Almost a full year before
his first appearance in the pulps, The Shadow debuted as the mysterious narrator
of The Detective Story Hour, a CBS radio program sponsored by Street & Smith. On Friday evening, July 29th, popular culture historian Martin Grams will contribute to PulpFest’’s salute to the 80th anniversary of the first hero pulp by presenting a fascinating slide show concerning the radio program that inspired the pulp magazine. Join David Saunders on Friday, July 29th at 8 PM in the PulpFest programming room for "Wild American Pulp Artists," a presentation on illustrators Emery Clarke, Robert Harris, and Milton Luros, all of them born 100 years ago in 1911. All three artists drew black and white interior art and painted front covers for a variety of magazines. The son of Norman Saunders, David is an accomplished artist himself. Additionally, he is probably the leading expert on pulp magazine art, having written and spoken extensively on the subject. PulpFest Celebrates 100 Years of Talbot Mundy When it comes to adventure fiction, one of its greatest practitioners was Talbot Mundy, born William Lancaster Gribbon in 1879. He began writing in his early thirties, following years of adventuring in India, Africa, and other parts of the world. Or so the story goes; much of his early life was romanticized over the years, largely by the author himself. This summer, PulpFest will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Talbot Mundy’s first appearance in print with a showing of THE BLACK WATCH, a film adaptation of Mundy’s “King of the Khyber Rifles,” the author's best known work. |

Haffner Press - Early
Summer Update! It's been a little over two months since our last update, so here's a new broadside to bring things up to date. We're still chomping at the bit to announce some M-A-J-O-R news, but we're still pulling all the details together. Hopefully we'll have something to share by the end of June. On to the news! 1) Success at Windy City - The 11th Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention was held the weekend of April 15th in Lombard, IL and it was HP's best year ever for sales. Organizers Doug Ellis and John Gunnison and their cadre of friends and family members did an outstanding job organizing and running the event. We scored a larger-than-expected amount of pulps with tales by Henry Kuttner for future projects - hooray! We even had to sneak away for 8 hours in the middle of the night to the Secret Moon Base to get more inventory (we said it was our best year for sales). Really looking forward to next year: http://windycitypulpandpaper.com/ 2) Sales of New Titles - Hot on the heels of THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF THE JACK WILLIAMSON LECTURESHIP and AT THE HUMAN LIMIT, THE COLLECTED STORIES OF JACK WILLIAMSON, VOLUME EIGHT, we also used Windy City Pulp and Paper to debut THE COLLECTED CAPTAIN FUTURE, VOLUME TWO and THE UNIVERSE WRECKERS, THE COLLECTED EDMOND HAMILTON, VOLUME THREE. I'm especially proud of THE UNIVERSE WRECKERS: it contains two un-reprinted "novels," the three-part serial "The Universe Wreckers" from Amazing Stories, 1930 and "Cities in the Air" from Air Wonder Stories. But in the lead-up to the release of SHANNACH, we'll be periodically posting all manner of trivia, info, minutiae, etc. to the SHANNACH THE LAST Facebook page. One entry is up already, and dozens more to follow. 7) Speaking of Pulpfest, we're hard at work on our presentation celebrating the Centennial of C.L. Moore. If you've seen HP's previous presentations on Jack Williamson, Edmond Hamilton, and Leigh Brackett, you know that you are guaranteed to learn something new, encounter obscure and rare items, and a few laughs along the way. That's all for now, fellow astrogators. Our next update will feature feedback on THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF THE WILLIAMSON LECTURESHIP (about 20 autographed copies remain), an update on the Leigh Brackett biography, and maybe (just maybe) we'll finally be able to spring that M-A-J-O-R announcement for you. Rollins: THE DEVIL COLONY (Sigma Force Novel)
Could the founding
of America be based on a fundamental lie, one coded in secrets that
