"The Iron Ace" by William E. Barrett
In the Misty Skies of WWI France, history is written with flaming guns! And Yank airman Hugh McQuillen had smashed his way into those history books as "The Iron Ace."

Assigned as the C.O. of a Royal Flying Corps squadron, and prowling the skies in his deadly war plane adorned with the Laughing Skull, he was a grim and unrelenting instrument of war who killed Germans with such ruthless efficiency that he became known on both sides of the line as "The Assassin." McQuillen believed there was no decent way to bring men to a violent end, so he would not bow to the "chivalry of the air" practiced by his R.F.C. mates and the Germans. This made the Iron Ace a marked man, and his enemies would stop at nothing to bring an end to his savage reign.

Written by William E. Barrett, the nine tales of "The Iron Ace" appeared in Sky Birds magazine from 1933 through 1934. Barrett is best remembered for his novels, The Left Hand of God and The Lillies of the Field. But he was initially a very busy writer for the pulp magazines. And while much of his work was in the air war mags, he also contributed to the western and detective pulps. One of Barrett's most popular characters appeared in a series of stories in Dime Detective. "Needle Mike" was an undercover crime fighter who posed a s a tattoo artist.

"The Iron Ace" will be available from Amazon,
Mike Chomko Books, and Adventure House.

Black Coat Press - August releases are now available!
J. H. Rosny Ainé's THE YOUNG VAMPIRE  (six out of seven in the series).
This one includes a truly fascinating novella in which vampirism is treated as the result of physical possession by an extra-dimensional alien entity. As often with Risny, one wishes the concept had been developed more fully. The pierce de  resistance of the book is Companions of the Universe, which for all iuntents and purposes is a mainstream dramatic novel about human relationships, but taking place in a secret group of physicists who have just built some strange machine designed to see beyond the subparticles and pierce the secrets of the universe. Strange and definitely ahead of its times.

Henri Falk's THE AGE OF LEAD
Henri Falk's THE AGE OF LEAD is sci-fi on a more pragmatic scale. The title story describes what happened to Earth when the Sun starts emitting bursts of gamma rays killing people; the only shielding material, lead, becomes more precious than  gold and human civilization must learn to adapt -- or die. The book contains two more fantastic novellas, including one in which a scientist devises a machine that can turn him into a gaseous wraith.

Paul Feval's THE CADET GANG
Paul Feval's THE CADET GANG is historically the last Black Coats novel he wrote before his born-again experience. Plotwise, the book is a continuation of both THE COMPANIONS OF THE TREASURE and HEART OF STEEL, revising both the conspiracy to defraud the Clare family, and the secret of the Colonel's treasure. Frustratingly, Feval drops hints about future novels that will never be written. The novel is also rather more gory than usual, anticipating the morbid fascination for serial killers.

The Best From Adventure Volume 1
Edited and with an introduction by Doug Ellis

Adventure Magazine first appeared in late 1910 and soon, attracting top name authors, became renowned for the type of fiction its name implied. It grew into a powerhouse in the genre fiction field, and was later dubbed by Time magazine, the "No. 1 Pulp." Culled from its first 26 issues, this collection brings together 24 of the best tales that appeared therein, including rarely or never-before reprinted works by Talbot Mundy, Damon Runyon, Rafael Sabatini, William Hope Hodgson, R. Austin Freeman, James Francis Dwyer, Frank L. Packard and others.

The Letter of His Orders by Talbot Mundy

"For anyone who imagines Mundy's stories are simple-minded adventure melodramas, "The Letter of His Orders" shows Mundy to be a first-class observer of real world politics and human nature. In a very real sense, a story like "The Letter of His Orders" presages . . . Graham Greene. Where Greene makes fun of colonial intelligence officers in novels like Our Man in Havana, Mundy shows us the other side of that most mundane of heroes, the British colonial civil servant ... [as he]  fulfills the noble promise of unquestioning loyalty . . ."  —Gerry Conway, from this introduction

This title reprints three classic short novels from the pages of Adventure, Mundy's primary American market during the early years of his career.  With an introduction by Gerry Conway (writer/producer Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Father Dowling Mysteries, Diagnosis Murder, etc.)

IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR
BY FARNHAM BISHOP AND ARTHUR GILCHRIST BRODEUR

Return to the world of the Ancient Mediterranean, a place where men carved empires with their bronze swords and braved any danger for gold.  It is here that the cities of Troy and Crete clash, their fates resting in the hands of:

RAGNARR – the blonde, steel-thewed Warrior Prince of the Northern lands.  He is the  wielder of Tyrfing, the sword forged by the Gods.  Ragnarr leads a daring band of Northmen who are ready to face any danger, fight any foe, and die in the service of their Prince.

