The Vanished Legion by Donald E. Keyhoe
Donald E. Keyhoe’s seven stories of The Vanished Legion, from the pages of Dare-Devil Aces, have been collected into one volume and is now available to order from AmazonAdventure House, and Mike Chomko Books.

Surely you remember from History class reading about when the Germans found a way to turn Allied pilots into Dwarfs, and in doing so, driving them mad and sending them back to attack their former squadrons. Or when the grizzly green death struck and left an unsettling learing grin upon it's victims twisted faces. Maybe you recall Germany’s plan to render the Allies defenseless with a ray that would block out all sight and sound. No, this obviously isn't the history they taught you about in school! But here at Age of Aces we are dedicated to furthering your education.

So join Dick Traine, Monte Prince, Bill Hammond and the rest of the Squadron of Forgotten Men as Colonel Meredith sends them out against some of the most bizarre schemes the Boche ever threw against the Allies in WWI!

Edited by Ross Lockhart
The Cthulhu Mythos is one of the 20th century's most singularly recognizable literary creations. Initially created by H. P. Lovecraft, the Cthulhu Mythos story cycle has taken on a convoluted life of its own. Some of the most prodigious writers of the 20th century, and some of the most astounding writers of the 21st century have planted their seeds in this fertile soil. The Book of Cthulhu harvests the weirdest and most corpulent crop of these modern mythos tales. Authors include Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, F. Paul Wilson, Poppy Z. Brite, and many others.

Joshi makes his selection from the early tales of nightmares and madness to the overpowering cosmic terror of "The Call of Cthulhu." This is the first paperback edition to include the definitive corrected texts of these classics of American fantasy fiction.

The group ends up in Northern Canada, where they must enter a cave network believed by locals to be home to legendary creatures called They Who Follow. These monsters are said to devour human flesh; no one has ever survived a journey into their caves. THE DEFINITIVE FLASH GORDON AND JUNGLE JIM, VOLUME 1
By Alex Raymond
Coming in September!

IDW’s Library of American Comics is producing The Definitive Flash Gordon & Jungle Jim as part of the Ultimate Alex Raymond Collection. The Definitive Flash Gordon & Jungle Jim will present every Sunday by Raymond from both classic strips together for the first time, in the oversized 12” x 16” champagne edition format. The artist’s post-war modernist detective series, Rip Kirby, is currently being collected.

Eisner Award-winner Dean Mullaney is editing and designing the deluxe editions. “Although Flash Gordon has been previously reprinted, this—finally—is the first meticulously remastered and restored edition that prints the strip in a large size and in Raymond’s original format that includes the Jungle Jim topper. We believe this will be the definitive edition for the ages.”

Created by Raymond in 1934, Flash Gordon is arguably the most famous science fiction comic strip of all time. It follows adventures of the title character and his companions—Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov—as they leave Earth to discover the source of meteors that are threatening the planet, and gets waylaid on the planet Mongo, where they battle the evil Ming the Merciless. The three Earthlings encounter one strange race after another, from the water-breathing Shark-Men of the Undersea Kingdom, to the winged Hawkmen, to the ferocious Tusk-Men.

All the while, Flash finds himself in the arms of one  beautiful woman after another—much to Dale Arden’s chagrin.

Jungle Jim was created as a strip topper for Flash Gordon, and followed the life of Jim Bradley, who fought pirates, slave traders, and assorted villains in the exotic Southeast Asia of the 1930s. This neglected Raymond classic also features Jim’s native cohort Kolu and femme fatale Lille DeVrille.
Hardcover, 176 pages, 12” x 16”,
$75.00

THE DEFINITIVE FLASH GORDON AND JUNGLE JIM  is solicited in the July PREVIEWS (Available June 29th).
The Diamond Item Code is JUL110384.

Pulp Art: The Robert Lesser Collection - June 2, 2011 to July 30, 2011!
With its images of violence, racism, sex and crime, Pulp Art was deemed unsuitable for display and destroyed.  The Museum features 90 works salvaged by Robert Lesser, on loan from the New Britain Museum of American Art.

Robert Lesser began collecting pulp paintings, comic books, and comic-character toys in the 1950s. As a student at the University of Chicago, Lesser’s literature studies combined with his fascination with popular culture kindled his interest in studying and collecting pulp art and comic memorabilia.

In 1975 he wrote A Celebration of Comic Art and Memorabilia, an informational collectors guide; in 1997 he published Pulp Art: Original Cover Paintings for the Great American Pulp Magazines, a full-color collection of pulp paintings and history that includes expert interpretation.

Almost a full year before his first appearance in the pulps, The Shadow debuted as the mysterious narrator
of The Detective Story Hour, a CBS radio program sponsored by Street & Smith.
On Friday evening, July 29th, popular culture historian Martin Grams
will contribute to PulpFest’’s salute to the 80th anniversary of the first hero pulp by presenting
a fascinating slide show concerning the radio program that inspired the pulp magazine.

Join David Saunders on Friday, July 29th at 8 PM in the PulpFest programming room
for "Wild American Pulp Artists," a presentation on illustrators Emery Clarke, Robert Harris, and
Milton Luros, all of them born 100 years ago in 1911.
All three artists drew black and white interior art and painted front covers for a variety of magazines.

The son of Norman Saunders, David is an accomplished artist himself.
Additionally, he is probably the leading expert on pulp magazine art, having written
and spoken extensively on the subject.

PulpFest Celebrates 100 Years of Talbot Mundy

When it comes to adventure fiction, one of its greatest practitioners was Talbot Mundy,
born William Lancaster Gribbon in 1879.
He began writing in his early thirties, following years of adventuring in India, Africa, and other parts of the world.
Or so the story goes; much of his early life was romanticized over the years, largely by the author himself.

This summer, PulpFest will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Talbot Mundy’s first appearance in print
with a showing of THE BLACK WATCH, a film adaptation of Mundy’s “King of the Khyber Rifles,”
the author's best known work.

Radio Archives: The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1
Now available!
Ten Exciting Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
In the annals of detective fiction, there are many investigators who could lay claim to legendary status. But, for many, the most famous, the most unique, and the most emulated would be the pipe smoking, violin playing, and deer-stalker clad gentleman known as Sherlock Holmes.

Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes and his faithful friend and companion Doctor Watson have been a significant part of popular culture ever since their adventures first appeared in the Strand Magazine in 1887. In the years that have followed, Holmes and Watson have made their way to the stage, the movies, television, and even graphic novels - but, for fans of classic radio, "The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" remains among the best interpretations of these two unforgettable characters and their often baffling cases.

The two actors most associated with the roles during radio's Golden Age were, of course, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. But Rathbone's departure from the series in 1946 resulted in another actor taking on the part: Tom Conway, the suave and handsome leading man who had recently been seen as The Falcon in the popular RKO movie series. Though long-time fans were understandably dubious of the change, Conway's talents fit the role like a glove and he, along with Nigel Bruce, continued to broadcast the series from Hollywood for another successful season.

In "The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1",
RadioArchives.com brings you ten exciting and fully restored episodes from this little-known chapter in the life of the World's Greatest Consulting Detective, just as originally aired in 1946 and starring Tom Conway and Nigel Bruce. Priced at just $14.98 for the five audio CD set, or $9.98 for the digital download, this collection also features original cover art by Timothy Lantz. Visit RadioArchives.com and add Sherlock Holmes to your personal library of mystery favorites right away!

(Note for long-time customers: this 5-hour collection is a repackaged re-release of the first half of a 10-CD set which we previously offered in our catalog. In addition to new cover art, all of the shows in this collection have been newly restored from the original masters to ensure outstanding audio fidelity.)

Altus Press - Coming in July!
Announcing All-New Doc Savage Novels!

THE ALL-NEW WILD ADVENTURES OF DOC SAVAGE:
THE DESERT DEMONS
by Will Murray
& Lester Dent writing as Kenneth Robeson

BOSTON, MA—JUNE 14, 2011: Altus Press is excited to announce the launch of The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage, the first in a new series of blockbuster novels starring the legendary pulp superhero in nearly 20 years.

Written by prolific pulp writer Will Murray, who has won acclaim for his unequalled ten-year tenure ghostwriting Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir’s Destroyer action-adventure series, The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage is a continuation of the well-received Doc novels Murray wrote for Bantam Books back in the 1990s, along with the late Lester Dent. The posthumous collaborations will be published under time-honored byline, Kenneth Robeson.

