'New' Mike Hammer Novels by Mickey Spillane - To Be Published between 2012 and 2014! Titan Books has acquired world publishing rights, including digital, to three newly discovered Mickey Spillane/Mike Hammer thrillers and, in an exclusive deal with award-winning author Max Allan Collins (Road to Perdition), will roll out with the first novel Lady, GO DIE! In hardcover in May, 2012, and publish the second, COMPLEX 90 in May, 2013, and third KING OF THE WEEDS in May 2014. Perhaps the most exciting discovery in Mickey’s papers, Collins explains, is the sizable fragment of what was clearly the second Mike Hammer novel, Lady, Go Die!, written between I, the Jury and My Gun is Quick (even predating the second completed/published Hammer novel, The Twisted Thing, held by Spillane until 1966). Cath Trechman, Fiction Editor for Titan Books said: “Titan Books are proud to be publishing these “lost” Mike Hammer stories for the very first time, completed with insight and imagination from Spillane’s drafts and notes by his trusted friend Max Allan Collins. Spillane’s tough-talking, hard-drinking, violent hero Mike Hammer sold millions of books and changed the landscape of popular pulp fiction for good and Titan is delighted to bringing him to a 21st century audience."

Haffner Press - HAFFNER PRESS ANNOUNCES NEW MYSTERY TITLES! While counting down the days to Pulpfest 2011 in Columbus, Ohio, we're pleased to announce the first two titles in our new hardcover line of Mystery titles: THE COMPLETE JOHN THUNSTONE by Manly Wade Wellman and THE COMPLETE I.V. FROST by Donald Wandrei. Both of these titles will be smythe-sewn hardcovers with full-cloth binding and printed on archival-quality acid-free paper. We will have more details, including availability, pricing, and ordering information in the near future. We are currently negotiating for original cover art and comprehensive introductions. THE COMPLETE JOHN THUNSTONE by Manly Wade Wellman Conceived by Manly Wade Wellman and Weird Tales editor Dorothy McIlwraith in 1943, John Thunstone is a scholar and playboy who investigates mysterious supernatural events. Large and strong, intelligent, handsome, and wealthy, he has the typical attributes of a heroic character. He is also well-read in occult matters and has access to weapons (such as a sword-cane forged by a saint) that are especially potent against vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures. In addition to the ghosts and other traditional supernatural beings, several of Thunstone's enemies are Wellman's unique creations. Particularly compelling (or whatever adjective applies) are the the enigmatic (or eery or whatever) shonokins, a race of human-like creatures who claim to have ruled North America before the coming of humans. Thunstone's most persistent foe is the diabolical (or whatever) sorcerer Rowley Thorne, a character loosely based on the real occultist Aleister Crowley. Thunstone originally appeared in short stories published in WEIRD TALES from 1943 to 1951 with a final short story in 1982. Wellman would later write two novels featuring Thunstone: What Dreams May Come (1983) and The School of Darkness (1985). Contents: "The Third Cry to Legba" - WEIRD TALES, November 1943 "The Golden Goblins" - WEIRD TALES, January 1944 "Hoofs" - WEIRD TALES, March 1944 "The Letters of Cold Fire" - WEIRD TALES, May 1944 "John Thunstone's Inheritance" - WEIRD TALES, July 1944 "Sorcery from Thule" - WEIRD TALES, September 1944 "The Dead Man's Hand" - WEIRD TALES, November 1944 "Thorne on the Threshold" - WEIRD TALES, January 1945 "The Shonokins" - WEIRD TALES, March 1945 "Blood from a Stone" - WEIRD TALES, May 1945 The Dai Sword" - WEIRD TALES, July 1945 "Twice Cursed" - WEIRD TALES, March 1946 "Shonokin Town" - WEIRD TALES, July 1946 "The Leonardo Rondache" - WEIRD TALES, March 1948 "The Last Grave of Lill Warran" - WEIRD TALES, May 1951 "Rouse Him Not" KADATH, July 1982 "What Dreams May Come" Doubleday, 1983 "The School of Darkness" Doubleday, 1985 THE COMPLETE I.V. FROST by Donald Wandrei It may come as a surprise to some that Donald Wandrei wrote more mysteries than all his horror, fantasy, and science fiction tales combined. This volume collects all eighteen adventures of Wandrei's ratiocinative detective I.V. Frost, who is ably assisted by his beautiful and tough female assistant, Jean Moray. A scientist and inventor, Frost has his own approach to solving mysteries. Rather than following the usual hard-drinking, trench-coated style of many of his contemporaries, Frost's strategy was to mix the logic of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes with the technology of Lester Dent's Doc Savage. In 2000, D.H. Olson edited a volume published by Fedogan and Bremer collecting the first eight of Frost's adventures. A second volume of the remaining 10 tales was promised but never materialized. Contents: "Frost" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, September 1934 "Green Man" ? Creeping - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, November 1934 "They Could Not Kill Him" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, February 1935 "Bride of the Rats" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, April 1935 "The Artist of Death" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, June 1935 "Death Descending" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, August 1935 "Impossible" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, October 1935 "Merry-Go-Round" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, December 1935 "Giants in the Valley" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, February 1936 "Bone Crusher" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, April 1936 "Panda" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, July 1936 "The Lunatic Plague" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, August 1936 "Killer19s Bait" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, November 1936 "Stolen from the Morgue" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, January 1937 "Blood in the Golden Crystal" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, March 1937 "A Beetle or a Fox" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, June 1937 "Skeletons, Inc" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, August 1937 "Electric Devils" - CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES, September 1937