KING MINOS – King of the Island Empire of Crete, the Mistress of the Mediterranean.  His mighty fleets rule the waves, exacting tribute from all lands.  Minos ruthlessly suppresses any dissent.  His enemies meet their deaths at the hands of the Minotaur.

KING DARDANUS – the King of Troy, who chafes at his vassalage to King Minos.  He hopes to use the Northern Prince for his own gain.

ILIA – beautiful daughter of King Dardanus.  She gives her heart to one prince, but is loved by two.

AMBROGEOS – Prince of Crete, first-born of King Minos.  His love of Ilia and hatred of Ragnarr will engulf the Mediterranean world in an orgy of death and destruction.

ARIADNE – Princess of Crete, beautiful High Priestess of the Goddess.  She is torn between her love of her country and her love for her country's greatest enemy.

THE MINOTAUR: Horrific beast of legend, to whom the enemies of King Minos are sacrificed in bloody religious rights.

Filled with intrigue, raids, and exciting battles on land and at sea, IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR will thrill lovers of historical adventure!

First serialized in ADVENTURE in 1916, IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR marked the first collaboration between Farnham Bishop and Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur.  In addition to being fine fiction writers, both were very capable historians -- Bishop would write non-fiction books on the Panama Canal, submarines and the U.S. wars with Mexico, while Brodeur would become a professor at University of California Berkeley, translate Norse prose eddas and gain scholarly recognition for his work on "Beowulf".  In writing IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR, they drew upon their backgrounds and research abilities to create a believable tale of historical high adventure.  First time in book form.

CONAN: THE FRAZETTA COVER SERIES #5 - Arriving in comic shops August 4th!
Timothy Truman, Cary Nord, Tom‡s Giorello, Richard Isanove, and Dave Stewart

The fifth installment in Conan: The Frazetta Cover Series features both Frank Frazetta's tense, dramatic Man-Ape painting and an adaptation of Robert E. Howard's "Rogues in the House"Ñas interpreted by Timothy Truman, artists Cary Nord and Tom‡s Giorello, and colorist Richard Isanove. A longtime Howard favorite, this seminal Conan story first appeared in Weird Tales in 1934, and Frazetta's Man-Ape piece is one of his few Conan paintings to make a direct reference to one of Howard's works.

Our favorite barbarian has been living as a thief for some time, and his crimes are catching up with him. Becoming enmeshed in the plans of a treacherous nobleman and a dark priest, Conan finds himself making some strange allies in order to free himself from the labyrinthine, booby-trapped halls in the Red Priest's stronghold. Stalked by a mysterious, hulking horror that's grown out of control, Conan and the nobleman make a wary alliance with the Red Priest himself!

Dark Horse Comics - ComicCon International Robert E. Howard News!
Savage Sword
Dark Horse revealed at Comic-Con International in San Diego that it is launching an anthology series featuring REH heroes including Conan, Kull, and Kane but also lesser-known characters like Dark Agnes, El Borak, Bran Mak Morn, and Sailor Steve Costigan. "Savage Sword" will launch in December in a series of 80-page perfect-bound comics which will include  original adventures and classic, recolored reprints in each issue, as well as bonus material.

The first issue of the anthology will feature work by Paul Tobin, Wellinton Alves, Mark Finn, Tim Bradstreet, Roy Thomas, Barry Windsor Smith, Tim Conrad, Gil Kane, Esad Ribic, and many more. Paul Tobin is leading off the new "Savage Sword" anthology series with a story featuring Conan focusing on Conan's days of thievery. The artist for Tobin’s Conan serial is Wellinton Alves.

Kull
David Lapham (Stray Bullets) will script a new adventure of King Kull, "The Hate Witch," that premieres in November. "The Hate Witch" originated wholly with Lapham, but he plans to draw heavily on Howard's stories. Lapham said that he will be picking up some time after the events of the previous Dark Horse "Kull" miniseries, which was written by Arvid Nelson.  Kull presides over a nation on the edge of revolution. Enter the Hate Witch—an ancient enemy eager to use Kull to destroy the great City of Valusia and with it, the whole of humanity. After a string of murders, the city's noblemen look to over throw  the King and force Kull to return to the land of his exile—Atlantis.

Gabriel Guzman (Predators) illustrates this epic tale that tests King Kull's true stamina as ruler of all of Valusia, and reintroduces readers to Brule, Tu and Queen Igraine.

Solomon Kane
Solomon Kane returns for a third miniseries in November. "Solomon Kane: Skulls in the Stars" will be written by former "Conan the Barbarian" scribe Bruce Jones and illustrated by Rahsan Ekedal, with painted covers by Gregory Manchess and  variants by Guy Davis.