“These new novels are kicked-up, over-the-top exploits of the Man of Bronze, pitting him against forces and foes never before encountered,” promises Murray. “This is not some comic book scripter’s concept of Doc Savage. It’s the real deal.”

Fully authorized by Condé Nast, trademark holder of Doc Savage and based upon unpublished outlines and manuscripts originally written by Lester Dent, the originating writer of the seminal Street & Smith superman, and licensed from the Heirs of Norma Dent, The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage begins with a searing story set in the summer of 1936, The Desert Demons!

“I’ve always had an uncanny knack of writing novels that are more topical when published than when I wrote them,” Murray revealed. “Witness Nick Fury; Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D: Empyre. Published in 2000, it reads like a blueprint for the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., right down to the use of passenger aircraft piloted by terrorists to decimate U.S. cities.

“In The Desert Demons, a rash of unexplainable tornado-like outbreaks wreak havoc in California, calling Doc Savage and his men into action. And what action! Men and machinery are swallowed up by the scarlet cyclones, never to be seen again. Some chapters read like news reports of the Spring of 2011. Let’s hope we have a happy ending in real life! The entire Doc Savage cast is back for this reintroductory episode, including fan-favorite Patricia Savage.”

Murray also reunites with his other Doc Savage collaborator, award-winning artist and sculptor Joe DeVito, who will paint the covers from never-seen photographs of model Steve Holland, who posed for the best-selling James Bama covers as the living embodiment of the Man of Bronze. These vintage photos were donated to the project by Mr. Bama.

DeVito notes, “Working with Doc Savage again might best be described as revisiting old friends: both figuratively and literally. Collaborating with Will Murray, working from classic photos of the late Steve Holland provided by Jim Bama to illustrate the first super hero of them all... I guess I can also describe it as FUN!”

The Desert Demons will be released in July, followed by a second wild exploit, Horror In Gold, by late summer. Seven new novels are planned. Murray promises the familiar characters in their rightful time period, but with a definite edge to them.

“Since I wrote my last Bantam Books Doc,” Murray commented, “a lot of writers have taken a swing at the bronze man, and struck out. It was painful to watch. So Lester Dent and I have come out of semi-retirement to show everyone how Doc Savage is done. With the recent release of Python Isle, the first of my original seven Doc novels to be released as audiobooks by RadioArchives.com, I’m proclaiming this the Summer of Doc Savage. Doc is back. For real this time.”

The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage will be released
in a variety of formats:
  • 6”x9” trade paperbacks which will be available to bookstores and comic shops everywhere, as well as to individual purchasers through the official Wild Adventures of Doc Savage website, www.adventuresinbronze.com
  • 6”x9”deluxe hardcovers which will contain an illustrated Afterword detailing the background creation of each novel, as well as bonus articles and biographies by Will Murray and others—available in this edition only. These will also include signed bookplates autographed by Will Murray, artist Joe DeVito, and “Lester Dent” (in facsimile).
  • e-book formats available for all the most popular e-readers: Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Apple’s iBookstore (for the iPad and iPhone).

Seven new Doc Savage exploits are planned.
THE DESERT DEMONS will be followed by HORROR IN GOLD and THE INFERNAL BUDDAH.
HORROR IN GOLD will be out before the end of the year!

All will be based on Lester Dent material never before seen.

DAMBALLA
Making Pulp History!

From the heart of Africa to the streets of Harlem, a new hero is born sworn to support and protect Americans of all races and creeds; he is Damballa and he strikes from the shadows.  When the reigning black heavy weight boxing champion of the world agrees to defend his crown against a German fighter representing Hitler’s Nazis regime, the ring becomes the stage for a greater political contest.  The Nazis’ agenda is to humble the American champion and prove the superiority of their pure-blood Aryan heritage.  To achieve this end, they employ an unscrupulous scientist capable of transforming their warrior into a superhuman killing machine.

Can the mysterious Damballa unravel their insidious plot before it is too late to save a brave and noble man?
Airship 27 Productions and Cornerstone Book Publishers are proud to introduce pulpdom’s first ever 1930s African-American pulp hero as created by the acclaimed author, Charles Saunders.

“Racism and sexism were a few of the ugly aspects of the pulps we’d all like to forget,” Editor Ron Fortier comments.  “Minority groups based on race, sex and religion were ostracized and either ignored completely or denigrated in their outlandish portrayals.  Since its creation,
Airship 27 Productions has made it a goal to address these wrongs and help correct them within the context of providing top-notch action fiction to our readers.  DAMBALLA is a major step in that direction and we are truly excited about its release.”

Praise for DAMBALLA and writer Charles Saunders has already begun.  “Having revolutionized the genre of epic fantasy with the creation of Imaro, a black warrior easily equal to such classic characters as Tarzan and Conan, Charles Saunders has done it again.  This time he has created DAMBALLA, a true hero in every sense of the word. Battling racism and evil in the 1930’s, DAMBALLA is no pale imitation of The Shadow or The Avenger.  In fact, after reading this excellent book, I think that they would be proud to consider him a brother in the ceaseless war against crime and injustice.”   Derrick Ferguson – “Dillon and the Voice of Odin”

DAMBALLA by Charles Saunders features a cover by Charles Fetherolf and interior illustrations by Clayton Hinkle, with book design by award-winning artist Rob Davis.

Battered Silicon Dispatch Box - Coming soon!

Another Lost Treasure that is on the verge on going to press is The Compleat Adventures of the Suicide Squad. These are the escapades of 3 American gentleman, a blond, a red-head and a dark haired fellows who go through life before and during the Second World War rescuing blond ladies, usually in a red dress from impossible situations from dastardly villains. This is not enduring literature for the ages, but it was a great escapist literature for our grandfathers. The Boche don’t fare very well, and there’s a great poster of the Squad defacing a propaganda poster of Adolf Hitler. The Japanes fare less well, with Oriental thugs being decimated en masse, with never a scratch nor injury to the members of the Squad. There are a total of 23 stories, almost all appearing in Ace G-Man Stories.  There are also a great batch of covers to illustrate the Dustjacket, and the internal illustrations are full of action. The project will go to press, just as soon as Robert Weinberg completes his introduction, and with a bit of publisher’s luck, it will be ready for Pulpfest in Columbia, Ohio at the end of July!

Haffner Press - Early Summer Update!
It's been a little over two months since our last update, so here's a new broadside to bring things up to date.
We're still chomping at the bit to announce some M-A-J-O-R news, but we're still pulling all the details together.
Hopefully we'll have something to share by the end of June.

On to the news!
1)  Success at Windy City - The 11th Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention was held the weekend of April 15th in Lombard, IL and it was HP's best year ever for sales.  Organizers Doug Ellis and John Gunnison and their cadre of friends and family members did an outstanding job organizing and running the event.  We scored a larger-than-expected amount of pulps with tales by Henry Kuttner for future projects - hooray! We even had to sneak away for 8 hours in the middle of the night to the Secret Moon Base to get more inventory (we said it was our best year for sales). Really looking forward to next year: http://windycitypulpandpaper.com/

2)  Sales of New Titles - Hot on the heels of THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF THE JACK WILLIAMSON LECTURESHIP and AT THE HUMAN LIMIT, THE COLLECTED STORIES OF JACK WILLIAMSON, VOLUME EIGHT, we also used Windy City Pulp and Paper to debut THE COLLECTED CAPTAIN FUTURE, VOLUME TWO and THE UNIVERSE WRECKERS, THE COLLECTED EDMOND HAMILTON, VOLUME THREE.  I'm especially proud of THE UNIVERSE WRECKERS: it contains two un-reprinted "novels," the three-part serial "The Universe Wreckers" from Amazing Stories, 1930 and "Cities in the Air" from Air Wonder Stories.  "Cities in the Air is a completely insane drama of *actual* cities (Berlin, London, New York, etc.) flying across the Atlantic to do battle In. The. Air.  Did I mention that it was insane?