stretch back to before the birth of Christ, to a mystery buried
in the prehistoric past? The truth lies hidden within the ruins
of a cursed lost colony of the Americas. A place known only as: THE DEVIL
COLONY. During a sweat lodge ceremony in an Indian cave in the Rocky
Mountains, a horrible massacre ensues. Bodies are found blistered and
burned and purposefully positioned to form two shapes: a five-pointed
star and a sickle-shaped moon. One man recognizes the warning behind
the gruesome murders: Painter Crowe, director of Sigma. He has seen
these two symbols before and knows the deaths were a personal threat
- one of the dead is his beloved cousin. From the frozen volcanic peaks
of Iceland to the blistering deserts of the American Southwest, from
the tombs of dead presidents to the gold vaults of Fort Knox, Painter
Crowe joins forces with Commander Grayson Pierce and an unlikely ally
- a woman who may have had a hand in the murders - to penetrate the shadowy
heart of a dark cabal that has been manipulating American history since
the founding of the thirteen colonies. But can he discover the truth
- one that could topple governments - before it destroys all he holds
dear? Including the woman he loves. Arriving in book stores June 21st! Hardcover: 448 pages Publisher: William Morrow ISBN-10: 0061784788 ISBN-13: 978-0061784781

PulpFest Celebrates 100
Years of Talbot Mundy
When it comes to adventure fiction, one of its greatest practitioners was Talbot Mundy, born William Lancaster Gribbon in 1879. On Friday evening, July 29th, popular culture historian Martin Grams will launch PulpFest’s salute to the 80th anniversary of the first hero pulp by presenting a fascinating slide show concerning the radio program that inspired the pulp magazine. Pooling together twelve years of independent research, Martin will offer a fascinating view of the Shadow of the air waves and explain how The Shadow became one of the most recognized and well known radio programs of all time. |

Robert
E. Howard - News and Announcements! Robert E. Howard Days may be over for 2011, but there were some interesting announcements made. Thanks to Ed Chaczyk and Damon Sasser for the information below! Mr.Malmberg (Paradox Entertainment) has emphatically stated that the Conan movie (out Aug 19) will definitely be R rated. Marcus Nispel had thrown buckets and buckets of blood at the actors during production. The director's edit comes in at 2 hours and 40 minutes, but is now being trimmed to something around 2 hours with the credits. Previewed at Howard Days was the "Red Band" trailer. This is the R-rated trailer. Until now, because of how the movie ratings board works, only PG-13 trailers could be shown before PG-13 films. R rated movie trailers could only be shown before R rated movies. And once you say that your movie is R-rated, there's no going back and trying to show any trailer from an R-rated movie before a PG-13 movie. So to get the most advertising bang for the buck, a PG-13 edited trailer was being shown before both PG-13 AND R Rated movies. Christophe Gans, director of Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill is on board as writer and director for a new Dark Agnes movie. A Kull movie is in the works, as are film adaptations of “Vultures of Wahpeton” and “Pigeons From Hell” – some talk of a Steve Costigan movie as well. Plans are also for a sequel to the Conan movie to premiere in two years. Paradox hopes to keep Momoa busy on another of their films so he doesn’t get tied up making some other movie when the filming begins on the sequel. A lot of folks have been clamoring for a hardback collection of Jim and Ruth Keegan’s “Two-Gun Bob” comic strips and Dark Horse seems willing to do one once they have 200 strips under their belts – they completed 120, so 80 more to go for the book to come to fruition. Rob Roehm talked of many books in the works to be published by the REH Foundation. SPICY ADVENTURES with a cover by the Keegans, will be the next book out from the REH Foundation Press, with a number of other items in the pipeline behind it including a multi-volume “Fight Stories“ collection and a biographical book containing Post Oaks & Sand Roughs, along with some of Howard’s other biographical related material. Dennis McHaney will have out soon Illustrating Robert E. Howard, featuring interviews and write-ups on the top Howard illustrators, plus a ton of their artwork in full color. Dennis McHaney, one of this year's Guests of Honor, introduced a new book, "Anniversary: Glenn Lord and the Howard Collector". Dennis edited the book which features many essays and tributes to Glenn Lord and 5 REH stories. It should be available soon. |

