The Pulp Rack - New
addition! In honor of PulpFest, a fresh posting to The Pulp Rack. Going into the summer, I assume I'll have more free time. In reality, I seem to have less, and fewer posts make it to the site. I'll try to make up for that. We continue our Swashbuckling theme with a look at a story by a swashbuckling fictioneer, H. Bedford-Jones: "The Cardinal Smiles," from Blue Book August 1936. It ties into the work of that master of swashbuckling fiction, Alexandre Dumas. You'll find the article here: http://pulprack.com/arch/2009/07/athe_cardinal_s.html As always, thanks for your patronage. Tollin's Sanctum Books:
An open letter to the pulp community. For
those taking advantage of the discounted SHADOW and DOC SAVAGE volumes at Half-Price
Books, please be aware that Nostalgia Ventures began remaindering these books
last summer in direct violation of its sub-contract with me. Also, as of today
(July 22, 2009), Nostalgia Ventures has still not paid royalties to either Condé
Nast or me for any books it has sold since July 1st, 2008. (A semi-annual royalty
payment was due back in February, and another six months of royalties are coming
due in August.) There is a very good reason why Nostalgia Ventures/Nostalgiatown
is no longer co-publishing these books, and it involves a continuing series of
contract violations. And for anyone who may not be sympathetic because Condé Nast is a huge corporation, please be aware that Condé Nast has chosen to continue the oral agreement it had for decades with Walter Gibson, and is splitting its royalties for the SHADOW reprints with Walter's family. This is an extremely rare and decent act that is quite unusual in the publishing world. I think my SHADOW and DOC SAVAGE double-novel trade paperbacks are a great value at the $12.95 cover price. Obviously, the books are an even better value at discounted prices. However, please be aware that purchasing these books from either Half-Price Books or Nostalgiatown does nothing to encourage the continuation of these series. And since Nostalgia Ventures still hasn't paid its contract-required royalties for any of the books it has sold during the past 12 1/2 months, the money from Nostalgiatown's and Half-Price Books' sales also hasn't been continuing on to Walter Gibson's family. It's not necessary to purchase THE SHADOW and DOC SAVAGE directly from Sanctum Books to support the ongoing publishing operation and encourage the continuation of these reprints. Bud Plant Comic Art, Adventure House, Mike Chomko, Vintage Library, Girasol, Edge Books, The Mysterious Bookshop and any comic specialty shop that orders its books from Diamond Comic Distributors all get their books either directly or indirectly through Sanctum Books (which continues to make its regular royalty payments to Condé Nast and would like to continue publishing these reprints for many more years).

Leonaur
Books - Now available!
Rider Haggard's fantastic tales out of Africa have few peers. His first novel of She is possibly one of the best known and has become one of the most popular novels ever. Yet She is just the first of four exciting adventures of mysticism, intrigue, love, war and power that feature the beautiful and immortal Ayesha. The first two novels collected in this special Leonaur volume, the first of a two book set of all four novels, are She and Ayesha, the Return of She. Both feature Cambridge professor Horace Holly and his ward Leo Vincey. The third novel, in the second volume, unites two of Haggard's most beloved characters—Allan Quatermain—the little, indestructible consummate ‘white man in Africa’—trader, explorer and big game hunter and of course Ayesha herself in what is essentially a prequel to She. The final novel in volume two is Wisdom's Daughter. Of course all four novels are, true to the Haggard tradition, roller-coaster rides of action and thrills a-plenty to please his many aficionados. E. Howard - Dark Agnes And Cormac Fitzgeoffrey Next For Del Rey! Paradox has confirmed that John Watkiss will be illustrating Dark Agnes And Cormac Fitzgeoffrey. Robert E. Howard Properties and Del Rey are glad to announce the next planned book in the Howard library series: “Dark Agnes and Other Historical Adventures”, with planned release in spring 2011. Following the historical footsteps of “El Borak and Other Desert Adventures”, which takes us to Arabia at the turn of the 20th century, “Dark Agnes” will take readers further back in time, from the time of the Crusades up to 16th century France. We will follow Cormac Fitzgeoffrey, a half-Irish, half-Norman man of war who follows Richard the Lion-Hearted to 12th century Palestine - Outremer - under the banners of the Third Crusade. We will also meet Agnes de la Fere who when faced with an arranged marriage to a brutal husband in 16th century France cuts the ceremony short with a dagger-stroke and flees. Dark Agnes’ instinctive skill in combat wins her the name of Sword Woman. Her skill is tested on the coast of France where she foils a plot by Britain’s devious Cardinal Wolsey to undermine the French king, and again in the benighted alleys of Chartres, as she faces the vengeance of an executed sorcerer who will not die. As all books in the Del Rey Howard library series, “Dark Agnes” will be fully illustrated. Announcement of artist will come at a later stage. The book is presently planned for release in spring 2011. The Del Rey book series presently contains ten books, featuring Howards most well-known characters such as Conan, Kull, Solomon Kane and Bran Mak Morn. There are two volumes of genre-spanning Best of’s and one volume of Howard’s most terrific Horror stories. Presently in production is “El Borak” with a planned release in spring 2010.

