THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL - Coming in June 2006!
Earlier this year The Alien Online reported
about Paul Malmont's
upcoming novel THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL which is "a modern take on the pulp novel, concerning the rivalry and friendship between the leading pulp writers of the thirties: Walter Gibson, creator of The Shadow, and Lester Dent, creator of Doc Savage". Simon & Schuster (US) bought the rights to the novel at auction.

I reported the information in COMING ATTRACTIONS and GOLDEN PERILS #38.  Paul Malmont learned of the write up in GOLDEN PERILS #38 and sent additional information about the book to GOLDEN PERILS publisher Howard Hopkins who has forwarded it on to me.  THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL is scheduled for publication in June 2006.

THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL
Set in 1937, when America has turned to the pulps for relief from the Depression, it is at once a valentine to an old-fashioned genre as well as a modern meta-literary examination of the classic hero pulp.  The death of H.P. Lovecraft propels the pulp era's greatest writers and rivals Walter (The Shadow) Gibson and Lester (Doc Savage) Dent into a real-life adventure even greater than the ones they imagine.  Among the characters appearing in the book are L. Ron Hubbard, Robert Heinlein, Orson Welles, and (probably of particular interest to you as a Western writer!) a young sea-faring cowboy by the name of Lew Moore.  THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL is a swash-buckling romantic tale of writers and writing, magic and love, marriage and fatherhood, ambition and loss that weaves the true lives of its real-life characters into a fictional epic.

Thanks to Paul Malmont for the above information and to Howard Hopkins for sending it to me.

DARK WATCH (Oregon Files) by Clive Cussler, Jack Du Brul  - Available November 1st!
The author of the bestselling NUMA and Dirk Pitt series returns with an all-new novel of adventure and intrigue featuring his unbeatable hero of the high seas-Juan Cabrillo.

Cabrillo and his motley crew aboard the clandestine spy ship Oregon have made a very comfortable and very dangerous living working for high-powered Western interests. But their newest clients have come from the Far East to ask for Cabrillo's special brand of assistance: a consortium of Japanese shipping magnates whose fortunes are being threatened by brutal pirates trolling the waters of Southeast Asia.

Normally, such attacks on the high seas are limited to smaller ships and foreign-owned yachts-easy targets on the open ocean. Now, however, giant commercial freighters are disappearing. But when Cabrillo confronts the enemy, he learns that the pirates' predations hide a deadly international conspiracy-a scheme of death and slavery that Juan Cabrillo is going to blow out of the water.

PULP ADVENTURECON #5 - November 5, 2005!
Bold Venture Press has announced that PULPADVENTURECON #5 is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th.  The show is at the same location as last time -- the Ramada Inn, Bordentown NJ ... just off Exit 7 of the New Jersey Turnpike. BVP has room for 48 tables, and has already sold 24.  BVP just spoke with illustrator EVERETT RAYMOND KINSTLER on the telephone, and he's accepted our invitation to be our Guest of Honor -- along with illustrator LOUIS GLANZMAN, who claims that he's always wanted to meet fellow artist Kinstler.

EVERETT RAYMOND KINSTLER is a native New Yorker who began his career at age 16, drawing comic books and hundreds of book and magazine illustrations, as well as covers for paper back books. As one of the "golden age" era of comic book artists, his illustrations for magazines, including The Shadow and Doc Savage, have influenced the pop art school.  He studied at the Art Students League, where he later taught from 1969 to 1974. Kinstler ultimately made the transition to portraitist, and soon established himself as one of the nation's foremost portrait painters. For over four decades, Kinstler also has devoted time to painting landscapes and watercolors.  Kinstler's life and artwork are the subjects of two recently published books.

LOUIS GLANZMAN was born in 1922, raised in the farmlands of Virginia, he is a self educated artist. He began his career at the age of sixteen as a comic book illustrator. In the 40's he served as an illustrator on the Air Force magazine for the US Air Forces. During the 50's he illustrated numerous children's books, including the popular 'Pippi Longstocking' series. He is listed in 'Illustrators of Children Books.' Always working as a free-lance illustrator, his paintings have appeared in Readers Digest, True, Argosey, Colliers, Boys Life, New Yorker, National Lampoon, Saturday Evening Post, etc. His career led him for a short sojourn as a court reporter for Life magazine. The covers for Time magazine enhanced his career as a portrait painter, and he is a member of the 'American Portrait Society.'

