Age of Aces - Now available!

"The Iron Ace" by William E. Barrett
In the Misty Skies of WWI France, history is written with flaming guns! And Yank airman Hugh McQuillen had smashed his way into those history books as "The Iron Ace."

Assigned as the C.O. of a Royal Flying Corps squadron, and prowling the skies in his deadly war plane adorned with the Laughing Skull, he was a grim and unrelenting instrument of war who killed Germans with such ruthless efficiency that he became known on both sides of the line as "The Assassin." McQuillen believed there was no decent way to bring men to a violent end, so he would not bow to the "chivalry of the air" practiced by his R.F.C. mates and the Germans. This made the Iron Ace a marked man, and his enemies would stop at nothing to bring an end to his savage reign.

Written by William E. Barrett, the nine tales of "The Iron Ace" appeared in Sky Birds magazine from 1933 through 1934. Barrett is best remembered for his novels, The Left Hand of God and The Lillies of the Field. But he was initially a very busy writer for the pulp magazines. And while much of his work was in the air war mags, he also contributed to the western and detective pulps. One of Barrett's most popular characters appeared in a series of stories in Dime Detective. "Needle Mike" was an undercover crime fighter who posed as a tattoo artist.

"The Iron Ace" is available from Amazon
Mike Chomko Books, and Adventure House.

Arkham House: BAKER STREET IRREGULAR - Coming November 22nd!
BAKER STREET IRREGULAR is a mystery and espionage tale told by a member of a whimsical Sherlock Holmes club born in a speakeasy, as Woody Hazelbaker undergoes America's political struggles in the 1930s and Second World War in the '40s, stretching from the Great Depression's worst year to the beginning of the Cold War. A young New York lawyer, Woody gets a cold dose of reality from a gangster client he keeps secret from the world, then puts stratagems he learned to use when he and other Baker Street Irregulars react to Hitler's war against Europe's democracies. Not only the Irregulars but Woody's marriage are strongly divided over isolationism when Churchill's Britain fights on alone. But Woody and his friends join British Intelligence in a covert campaign to circumvent America's neutrality laws, leading eventually to treason, espionage and murder. In a series of wartime intelligence missions, Woody wages a clandestine war of his own to solve the disappearance of a woman he loved the day after Hitler's invasion of Russia. His quest takes him from the White House to London's Cabinet War Rooms, and finally Germany's battlefields, then back again to the nerve center of America's cryptologic campaign against both the Axis and Soviet Union. The mystery's solution turns him inside out-and how he brings his bitter quest to an end is a masterpiece of ruthlessly satisfying deviousness.

This book is scheduled to be released November 22, 2010.
Price: $39.95

The Best From Adventure Volume 1
Edited and with an introduction by Doug Ellis

Adventure Magazine first appeared in late 1910 and soon, attracting top name authors, became renowned for the type of fiction its name implied. It grew into a powerhouse in the genre fiction field, and was later dubbed by Time magazine, the "No. 1 Pulp." But in its early years, the magazine printed a surprisingly wide variety of fiction types—from westerns to light-hearted comedy, from South Seas tales to adventures set in the deepest jungles—to even works that could be deemed science fiction.

Culled from its first 26 issues, this collection brings together 24 of the best tales that appeared therein, including rarely or never-before reprinted works by Talbot Mundy, Damon Runyon, Rafael Sabatini, William Hope Hodgson, R. Austin Freeman, James Francis Dwyer, Frank L. Packard and others.

Included are:
Introduction by Doug Ellis
Adventure by H. Bedford-Jones

The People of the Pit

"In general . . . the Munsey publications did more to publish weird fiction than any other
magazine enterprise of the early 20th century."

H.P. Lovecraft to Richard F. Seawright, March 31, 1932

Long before the stories in WEIRD TALES sent shivers down the spine, far in advance of the groundbreaking Dracula, Frankenstein and similar Universal horror films of the 1930s, Frank A. Munsey's pulp magazines were thrilling their millions of readers with edge-of-your-seat tales of terror by fledgling authors who would go on to dominate American popular literature.

Collected within these pages are 15 thrillers by A. Merritt, Francis Stevens, Sax Rohmer, Tod Robbins, Damon Runyon, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Talbot Mundy, George Allan England and others, many reprinted since for the first time their original magazine appearances as long as a century ago.