3)  With the new releases come the opportunities for reviews, and Stefan Dziemianowicz opines on TERROR IN THE HOUSE: THE EARLY KUTTNER, VOLUME ONE from the May 2011 issue of LOCUS magazine. Online copy here: http://tinyurl.com/3dsqsl7

4)  Speaking of Kuttner, Dave Truesdale at Tangent Online shares the radio adaptation of Kuttner & Moore's "Housing Problem" (originally published in Charm magazine, Oct, 1944) from the June 16, 1957 broadcast of the CBS Radio Workshop.  Listen here: http://tinyurl.com/5tp2olk

5)  Howard Andrew Jones (Managing Editor of Black Gate magazine and author of THE DESERT OF SOULS - get it now!) wrote the June 14th "Three Books" entry for NPR Online.  Leigh Brackett, Manly Wade Wellman, and Robert E. Howard all get some love here: http://tinyurl.com/3qy5xp2

6)  If you're on Facebook, check out the new FB page for SHANNACH THE LAST: FAREWELL TO MARS by Leigh Brackett: http://tinyurl.com/6gavv7p  SHANNACH is nearly off to the printer, and we're trying to have copies available at Pulpfest at the end of July.  But in the lead-up to the release of SHANNACH, we'll be periodically posting all manner of trivia, info, minutiae, etc. to the SHANNACH THE LAST Facebook page.  One entry is up already, and dozens more to follow.

7)  Speaking of Pulpfest, we're hard at work on our presentation celebrating the Centennial of C.L. Moore.  If you've seen HP's previous presentations on Jack Williamson, Edmond Hamilton, and Leigh Brackett, you know that you are guaranteed to learn something new, encounter obscure and rare items, and a few laughs along the way.

That's all for now, fellow astrogators. Our next update will feature feedback on THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF THE WILLIAMSON LECTURESHIP (about 20 autographed copies remain), an update on the Leigh Brackett biography, and maybe (just maybe) we'll finally be able to spring that M-A-J-O-R announcement for you. As always . . .

Keep Watching the Skies!

The Howard Collector
A New Issue of Glenn Lord’s Legendary Fanzine is now available!

Here is a special announcement from Paul Herman on a fantastic surprise
to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Howard Collector:

That’s right, after 28 years of quiet, The Howard Collector, the first and greatest REH journal, has returned. Started by Glenn Lord in 1961, THC served as a venue for REH studies, and set the standard for REH periodicals. Collecting rare and previously unpublished REH stories, poems and letters, along with book reviews, and interesting historical information from REH’s friends and associates, THC was uniquely situated to provide the best of everything. Glenn acquired the famed Trunk of lost materials, and he served as the literary agent for the REH heirs for more than 30 years. Glenn also tracked down and visited with several of REH’s friends, and accordingly gaining access to even more material. And finally, Glenn is the kind of person who crafts a book with class, subtlety and care, to create a book without silly flash, just great meat on them bones.

THC ran for 18 issues, ending in 1973, as Glenn got too busy with the business of REH to deal with cranking out a fanzine. Those original 18 issues are now highly collectible, and contain all sorts of rare and interesting REH works and discussion. Go check them out on eBay, sometime, and see the prices these fetch.

Glenn has been retired from the world of REH for more than a decade now. But Dennis McHaney had the idea of seeing if Glenn would be interested in doing another issue in his spare time. A group of us chatted with Glenn, and he decided to do it. With the kind permission of Paradox, and the efforts of a few friends (including Rob Roehm), the latest issue is now available. A lot of research and work went into trying to properly match fonts, styles, paper, etc. Contents include an introduction by Glenn Lord, a previously unpublished REH poem, a previously unpublished REH drawing, a previously unpublished Breck Elkins fragment, and the infamous first draft of “Black Canaan,” the one that REH said the editors “cut the guts out of.” The guts are back in. And finally, some book reviews by the great Fred Blosser.

The print run is limited to 200 copies total. The book is a fat 52 pages, and sells for $20. As Glenn has better things to do, I’m handling the shipping. Shipping in the US is $3 First Class, $6 Priority. Insurance is $2. For non-US destinations, please contact me.

Checks or money orders can be sent to:
Paul Herman
P.O. Box 250526
Plano, TX 75025

or to pay via PayPal, click here for the e-mail address.

There will be another Howard Collector, #20, in the near future.
Rob Roehm and Glenn Lord have dug up so many new treasures that there was enough for 2 volumes.

James Rollins: THE DEVIL COLONY (Sigma Force Novel)
Arriving in book stores June 21st!
Could the founding of America be based on a fundamental lie, one coded in secrets that stretch back to before the birth of Christ, to a mystery buried in the prehistoric past? The truth lies hidden within the ruins of a cursed lost colony of the Americas. A place known only as: THE DEVIL COLONY. During a sweat lodge ceremony in an Indian cave in the Rocky Mountains, a horrible massacre ensues. Bodies are found blistered and burned and purposefully positioned to form two shapes: a five-pointed star and a sickle-shaped moon. One man recognizes the warning behind the gruesome murders: Painter Crowe, director of Sigma. He has seen these two symbols before and knows the deaths were a personal threat - one of the dead is his beloved cousin. From the frozen volcanic peaks of Iceland to the blistering deserts of the American Southwest, from the tombs of dead presidents to the gold vaults of Fort Knox, Painter Crowe joins forces with Commander Grayson Pierce and an unlikely ally - a woman who may have had a hand in the murders - to penetrate the shadowy heart of a dark cabal that has been manipulating American history since the founding of the thirteen colonies. But can he discover the truth - one that could topple governments - before it destroys all he holds dear? Including the woman he loves.

On Friday evening, July 29th, popular culture historian Martin Grams will launch
PulpFest’s salute to the 80th anniversary of the first hero pulp by
presenting a fascinating slide show concerning the radio program that inspired the pulp magazine.

Pooling together twelve years of independent research,
Martin will offer a fascinating view of the Shadow of the air waves and explain how
The Shadow became one of the most recognized and well known radio programs of all time.

His name is synonymous with classic detective fiction. Whether on the silver screen or on the air, Philip Marlowe personifies everything we know and love about the gumshoes of the 1940s: the snap brim fedora, the seedy office, the mean streets of Los Angeles, and a hard working detective just trying to make an honest living without getting punched or shot down in cold blood.

For film buffs, it's a memorable image: Harry Lime - criminal, thief, and black market racketeer – has been killed by a runaway car in the ravaged streets of postwar Vienna. But suddenly, out of the darkness of a moonlit night, a stray spotlight happens upon a doorway – and there he is: Harry Lime, in the flesh, alive…and smiling.

"The Third Man" is a film noir classic, combining a stellar cast, an intriguing story, and images of a once glamorous European city damaged by war, greed, and intrigue. Though brief, Orson Welles performance as Harry Lime remains one of the most memorable characterizations in his long and varied career. Luckily, for fans of audio entertainment, Welles revisited his role in "The Lives of Harry Lime", a radio series that recounted the adventures of this memorable scoundrel in a series of tongue in cheek adventures that remain some of the best and most imaginative programs ever produced for radio.

In "The Lives of Harry Lime, Volume 3", RadioArchives.com brings you ten more light-hearted and colorful tales of crime and criminals starring the legendary Orson Welles. Available as a five-CD audio collection for just $14.98 or a five-hour digital download for just $9.98, these fascinating programs have been transferred directly from original transcriptions and fully restored for sparkling audio fidelity. Renaissance E Books Futures Past Editions - Now available!
First three ebooks in what will eventually be a reprinting of all Ki-Gor adventures from JUNGLE TALES have been released by Futures-Past Editions under the series title of "The Ki-Gor Collection." All volumes in this ebook series will sell for $0.99. The three titles currently available are Ki-Gor, King of the Jungle, The Mad Monster of Mu-Ungu, and Lair of the Beast. Each book features an introduction about the series, character and story.

The most successful of the Tarzan imitations that thrived in the pulp magazines, Ki-Gor appeared bi-monthly in a series of "complete book-lengthnovels," in the pages of JungleTales, appearing in some60 adventures between 1939 and 1954.  The novels werepublished under the pseudonym John Peter Drummond, and over the years were chronicled by such pulp stalwarts as John Murray Reynolds, Robert Turner, Wilbur Scott Peacock, Jerome Bixby and Stanley Mullen.

All the books in The Ki-Gor Collection are available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other ebook stores at $0.99 each.

Renaissance E Books - Now available!