Gary Lovisi - Now available! Bad Girls Need Love Too (Krause Books, 2010, $12 + postage) is a lovely hardcover book with almost 200 of the greatest sexy and provocative paperback covers shown in full color and accompanied by the outrageous and campy blurbs and teaser text that was used to help sell these books to legions of frisky male paperback buyers in the 50s and 60s. It’s a fun, cool ride and makes a great gift book for that special someone at a special bargain price of just $12.00! More Secret Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Ramble House, 2011, trade paperback, $15; hardcover $29.), collects three new Sherlock Holmes pastiches, two long stories that were heavily cut when published which have been restored to their original lengths and are published here for the first time in America. The book includes a new introduction about how the stories came to be written and a Historical Note at the end of each story to put them into historical perspective. Also still available: Secret Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Ramble House, 2007, trade paperback, $15; hardcover $29.), my earlier collection of three Sherlock Holmes pastiche stories, including “The Adventure of the Missing Detective” which the Mystery Writers of America nominated as Best Short Story of the year. Also contains a new introduction and an Afterword by famed author Richard A. Lupoff. Murder of a Bookman (Wildside Mystery Double #5, 2011, trade paperback original, $15), two biblio-mystery crime novels back-to-back in this new “Double” format. Murder of A Bookman has Detective Bentley Hollow investigating the brutal murder of bookseller Brian MacDonald, who was less than honest in his professional and personal dealings, so there is no lack of suspects. Meanwhile, Hollow has problems of his own, his wife has just left him and he has been partnered on the case with a detective he loathes and who hates him. By the time he finds a solution to the crime his life will be irrevocably changed! First of a new mystery series. Bookman is backed with The Paperback Show Murders by Robert Reginald, (cover art by Robert Maguire) where murders at an LA paperback show form the backdrop for a fun crime read. Both books feature fascinating and fun lore from the world of collectable books. You’ll get a kick out of reading both sides of this new Wildside “Double”! Driving Hell’s Highway (Wildside Mystery Double #4, 2011, trade paperback original, $15), He had no past and no future, only the long open road ahead of him. What he would find out there he had no idea, but he knew it would be full of danger and violence. A hard-boiled surreal noir novel about a lone man driving the back roads of America. This novel is backed with Devil’s Plague by Michael R. Collings a fine violent murder mystery novel. Gargoyle Nights (Wildside Double #16, 2011, trade paperback, $15.), In the last days of Oldearth’s last city the greatest wizard of mystical Shenumbra creates a monstrous gargoyle to carry out his sinister designs -- then things get out of hand. Inspired by the fantasy horror of H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and Jack Vance; a series of three previously published stories in which the dreaded gargoyle pursues it’s dark mission throughout the eons. This novel is backed with Do The Weird Crime, Do The Weird Time by Don Webb, a stunning collection of bizarre crime stories. Ultra-Boiled (Ramble House, 2010, trade paperback $20; hardcover $39, cover art by Joseph Cali), this first edition book collects 23 of my most intense hard crime tales from various print magazines, online sources, and adds many new, never-before published stories as well. Hard Case Crime - Big
re-launch in just 3 months!
Our last new title was Brett Halliday's MURDER IS MY BUSINESS back in August 2010, so we'll have been on hiatus for a bit over a year when our new books hit stores in September. But what a comeback we've got in store! Four books, all brand new, including an original novel by Lawrence Block called GETTING OFF (our first ever hardcover title); a new Quarry novel from Max Allan Collins, QUARRY'S EX; a new novel from Christa Faust, CHOKE HOLD, starring Angel Dare from her Edgar Award-nominated MONEY SHOT; and THE CONSUMMATA, the long-awaited second adventure of the hero of Mickey Spillane's bestselling THE DELTA FACTOR, which was begun by Spillane in the 1960s and finished by Spillane's long-time friend Max Allan Collins some four decades later. You can get a taste of each of these books at our Web site, www.HardCaseCrime.com. While you're there you can also enjoy a glimpse of our big Spring 2012 title, a never-before-published novel by the late, great Donald E. Westlake. The book is called THE COMEDY IS FINISHED, and it's going to be our second hardcover ever. Don wrote it between the late 1970s and early 80s, but never published it because he found himself worrying that its premise -- the kidnaping of a famous television comedian -- was too similar to the movie "The King of Comedy," which Martin Scorsese released around the same time. He shouldn't have worried -- the book and the movie aren't similar at all outside of sharing that basic premise. It's a hell of a good book and one that very much deserves to be in print, and we're very excited to be bringing it out for the first time, with a fabulous cover by Greg Manchess. If you would like a Westlake fix sooner than that, we'll be bringing out a trade paperback edition of SOMEBODY OWES ME MONEY at the start of July (you'll see it on the front tables at Barnes & Noble, among other places). It's our first book ever in the slightly larger trade paperback format, and as much as I like the smaller pocket-sized format we've used in the past, I have to say I love how this particular cover painting looks with a little more room to breathe. You can pre-order the new edition online already; you can also pre-order THE COMEDY IS FINISHED and all our September/October titles. Meanwhile, all our old titles should be back in stores at this point, so if there are any holes in your collection you should be able to fill them now. We're still waiting to hear from our new publisher, Titan Books, about whether or not they'll be able to offer a 'book club'-style subscription service of the sort our old publisher used to offer -- they'd like to, but it's a complicated thing to set up, and the jury's still out. (As soon as we have a final answer from them, we'll let you know.) But fortunately there are other ways to get both our old books and our forthcoming titles by mail if you want them that way -- you can find them on Amazon.com, BN.com, and numerous other sites. Or you can ask your local bookseller to get them for you. We'd encourage you to support your local brick-and-mortar bookstores if at all possible -- they need your business to stay in business. But you have a wide range of options, and we're grateful for your support no matter which option you choose. Finally, note that HAVEN, the TV series inspired by Stephen King's Hard Case Crime title, THE COLORADO KID, returns to SyFy on July 15th. I'm not penning an episode myself this season but I'm still working on the show as a producer and consulting on all the scripts, and I can tell you we've got some good ones coming. (Plus a new character, Evidence Ryan, named after my newborn daughter. Has there ever been a better reason to watch a TV show than that...?) Hope you enjoy HAVEN if you do check it out; our new books when they start coming; and the rest of what will no doubt be a long, hot summer. Charles Ardai |

Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 20-23, 2011!
As it has for the past 35 years, the Friends of Old Time Radio
will meet at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, N.J., on the third weekend
in October, this year the 20th-23rd, to gather stars and fans to celebrate
dramatic radio. The big difference this year is that it will be
our final convention and we want to go out with the biggest, best convention
we've had in years. No expense will be spared to bring in as many of the living radio acting veterans we can find. We have great historians, directors, authors and actors clamoring to put on their very best programs - and we hope that the annual excuse we hear from so many "I don't have time, I'll get there one of these years" just won't apply. So far, we know that Arthur Anderson, veteran of The Mercury Theater, 29 years as the spokes-leprechaun for Lucky Charms, and author of the definitive history of radio program "Let's Pretend," will direct an episode of this series as his personal sign-off of more than 20 years attending our events. Outstanding actors such as Rosemary Rice of Archie on the radio and I Remember Mama on TV, Tommy Cook of Red Ryder, Nan Warren of Let's Pretend, Richard Herd of Theater 5 and (later) Seinfeld, Will Hutchins of Sugarfoot, legendary X-1 writer George Lefferts, actor/d.j. Michael C. Gwynne, the son of big band leader Frankie Kaye, are already confirmed with many more to come. The convention will as always feature live recreations of classic shows, panel discussions with the stars, music, the biggest nostalgia dealer rooms around, selling movies, TV, hundreds of thousands of hours of old time radio recordings and more, and unique opportunities to directly interact with the stars and ask about their amazing careers. No one is behind a velvet rope charging for autographs at Friends of Old Time Radio. The stars are having just as much fun as you are, if not more. The program is split between a day session that lasts from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and features many of the panels and discussions, as well as live recreations. The evening program includes a buffet dinner followed by two recreations as well as awards to the special guests and raffles and the like. We try to make the dinner recreations our most star-studded, exciting theater. The guests are distributed across the tables at dinner, so you will always have at least one celebrity at your table. Dinner rates are inclusive of the day rates. We haven't set final pricing yet but in recent years, the day admission has been $25 ($20 in advance) and dinners ranged from $60 - $75 or so depending on the day, which packages available for people staying for all four days. We're also looking for any old time radio actors or other professionals such as writers, sound effects specialists, producers, casting agents, etc., who are interested in attending to contact us. |

The PulpFest Organizing Committee is pleased to announce that the nomination process for the 2011 Munsey Award has been a tremendous success. Twenty-five people were nominated by pulp fans for this year’s award. The final nominee list has been pared down to the following eleven individuals whose names will be forwarded to a committee made up of all the living Lamont and Munsey Award winners who will select the person to receive the 2011 Munsey: William Contento, Win Scott Eckert, Stephen Haffner, Steve Miller, Matt Moring, Laurie Powers, Garyn Roberts, Phil Stephensen-Payne, Anthony Tollin, George Vanderburgh, and Dan Zimmer. You’ll find further details about each nominee on the 2011 nominees page of our website. FarmerCon Coming to PulpFest PulpFest 2011 is pleased to announce that FarmerCon VI will be held concurrently at our convention. An annual gathering for fans of Grand Master of Science Fiction Philip José Farmer, FarmerCon is rooted in Peoria, Illinois, the late author’s home town. It all started soon after Phil had won the Grand Master award at the 2001 Nebula Awards ceremony. To honor the event, the Peoria Public Library staged a Living Legend Reception for the author. Farmer enthusiast Michael Croteau spread the word about the event through his website, The Official Philip José Farmer Home Page, resulting in fans coming to Peoria from across the country. In 2006, no longer able to travel to science fiction conventions as they had done in the past, Farmer and his wife Bette decided it was time for the mountain to come to Mohammed. Thus FarmerCon was originally conceived to be a gathering of fans in Peoria, figuratively, and literally, right outside Phil’s back door. With programs, speeches, panels, dinners, and picnics at the author’s house, the convention quickly became a great success. After the passing of Phil and Bette Farmer in 2009, it was decided to take FarmerCon on the road, giving fans of the author an opportunity to meet other Farmer devotees unable to travel to Peoria. And by holding FarmerCon alongside events like PulpFest, Farmer fans get a weekend full of programming (including several Farmer-related presentations on Friday, July 29th) and a room full of pulp and book dealers to enjoy. It also keeps Philip José Farmer’s name in the public eye, reminding fans of his long and amazing body of work. Please welcome FarmerCon VI to PulpFest 2011. We hope they’ll be back again and again. Rare “Shadow”
Films to be Screened
This year PulpFest celebrates the 80th anniversary of the launching of The Shadow Magazine, which literally changed the course of pulp history by creating the vogue in rough-paper publications devoted to a single character. As it happens, 2011 is also the 80th anniversary of The Shadow’s celluloid debut; the character was featured in six short subjects released to theaters between the summer of 1931 and the spring of 1932. PulpFest, in conjunction with Anthony Tollin’s Sanctum Books, has obtained copies of three Shadow featurettes—including the first—and will kick off its anniversary celebration of The Shadow Magazine by screening them on Thursday evening, July 28th. Advertised as Shadow Detective Mysteries, these two-reel short subjects (running approximately 20 minutes each) followed the format of The Detective Story Hour, the weekly radio program that began in July of 1930 and dramatized stories from Street & Smith’s Detective Story Magazine. Created for this show, The Shadow originally served as each episode’s narrator, not its protagonist. His sinister tones and sepulchral laugh—provided by actor Frank Readick— were those Walter Gibson described in his early Shadow novels. The radio program’s surprise success not only resulted in The Shadow’s retooling as a pulp-magazine hero, but also in his visualization by filmmakers eager in those early “talkie” years to capitalize on the popularity of characters whose adventures traveled over the ether waves. The Detective Story Hour was licensed for screen adaptation less than a year after it began. Like the individual radio episodes, each Shadow Detective Mystery was based on a yarn from Detective Story Magazine. The first featurette, “A Burglar to the Rescue,” was adapted from a Herman Landon story of the same title, which appeared in the November 1, 1930 issue of the pulp. Shot in New York City, it starred Thurston Hall, Charlotte Wynters, and Frank Shannon— all of whom would make their marks on Hollywood, the latter as “Dr. Zarkov” in the Flash Gordon serials. The Shadow, seen as a cloaked figure whose silhouette flitted across walls, was voiced by radio’s Readick. Fortunately, this two-reeler is one of the three that will be screened at PulpFest. The other two featurettes we’re running, “House of Mystery” and “The Circus Show-up,” are based on Detective Story Magazine yarns by Judson P. Phillips and Leslie T. White respectively. “Burglar to the Rescue” was screened some years ago at a Hollywood-based film festival shortly after it was discovered and preserved; to date it has not been exhibited elsewhere. “House of Mystery” and “The Circus Show-up” have not been shown in any public venue since being preserved. PulpFest 2011 attendees will be the first people to have seen these short subjects since their theatrical engagements in 1932. The PulpFest committee thanks Anthony Tollin, publisher of The Shadow and Doc Savage reprint series, for his support of this undertaking, which is certain to generate lots of buzz as convention time draws near. Additional details will be posted on the PulpFest web site as they become available. For more information about these Shadow short subjects, please visit the Sanctum Books website. PulpFest |

Howard Foundation and Project Pride of Cross Plains, with assistance from the Robert E. Howard United Press Association, our “theme” is all about Howard History. 2011 marks four unique anniversaries upon which will will devote our festivities. Cross Plains, Texas is already celebrating it’s 100th anniversary as an incorporated town (you can follow this on Facebook right now), it’s the 75th year of honoring the Legacy of REH, it’s the 50th anniversary of Glenn Lord’s benchmark Howard publication, The Howard Collector, and it’s the 25th anniversary of the very first Robert E. Howard Days. Keeping that history angle in mind, we’ve chosen two Legendary REH publishers to be our Co-Guests of Honor this year: Damon Sasser and Dennis McHaney. Those of you familiar with Howard Fandom will of course recognize Damon and Dennis and we’re happy to have them at Howard Days to talk and be available to their legions of fans. Damon is the publisher of REH: Two-Gun Raconteur (“The definitive Howard Fanzine”) and runs the REH: TGR blog, and Dennis’ The Howard Review is his ultimate claim to fame (among others) in a nearly 40 year career as as a REH publisher. Dennis also runs the biggest REH message board at rehinnercircle.com. There’s lots more info to come here on the REHupa site, plus there’ll be info at the REH Foundation site, Damon’s TGR blog and Conan.com. We’re in the process of setting up the scheduling for Howard Days, plus there’ll be some truly fantastic events happening if everything falls into place this year. All of the familiar fan-friendly events are still happening: House & Town tours, Banquet & Silent Auction, Swap Meet, Postal Cancellation, Saturday BBQ plus a plethora of interesting panels & hopefully some special events. Ok, if that’s not enough enticement, keep your radio dial tuned here for updates and more detailed information. In the meantime, shouldn’t you be making your plans to get to Howard Days this year? We’ll be looking for you! Y’all come! |

Tarzan Feature Film - In the works! Warner Bros has locked Craig Brewer into a deal to write and direct a new installment of Tarzan. Brewer has come up with a take that tells the Tarzan story over three films. He hopes the first one will be his next directing assignment. Warner Bros, which has been stymied in watching several attempts to relaunch the Edgar Rice Burroughs-created hero die on the vine, separately has screenwriter Adam Cozad working on a script that tells a different version of the man raised by apes in the jungles of Africa from infancy. Cozad's recent work includes the Jack Ryan reboot and Archangel, the pic that has Tron: Legacy's Joseph Kosinski attached. How the studio decides which film to make remains to be seen, but clearly Warner Bros is determined to revive a live action Tarzan. This is a passion project for Brewer, who is in demand after directing the remake of Footloose for Paramount, and chose this over other opportunities. Jerry Weintraub is producing with Alan Riche and Tony Ludwig. |