Included are:
The People of the Pit by A. Merritt
Behind the Curtain by Francis Stevens
Number Thirteen (excerpt) by Edgar Rice Burroughs
The Orchid Horror by John Blunt
The Tenth Question by George Allan England
Disappointment by Achmed Abdullah
The Pretty Woman by Owen Oliver
The Living Portrait by Tod Robbins
An Offer of Two to One by Talbot Mundy
Beyond the Violet by J.U. Giesy
The Elixir of Life by C. Langton Clarke
The Mystery of the Shriveled Hand by Sax Rohmer
Fear by Damon Runyon
Monsieur de Guise by Perley Poore Sheehan
The Ship of Silent Men by Philip M. Fisher, Jr
With a foreword by Robert Weinberg, (author of Horror of the 20th Century)

Edited and with an introduction by Gene Christie.

Doc Con XIII - November 13, 2010!
Fans of Bronze, it's just over two weeks away from Doc Con XIII. Are you ready?

We're trying to get a head-count of how many will be attending, so please drop me a quick e-mail to let me know you'll be there Saturday (and if you'll be able to join us Friday night). Also let me know if there's a change to your presentation or if you have something you'd like to present.

We've got a great lineup for the con. We've also got a special treat: We'll do a video linkup with the Gotham Pulp Collectors Club to say hello.

The GPCC will be celebrating their fifth anniversary on Nov. 13, so they should have a good turnout, too. Among the usual attendees are Robert Lesser (of "Pulp Art" fame), Ed Hulse (who edits Blood 'n' Thunder zine), Chris Kalb (proprietor of the Doc Savage website The 86th Floor and The Spider Returns), Mark Halegua (of Pulps 1st and soon-to-be author), David Saunders (son of pulp artist Norman Saunders and a pulp art historian himself), dealer Rick Hall, and collectors Andrew Porter, Leo Doroschenko and Atticus Gannaway. Who knows who might be there!

Back to the lineup. Here's what's planned:

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12

Courtney Rogers has kindly offered his house as the Friday night base for Doc Con. We'll venture out for dinner, return to the Rogers Radio Studios for a Doc Savage radio show re-enactment, then spend time visiting.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13

The big gathering gets underway at 9:30 a.m. at Jay Ryan's home. (Feel free to start arriving around 9 a.m.)
On the bill this year (order has not been set):

- A discussion about Arizona State University students¹ essays on Doc Savage/Prof. Challenger (from ³Lost World²), by Paul Cook
- A look and discussion about Scotty Phillips' pulp/paperback cover reproductions, by Rob Smalley
- Doc¹s vest vs. Batman¹s utility belt (as well as their other gadgets), by Steve Ringgenberg

- A presentation by Howard Wright, publisher of Bronze Gazette
- A look at ³Monk Mayfair as Doc Savage¹s Id,² by Fred Forino
- Something puzzling from the Doc Con quiz master, Glenn Horner
- Something having to do with the Doc Savage Method of Self Development, by Jay
- A look at the forgotten Doc Savage TV script, by Bill Lampkin
- A video retrospective of Doc Savage comic books, with contributions by Howard, Jay, Courtney Rogers and me
- A virtual meet-up with the Gotham Pulp Collectors Club

After dinner, we'll screen a video looking back at the pulp era, then spend the evening visiting, talking Doc Savage and all things pulp.

Big thanks go to Jay Ryan and Courtney Rogers for allowing us to invade their homes for Doc Con weekend. (And letting us take a look at collections!)

WHAT TO BRING
- $20 is the admittance fee (which includes lunch and a copy of "The Big Book of Bronze #3").
- One or more Doc Savage/pulp-related things to trade during the raffle time.
- Giveaways, if you have them.
- Doc or pulp-related items to sell (if you have them).

Remember, drop me an email at azdoccon@thepulp.net to let me know if you'll be there Friday night or Saturday; and if there's been a change to your presentation (or if you'd like to do one, it's not too late).  Doc Con XIII will be a terrific weekend. Hope you can attend!

THE FANTASY FAN - Now available!
THE FANTASY FAN is the complete run of 18 issues dating from September 1933 to February 1935 and contains original first published stories and poems by such amazing people as Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, H.P. Lovecraft, and many more.  Edited by the then 17 year old Charles Hornig, it was the first weird fiction zine ever.

Over the course of a year, the publisher was able to obtain 6 original copies, and xerox duplicates of 3 more, but only knowing half the story, he was obsessed with reading it all.  Fate stepped in and through another fan, he was loaned the remaining issues, and decided to make this into one complete book.  Each page was carefully scanned and cleaned up the areas that were difficult to read, but not altering the typos or layout, so you still felt like you were reading a 75 year old zine.

One thing we did do as a tribute to Mr, Hornig is finish the uncompleted "Supernatural Horror in Literature" essay by H.P. Lovecraft.

This is a limited pressing of 200 books.

Anyone interested should contact the publisher for pricing and ordering information.