In this first of his adventures, Ki-Gor, a Rousseauian primitive who has been living alone in the jungles of Africa since he was a young boy, crosses the path of a beautiful young woman whose skin is also curiously pale like his own. Slowly they learn to communicate and fall in love as they are menaced by slavers, warrior tribes and the deadliest of jungle beasts. The woman, Helene, who falls in love with the likable primitive, is an unusually strong figure in her own right for a pulp magazine heroine of the time. At the conclusion of the story, they set off with their elephant, Marmo, for who knows what future adventures.

"Ki-Gor was the best and most popular of Tarzan's rivals," -pulp expert Forrest J. Ackerman. In this adventure, Ki-Gor takes on one of the oldest of all human evils, human trafficking, a scourge which has never died out even to this day.  As the original magazine blurb puts it: "Ki-Gor, white lord of the jungle, had sworn an oath.  Death to ibn Daoud, dealer in men! Death to the Arab slave-dealer who held beautiful Helene captive in his fortress reared on human bones and human souls!" It is logical that he should encounter it, for Africa has always been a prime target for those who would trap and enslave others.  A must for fans of Tarzan and other jungle heroes. As an added treat, this electronic edition reprints the original magazine blurb for the story. With an original Introduction discussing the character, his creators, and the story itself. Plus a complete list of all the Ki-Gor novels from Jungle Stories. With the original pulp magzine cover illustration.

In this adventure, Ki-Gor, the jungle king of the pulps is lured into a trap by a man who saves Helene's life.  Drugged and hypnotized, by a power mad despot, Ki-Gor unwittingly leads Helene, along with his two closest friends, the Masai warrior Tembu George and N'Geeso chief of the pigmies, and their tribes, into the hands of a fiend.  A helpless pawn in a madman's scheme, Ki-Gor's only hope is a Zulu wizard (fans of H. Rider Haggard will recognize the inspiration for this character) whose aid the jungle lord has already spurned. As an added treat, this electronic edition reprints the original magazine blurb for the story. With an original Introduction discussing the character, his creators, and the story itself. Plus a complete list of all the Ki-Gor novels from Jungle Stories. With the original pulp magzine cover illustration.

Secret Agent X was one of the most lurid of pulp magazines, as these three novels reprinted from its pages prove. The series was unique in another respect. As a Wikipedia entry notes: "In the stories, the true identity of Secret Agent X is never revealed. He is a master of disguise, known as "the man of a thousand faces", who adopts several different identities in each story. Although he is a dedicated crime-fighter working undercover for the U.S. government, this is unknown to the police who consider him an outlaw. His true role is known only to newspaper reporter Betty Dale and his mysterious Washington controller, K-9." Like other pulp hero novels, the Secret Agent X stories are filled with nonstop action, bizarre villains, fiendish weapons, and diabolical plots, as these book-length reprints show. If you love the Shadow, the Spider and Doc Savage, you will love Secret Agent X.

World Beyond Pluto by C. H. Thames
World Beyond Pluto, the fourth and final volume of the complete ebook reprinting of the celebrated Johnny Mayhem adventures, which appeared in Amazing Stories in the mid-1950s, has just been released for sale at Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com and other ebook stores. The ebook contains the last three stories about Johnny Mayhem - A Coward Named Mayhem, Mayhem Enslaved, and World Beyond Pluto.- written under the house name C. H. Thames, which some have attributed to the suspense writer legally named Stephen Marlow (who was born Milton Lesser, under which name he was active in fandom, especially the letter columns of Planet Stories, during the early 1950s).

Mayhem, whose body was reconstructed by aliens after a crash landing on their planet is a cosmic trouble-shooter for the Galactic Federation. Known as "the Man Who Saved the Universe," he pays a terrible price for the special power he receives. For, while Mayhem's mind can move from body to body with the proper scientific equipment, he can inhabit each body for only 30 days, and then must return to a Federation for transmission into a new one, or he and the body he is inhabiting will die. Johnny's misssion: Face the greatgest dangers that threaten humanity and triumph over them - or perish.

The eleven Johnny Mayhem novelettes have been published by Futures-Past Editions in four ebooks: 1. The Man who Saved the Universe, 2. This Planet is Mine, 3. Get Out of My World, and World Beyond Pluto. The first three are $0.99 each. And the final volume is $1.99.

Robert E. Howard - News and Announcements!
Robert E. Howard Days may be over for 2011, but there were some interesting announcements made.
Thanks to Ed Chaczyk and Damon Sasser for the information below!

Mr.Malmberg (Paradox Entertainment) has emphatically stated that the Conan movie (out Aug 19) will definitely be R rated. Marcus Nispel had thrown buckets and buckets of blood at the actors during production. The director's edit comes in at 2 hours and 40 minutes, but is now being trimmed to something around 2 hours with the credits.

Previewed at Howard Days was the "Red Band" trailer. This is the R-rated trailer. Until now, because of how the movie ratings board works, only PG-13 trailers could be shown before PG-13 films. R rated movie trailers could only be shown before R rated movies. And once you say that your movie is R-rated, there's no going back and trying to show any trailer from an R-rated movie before a PG-13 movie. So to get the most advertising bang for the buck, a PG-13 edited trailer was being shown before both PG-13 AND R Rated movies.

Christophe Gans, director of Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill is on board as writer and director for a new Dark Agnes movie. A Kull movie is in the works, as are film adaptations of “Vultures of Wahpeton” and “Pigeons From Hell” – some talk of a Steve Costigan movie as well. Plans are also for a sequel to the Conan movie to premiere in two years. Paradox hopes to keep Momoa busy on another of their films so he doesn’t get tied up making some other movie when the filming begins on the sequel.

A lot of folks have been clamoring for a hardback collection of Jim and Ruth Keegan’s “Two-Gun Bob” comic strips and Dark Horse seems willing to do one once they have 200 strips under their belts – they completed 120, so 80 more to go for the book to come to fruition.

Rob Roehm talked of many books in the works to be published by the REH Foundation.
SPICY ADVENTURES with a cover by the Keegans, will be the next book out from the REH Foundation Press, with a number of other items in the pipeline behind it including a multi-volume “Fight Stories“ collection and a biographical book containing Post Oaks & Sand Roughs, along with some of Howard’s other biographical related material.

Dennis McHaney will have out soon Illustrating Robert E. Howard, featuring interviews and write-ups on the top Howard illustrators, plus a ton of their artwork in full color.

Dennis McHaney, one of this year's Guests of Honor, introduced a new book, "Anniversary: Glenn Lord and the Howard Collector". Dennis edited the book which features many essays and tributes to Glenn Lord and 5 REH stories. It should be available soon.

Robert E. Howard Foundation Press - Now available!
The Robert E. Howard Foundation is proud to announce two new titles
School Days in the Post Oaks and The Collected Letters of Dr. Isaac M. Howard.
These books are available in both hard and soft covers.
Jackets designed by Jim & Ruth Keegan.

School Days in the Post Oaks is an anthology of newspapers articles covering Robert E. Howard’s life and times in the post oak country. The articles were pulled from community papers—Cross Plains Review, Brownwood Bulletin, Dallas Daily News, etc.—and school publications—The Tattler, The Progress, Daniel Baker Collegian, Yellow Jacket. These articles cover a range of activities: from Robert Howard’s graduation from Cross Plains High to his summer graduation from the Howard Payne Commercial School. They describe events that occurred both on campus and off; for example, Howard’s Brownwood High graduation is narrated in detail, even including the text of the commencement speech. Other articles describe what it was like to work for the Yellow Jacket, the overcrowding at BHS, the senior picnic, and more. Along the way, other Howardian personalities receive equal attention: Tevis Clyde Smith, Echla Laxson, Novalyne Price, C. S. Boyles and others.

This heaping helping of Howard’s “time and place” also includes all of Howard’s stories and poems from the above-named publications, including the recently found “Letter of a Chinese Student” and items whose authorship is uncertain. There’s even an index.

Hardbacks are $33 for non-members; members pay $30.
Paperbacks are $20, or $18 for members.

The Collected Letters of Doctor Isaac M. Howard is a lot more than the title implies. It begins with a “Prelude” section which contains letters to Robert E. Howard: items from August Derleth, C. L. Moore, Farnsworth Wright, Otis Kline, and others. Following a handful of newspaper articles describing Robert E. Howard’s death and funeral, Isaac Howard’s letters begin. These are interspersed with responding letters from Wright, Derleth, Kline, and E. Hoffmann Price, as well as other, related letters (in a letter from Kline to Carl Jacobi, it’s easy to see the myth-making of Howard’s suicide beginning). The sections with Isaac Howard’s letters end with a couple of newspaper articles announcing his death and a letter from Alla Ray Kuykendall which describes the doctor’s final moments.

