Arkham
House - Other Worlds Than Ours by Nelson Bond
- Now shipping! Other Worlds Than Ours is Nelson Bond’s 3rd book for Arkham House. It follows 1968’s Nightmares and Daydreams and 2002’s The Far Side of Nowhere. Both rank among Arkham House’s fastest sellers, proving once again that Nelson Bond’s reputation as a writer of fantasy fiction continues long after he ceased writing for publication. This collection draws upon previously uncollected SF tales from the 1940s. The majority are hard to find novelettes originally published in BLUE BOOK, ASTOUNDING, THRILLING WONDER STORIES, PLANET STORIES and AMAZING STORIES. There is also a complete novel, the exciting “Gods of the Jungle,” which appeared in the June and July 1942 issues of AMAZING STORIES. An American pilot during World War II is forced to land in the jungle where he discovers an ancient temple that leads him to an ancient civilization founded by visitors to Earth. The remaining 12 stories are grouped according to their subjects and cover travel to remote and distant planets in the universe, where travelers meet unusual adventures and sometimes terrifying creatures who inhabit remote planets and moons. “Martian Caravan” and “Wanderers of the Wolf Moon” are two rare and hard-to-find tales that will haunt you for a long time. Arkham House has already contracted for another Nelson Bond book, Probability Zero, It will appear in the next few years and will publish many of his previously forgotten fantasy tales, and another long-lost novel. Jacket Art by Alan Fore Cover Design by JenGraph. Price: $35.95 Visit the Arkham House website to order this title.

CLASSIC COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS
#5: CONAN - Coming in March 2006! On sale March 15, 5" tall, fully painted, packaged in a litho-printed full-color tin box and included is a vintage-style pinback button, and booklet, limited to 750 pieces, $49.95 Dark Horse's Classic Comic Book Characters series features characters from a variety of publishers' books, not just Dark Horse. We are very pleased to present one of the all-time favorite characters, Robert E. Howard's Conan, as the fifth release in our Classic Comic Book Characters series. Although Conan first appeared in the pulp magazines of the 1930s, it was his debut as a comic book character in the 1970s that really rekindled interest in the character. The comics series was groundbreaking in many ways, elevating the standard of artwork and pushing the envelope of content with its savage approach to the "sword and sorcery" genre. Our statue is inspired by that version of Conan, but also recalls the 1940's sculpting and painting style of "syroco" statues with a result which Craig Yoe describes as "primitive but charming". Conan stands 5" tall and is full-painted. Each statuette is packaged in a litho-printed full-color tin box and included is a vintage-style pinback button, and booklet about the character and his creator, limited to 750 pieces. CLASSIC COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS: CONAN is solicited in the October PREVIEWS (available September 28th). The Diamond Item Code is OCT050062.

Their power was spreading from State to State like a hideous blight. Their spies seemed everywhere - and against this dread secret society went the Man of a Thousand Faces, into a danger that even he did not foresee! The Second Life of Monsieur the Devil, by H. Bedford-Jones ISBN: 1-55742-388-1 (hardcover, $29.95) ISBN: 1-55742-389-X (trade paperback, $12.95) From the November 1920 issue of the classic pulp magazine "The Blue Book" comes this short novel, "a highly colored Oriental romance of the sort the author of 'The Brazen Peacock' and 'The Talking Trees' has made famous." Jimgrim and the Seventeen Thieves of El-Kalil, by Talbot Mundy ISBN: 1-55742-386-5 (trade paperback, $12.95) ISBN: 1-55742-387-3 (hardcover, $29.95) "Jimgrim and the Seventeen Thieves of El-Kalil" originally appeared in the February 20th, 1922 issue of ADVENTURE magazine. This edition has been retypeset from the original magazine pages. "Mundy's forte wasn't simply good research; Mundy was a born storyteller. Besides his predilection for creating tall tales around his early life as a scoundrel, Mundy could create larger than life heroes. Unlike creations like Robert E. Howard's "Conan" or Edgar Rice Burroughs' "John Carter of Mars," Mundy's heroes, while courageous and plenty brawny when the situation required it, were capable of bluffing, playing one enemy versus another, and exploiting the character flaws of foes, and the fortes of his associates -- traits largely absent in other adventure heroes of the time. Also, like Mundy himself, his characters pondered the meaning of life, of destiny, a spiritual development that would mold their characters and set them apart from the typical pulp heroes. "In 'The Seventeen Thieves of El-Kalil,' Jimgrim is sent to Hebron to defuse a situation where the Moslem population, led by a family of thieves, is intent on slaughtering the Jewish population. It takes all of Jimgrim's savvy to play off the different factions until help can arrive from Jerusalem. If I had one warning about the stories for today's readers it is that while Mundy could hardly be accused of racism, his characters' views do reflect 1920s attitudes about the ethnic/religious groups of the region." --Georges T. Dodds, SF Site

