Lone Justice: Crash! is the second time Wheatley and Tinnell have teamed up for a ComicMix serialization. Their first effort, EZ Street, the tale of two creative brothers, was nominated for a Harvey Award. It also contained a comic-within-a-comic aspect, as it featured Lone Justice as one creation of its central characters. Despite the obvious connection between the tales, however, both graphic novels can be enjoyed entirely independently from the other. “Given our title, Lone Justice: Crash!, it was difficult to resist calling this the Lone Justice: Crashcan, but life is confusing enough as it is,” Wheatley laughed. “So, c’mon by the booth at Comic-Con and pick up of the Lone Justice: Crash! Ashcan!” About Mark Wheatley The founder of Insight Studios Group, Mark Wheatley is the award-winning creator of such comic book properties as Mars, Breathtaker, Radical Dreamer, EZ Street, Frankenstein Mobster, Miles the Monster, The Mighty Motor-Sapiens, Black Hood, Prince Nightmare, Hammer of the Gods, Blood of the Innocent and Titanic Tales. He has won the Eisner, Inkpot, Mucker, Gem and Speakeasy awards, and his projects have been nominated for the Harvey award, and the Ignatz award. His work has been repeatedly included in the annual Spectrum selection of fantastic art and has appeared in private gallery shows as well as the Library of Congress and at the Norman Rockwell Museum. About Robert Tinnell West Virginia-born Robert Tinnell has worked in the film industry for twenty years as a writer, producer, and director. Starting as a production assistant for legendary filmmaker George Romero at the age of twenty-three, he produced several independent films including South of Reno and the iconic Surf Nazis Must Die. In 1995, Tinnell traveled to Canada where he wrote and directed the ACE-nominated film Kids of the Round Table. A Disney Channel-favorite, Kids led him on a six-year-run with Melenny Productions. Over this period, he directed Frankenstein and Me with Burt Reynolds and Louise Fletcher, Airspeed with Joe Mantegna, and Believe (starring Ben Gazzara and Elisha Cuthbert) for Lions Gate. Tinnell’s first graphic novel, The Black Forest (with co-writer Todd Livingston and artist Neil Vokes), debuted in the spring of 2004 to rave reviews and sold out in 44 days. Their follow-up, the horror/western graphic novel The Wicked West, was voted the number one graphic novel of 2004 by the staff of Scoop. Magazine. The collected edition of his online strip Feast of the Seven Fishes was nominated for an Eisner Award. About Insight Studios Group Insight Studios has been crafting great stories for over a quarter of a century in comic books, syndicated comic strips, books, game designs, television shows, novels and magazines and online. Written by Timothy Truman, penciled by Tomas Giorello and Richard Corben, colored by Jose Villarrubia. Conan Volume 7: Cimmeria marks a transitional period in young Conan's life, as he spurns civilization -- with its turncoats and legal trappings -- and returns to the beloved, brutal country of Cimmeria, where he was born and raised. The dangers found in the snowy mountain passes of his barbaric homeland are a welcome change from the mind games and treachery Conan encountered in the cities of the East, but there are unfortunate lessons in treachery to be learned here, too. When a tentative truce with the Aesir is threatened by the actions of Caollan, the first woman Conan ever loved, Conan again finds himself at the heart of a larger conflict that will test not only his physical strength and cunning mind‹but his passionate heart as well. THE
PULP FACTORY AWARDS For the past two years, pulp writer/editor Ron Fortier has been moderating the Yahoo Pulp group known as the Pulp Factory. It is currently made up of thirty-six members, among them writers, artists and devoted pulp fans. Recently the group decided it was high time to shed a public light on the resurgence of new pulp fiction and art that has exploded across the literary field. With the advent of such companies as Moonstone Books, Age of Adventure, Black Coat Press, Airship 27 Prod., Wild Cat Books and Altus Press to name a few, there have been hundreds of new pulp short stories and dozens of original pulp novels released in the past few years to warrant serious attention and support. Yet the older pulp groups and organizations, some of whom do sponsor award programs, continue to recognize only past creators and ignore these talented newcomers who are revitalizing the entire pulp community. The Pulp Factory Awards were inaugurated to publicly support, encourage and applaud the creation of new pulp fiction and art.