Crippen & Landru Publishers - Now available! The Exploits of the Patent Leather Kid by Erle Stanley Gardner, edited by Bill Pronzini The Patent Leather Kid is an elegant crook, hiding his identity with mask, gloves, and shoes made out of black patent leather. In truth, he is a wealthy, seemingly indolent socialite, who becomes a terror to the underworld. In the gang-ridden world of the Depression, The Kid knows that “the rulers of today were the corpses of tomorrow, where survival was the price of keen observation and rapid thought.” His enemy, Inspector Brame, believes that The Kid “is apparently one who loves adventure. His crimes are committed for excitement, rather than gain. And, in everything he does, he gives proof of a superior mentality.” This is the third volume in Crippen & Landru's collections of Erle Stanley Gardner's short stories. The book is edited by the modern master of the private-eye story, Bill Pronzini. It is also the 30th volume in our “Lost Classics” series. The Astounding, the Amazing,
and the Unknown

Malmont’s new novel is a rollicking blend of fact and fiction about
the men and women who were recruited to defeat the Nazis and ended up
creating the future. In 1943, when the United States learns that Germany is on the verge of a deadly innovation that could tip the balance of the war, the government turns to an unlikely source for help: the nation’s top science fiction writers. Installed at a covert military lab within the Philadelphia Naval Yard are the most brilliant of these young visionaries. The unruly band is led by Robert Heinlein, the dashing and complicated master of the genre. His “Kamikaze Group,” which includes the ambitious genius Isaac Asimov, is tasked with transforming the wonders of science fiction into science fact and unlocking the secrets to invisibility, death rays, force fields, weather control, and other astounding phenomena—and finding it harder than they ever imagined. When a German spy washes ashore near the abandoned Long Island ruins of a mysterious energy facility, the military begins to fear that the Nazis are a step ahead of Heinlein’s group. Now the oddball team, joined by old friends from the Pulp Era including L. Ron Hubbard (court-martialed for attacking Mexico), must race to catch up. The answers they seek may be locked in the legendary War of Currents, which was fought decades earlier between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. As the threat of an imminent Nazi invasion of America grows more and more possible, events are set in motion that just may revolutionize the future—or destroy it—while forcing the writers to challenge the limits of talent, imagination, love, destiny, and even reality itself. Blazing at breathtaking speed from forgotten tunnels deep beneath Manhattan to top-secret battles in the North Pacific, and careening from truth to pulp and back again, The Astounding, the Amazing, and the Unknown is a sweeping, romantic epic—a page-turning rocket ship ride through the history of the future. |

Friends of Old Time Radio Convention -
October 20-23, 2011!
As it has for the past 35 years, the Friends of Old Time Radio
will meet at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, N.J., on the third weekend
in October, this year the 20th-23rd, to gather stars and fans to celebrate
dramatic radio. The big difference this year is that it will be
our final convention and we want to go out with the biggest, best convention
we've had in years. No expense will be spared to bring in as many of the living radio acting veterans we can find. We have great historians, directors, authors and actors clamoring to put on their very best programs - and we hope that the annual excuse we hear from so many "I don't have time, I'll get there one of these years" just won't apply. So far, we know that Arthur Anderson, veteran of The Mercury Theater, 29 years as the spokes-leprechaun for Lucky Charms, and author of the definitive history of radio program "Let's Pretend," will direct an episode of this series as his personal sign-off of more than 20 years attending our events. Outstanding actors such as Rosemary Rice of Archie on the radio and I Remember Mama on TV, Tommy Cook of Red Ryder, Nan Warren of Let's Pretend, Richard Herd of Theater 5 and (later) Seinfeld, Will Hutchins of Sugarfoot, legendary X-1 writer George Lefferts, actor/d.j. Michael C. Gwynne, the son of big band leader Frankie Kaye, are already confirmed with many more to come. The convention will as always feature live recreations of classic shows, panel discussions with the stars, music, the biggest nostalgia dealer rooms around, selling movies, TV, hundreds of thousands of hours of old time radio recordings and more, and unique opportunities to directly interact with the stars and ask about their amazing careers. No one is behind a velvet rope charging for autographs at Friends of Old Time Radio. The stars are having just as much fun as you are, if not more. The program is split between a day session that lasts from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and features many of the panels and discussions, as well as live recreations. The evening program includes a buffet dinner followed by two recreations as well as awards to the special guests and raffles and the like. We try to make the dinner recreations our most star-studded, exciting theater. The guests are distributed across the tables at dinner, so you will always have at least one celebrity at your table. Dinner rates are inclusive of the day rates. We haven't set final pricing yet but in recent years, the day admission has been $25 ($20 in advance) and dinners ranged from $60 - $75 or so depending on the day, which packages available for people staying for all four days. We're also looking for any old time radio actors or other professionals such as writers, sound effects specialists, producers, casting agents, etc., who are interested in attending to contact us. |

This year, the convention will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE and the birth of the hero pulp. There will be a showing of three rarely seen Shadow short subjects from 1931-1932, a presentation on The Shadow of the radio, a look at Philip Jose Farmer's thoughts on The Shadow, and a panel called "Walter B. Gibson and The Shadow" featuring three gentlemen who knew Gibson and wrote books about Walter and his character. FarmerCon, a convention celebrating the life and work of "Grand Master of Science Fiction" Philip José Farmer, will be held at this year's PulpFest. Further details about FarmerCon have now been posted to the home page of the PulpFest website. Read all about what programming the fans of Farmer are planning to present by visiting the PulpFest website. "New Fictioneer" readings of Duane Spurlock ("A Quiet Night in the Dark in La Plata, Missouri, 1942" and "Pretty Polly") and Wayne Reinagel ("Pulp Heroes—Khan Dynasty" and "Modern Marvels—Viktoriana").
Almost a full year before
his first appearance in the pulps, The Shadow debuted as the mysterious
narrator
of The Detective Story Hour, a CBS radio program sponsored by Street & Smith. On Friday evening, July 29th, popular culture historian Martin Grams will contribute to PulpFest’’s salute to the 80th anniversary of the first hero pulp by presenting a fascinating slide show concerning the radio program that inspired the pulp magazine. Join David Saunders on Friday, July 29th at 8 PM in the PulpFest programming room for "Wild American Pulp Artists," a presentation on illustrators Emery Clarke, Robert Harris, and Milton Luros, all of them born 100 years ago in 1911. All three artists drew black and white interior art and painted front covers for a variety of magazines. The son of Norman Saunders, David is an accomplished artist himself. Additionally, he is probably the leading expert on pulp magazine art, having written and spoken extensively on the subject. PulpFest Celebrates 100 Years of Talbot Mundy When it comes to adventure fiction, one of its greatest practitioners was Talbot Mundy, born William Lancaster Gribbon in 1879. He began writing in his early thirties, following years of adventuring in India, Africa, and other parts of the world. Or so the story goes; much of his early life was romanticized over the years, largely by the author himself. This summer, PulpFest will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Talbot Mundy’s first appearance in print with a showing of THE BLACK WATCH, a film adaptation of Mundy’s “King of the Khyber Rifles,” the author's best known work. Registration A prepaid, three-day membership to PulpFest 2011 will cost $30. A three-day membership paid at the door will cost $35. Friday or Saturday, single-day memberships will cost $15. A Sunday only membership, available only at the door, will cost $5. Please be aware that many dealers will be packing up on Sunday, preparing to depart for their homes. Children age 15 and younger, accompanied by a parent, will be admitted for free. |