As a post script, E. Hoffmann Price’s articles and letters regarding the Howards are included. Readers can eavesdrop on Price as he describes the contents of Howard’s fabled Trunk to August Derleth, and trace Price’s changing view on Two-Gun as Howard’s fame and popularity surpassed his own.

A “Miscellanea” sections concludes the volume, with a copy of Doctor Howard’s will, the Kline ledger and lists of stories and poems, letters from P. M. Kuykendall and Oscar J. Friend that detail a plan which could have altered the course of Howard publishing, and, finally, subject and title indexes.

This fat hardcover is $35 for non-members, $32 for members.
The paperback is $25 for the public, or $22 for our members.

Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy - Now available!
2012 sees the centennial anniversary of the publication of Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. As part of the run-up to this milestone, Andy Briggs has been writing a new series of Tarzan books, the first of which, Tarzan: the Legacy of Greystoke, is due to be published in June 2011 by Faber & Faber.

Set in modern Africa, Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy follows a re-imagined Tarzan who is edgier, untamed and feral while remaining the iconic hero, raised by apes and protector of the wild. Among the 21st-century difficulties the new Tarzan will face: warring guerrillas, poaching of endangered animals, illegal logging and the decline of the environment. The story's original characters will appear in slightly different form: Jane is a 14-year-old girl accustomed to technology, Robert Canler is a runaway with a mysterious past, and cannibal tribes are replaced by rebel guerrillas.

Synopsis: What lies in the depths of the jungle? Escaping a dark secret, Robbie Canler joins an illegal logging team in the Congo jungle. Now they"re under siege from a sinister force. When the daughter of the camp's boss, Jane Porter, goes missing they assume bloodthirsty rebel soldiers have kidnapped her. Robbie sets out on a rescue mission - unaware he is being watched...Are the rumours of a feral man raised by wild apes true? If so, can the mysterious untamed savage be trusted to help them?

By the time he finds a solution to the crime his life will be irrevocably changed! First of a new mystery series.

Bookman is backed with The Paperback Show Murders by Robert Reginald, (cover art by Robert Maguire) where murders at an LA paperback show form the backdrop for a fun crime read. Both books feature fascinating and fun lore from the world of collectable books. You’ll get a kick out of reading both sides of this new Wildside  “Double”!

Driving Hell’s Highway (Wildside Mystery Double #4, 2011, trade paperback original, $15), He had no past and no future, only the long open road ahead of him. Hard Case Crime - Big re-launch in just 3 months!

Our last new title was Brett Halliday's MURDER IS MY BUSINESS back in August 2010, so we'll have been on hiatus for a bit over a year when our new books hit stores in September. But what a comeback we've got in store! Four books, all brand new, including an original novel by Lawrence Block called GETTING OFF (our first ever hardcover title); a new Quarry novel from Max Allan Collins, QUARRY'S EX; a new novel from Christa Faust, CHOKE HOLD, starring Angel Dare from her Edgar Award-nominated MONEY SHOT; and THE CONSUMMATA, the long-awaited second adventure of the hero of Mickey Spillane's bestselling THE DELTA FACTOR, which was begun by Spillane in the 1960s and finished by Spillane's long-time friend Max Allan Collins some four decades later. You can get a taste of each of these books at our Web site, www.HardCaseCrime.com.

While you're there you can also enjoy a glimpse of our big Spring 2012 title, a never-before-published novel by the late, great Donald E. Westlake.  The book is called THE COMEDY IS FINISHED, and it's going to be our second hardcover ever.  Don wrote it between the late 1970s and early 80s, but never published it because he found himself worrying that its premise -- the kidnaping of a famous television comedian -- was too similar to the movie "The King of Comedy," which Martin Scorsese released around the same time. He shouldn't have worried -- the book and the movie aren't similar at all outside of sharing that basic premise.  It's a hell of a good book and one that very much deserves to be in print, and we're very excited to be bringing it out for the first time, with a fabulous cover by Greg Manchess.

If you would like a Westlake fix sooner than that, we'll be bringing out a trade paperback edition of SOMEBODY OWES ME MONEY at the start of July (you'll see it on the front tables at Barnes & Noble, among other places).  It's our first book ever in the slightly larger trade paperback format, and as much as I like the smaller pocket-sized format we've used in the past, I have to say I love how this particular cover painting looks with a little more room to breathe.  You can pre-order the new edition online already; you can also pre-order THE COMEDY IS FINISHED and all our September/October titles.

Meanwhile, all our old titles should be back in stores at this point, so if there are any holes in your collection you should be able to fill them now.

We're still waiting to hear from our new publisher, Titan Books, about whether or not they'll be able to offer a 'book club'-style subscription service of the sort our old publisher used to offer -- they'd like to, but it's a complicated thing to set up, and the jury's still out.  (As soon as we have a final answer from them, we'll let you know.)  But fortunately there are other ways to get both our old books and our forthcoming titles by mail if you want them that way -- you can find them on Amazon.com, BN.com, and numerous other sites.  Or you can ask your local bookseller to get them for you.  We'd encourage you to support your local brick-and-mortar bookstores if at all possible -- they need your business to stay in business.  But you have a wide range of options, and we're grateful for your support no matter which option you choose.

Finally, note that HAVEN, the TV series inspired by Stephen King's Hard Case Crime title, THE COLORADO KID, returns to SyFy on July 15th.  I'm not penning an episode myself this season but I'm still working on the show as a producer and consulting on all the scripts, and I can tell you we've got some good ones coming.  (Plus a new character, Evidence Ryan, named after my newborn daughter.  Has there ever been a better reason to watch a TV show than that...?)

Hope you enjoy HAVEN if you do check it out; our new books when they start coming; and the rest of what will no doubt be a long, hot summer.

Paizo Publishing: PLANET STORIES
Hunt the Space-Witch! - Now available!

By Robert Silverberg with a new introduction by the author!

Science-fiction legend Robert Silverberg reflects on some of his earliest, least-reprinted tales in this new Planet Stories collection! Between 1956 and 1958, Silverberg contributed dozens of short stories and novellas to the digest pulps, each written in the bombastic, high-adventure style of the original Planet Stories magazine. Since then, those tales have re-appeared only rarely (and sometimes never again) in long out-of-print paperback anthologies. This volume, the first of three to come this year, features seven hard-to-find classic Silverberg novellas:

Slaves of the Star Giants
Spawn of the Deadly Sea
The Flame and the Hammer
Valley Beyond Time
Hunt the Space-Witch!
The Silent Invaders
Spacerogue

Never before collected in a single edition, these stories reveal the early action-packed tales of one of speculative fiction's most important voices!

Paizo Publishing: PLANET STORIES
The Planet Killers - Coming in July!

By Robert Silverberg with a new introduction by the author!

Three classic science fiction novels from Grand Master Robert Silverberg return to print for the first time in more than 40 years! These never-reprinted tales originally appeared in the influential Ace Double novel series, and represent a future multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author bridging the explosive, action-oriented science fiction adventures of the early pulps with more introspective themes of the new wave that swept sci-fi in the 1960s.

In The Planet Killers, the Security Computers of Earth Central determine that the frontier world of Lurion will launch an all-out attack on Earth in 67 years, sending Agent Roy Gardner to the rough-and-tumble planet to ensure that doesn't happen—even if it means blowing Lurion to interstellar dust!

In The Plot Against Earth, Lloyd Catton, humanity's first agent of the Interworld Commission on Crime, must work with skeptical, suspicious alien agents to bust a hypnojewel racket that threatens the whole of the galaxy. Trailing the deadly, mind-sapping gems to the source unveils a multi-planet conspiracy, leaving Catton few allies in his frantic mission to save Earth itself!

In One of Our Asteroids is Missing, independent miner John Storm discovers an impossible asteroid rich with fabulously valuable metals and minerals, only to find his claim stolen, along with all computer records indicating that he had ever existed! Hunted by mining conglomerates and desperate to restore his jackpot find, Storm sets out into space to find his missing rock—only to discover that his find was far more valuable than he could have ever imagined.

Never before reprinted since their original appearances and with a new introduction by the author, these three novels of science fiction adventure blaze back onto the scene, revealing early masterworks of one of the genre's most gifted and celebrated storytellers!