There
will be four separate awards handed out annually; Best New Pulp Short Story, Best
New Pulp Novel, Best New Pulp Interior Illustrations, and Best New Pulp Cover
Art. Starting in Jan. of 2010, the members of the Pulp Factory will nominate
candidates in the four categories and then, after a final ballot is determined,
cast their vote. Winners will be notified and public announcements made.
Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention promoter, Doug Ellis, was thrilled and
delighted to offer the 2010 Windy City show as the venue for the first ever Pulp
Factory Awards presentation. The physical award is a small statue in the
shape of interconnecting gears with a pen embedded into them; the pen symbolizing
both a writing quill and drawing pencil. In making this announcement, Fortier wanted it made absolutely clear that the Yahoos Pulp Factory group is not affiliated with any one publishing company and all its members are freelancers who have been published by multiple outfits. All new pulp fiction and art published in 2009, regardless of the source, will be eligible for these awards. “All of our members are extremely excited about this program and anxious to get it under way,” he said happily in a recent interview. “We think this is a good thing for all of pulpdom.” Any person or group wanting more information on The Pulp Factory Awards is asked to contact Fortier directly at (Airship27@comcast.net). They are very receptive to any positive support in this new venture.

E. Howard - Dark Agnes And Cormac Fitzgeoffrey Next For Del Rey! Robert E. Howard Properties and Del Rey are glad to announce the next planned book in the Howard library series: “Dark Agnes and Other Historical Adventures”, with planned release in spring 2011. Following the historical footsteps of “El Borak and Other Desert Adventures”, which takes us to Arabia at the turn of the 20th century, “Dark Agnes” will take readers further back in time, from the time of the Crusades up to 16th century France. We will follow Cormac Fitzgeoffrey, a half-Irish, half-Norman man of war who follows Richard the Lion-Hearted to 12th century Palestine - Outremer - under the banners of the Third Crusade. We will also meet Agnes de la Fere who when faced with an arranged marriage to a brutal husband in 16th century France cuts the ceremony short with a dagger-stroke and flees. Dark Agnes’ instinctive skill in combat wins her the name of Sword Woman. Her skill is tested on the coast of France where she foils a plot by Britain’s devious Cardinal Wolsey to undermine the French king, and again in the benighted alleys of Chartres, as she faces the vengeance of an executed sorcerer who will not die. As all books in the Del Rey Howard library series, “Dark Agnes” will be fully illustrated. Announcement of artist will come at a later stage. The book is presently planned for release in spring 2011. The Del Rey book series presently contains ten books, featuring Howards most well-known characters such as Conan, Kull, Solomon Kane and Bran Mak Morn. There are two volumes of genre-spanning Best of’s and one volume of Howard’s most terrific Horror stories. Presently in production is “El Borak” with a planned release in spring 2010.

Tarzan BBC News reports that the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris has a new exhibition looking at Tarzan's popularity and influence almost a century after the character was first created. The two-dozen Tarzan novels by American author Edgar Rice Burroughs are not much read any more, but the character remains famous worldwide through television, films and comics. The Musee du Quai Branly is an important centre for the study of the arts and cultures of Africa, Asia and the Pacific, so an exhibition about a fictional Brit created by an American might seem an odd choice. In fact the museum's head, Stephane Martin, insists the Tarzan phenomenon is well worth studying. The exhibition runs from from 16 June to 27 September 2009.

Testimonial: David Saunders is a writer and collector
in his own right and the son of the great Norman Saunders of Pulp art fame.
