Sky Devil: Hell's Skipper by Harold F. Cruickshank
This is a 334 page 6x9 trade paperback.
All Age of Aces books can be purchased through
Amazon, Adventure House, or Mike Chomko Books.

All along the Western front, everyone was out to get The Sky Devil’s Brood! There was no better flight in France. Led by Captain Bill Dawe, the famous Yank ace known to all of France as the Sky Devil, the brood consisted of Chuck Verne, Mart Bevin, Slim Skitch and Slug Walton. The crimson devil insignia on their silver Spads brought fear to any German pilot unlucky enough to meet them in the air.

But the Sky Devil’s greatest enemy might just be his own C.O., Major Petrie, who had been railroaded into command of 120 Squadron over Dawe’s head. Jealous of Dawe’s popularity, Petrie will do anything to bring down “The Sky Devil’s Brood!”

Prolific pulpster Harold F. Cruickshank penned Twenty-nine exciting adventures of the Sky Devil. They appeared in the pages of DARE-DEVIL ACES from 1932-1935. Age of Aces collects fourteen of them here in Volume 1.

Also included in this volume, Don Hutchison provides some insight into Cruickshank’s career.

"It was the face of a man long since dead! The thin lips were drawn away from skull-like teeth. The cheeks were sunken and leathery. Dank black hair lay matted thinly on a baldish scalp the color of old parchment. A living corpse in the costume of a gay Harlequin! With a wide-muzzled gun. And a jeering laugh that made the silence in the room crawl with menace." from Death's Harlequin.

H. Beam Piper - A Biography
John F. Carr Series Editors Donald E. Palumbo and C.W. Sullivan III

H. Beam Piper is one of science fiction’s most enigmatic writers. In 1946 Piper appeared seemingly from out of nowhere, already at the top of his form. He published a number of memorable short stories in the premier science fiction magazine of the time, Astounding Science Fiction, under legendary editor John W. Campbell. Piper quickly became friends with many of the top writers of the day, including Lester Del Rey, Fletcher Pratt, Robert Heinlein and L. Sprague de Camp. Piper also successfully made the turn from promising short story writer to major novelist, authoring Four-Day Planet, Cosmic Computer, Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen and Little Fuzzy, which was nominated for a Hugo award.

Even those who counted Piper among their friends knew very little about the man or his life as a railroad yard bull in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This biography illuminates H. Beam Piper, both the writer and the man, and answers lingering questions about his death. Appendices include a number of Piper’s personal papers, a complete bibliography of Piper’s works, and an essay on Piper’s Terro-Human Future History series.

Mundania Press - Now available!
Ed Lynskey’s third P.I. Frank Johnson mystery, PELHAM FELL HERE, is due out from Mundania Press. Set in West Virginia/Virginia, it has received a blurb from James Crumley ("a delight" and "rings true") as well as positive reviews in the LANSING STATE JOURNAL and MIDWEST.

Synopsis:
MP and part-time gunsmith Frank Johnson finds his cousin Cody Chapman killed by a twelve-gauge shotgun. Enraged, Frank wants some answers, and fast. Was Cody involved in an arms smuggling scheme?

The mystery grows when a pair of murderous deputy sheriffs ambush Frank. Killing them in self-defense, Frank must take it on the lam while he continues his investigation.

Eventually he discovers a group of Neo-Nazis, holed up at a remote castle, who may be behind his cousin's murder. Luckily, a couple of bounty hunter pals throw in with Frank to even up the odds.

Dustjacket blurbs:
"Ed Lynskey's new novel PELHAM FELL HERE is a delight. With a plot as complex as your grandmother's crocheted doilies, Mr. Lynskey creates a portrait of the rural hill country that rings as true as the clank of a Copenhagen can on a Pabst Blue Ribbon can, as does his handle on guns, love, and betrayal. This is a novel well worth the read and makes me want more." —James Crumley, Hammett Award winning author of THE LAST GOOD KISS

"Ed Lynskey's PELHAM FELL HERE is as hard-bitten and hard-boiled as they come. The dialogue crackles with such sharpness that you'd swear sparks were jumping off the pages. And P.I. Frank Johnson is a character cut from the Tarantino mold: tough, wounded, conflicted, and bad-ass. Pick up a copy today!" —James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author of THE JUDAS STRAIN