The Movie Serial Companion: Book One - Recommended!
THE MOVIE SERIAL COMPANION Book One is the first of two books about the classic cliffhangers that thrilled the multitudes during the first half of the 20th century. The book starts off with afive-chapter history of America’s film serials that runs for 62 pages and covers both the silent and the sound film eras. The text is easily read, engaging, informative, and insightful. My interest never flagged and I learned many things that I was not previously aware of. For instance, I did not know that most serials had two directors, one shooting while the other prepared the next days work, or one doing location scenes while the other did interiors. Following the beginning chapters of the book is a 225 page annotated listing of the American serials of the silent era. The listing is done alphabetically by serial title. Most of the serials merit at least a full page which includes the date of the serial, the studio, the director(s), a listing of the players, a listing of the chapter titles, a synopsis of the story, and a brief commentary. Each listing is accompanied with numerous stills of scenes from the serial and of the players. Some of the entries also include the one-sheet advertising for the film or magazine covers featuring the serial or its players. Each serial entry averages at least 3-to-4 illustrations. Illustrations are in black and white and full color throughout. All-in-all, this book is obviously a labor of love and a welcome addition to my library. I look forward to the publication of the second book in the series.

PULP ADVENTURECON 2010
November 6, 2010!

PULP ADVENTURECON is taking place  at the Ramada Inn of Bordentown NJ on Saturday, November 6th, 2010.
The show runs from 10am-5pm, admission is $5.00.

Like the Mid-Jersey Comicon, the dealer room is filled with tables of treasures -- only for this show, the merchandise assumes a pulp-oriented slant.  The tables will have boxes and stacks of PULP MAGAZINES and pulp fiction reprints, along with vintage magazines, paperbacks, Big Little Books, movie  memorabilia and much more!

If your interests lean toward The Shadow, Doc  Savage, The Lone Ranger, Tarzan, Zorro, Dashiell Hammett, H.P. Lovecraft's  C'Thulu, or Edgar Rice
Burrough's Tarzan or Robert E. Howard's Conan,  you'll find something to whet your appetite at this show. As I modestly tell  everyone who will listen (and a few who refuse to listen), you won't find more  pulp magazines at any show on the east coast. Come out and see the original  stories of adventure, mystery, science fiction, horror, romance and westerns  that inspired the comics books from way back when to the present day.

If you're thinking of traveling from the Manhattan area and don't have a  car, you can always take NJ Transit to Trenton, then it's a short hop on the  Riverline light rail to Bordentown City.  Call the Ramada at (609) 298-3200  or call Rich's cell phone at (609) 346-4184.  There are people who will gladly volunteer to give rides back and forth to and from the light rail station.

Hope to see you there!
RICH HARVEY

Rancho Diablo #1: SHOOTER'S CROSS
Kindle Edition is now available / print edition to follow!
Bill Crider, James Reasoner, and Mel Odom have joined forces
to create a new Western pulp series published exclusively at Amazon.

The Kindle version is live now and the printed version will be ready in a couple of weeks.

All of the authors have written Western fiction and wanted to try a hand at creating their own brand, offering great action-packed stories surrounding the birth of a new ranching empire along the Brazos River in East Texas.  A PDF preview of the book is available here.

CURSED LAND
Army Scout Sam Blaylock rode into the small Texas town of Shooter's Cross looking for deserters, not trouble. While up in the mountains, he discovered a wilderness plagued by nature and haunted by superstition, but one that he thought he could tame with his experience and strong back. He didn't know he was going to have to kill to keep the home he planned for his family, but he didn't let that stop him.  Sam had been looking for a home for his family for years.  That search had been interrupted by the Civil War.  Now Sam is putting down roots, and not even the Devil himself can stand in the way.

The Kindle Edition is now available at Amazon.com for $2.99

Hard Case Crime - New titles to appear from Titan Publishing in late 2011!
From Charles Ardai, Editor:
As you know, our relationship with Dorchester Publishing (Hard Case Crime's publisher since the line's launch in 2004) came to an end a few months ago when Dorchester announced it was getting out of the business of publishing mass market paperback books. This left Hard Case Crime without a home. I've spent the past six weeks in meetings with other publishers interested in giving us a new home, and I was gratified to receive offers from five of the firms we met with.  They were all firms I respect greatly and would have enjoyed working with; but in the end, one stood out as clearly the best match, and that was Titan Publishing.

Based in London, Titan is a publisher both of fiction and of gorgeous art books focusing on pop culture such as movie poster art, pin-ups, newspaper comic strips, and Golden Age comic books; they have worked with filmmakers such as J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon, and George Lucas; they've been around for 30 years and have more than 200 employees; and in addition to publishing books, they also have a magazine division, own retail stores, and produce merchandise such as t-shirts, sculptures, and accessories.  It's fun to imagine what sorts of cool Hard Case Crime products we might create with them!