The Chalice of Death - Coming in November!

By Robert Silverberg with a new introduction by the author!

Three complete novels of mystery in space from Grand Master Robert Silverberg explode back into print for the first time in decades in this thrilling new Planet Stories collection! These extremely scarce tales originally appeared in the legendary Ace Double novel series, and represent a future multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author bridging the explosive, action-oriented science fiction adventures of the early pulps with more introspective themes of the new wave that swept sci-fi in the 1960s.

In The Chalice of Death, a human from the far edge of space must track down the legendary planet that birthed his race tens of thousands of years ago. For the legends hold that the long-forgotten Earth holds the Chalice of Life, and the Chalice of Life holds immortality!

In Starhaven, interplanetary fugitive Johnny Mantell flees authorities to the artificial pirate world known as Starhaven, sanctuary for the criminals and misfits of space. There he finds a new home for himself—as well as questions about his past, his future, and his very identity itself!

In Shadow on the Stars, deep space colonist Baird Ewing returns to Earth for the first time in the thousand years since his ancestors first departed, seeking aid against the aliens who seek to destroy his colony. But the weapon he finds upon the ancient Earth can save only one planet, and Ewing must choose between his two home worlds.

Seldom or never reprinted since their original appearances and with a new introduction by the author, these three novels of science fiction adventure blaze back onto the scene, revealing early masterworks of one of the genre’s most gifted and celebrated storytellers!

Pro Se Press: THE ROOK VOLUME SIX - Now available!

Pro Se Press, a leader in New Pulp fiction, is extremely proud to announce the first of many releases penned by Veteran Pulp Author Barry Reese and starring Reese’s best known creation, THE ROOK!  THE ROOK: VOLUME SIX by Reese is now available from Pro Se Press!

Already established as one of the best known heroes of The New Pulp Movement, The Rook takes on his greatest adventures in VOLUME SIX.  Reese ups the ante significantly for Max Davies, millionaire and vision driven vigilante, by setting The Rook against Sun Koh, Prince of Atlantis in the lead story, THE SCORCHED GOD!  A character from German pulps of the 1930s, Sun Koh is essentially the Germanic Doc Savage and comes up against The Rook in order to take his supposed rightful place as ruler of the world.  Assisted by a variety of interesting villains, most notably The Furies, three women, each one representing an Axis nation.  What chance does any mere mortal man have against a near Godlike being and his bevy of deadly beauties?  Fortunately, there is nothing ‘mere’ about The Rook in ‘THE SCORCHED GOD!’

The Rook continues to deliver two fisted justice in two other tales included in VOLUME SIX!  Taking a trip to the Old West like no one ever has, The Rook hopes to help lost souls clear up ‘SINS OF THE PAST’!  And The Rook appears for the first time ever in a story with Reese’s latest and greatest New Pulp hero!  Lazarus Gray, of Pro Se’s SOVEREIGN CITY PROJECT, stands side by side with The Rook as they take on evil and injustice in ‘DARKNESS, SPREADING ITS WINGS OF BLACK’!

This volume also includes an introduction by Pro Se Editor in Chief Tommy Hancock, an interview with the author, and a timeline for The Rook and the various and sundry tales told within that universe!

The book is both a prequel and a sequel to Gaston Leroux's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. In Leroux's novel, the Phantom wasn't the only mysterious personage living under the Paris Opera House. Now the theory has been put into practice.

SHADOWS OF THE OPERA also features the major enemies of Sherlock Holmes, Arsene Lupin and A. J. Raffles.

Age of Aces - Now available!

"The Iron Ace" by William E. Barrett
In the Misty Skies of WWI France, history is written with flaming guns! And Yank airman Hugh McQuillen had smashed his way into those history books as "The Iron Ace."

Assigned as the C.O. of a Royal Flying Corps squadron, and prowling the skies in his deadly war plane adorned with the Laughing Skull, he was a grim and unrelenting instrument of war who killed Germans with such ruthless efficiency that he became known on both sides of the line as "The Assassin." McQuillen believed there was no decent way to bring men to a violent end, so he would not bow to the "chivalry of the air" practiced by his R.F.C. mates and the Germans. This made the Iron Ace a marked man, and his enemies would stop at nothing to bring an end to his savage reign.

Written by William E. Barrett, the nine tales of "The Iron Ace" appeared in Sky Birds magazine from 1933 through 1934. Barrett is best remembered for his novels, The Left Hand of God and The Lillies of the Field. But he was initially a very busy writer for the pulp magazines. And while much of his work was in the air war mags, he also contributed to the western and detective pulps. One of Barrett's most popular characters appeared in a series of stories in Dime Detective. "Needle Mike" was an undercover crime fighter who posed a s a tattoo artist.

"The Iron Ace" is available from Amazon

Black Coat Press - The June releases are now available!

In Albert Bleunard's Ever Smaller (1893), the first modern novel on the theme of the "Shrinking Man," a group of scientists are shrunken down, first to insect-size, to explore an ordinary garden, which becomes as perilous to them as an alien world; then, to microbe-size inside a drop of water and, finally, into a rose bush.

The book also includes The Reluctant Spiritualist, an 1889 novella about a mysterious and seemingly blank canvas which when photographed reveal the face of a man.

"Ever Smaller is a significant landmark in the history of scientific romance. Not only does it go where no writer had gone before, in extending its thought-experiments beyond those of Jean-Henri Fabre and S. Henry Berthoud, it does so boldly." Brian Stableford.

In the 40 stories assembled in this collection, originally published in 1901, journalist Paul Vibert explores such ground-breaking concepts as the artificial insemination of elephants with the seed of prehistoric mastodons found preserved in ice, the artificial production of microbe-sized humans, the existence of an underwater world inhabited by Ancient Jews, communication with Mars and other worlds via light signals, the power to look into the past, the electrical nature of the soul, the strange chemical lifeforms of the future, artificial Metempsychosis and the conquest of space.

Paul Vibert (1861-1918) made several significant contributions to the early development of French speculative fiction at the end of the 19th century. Published mostly in newspapers, his works have only recently been rediscovered, and deserve much recognition alongside those of Alphonse Allais, Charles Cros, Alfred Jarry and Albert Robida.

Black Dog Books - Coming soon!

Editor Richard Martinsen was the primary supporter of Lester Dent in the infancy of his writing career. Under promises from Martinsen of regular assignments, in the midst of the Great Depression, Dent quit his day job and moved halfway across the United States to New York City to undertake writing a novel a month for the Dell line of pulp magazines.

Fists of Fury collects the two-fisted adventures of Curt Flagg from the pages of the extremely rare Scotland Yard magazine. Curt Flagg is in many ways a prototype for the characters and situations that Dent became famous for a few years later when penning the escapes of Doc Savage.

With an introduction by historian Will Murray, this book of previously uncollected material, running more than 100,000 words, is a welcomed addition for the legion of fans of Lester Dent!

Bonus: Appendices include submission notes and records from Dent's notebooks.

Included are the following novels:
Wildcat
Doom Ship
One Billion—Gold!
Sign of the Adder introduction by Will Murray
Sign of the Adder

Story idea for "The Osage Ogre" (aka "Wildcat')
Outline for "The Osage Ogre" (aka "Wildcat')

The Man Who Found Zero
Edited by Gene Christie

Following in the literary footsteps of The Space Annihilator: Early Science Fiction from The Argosy, 1896-1910, Gene Christie has unearthed another collection of the imaginative, science-fictional stories your great-grandparents enjoyed long before the term "science fiction" was coined.

Decades before the advent of Weird Tales in 1923 and Amazing Stories in 1926, weird fantasy and science fiction was appearing regularly in the pages of popular American publications, included as a part of the routine mix of mysteries, adventures, romances, humor, Westerns and other types of stories.

These 24 uncut gems of the fantastic have been rescued from the chaff of their long-forgotten companion stories in crumbling old magazines, and are now available for the first time in three generations!

Trade paperback / 168 pp. / $16.95 US

The Doom of the Gods by Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur

The Northmen were a favorite fictional theme for Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur. Intimately familiar with the Viking sagas (having translated "The Prose Edda: Tales From Norse Mythology" by Snorri Sturluson),  from his earliest story, "In the Grip of the Minotaur" (co-written with Farnham Bishop) to his last, "He Rules Who Can," Brodeur clove a path of bloody destruction through the historical fiction field.