The major shooting location for "Casino Royale" will move to an Atlantic island off the east coast of the USA, and not South Africa as originally planned. The Copper Princess ($7) involves resurrection of an Incan Princess, a jealous girlfriend, Russian revolutionaries and the tsars secret police. It's a rich, romantic tale of science that crosses that line that science is not meant to cross. The Abyss of Wonders ($7), perhaps the greatest adventure story ever published by ARGOSY takes a band of comrades on a journey across half the world to a lost civilization in the inhospitable Gobi Desert, to the oldest city in all the world. Captain Trouble ($9) was a series a six novelets published in THRILLING ADVENTURES about a man destined by ancient Chinese prophecy to become the Warlord of the World. Peter the Brazen starred in a series of adventures written by George F. Worts from 1918 to 1934. Most of these stories were recently collected in a large, expensive hard cover. Left off of the collection was the stories in the 1919 novel published by Lippincott. That hardcover comprised edited, abridged versions of the first six stories in series. Those stories appeared in their entirety on the recent collection. For $12, less than a tenth the cost of the complete collection, you can sample this wonderful series in this reprint of the 1919 Lippincott edition. Frank L. Packard created the definitive hero pulp with Jimmie Dale, aka The Grey Seal ( named for the stickers he left behind as a calling card). Playboy millionaire, man with a secret identity, possession a secret hideout called his Sanctuary, blamed for crimes he did not commit, hated by crooks and cops alike.... The Shadow, The Spider, Secret Agent X, even The Batman all owe a debt of gratitude to Packard's early creation. Beb Books are brought three of Jimmie Dale's books back into print. The Adventures of Jimmie Dale ($8), The Further Adventures of Jimmie Dale ($8) and Jimmie Dale and the Phantom Clue ($8) as well as The White Moll ($8), an intrigue twist on the Grey Seal, where a woman has to hide in the Badland as she tries to clear her name. Shorter but more tightly plotted than the Jimmie Dale stories, the White Moll is a delight to read. As a Pulpcon special, you can buy all four books for a mere $20! —a savings of over ten dollars. CLASSIC
COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS #5: CONAN - Delayed until March!

