. There is little doubt that he would purposefully insert a scene of a nude or nearly nude damsel in distress, often writhing at the business end of a whip, to give his story an edge in the race for the cover painting.  Other authors were also on the bandwagon  and  frequently hastily added or modified a scene just to catch the attention of editor Farnsworth Wright, who personally selected the scene for the cover illustration.