The Doom of the Gods reprints for the first time three of Brodeur's Viking tales from Adventure—the title novel plus two long novelettes: "Vengeance" and "The Honor of a King." Drawing on sources such as the Volsunga Saga and "Beowulf," and ranging in time from the third to the tenth centuries A.D., these stories are as gritty and action-packed as the Viking era they portray.

Included are:
The Doom of the Gods
Vengeance
The Honor of a King

The Altar of the Legion
by
Farnham Bishop and Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur

This is a tale of the lost land of Lyonesse—that last far-flung colony of Rome in Britain—whose marble palaces and beautiful terraces, tradition says, once shone in the sunlight at the very end of Cornwall and now lie buried fathoms deep under the waters that roll between Land's End and the Scilly Isles. Here dwelt the last "Romans"—half Romans, half Britains—who gloried in the power and grandeur of the great Roman Empire, and joined with their savage Welsh and Irish and Celtic neighbors in repulsing the marauding Saxon heathen who poured down upon the coast of Britain to seize the land and enslave the peoples.

To Bellerium, the great city of Legionis Asa comes as envoy Meriaduc, son of King Owain of Wales, to ask for troops. Drusus, the Prefect, for the honor of Rome, goes forth with an inadequate following to join the harassed Britons, to strive to outwit and outfight the Saxon.

Originally serialized in Adventure, The Altar of the Legion is a stirring story of daring and historical adventure, telling of events that could have given rise to the legends of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

THE SHARK STRIKES: The Collected Adventures of Shark Gotch
by Albert Richard Wetjen
Edited and with an introduction by Doug Ellis.
The terror of the South Seas lives again!

Few heroes of fiction are like Shark Gotch: cruel, often a killer by nature, ruthless; yet absolutely an honest man loyal to his creed that would got to any length to avenge a wrong done to himself or his friends. Shark Gotch's name struck terror from Sydney to Singapore. Known as the fastest man with a gun, strong men thought it wise to steer clear of Gotch and his wrath.

One of the most thrilling characters to emerge from the action-adventure magazines, the volume assembles more than two dozen stories, collected from the pages of Danger Trail, Action Stories and other sources.

Bonus: included are non-fiction articles, photographs and additional background material by and about Albert Richard Wetjen.

Paths of Fire by Albert Richard Wetjen

Leaving home for the sea at age fourteen, Albert Richard Wetjen (1900-1948), was shipwrecked twice before his sixteenth birthday. On the later occasion he survived five weeks on an island before being rescued.

Once back to sea, to pass the time between ports, Wetjen began to read. Less than impressed by some of the fiction he read, which lacked believability, he knew he could tell a better story himself by simply drawing upon his working knowledge of ships and the tribulations of men at sea.

By age twenty-two, only a few years after his first attempts at composing fiction, Dick Wetjen was a regular contributor to the Saturday Evening Post and Collier's, simultaneously selling stories to the pulp magazines Action Stories, Adventure, Short Stories and Everybody's.

Paths of Fire assembles eight of the author's riveting tales of adventure.

Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 20-23, 2011!
As it has for the past 35 years, the Friends of Old Time Radio will meet at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, N.J., on the third weekend in October, this year the 20th-23rd, to gather stars and fans to celebrate dramatic radio.  The big difference this year is that it will be our final convention and we want to go out with the biggest, best convention we've had in years.

No expense will be spared to bring in as many of the living radio acting veterans we can find.  We have great historians, directors, authors and actors clamoring to put on their very best programs - and we hope that the annual excuse we hear from so many "I don't have time, I'll get there one of these years" just won't apply.

So far, we know that Arthur Anderson, veteran of The Mercury Theater, 29 years as the spokes-leprechaun for Lucky Charms, and author of the definitive history of radio program "Let's Pretend," will direct an episode of this series as his personal sign-off of more than 20 years attending our events.  Outstanding actors such as Rosemary Rice of Archie on the radio and I Remember Mama on TV, Tommy Cook of Red Ryder, Nan Warren of Let's Pretend, Richard Herd of Theater 5 and (later) Seinfeld, Will Hutchins of Sugarfoot, legendary X-1 writer George Lefferts, actor/d.j. Michael C. Gwynne, the son of big band leader Frankie Kaye, are already confirmed with many more to come.

The convention will as always feature live recreations of classic shows, panel discussions with the stars, music, the biggest nostalgia dealer rooms around, selling movies, TV, hundreds of thousands of hours of old time radio recordings and more, and unique opportunities to directly interact with the stars and ask about their amazing careers.  No one is behind a velvet rope charging for autographs at Friends of Old Time Radio.  The stars are having just as much fun as you are, if not more.

The program is split between a day session that lasts from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and features many of the panels and discussions, as well as live recreations.  The evening program includes a buffet dinner followed by two recreations as well as awards to the special guests and raffles and the like.  We try to make the dinner recreations our most star-studded, exciting theater.  The guests are distributed across the tables at dinner, so you will always have at least one celebrity at your table.  Dinner rates are inclusive of the day rates.  We haven't set final pricing yet but in recent years, the day admission has been $25 ($20 in advance) and dinners ranged from $60 - $75 or so depending on the day, which packages available for people staying for all four days.

We're also looking for any old time radio actors or other professionals such as writers, sound effects specialists, producers, casting agents, etc., who are interested in attending to contact us.

Gabriel Hunt: HUNT AMONG THE KILLERS OF MEN
Trade paperback edition arriving in books stores June 6th!

The last Gabriel Hunt adventure to hit book stores in our original mass-market paperback format (those little paperbacks that fit in your jacket pocket), HUNT AMONG THE KILLERS OF MEN, is about to become the first ever to be released in the larger 'prestige' trade paperback format, on June 6th.

Then in August...our sixth and final (for now) title, HUNT THROUGH NAPOLEON'S WEB, co-authored by the talented and charming Raymond Benson, will finally see print for the first time, also in trade paperback format.  You can already pre-order it on Amazon.com and from other fine retailers.

And the plan is for the first four Hunt adventures to follow in subsequent months, so that before long you'll be able to have a full set in uniform editions.

The PulpFest Organizing Committee is pleased to announce that the nomination process
for the 2011 Munsey Award has been a tremendous success.
Twenty-five people were nominated by pulp fans for this year’s award.

The final nominee list has been pared down to the following eleven individuals whose names
will be forwarded to a committee made up of all the living Lamont and Munsey Award winners
who will select the person to receive the 2011 Munsey:
William Contento, Win Scott Eckert, Stephen Haffner, Steve Miller, Matt Moring, Laurie Powers,
Garyn Roberts, Phil Stephensen-Payne, Anthony Tollin, George Vanderburgh, and Dan Zimmer.

You’ll find further details about each nominee on the 2011 nominees page of our website.

FarmerCon Coming to PulpFest

PulpFest 2011 is pleased to announce that FarmerCon VI will be held concurrently at our convention.
An annual gathering for fans of Grand Master of Science Fiction Philip José Farmer,
FarmerCon is rooted in Peoria, Illinois, the late author’s home town.

It all started soon after Phil had won the Grand Master award at the 2001 Nebula Awards ceremony.
To honor the event, the Peoria Public Library staged a Living Legend Reception for the author.
Farmer enthusiast Michael Croteau spread the word about the event through his website,
The Official Philip José Farmer Home Page, resulting in fans coming to Peoria from across the country.

In 2006, no longer able to travel to science fiction conventions as they had done in the past,
Farmer and his wife Bette decided it was time for the mountain to come to Mohammed.
Thus FarmerCon was originally conceived to be a gathering of fans in Peoria, figuratively, and literally,
right outside Phil’s back door. With programs, speeches, panels, dinners, and picnics at the author’s house,
the convention quickly became a great success. After the passing of Phil and Bette Farmer in 2009,
it was decided to take FarmerCon on the road, giving fans of the author an opportunity to meet other
Farmer devotees unable to travel to Peoria. And by holding FarmerCon alongside events like PulpFest,
Farmer fans get a weekend full of programming (including several Farmer-related presentations on
Friday, July 29th) and a room full of pulp and book dealers to enjoy.
It also keeps Philip José Farmer’s name in the public eye, reminding fans of his long and amazing body of work.

Please welcome FarmerCon VI to PulpFest 2011. We hope they’ll be back again and again.