Check the Bold Venture Press website for more updates as the show approaches.

By Brian K. Vaughan, Howard Chaykin, Stuart Moore, Jason Alexander, Jed Dougherty, Phil Winslade and more, cover by Brian Bolland.

For the first time in the illustrious illustrated history of Michael Chabon Presents The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist, the mysterious Luna Moth takes center stage! Kicking it off is a stunning image of our heroine by regular cover artist Brian Bolland.

Writer Brian K. Vaughan returns with the second installment of their ongoing feature "The Escapists." This chapter also introduces rising star Jason Alexander as a new regular contributor to the feature. Next, Luna Moth takes her faithful readers on a mind-bending tour of "The Library of Consciousness" as curated by the good Messrs. Howard Chaykin and hot new artist Jed Dougherty. Decades worth of Luna Moth incarnations materialize and battle over a malicious sprite, but why? Also in this issue, Stuart Moore and Phil Winslade present their own version of the Adams/O'Neil "relevant comics" of the 1970s with "Union City Blues." Fitting neatly into the Sunshine Comics era of the Escapist series, our blue-suited hero appears in this story of Nixon, unions, and a thinly disguised gonzo journalist.

SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY AND WEIRD FICTION (1890-2004)
by STEPHEN T. MILLER and WILLIAM G. CONTENTO

This is the most comprehensive index ever published of contributions to magazines in the field of fantastic literature (speculative fiction including science fiction, fantasy and weird fiction). "It is so comprehensive that it cannot be surpassed, it can only be supplemented," writes Sam Moskowitz in his Foreword to this "fabulous guide."

"Few fields have been more remarkably indexed than science fiction and fantasy," he adds. "This compendium, of course, updates all previous such bibliographies, and prints complete contents in chronological order as well as by author and title. But where it stands utterly unique is, in addition, recording the contents of perhaps hundreds of semi-professional and amateur publications which carried an important regimen of fantasy fiction."

This mammoth index - actually, there are five separate indexes - Author, Title, Artist, Series and Contents - is being issued as a set of eight volumes. Indexed are contributions to 1,120 different magazine titles, a total of 15,818 separate issues, with contributions by 25,911 writers. Indexed are 103,171 stories and serial segments, 20,463 poems, and 39,939 articles and columns.

Here is a bird's-eye view of this mammoth undertaking:
* Each volume measures 8.5" x 11" and is red, white or blue buckram with gold leaf lettering
* Each page is double- or triple-columned and highly readable
* Set of 8 volumes, to a total of 3950 pages
* Total number of words: 4.1 million
* Author Index: Volumes 1, 2 and 3 (red buckram)
* Title, Artist & Serial Indexes: Volumes 4 and 5 (white buckram)
* Content Index: Volumes 6, 7 and 8 (blue buckram)
* 276 page Checklist of SF Magazine Index available as paperback edition.
"In all of science fiction history there is nothing like this index," co-compiler Stephen T. Miller explains in his Preface.
"You will find magazines here that can be found no place else. We give you data on magazines that were never published
but that were assembled. We cover the rarest of the rare and the obscurest of the obscure. Ashcan issues do exist and are
indexed here. Important rare fanzines are listed. It's all here."
The publication of this set of indexes is a landmark occasion.
Its appearance marks a milestone in the scholarship and bibliography of science fiction, fantasy, and weird fiction.

CONAN - News on upcoming issues!
In addition to illustrating the upcoming Conan mini-series "Conan and the Songs of the Dead," Tim Truman will also be the fill-in artist for Conan #26 and #27. "Conan and the Songs of the Dead" is written by Joe Lansdale.  Conan #26 and #27 are written by regular scripter Kurt Busiek. They contain a two-part Prince/Wazir story, involving a Conan adventure during his time with the Afghulis.  Rafael Kayanan is also working on an upcoming issue.

Visit Tim Truman's website at http://www.timothytruman.com  to view behind the scenes preliminary art plus commisioned art of other Robert E. Howard characters.

CONAN #24  - Coming in January!
Written by Kurt Busiek, art by Cary Nord, colored by Dave Stewart, cover by Tony Harris.