But first things first: books.
Titan plans to acquire all existing stock of our old books from Dorchester and to resume shipping those books to stores immediately.  New books will start coming next fall, with two titles planned for each of September and October 2011.  (Why so long a wait? It has to do with the sales cycle in the book publishing business. Titan's sales force is already selling July/August 2011 titles to stores now; September/October 2011 is the soonest we can get new books out if we want to have enough time for booksellers to consider and order them, and then for Titan to print and ship them, etc.)

Our 2011 titles will include two you've hear about before -- QUARRY'S EX by Max Allan Collins and CHOKE HOLD by Christa Faust, both of which were in the works at Dorchester but never got published -- and two you haven't heard about, by major writers in the field.  (Can't say who yet...but they've both been named "Grand Masters" by the Mystery Writers of America, the organization's highest honor.)  You'll be hearing more about all four books over the coming months, I promise.  In the meantime, if you'd like a little taste of QUARRY'S EX and CHOKE HOLD, you can see their cover art and read a sample chapter from each at our Web site, www.HardCaseCrime.com.

We will also still be going ahead with our special hardcover 'double' volume with Subterranean Press, featuring two long-lost Lawrence Block novels bound back-to-back.  More info on that one as soon as we have a firm publication date and cover art to to show you!

In other news, HAVEN, the SyFy television series inspired by one of our books (THE COLORADO KID by Stephen King), just completed its first season and has been renewed for a second.  If you haven't seen the show or only caught the first few episodes, I'd encourage you to give it a(nother) try -- it got really good by the end of the season (and no, I'm not just saying that because I wrote the penultimate episode and came up with the story for one before that...).  It's a little different from what you see in our books, since every story contains elements of the supernatural -- but it's still a show about a FBI agent, a cop, and a criminal, and features some awfully hard cases...

Also: Universal Pictures acquired the rights to two other Hard Case Crime books -- LITTLE GIRL LOST and SONGS OF INNOCENCE by my close personal friend Richard Aleas -- and has attached a director (Jonathan Levine, "The Wackness") and screenwriter (Michael Bacall, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World") to the project.  No guarantee that a movie will actually get made, of course -- but it's a very exciting first step.

What else is new?  Well, Hard Case Crime's sister line, THE ADVENTURES OF GABRIEL HUNT, is staying with Dorchester for the time being, and they have plans to reissue all of those books -- including the sixth, which never came out in mass market paperback -- in the larger "trade paperback" format (as well as e-book format).  If everything goes as planned, those should start coming next year.  If you poke around online, you can also find an audiobook edition of one book in the series, HUNT THROUGH THE CRADLE OF FEAR, produced by AudioRealms.  If there's ever been a genre suited to audiobook adaptation, it's tales of adventure!

That's all the news this time around.  There will be more, probably fairly soon -- you'll certainly be hearing from me well before this time next year, when the new books come out.  But in the meantime, I want to thank you for all your patience and your support.  It's great to know you're out there, as passionate about our books as ever.  I promise: We'll give you some good scratching for your itch just as soon as we can.

HUNT THE SPACE-WITCH!
By Robert Silverberg with a new introduction by the author!

Science-fiction legend Robert Silverberg reflects on some of his earliest, least-reprinted tales in this new Planet Stories collection! This volume, the first of three to come this year, features seven hard-to-find classic Silverberg novellas:

Slaves of the Star Giants
Spawn of the Deadly Sea

Conan and Olivia have escaped the terrible wrath of the armies of Turan by fleeing to a small island in the vast Vilayet Sea, but it seems that Conan cannot avoid all the enemies that he made as leader of the Kozaki raiders. The small island that he and Olivia have used to put some distance between them and the Turanian military has turned out to be an appealing hiding place for another group of outlaws -- the Red Brotherhood! Traveling only with the beautiful Olivia, and without an army of mercenaries at his back, Conan is no longer protected from their rage. However, they may not be the most dangerous adversaries Conan will have to face if he and Olivia are to get off the island in one piece! Large predators stalk the forest, and there is something much, much worse lurking within the ruins of an ancient civilization. Tim Truman, Tomas Giorello, and Jose Villarrubia continue their adaptation of Robert E. Howard's "Iron Shadows in the Moon."

Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 21-24, 2010!
The 35th Annual Friends of Old Time Radio Convention (www.fotr.net) will take place October 21-24 2010 at the Ramada Plaza hotel in Newark, NJ.
The four day event features live recreations of classic old time radio programs with all-star casts as well as memorabilia, music, panel discussions, autographs and historical presentations.  The convention is a great way to meet and show appreciation for the veterans who made old time radio great as well as get to know some of the younger actors who are working to keep the tradition alive.