TRAIL OF THE CLOVEN HOOF by Arlton Eadie
Written in 1935, this is #7 in the
Dancing Tuatara Press series of supernatural revivals from the past. This is the complete novel, as it was written, not the bowdlerized version that was previously published in the pulps.

ULTRA-BOILED by Gary Lovisi
Over 20 short stories about the underside of crime from our man in Brooklyn. $20 trade paperback; $35 hardcover with jacket.

SAVAGE HIGHWAY by Jack Moskovitz
His latest novel of the road and its denizens. Like his previous book, HELL FIRE, you are subjected to the sights, sounds and, most particularly, smells of modern noir as you follow the anti-heroes from truckstop to barroom to abbatoir, each more disgusting than the last. No one writes like Jack Moskovitz.

SAND’S GAME by Ennis Willie
Back in the 60s and 70s he was one of the most hard-boiled writers going and here’s the first of what we hope will become a complete revival of his epics. It has two novels, three short stories, an interview, and several articles about Ennis by the likes of Max Allan Collins, Ed Gorman, Bill Crider, Bill Pronzini, James Reasoner, Lynn Myers and Steve Mertz. $20 trade paperback; $32 hardcover with jacket.

THE BORDER LINE by Walter S. Masterman
#6 in the Dancing Tuatara Press collection from Ramble House, this is one of Masterman’s almost-supernatural novels.

STARTLING STORIES #4 (Summer 2010)
Now available!

Stop by the Wild Cat Books table at Pulpfest!

Special Frank Frazetta and Al Williamson Tribute Issue!

This issue of "Startling Stories" is a special one to us in many ways. Not only does it feature classic Golden Age Science Fiction such as "Empire" by Clifford D. Simak and "The Devil's Asteroid" by Manly Wade Wellman, but also new fiction by our very talented writers: "The Demon of Blackwater Swamp" by Russ Parkhurst with art by David Burton, "Last Lord of the Three Lands" by K.G. McAbee with art by Gary McCluskey, "A Scroll of Strange Device" by Gerald W. Page and Jerry L. Burge, "What Wizardry May Come" and "Bugs Begone!" both by S. Clayton Rhodes, and the regular "Saucy Blaine" comic by Ron Wilber.

It also offers a Special Tribute to a very important man who passed away while we were in the middle of production. I'm speaking, of course, of Frank Frazetta, probably one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century. His loss hit many of us hard, and I want to thank the talented writers and artists who took the time out of their busy schedules to produce something especially for this issue.

And in honor of another great artist who passed away soon after, we are proud to present a Golden Age comic reprint by the late and great Al Williamson. All of us here at Wild Cat Books are doing what we do because of their influences that left lasting impressions on us as we were growing up. We hope you enjoy this Special Issue, and my thanks go out to William L. Carney who worked diligently to bring this fine issue into your hands... We'll miss you, Frank and Al, but your work and inspiration will live forever... May you both rest in peace!

After nearly sixty years, these stories of rip-roaring adventure and good clean fun are as charming and entertaining as ever. Collects Tarzan issues #28-#32 and Tarzan's Jungle Annual #1, from 1952.

THUN'DA, KING OF THE CONGO ARCHIVE - Now available!
Written by Frank Frazetta and Gardner Fox, art by Frazetta and Bob Powell.

Frank Frazetta is widely renowned as one of the greatest fantasy illustrators of all time. But he didn't hone his skills in study at the fabled galleries of Paris or Milan; his legendary talents flourished as he worked for hire during the Golden Age of comics!

In the early 1950s, Frazetta set up shop at bustling comics publisher Magazine Enterprises, contributing beautiful cover illustrations and comics pages. There, he also created his first mighty adventurer: the lost-world-jungle hero Thun'da! Though Frazetta left Magazine Enterprises shortly after the first issue of Thun'da was released, and the series was ultimately short lived despite the talented care of collaborators Gardner Fox and Bob Powell, to this day the Thun'da, King of the Congo comics series is held in high regard both as an exciting adventure title and as the only comics series ever to include a cover-to-cover, all-Frazetta issue!

Collecting all six issues of Thun'da, King of the Congo, as well as the Thun'da backup stories that appeared in Cave Girl and Africa: Thrilling Land of Mystery.

224 pages, $49.99

Age of Aces - Coming very soon!
Age of Aces will have "hot off the press" copies available at PulpFest!

AMRA returns - Classic reprints and an all new magazine!
Wildside Press has announced that the very first issue of AMRA — the Hugo Award-winning REH and sword & sorcery fanzine — will be included in facsimile in the next issue of Adventure Tales. (AMRA had very humble beginnings. Vol. 1, No. 1 was a 2-page memeographed newsletter.) But this reissue is the start of something very exciting. Wildside Press acquired the assets of Owlswick Press (including AMRA) following owner George Scithers' death, and we will be reviving AMRA and reissuing some of the rare early issues in coming months as affordable chapbooks. Not only are they are a fascinating look at the early days of REH fandom, but they contain many great articles by people like Poul Anderson, Fritz Leiber, and many others. Heavily illustrated, too.