Eisner-award-nominated artist Cary Nord and Eisner-Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart return to Conan to launch a brand-new story arc by Kurt Busiek building up to the adaptation of Robert E. Howard's original Conan yarn, "The Hall of the Dead." Fresh from his triumphs in the City of Thieves with a willing, wanton wench at his side, Conan's out for the good life‹drinking, debauchery, and a nighttime looting spree so unrestrained that even the crowned heads of Zamora are displeased. All this attention-getting sets a rogue as wily as Conan on his tail, and if that wasn't enough, the Cimmerian's ways might just place him on the business end of an entire army.
Dark Horse Comics
32 pages, $2.99, in stores on January 18.

CONAN #24 is solicited in the November PREVIEWS (available October 26th).
The Diamond Item Code is NOV050015.

While these two warriors engage in mortal combat, an even greater evil reveals itself, a darkness that threatens to consume first the Far East, and then the world, unless Conan can make the necessary sacrifice to end its reign of misery. Superstar artist Pat Lee provides the cover for this final installment of the tale that explores King Conan's travels to the exotic eastern lands of Khitai.
Dark Horse Comics

Conan: Red Nails
Ron Perlman, star of the Hellboy franchise, Marg Helgenberger of CSI, and James Marsden (Cyclops in the X-Men films) will voice the major roles in the first feature-length animated Conan film, Conan: Red Nails.  The legendary W. Michael Kaluta is the new movie's key concept designer, with Mark Schultz (Cadillacs & Dinosaurs) adding additional designs for the 2D/3D film, which Victor Dal Chele (Spider-Man, The New Adventures of Johnny Quest) will direct from a screenplay by Steve Gold and Timothy Dolan.  New Line Home Entertainment has acquired all North American distribution rights and plans to release Conan: Red Nails on DVD sometime in 2006.

The Conan: Red Nails animated feature is about to move from the "design and production" phase to principal animation.  The film will precede a major new live-action Conan feature from Warner Bros. (see "Conan Movie Back on Track"). The return of Robert E. Howard's sword-wielding Cimmerian to the big screen can only be good news for retailers given the number of Conan licensees, which includes, to name a few of the most prominent, Dark Horse Comics, McFarlane Toys, Ballantine/Del Rey, Comic Images (CCG), and Mongoose Publishing (RPG).

James Bond 21
Angelina Jolie might be re-teaming with her "Tomb Raider" co-star Daniel Craig for his next movie. That means she would be the 007-Bond Babe for Sony's "Casino Royale."  Seems producers think
Jolie could be a perfect match for the renowned lady killer. They may just be looking for a big name to compliment Craig's 'not so big name'.

If Director Martin Campbell nods in approval, Jolie would be putting on the stilettos of Russian double agent Vespa Lynd. Also up for the role - Craig's real-life love Sienna Miller, twenty-something spunky Jessica Alba, and, according to Dark Horizons, Cecile De France ("High Tension").

Conan, at the side of Taurus, Prince of Thieves, assaults the dreaded Elephant Tower‹but deadly peril awaits at every turn, from hungry lions to giant spiders, and it'll take all his barbarian skill merely to stay alive long enough to make it inside. Yet, once inside, the tower holds secrets far stranger and darker than anything Conan could have prepared for.

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on January 18.

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on January 4.

The Zorro Television Companion - A Critical Appreciation by Gerry Dooley
- Now available!
The legendary Zorro, the masked renegade who rode through the night defending justice in late 18th century Spanish California, became in 1957 the topic for Walt Disney Studios’ first continuing live-action series and the name of a new American icon. Based on the stories of Johnston McCulley, the legend of Zorro gave birth to the archetypal dual-identity crime fighter, inspiring the creation of such future pop icons as Batman and the Lone Ranger.

This book documents the conception and success of a television legend that has endured for over 40 years. The opening chapter discusses the growth of Zorro, from Johnston McCulley’s creation of the character in 1919 to Walt Disney’s adaptation of the story and its 1957 ABC premier, and provides an introduction to the star actor behind the mask, Guy Williams. Subsequent chapters reveal behind-the-scenes aspects of the action show, discussing the secrets of Zorro’s fencing technique and daredevil stunts and giving insight into the cast, costumes, sets, crew and music of the episodes. Chapters Four through Nine deal exclusively with the content of the first, second and Walt Disney Presents seasons and provide plot summaries for each episode.

The Zorro legend continued to enjoy worldwide popularity long after the filming of the final episode, and concluding chapters discuss the cultural significance of the legend outside of America, particularly in Argentina, where Guy Williams continued his career as the famous pop-culture hero off the screen.

2006 WINDY CITY PULP & PAPERBACK CONVENTION (#6) - May 5-7, 2006
The Windy City website (http://www.windycitypulpandpaper.com) has been updated to add initial info on next year's show.  Please note that the hotel and the date have changed from what folks were told at the last con this past April.  The change is due to the Ramada O'Hare informing Windy City Con in late June that they were going to be tearing down their meeting room space.  Luckily, a replacement hotel in the area was available, although it did not have the desired weekend available.  As a result, the show has shifted about 400 yards north to the Wyndham O'Hare and the date has changed to May 5-7.  This year's theme will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of The Shadow, so if anyone has any original Shadow art they'd be willing to make available for display in the art room, they should drop Windy City Con a line.

The Call of Cthulhu - New silent film now available!
The H .P. Lovecraft Historical Society presents its all new silent film of "The Call of Cthulhu."  The famed story is brought richly to life in the style of a classic 1920s silent movie, with a haunting original symphonic score.  Using the "Mythoscope" process - a mix of modern and vintage techniques, the HPLHS has worked to create the most authentic and faithful screen adaptation of a Lovecraft story yet attempted...

Captain Hazzard - PYTHON MEN OF THE LOST CITY Chapter 1 now available!
Ron Fortier has revived the pulp hero CAPTAIN HAZZARD and is bringing him back for the fans to enjoy. He has completely rewritten the one and only CAPTAIN HAZZARD pulp story, PYTHON MEN OF LOST CITY.  The first chapter of the story is now available online at the Modern Pulp website with illustrations by Rob Davis.  This story will run as a weekly serial for the next fifteen weeks, with new chapters being posted every Sunday.  After all fifteen chapters have been posted, they will be collected into a trade paperback available from Wild Cat Books.

Then what will follow is a brand new series of Captain Hazzard adventures by Ron and veteran comic-scribe, Martin Powell. At the same time, Chris Mills and Ron have a three part comic mini-series based on PYTHON MEN in the works.
Craig Shepard is the penciller for the project and he is embellished by inker Sean Tenoff.  Both are newcomers to the field and have tremendous potential.   Shepard's pencils are delicate in the tradition of Tom Yeates and Gene Colan, whereas Tenoff's inks are smooth and true to those pencils.  Rounding the team will be Digital Caps own Jaymes as our letterer and Bishop Bowie of Graphic Balance as our colorist.   Chris Mills will also take on editing and design duties.

The idea is to bring back the character two-fold, both in pulps where he was sired, and in comics, in all new stories.
A Captain Hazzard cover mockup is shown at the right.

Dark Horse Comics has posted a four page preview of Conan #21.

The award-winning team of Busiek and Nord continue their adaptation of  one of Robert E. Howard's greatest Conan stories, with the second part of "The Tower of the Elephant." Conan, at the side of Taurus, Prince of Thieves, assaults the dreaded Elephant Tower‹but deadly peril awaits at every turn, from hungry lions to giant spiders, and it'll take all his barbarian skill merely to stay alive long enough to make it inside. Yet, once inside, the tower holds secrets far stranger and darker than anything Conan could have prepared for.

F. Paul Wilson: THE KEEP - Available in comic shops October 12th!
Author F. Paul Wilson, the creator behind the Adversary Cycle and Repairman series of novels, adapts his own New York Times bestselling novel, THE KEEP, into a comic book miniseries. He is joined by artist Matthew Smith (Hellboy) on the adaptation of the story that the Providence Journal called, “A battle between good and evil that staggers the imagination, with an ending as exciting as any horror fan could wish!”

The keep had stood empty in the Transylvanian Alps for 500 years. No one knew who built it, or why.  But on the eve of WW II, German soldiers move in and awaken something—something hungry… something as merciless as the SS einsatzkommandos accompanying them. Noted horror writer F. Paul Wilson adapts his own New York Times bestselling novel and is joined by Matthew Smith (Hellboy) on art in this, the first installment of the story that the Providence Journal called, “A battle between good and evil that staggers the imagination, with an ending as exciting as any horror fan could wish!”   Full Color, 32 pages, $3.99

Available in September, THE KEEP #1 will be the first issue of a five-issue miniseries.

Hard Case Crime - Now available!
THE COLORADO KID by Stephen King - On an island off the coast of Maine, a man is found dead. There’s no identification on the body. Only the dogged work of a pair of local newspapermen and a graduate student in forensics turns up any clues, and it’s more than a year before the man is identified.  And that’s just the beginning of the mystery. Because the more they learn about the man and the baffling circumstances of his death, the less they understand. Was it an impossible crime? Or something stranger still...? No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world’s great storytellers presents a moving and surprising tale whose subject is nothing less than the nature of mystery itself...

November 2005
THE GIRL WITH THE LONG GREEN HEART by Lawrence Block - This one is considered by many to be the best con man novel ever written.  When we kicked off our line with GRIFTER'S GAME last year, a number of you got in touch with me to say, "You know what I'd really love to see?  A new edition of my favorite Block book, THE GIRL WITH THE LONG GREEN HEART."  Well, your wish is our command.  Cover by the great Robert McGinnis because, come on, who else would you get to paint a girl with a long green heart?

December 2005
THE GUTTER AND THE GRAVE by Ed McBain - A new edition of a book that was originally published back in 1958 as "I'M CANNON--FOR HIRE."  Why the title change?  As the author pointed out to us, two reasons: The main character's name isn't "Cannon," and he's not for hire.  The character the book is about originally appeared in a series of stories in MANHUNT magazine, and at that time his name was "Matt Cordell."  When the stories were collected into a book by Gold Medal, the character's name ended up changed to "Curt Cannon" (the author's name did, too, actually) -- and both of these changes persisted when McBain wrote his first and only novel featuring the character.  Now that we're bringing the book back for its first publication in more than 40 years, it's a chance for it finally to appear the way the author wanted: under a title he chose, and with "Matt Cordell" properly restored as the character's name.  Cover by Rick Farrell, who most recently wowed you with the cover to Domenic Stansberry's THE CONFESSION and who will next wow you with the literal cliffhanger he teamed up with Greg Manchess to paint for the cover of Day Keene's HOME IS THE SAILOR.

January 2006
NIGHT WALKER by Donald Hamilton - A rare stand-alone suspense novel by the creator of secret agent Matt Helm:  This is a classic noir story that begins with a man waking up in the hospital, his head completely covered with bandages, only to find the nurses addressing him by a stranger's name.  Then the stranger's wife shows up to take him home, and things only go downhill from there...  The cover is by a newcomer to our line, Tim Gabor, and it captures the spirt of the pulps extremely well.

February 2006

A TOUCH OF DEATH by Charles Williams - When Lee Scarborough came upon the brunette sunbathing topless in her back yard, getting involved in a heist was the last thing on his mind. But somehow that’s where he found himself—sneaking through a stranger’s house, on the hunt for $120,000 in embezzled bank funds.  It looked like an easy score. But one thing stood between him and the money: the beautiful and deadly Madelon Butler.

March 2006
SAY IT WITH BULLETS by Richard Powell - Bill Wayne told his beautiful tour guide that he took the bus trip through the West to relax. But who can relax with dead bodies turning up at every stop?  From Cheyenne to Salt Lake City, from Reno to Yosemite, Bill’s secretly on a mission to discover which of his former army buddies shot him and left him for dead four years earlier. But with all the lead that’s flying around, Bill will be lucky to make it to the end of the tour in one piece...

IRON GHOST #4 (of 6) - Available in comic shops October 12th!
written by Chuck Dixon, art by Sergio Cariello, cover by Flint Henry Rammsteiger and Meier are brought in for questioning as the SS steps up the investigation following the devastation at Tempelhof Airfield, but Tannhauser and Vols are determined to discover the identity and arrest the Iron Ghost before the SS can get their hands on him. The story continues to heat up as both Berlin and the Iron Ghost are attacked on two different fronts.
October 5, 32 pages,  Full Color, $2.99

James Bond
Pierce Brosnan's days as  agent James Bond are reportedly over, "Casino Royale" director Martin Campbell confirms.
Though rumours were kicking about that the sacked 007 would be asked back for the new film, mainly because they couldn't find a fitting proxy, the film's director says otherwise.  Campbell, who directed Brosnan in "Goldeneye" (1995), told JamesBond007.net, that Brosnan's definitely not being asked back to play Bond.

There's only four candidates for the role of the suave-super agent, says Campbell, and they're Sam Worthington, Henry Cavill, Daniel Craig and Goran Visnjic.  The four actors were tested last week and in "less than three weeks", the studio will reveal who they've chosen.

JOHN CARTER OF MARS
Variety reports that Paramount Pictures has hired actor-director Jon Favreau to direct JOHN CARTER OF MARS.

The script, by Mark Protosevich, is an adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs sci-fi series. The story begins with a Civil War veteran whose retreat into a cave to avoid capture by Apache Indians takes an otherworldly turn as he's transported via time portal to the planet of Barsoom and taken prisoner by 12-foot-tall green men. Burroughs wrote 11 volumes of Carter's adventures.  Alphaville Productions' Sean Daniel and Jim Jacks will produce. Harry Knowles will co-produce.

According to Harry Knowles, the film's executive producer:
"I love Kerry (Conran), we all did. Ultimately though, Kerry found a couple of pulp properties that he was even more passionate about. Whenever he's ready to announce, I think everyone everywhere will be happy. You see... We're still going to deliver a Great JOHN CARTER movie, but Kerry will deliver another great science fiction pulp character film too. We film lovers will have twice as much to be excited about!", says Knowles.

Midnight House - Star Changes: The Science Fiction of Clark Ashton Smith
Star Changes: The Science Fiction of Clark Ashton Smith
is now available!

Star Changes is edited by Scott Connors & Ron Hilger
As most aficionados of weird fiction know, Clark Ashton Smith's career really launched with contributions to Hugo Gernsback's WONDER STORIES. While he wrote in the SF genre only sparingly, Smith's poetic vision resulted in stirring picturesque tales of interplanetary travel. Among Smith's best work are such tales as "The Vaults of Yoh-Vombis", "Dweller in the Gulf" and "The Plutonian Drug". Sadly, not only are many of his SF tales unavailable in hardcover, some have never been presented in the author's preferred texts! Smith scholars Ron Hilger and Scott Connors have assembled what is no doubt an essential Smith volume, whenever possible working from Smith's own manuscripts to prepare the texts in the form that the author himself would have preferred.

Due to contractual issues, Midnight House is unable to produce more than their standard run of 500 copies. Copies are at $45.00 and will be available this spring. As with the popular Fritz Leiber titles, Midnight House expects this book to be out-of-print on publication. Midnight House strongly advises placing orders now to avoid possible disappointment.

Retail price: $45.00
This is a limited edition of 500 casebound hardcovers.
Contents:
The Letter from Mohaun Los
The Eternal World
The Demon of the Flower
The Plutonian Drug
A Star Change
The Light from Beyond
Vulthuum
The Immortals of Mercury
Phoenix
The Monster of the Prophecy
The Vaults of Yoh-Vombis
The Dweller in the Gulf

MYSTERY*FILE ON-LINE
Steve Lewis' fanzine MYSTERY*FILE is now available online.
MYSTERY*FILE consists of reviews of mysteries and detective novels, of commentary on mystery and crime fiction, of checklists and matters of bibliographic interest.  MYSTERY*FILE was originally a "print" magazine only.

The primary focus of MYSTERY*FILE is not to be an up-to-date newsletter for the field, but a place where old and new works co-exist, where older mysteries can be brought up and discussed as well as those by the most recent hot authors, and where the careers of writers can be looked at in perspective.  MYSTERY*FILE is for those fans who love to read and talk about mysteries and series characters, and those who love to make checklists and those who love to have them, and if you can assist in  accomplishing any of these goals, then so much the better.

The "Spicy" magazines published a titillating mix of fantasy, horror, mystery, action-adventure, and suspense, punctuated by episodes of torture, sadism, sex, and other risqué elements. Although tame by current standards, and sometimes of dubious literary merit, these publications presented tales that thrilled a sensation-hungry audience. Despite the themes and constraints of the market, writers who would later become famous-including Hugh B. Cave, E. Hoffman Price, Robert Leslie Bellem, and many more-were frequent contributors. The issue reproduced here includes contributions from Robert Leslie Bellem, Lew Merrill (Victor Rousseau), Hugh Speer, Ken Cooper, Clayton Maxwell, Clark Nelson, and Harley L. Court. It is available for $20.