The invited guest list looks great so far.  I know everyone will enjoy seeing the great Simon Jones ("Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") again. Shirley Mitchell (Lelia Ransom on Gildersleeve), New York area television host Chuck McCann, WXYZ veteran Elaine Hyman ("The Lone Ranger"), ABC announcer Bill Owen and Gloria McMillan (Harriet Conklin on Our Miss Brooks) are also back for more.  Local New York talk show legend Joe "Nostalgia King" Franklin will recreate his show live on stage, bringing his own surprises guests along.  Another great returning guest is Ivan Curry, star of "Bobby Benson and the B-Bar B Riders" on old time radio.  The guest list changes frequently, so keep checking the website for updates.

Thursday - Sunday programs include an afternoon program that consists of a recreation, panel discussions and dealer rooms.  The evening program features a buffet dinner in which there is at least one special guest at each table and all-star recreations.  It's a great way to socialize with the stars as well as see them perform.  On Sunday, there is a buffet breakfast and panel with remaining guests.

Shows scheduled for recreation this year include The Great Gildersleeve, The Adventures of Sam Spade, The First Nighter, Fibber McGee & Molly, Columbia Workshop, Screen Guild Theater and The Adventures of Superman.

Full information on the convention including room rates (historically low right now at $75/AAA) and registration information for the convention itself is available at www.fotr.net.

Pulp Adventurecon 2010
November 6, 2010!

On Saturday, November 6th, fans of  distressed damsels, classic crime fighters, and ornery owl hoots will gather at  the annual Pulp AdventureCon, to be held at the Ramada Inn in  Bordentown,  NJ.  There will be vendors with rare pulp magazines, movie posters, and  vintage paperbacks.  There are also several new publications that are reviving both the heroes and tradition of pulp fiction.

Pulp magazines were an  inexpensive form of entertainment in the days before the internet, cell phones,  and even television.  Though the  first pulp magazine – a publication roughly the size of today’s modern comic  book, printed on cheap, throw-away paper – is considered to be the Argosy in  1897, the pulps had their hey-day during the 1920’s through the 1940s.  The Depression helped their popularity  soar, with inexpensive stories of spacemen, pirates and cowboys and  superheroes.  The close of World War  II, however, gradually brought about their demise – apparently, no fictional  villain could compare with the true-life horror of Adolph Hitler.

“Pulp magazines and their  brethren live on it today’s movie and comic books,” says Rich Harvey, co-sponsor  of the show.  “The pulp heroes  didn’t have the angst and self-doubt of today’s modern super-heroes,  though.  They were determined good  guys out to smash evil-doers, and maybe rescue a damsel or two.  Along the way, something usually gets  blown up.” Characters like Tarzan,  Zorro, and Sam Spade made their original appearances in the pulps.  Authors like Dashiell Hammett, Edgar  Rice Burroughs, and Ray Bradbury formed the cornerstones of their career in  these lurid publications.  And  characters like Doc Savage and The Shadow are preparing to make their return  through comic books and motion pictures.
“Sometimes,” says Rich  Harvey, “people come just to look at the colorful covers on the magazines.  The illustrators of the pulps were real  craftsmen, like the authors, and were classically trained painters.  Many of them supported themselves by  painting pulp covers, depicting scenes of high adventure, and were secretly  ashamed of their work.  But today,  fans and collectors celebrate the diversity of genres and pay tribute to their  talent.”

The Pulp AdventureCon will  be held on November 6th,  2010 at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206,  Bordentown,  NJ.
The show runs from 10AM to 5PM. Admission  is $5.00.

SHAMELESS ART: 20th Century Genre and the Artists that Defined It

Unrepentant, unapologetic, unbridled and under-appreciated, genre art from the first half of the 20th century reflected subconscious urges of a economically deprived and sexually depressed generation. This popular art set the stage for the advertised expression of today's more liberated consumer culture. Shameless Art explores the influential work of imaginative illustrators who helped create the visual language for everything from today's comic books, magazine and television advertising, as well as imaginative movies like Avatar and sensual films like Y Tu Mama Tambien. Featuring stunning art by such genre masters as Tom Lovell, Virgil Finlay, Hannes Bok, Margaret Brundage, and Enoch Bolles, this beautifully produced full color collection mirrors mid-20th century masculine fantasies.

Doc Savage - New Will Murray interview online at The Scoop!
Will Murray was interviewed by Scoop and it is now posted online.
The interview covers the 1985 Doc Savage NPR Show on CD as well as the upcoming new Doc Savage novels.

Read the full interview at the Scoop website.