"PELHAM FELL HERE is a gritty, fascinating thriller with colorful characters, snappy dialogue and plenty of plot twists. Ed Lynskey has created an interesting hero with Frank Johnson, a man with a mission who becomes a man on the run after killing some crooked cops. PELHAM FELL HERE kept me guessing--and on the edge of my seat." —Kevin O'Brien, New York Times bestselling author of ONE LAST SCREAM

"Nobody captures rural America like Ed Lynskey . . . a thoroughly engrossing and satisfying read." —Anne Frasier, USA Today bestselling author of PALE IMMORTAL

"Ed Lynskey writes in a voice utterly unique to the crime genre. His language cracks like a whip. His dialogue pops like fireworks on the Fourth. In PELHAM FELL HERE, he's crafted a story Indiana Jones would kill for, full of humor, action, neo-Nazi thugs, and the marvelous countryside of rural Virginia. If you haven't read this guy, drop everything right now and do it. You'll be very happy you did." —William Kent Krueger, Anthony Award winning author of THUNDER BAY

"Ed Lynskey's followup to THE BLUE CHEER is another lean, tough slice of rural noir. Lynskey reminds us that for every mean street in the city, there's an equally mean dirt road out where the buses don't run. The writing is pure joy to read; he can evoke more powerful imagery with a single perfectly chosen phrase than most writers can with a half page of descriptive prose. Strong stuff, but always satisfying." —J.D. Rhoades, author of SAFE AND SOUND

"PELHAM FELL HERE bears the richest nicotine and bourbon stains of the hardboiled genre, yet also bristles with vitality. The plot sings, the characters are twisty and textured and the violence brutal but inevitable. All of these elements would be more than enough yet Ed Lynskey offers so much more in the form of a perfectly pitched prose style that swings effortlessly from back-country grit to Appalachian poetry and back again." —Megan Abbott, Edgar nominee author of QUEENPIN

"Ed Lynskey's PELHAM FELL HERE is top drawer PI fiction. Lynskey has a stark, original voice and he is not to be missed." —Jason Starr, Barry and Anthony winning author of THE FOLLOWER

Airship 27 Productions and Cornerstone Book Publishers are thrilled to announce the release of CAPTAIN HAZZARD – CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK; the fourth in this new series by pulpsmith, Ron Fortier.  The adventures of the Champion of Justice were re-launched in 2006 when Fortier undertook to bring this long lost hero back to pulpdom’s center stage.  He did this by completely re-writing the one and only Captain Hazzard adventure, PYTHON MEN OF THE LOST CITY, dated May 1938.  Adding new chapters and filling in numerous plot holes, Fortier edited this new version and former DC artist, Rob Davis provided the artwork.

Hot on the heels of that book’s debut and success, Fortier then co-wrote, with acclaimed comics writer Martin Powell, CITADEL OF FEAR; the first all new  Captain Hazzard thriller in over 68 years.  That book’s critical success soon prompted his re-write of the third chapter in the saga, CURSE OF THE RED MAGGOT, released in 2007 sporting a painted cover by Mark Maddox.  Now comes another all new, thrilled packed adventure, CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK.

When two evil madmen of science devise a fantastic scheme to bring New York City to its knees under a mountain of freezing snow, it’s up to Captain Hazzard and his Fighting Five to stop them.  But can even their courage and daring prepare them to combat an army of savage cavemen?  This time Captain Hazzard will ally himself with an intrepid pulp writer named Lester Dent, while his cousin, Doctor Martin Tracey, will employ all his medical skills to save the life of a very brave young boy.  CAVEMAN OF NEW YORK is filled with all the pulse-pound pulp action and adventure pulp fans have come to expect from the one and only Captain Hazzard!

CAPTAIN HAZZARD – CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK, available now from Airship 27 Prod. and Cornerstone Book Publishers.  Written by Ron Fortier, with interior art and design by Rob Davis and cover by Mark Maddox.