I have had several
inquiries regarding retailers that will handle this book in the U.S. Subscribers, friends, and
fellow enthusiasts, we've all had a very long wait, but after six years, the concluding
volume of the three-volume' Complete Conan' will finally appear. Wandering
Star Publishers aided by Book Palace Books in London will publish Conan 3 this
coming December, 2009. I have been assured by the insiders working on this
book, that the quality standards established in the previous two volumes will
be exactingly met, and we will not be disappointed. All the same designers
and book builders of the previous volumes are participating once again.
At long last we will see the lovely artwork of Gregory Manchess presented in the
format he envisioned.I know of one for certain, Terence McVicker, Rare Books. Pre-publication price good until October 1st, is $205, and given the quality and the cost of materials - which never goes down - this is very very reasonable. If you are a previous subscriber and would like your matching number, please return this email with your 'Subscriber Number'. As a thank you to all my patient subscribers I will pay your shipping. You may pay by credit card via Paypal (I will be happy to send you a Paypal invoice), cheque, or money order. If you had missed the previous two volumes and would like to purchase a complete set with matching numbers the price is $600 including shipping. SPECIAL PRICING NOTICE Book Palace only accepts
payment in pounds sterling and not American dollars. When you order from
Book Palace your book will be £130 charged
at the current rate of exchange, so you're never sure exactly what you will be
charged. At the time Book Palace printed their flyers, the conversion to the U.S.
dollar was $195. As of 11 July, the conversion is $215. What I've decided to do
is to compromise: meet everyone in the middle and price the book at $205. California residents please remember to include your 8.75% sales tax. Terence A. McVicker, Rare Books 1745 W. Kenneth Road Glendale, California 91201 818-242-4818

I
have had several inquiries regarding retailers that will handle this book in the
U.S. Subscribers,
friends, and fellow enthusiasts, we've all had a very long wait, but after six
years, the concluding volume of the three-volume' Complete Conan' will finally
appear. Wandering Star Publishers aided by Book Palace Books in London will
publish Conan 3 this coming December, 2009. I have been assured by the insiders
working on this book, that the quality standards established in the previous two
volumes will be exactingly met, and we will not be disappointed. All the
same designers and book builders of the previous volumes are participating once
again. At long last we will see the lovely artwork of Gregory Manchess presented
in the format he envisioned.I know of one for certain, Terence McVicker, Rare Books. NOTE: Book Palace only accepts payment in pounds sterling and not American dollars. When you order from Book Palace your book will be £130 charged at the current rate of exchange, so you're never sure exactly what you will be charged. At the time Book Palace printed their flyers, the conversion to the U.S. dollar was $195. As of 11 July, the conversion is $215. What I've decided to do is to compromise: meet everyone in the middle and price the book at $205. California residents please remember to include your 8.75% sales tax. Terence A. Lone Justice: Crash! is the second time Wheatley and Tinnell have teamed up for a ComicMix serialization. Their first effort, EZ Street, the tale of two creative brothers, was nominated for a Harvey Award. It also contained a comic-within-a-comic aspect, as it featured Lone Justice as one creation of its central characters. Despite the obvious connection between the tales, however, both graphic novels can be enjoyed entirely independently from the other. “Given our title, Lone Justice: Crash!, it was difficult to resist calling this the Lone Justice: Crashcan, but life is confusing enough as it is,” Wheatley laughed. “So, c’mon by the booth at Comic-Con and pick up of the Lone Justice: Crash! Ashcan!” About Mark Wheatley The founder of Insight Studios Group, Mark Wheatley is the award-winning creator of such comic book properties as Mars, Breathtaker, Radical