In an email to me he states with regard to this new Series book:
I am delighted with your new book! Congratulations! I can't wait to study it from cover to cover. It is perfectly designed to highlight the artwork images and I look forward to reading the stories to find out all about the Electric Boat. I was raised on Winsor McCay illustrations, and there was a series of Little Nemo in Slumberland sailing around the world and up to the Moon and Mars in a dirigible with rows of fans on top that looks exactly like those featured in your book, but McCay's were published more than a decade later, so I finally realized McCay was "quoting" from a popular idea of the Electric Boat! Who knew! Best wishes, David Saunders For those that would like to "sample" one of these early adventure stories there is a very short, "lost" Frank Reade Christmas story reproduced inside. There is also a brief history of the dime novel and some background on those who were involved with the creation of the WAL series. The book itself is a perfect bound (soft cover), 8.5" X 11," with a bold color cover and on the paper inside is of very bright, white glossy, stock. Note: These are of extremely limited supply and will not be reordered; Original price $20. If ordered with Volume 1, $10. VOLUME 1 (2nd printing) All the images from the FRANK READE WEEKLY can be seen here. There are more than 500 total images! (Close to 200 in color!) Also, there is an in-depth study of the "real" boy inventor (and what happened to him) and of the "real" Steam man, also the original patent with photos of him and of the original steam-man. This invention was the inspiration for the fictional character. Included from 1868 is the super rare image of the “steam-man” first appearance in fiction. There is only one known complete copy in existence! Compiling these issues and images is virtually impossible today. I have saved you a lifetime of time and effort! FRANK READE, JR. was the forerunner, America's response to Jules Verne, of Pulp Science Fiction and the Comics and the later fantastic invention novels (like Tom Swift etc.) which were to come! Original Price for Volume 1 was $60, now $34.99 plus postage ($5 USA). If you purchase soon, for a limited time, I am offering for $29.99 plus postage. Price for both books are typically $6 postage in USA (International more, please contact). Paypal please add $1 each book. These books are still of a very limited run for the very serious collector, student or university who is interested in the early days of American Popular Fiction. Please send check to or contact: Joe Rainone (ALMOND PRESS) 1631 Kenneth Ave. Baldwin, N.Y. 11510-1602 516-868-0274 Pulp9860@aol.com

Conan
Movie - Marcus Nispel to direct 'Conan' remake! VARIETY reports that Marcus Nispel has been set by Nu Image/Millennium Films to direct "Conan," ending a nine-year development ordeal to reinvent the Robert E. Howard-created barbarian first immortalized onscreen by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1982. Production on the remake is set to start late this year in Bulgaria and South Africa. Nu Image/Millennium is making the film in a co-production with Lionsgate. Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta are producing with Fredrick Malmberg. Malmberg runs Paradox, the company that holds the rights to "Conan" and the other hero franchises in the Howard library. The film will be the most financially ambitious ever for Lerner, with a script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, whose credits include "Sahara" and "Cowboys and Aliens." Paradox originally set the project at Warner Bros. but declined to ink a new rights deal after numerous unsuccessful attempts to make it with directors like Larry and Andy Wachowski and Robert Rodriguez. Malmberg then set it with Lerner in a seven-figure deal with strong progress to production stipulations. Lerner flirted with Brett Ratner last year, but the filmmaker could not commit in a timely fashion and Lerner couldn't wait. That opened the door for Nispel, who'll make "Conan" his third redo, after "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Friday the 13th." For Nispel, "Conan" is a job he has dreamed about since his childhood. Nispel said he will blend his childhood imaginings of the character with the influence of the famous Conan illustrations by Frank Frazetta, and the influence of such viscerally violent period films as Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto." Boaz Davidson, George Furla, Henry Winterstern, Trevor Short and Danny Dimfort are executive producers.