Airship 27 Productions and Cornerstone Book Publishers take to the skies with the release of their reprint edition of LANCE STAR – SKY RANGER.   This collection of new stories starring the long forgotten pulp hero was the first anthology title produced by Airship 27 Prod. dated 2006.  Its overwhelming success helped launch the company’s ambitious plans to bring back classic pulp characters in brand new adventures.  “Without LANCE STAR – SKY RANGER, there probably would have been no Airship 27 Prod.” claimed Editor Ron Fortier.  “It was the book that got us going.”

A product of the Canadian pulps, the original LANCE STAR – SKY RANGER graced the newsstands from 1939 to 1944, a Dutton Press publication.  This anthology features four action packed tales of Lance and his loyal Sky Rangers. They include, Attack of the Birdman by Frank Dirscherl, Where the Sea Meets the Sky by Bobby Nash, Shadows Over Kunlun by Win Scott Eckert and Talons of the Red Condor by Bill Spangler with cover and interior art by comic pro, Rich Woodall of Johnny Raygun fame.

The book also contains an article on the history of the character by Norman Hamilton and a second on airplane modeling in the 1930s and 40s by Larry Marshall.  Included as an added bonus feature for this new edition is an excerpt from Bobby Nash’s full length novel, Lance Star – Sky Ranger: 1941 – The Road to War, coming soon!

At the height of the pulps’ popularity, flying heroes like Dusty Ayers, G8 & His Battle Aces and Bill Barnes were among the biggest sellers on the market.  Airship 27 Prod. is once again turning the spotlight on another such aviation daredevil,

THE GOOD DIE YOUNG—And Other Early Stories of Romance
By Cornell Woolrich
Edited and with an introduction by Gene Christie
35 uncollected works by this master of suspense!

Remembered today as a master of mystery and edge-of-the-seat thrills, Cornell Woolrich began his career by imitating F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “Jazz Age” tales, selling light-heart stories to publications such as College Humor, Illustrated Love and The Smart Set. In these early romances, Woolrich developed his literary style and the motifs that he would later use so effectively to create truly unforgettable fiction.

These stories have been “lost” and unavailable to the reading public for more than three generations. Now Black Dog Books presents The Good Die Young, a collection 35 early efforts by Woolrich that have never been reprinted or collected.

Visit our new BLOG, Black Dog Books News From the Dog Pound, for news of upcoming titles and developments regarding projects from Black Dog Books, announcements, as well as occasional random thoughts and other information to share.

THE COLLECTED EDMOND HAMILTON  - AUTHORIZED EDITION

Edmond Moore Hamilton (1904-1977) was one of the early pioneers of American science fiction. For fifty years his stories established and popularized many of the tropes in modern science fiction. Later this year, Haffner Press will launch the first salvo in a program authorized by the Estate of Edmond Hamilton to collect all the prose work of this neglected master. All of his science fiction, all the fantasy, all the mysteries--all the stories and novels (including the entire run of the "Captain Future" adventures) will be assembled in this multi-volume set.

• The Metal Giants and Others: The Collected Edmond Hamilton, Volume One
• The Star Stealers: The Complete Tales of the Interstellar Patrol, The Collected Edmond Hamilton, Volume Two
• The Collected Captain Future, Volume One: Captain Future and the Space Emperor

As with all Haffner Press titles, quality is of prime importance.  Each volume of THE COLLECTED EDMOND HAMILTON will be printed on acid-free archival-quality paper with smythe-sewn hardcover bindings using full-cloth covered boards. Full-color dust jackets will reproduce digitally restored covers from the original pulp magazines.

We are currently lining up a stellar group of writers, editors, historians, and friends of Hamilton to provide insightful introductions for each volume.
Keep Watching the Skies and check the Haffner Press website frequently for updates on this project. We have a lot of neat tie-ins to this particular program, and you won't want to miss at thing.

After last issue's bloody surprises and frightening, new terrors, Claire and Janet follow a mysterious lawman away from the gore-filled plantation house to seek advice from a strange, obsessive-compulsive hermit. While they can't leave their friends (or what's left of them) behind for long, this may be their only chance at escape. Or maybe they'll just find a quick death, if they're lucky. Haunted by dangerous shape-shifting shadows, reanimated bodies of the dead, and the dark heart of the mansion itself, the panic-stricken twins would rather take a chance finding answers in the demented shack of a madman than spend another minute in the hell that still holds their friends captive!