Dreamer, EZ Street, Frankenstein Mobster, Miles the Monster, The Mighty Motor-Sapiens, Black Hood, Prince Nightmare, Hammer of the Gods, Blood of the Innocent and Titanic Tales. He has won the Eisner, Inkpot, Mucker, Gem and Speakeasy awards, and his projects have been nominated for the Harvey award, and the Ignatz award. Stories #15 and Pulp Spirit #6 - Now available! Space opera! Fantasy! Pulp action! Great writers and great artists! And it's FREE! Pulp Spirit #6 features a great new adventure story by Rob Shelsky, "Treasure of the Last Templar"; a western, "Jayhawker Ague, Bushwhacker Fever" by David Hardy; two great crime stories, "Talons of the Eagle," and "Jack Dare: The Noteworthy Crime" by Erwin K. Roberts. PulpRack is titled "Pirates Ahoy, Mateys," and surveys some of the finest pirate fiction that the pulp magazines had to offer. Our reviewers are Kim Manning, M.J. Capps, Jerry Burge, Ralph Casson and myself. Add superior artwork by Mark Fults, Jim Garrison, Kevin Duncan, Jonathan Jensen ande Roy Coker and it's an entertainment package that's hard to beat. Don't forget to check out the issue 15 of Shelby Vick's Planetary Stories with a somewhat different Nadir McGuirk story. Wonderlust features a reprint of a controversial story by me, "Too Much Night." And by all means check out the letter column, and don't forget to let us know what you think so we can feature your comments in our next letter column. www.planetarystories.com/PS15.htm for the current ish, or you can go to www.planetarystories.com for the general index. Write us at www.planetarystories@gmail.com Call for
Submissions The idea behind Pulp Spirit is that of
the now-vanished general adventure pulp magazines such as Argosy, Blue Book or
Adventure; or even more specialized pulps like Jungle, Magic Carpet, North-West
Stories or Far East. With just a smattering of the hero pulps such as Doc Savage,
The Shadow or The Spider. We carry a broad range of fiction, all of it pulp inspired;
and we're looking for backgrounds and genres writers don't often have the opportunity
to work with nowadays. With issue 6 having just gone on line (go to www.planetarystories.com and look for the link to Pulp Spirit 6), we're starting to think about issue 7, and I assure you it's going to be a very good one. Mostly we've published crime and western stories, and I'm pleased to say that there are several good writers in those fields submitting fine stories to us now. I'm confident we'll continue to publish the best western and crime fiction stories online for many issues to come. I know I'll continue to look for them and to encourage the writers who do them best. But I'd like to see some other types of stories now, to run in addition to the regular crime stories and westerns. I'd particularly like to see adventure stories set in exotic locales. For example, stories set in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East; the jungles of Africa, India or Malaysia. Cities like Shanghai, Marseille or Cape Town. The time period you choose to write about is no problem, either. We just want a good story with good characters and a believeable setting. I'd like to run more stories set in the Canadian Northwest, especially during the goldrush. We also want historical fiction. This is a very important category to me and I'm eager to see a lot more fiction of this sort. We also need illustrators. If you like the idea of illustrating a story for an online magazine, send me a sample of your work. And don't forget Planetary Stories, the modern day home of classic space opera. Edited by Shelby Vick, it carries some of the most enjoyable fiction around. You can submit fiction and art to Planetary Stories at shelvy20012000@yahoo.com and to Pulp Spirit at geraldpage@earthlink.net. Whether you admire the pulp fiction of Johnston McCulley, James Hendryx, Arthur O. Friel, Lester Dent, Walter Gibson, Edgar Rice Burroughs or Dan Cushman, we're working hard to make Pulp Spirit the sort of publication you want to read. And the sort of publication you'd like to write or illustrate for. We regret that we can't pay for material, but we assure you that we will treat your story with love and respect and do everything in our power to attract the finest readership you could ask for.