Wildside Press will also be resurrecting AMRA as a new publication with Vol. 3, No. 1, featuring the best sword & sorcery and REH-related fiction and nonfiction. Look for more information in months to come.

Flash Gordon - Heading to big screen!
Director Breck Eisner is prepping to revive “Flash Gordon” for a new generation. With the goal of making it intelligent, edgy and immensely loyal to the original canon, Eisner has no intention of retreading the same ground as those before him.  Instead, he will bring the comics to life with the latest technology at his disposal.

“The comic from 1930s was made into serials in the ’50s and ’70s, then the director’s version in the ’80s,” Eisner told Airlock Alpha. “It was campy and the effects were not so good – this version is in no way a remake. Our version goes back to strips from ’30s and we will update those and shoot the movie as if the strips were drawn today. It will be an action and adventure sci-fi.

Now available!

This is the first of a two volume set which, when combined with Book Two,
will encompass almost 800 pages and include more than 5,900 illustrations.

Features of Book One
  • A five-chapter history of America’s film serials — silent and sound — revised and enlarged from Stedman’s much-praised book of the 1970s: The Serials: Suspense and Drama by Installment.

  • Annotated listings for each chapter play, including cast, directors, chapter titles and commentary.
  • Reproductions of rare stills, posters and actual film frames: a remarkable number in color-some for the first time.
  • Full color and black and white illustration throughout.

Note: an excerpt from one of the updated chapters can be found on The Nostalgia League page, Bela Lugosi's Last Serial.

PayPal: Click the PayPal link on the website and you will be taken to the PayPal site where you can buy the book with your PayPal account or major credit card.

Special Offer - Everyone who buys a copy of Book One will receive $5 off the purchase price of Book Two!

The forthcoming Book Two contains longer, and extensively illustrated, entries on every cliffhanger of the sound period, including the Lone Ranger, Green Hornet, and Superman duos, the Flash Gordon trio, the Dick Tracy quartet, and the classic Adventures of Captain Marvel, Drums of FuManchu, Spy Smasher — 232 in all.

Also covered individually are lesser known, but quite entertaining, adventures that brought kids to the theaters each Saturday. And, of course, there is the parade of Westerns with Buck Jones, Johnny Mack Brown, Wild Bill Elliott, and others. Bela Lugosi’s serial vehicles get their individual pages or two, as do the low-priced clinkers that turned up through the years, especially in the genre’s last days.

TNL Library’s “The Green Hornet Strikes Again” is an example of Book Two’s sound entries, minus the book’s dozen illustrations for that serial.

The Movie Serial Companion: Book One - Recommended!
THE MOVIE SERIAL COMPANION Book One is the first of two books about the classic cliffhangers that thrilled the multitudes during the first half of the 20th century. The book starts off with a five-chapter history of America’s film serials that runs for 62 pages and covers both the silent and the sound film eras. The text is easily read, engaging, informative, and insightful. My interest never flagged and I learned many things that I was not previously aware of. For instance, I did not know that most serials had two directors, one shooting while the other prepared the next days work, or one doing location scenes while the other did interiors. Following the beginning chapters of the book is a 225 page annotated listing of the American serials of the silent era. The listing is done alphabetically by serial title. Most of the serials merit at least a full page which includes the date of the serial, the studio, the director(s), a listing of the players, a listing of the chapter titles, a synopsis of the story, and a brief commentary. Each listing is accompanied with numerous stills of scenes from the serial and of the players. Some of the entries also include the one-sheet advertising for the film or magazine covers featuring the serial or its players. Each serial entry averages at least 3-to-4 illustrations. Illustrations are in black and white and full color throughout. All-in-all, this book is obviously a labor of love and a welcome addition to my library. I look forward to the publication of the second book in the series.

Joining us at the 2010 PulpFest to help celebrate the 90th anniversaries of Black Mask’s debut and Max Brand’s first appearance in Western Story Magazine will be prolific author Robert J. Randisi, whom the publishing-industry trade journal Booklist has called "one of the last true pulp writers."

Randisi, who has for many years been active in both fan and pro circles, is the author of over 540 books, more than 50 short stories, and one screenplay. He has also edited 30 anthologies. A professional since 1982, when he began writing full time, Randisi has penned Westerns, mysteries, and stories in the horror, science fiction, and men’s-adventure genres. He has written yarns published under 15 different pseudonyms; as "J. R. Roberts" he created—and still writes—the long-running Gunsmith series, which currently numbers some 340 novels.