Highlights from the interview:
Will Murray: I'm in talks to launch a new series of Doc novels based upon Lester Dent’s unfinished plots and story openings. I’ve completed The Desert Demons, set in 1936 California. From his Fortress of Solitude, Doc sends an emergency radio message, ordering all of his assistants to assemble in Los Angeles to deal with a threat greater than anything they have ever known. Lester started this great story, and I’m pleased to finish it for him 75 years later! I’m already working on the next two, The Infernal Buddha and Horror in Gold. Seven are planned. But the sky may be the limit.

Will Murray: My novelette, “The Night Car,” leads off Moonstone’s first Green Hornet Chronicles, out now. I have a wild Avenger story in The Avenger Chronicles, Vol. 2, “The Changeling.” Others stories starring The Spider, The Secret 6 and Honey West will appear in various Moonstone collections. Of them all, I’m proudest of “The Adventure of the Imaginary Nihilist,” which teams the Great Detective with Colonel Richard Henry Savage, the inspiration for Doc Savage. I expect to co-edit Doc novels until Sanctum Books runs out of stories to reprint. And if the Radio Archives CD sells well, we might do new audio Doc serials! I’ve already picked Resurrection Day to adapt…

Black Coat Press - The October releases are now available!

ENEMY FORCE by John-Antoine Nau
John-Antoine Nau's 1903 ENEMY FORCE has the distinction of having been the very first novel to receive the prestigious Goncourt Literary Award in France. The author was a rather eccentric surrealist/poet and the novel is indeed quite surreal: its protagonist is a poet who's been committed to a lunatics asylum by his family, following a nervous breakdown.  He appears quite sane, except that he suddenly is visited, even possessed, by an entity from outer space, an intelligence from a rather fantastic and hellish planet orbiting Aldebaran. Is the entiry real, or is it a manifestation of the narrator's insanity? The novel ends with one final twist on whether what we have been told is real or not. A rather odd, and yet interesting book, translated by Michael Shreve with a cover by Nick Tripiciano.5x8 trade paperback, 244 pages, $20.95

THE EYE OF PURGATORY by Jacques Spitz
In the history of French SF, Jacques Spitz is the bridge between Renard and Rosny on the one and, and René Barjavel and other writers of the 1950s, probably the last great French SF writer to not have been influenced by American SF. Brian Stableford has translated two of Sp[itz's novels, DR MOPS' EXPERIMENT (1939) and THE EYE OF PURGATORY (1945). Both are very Wellsian in concepts and deal with the ability to see through time; in the first novel, a character can peer into the future at an accelerated rate (leading to the usual quandaries about whether one can change what's to come); in the second novel, the protagonist sees not the real future but an increasingly aging present, leading to unique visions of decay, death and beyond. One is somewhat reminded of Thomas Disch or JG Ballard. The cover is by Spanish master Juan Miguel Aguilera.  5x8 trade paperback, 244 pages, $20.95

THE GREEN GODS by Nathalie Henneberg
Nathalie Henneberg's colorful, flamboyant THE GREEN GODS (1961), which takes place in a future, post-cataclysmic Earth where men must fight both intelligent plants and giant insects to survive, was translated in the late 1970s by award-winning CJ Cherryh for DAW books. This book reprints a slightly reedited version of Cherryh's translation as well as several other hard to find Henneberg stories previously translated by Damon Knight, and a comprehensive Henneberg biography.  Henneberg was compared by DAW to Abrahan Merritt, but I think a comparison with Tanith Lee might be more appropriate. The cover is by French artist Anne Claire Payet.  5x8 trade paperback, 268 pages, $20.95

THE NIGHT ORCHID by Jean-Claude Dunyach
Finally, we are pleased to announce our second kindle/epub release: after last month's release of Jean-Claude Dunyach award-winning collection of SF stories THE THIEVES OF SILENCE, we are releasing Jean-Claude's earlier collection, THE NIGHT ORCHID (subtitled "Conan Doyle in Toulouse") in that format. Jean-Claude is not unlike a French David Brin (who kindly wrote the intro to NIGHT ORCHID) and one of France's best contemporary SF writers.

The Chronicles of Kull Volume 4: The Blood of Kings Other Stories reprints Kull the Conqueror Volume 2 #1 and #2, and Kull the Conqueror Volume 3 #1 and #2 with their original colors digitally remastered and restored!

Collecting Pulps - Now online!
Steve Lewis' website Mystery File blog is running a series on "Collecting Pulps" and Part One is online concerning BLACK MASK. This coincides with what must be the biggest and possibly greatest reprint of pulp fiction ever, THE BLACK LIZARD BIG BOOK OF BLACK MASK STORIES edited by Otto Penzler. At over 1100 pages and 53 stories this collection is a worthy companion to THE BLACK LIZARD BIG BOOK OF PULPS from a couple years ago.

