Novels
I have elected to divide Bloom's many novels into groups relating to what pen name they
were written under. Within these categories they are listed in chronological order of
first publication. Information on subsequent reprints is given where the same novel
appeared later under an alternative byline or title. The novels Bloom wrote under the
pseudonym Sheila Burns are straightforward romances, as are the four Mills & Boon
titles published under the name April Thorn. The stories written as Rachel Harvey are
romances with a medical setting; the same is true of the later Mary Essex and Sheila Burns
titles. The Lozania Prole series of books are all historical novels. Those books that
appeared as by Deborah Mann are biblical in theme and setting, with the exception of a
1981 reprinting of the mainstream Bloom novel Two Pools in a Field, which was
bizarrely republished under the Mann byline. However, it should be stressed that writing
under her own name, Bloom sometimes penned novels that belong in one or other of these
categories. Her family sagas and coming-of-age stories, for example, often have strong
romantic and/or historical elements to them. The two novels printed under the pen name
Sara Sloane were published in the U.S.A. by Arcadia House, although one of these is a
reprint of an earlier Sheila Burns title. A number of her books were tales written for
children or the "young adult" market. I have made a note of this where
applicable, but admittedly several are too short to be classed as full-length novels.
Finally, fans and researchers should bear in mind that this bibliography is an ongoing
work in progress as I continue to consult various sources and gradually collect the
hundreds of novels Ursula Bloom saw published in her lifetime.