John Carter of Mars - To begin shooting
this November in Utah starring Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins! After many years in development, it
appears that John Carter of Mars is gearing up to begin production. Finding Nemo
and WALL-E director Andrew Stanton will be making his live action feature debut
with an adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1917 sci-fi fantasy novel A
Princess of Mars. KLS is reporting that Disney has signed a deal to shoot part
of the film in Utah. After the jump I also have exclusive info that Tom
Cruise was circling the project for a short period of time. The screenplay was written by Andrew Stanton and Mark Andrews with some revisions from Michael Chabon (Spider-Man 2). Stanton began interviewing prospective actors in January. Utah approved up to $5.5 million in tax credits, as Disney expects to spend $28 million in Utah when production begins in November. Stanton has previously stated that he wants to avoid the look and feel of Star Wars or any of its derivatives, and was seeking a “more naturalistic aesthetic.” Utah definitely fits the bill. Governor’s Office of Economic Development Director Jason Perry says that the production will employ over 400 people full-time for seven-straight months, and that Disney believes the film could become its next big movie series, akin to Pirates of the Caribbean. THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER is reporting Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins will star in "John Carter of Mars," the adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series that Andrew Stanton is directing for Disney. The story centers on a civil war who veteran finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where his involvement with warring races of the dying planet force him to rediscover his humanity. Kitsch will play the title character, Carter, while Collins is playing Dejah Thoris, the heir to the throne of Mars' Helium kingdom. Stanton wrote the screenplay with Mark Andrews. Jim Morris and Colin Wilson are producing. Brigham Taylor is overseeing for the studio. Kitsch, repped by WMA and Untitled, stars on NBC's "Friday Night Lights" and appeared with Collins in "Wolverine." Collins, repped by WME and 3 Arts, also had a recurring gig on HBO's "True Blood."

Pulpfest 2009, a new and
improved version of the venerable convention catering to fans and collectors of
vintage popular fiction, will be held from Friday, July 31st, through Sunday,
August 2nd, at the Ramada Plaza Hotel
and Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Sellers of pulp magazines, all-fiction digests, dime novels, and other collectible books and periodicals are already lining up for exhibit space, and the convention will be advertised and promoted extensively to capture the attention of new hobbyists as well as veteran attendees. Preliminary flyers carrying basic information are being distributed at various collectibles shows this fall, beginning with Bouchercon, the annual gathering for collectors of mystery fiction. The Pulpfest 2009 committee has already contacted several publications to inquire about advertising the convention, and additional flyers will be designed and distributed throughout the year. Additionally, the Pulpfest 2009 website is now operational and can be found at www.pulpfest.com. In the weeks and months to come, it will be updated regularly to provide new information on guests and programming as soon as it becomes available. Dealers interested in helping promote Pulpfest 2009 can download and print out either of two flyers already available on the website in PDF form. These can be distributed at collectibles shows and sent with mail-order shipments. Following an extensive search for the best available venue, the Pulpfest 2009 committee chose the Ramada Plaza for its spacious accommodations, numerous amenities, ease of access, and competitive pricing. The committee has negotiated a guest-room rate of $84 plus tax per night, significantly less than that offered by other pulp conventions. The Convention Center’s main room boasts more than 10,000 square feet of space and will accommodate up to 80 eight-foot tables. A separate room on the same floor will be set up theater-style for our evening programming. A con suite will be open for after-hours conversation and conviviality. Located just off Exit 116 of Interstate 71, the Ramada Plaza is just 20 minutes from Columbus International Airport and 10 minutes from downtown Columbus, making our convention site easily accessible to attendees whether they’re driving or flying. The Ramada offers complementary transportation via shuttle to and from the airport, downtown Columbus, and various other locations (including restaurants) within a five-mile radius of the hotel. The newly renovated hotel additionally offers all the usual amenities. High-speed wireless Internet access is now available in the main lobby, convention center, and guest rooms. Guests can avail themselves of a whirlpool, an exercise room, and both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a full-service business center. Parking is free for hotel guests and single-day convention attendees. The Ramada’s spacious restaurant, Justin’s Place, serves traditional American cuisine and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. The hotel’s cozy lounge, Bowties, is open until two a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The Ramada Plaza is an extremely popular venue for conventions of our type and size. For 15 years now it has hosted Cinevent, an annual confab of vintage-film fans and collectors of movie memorabilia. Hotel management is both committed to and experienced in providing the courteous, comprehensive service that produces satisfied conventioneers. Pricing schedules for dealer tables and registrations will be forthcoming shortly. Information on guests and programming will be posted here and on the Pulpfest 2009 website as soon as it is confirmed. Visit the Pulpfest 2009 website at http://www.pulpfest.com/