Thanks to Walker Martin for the tip!

Doc Con XIII - November 13, 2010!

The Doc Con XIII schedule is coming together nicely. On the bill this year will be:
  • A Discussion about Arizona State University students' essays on Doc Savage/Prof. Challenger (from "Lost World"), by Paul Cook
  • Doc's vest vs. Batman's utility belt (as well as their other gadgets), by Steve Ringgenberg
  • A look at "Monk Mayfair as Doc Savage's Id," by Fred Forino
  • Something puzzling from the Doc Con quiz master, Glenn Horner
  • Something having to do with the Doc Savage Method of Self Development, by Jay Ryan
  • The forgotten Doc Savage TV script, by William Lampkin
  • A video retrospective of Doc Savage comic books, with contributions by Howard Wright, Jay Ryan, Courtney Rogers and William Lampkin
  • Doc Con After Dark will feature the screening of a video on the pulp era.
Of course, if anyone else would like to contribute a segment (or if I have left you out), please let William Lampkin know. We'd love to have you do something. (William Lampkin is this year's con coordinator. Jay Ryan will be hosting the con at his home.)

The "official" con day is Saturday, Nov. 13, but Friday night, Nov. 12, kicks of the gathering with a radio play re-enactment. Then Sunday morning, Nov. 14, will be a breakfast for those wishing to get together one last time.

Cost for the con will be $20 again this year, which includes a copy of "The Big Book of Bronze, Volume 3."
Hope to see you there!

Please contact Sean Dougherty, publicity coordinator, at 201-739-2541 or SeanDD@optonline.net or @doughertysean on Twitter, or The Friends of Old
Time Radio Convention on Facebook for more information.

Edited by John Locke

In an era of odd magazines, Macfadden's GHOST STORIES (1926-31) was a standout of the strange. It tapped into occult interest by presenting haunted tales that may or may not have been true. If they were true, then GHOST STORIES was testament to the presence of spirits in every exciting arena, the Western Front, gangland, aviation, the Klondike, the circus, the theater; not coincidentally, all the varied settings that pulp stories employed.

The personnel that created GHOST STORIES, though not well remembered today in most cases, were an uncommonly talented and fascinating group. They include poets and scholars, war heroes and war correspondents, adventurers and Bohemians. A few were titans of magazine publishing and editing. A few developed into prolific pulpsters; a few became bestselling authors; a few went Hollywood; one earned a Pulitzer Prize for fiction. And because it's GHOST STORIES, a few led haunted lives: within these pages appear two murderers, a murder victim, a suicide, and several casualties of tragic accidents.

Volume 1 presents 19 spooky tales from GHOST STORIES, complete with original illustrations. Extensive nonfiction material includes the history of GHOST STORIES, and detailed biographies of every GHOST STORIES editor, and every author whose stories appear in Volume 1.

Volume 2 presents 15 eerie tales from GHOST STORIES, complete with original illustrations. Extensive nonfiction material includes detailed biographies of every author whose stories appear in Volume 2, and every GHOST STORIES cover artist. Also included is a gallery of all 64 GHOST STORIES covers.

All stories complete with original illustrations.

Planetary Stories reaches Twentieth Issue!
Jerry Page, Bob Kennedy and Shelby Vick tossed around the idea of having their October issue be a Special Holiday Issue -- then decided, "Nah -- we'll just see what comes along."  What came along was a great group of holiday stories!

In reverse order, we start with Eugie Foster's classic story about the origin of Chinese New Year -- well-illustrated by Roy Coker.  Then Rob Shelsky flabbergasted us with somc Christmas humor that should become a classic on its own.  Jim Griffin took an unusual step and wrote a short Christmas story about his Texas Ranger, Jim Blawcyzk.  To this point, the Ranger has only been in novels.

The Mountie is involved in a Christmas story, Erwin Roberts presents us with a Grant Rockwell story set in a past Thanksgiving, while the FutureTeam saves Thanksgiving turkeys for the universe, four burlesque girls who happen to be ghosts star in a Halloween trilogy, while the Diamondville Dolls are involved in their own trick'r'treating.

Some people might view "Cavern Wight" by Lane Harrison as revisiting a major controversy from the 1940s but the truth is, it's just a lot of fun to read. It's the first of a series and we hope you enjoy it.

We also have space opera!  Ron  Butler brings us another Rory Rammer story, Kirk Straughen gives us excitement, Richard Logan has his hero save a princess, Bob Brolin's strange friend has an adventure -- there's even a Capt Puffin adventure.