Randisi’s activities in the crime-fiction field have been many and varied. He edited a Writer’s Digest how-to book, Writing the Private Eye Novel, and for seven years was the mystery reviewer for the Orlando Sentinel. In 1982 he founded the Private Eye Writers of America and created the Shamus Award. In 1985 he co-founded Mystery Scene Magazine and the short-lived American Mystery Award; a couple years later he co-founded the American Crime Writer’s League. In 1993 he was awarded a Life Achievement Award at the Southwest Mystery Convention. Just last year he received the Life Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of America.

We look forward to having Bob Randisi join us in Columbus this July, and we trust that PulpFest attendees will be delighted to have him participate in our celebration of vintage pulp fiction.

PulpFest plans are coming together rapidly and dealers tables are going fast. Print advertising for the convention will be rolling out shortly, and we’re already distributing flyers and promotional postcards by the thousands at targeted conventions and book fairs in the Northeast and Midwest.

We’ll be making additional updates to this site in the weeks and months to come, so check back regularly for news about programming, auctions, and special events.

Join Bob Randisi, William F. Nolan, and hundreds of other fans
at this summer's celebration of the pulps, July 30 - August 1, in Columbus, Ohio.

TARZAN! EXPLORATION OF THE LEGENDARY HERO THROUGH POP CULTURE
Coming in October!
Pascal Dible
An exploration of the legendary hero’s journey through pop culture. Apeman. Lord of the Jungle. Eco-warrior. Whatever you call him, Tarzan is, above all else, a legend. First created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in Tarzan of the Apes in 1912, Tarzan was more than a European orphan adopted by gorillas in darkest Africa. He quickly became a legendary opponent of colonialism, a valiant symbol of equality, a dangerous yet undeniably attractive lover, and a seemingly immortal hero to us all. Tarzan, who has starred in countless books, movies, radio and television programs, and in recent years Broadway productions and video games—not to mention hundreds of toys, games, and ephemera—holds a unique place in popular culture and in society. As times changed, so did Tarzan and his world: changing mores demanded Jane wear more clothing; developing ethnic tolerances shaped Tarzan’s relationship with his African friends and enemies; and people began to see Tarzan’s thoughtful coexistence with nature and his animal brethren as a bastion of environmentalism. Pascal Dibie, along with other scholars, shine’s a critical yet celebratory light on Tarzan and Burroughs, and explores the relationship between the character and his times. An amazing retrospective of the legendary character, Tarzan! is filled with scenes from the many films, including photographs of stars such as Johnny Weissmuller, Buster Crabbe, Christopher Lambert, Maureen O’Hara, and of course, Cheetah, in addition to classic comic strips, vintage book jackets, retro Viewmaster scenes, and art created especially for this book.
Hardcover, 9x11, 248 pages,  $30.00

Age of Aces - Coming very soon!
Age of Aces will have "hot off the press" copies available at PulpFest!!!!!

Edited and with an introduction by Doug Ellis

Adventure Magazine first appeared in late 1910 and soon, attracting top name authors, became renowned for the type of fiction its name implied. magazine enterprise of the early 20th century."

H.P. Lovecraft to Richard F. Seawright, March 31, 1932

Novels Include:

Paul S. Powers - Rejuvinated website now online!
For all the Western pulp fans, you should take a look at the new and rejuvenated website Laurie Powers has done  for her grandfather Paul S. Powers.
The site is located at http://www.pulpwriter.com/.

For those that don't know, Paul S. powers was a prolific and successful pulp fiction writer, writing over 400 stories for such pulp fiction magazines as Wild West Weekly, Weird Tales, Thrilling Western, Texas Rangers, and more. Later Paul wrote a successful and acclaimed Western novel, Doc Dillahay. Paul was a skilled craftsman who wrote in many genres, including horror, noir, animal, and historical non-fiction.

NOW, for the first time, you can purchase a Paul Powers short story - never before published!
Recently over 20 short story manuscripts were discovered. Many of these were written in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and they consist of a variety of genres, including noir, horror, animal, and of course, westerns. A collection of these stories will be soon published. One of these stories, "Murder on the Hoof," is now available for purchase as an e-book through our online store.

Pulpworks Press: Through the Groaning Earth by Joel Jenkins - Now available!
Sequel to "Escape from Devil's Head"
An unnatural storm arises with great fury and breaks the spine of a foreign warship upon the reefs of Bathos, casting the few survivors into the merciless machinery of the City of Corruption; A silver mine haunted by the vengeful dead; An Assassins Guild that will stop at nothing to slay one that was formerly their own--the woman known as the 'siren of slaughter'; a perilous journey through the bowels of a mountain where lurk the half-breed children of man and demon. Welcome to the City of Bathos!