Written by celebrated horror author Joe R. Lansdale (writer of Bubbu Ho-Tep, Batman, Jonah Hex, Conan)
Based on the classic horror story by Conan creator Robert E. Howard!

Age of Aces
Coming later this month!

Sky Devil: Hell's Skipper by Harold F. Cruickshank

Everyone likes a fat guy, unless they have to fly with him. “Tubby” Gorkin could barely fit into the rear observer’s cockpit and no pilot wanted him as their observer.  Now, with a new hard edged C.O. coming on, it looked like the end of Tubby’s dream of becoming a pilot.

Airship 27 - WEIRD HORROR STORIES coming in 2009!
Michael Vance has signed with Cornerstone Books and Airship 27 for publication of “Weird Horror Stories”, an anthology of psychological horror, SF and fantasy short stories. Published in the style and tradition of pulp magazines from the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, the book is scheduled for release in early 2009.

"Michael Vance offers up 12 tales of horror in the Lovecraft tradition with a deft sense of suspense and heart-pumping terror,” said Ron Fortier, editor and producer of the Airship 27 line of books. “Perfect fare by candle light on a dark rainy night." These short stories about his fictional town of “Light's End” have been published in dozens of magazines, and have also been recorded by legendary actor William (“Murder She Wrote”) Windom.

“The assumption of these stories is that there is something Other,” said the author, “larger than man and greater than our narrow view of reality. Each story, written to stand on its own, is related by setting, history, several prominent families, and a macro plot. It encompasses the Azrealites who work tirelessly to reinstate that something Other back on Earth through the manipulation of science and the occult.”

Vance has written for national and international magazines, and as a syndicated columnist and cartoonist in over 500 newspapers. His history book, Forbidden Adventures: The History of the American Comics Group, has been called a "benchmark in comics history”. He briefly ghosted an internationally syndicated comic strip, and his own strip for five years that was reprinted as a comic book. Vance has written several comic books, and is listed in the Who's Who of American Comic Books and Comic Book Superstars.

Vance’s weekly comics review column, Suspended Animation, has been continuously published for almost twenty years, currently reaching more than 700,000 readers. He also created the new Oklahoma Cartoonists Collection housed in the Toy and Action Figure Museum in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma.

Cornerstone Books publishes Masonic and esoteric books, selected pulp fiction, art literature, limited children's books, and poetry collections. For more information about Cornerstone, go to www.cornerstonepublishers.com.

Airship 27 packages and publishes anthologies and novels in the pulp magazine tradition. In the past, Airship 27 has released “Witchfire”, a series of “Captain Hazzard” pulp thrillers, more pulp fiction in “Brother Bones” and “Secret Agent X” and the WWII/SF thriller “The Light of Men”. Ramble House - Now available!
THE BLACK BOX by M. P. Shiel
M. P. Shiel is mainly known for his 1901 novel, THE PURPLE CLOUD, which was loosely adapted into the 1959 post-apocalyptic film, THE WORLD, THE FLESH AND THE DEVIL, starring Harry Belafonte and Inger Stevens. His first collection of short mysteries, entitled PRINCE ZALESKI, was also popular and will soon be published by Ramble House. But one of his most amazing, and obscure, novels is the 1930 THE BLACK BOX, which was written in a style perhaps borrowed from a contemporary writer like James Joyce. Long out of print, Ramble House is proud to bring it back for modern readers to struggle with, as did his readers of the previous century. Once you get settled into the dense, surreal prose you'll find a fantastic plot worthy of Harry Stephen Keeler. Introduced by professor of psychology, Richard L. Kellogg, this novel will amaze and amuse you — just as it did our grandfathers.

Dark Horse will be creating new graphic stories of Kull, and has enlisted one of today's brightest talents, Andy Brase, to do covers. Comic Book Art Gallery called him "the most amazing talent to enter the comic book field in the last decade," and we don't disagree.

Sculptor Tony Cipriano used Brase's visual design of Kull as reference, and we think fans of Robert E. Howard, comics art, and sculpture will agree that his powerful and regal interpretation of King Kull makes for one of the finest mini-busts in quite some time.

A when a stranger named Aaron arrives in camp, the other inmates immediately sense a difference about him.   Is he an agent of the Allied Forces rumored to be nearing the camp or a German spy sent to unmask those prisoners planning a last ditch revolt?  From the very first page, the mystery intensifies leading to a spectacular finale that resonates with the eternal power of human dignity.

And a jeering laugh that made the silence in the room crawl with menace." from Death's Harlequin.

Classic adventures from vintage pulps in a low-cost affordable format!
"Draft of Eternity" by Victor Rousseau
Reefer Madness! That's how Victor Rousseau catapults his hero centuries into the future for an exciting adventure against the Mongol conquerors of New York. Basil Clifford, a physician at Dr, Moreland's sanatarium for rare disorders of the mind is experimenting with the use of cannabis sativa in their treatment.  Taking an injection himself, Clifford finds himself travels far into the future, where he has been reincarnated as Ruuf, son of Oz, emperor of Nyork, the ruins of New York City. There he must battle the treachery of Prince Timour, a rival to the throne of Og, and for the hand of Princess Alma, and for the liberation of the enslaved native Nyorkers. Can Clifford / Ruuf thread his way through a maze of deceit, jealousy, twisted prophecies and a mechanical, killing "Buddha" to find love and happiness, or will he love by winning and win by losing? Only Time will tell.

Victor Rouseau wrote a number of science fiction serials for All-Story Weekly and for nascent SF magazines some years later. He could be counted on for a fast paced story, thrilling action, striking imagery and unforgettable characters.

Secret Agent "X": "The Hooded Hordes" by  Brant House
In the depths of the Great Depression men, thousands of men, broken of hope, desperate to matter have joined a secret society, the Defenders of the American Constitution!  But are this great hearted patriots - - of the dupes of a sinister mastermind exploiting their pain to further his own plans for a criminal empire.  Secret Agent "X" has vowed to get to the bottom of this, marshaling his own army of private detectives to penetrate the mysterious cult. But the DOACS have captured Betty Dale and threaten to fill her mouth with molten lead. Can "X" save her in time, can he unmask the DOAC"S secret master in time? Only the Man of a Thousand Faces could have a chance to pull this off.

Secret Agent "X": "The Faceless Fury" by  Brant House
Our Secret Agent "X" reprint program continues with a story from later in the series, "Faceless Fury" by G. T. Fleming-Roberts, writing as "Brant House." Someone is going around killing people, seemingly at random, leaving as the only clue to the crime a wooden children's block with a single letter. What do these letters mean?  Do they refer to a long ago crime gang, The ghosts?  And who is this faceless fury, a man with his face wrapped in bandages who can sear the flesh off his victims face with a simple glance? Can Secret Agent "X's" keen sense and mastery of disguise unravel this mystery before he becomes a victim of the Faceless Fury's deadly gaze?

Later this year Beb Books plans to reprint George Allen England's science fictional thriller, The Fatal Gift, as well as Francis Stevens' only unreprinted novel, Avalon. Plus, more adventures of Secret Agent "X" -- "Curse of the Waiting Death" and "Servants of the Skull" for sure, maybe more.   Check "Coming Attractions" for announcements or visit our website at

CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #3 - Coming in September!
Written by Timothy Truman, penciled by Tomas Giorello and Richard Corben, colored by Jose Villarrubia, cover by Frank Cho.
A young Cimmerian huntress--a character seen in Conan Vol. 0: Born on the Battlefield--and Horsa--an Aesir leader from The Frost Giant's Daughter--both cross paths with Conan as he continues his dangerous trek through the snowy mountain passes of Cimmeria. Fighting his way through the natural dangers of his barbaric homeland has been a welcome change from the mind games and treachery Conan found in the cities of the East, but there's an unfortunate lesson in treachery in store for Conan here, too. In a Richard Corben flashback sequence, Connacht--Conan's grandfather--seems to have found a role for himself working in a busy city, but as the old saying goes, "Fleas will find a dog . . . and trouble will find a Cimmerian."

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on September 17.

Hard Case Crime - Coming in June and beyond!
June 2008
SOMEBODY OWES ME MONEY by Donald E. Westlake; Cover art by Michael Koelsch
Cab driver Chet Conway was hoping for a good tip from his latest fare, the sort he could spend. But what he got was a tip on a horse race. Which might have turned out okay, except that when he went to collect his winnings Chet found his bookie lying dead on the living room floor.

Chet knows he had nothing to do with it—but just try explaining that to the cops, to the two rival criminal gangs who each think Chet’s working for the other, and to the dead man’s beautiful sister, who has flown in from Las Vegas to avenge her brother’s murder...

July 2008
NO HOUSE LIMIT by Steve Fisher; Cover art by Richard B. Farrell
Joe Martin ran the biggest independent casino on the Las Vegas strip—and the Syndicate wanted him out. So they brought in Bello, the most famous gambler in the world, to challenge Joe to a marathon craps game. The stakes: everything Joe owns...

NO HOUSE LIMIT offers a sizzling insider’s view of Las Vegas written by the Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of numerous classic noir films, including Raymond Chandler’s Lady in the Lake, Humphrey Bogart’s Dead Reckoning and Tokyo Joe, and the atypically dark final film in the Thin Man series.

August 2008
BABY MOLL by John Farris; Cover art by Robert McGinnis
Six years after quitting the Florida Mob, Peter Mallory is about to be dragged back in.

Stalked by a vicious killer and losing his hold on power, Mallory’s old boss needs help—the kind of help only a man like Mallory can provide. But behind the walls of the fenced-in island compound he once called home, Mallory is about to find himself surrounded by beautiful women, by temptation, and by danger—and one wrong step could trigger a bloodbath...

Monsters from the land, sea, and moon face our heroes in these exciting pulp adventures!

This volume contains stories by Doc Atlas creator, Michael A. Black, paranormal author, Ralph Horner, and Tom Johnson, author of the popular Jur novels. Fully illustrated by Ron Wilber, including a three page comic by the artist.

Howard Days 2008 - June  13-14, 2008!
Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains 2008 is just around the corner, and it’s not to late to still make plans to attend on Friday June 13 and Saturday June 14th. (Texas is a really big state, so there’s room for all of us!) Please click on the REH DAYS 2008 tab at the top of the REHupa page (www.rehupa.com) to find out all you’ll need to know, and now find out even more with a few changes & additions.

Project Pride and The Robert E. Howard Foundation are pleased to announce that this year's guest for Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains will be Mark Finn.  Finn is the author of Blood & Thunder: The Life and Art of Robert E. Howard (Monkeybrain Books, 2006), the 2007 Cimmerian Award winner for Book by a Single Author, which was also nominated for a World Fantasy Award and was a finalist for the Locus Award for Best Non-Fiction.

Finn has written about REH for The Dark Man, The Cimmerian, and Dark Horse Comics, among others, and his “Fists of Robert E. Howard” in The Barbaric Triumph won the 2005 Cimmerian Award for Best Essay. He also writes regularly for The Cimmerian Blog. As Creative Director for The Violet Crown Radio Players, Mark has adapted several of Howard’s Steve Costigan stories for performance. He has been one of the most instrumental voices in bringing Howard’s boxing fiction greater exposure and critical attention, and he is a lively and entertaining speaker and raconteur.

A quick note on the changes: the Friday morning 10:30 panel has been changed to a more generic “What’s Happening with REH”. REHupans, REH Foundation Board members and (hopefully) a Paradox Entertainment representative will present a discussion of what’s going on in the world of Robert E. Howard. We’ll disperse information, answer questions and encourage audience participation in talking about the Howard boom of the 21st Century.

Arlene Stephenson, President of Project Pride in Cross Plains, tells me they’ve received over 100 items for the Friday night Silent Auction at the REH Banquet, but they’re always looking for more. Actually, paperback books are NOT what they need this year, so if you’ve got some other type of REH or related item, please consider donating it to the Silent Auction, c/o Project Pride POB 534, Cross Plains, TX 76443 (or bring it with when y’all come.) It would be much appreciated (and it’s tax deductible!)