Case Crime - Coming in October-November-December! October 4, 2005 THE COLORADO KID by Stephen King; Cover art by Glen Orbik On an island off the coast of Maine, a man is found dead. There’s no identification on the body. Only the dogged work of a pair of local newspapermen and a graduate student in forensics turns up any clues, and it’s more than a year before the man is identified. And that’s just the beginning of the mystery. Because the more they learn about the man and the baffling circumstances of his death, the less they understand. Was it an impossible crime? Or something stranger still...? No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world’s great storytellers presents a moving and surprising tale whose subject is nothing less than the nature of mystery itself... November 2005 THE GIRL WITH THE LONG GREEN HEART by Lawrence Block; Cover art by Robert McGinnis She was every man’s dream—and one man’s nightmare. Johnny Hayden and Doug Rance had a scheme to take real estate entrepreneur Wallace Gunderman for all he was worth. But they needed a girl on the inside to make it work. Enter Evelyn Stone: Gunderman’s secretary, his lover – and his worst enemy. Gunderman had promised to marry her, but never came through. Now she’s ready to make him pay... December 2005 THE GUTTER AND THE GRAVE by Ed McBain; Cover art by Richard B. Farrell Detective Matt Cordell was happily married once, and gainfully employed, and sober. But that was before he caught his wife cheating on him with one of his operatives and took it out on the man with the butt end of a .45. Now Matt makes his home on the streets of New York and his only companions are the city’s bartenders. But trouble still knows how to find him, and when Johnny Bridges shows up from the old neighborhood, begging for Matt’s help, Cordell finds himself drawn into a case full of beautiful women and bloody murder. It’s just like the old days—only this time, when the beatings come, he may wind up on the receiving end... Announcements: At the annual Bouchercon mystery convention held over Labor Day weekend in Chicago, Max Phillips' FADE TO BLONDE won the Shamus Award for best paperback novel of the year. Max, of course, is not only the author of FADE TO BLONDE but also the co-founder of Hard Case Crime and the gifted graphic designer responsible for the look of the Hard Case Crime books, including all those gorgeous covers. It's a well-deserved award, and Hard case Crime is very proud of him. And keep your eye on our Web site, http://www.hardcasecrime.com, for more news. Over the next few months we've got some pretty terrific books coming up, starting with Lawrence Block's THE GIRL WITH THE LONG GREEN HEART in November (featuring a stunning new McGinnis cover) and Ed McBain's long-lost THE GUTTER AND THE GRAVE in December. Then in 2006 we'll be bringing you work by authors ranging from Pete Hamill, Charles Williams, and Richard Stark to Ken Bruen and Jason Starr (who both, incidentally, also won well-deserved awards at Bouchercon). Plus we've got some major announcements coming up -- including a chance for you or someone you know to appear on the cover of a Hard Case Crime book!

2006 WINDY CITY PULP &
PAPERBACK CONVENTION (#6) - May 5-7, 2006 The Windy City website (http://www.windycitypulpandpaper.com) has been updated to add initial info on next year's show. Please note that the hotel and the date have changed from what folks were told at the last con this past April. The change is due to the Ramada O'Hare informing Windy City Con in late June that they were going to be tearing down their meeting room space. Luckily, a replacement hotel in the area was available, although it did not have the desired weekend available. As a result, the show has shifted about 400 yards north to the Wyndham O'Hare and the date has changed to May 5-7. This year's theme will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of The Shadow, so if anyone has any original Shadow art they'd be willing to make available for display in the art room, they should drop Windy City Con a line. For more info on the con, please contact: Doug Ellis 13 Spring Lane Barrington Hills, IL 60010 847-217-4241 info@windycitypulpandpaper.com http://www.windycitypulpandpaper.com

James
Bond According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar nominated scribe, Paul Haggis ("Million Dollar Baby" and "Crash"), has signed on to do a rewrite for "Casino Royale," the upcoming 21st installment in the James Bond franchise. Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson originally enlisted Neal Purvis and Robert Wade -- screenwriters on "The World Is Not Enough" and "Die Another Day" -- for the first crack at adapting Ian Fleming's 1953 novel. Haggis is taking the next shot for director Martin Campbell ("GoldenEye"). MGM and Sony can take as much rewriting time as necessary, because the franchise is missing a leading man. Rumored candidates to take on the role of 007 are Goran Visnjic ["E.R"], Alex O'Lachlan ["The Oyster Farmer"] and Clive Owen ["Closer"]. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Director Martin Campbell wants to find a complete unknown. He wants to take credit for re-energizing the franchise again.