Through the Groaning Earth picks up where the groundbreaking cult novel of paranoid fantasy, Tales from the City of Bathos left off, introducing us to new characters, visiting old acquaintances (would you ever want to call any of these characters friends?) and bitter enemies, and leaving us stranded in the streets of Bathos, The City of Corruption--which is really the central character of the novel.

With a Tarantino-esque story structure, Leiber-like characterizations, Lovecraftian elements, Howardian-style verbage and a grim dollop of the Orwellian dystopia that has overtones of modern Socialist government, Through the Groaning Earth is a thought-provoking as well as an entertaining read.

STARTLING STORIES #4 (Summer 2010)
Now available!

In his penultimate adventure, Jack is backed into helping Munir despite his ongoing involvement in the cosmic shadow war between the Ally and the Otherness.  Or perhaps because of it.  His nature is proactive, and he’s chafing at being forced into the defensive role of protecting the Lady.  His instincts tell him to bring the fight to the enemy.

And then there’s Dawn Pickering and her strange pregnancy that’s lasting too long.  She finally goes into labor and delivers…what?  She catches a glimpse of the baby as it’s whisked away and is terrified by what she sees. Later she’s told the baby died of birth defects, but she doesn’t believe it.  Neither does Jack.  Neither does Weezy.

And then there’s the Septimus Order and the Kickers, seemingly working in concert to bring down the Internet.  If they succeed, it will extinguish the Lady and open the way for the Otherness to take over our reality.

The threads from past novels join these events to weave a dark tapestry that spells doom for humanity.

James Bond - Movie franchise comes to an end?
According to the Mirror, the newest chapter in the spy series has been shut down due to MGM’s ongoing financial woes. The studio, which has been home to 007 since the beginning, is drowning in debt and in need of a life preserver. Sadly, no one is coming to their rescue. It has been confirmed that the movie has been axed – and it could be years before Bond is back on the big screen.

Note: an excerpt from one of the updated chapters can be found on The Nostalgia League page, Bela Lugosi's Last Serial.

To order: Please print out a copy of the order form and mail it with your payment to the address listed on the form.

Seven years ago, he led a tactical squad that included his sister, Terry, into a deadly ambush in the desert. The Wilkersons, a Nomad gang who robbed a Trans-Exxon payroll, wiped out four members of his unit, kidnapped Terry, and left Brand for dead. July 30 through August 1st!

William F. Nolan will be the Guest of Honor at this year's convention!

Robert J. Randisi to Attend PulpFest!
Programming Announcement!
Since 2002, Haffner Press has been steadily reprinting the stories of Leigh Brackett, and at PulpFest 2010 editor and publisher Stephen Haffner will present a 45-minute multimedia presentation on the background and career of this favorite writer. Drawing from sources common and obscure, you do not want to show up late for this event.
Join Stephen Haffner on Friday, July 30 at 9:30 PM for "Leigh Brackett: American Icon."
For further details, please visit http://www.pulpfest.com/.

"The Complete Captain Combat" by Barry Barton

While Death flies the Swastika across the bloody skies of World War II one American pilot stands before the pendulum of history! Amidst the vivid flames of the European conflict, Bill Combat has made it his personal mission to bring down the German Fuhrer and his Nazi henchmen. He knows first hand the ruthlessness of the Nazis, for they had already murdered his mother and uncle. And now he finds himself in the #1 spot on the Nazi's "Most Wanted" list. But Captain Combat has vowed that when the battle smoke clears, freedom and dignity will reign while Nazi evil shall be banished from the earth!

The Captain Combat stories were originally published bi-monthly from March to August 1940, over a year before America would be thrust into the Second World War. Age of Aces Books has gathered together all three of Barry Barton’s dynamic and thrilling novels of modern war into one volume for the first time.

"The Complete Captain Combat" is a 386 page, 6x9 trade paperback for $16.99. Like all Age of Aces Books, it is available from Amazon

Introduction by Will Murray

Doc Savage/Lester Dent expert Will Murray.

"Hell on Friday"   -    "Murder is Forgetful"   -   "The Queen City Murder Case"
And as a bonus: Bogart's article on advice for new writers.
550 pages | $34.95 softcover | TBD hardcover

HELL ON FRIDAY
At 10:40, Johnny Saxon, detective and ex-pulp writer, was snooping through Sam Sontag's almost deserted office, keeping one appreciative eye on the luscious curves etched against the frosted glass door of Sam's private hide-away. At 11:20, Johnny was in a bar, fortifying himself against the cold night air. At 12:03, he was gasping with delight as the incredibly lovely vision coming down the ramp at the Grand Central Station actually turned out to be the fabulous Dulcy Dickens, the girl who was scheduled to set the publishing world on its ear. And then at 12:40, just as Dulcy was saying, "Oh, Shonny" in her soft caressing voice, the cops came in and carted Johnny off to jail. It was a hell of a Friday night... And the next morning, Johnny found that he had never before understood what trouble really meant. Sontag was dead, murdered; Dulcy had disappeared with complete efficiency, and Johnny himself was gazing darkly into the business-end of the big gun held in the nervous fist of Jasper Ward, the late Sam Sontag's racketeer partner. It was find Dulcy Dickens--or else!