The nice folks down at Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood, caretakers of the Howard family plot there, have asked all Howard fans everywhere for help. They are underfunded and understaffed, but they are still bringing out that wonderful Texas hospitality during REH Days. There will be a canopy erected over the Howard gravesite to protect folks from the blazing Texas sun, and Greenleaf will also be providing some refreshments in the form of water and soft drinks and cookies, for all who visit to pay their respects to Robert E. Howard and his family. So, if you can see your way clear to make a donation to the Greenleaf Cemetery when you visit during Howard Days, it would be a wonderful and most appreciated gesture.

The Gift Shop at the Robert E. Howard Museum will be selling a new t-shirt this year. Yours truly will also be peddling a new Howard shirt, and I would hope others of you would take advantage of the informal Howard dealer’s area on the tables in the Pavilion for those items you’d like to sell or trade. (Think about donating some of them to the Silent Auction, as well!) And don’t forget to make your donation to Project Pride if you do decide to take advantage of the “dealer’s area”.

Robert E. Howard Days 2008 is almost here. Hope to see you there, for it’s the gala event of the year for all fans of Robert E. Howard! Y’all come!

Off-Trail Publications - Now available!
Two new books from Off-Trail Publications debuted at the Windy City Pulp & Paper Show

SUPER-DETECTIVE FLIP BOOK: TWO COMPLETE NOVELS
From the SUPER-DETECTIVE pulp:
"Legion of Robots" (November 1940), Intro by John McMahan
"Murder’s Migrants" (March 1943), Intro by John Wooley
6x9-inch perfect bound; 174 pages, $18.00

In the late-1930s, Culture Publications added a new imprint, Trojan Publications, and gave comic-book fansa reason to stay with the pulps. The reason was Super-Detective, introduced in 1940, a pulp featuring the novel-length adventures of Jim Anthony, detective extraordinaire. But Anthony was no mere sleuth. He possessed phenomenal physical and mental abilities. Patterned after Doc Savage, he battled super-villains bent on the destruction of the United States.

After ten amazing adventures, Super-Detective transformed the Jim Anthony novels to a hard-boiled detective-story mode. The criminals were less ambitious, and more susceptible to guns and fists.

Here, in this SUPER-DETECTIVE FLIP BOOK, a joint presentation of Off-Trail Publications and Reverse Karma Press, are two Jim Anthony novels, one from each phase of Anthony’s career. Flip the book and read the second novel. Also included are two introductions that explore the dual worlds of Jim Anthony, and the authors who brought him to life.

GANG PULP
Introduction by John Locke
6x9-inch perfect bound; 294 pages, $24.00

In 1929, a new kind of magazine appeared on newsstands, the gang pulps! And nothing that came before gave the pulps a worse reputation. Month after month, the stories luridly recounted the exploits of the most sadistic killers, the most craven squealers, the most coldblooded gun molls, the most corrupt cops, the most ruthless gang bosses, the most brutal mob wars, that ever escaped the realm of the imagination--a genre of extremes.

There had been outlaw heroes in crime fiction before, but none like this new breed, who toasted with bootleg liquor while their bloody victims lay dying on the floor. Almost immediately, the gang pulps came under attack from the censors. America’s morals lay dying on the pulpwood pages, they claimed.

Centered in the crosshairs was famed pulp editorHarold Hersey, creator of Gangster Stories, Racketeer Stories, Speakeasy Stories, and a raft of other gang magazines. He was threatened with prosecution. Clean up--or else!

But the story of this clash has never before been told; nor have many of the stories been available since their original publication during the dying years of Prohibition. Included in GANG PULP are nineteen rare tales, selected from both the pre- and post-censorship periods. Did Hersey buckle under? Judge for yourself in violent and profane pulp classics like "One Hour Before Dawn," "Rough on Rats," and "City of Bullets."

In "Glorifying the American Goon," an in-depth introduction based on all-new research, the world of the gang pulps is explored: what the stories were about, what happened during the attack on Hersey, how he responded, how the stories changed.

Stories complete with original illustrations.