Rare “Shadow” Films to be Screened
This year PulpFest celebrates the 80th anniversary of the launching of The Shadow Magazine,
which literally changed the course of pulp history by creating the vogue in rough-paper publications
devoted to a single character. As it happens, 2011 is also the 80th anniversary of The Shadow’s
celluloid debut; the character was featured in six short subjects released to theaters between the
summer of 1931 and the spring of 1932. PulpFest, in conjunction with Anthony Tollin’s Sanctum Books,
has obtained copies of three Shadow featurettes—including the first—and will kick off its
anniversary celebration of The Shadow Magazine by screening them on Thursday evening, July 28th.

Advertised as Shadow Detective Mysteries, these two-reel short subjects
(running approximately 20 minutes each)
followed the format of The Detective Story Hour, the weekly radio program that began in July of 1930
and dramatized stories from Street & Smith’s Detective Story Magazine.
Created for this show, The Shadow originally served as each episode’s narrator, not its protagonist.
His sinister tones and sepulchral laugh—provided by actor Frank Readick—
were those Walter Gibson described in his early Shadow novels.

The radio program’s surprise success not only resulted in The Shadow’s retooling as a pulp-magazine hero,
but also in his visualization by filmmakers eager in those early “talkie” years to capitalize on the popularity
of characters whose adventures traveled over the ether waves.
The Detective Story Hour was licensed for screen adaptation less than a year after it began.

Like the individual radio episodes, each Shadow Detective Mystery was based on a yarn from
Detective Story Magazine. The first featurette, “A Burglar to the Rescue,” was adapted from a
Herman Landon story of the same title, which appeared in the November 1, 1930 issue of the pulp.
Shot in New York City, it starred Thurston Hall, Charlotte Wynters, and Frank Shannon—
all of whom would make their marks on Hollywood, the latter as “Dr. Zarkov” in the Flash Gordon serials.
The Shadow, seen as a cloaked figure whose silhouette flitted across walls, was voiced by radio’s Readick.
Fortunately, this two-reeler is one of the three that will be screened at PulpFest.

The other two featurettes we’re running, “House of Mystery” and “The Circus Show-up,”
are based on Detective Story Magazine yarns by Judson P. Phillips and Leslie T. White respectively.
“Burglar to the Rescue” was screened some years ago at a Hollywood-based film festival shortly
after it was discovered and preserved; to date it has not been exhibited elsewhere.
“House of Mystery” and “The Circus Show-up” have not been shown in any public venue since
being preserved. PulpFest 2011 attendees will be the first people to have seen these short subjects
since their theatrical engagements in 1932.

The PulpFest committee thanks Anthony Tollin, publisher of The Shadow and Doc Savage reprint series,
for his support of this undertaking, which is certain to generate lots of buzz as convention time draws near. Additional details will be posted on the PulpFest web site as they become available.
For more information about these Shadow short subjects, please visit the Sanctum Books website.

Radio Archives - Now available!
Fifty years from now, should some intrepid archaeologist happen to come across a stack of radio and movie scripts from the postwar years, he or she is bound to end up with an interesting take on our culture. It's likely, in fact, that American society circa 1947 will be interpreted as paranoid, suspicious, and steeped in fear and dread. And if, in that pile of crumbling paper, that archaeologist also happens upon scripts for a little-known radio series titled "The Unexpected", his or her impression of a society in psychological crisis would be even more certain.

"The Unexpected" was produced by Hamilton-Whitney Productions, a Los Angeles-based company creating programs for syndication. Unlike big-time network dramatic shows, Hamilton-Whitney couldn't afford the price tags attached to "A" list celebrities - but this actually proved beneficial, since busy radio and movie character actors like Barry Sullivan, Jack Holt, and Lurene Tuttle were used to playing a multitude of parts with very little rehearsal. The budgets may have been small but, thanks to experienced hands both before and behind the microphone, the results were quite impressive.

Then as now, every show that hoped for success had to have some sort of hook or gimmick that differentiated it from other shows. In the case of "The Unexpected", the series specialized in tense stories of mystery and suspense, usually centering on the thoughts or actions of a single person. A prison inmate, fed up with the verbal abuse of the guards, suddenly snaps and makes his escape...a counterfeiter, fearing capture, gets involved in a card game with the intention of losing all of his phony currency...a ship captain, owing money to a gambling syndicate, plans to sink his own ship for the insurance money - all were simple but engaging plots for this enterprising series. But the fascinating thing about the shows - and the "hook" designed to attract and retain the interest of listeners - was the twist ending that came with each program. You'll be listening along to the story and then, just about the time the plot is being resolved, the program's announcer will say "You think the story is over, don't you? But wait! Fate takes a hand. Wait...for the Unexpected!" Well, after that, what can a listener do but sit through the commercial to find out the REAL ending to the tale?

If you're a fan of suspenseful mysteries - and particularly if you love surprise endings - you'll find "The Unexpected, Volume 2" to be a real delight. Transferred directly from original transcription recordings and fully restored for sparkling audio fidelity, this second collection features such talented performers as Lurene Tuttle, Lyle Talbot, Barry Sullivan, and Virginia Gregg.

What's more, this new collection is now available in two formats: you can get the five-CD set for just $14.98 or, if you prefer, you can get "The Unexpected, Volume 2" as a digital download for just $9.98! Stop by RadioArchives.com and order your copy right away!

Robert E. Howard Days - June 10 & 11, 2011!
Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas, is happening once again in 2011 (“officially”) on June 10 & 11. Hope you can make plans to be there. There will be many more details forthcoming this week as we get the REH Days Information Page tuned up for 2011, so hang with us and stay tuned.

This year, under the sponsorship of The Robert E. Howard Foundation and Project Pride of Cross Plains, with assistance from the Robert E. Howard United Press Association, our “theme” is all about Howard History. 2011 marks four unique anniversaries upon which will will devote our festivities. Cross Plains, Texas is already celebrating it’s 100th anniversary as an incorporated town (you can follow this on Facebook right now), it’s the 75th year of honoring the Legacy of REH, it’s the 50th anniversary of Glenn Lord’s benchmark Howard publication, The Howard Collector, and it’s the 25th anniversary of the very first Robert E. Howard Days.

Keeping that history angle in mind, we’ve chosen two Legendary REH publishers to be our Co-Guests of Honor this year: Damon Sasser and Dennis McHaney. Those of you familiar with Howard Fandom will of course recognize Damon and Dennis and we’re happy to have them at Howard Days to talk and be available to their legions of fans. Damon is the publisher of REH: Two-Gun Raconteur (“The definitive Howard Fanzine”) and runs the REH: TGR blog, and Dennis’ The Howard Review is his ultimate claim to fame (among others) in a nearly 40 year career as as a REH publisher. Dennis also runs the biggest REH message board at rehinnercircle.com.

There’s lots more info to come here on the REHupa site, plus there’ll be info at the REH Foundation site, Damon’s TGR blog and Conan.com. We’re in the process of setting up the scheduling for Howard Days, plus there’ll be some truly fantastic events happening if everything falls into place this year. All of the familiar fan-friendly events are still happening: House & Town tours, Banquet & Silent Auction, Swap Meet, Postal Cancellation, Saturday BBQ plus a plethora of interesting panels & hopefully some special events.

Ok, if that’s not enough enticement, keep your radio dial tuned here for updates and more detailed information. In the meantime, shouldn’t you be making your plans to get to Howard Days this year? We’ll be looking for you! Y’all come!

Tarzan Feature Film - In the works!
Warner Bros has locked Craig Brewer into a deal to write and direct a new installment of Tarzan. Brewer has come up with a take that tells the Tarzan story over three films. He hopes the first one will be his next directing assignment. Warner Bros, which has been stymied in watching several attempts to relaunch the  Edgar Rice Burroughs-created hero die on the vine, separately has screenwriter Adam Cozad working on a script that tells a different version of the man raised by apes in the jungles of Africa from infancy. Cozad's recent work includes the Jack Ryan reboot and Archangel, the pic that has Tron: Legacy's Joseph Kosinski attached. How the studio decides which film to make remains to be seen, but clearly Warner Bros is determined to revive a live action Tarzan.  This is a passion project for Brewer, who is in demand after directing the remake of Footloose for Paramount, and chose this over other opportunities. Jerry Weintraub is producing with Alan Riche and Tony Ludwig.