MURDER IS FORGETFUL
When the enormously wealthy J. P. Smith retained Johnny Saxon, private investigator and former detective story writer, to go to the magnificent Long Island estate of his lovely, wealthy sister-in-law, Irene Smith, to help her regain her memory, lost when her husband died in an automobile accident, Johnny was certain of but two things: Irene Smith's husband had not died by accident and Irene Smith herself, helpless in the complete blankness of amnesia, was under sentence of death from someone--from a murderer who was gambling against time that he could silence her forever before she could remember the night of the fatal accident. In Irene's charming, red-headed daughter, Kay, Johnny Saxon and his assistant, Moe Martin, thought they found their first suspect--for Kay had hated her father violently for his treatment of her mother--but after, Kay and Johnny had unexpectedly faced death together she became their strongest ally. For Kay, deeply devoted to her mother, opened more than one vista to the tangled relationships of a large and wealthy family--among others, to the character of J. P. Smith, to the secret drinking orgies of her aunt Nancy and to the dangerous eccentricities of delightful Grandfather Smith. Smart and swift-moving, "Murder Is Forgetful" is an up-to-the-minute story of a bizarre Long Island crime.
THE QUEEN CITY MURDER CASE
The tall fur-clad brunette at the auction rooms somehow reminded Johnny Saxon of an over-anxious burlesque queen. Certainly she did not look like a connoisseur of antiques. So it was with fascinated curiosity that the New York private detective observed her almost terrified determination to obtain possession of the old spinet desk, and, when that ramshackle article appeared upon the block, mischievously bid it up to an outrageous price. Developments were quick and startling. When Johnny next saw Jeannette Evans, at her apartment, the brunette was dead. And Johnny himself was ticketed as Police Suspect Number One for her murder. Johnny and his man Friday, Moe Martin, had come to Cincinnati on vacation. Pretty Nancy O'Neil, an old flame of Johnny's, quickly appealed to the detective to undertake the case of her married sister, Bess Sherman, threatened by an anonymous blackmailer. Then came the incident at the auction rooms. Johnny could hardly have foreseen how closely the terror of Jeannette Evans and the predicament of Bess Sherman were to be related, or have guessed the role to be played in  the double mystery by the ruthless "lifer" just escaped from the Ohio State Penitentiary. These were puzzles not wholly to be resolved until the exciting snowstorm climax at a nearby winter colony two or three days later.

Blood ‘n’ Thunder #26 - Now available!
Blood ‘n’ Thunder #26 weighs in at 108 pages and is packed with the usual array of articles, departments, illustrations, and advertisements.  The Spring 2010 issue begins with a “Convention Corner” update on this year’s PulpFest.   “Tricks of the Trade” reprints a 1943 Writer’s Digest article by G. T. Fleming-Roberts, who describes the various gimmicks he used to plot his pulp mystery yarns.  “Cliffhanger Classics” presents a beginner’s guide to collecting movie serials, featuring scans of many rare photos and posters. “Adventurous Airwaves” offers the second and final part of a lengthy excerpt from an excellent new book on the Green Hornet radio show, written by Martin Grams and Terry Salomonson. It includes newly uncovered publicity photos taken in 1937 with members of the original cast.

Feature articles include “A Chronology of Clubfoot,” in which Daniel J. Neyer exhaustively analyzes the all-but-forgotten series of adventure/espionage novels written in the years between the two World Wars by British author Valentine Williams; “Hopalong Cassidy: Birth of a Legend,” Ed Hulse’s comparison of the first Hoppy movie to the 1910 Clarence E. Mulford novel from which it was adapted; and “Unholy Jitters: Sex and Sadism in the Red Circle Horror Pulps,” reprinted by popular demand from the long out-of-print second issue of BnT.  The issue closes with “Seven Doughty Doughs,” a lengthy Arthur Guy Empey novelette reprinted from the January 1931 issue of Battle Stories.

Please make your checks or money orders payable to Ed Hulse and send to him at 2467 Route 10 East, Bldg. 15, Apt. 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.  Ed also accepts Paypal payments at bnteditor@yahoo.com.