Pulp 2.0 Press - New Line of Pulp Graphic Novels for Digital and Print!
MIRACLE SQUAD and TWILIGHT AVENGER for 2011 Release

Pulp 2.0 Press CEO Bill Cunningham today announced that the company is launching a line of what he calls “pulp graphic novels” for digital and print distribution.  The company begins this new line of pulp entertainment media by licensing the publishing  and media rights to the 1980’s indie comic book serials THE MIRACLE SQUAD and THE TWILIGHT AVENGER created by writer John Wooley and artist Terry Tidwell.

THE MIRACLE SQUAD was originally published as two 4-issue miniseries by  Upshot Graphics  and later, Apple Comics.  The first serial chronicles the adventures of a team of 1936 movie studio professionals who take on the mob bent on ‘acquiring’ their poverty row studio as a means of money laundering.  The team uses their unique skills in props, stunts, makeup, escapology and acting to uncover the leader behind the ‘hostile takeover’ and give him his two-fisted comeuppance. Cunningham is quick to say that, "The Miracle Squad is akin to today's A-TEAM only set in 1930's poverty row Hollywood. It's fun, outrageous and jam-packed with all sorts of pulpy goodness."

The second Miracle Squad serial  BLOOD AND DUST features the adventures of the team when they tackle a group of land thieves capitalizing on the infamous ‘Dust Bowl’ crisis of the 1930’s.  Set against the backdrop of the Oklahoma range, the movie studio adventurers go head-to-head against poverty, exploitation and cross-burning klansmen.

THE TWILIGHT AVENGER is the story of a college student Reece Chambers who uses an arsenal of super-scientific gadgets to seek revenge against the criminals who ran down his fiancee and left her in a coma.  Unknown to Chambers is the fact the criminals are led by a masked villain known only as The Centipede. Originally launched by Elite Comics, the series was later published by Eternity Comics and featured zombies, mad scientists and even time travel.

“Both titles reflect the action-packed pulps, cliffhanger serials and B-movies of the 1930’s -- the era which also inspired retro movies like THE ROCKETEER and THE INDIANA JONES series,”  said Pulp 2.0 Press MPB (Mad Pulp Bastard),  Bill Cunningham.  “John Wooley and Terry Tidwell captured that dynamic era within the pages of their comic achieving the perfect blend of the heroic daring of the serials with the real-life drama of the 1930’s Depression.  I remember reading both comics in the 1980’s when they were first published, and after I began building Pulp 2.0, I sought John and Terry out to see if their work was available. Their retro-styled comics are a perfect fit for our readers.”

After several emails and phone conversations, Cunningham licensed the rights to bring back the duo’s comic creations for both print and digital readers.  While the books design style is still in the beginning stages of development, the company is approaching both Miracle Squad and Twilight Avenger as ‘pulp properties that look appropriate to their source material.’  As Cunningham says, “Pulp isn’t a particular medium, it’s an attitude.”  Since both titles were obviously influenced by poverty row adventure cinema of the 1930’s it makes sense to keep and try to amplify that aesthetic.  Miracle Squad and Twilight Avenger  are both terrific stories and our audience deserves to read them in uniquely designed collected editions in whatever format they choose. This is the approach we have taken with our first book, BROTHER BLOOD by Donald F. Glut as well as our soon-to-be-released RADIO WESTERN ADVENTURES which features a 'lost' short stories by Glut and legendary DOC SAVAGE creator Lester Dent.”

To that end, Pulp 2.0 is digitally ‘cleaning up’ the original pages for both  Miracle Squad and Twilight Avenger and compiling many bonus “behind-the-scenes” features for the print editions. The bonus features will include design sketches, notes, script pages and essays. “We take our time in the design phase and try and come up with a few special surprises for our readers,” said Cunningham.  “Our goal is to create collectible editions that are easily available online.”

John Wooley, the writer / co-creator of Miracle Squad and Twilight Avenger had this to say: "No one loves pulps and the whole idea of classic pulp fiction more than I do, and our first  phone conversation made it clear to me that Bill Cunningham was a kindred soul who not only shared that love, but also knew exactly how to get the Twilight Avenger and the Miracle Squad to a wider audience than they were ever able to reach during their initial runs.  F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote that there were no second acts in American lives. Terry and I are so pleased that,  thanks to Pulp 2.0 Press,  our '30s heroes and heroines are going to be an exception."

Both ‘pulp graphic novels’ are scheduled to begin release in 1st quarter 2011.  More details will be made available as they develop. Please visit the Pulp 2.0 website at www.pulp2ohpress.com.

For more information or to arrange an interview please contact Bill Cunningham at the information at the top of the page.