A PulpFest Programming Update Ed
Hulse, the editor of Blood 'n' Thunder, is busy assembling a panel of pulp collectors
and dealers who will weigh in on the current state of the hobby. What's happening with pulp prices? Is demand exceeding supply? What are the hot titles? How has the surge in reprints affected the marketplace? Which magazines will future collectors be chasing? These and other questions will be addressed in this fast-paced discussion that will be held on Friday, July 31, beginning at 7:05 PM. A couple of additional notes: children 15 years of age and younger who are accompanied by a parent will be admitted free to the convention. However, they must still be registered in order to gain admittance. The hotel's special room rate offer of $79 plus tax per night runs through July 18. Please visit the site for further details. Solomon Kane, El Borak, Bran Mak Morn, Kull the Barbarian King, Conan the Cimmerian
and many other characters, all unforgettable creations that sprang from the fertile
mind of Robert Ervin Howard. A pioneer of heroic fantasy, the Texan writer
has excelled in many genres: tales of adventure, fantasy and horror, sports and
western stories, poetry. At the time when Two-Gun Bob finds a second life
in France, the Éditions de l'Œil du Sphinx are pleased to pay homage
to Robert E. Howard and display his many facets as the man, the boxer, the storyteller,
the poet. Renowned specialists and dedicated fans of Howard have all gathered to explore the epic universe of the Cross Plains Bard. This opus, under the direction of Fabrice Tortey, opens on an overview of Robert E. Howard’s life, completed by more specific biographical studies by acknowledged experts such as Rusty Burke with La dernière lettre / The Note, Glenn Lord with Herbert Klatt: le quatrième mousquetaire / Herbert Klatt: the Fourth Musketeer and The Junto, or Chris Gruber who shares with us his passion both for boxing and the creator of Steve Costigan in Howard et la fabrique de glace / Howard at the Ice House. Case Crime - Coming in July and beyond! July 2009 PASSPORT TO PERIL by Robert B. Parker, Cover art by Gregory Manchess Decades before Robert Brown Parker began writing his books about Spenser, a man named Robert Bogardus Parker (1905-1955) penned this extraordinary novel of post-war intrigue. From the corridors and compartments of the Orient Express to the shadowy, ruined streets of Budapest—which he saw firsthand as a foreign correspondent during World War II—Parker takes you on a nightmare tour of a land where life is cheap, old hatreds run strong, and a couple of Americans can find themselves in more danger than they ever imagined. With all the immediacy of the wartime dispatches Parker filed from Turkey, Danzig, Warsaw, and Bucharest and all the authority of a man who himself spent three years crossing borders without a passport and narrowly avoiding arrest by the Gestapo, PASSPORT TO PERIL paints a heart-stopping picture of desperate men in a desperate time. September 2009 LOSERS LIVE LONGER by Russell Atwood, Cover art by Robert McGinnis The death of legendary private eye George Rowell looked like an accident—but searching for the truth behind it will put down-and-out East Village detective Payton Sherwood on the corpse-littered trail of a runaway investment scam artist, a drug-addicted reality TV star—and the bewitching beauty whose appearance set it all in motion... October 2009 HONEY IN HIS MOUTH by Lester Dent, Cover art by Ron Lesser - First publication ever! If you were small-time grifter Walter Harsh, recovering in a hospital with a broken arm, you’d listen to a proposition that could net you a cool $50,000 for impersonating the South American strongman you resemble. You’d pay attention when the dictator’s sultry mistress started putting the moves on you. And in the dead of night, when no one was watching, you might just hatch a plot to get it all for yourself: the money, the girl, and the stash of stolen loot she’s conspiring to spirit out of the country... James Rollins: The Doomsday Key
- Now available! At Princeton University, a famed geneticist dies inside a biohazard lab. In Rome, a Vatican archaeologist is found dead in St. Peter's Basilica. In Africa, a U.S. senator's son is slain outside a Red Cross camp. The three murders on three continents bear a horrifying connection: all the victims are marked by a Druidic pagan cross burned into their flesh. The bizarre murders thrust Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma Force into a race against time to solve a riddle going back centuries, to a ghastly crime against humanity hidden within a cryptic medieval codex. The first clue is discovered inside a mummified corpse buried in an English peat bog—a gruesome secret that threatens America and the world. Aided by two women from his past—one his exlover, the other his new partner—Gray must piece together the horrifying truth. But the revelations come at a high cost, and to save the future, Gray will have to sacrifice one of the women at his side. That alone might not be enough, as the true path to salvation is revealed in a dark prophecy of doom. Sigma Force confronts humankind's greatest threat in an adventure that races from the Roman Coliseum to the icy peaks of Norway, from the ruins of medieval abbeys to the lost tombs of Celtic kings. A PulpFest Programming Update Continuing the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the "Hero Pulp Explosion," Don Hutchison, author of THE GREAT PULP HEROES, and panelists Dr. Garyn G. Roberts, Rick Davis, Karen Cunningham and Wooda "Nick" Carr discuss the adventures of Jimmy Christopher, "America’s Secret Service Ace" who was best known as Operator #5, and the series’ original author, Frederick C. Davis. "I Spy - Fred Davis and OPERATOR #5" will take place at 8 PM on Friday, July 31. For more information on Davis and Operator #5, please visit www.pulpfest.com. See you in a month... Pulpfest 2009, a new and