THE GOLDEN AGE of PULPS SF MAGAZINE DATABASE
SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY AND HORROR (1890-2009)
by EARL TERRY KEMP

The (nearly) Complete Digital Index of all Pulp, Digest, and Magazine Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. From the Beginning to the Present (Dec. 2009) - With Pseudonyms and Thumbnail Graphics

This is the most comprehensive database ever constructed of contributions to magazines in the field of fantastic literature (speculative fiction including science fiction, fantasy, horror, and weird fiction).
It is so comprehensive that it cannot be surpassed, it can only be supplemented,” states Earl Kemp about this “fabulous guide.”

“Few fields have been more remarkably indexed than science fiction and fantasy,” he adds. “This database, of course, updates all previous such bibliographies, and contains complete contents in chronological order as well as by author and title. But where it stands utterly unique is, in addition, recording the contents of perhaps hundreds of semi-professional and amateur publications which carried on the important regimen of fantasy fiction.”

It is a unique tool! It is not a printed book, although all the contents can be printed out. It is not an HTML based application, with all the problems associated with searching for, and printing, data. For the first time ever, it is a relational database enabling the user to find anything, in any combination, and print out the results. The sophisticated user can enhance and personalize his database to reflect his own collection or interests.

This is not an Index, it is more...it is a database containing everything required of an index...and more. This database contains thumbnail cover scans. This database allows the association of data from any field with any other field.

This is a required tool for researchers, collectors, librarians, and fans of the genre. Now not only is the indexed data available, but also the associated cover scans.

This mammoth database — contains more than six separate indexes — Author, Title, Artist, Series, Contents and thumbnail cover scans — is being issued on a CD (650 megabytes) as an MS Access application.

Indexed are contributions to 1,217 different magazine titles, a total of 19,155 separate issues (with over 13,414 cover scans), with contributions by 33,861 writers (with over 1,171 pseudonyms). Indexed are 171,874 entries and serial segments, 24,295 poems, and 44,999 articles and columns.

As another added feature, associated stories are linked to dust cover scans (224 dust jackets) from their first appearance in the specialty press of the Golden Era (Arkham House, Fantasy Press, FPCI, Gnome Press, Prime Press, and Shasta), representing the very best of the Anthem Series.

Here is a bird’s-eye view of this mammoth undertaking:
* Each CD contains 650 megabytes of information
* Contains both a read-only Author and Story Title search form for ready queries directly from the CD, but also a downloadable application that once installed can be used to generate printed reports or any query that the user can design that isn’t already available
* Each of the over 32 fields can be independently searched and associated with any of the other fields
* Contains 13,214 thumbnail cover scans, with 154 alternate and 46 back cover scans
* Contains 224 thumbnail dust jacket scans making over 1,840 connections to various stories
* Contains such fields as Author, Author Type, Story Title, Story Type, Series Title, Cover Artist, Back Cover Artist, Publisher, Editor, Country of Origin, Price, Frequency and several different types of comment fields
* Contains several ready-made Reports for printing select data...Create your own!
* This database is not only an index, it is also a checklist! It is everything the user can imagine and implement!

In all of science fiction history there is nothing like this database. It is the very first of its kind. And now it is available to the public.
It’s all here!

You will find magazines here that can be found no place else. There is data on magazines that were never published but that were assembled. This database contains the rarest of the rare and the obscurest of the obscure. Ashcan issues do exist and are indexed here. Important rare fanzines are listed.  The creation of this database is a landmark occasion. Its appearance marks a milestone in the scholarship and bibliography of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and weird fiction.

CD (650 megabytes) MS Access 2000 (or higher) required - U.S. $40.00 (cash, check or money order payable to Earl Terry Kemp)

He survived in this jungle as he had in that other one—by expecting trouble.

The Magician Detective, and Other Weird Mysteries By Charles Fulton Oursler
Edited by John Locke

Fulton Oursler was one of the great editors of his time, ruling over the Macfadden publishing empire for two decades. He created the first true-crime magazine, True Detective Mysteries, and off-beat titles like Ghost Stories and True Strange Stories. He achieved national fame in the '30s as the editor of Liberty. But stage magic was his first love, and, in his heart, he remained a conjurer in a black cape and top hat. In this collection of early fiction, Oursler's bewitching imagination takes flight in tales of magic, murder and mesmerizing mystery. Apparitions, half-wits, secret panels, devious deceptions, lunatic asylums, warring magicians, criminal masterminds-it's all here.

Also featured is an in-depth exploration of the astonishing career of Fulton Oursler.
6x9-inch perfect bound; 210 pages, $18.00 postpaid

Thousands of Pulp Magazines in One Hall!
July 30 through August 1st!

William F. Nolan will be the Guest of Honor at this year's convention!

Robert J. Randisi to Attend PulpFest!
