Donald Sidney-Fryer: The Atlantis Fragments - Now available!
The first novel-length fragment of Atlantean literature yet discovered and translated via the French by Donald Sidney-Fryer.

These poems are of an unearthly beauty. They celebrate love, beauty, and humanity; and yet throughout many of them is a consciousness of impending apocalypse. The imagery, lush, exotic, full of colors and magic names, is a welcome relief from the sterile, prosaic poetry of today. If you enjoy tripping on language, this book is for you. Whether the poems really are from the Atlantean or whether they are the creations of poet Sidney-Fryer, they deserve to be read and experienced.

Radio Archives - Now available!
Created by cartoonist Ham Fisher, Joe Palooka had made his newspaper debut in 1930. Since that time, his popularity had grown to the point that his exploits were being carried in 900 newspapers throughout the country – helped, no doubt, by the fact that the pugilist had spent the war years serving in the United States Army. One of the earliest characters to enlist, Joe joined the military in 1940 and spent the next five years fighting the Axis forces in both his daily and Sunday comic strips. Not surprisingly, he was a big hit with GI's, his adventures printed in both Stars and Stripes and Yank, two newspapers printed exclusively for military personnel.

Realizing that the war had brought fame and respect to the character far beyond his expectations, in 1945, Ham Fisher decided that it was time to bring Joe Palooka back to radio in a new series of peacetime adventures. To bring his comic strip to life, Fisher first contacted Harold Conrad, a former Broadway columnist who had lately turned to press agentry and free-lance writing. There was no question that Conrad had knowledge of the boxing world and Fisher felt that his fascination with the eccentrics and
rogues that populated the sport would infuse the radio version with an authentic ringside flavor. Conrad agreed to write a couple of radio scripts for a syndicated series to be produced by Graphic Radio Productions, Inc. Two audition shows were quickly produced by the NBC Radio-Recording Division in their Chicago Merchandise Mart studios, but the series failed to sell.

Undaunted by this, Ham Fisher then took the concept to John Boler, the President of the North Central Broadcasting System, which supplied programming to a number of midsized radio stations. Boler, in conjunction with Fisher's partners, agreed to produce a five-a-week radio series to be recorded in the studios of the L. S. Toogood Recording Company in Chicago. Recording began in the fall of 1945 and, over the next few months, a total of 130 fifteen-minute episodes were produced – 26 weeks worth of daily shows. As it turned out, however, 1946 was not a good year for North Central Broadcasting; in the summer, the company filed for bankruptcy and, by the end of the year, it was no more. With all of the financial complications, "Joe Palooka" failed to get the publicity and salesmanship that it deserved and, unfortunately, the series never aired outside of a few small local markets.

Though disappointed by the way things turned out, Ham Fisher remained enthusiastic about Joe Palooka's potential for broadcasting – but radio, it seemed, was not to be his medium. Fisher turned his attention to television and, by 1953, "The Story of Joe Palooka" made its video bow in a syndicated series produced by Guild Films. The radio series, having been heard by very few people, fell into obscurity and has been almost completely forgotten by radio historians – but luckily, a few months ago, Radio Archives acquired twenty episodes of the series, as well as the 1945 audition recordings made by NBC. The result is a brand new five-hour collection containing twenty episodes of "Joe Palooka", as well as the two NBC auditions. For fans of comic strips, as well as those who grew up with Joe Palooka in the movies and on television, it's a rare chance to hear this iconic American hero on the air in his own radio series.

For over fifty years, Joe Palooka, his colorful manager Knobby Walsh, his girlfriend Ann Howe, and the many other characters that populated the comic strip brought enjoyment to millions of devoted readers. In this five CD set, priced at just $14.98, you'll enjoy five full hours of his radio adventures, made available here for the very first time since 1945. It's a fascinating glimpse into the history of an American icon who entertained and inspired American youth – and it's now available from RadioArchives.com.

Radio Archives Treasure Chest Bargains - Now available & coming soon!
If you keep up with the movie business, you know that pirates have once again returned to the silver screen in another big-budget blockbuster. Hoisting the Jolly Roger and setting sail for adventure on the high seas, these bloodthirsty characters have been a part of film history since the days when Douglas Fairbanks drew his sword and slid down the mainsail in "The Black Pirate".

One of the motivations of any good buccaneer has always been the pursuit of buried treasure – legendary mother lodes of gold doubloons, jewels, and untold riches, hidden away and just waiting to be plundered. But if you're a regular Radio Archives customer, you know that you don't need to find a hidden map or sail the seven seas to uncover that treasure chest; you'll find one waiting for you every time you visit our home page at RadioArchives.com. Just see the booty that's coming your way this week:

Today through Monday May 30th, you can get our newest CD set - "Joe Palooka", a $14.98 value - for Just 99 Cents when you submit an order of $35.00 or more.

On Tuesday May 31st, pulp fiction's legendary super-sleuth returns in "The Shadow Volume 5", featuring two classic stories by Walter Gibson. In "The Black Falcon", Lamont Cranston is abducted by a kidnapper who unearths secrets from The Shadow's mysterious past. Then, the Knight of Darkness must defeat a Dragon of Fire before the city becomes a blazing inferno in an action-packed thriller titled "The Salamanders". This instant collector's item also features the original pulp covers by George Rozen, interior illustrations by Tom Lovell, and "The Island of Ancient Death," a bonus Shadow story adapted from the Mutual Broadcasting System radio program by scriptwriter Gibson Scott Fox. This beautifully reformatted double-novel reprint is normally priced at $12.95 - but you can enjoy these two exciting adventures for Just 99 Cents when you submit an order of $35.00 or more.

On Wednesday June 1st, lovers of both pulp and radio adventure will thrill to "Adventures by Morse, Volume 1", a ten-CD collection featuring two bloodcurdling multi-part tales from the pen of radio's renaissance man, Carlton E. Morse: "The City of the Dead" and "The Cobra King Strikes Back". Transferred from the original one-of-kind test pressings and fully restored for sparkling audio fidelity, this exciting set offers the finest sounding and most complete versions of these two suspenseful tales ever made available. This timeless compact disc collection normally sells for $29.98 - but, for one day only, it can be yours for Just 99 Cents when you submit an order of $35.00 or more. But wait! There's more pulpy excitement to come!

In the 1930s, writer George Harmon Coxe introduced a new character to the pages of "Black Mask Magazine": a hardboiled newspaper photojournalist named Casey. Instantly popular with readers, in 1943, CBS brought his pulp exploits to radio in "Casey, Crime Photographer", a series of lighthearted mystery tales that combined solid plots, eccentric characters, and the off-center dialogue that could only come from a series set in The Blue Note Bar. Adapted for radio by Alonzo Deen Cole ("The Witch's Tale"), the series is a true radio classic - and on Thursday June 2nd, you can get "Casey, Crime Photographer, Volume 1", a 10-CD set featuring twenty original broadcasts, for Just 99 Cents when you submit an order of $35.00 or more. This collection normally sells for $29.98.

We're sorry but, at these low prices, multiple orders cannot be combined into single shipments. Each separate order must be placed on the days on which the specials are offered and no early or late orders will be accepted.

AudioComics Company: THE DOMINO LADY - New audio project coming soon!
The AudioComics Company is proud to present the second characters in their original pulp audio project will be THE pulp vixen of the 1930′s, the scourge of LA herself, The Domino Lady!

First introduced by Lars Anderson in Saucy Romantic Adventures and Mystery Adventures, The Domino Lady is the alter-ego of Ellen Patrick, a wealthy UC Berkeley graduate out to avenge the murder of her father, District Attorney Owen Patrick, in the Raymond Chandler-esque Southern California of 1935. While she brandished a .45 and syringe of knockout serum, her greatest weapon was her sexuality, which she would use to disarm her unsuspecting opponents. Routinely stealing from her targets, she donates most of the profits to charity after deducting her cut, leaving a calling card with the words “Compliments of the Domino Lady” behind.

DL appeared specifically in “spicy pulp” magazines, pulps that typically featured semi-pornographic short stories. Such magazines had smaller print runs (and were as a result a few cents higher in price) and were usually sold “under the counter” upon request. Only a handful of Domino Lady were published, all of which were collected in Bold Venture Press’ Compliments of the Domino Lady, featuring a cover from the one and only Jim Steranko. In addition, Moonstone Books has published a new series of Domino Lady comics and prose stories. The AudioComics Company’s world-premiere productions will mark the first time that the alter-ego of Ellen Patrick has ever appeared in an audio format.

Portraying the Domino Lady will be San Francisco Bay Area actress and filmmaker Karen Stilwell, who has a unique tie to AudioComics. Click on the link below for more information about
Karen Stilwell.

The first Domino Lady project will be a three-part serial authored by one of the country’s leading DL historians, Rich Harvey, with the first part, “All’s Fair in War,” recording this fall in San Francisco, alongside AudioComics’ first two Green Lama audio adventures. The name Rich Harvey is synonymous with pulp stories and pulp history in the United States; a New Jersey-based graphic designer, writer, and publisher, his Bold Venture Press imprint specializes in reprints of classic pulp fiction, among  them Pulp Adventures magazine and Compliments of the Domino Lady, the reprint collection that thrust the Domino Lady back into the pulp limelight. He also sponsors an annual gathering of pulp enthusiasts, the Pulp Adventurecon, in New Jersey. Rich cites Dashiell Hammett as his favorite author and biggest influence, and next on the list is Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir’s The Destroyer series.

THE FANTASY FAN - The Regular Edition is now available!

THE FANTASY FAN is the complete run of 18 issues dating from September 1933 to February 1935 and contains original first published stories and poems by such amazing people as Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, H.P. Lovecraft, and many more.  Edited by the then 17 year old Charles Hornig, it was the first weird fiction zine ever.

Over the course of a year, the publisher was able to obtain 6 original copies, and xerox duplicates of 3 more, but only knowing half the story, he was obsessed with reading it all.  Fate stepped in and through another fan, he was loaned the remaining issues, and decided to make this into one complete book.  Each page was carefully scanned and cleaned up the areas that were difficult to read, but not altering the typos or layout, so you still felt like you were reading a 75 year old zine.

One thing we did do as a tribute to Mr, Hornig is finish the uncompleted "Supernatural Horror in Literature" essay by H.P. Lovecraft.

This is a limited pressing of 200 books. The first 100 copies comprised a deluxe version that included a slipcase and a special letterpress print included. It was released in early October 2010 and sold out in November 2010.
At long last, the dust jackets for the final group of 100 copies are finished and THE FANTASY FAN is available for sale again!
The price is $44.00. Economy shipping is free.

The New Adventures of John Carter of Mars
Coming Spring 2012!

Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing announced today it will publish a new original anthology called The New Adventures of John Carter of Mars, edited by John Joseph Adams and based on the characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Publication will be in the spring of 2012 and will coincide with the 100th anniversary of A Princess of Mars, the first book to feature John Carter.

The anthology envisions all-new adventures set in Edgar Rice Burroughs' fantastical version of Mars (known in the series as "Barsoom.") This anthology not only imagines new or the lost adventures of John Carter, but also explores the other characters and niches not fully explored by Burroughs. David Gale is the acquiring editor, and Joe Monti of Barry Goldblatt Literary Agency brokered the deal. Simon & Schuster holds World English rights.

Celebrated fantasy writer Tamora Pierce will write the foreword to the anthology, and John Joseph Adams will write the introduction and header notes. The collection will include stories by Joe R. Lansdale; Jonathan Maberry; David Barr Kirtley; Peter S. Beagle; Tobias S. Buckell; Robin Wasserman; Theodora Goss; Genevieve Valentine; L. E. Modesitt, Jr.; Garth Nix; Chris Claremont; S. M. Stirling; Catherynne M. Valente; and Austin Grossman. There will also be a "Barsoomian Gazetteer," a who's who and what's what on Barsoom, written by science fiction author and noted Barsoom expert Richard A. Lupoff. In addition, each story will feature an original illustration by noted artists such as Charles Vess, John Picacio, Michael Kaluta, and Misako Rocks.

At the same time, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers will publish John Carter of Mars, a bind-up of the first three John Carter books: A Princess of Mars, The Warlord of Mars, and The Gods of Mars, with all-new illustrations by Mark Zug, Scott Fischer, and Scott Gustafson.

"I still vividly recall the summer as a teenager that I read all eleven of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars novels in one enthusiastic gulp," said Jon Anderson, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Books for Young Readers. "The opportunity to revisit that experience with new stories from this stellar roster of authors was too much to resist!"

Paizo Publishing: PLANET STORIES
Hunt the Space-Witch! - Now available!
By Robert Silverberg with a new introduction by the author!

Science-fiction legend Robert Silverberg reflects on some of his earliest, least-reprinted tales in this new Planet Stories collection! Between 1956 and 1958, Silverberg contributed dozens of short stories and novellas to the digest pulps, each written in the bombastic, high-adventure style of the original Planet Stories magazine. Since then, those tales have re-appeared only rarely (and sometimes never again) in long out-of-print paperback anthologies. This volume, the first of three to come this year, features seven hard-to-find classic Silverberg novellas:

Slaves of the Star Giants
Spawn of the Deadly Sea
The Flame and the Hammer
Valley Beyond Time
Hunt the Space-Witch!
The Silent Invaders

 “The Summer’s Great Pulp Convention”
PulpFest 2011 is a new and improved version of the venerable convention catering
to fans and collectors of vintage popular fiction.

Join us Friday, July 29th – Sunday, July 31st
at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Columbus, Ohio

PulpFest’s Guest of Honor
The PulpFest organizing committee is pleased to announce that this year’s
guest of honor is none other than Kent Allard.
A veteran of the First World War and long rumored to be The Shadow,
Mr. Allard will be feted in a variety of ways at our 2011 convention.

Through his reputation, Mr. Allard has long been linked to the publication that PulpFest 2011 will be saluting
–Street & Smith’s The Shadow Magazine. Due to his advanced age—Mr. Allard turned 115 this year—
it is not certain that he will be able to attend the 80th anniversary celebration of the cloaked character
who dominated radio, pulp magazines and movies for many years.
Whether or not he is able to attend, Mr. Allard feels that the dynamic programming planned for
PulpFest 2011 will be an exceptional salute to the character many believe to be his alter ego.

The PulpFest organizing committee is pleased to announce that its flyer for the 2011 convention is ready.
Many thanks to Chris Kalb for his brilliant design work.
Please visit our promotion page for links to the new flyers in a variety of formats.
Your help in promoting PulpFest 2011 will be thoroughly appreciated.

Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas, is happening once again in 2011 (“officially”) on June 10 & 11. Hope you can make plans to be there.

This year, under the sponsorship of The Robert E. Howard Foundation and Project Pride of Cross Plains, with assistance from the Robert E. Cross Plains, Texas is already celebrating it’s 100th anniversary as an incorporated town (you can follow this on Facebook right now), it’s the 75th year of honoring the Legacy of REH, it’s the 50th anniversary of Glenn Lord’s benchmark Howard publication, The Howard Collector, and it’s the 25th anniversary of the very first Robert E. Dennis also runs the biggest REH message board at rehinnercircle.com.

There’s lots more info to come here on the REHupa site, plus there’ll be info at the REH Foundation site, Damon’s TGR blog and Conan.com. We’re in the process of setting up the scheduling for Howard Days, plus there’ll be some truly fantastic events happening if everything falls into place this year. All of the familiar fan-friendly events are still happening: House & Town tours, Banquet & Silent Auction, Swap Meet, Postal Cancellation, Saturday BBQ plus a plethora of interesting panels & hopefully some special events.

Ok, if that’s not enough enticement, keep your radio dial tuned here for updates and more detailed information. In the meantime, shouldn’t you be making your plans to get to Howard Days this year? We’ll be looking for you! Y’all come!

Age of Aces - Now available!

"The Iron Ace" by William E. Barrett
In the Misty Skies of WWI France, history is written with flaming guns! And Yank airman Hugh McQuillen had smashed his way into those history books as "The Iron Ace."

Assigned as the C.O. of a Royal Flying Corps squadron, and prowling the skies in his deadly war plane adorned with the Laughing Skull, he was a grim and unrelenting instrument of war who killed Germans with such ruthless efficiency that he became known on both sides of the line as "The Assassin." McQuillen believed there was no decent way to bring men to a violent end, so he would not bow to the "chivalry of the air" practiced by his R.F.C. mates and the Germans. This made the Iron Ace a marked man, and his enemies would stop at nothing to bring an end to his savage reign.

Written by William E. Barrett, the nine tales of "The Iron Ace" appeared in Sky Birds magazine from 1933 through 1934. Barrett is best remembered for his novels, The Left Hand of God and The Lillies of the Field. But he was initially a very busy writer for the pulp magazines. And while much of his work was in the air war mags, he also contributed to the western and detective pulps. One of Barrett's most popular characters appeared in a series of stories in Dime Detective. "Needle Mike" was an undercover crime fighter who posed a s a tattoo artist.

"The Iron Ace" is available from Amazon

THE WORLD ABOVE THE WORLD
Nine proto-science fiction tales by S. Henry Berthoud, Michel Corday,
Alphonse Daudet, Camille Flammarion, André Mas, Jules Perrin & Henri Lanos,
René de Pont-Jest, Charles Recolin
Edited by Brian Stableford

A balloon ascent to the Heavens... A man with X-ray vision... A utopian metal city built on giant pylons above Paris... A sexless world in which women reproduce parthenogenetically and man is unknown... Is science insane? Unholy? See nine French authors of the 19th century grapple in a ground-breaking fashion with the future themes of science fiction.

All the stories included in this volume predate the first translation into French of H.G. Wells. They are representative of a distinct tradition of romans scientifiques whose cardinal influences included astronomer Camille Flammarion and Villiers de l'Isle-Adam. This edition includes a historical introduction and notes by Stableford.

Long before George MacDonald and William Morris, Charles de Fieux, Chevalier de Mouhy (1701-1784), a one-time friend of Voltaire, prolific author of popular and mildly scandalous potboilers (including the first sensational novel about the Man in the Iron Mask) and polemicist, penned one of the first and most extravagant "Extraordinary Voyages."

Lamekis was first published in eight volumes in 1735-38, then reprinted by Charles-Georges-Thomas Garnier -- who listed it, arguably, as one of the first Hollow Earth novels -- in his ground-breaking fantasy imprint of Imaginary Voyages in 1788.

The undisputed masterpiece of Gabriel de Lautrec (1867-1938), THE VENGEANCE OF THE OVAL PORTRAIT, which borrows its title from Edgar Allan Poe, is a collection of 28 stories at the crossroads of horror, fantasy and science fiction. Its singular inspiration owes as much to the author's predilection for dark humor, Grand Guignol and the mixing of genres, as it does to the influence of alcohol and hashish, which he used regularly.

Black Dog Books - Coming soon!
Web of the Sun by T. S. Stribling

Thomas Sigismund Stribling (1881-1965) penned many short works for the periodicals of his day—adventure, satirical, boys adventure, detective and science fiction—which appeared in Everybody's, The Century Magazine, Holland's Magazine, Youth's Companion, American Boy and Adventure. For the later, he is well remembered as the author of a series of detective stories featuring psychologist sleuth Doctor Poggioli.

Ripped from the pages of Adventure are two unreprinted short novels of science fiction, "Web of the Sun" and "The Green Splotches."

But the short story form could not corral the ambitious T.S. Stribling who would win the 1933 Pulizer Prize for the Novel for his work, "The Store."

Black Dog Books - Coming soon!

Everyone recognizes the names of the Cisco Kid, Hopalong Cassidy, Zorro and the Lone Ranger.  But how many actually know the characters from their fictional roots? Years before appearing in film, on radio and television, their creators painted a rather different picture of each from what Hollywood presented for these legendary heroes of the silver screen.

Did you know the Cisco Kid first appeared as a villain?
Or that Hopalong Cassidy was an unpolished hard case far removed from "the friend to every man" as he came to be known in film and television?
In this handsome volume Unmasked collects the first appearances of the Cisco Kid, Hopalong Cassidy, Zorro and a forgotten novel of the Lone Ranger.

With a new introduction and historical essays.

Cover art by George J. Rozen.

Price not set, Trade paperback

Please note: These stories are each newly typeset from their original magazine appearances. Book versions have long condensed these works, editing out in some cases thousands of words from certain of these stories.

1149 A.D. In Italy the Pope preaches Crusade, and the Christian states of Europe send their armies warring to the Holy Land. Sicily, under King Roger II, lies in an uneasy peace. From within, the Norman conquerors who now rule the island face unrest from their Muslim subjects. From without, the Germans, the French, the English, the Byzantines and the Berbers of Africa all covet mastery of the strategically placed isle.

The fortress of Rocca Forte is key to the continued Norman rule of Sicily. Roger has entrusted it to one of his staunchest allies, Count Arnulfo, a mighty warrior known as the Iron Arm. But Arnulfo is growing old and has no son. His beautiful daughter, Lady Fulvia, has courage and wit in abundance and is skilled with sword and bow . . . but is only a woman. Faced with war, confronted by those who wish to marry her for their own unscrupulous ends, what can one woman do? The fate of Norman Sicily rides on the answer . . .

The Lady Fulvia stories appearing in  Adventure magazine between 1918 and 1920. Authors Farnham Bishop and Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur, well-known in the pages of Adventure for coupling their attention to historical detail with rousing action and memorable characters. Lady Fulvia may have been their most interesting creation; a woman seeking to impose her will in a bloody man's world, to save the land of her birth. As Bishop and Brodeur stated in their introduction to the series, "She is the storm-center of Sicily; Sicily is the storm-center of the world."

The Red Witch collects for the first time the complete Lady Fulvia of Rocca Forte cycle of five short stories and one novel.

Included are:
The Golden Snare
The Iron Arm
The Quest of Gaimar the Grim
The Red Witch
The Pass of Blood
The Hand of the Mahdi (novel)

Blood ‘n’ Thunder #28 (Winter 2011)
Now available!

The latest issue of Blood ‘n’ Thunder has just been shipped to subscribers and is now available for single-copy purchase. It offers two articles for Doc Savage fans: one covers the 1985 Doc radio series broadcast over National Public Radio, the other reveals sources used (and even plagiarized) by primary series author Lester Dent while writing about the exotic locales in Doc's adventures. A lengthy and detailed piece by Robert O. Erisman, editor of the pulp line published by Marvel Comics owner Martin Goodman, explains how to build a salable pulp story “brick by brick.” BnT editor Ed Hulse writes about Patria, the 1917 movie serial that sparked an international incident. Gary Lovisi and Mark Trost contribute pulp and paperback reviews, and the little-known 1940 comic-book story featuring a thinly disguised Captain Future (renamed Major Mars) is reprinted for the first time anywhere.

With this issue Blood ‘n’ Thunder returns to a quarterly publication schedule, so the price of yearly subscriptions has increased to $40 postpaid—but that’s still 30 percent less than it would cost to buy the four issues separately.

Single copies are available at $11.95 from Ed Hulse at 2467 Route 10, Bldg. 15, Apt. 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.  Ed also takes payments via Paypal at bnteditor@yahoo.com.

Roger Barclay had faced death many times - at the point of a gun, in the grip of a strangler's fingers. But now he was to learn what it meant to die - artistically. For the tall, thin man with opaque eyes who towered above him like a snake about to spring boasted that he was an artist without equal - in the fine art of exquisite torture.

Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 20-23, 2011!
As it has for the past 35 years, the Friends of Old Time Radio will meet at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, N.J., on the third weekend in October, this year the 20th-23rd, to gather stars and fans to celebrate dramatic radio.  The big difference this year is that it will be our final convention and we want to go out with the biggest, best convention we've had in years.

No expense will be spared to bring in as many of the living radio acting veterans we can find.  We have great historians, directors, authors and actors clamoring to put on their very best programs - and we hope that the annual excuse we hear from so many "I don't have time, I'll get there one of these years" just won't apply.

So far, we know that Arthur Anderson, veteran of The Mercury Theater, 29 years as the spokes-leprechaun for Lucky Charms, and author of the definitive history of radio program "Let's Pretend," will direct an episode of this series as his personal sign-off of more than 20 years attending our events.  Outstanding actors such as Rosemary Rice of Archie on the radio and I Remember Mama on TV, Tommy Cook of Red Ryder, Nan Warren of Let's Pretend, Richard Herd of Theater 5 and (later) Seinfeld, Will Hutchins of Sugarfoot, legendary X-1 writer George Lefferts, actor/d.j. Michael C. Gwynne, the son of big band leader Frankie Kaye, are already confirmed with many more to come.

The convention will as always feature live recreations of classic shows, panel discussions with the stars, music, the biggest nostalgia dealer rooms around, selling movies, TV, hundreds of thousands of hours of old time radio recordings and more, and unique opportunities to directly interact with the stars and ask about their amazing careers.  No one is behind a velvet rope charging for autographs at Friends of Old Time Radio.  The stars are having just as much fun as you are, if not more.

The program is split between a day session that lasts from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and features many of the panels and discussions, as well as live recreations.  The evening program includes a buffet dinner followed by two recreations as well as awards to the special guests and raffles and the like.  We try to make the dinner recreations our most star-studded, exciting theater.  The guests are distributed across the tables at dinner, so you will always have at least one celebrity at your table.  Dinner rates are inclusive of the day rates.  We haven't set final pricing yet but in recent years, the day admission has been $25 ($20 in advance) and dinners ranged from $60 - $75 or so depending on the day, which packages available for people staying for all four days.

We're also looking for any old time radio actors or other professionals such as writers, sound effects specialists, producers, casting agents, etc., who are interested in attending to contact us.

Irish McCalla Sheena - Queen of the Jungle costume up for auction!
Without question the most iconic and erotically-charged female comic-book character brought to the television screen, most surprisingly at the height of censorship and conservative family values. Blonde Amazon Irish McCalla, at 6 ft. 1 in and sporting an exceptional classic figure for a woman of her stature, was the ideal personification of the golden-age comic mythical jungle heroine. From her own collection come two variations, one screen-worn and the other for personal publicity appearances, of her faux-leopard tunic and loincloth complete with belts, horns, scabbard (one with knife intact), armbands, chokers, earrings, and one leather moccasin, plus an additional screen-worn tunic.

For more information and images of the items up for auction, click on the link below.

Hammer returns for the funeral—and because he knows that Inspector Doolan would never have killed himself. But Manhattan in the 1970s no longer feels like home. Hammer’s lovely longtime partner, Velda, has disappeared after he broke it off for her own safety, and his office is shut down.

When a woman is murdered practically on the funeral home’s doorstep, Hammer is drawn into the hunt for a cache of Nazi diamonds that makes the Maltese Falcon seem like a knickknack, and for the mysterious beauty who had been close to Doolan in his final days. But drug racketeers, who had it in for the tough old police inspector, attract Hammer’s attention as well. Soon he is hobnobbing with coke-snorting celebrities at the notorious disco Club 52 and playing footsie with a sleek lady D.A., a modern female on the make for oldfashioned Hammer. Everything leads to a Mafia social club where Hammer and his .45 come calling, initiating the wildest showdown since Spillane’s classic One Lonely Night.

PULP ARK - May 13-15, 2011!
PULP ARK, the Pulp Convention/Creators' Conference debuting May 13-15, 2011 in Batesville, AR, is proud to announce that the event will be held in a location that is a primary part of local history in the historic Arkansas town. Built in 1880, the three story building that will be the home of the first PULP ARK enjoyed life as Batesville's Opera House for eight years. It was renovated and made into a mercantile store after that and then later was home to various other enterprises. It currently houses THE CINNAMON STICK, a coffee and sandwich restaurant. The over 6,000 square feet of space provides not only ample places for tables, displays and guests, but access to the lower level provides an onsite location for panels and classrooms. The lower level, largely untouched since the building's construction, except for electricity being added, served as the dressing area for the various opera stars and performers in the building's original incarnation.

A hotspot of activity, The Cinnamon Stick plays host to musicians, artists, and performers on a weekly basis as well as to customers ranging in age from high school kids to senior citizens. The location, 151 W. Main Street in Downtown Batesville, is surrounded by various amenities. Currently there are three restaurants on the street; The Cinnamon Stick, Elizabeth's, and The Greasy Spoon. These three offer a variety of food and if that were not enough, various other restaurants are within a 1-5 mile radius of the location. Various antique stores, an used book store, a gym, and various other types of businesses line Batesville's historic downtown area.

Virgil Finlay!

Inside, it’s packed with great articles about, and fiction from, the pulps,  including:

BLUE BOOK—THE SLICK IN PULP CLOTHING by Mike Ashley
This in-depth look at Blue Book is the most detailed article ever on one of the longest lived and important pulps.
In this 21,000 word essay, Mike Ashley explores the history of Blue Book, from its first issue to its final one nearly 70 years later.
Covering a span of 613 issues, this is the definitive study of Blue Book. Profusely illustrated.

THE STRANGE STORIES THAT NEVER WAS by Robert Weinberg
When the fantasy pulp, Strange Stories, folded after its unlucky thirteenth issue, several manuscripts remained in the inventory.
Most eventually saw print in other pulps of the Thrilling chain, such as Thrilling Mystery and Thrilling Adventure.
Robert Weinberg dons his pulp detective hat to track down those stories which, had the magazine continued,
would have made up the next few issues of Strange Stories.

THE THRILL BOOK STORY by Will Murray
One of the scarcest of all pulp titles, few magazines have the aura that legendary The Thrill Book does.
In a lengthy article, Will Murray sheds light on this unique experiment from Street & Smith,
claimed incorrectly by some to be the first fantasy pulp. Illustrated with every cover from this rare pulp.

THE SAGA OF SINGAPORE SAMMY by Rick Lai
Pulp author George Worts created several memorable series characters, among them Peter the Brazen and Gillian Hazeltine.
One of his longest running series concerned South Seas adventure Sam Shea, also known throughout the Orient as Singapore Sammy,
which saw print in Argosy and Short Stories,. His life and adventures are examined here in detail, including a complete chronology.

Here is the final installment of his reminisces about the pulps, written shortly before he passed away.

THE OUTSIDER AND NO OTHERS by Robert Barbour Johnson
Johnson was a regular contributor to Weird Tales in the 1930s and 1940s, and his “Far Below” is considered a classic.
This is his account of his Weird Tales career, written in the 1970s and intended for
Robert Weinberg’s pulp fanzine, Pulp, but published now for the first time.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF GLORY! by J. Edward Leithead
Leithead was one of the leading western pulp writers during the 1920s and 1930s, contributing to the Clayton, Street & Smith and Wyn western pulps, among others. In 1967, he penned an account of his pulp career. Little seen by those in pulp fandom, it’s a fascinating inside look at the pulp world!

FRANKLYN E. HAMILTON by Link Hullar
Frank Hamilton’s wonderful art is known to pulp fans the world around.
His friend Link Hullar contributes an appreciation of pulp fandom’s leading artist, accompanied by several of Frank’s masterful drawings,
appearing here for the first time.

COVERING THE MAN OF BRONZE by Doug Klauba and
ILLUSTRATING THE DOC SAVAGE RADIO SCRIPTS by Tom Roberts
The long awaiting Doc Savage radio scripts finally saw print from Moonstone Books.

The Adventures of Frank Merriwell, Volume 2

When we consider the great pulp characters of the past, we tend to think of the top heroes of the 1930s: Doc Savage, The Shadow, The Spider, and the other larger than life figures that captivated our imaginations. But decades before these crimefighters came on the scene, another character was filling the imaginations of millions of avid readers and inspiring them to follow his example.

The late nineteenth century marked the true beginnings of the pulp era, thanks to the introduction of "dime novels" - an inexpensive mix of newspaper and magazine that specialized in attention grabbing stories that always left readers wanting more. Aimed directly at American youth, many of the stories emphasized that, with a combination of pluck, dedication, and clean living, any American boy or girl could rise to any height that they chose - and indeed, become a hero themselves.

In the winter of 1895, a writer named Gilbert Patten created such a character for a new magazine called "Tip Top Library". His publisher, Street and Smith, had instructed him to give his new hero admirable attributes like good looks, intelligence, good sportsmanship, ethics, and an outgoing personality - and so, based on these standards of excellence, Frank Merriwell was born.

The first Merriwell story appeared the following spring and was an instant success with readers. Thanks to Patten's exciting, fast-paced writing style, the characters of Frank Merriwell and his friends Bart Hodge and Inza Burridge quickly became an institution; Street and Smith published their adventures for nearly two decades and an enduring literary legend was born.

After World War II, when the stories were largely a nostalgic part of the past, many of Merriwell's readers retained a lingering fondness for this role model of their youth. Recognizing this, the National Broadcasting Company decided to reintroduce him to a contemporary audience. And so, in the fall of 1946, "The Adventures of Frank Merriwell" returned in a half-hour series of weekly radio adventures. Broadcast from New York, the new series starred Lawson Zerbe as Frank, with Hal Studer as his pal Bart Hodge and Elaine Rost as his girlfriend, Inza Burridge. NBC chose to make the series a period piece and, like many of the original stories, the programs were written as mini-mysteries - fast-paced tales in which Frank, Bart, and Inza investigated mysterious happenings, robberies, and underhanded deeds. True to its origins, each program subtly emphasized that success and popularity were best obtained through good sportsmanship, academic study, and athletic achievement. Thus, Merriwell and his cohorts continued to be the sort of positive role models they had been for half a century.

Heard today, "The Adventures of Frank Merriwell" may well remind you of the mystery stories of your own youth, reminiscent of characters like the Hardy Boys, the Three Adventurers, or Encyclopedia Brown. Priced at just $20.98, "The Adventures of Frank Merriwell, Volume 2" is a seven-hour CD set from RadioArchives.com that features fourteen exciting and original stories. It's a collection you'll want to add to your personal library right away - and be sure to share these wholesome and inspiring tales with your children and grandchildren too!

Tom Johnson: STARSHIP INVASIONS - Now available!

Barbara Custer and Tom Johnson bring their respective experiences to the printed page, blending it into tales of intergalactic adventure.

Johnson introduces us to Eddy Edwards, a UFO hunter searching for alien life. In the process he meets Stuanofu, the pilot of a flying saucer! Plus, return to the 1940s, when three young men discover that dinosaurs have found an opening to the world above. Can they be returned to Earth’s hidden pocket?

Custer’s characters live in a world where a person must have a job and health insurance; otherwise they forfeit the right to medical treatment. All of them struggle with painful pasts as they compete in cutthroat work environments. They must seek help from aliens when an exploding star threatens to incinerate the earth. These aliens challenge their world views, and the lessons come hard when they learn that sometimes humans make the worst enemies.