improved version of the venerable convention catering to fans and collectors of
vintage popular fiction, will be held from Friday, July 31st, through Sunday,
August 2nd, at the Ramada Plaza Hotel
and Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Sellers of pulp magazines, all-fiction digests, dime novels, and other collectible books and periodicals are already lining up for exhibit space, and the convention will be advertised and promoted extensively to capture the attention of new hobbyists as well as veteran attendees. Preliminary flyers carrying basic information are being distributed at various collectibles shows this fall, beginning with Bouchercon, the annual gathering for collectors of mystery fiction. The Pulpfest 2009 committee has already contacted several publications to inquire about advertising the convention, and additional flyers will be designed and distributed throughout the year. Additionally, the Pulpfest 2009 website is now operational and can be found at www.pulpfest.com. In the weeks and months to come, it will be updated regularly to provide new information on guests and programming as soon as it becomes available. Dealers interested in helping promote Pulpfest 2009 can download and print out either of two flyers already available on the website in PDF form. These can be distributed at collectibles shows and sent with mail-order shipments. Following an extensive search for the best available venue, the Pulpfest 2009 committee chose the Ramada Plaza for its spacious accommodations, numerous amenities, ease of access, and competitive pricing. The committee has negotiated a guest-room rate of $84 plus tax per night, significantly less than that offered by other pulp conventions. The Convention Center’s main room boasts more than 10,000 square feet of space and will accommodate up to 80 eight-foot tables. A separate room on the same floor will be set up theater-style for our evening programming. A con suite will be open for after-hours conversation and conviviality. Located just off Exit 116 of Interstate 71, the Ramada Plaza is just 20 minutes from Columbus International Airport and 10 minutes from downtown Columbus, making our convention site easily accessible to attendees whether they’re driving or flying. The Ramada offers complementary transportation via shuttle to and from the airport, downtown Columbus, and various other locations (including restaurants) within a five-mile radius of the hotel. The newly renovated hotel additionally offers all the usual amenities. High-speed wireless Internet access is now available in the main lobby, convention center, and guest rooms. Guests can avail themselves of a whirlpool, an exercise room, and both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a full-service business center. Parking is free for hotel guests and single-day convention attendees. The Ramada’s spacious restaurant, Justin’s Place, serves traditional American cuisine and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. The hotel’s cozy lounge, Bowties, is open until two a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The Ramada Plaza is an extremely popular venue for conventions of our type and size. For 15 years now it has hosted Cinevent, an annual confab of vintage-film fans and collectors of movie memorabilia. Hotel management is both committed to and experienced in providing the courteous, comprehensive service that produces satisfied conventioneers. Pricing schedules for dealer tables and registrations will be forthcoming shortly. Information on guests and programming will be posted here and on the Pulpfest 2009 website as soon as it is confirmed. Visit the Pulpfest 2009 website at http://www.pulpfest.com/

The
Robert E. Howard Foundation: Sentiment: An Olio of Rarer Works - Next REH title! As announced at Howard Days this year, our next book is entitled Sentiment: An Olio of Rarer Works. This is a collection of Howard’s humor and contemporary fiction, some non-fiction pieces, and a few other items of miscellanea. The gem of the collection is “Wild Water” which, after a conversation with Foundation members, will also appear in a future Western volume (it’s a tough story to place). Many of the other pieces are short, unfinished, and/or unpolished. Because of this, we’ll be printing a small run and would like to know just how many customers are interested in the first printing so we’ll know about how many to produce. The price will probably be the same as our other large volumes ($53 for members and $59 for non-members). The book should go to the printer soon, with delivery sometime in August or September (our printer shuts down for two weeks in the summer). Please email your interest to info@rehfoundation.org. We are NOT accepting pre-orders at this time. The contents of Sentiment (which could still change a bit) are as follows:
