AudioComics
Craig Neibaur to voice The Green Lama!

The AudioComics Company is pleased to announce the casting of San Francisco Bay Area stage actor Craig Neibaur in the title role of The Green Lama, part of the production company’s classic pulp audio series.

Neibaur will portray Kendell Foster Crossen’s famed pulp crime-fighter in a brand new series of audio adventures set in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The alter-ego of millionaire Jethro Dumont, The Green Lama is both a detective endowed with superhuman powers through his knowledge of “radioactive salts,” and a practicing Buddhist, utilizing the basic doctrines through his war on crime. The Green Lama is only one of several of Dumont’s identities, his others being the Buddhist priest Dr Pali and adventurer Hugh Gilmore.

Craig Neibaur has graced stages in the San Francisco Bay Area for almost twenty years; after coming to grips with the fact that he was an actor and not a biology major, Craig graduated from San Francisco State University with his Bachelors in Theater and an eclectic body of work that included the classics and modern works. He has continued to work regularly with Berkeley Rep, Encore Theatre, and Bay Area TheatreSports (and its offshoot, True Fiction Magazine) on the West Coast premieres of Five Flights; Silence; Norton I; and The Lonesome West. He has been a core member of Porchlight Theater Company since 2006, appearing with them in Heartbreak House, Ideal Husband, and Under Milk Wood. Not only is Craig an actor but by day a certified massage therapist through his business “Massage for the Arts,” where he donates 10% of all proceeds to not-for-profit local theaters.

Director Lance Roger Axt: “As far as we are concerned, Craig is the Green Lama, hands down. I knew exactly who should play Jet Dumont the minute I started reading the classic Double Detective stories; I heard Craig’s voice in my head, and that was that. I’ve known Craig for many years now, and I know what he can bring to the role. Believe me, it will be a pleasure to work with him on this.”

The Green Lama first appeared in the pages of the pulp magazine Double Detective from 1940 to 1943 while simultaneously appearing in Prize Comics in stories that bridged the lines between crime drama and supernatural mystery, He then moved to his own title, The Green Lama published by Spark Publications, in stories that were more superhero in nature, although the scripts were still written by Crossen. More recently the Lama has reappeared in numerous series from publishers ranging from AC Comics to Dynamite Entertainment to Airship 27.

Three years after the demise of his comic series, the character returned for a short-lived CBS radio series in 1949, with the voice-over provided by the legendary Paul Frees, thus making Craig Neibaur the second actor in radio history to don the hood of The Green Lama. The Lama’s new audio adventures record this fall in San Francisco, CA.

Bill Blackbeard: April 28, 1926 – March 10, 2011
It was reported April 25 that comic strip historian and archivist Bill Blackbeard died March 10 in a northern California nursing home. He was 84.
Born in Lawrence, Ind., Blackbeard and his family moved to California when Blackbeard was still a child. There, his passion for newspaper strip collecting took off when, at the age of 12, he discovered a neighbor's garage packed with thousands of old newspapers, whose colorful Sunday sections caught his eye. Blackbeard was given the papers by the neighbor who wanted to clear them out of his garage, a familiar theme that would keep Blackbeard's collection growing in future years.

As a freelance writer, Blackbeard wrote, edited or contributed to more than 200 books on cartoons and comic strips, including the Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics (1977), 100 Years of Comic Strips, the Krazy & Ignatz series (Eclipse/Fantagraphics) and NBM's 18-volume Wash Tubbs and Captain Easy.

Finding that libraries were discarding bound newspapers after microfilming, he established the San Francisco Academy of Comic Art in 1968 as a non-profit organization and began collecting newspapers from California libraries, expanding his scope to institutions nationwide. Following three decades of acquisition, accumulating some 75 tons of material, he turned the SFACA Collection over to Ohio State University's Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, where it is available for research.

James Bond - Return to theaters on November 9, 2012!
Sony Pictures Entertainment has reached an agreement with post-bankruptcy MGM to co-finance, market and distribute the revived twenty-third James Bond film (officially Bond 23 until it receives its actual title), the companies have announced. MGM Co-Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum and Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton and Co-Chairman Amy Pascal made the announcement.

Sony will release film on November 9, 2012. Sony Pictures will also co-finance and distribute Bond 24 as well.
The two studios collaborated on the two previous 007 movies, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, as well as other projects.

Daniel Craig will be returning as the legendary British secret agent, with Sam Mendes directing a screenplay written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan.

James Rollins: JAKE RANSOM AND THE HOWLING SPHINX
Arriving in book stores May 3rd!
Using his father's watch as a key, Jake intends to return to Calypsos. Instead he's thrust into a strange desert land where he's joined by his friends Marika, Pindor, and Bach'uuk and his sister, Kady. As they try to figure out what to do next, a surprise attack by the beautiful young Princess Nefertiti takes them all captive.

Soon even she is battling the Skull King's minions. For Jake has something the Skull King wants—a prize that will give its owner awesome power, including control of the fearsome Howling Sphinx. In a new pounding adventure, Jake races against time to outfight and outwit Kalverum Rex, knowing that if the Skull King wins, he'll be unstoppable.

Filled with unexpected danger, challenging puzzles, and dazzling action, this is a first-rate, fast-paced thriller—a read only James Rollins could have created!

As a youth, James Rollins had acquired an extensive collection of Doc Savage novels, but, he says, he remained oblivious to their influence on him as a novelist until one of his fans brought this matter to his attention. The Jake Ransom series is inspired by Doc Savage and his attempt to craft a modern pulp story.

Kim Williamson: THE OVERMAN PARADIGM Book 1 - Now available!
THE OVERMAN PARADIGM is Book 1 of a projected series about the appearance of superhumans and the effects of their appearance on society following the arrival of an alien in 1942. Everything that follows happens as a result -- directly or indirectly -- as a result of the alien's appearance.

The literary or thematic premise (as opposed to the plot premise) is what if Superman and the other early superheroes had never existed in comics? How different might superheroes have developed without his archetype to follow? The book is a collection of short stories -- written in a pulp style -- that interweave, with some stories building on earlier ones. A mystery underlies the book, which will be fully revealed and solved in Book 2, CALL TO ARMS.  Early readers spotted some of the mystery, but not all of it.

Radio Archives Announces Pulp Audiobook Series - Update!
New Audio Production Division Will Do Doc Savage, the Spider, and Secret Agent "X"

Radio Archives has announced a new series of audiobooks, based on favorite pulp novels of the 1930s and 1940s. The audiobooks will begin Radio Archives' new line of original audio productions based on classic pulp fiction.

The first series of audiobooks will be the seven Doc Savage novels penned by pulp author and Doc Savage authority Will Murray, featuring cover art by Joe DeVito. Future series will include the exploits of pulp heroes The Spider and Secret Agent "X", as well as other pulp fiction properties. The new audio productions will utilize the talents of some of the top voice actors and recording talents in the United States. The first audiobook release is scheduled for June 2011.

"We're thrilled to have Will Murray's excellent Doc Savage novels as the lead-off offerings in this exciting new series," said Harlan Zinck, president of Radio Archives. "The audiobooks and other new audio productions will nicely complement our classic radio and pulp reprint offerings."

Murray's Doc Savage stories were published in the 1990's and were the first new Doc Savage stories in more than 40 years. "Creating audiobooks of these extensions of the Doc Savage canon brings a new dimension to this classic pulp character," Murray said.

The new audiobook line, which will be recorded and released in digital stereo, will be produced and directed by audio producer Roger Rittner, who created The Adventures of Doc Savage full-cast radio series, available in a deluxe CD set from Radio Archives. "I'm delighted to be able to bring the superb quality of Radio Archives productions to these exciting stories," said Rittner, who has a 30-year history of both recorded and live classic radio and audio productions.

Radio Archives
is a manufacturer and distributor of fully restored old time radio programs and pulp fiction reprints.

For further information, as well to inquire about retail opportunities, contact Harlan Zinck at (800) 886-0551 or via e-mail at Service@RadioArchives.com

Update:  Will Murray reports that recording of PYTHON ISLE began on April 22nd and wrapped on April 23rd. Roger Rittner told Will that voice actor Michael Macconnohie did a fabulous job. Macconnohie was chosen because he played several roles in the 1985 Adventures of Doc Savage radio series. Radio Archives will release PYTHON ISLE in June.Taping of WHITE EYES will take place this weekend. A July release is planned. After that will come the first Spider audiobook.

Yellowed Perils - New blog post!
William Lampkin written up an interview with the editor of a new, more dramatic version of "Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze."

It's his second attempt to fix the 1975 film. We showed his first try — "Doc SaLvageD" — at Doc Con X. Nice try, but still not a great movie. A draft of his new edit — "Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze — DeTarnished" — does quite a good job of turning the movie into an adventure film — rather than a campy flick.  He's hoping to post a final version of the re-edited film soon.

Radio Archives - Now available!
Philo Vance, Volume 4
When we think of radio's detective shows, we tend to think of the film noir adventures of such great names as Phillip Marlowe and Johnny Dollar. But not all of radio's criminal investigators came dressed in gumshoes and rumpled trench coats. In fact, one of the most popular and long-running series featured a detective who was something of a well-pressed dandy - and his name was Philo Vance.

Vance first appeared in a series of novels written by S. S. Van Dine. In the books, Vance was portrayed as a stylish fop, a New York bon vivant with a highly intellectual bent - and a nose-in-the-air attitude to match. But by the time he hit the airwaves in a syndicated series for the Frederick Ziv Company, he was far less a know-it-all and far more down to earth. As portrayed by radio veteran Jackson Beck, Vance was knowledgeable but accessible, working closely with the police to solve their most baffling crimes. He was an expert investigator, with a sharp eye for detail and a second sense that could quickly see through shaky alibis and questionable testimony.

For listeners who enjoyed being armchair detectives, the series offered an extra bonus: in traditional whodunit fashion, at the end of each show, Vance would usually gather the suspects, restate all of the clues, and then pause a moment before announcing the name of the person responsible for the crime. This subtle little feature, along with excellent performances by the cream of the New York radio world, resulted in a series that would be popular on radio stations throughout the country for many, many years.

If you're looking for truly enjoyable audio entertainment - and particularly if you love being an armchair detective yourself - you can't go wrong with "Philo Vance, Volume 4", another great sounding compact disc collection from RadioArchives.com. New Audio Production Division
Will Do Doc Savage, the Spider, and
Secret Agent "X"

Spokane, Wash., April 15, 2011 -  Radio Archives today announced a new series of audiobooks, based on favorite pulp novels of the 1930s and 1940s.

THE DARKLAND
NEW SCI-FI THRILLER FROM AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS & CORNERSTONE BOOK PUBLISHERS

From Andrew Salmon, the acclaimed author of the “The Light of Men,”
comes another gripping science fiction novel.

In the not too distant future, Earth is ravaged by a series of natural disasters that have decimated the population. To rebuild mankind, science has begun human cloning. They are created from the DNA of police officers and fire fighters; the goal, to establish a new cadre of selfless guardians to protect the fragile remains of humanity.

Clones are grown with the memories of past lives erased so that they don’t have to carry around the baggage of lost tragedies. But something is wrong with C-Peter Reilly, grown from the cells of a Vancouver detective. He has memories of his first life, of his wife and children and the world before the devastation.  Such information is taboo and should his secret be discovered, he would instantly be mind-wiped. Reilly must keep his painful memories to himself while coping mentally and physically with his “second” life.

Praise for THE DARK LAND.  “Andrew Salmon has done it again. ‘The Dark Land’ is an excellent blend of noir crime fiction and hard SF, with the unmistakable spice of the classic pulp spirit. Plus which Salmon

raises moral questions, and does not provide pat answers for them. This is a rare novel that both entertains readers, and makes them think as well.”  Charles Saunders (Author of popular Imaro series.)

Radio Archives: THE UNEXPECTED Volume 1 - Now available!
Fifty years from now, should some intrepid archaeologist happen to come across a stack of radio and movie scripts from the postwar years, he or she is bound to end up with an interesting take on our culture. It's likely, in fact, that American society circa 1947 will be interpreted as paranoid, suspicious, and steeped in fear and dread.

It won't be a true assessment, of course, but if you were to see our culture strictly through the eyes of popular entertainment of the time, it would be easy to understand why someone might believe it. Many of the more popular movies were certainly dark - film noir classics that stressed fear and an ever-present undercurrent of dread and uncertainty. Radio, too, gave us its share of paranoia, with the Shadow clouding men's minds and the Whistler "knowing the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak". And if, in that pile of crumbling paper, that archaeologist happens upon scripts for a little-known radio series titled "The Unexpected", his or her impression of a society in psychological crisis would be even more certain.

"The Unexpected" was a quarter-hour radio series produced by Hamilton-Whitney Productions. Like many syndicated shows of the time, the series chose its stars from the rank and file of both radio and motion pictures. Unlike big-time network dramatic shows, of course, Hamilton-Whitney couldn't afford the price tags attached to "A" list celebrities - but this actually proved beneficial, since busy character actors like Barry Sullivan, Jack Holt, and Marsha Hunt were used to playing a multitude of parts with little preparation and performers like Lurene Tuttle, who specialized in radio, could credibly play most any part after one or two read-thrus. The budgets may have been small but, thanks to experienced hands both before and behind the microphone, the results were impressive.

Then as now, every show that wished to be successful had to have some sort of a hook - a gimmick, if you will - that differentiated it from the rest of the pack. In the case of "The Unexpected", the series specialized in tense stories of mystery and suspense, usually centering on the thoughts or actions of a single person. A husband loses patience with his nattering wife and decides to do away with her; an ex-con finds himself blackmailed by a fellow inmate; a self-centered debutante carefully plans her break-up with her fiancé - all were simple but engaging plots for this enterprising series. But the fascinating thing about the shows, the "hook" which was designed to attract and retain the interest of listeners, was the twist ending that came with each program. You'd be listening along to the story and then, just about the time the plot was being resolved, the program's announcer would say "You think the story is over, don't you? But wait! Fate takes a hand. Wait...for the unexpected!" Well, after that, what could a poor listener do but sit thru the commercial that followed to find out the REAL ending to the tale?

For mystery fans, "The Unexpected" is a real discovery - and it's a show that that even the most avid of radio buffs has never even heard of, let alone heard. Radio Archives is excited to bring this series back for the enjoyment of a whole new generation of listeners. Transferred directly from original transcription recordings and fully restored for sparkling audio fidelity, "The Unexpected" is a series we know you'll find as fascinating and entertaining as we do. This 5-CD collection, now available for just $14.95 from RadioArchives.com, offers you the first twenty shows in the series, with such additional guest stars as Tom Neal, Lyle Talbot, Binnie Barnes, and Jackie Cooper.

Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy - Coming in June!
2012 sees the centennial anniversary of the publication of Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. As part of the run-up to this milestone, Andy Briggs has been writing a new series of Tarzan books, the first of which, Tarzan: the Legacy of Greystoke, is due to be published in June 2011 by Faber & Faber.

Set in modern Africa, Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy follows a re-imagined Tarzan who is edgier, untamed and feral while remaining the iconic hero, raised by apes and protector of the wild. Among the 21st-century difficulties the new Tarzan will face: warring guerrillas, poaching of endangered animals, illegal logging and the decline of the environment. The story's original characters will appear in slightly different form: Jane is a 14-year-old girl accustomed to technology, Robert Canler is a runaway with a mysterious past, and cannibal tribes are replaced by rebel guerrillas.

Synopsis: What lies in the depths of the jungle? Escaping a dark secret, Robbie Canler joins an illegal logging team in the Congo jungle. Now they"re under siege from a sinister force. When the daughter of the camp's boss, Jane Porter, goes missing they assume bloodthirsty rebel soldiers have kidnapped her. Robbie sets out on a rescue mission - unaware he is being watched...Are the rumours of a feral man raised by wild apes true? If so, can the mysterious untamed savage be trusted to help them?

By William Patrick Maynard
Michael Knox is the brash and arrogant assistant of renowned archaeologist Dr. Spiridon Simos. A chance encounter with a beautiful Egyptian woman at Dr. Simos' wedding in Corfu leads the young man on a whirlwind journey to Cairo where he barely survives the terrifying reincarnation of the ancient Pharaoh Khunum-Khufu.

A chain of events quickly unfold that embroils Knox with obsessive British agent, Sir Denis Nayland Smith, and his pursuit of the master criminal, Dr. Fu Manchu. Slowly, the young man begins to piece together the threat posed to the world as Fu Manchu and his seductive, but sadistic daughter Koreani tear the dread secret society, the Si-Fan, apart.

Before Michael Knox can act on the intelligence in his possession, he must first survive death in a myriad of strange guises from a savage gorilla trained to crush a man's spine to the unrelenting pursuit of Margarita, the disarming dwarf assassin who brings terror to the Orient Express, to one thousand poisonous butterflies unleashed at the Munich Conference as Europe teeters on the brink of a Second World War.

As madness sweeps the globe, one hedonistic young man must examine his own life as he realizes the world's future hangs in the balance. The Special Collections Research Center's (SCRC) new exhibition opens this week. Orange Pulp: The Pulp Magazine and Contemporary Culture showcases the university's world-class collection of pulp magazines and pulp paintings--starting with the acquisition of the Street and Smith archive in 1967 and continuing through the acquisitions of the A. A. Wyn (Ace Books), Hugo Gernsback, and Forrest J Ackerman collections. Further, the exhibit examines pulp culture by re-creating the worlds of the publishers, writers, artists, and readers who promulgated it. The exhibit, which spans two locations, will be available from January 25th until June 17. On display in the sixth-floor SCRC gallery will be pulp magazines, notably titles like Weird Tales and Amazing Stories; the typescript of Isaac Asimov's "Strange Playfellow," which introduced readers to one of science fiction's best known characters, Robbie the Robot; and correspondence with figures like Ray Bradbury. Across the desolate planet Tulon moves a solitary figure. Jack Brand, former officer in the Tulon Security Force, is on a search. Seven years ago, he led a tactical squad that included his sister, Terry, into a deadly ambush in the desert. The Wilkersons, a Nomad gang who robbed a Trans-Exxon payroll, wiped out four members of his unit, kidnapped Terry, and left Brand for dead. Brand recovered from his wounds, and swore he would never leave Tulon until he found his sister.

PULP VAULT #14 - Now available!
Copies will be available at the Windy City Convention next week!

AFTER A 15 YEAR HIATUS, THE LEGENDARY PULP FANZINE, PULP VAULT
RETURNS WITH ITS LARGEST AND BEST ISSUE YET!

With contributions by Robert Weinberg, Mike Ashley, Will Murray,
David Saunders, Hugh B. Cave, and others!
Sure to be a must-have edition.

Clocking in at over 250 pages, lavishly illustrated, Pulp Vault no. 14
begins with a never before published full color cover by pulp great
Virgil Finlay!

Inside, it’s packed with great articles about, and fiction from, the pulps,  including:

BLUE BOOK—THE SLICK IN PULP CLOTHING by Mike Ashley
This in-depth look at Blue Book is the most detailed article ever on one of the longest lived and important pulps. In this 21,000 word essay, Mike Ashley explores the history of Blue Book, from its first issue to its final one nearly 70 years later. Covering a span of 613 issues, this is the definitive study of Blue Book. Profusely illustrated.

THE STRANGE STORIES THAT NEVER WAS by Robert Weinberg
When the fantasy pulp, Strange Stories, folded after its unlucky thirteenth issue, several manuscripts remained in the inventory. Most eventually saw print in other pulps of the Thrilling chain, such as Thrilling Mystery and Thrilling Adventure. Robert Weinberg dons his pulp detective hat to track down those stories which, had the magazine continued, would have made up the next few issues of Strange Stories.

THE THRILL BOOK STORY by Will Murray
One of the scarcest of all pulp titles, few magazines have the aura that legendary The Thrill Book does. In a lengthy article, Will Murray sheds light on this unique experiment from Street & Smith, claimed incorrectly by some to be the first fantasy pulp. Illustrated with every cover from this rare pulp.

THE SAGA OF SINGAPORE SAMMY by Rick Lai
Pulp author George Worts created several memorable series characters, among them Peter the Brazen and Gillian Hazeltine. One of his longest running series concerned South Seas adventure Sam Shea, also known throughout the Orient as Singapore Sammy, which saw print in Argosy and Short Stories,. His life and adventures are examined here in detail, including a complete chronology.
ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF NORMAN SAUNDERS by David Saunders
The son of one of pulpdom’s greatest artists, Norman Saunders, looks back at his father’s life and career.

INTRODUCING CYRUS NORTH by D.H. Olson
A detailed study of Donald Wandrei’s scientific detective, Cyrus North, who appeared in Clues Detective Magazine between 1938 and 1939.

ONE OLD-TIMER’S VIEW OF THE PULPS by Hugh B. Cave
One of the giants of the pulp field, Hugh B. Cave penned several articles for Pulp Vault. Here is the final installment of his reminisces about the pulps, written shortly before he passed away.

THE OUTSIDER AND NO OTHERS by Robert Barbour Johnson
Johnson was a regular contributor to Weird Tales in the 1930s and 1940s, and his “Far Below” is considered a classic. This is his account of his Weird Tales career, written in the 1970s and intended for Robert Weinberg’s pulp fanzine, Pulp, but published now for the first time.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF GLORY! by J. Edward Leithead
Leithead was one of the leading western pulp writers during the 1920s and 1930s, contributing to the Clayton, Street & Smith and Wyn western pulps, among others. In 1967, he penned an account of his pulp career. Little seen by those in pulp fandom, it’s a fascinating inside look at the pulp world!

FRANKLYN E. HAMILTON by Link Hullar
Frank Hamilton’s wonderful art is known to pulp fans the world around. His friend Link Hullar contributes an appreciation of pulp fandom’s leading artist, accompanied by several of Frank’s masterful drawings, appearing here for the first time.

COVERING THE MAN OF BRONZE by Doug Klauba and
ILLUSTRATING THE DOC SAVAGE RADIO SCRIPTS by Tom Roberts
The long awaiting Doc Savage radio scripts finally saw print from Moonstone Books. The two illustrators for the project discuss the assignment and how they approached this unique opportunity. Accompanied by preliminary sketches and studies of their Doc Savage work.

THE SPLENDOR OF ASIA by L. Adams Beck
Reprinted from the September 7, 1922 issue of The Popular Magazine, “The Splendor of Asia” is a complete adventure-packed novel set high in the snowy passes of the Himalayan mountains. Lost cities, fabled treasures, the hideous Things that Run—what more could one want from a pulp novel?

THE FLAMING SKULL by Hugh B. Cave
One of Cave’s favorite jungle tales, and one which has never before been reprinted. This long novelette originally appeared in Popular Fiction, November 1931.

THE GIANT AND THE DINOSAUR by Donald Wandrei
Wandrei’s scientific detective, Cyrus North, appeared in 6 issues of Clues Detective Magazine between 1938 and 1939. Here, for the first time, is a previously unpublished North novelette—his strangest adventure ever!

PLUS MORE!
Other articles by SF/comic great Otto Binder on one of early SF fandom’s great trips, never-before-seen photos from the 1939 World Science Fiction Convention in New York, and an index to the rare pulp, Fighting Romances from the West and East! And art by Kevin Duncan and David Saunders!

The Shadow: The History and Mystery of the Radio Program, 1930-54
Written by Martin Grams, Jr., author of THE GREEN HORNET:
A HISTORY OF RADIO, MOTION PICTURES, COMICS, AND TELEVISION
Release date - April 8th!

THE SHADOW -- for the consideration of those who never heard a radio broadcast or read a pulp magazine -- was a supernatural sleuth with a sepulchral chuckle. A detective whose success in tracking down criminals became a popular long-running radio program from 1937 to 1954, after beginning a number of years before as a ghost-like voice introducing a bone-chilling murder play that concluded with a sinister laugh. The program, DETECTIVE STORY MAGAZINE HOUR, premiered in July of 1930 and within a few months, the horror host overshadowed the crime stories, and spawned his own magazine. Ultimately, the pulp stories ceased in 1949 but the radio program out-lasted the magazine for an additional five years.

This 820-page book (authorized through Conde Nast) documents the entire history of the long-running radio program, with rare never-before-seen photographs, interviews with cast and crew, and a carefully organized presentation of the facts. Numerous unexplored aspects of The Shadow are revealed, such as when The Shadow unmasked in the summer of 1931 on stage in St. Louis, the 1935 MacGrgeor & Sollie transcription discs, Jack Benny spoofs (including one that never made it to the air), the department store manager who was mistaken by the kids in the neighborhood of being The Shadow and hid for that particular half-hour so he wouldn't disillusion the children, pulp novels adapted for the radio program, and much more! Through extensive research of original radio scripts, newspapers on microfilm and various archives across the country, this book is sure to please both casual and devoted fans of THE SHADOW.

An extensive episode guide with plot summaries and an index enhance the book's appeal.

"For those who first heard THE SHADOW on the air when radio was young, this book will bring back memories. For those too young to remember the radio show, this is a wonderful introduction. For the collector and historian of old-time radio, there are facts here they may be seeing for the first time. For everyone else, this is a book to treasure."  -- J. Randolph Cox, Editor, DIME NOVEL ROUND-UP

"There are historians and authors who, from time to time, have been quoted on internet message boards, staged panels at conventions and magazine articles -- all borrowing the scholarship of Martin Grams," remarks Terry Salomonson of Audio Classics. "I know for a fact that in the past year, two historians were paid to do write-ups for their magazines, because of their name status, and the editors were unaware that most of the information in those articles [originated from] Martin's books and or phone calls and emails they placed to Martin."

The suggested retail price is $29.95.

Age of Aces - Now available!

"The Iron Ace" by William E. Barrett
In the Misty Skies of WWI France, history is written with flaming guns! And Yank airman Hugh McQuillen had smashed his way into those history books as "The Iron Ace."

Assigned as the C.O. of a Royal Flying Corps squadron, and prowling the skies in his deadly war plane adorned with the Laughing Skull, he was a grim and unrelenting instrument of war who killed Germans with such ruthless efficiency that he became known on both sides of the line as "The Assassin." McQuillen believed there was no decent way to bring men to a violent end, so he would not bow to the "chivalry of the air" practiced by his R.F.C. mates and the Germans. This made the Iron Ace a marked man, and his enemies would stop at nothing to bring an end to his savage reign.

Written by William E. Barrett, the nine tales of "The Iron Ace" appeared in Sky Birds magazine from 1933 through 1934. Barrett is best remembered for his novels, The Left Hand of God and The Lillies of the Field. But he was initially a very busy writer for the pulp magazines. And while much of his work was in the air war mags, he also contributed to the western and detective pulps. One of Barrett's most popular characters appeared in a series of stories in Dime Detective. "Needle Mike" was an undercover crime fighter who posed a s a tattoo artist.

VOYAGE TO VENUS by Achille Eyraud, adapted by Brian Stableford
Published the same year as Jules Verne's classic From the Earth to the Moon and Henri de Parville's An Inhabitant of the Planet Mars, Achille Eyraud's Voyage to Venus (1865) was the first novel to describe an interplanetary rocket-powered spaceship. Eyraud supports his design with an elaborate (but ultimately flawed) pseudo-scientific argument and describes its cosmic voyage in a logical manner. Once on Venus, his protagonists discover a utopian society in which the sexes are equal and solar-powered robots toil in the fields.

RADIO-TERROR by Eugene Thébault, adapted by Fletcher Pratt
The mad Marquis de Saint-Imier attempts to blackmail France and install a reign of mass terror through his control of atomic forces and electromagnetic waves. But against him stand the indomitable Professor Mazelier and his assistant Monsieur Gribal. Who will prevail in the ultimate battle against the Radio-Terror?

Eugène Thébault's Radio-Terror (1929) had the honor of being one of the very few French works selected by Hugo Gernsback to be translated by none other than Fletcher Pratt, the well-known author of The Well of the Unicorn, and it was published in 1933 in Wonder Stories.

This new edition includes Frank R. Paul's original illustrations.

THE VAMPIRE LORD RUTHWEN by Cyprien Bérard, adapted by Brian Stableford
The mysterious Lord Ruthwen travels to Venice and strikes again, killing the beautiful Bettina and torturing her lover, Léonti, who swears to avenge her. He joins vampire hunters Aubrey and Nadoor Ali to search for the elusive monster...

Cyprien Bérard's The Vampire Lord Ruthwen (1820) was the first sequel to continue John-William Polidori's 1819 ground-breaking story that had introduced the character of the handsome, but evil Vampire lord. Also drawing upon The Thousand and One Nights for inspiration, Bérard weaves stories of mystical Venice, Arabian Nights and Vampire legends into one exotic and suspenseful tale of revenge against the Undead.

"A significant stepping-stone in the evolution of the modern image of the vampire, foreshadowing the other major thread of subsequent vampire fiction: the seductive female vampire." Brian Stableford.

Blood ‘n’ Thunder #28 (Winter 2011)
Now shipping to retailers and subscribers!

The latest issue of Blood ‘n’ Thunder has just been shipped to subscribers and is now available for single-copy purchase. It offers two articles for Doc Savage fans: one covers the 1985 Doc radio series broadcast over National Public Radio, the other reveals sources used (and even plagiarized) by primary series author Lester Dent while writing about the exotic locales in Doc's adventures. A lengthy and detailed piece by Robert O. Erisman, editor of the pulp line published by Marvel Comics owner Martin Goodman, explains how to build a salable pulp story “brick by brick.” BnT editor Ed Hulse writes about Patria, the 1917 movie serial that sparked an international incident. Gary Lovisi and Mark Trost contribute pulp and paperback reviews, and the little-known 1940 comic-book story featuring a thinly disguised Captain Future (renamed Major Mars) is reprinted for the first time anywhere.

With this issue Blood ‘n’ Thunder returns to a quarterly publication schedule, so the price of yearly subscriptions has increased to $40 postpaid—but that’s still 30 percent less than it would cost to buy the four issues separately.

Single copies are available at $11.95 from Ed Hulse at 2467 Route 10, Bldg. 15, Apt. 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.  Ed also takes payments via Paypal at bnteditor@yahoo.com.

THE DESTINY OF FU MANCHU - Coming in December!

The action moves swiftly from Greece to Egypt to Africa to Europe in a breathtaking battle of ideologies as Sax Rohmer's infamous creation seeks to realize THE DESTINY OF FU MANCHU...

HOBO STORIES By Patrick & Terence Casey
6x9-inch perfect bound; 332 pages, $20.00 postpaid
Introduction by John Locke

Hobos spoke their own language, lived by their own code. Veterans of the road enslaved younger runaways, to use them as servants, to dispatch their innocent faces to back doors to beg. True hobos scorned brethren who accepted work instead of handouts. To do nothing, to pay nothing, was the hobo dream, the true measure of freedom, the true test of authenticity.

Patrick and Terence Casey wrote five stories set in Hoboland--that is, the backroads, railyards, and seedy hobo jungles of America where tramps traveled and congregated. The initial story appeared in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST (1914), the remainder in the leading pulp ADVENTURE (1916-21). Together, they constitute a grand saga of life in a strange, often violent underworld of yesteryear. HOBO STORIES collects the series.

The amazing Caseys . . . they were two brothers from San Francisco who sold regularly to the pulps as teenagers. Soon thereafter, they conned their way into the prestigious pages of ADVENTURE with tales of actual jungles--in Borneo and Central America. Included in HOBO STORIES is a biography of the Caseys, an examination of the roots of their hobo fiction, and, from the pulp ROMANCE (1920), their revelatory short story about the adventures of a teenage pulp writer.

PULP ARK - May 13-15, 2011!
PULP ARK, the Pulp Convention/Creators' Conference debuting May 13-15, 2011 in Batesville, AR, is proud to announce that the event will be held in a location that is a primary part of local history in the historic Arkansas town. Built in 1880, the three story building that will be the home of the first PULP ARK enjoyed life as Batesville's Opera House for eight years. It was renovated and made into a mercantile store after that and then later was home to various other enterprises. It currently houses THE CINNAMON STICK, a coffee and sandwich restaurant. The over 6,000 square feet of space provides not only ample places for tables, displays and guests, but access to the lower level provides an onsite location for panels and classrooms. The lower level, largely untouched since the building's construction, except for electricity being added, served as the dressing area for the various opera stars and performers in the building's original incarnation.

A hotspot of activity, The Cinnamon Stick plays host to musicians, artists, and performers on a weekly basis as well as to customers ranging in age from high school kids to senior citizens. The location, 151 W. Main Street in Downtown Batesville, is surrounded by various amenities. Currently there are three restaurants on the street; The Cinnamon Stick, Elizabeth's, and The Greasy Spoon. These three offer a variety of food and if that were not enough, various other restaurants are within a 1-5 mile radius of the location. Various antique stores, an used book store, a gym, and various other types of businesses line Batesville's historic downtown area.

PULP VAULT #14 - Coming Mid-April!

Robert Weinberg dons his pulp detective hat to track down those stories which, had the magazine continued,
would have made up the next few issues of Strange Stories.

THE THRILL BOOK STORY by Will Murray
One of the scarcest of all pulp titles, few magazines have the aura that legendary The Thrill Book does.
In a lengthy article, Will Murray sheds light on this unique experiment from Street & Smith,
claimed incorrectly by some to be the first fantasy pulp. Illustrated with every cover from this rare pulp.

THE SAGA OF SINGAPORE SAMMY by Rick Lai
Pulp author George Worts created several memorable series characters, among them Peter the Brazen and Gillian Hazeltine.
One of his longest running series concerned South Seas adventure Sam Shea, also known throughout the Orient as Singapore Sammy,
which saw print in Argosy and Short Stories,.

This is his account of his Weird Tales career, written in the 1970s and intended for
Robert Weinberg’s pulp fanzine, Pulp, but published now for the first time.

His friend Link Hullar contributes an appreciation of pulp fandom’s leading artist, accompanied by several of Frank’s masterful drawings,
appearing here for the first time.

"The Black Star Passes" by John W. Campbell, Jr. is a true masterpiece, and "The Jameson Satellite" by Neil R. Jones, which may not be as familiar to many, is also a true classic that many readers remember fondly. "Asru, Willik and the Wolf" by Gerald W. Page and "Time is of the Essence" by K.G. McAbee are also featured in this issue, along with Ron Wilber's wonderful "Saucy Blaine" comic, which will be ending it's run soon. We will be sad when it departs these pages, but Mr. Wilber has decided to focus on other features. I know we'll all miss Saucy and Zeech! And we top off this issue with a Retro-Review look back at the Batman movie films in a great feature by Chris Carney.

And if the cover looks familiar, it's because it's one of the best from the "original" Startling Stories (Sept. 1950) by Earle K. Bergey, and in keeping with our tradition of mixing the old with the new, we are pleased to present it to readers who may not have that particular issue in their collection.  Read and Enjoy!