POLAR SHIFT
- Now available! Polar shift: It is the name for a phenomenon that may have occurred many times in the past. At the very least, it disorients birds and animals and damages electrical equipment. At its worst, it causes massive eruptions, earthquakes, and climatic changes. At its very worst, it would mean the obliteration of all living matter, and if that happens-exit Earth. Sixty years ago, an eccentric Hungarian genius discovered how to artificially trigger such a shift, but then his work was lost, or so it was thought. Now, the charismatic leader of an anti-globalization group plans to use the work to give the world's industrialized nations a small jolt, then reverse the shift back again. The only problem is, it cannot be reversed. Once the shift starts, there is nothing anyone can do about it. Austin, Zavala, and the rest of the NUMA Special Assignments Team certainly have faced dire situations before, but never have they encountered anything like this. This time . . . even they may be too late. Putnam Hardcover Street date: August 30, 2005 ISBN: 0399152717 $26.95
PULP
ADVENTURECON #5 - November 5, 2005! Bold Venture Press has announced that PULPADVENTURECON #5 is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th. The show is at the same location as last time -- the Ramada Inn, Bordentown NJ ... just off Exit 7 of the New Jersey Turnpike. BVP has room for 48 tables, and has already sold 24. BVP just spoke with illustrator EVERETT RAYMOND KINSTLER on the telephone, and he's accepted our invitation to be our Guest of Honor -- along with illustrator LOUIS GLANZMAN, who claims that he's always wanted to meet fellow artist Kinstler. EVERETT RAYMOND KINSTLER is a native New Yorker who began his career at age 16, drawing comic books and hundreds of book and magazine illustrations, as well as covers for paper back books. As one of the "golden age" era of comic book artists, his illustrations for magazines, including The Shadow and Doc Savage, have influenced the pop art school. He studied at the Art Students League, where he later taught from 1969 to 1974. Kinstler ultimately made the transition to portraitist, and soon established himself as one of the nation's foremost portrait painters. For over four decades, Kinstler also has devoted time to painting landscapes and watercolors. Kinstler's life and artwork are the subjects of two recently published books. LOUIS GLANZMAN was born in 1922, raised in the farmlands of Virginia, he is a self educated artist. He began his career at the age of sixteen as a comic book illustrator. In the 40's he served as an illustrator on the Air Force magazine for the US Air Forces. During the 50's he illustrated numerous children's books, including the popular 'Pippi Longstocking' series. He is listed in 'Illustrators of Children Books.' Always working as a free-lance illustrator, his paintings have appeared in Readers Digest, True, Argosey, Colliers, Boys Life, New Yorker, National Lampoon, Saturday Evening Post, etc. His career led him for a short sojourn as a court reporter for Life magazine. The covers for Time magazine enhanced his career as a portrait painter, and he is a member of the 'American Portrait Society.' Check the Bold Venture Press website for more updates as the show approaches. For more information e-mail Rich Harvey, publisher at boldventurepress@aol.com

SLIPSTREAM STORIES - Stories in
the "Spicy" tradition wanted! Editors: Nick Mamatas and Jay Lake Submission Period: September 1 to October 15, 2005 ONLY Queries: spicy@wheatlandpress.com Publisher website: http://www.wheatlandpress.com What we're looking for is work that embraces both the traditions of the old "spicy" pulps (not just adventure, but adventure and bosoms out to here!) and the stylistic innovations and reader affect of that non-genre genre, slipstream. And when we say embrace, we mean embrace, the way a sweaty and bruised naif cut free from a phallic V2 rocket by a square-jawed test pilot will embrace her savior. What We Want: Stuff that could have appeared in SPICY STORIES, SPICY DETECTIVE, SPICY WESTERN, SPICY ADVENTURE, REAL SPICY HORROR, SPICY MYSTERY STORIES, SPICY MOVIE TALES, SPICY AIR TALES, etc., except so incredibly different as to be categorizable only as slipstream. And we want it between 4000-15000 words. Pay 4 cents a word with a $400 maximum. What We Don't Want: Simple pastiches or parodies, stories that qualify as slipstream only through a "clever" reversal (the men are in tattered gowns, and brave women save them, with nothing else to it), wall-to-wall assbanging (we said spicy, not sleazy), psychological realism, or non-genre stories. To be released at LACon / WorldCon, in September, 2006, by Wheatland Press E-submissions will be deleted unread unless sent with prior permission. If you must e-sub, please query first.
