George McWhorter, curator of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Memorial Collection at the Ekstrom Library of the University of Louisville, has accepted the Muckers' offer to be Special Guest of Honor. Thomas Floyd is the Artist Guest of Honor. Stephen D. Korshak, author of Grand Master of Fantasy: The Paintings of J. Allen St. John and From the Pen of Paul: The Fantastic Images of Frank R. | Black Coat Press - August releases are now available! J. H. Rosny Ainé's THE YOUNG VAMPIRE (six out of seven in the series). This one includes a truly fascinating novella in which vampirism is treated as the result of physical possession by an extra-dimensional alien entity. As often with Risny, one wishes the concept had been developed more fully. The pierce de resistance of the book is Companions of the Universe, which for all iuntents and purposes is a mainstream dramatic novel about human relationships, but taking place in a secret group of physicists who have just built some strange machine designed to see beyond the subparticles and pierce the secrets of the universe. Strange and definitely ahead of its times. Henri Falk's THE AGE OF LEAD Henri Falk's THE AGE OF LEAD is sci-fi on a more pragmatic scale. The title story describes what happened to Earth when the Sun starts emitting bursts of gamma rays killing people; the only shielding material, lead, becomes more precious than gold and human civilization must learn to adapt -- or die. The book contains two more fantastic novellas, including one in which a scientist devises a machine that can turn him into a gaseous wraith. Paul Feval's THE CADET GANG Paul Feval's THE CADET GANG is historically the last Black Coats novel he wrote before his born-again experience. Plotwise, the book is a continuation of both THE COMPANIONS OF THE TREASURE and HEART OF STEEL, revising both the conspiracy to defraud the Clare family, and the secret of the Colonel's treasure. Frustratingly, Feval drops hints about future novels that will never be written. | Dark Horse Comics - ComicCon International Robert E. Howard News! Savage Sword Dark Horse revealed at Comic-Con International in San Diego that it is launching an anthology series featuring REH heroes including Conan, Kull, and Kane but also lesser-known characters like Dark Agnes, El Borak, Bran Mak Morn, and Sailor Steve Costigan. "Savage Sword" will launch in December in a series of 80-page perfect-bound comics which will include original adventures and classic, recolored reprints in each issue, as well as bonus material. The first issue of the anthology will feature work by Paul Tobin, Wellinton Alves, Mark Finn, Tim Bradstreet, Roy Thomas, Barry Windsor Smith, Tim Conrad, Gil Kane, Esad Ribic, and many more. Paul Tobin is leading off the new "Savage Sword" anthology series with a story featuring Conan focusing on Conan's days of thievery. The artist for Tobin’s Conan serial is Wellinton Alves. Kull David Lapham (Stray Bullets) will script a new adventure of King Kull, "The Hate Witch," that premieres in November. "The Hate Witch" originated wholly with Lapham, but he plans to draw heavily on Howard's stories. Lapham said that he will be picking up some time after the events of the previous Dark Horse "Kull" miniseries, which was written by Arvid Nelson. Kull presides over a nation on the edge of revolution. Enter the Hate Witch—an ancient enemy eager to use Kull to destroy the great City of Valusia and with it, the whole of humanity. After a string of murders, the city's noblemen look to over throw the King and force Kull to return to the land of his exile—Atlantis. Gabriel Guzman (Predators) illustrates this epic tale that tests King Kull's true stamina as ruler of all of Valusia, and reintroduces readers to Brule, Tu and Queen Igraine. Solomon Kane Solomon Kane returns for a third miniseries in November. Ginger Johnson released a Special Issue of a new pulp fanzine, titled ECHOES,
a name selected by pulp historian Robert Sampson. In August, V1 N1 was released,
but the numbering system began with the Special Issue (#1), forever causing confusion
among collectors and subscribers. ECHOES became the longest running pulp fanzine
to-date, ending in August 1998 with Issue #100 as a magazine; the September issue
began another 76 issue run as a newsletter, for a total of 176 issues, plus Echoes

New Yahoo Newsgroup! In June 1982, Tom & Ginger Johnson released a Special Issue of a new pulp fanzine, titled ECHOES, a name selected by pulp historian Robert Sampson. In August, V1 N1 was released, but the numbering system began with the Special Issue (#1), forever causing confusion among collectors and subscribers. ECHOES became the longest running pulp fanzine to-date, ending in August 1998 with Issue #100 as a magazine; the September issue began another 76 issue run as a newsletter, for a total of 176 issues, plus Echoes Revisited in June 2002. Gordon - Heading to big screen! Director Breck Eisner is prepping to revive “Flash Gordon” for a new generation. With the goal of making it intelligent, edgy and immensely loyal to the original canon, Eisner has no intention of retreading the same ground as those before him. Instead, he will bring the comics to life with the latest technology at his disposal. “The comic from 1930s was made into serials in the ’50s and ’70s, then the director’s version in the ’80s,” Eisner told Airlock Alpha. “It was campy and the effects were not so good – this version is in no way a remake. Our version goes back to strips from ’30s and we will update those and shoot the movie as if the strips were drawn today. It will be an action and adventure sci-fi. A professional since 1982, when he began writing full time, Randisi has penned Westerns, mysteries, and stories in the horror, science fiction, and men’s-adventure genres. He has written yarns published under 15 different pseudonyms; as "J. R. Roberts" he created—and still writes—the long-running Gunsmith series, which currently numbers some 340 novels. Randisi’s activities in the crime-fiction field have been many and varied. He edited a Writer’s Digest how-to book, Writing the Private Eye Novel, and for seven years was the mystery reviewer for the Orlando Sentinel. In 1982 he founded the Private Eye Writers of America and created the Shamus Award. In 1985 he co-founded Mystery Scene Magazine and the short-lived American Mystery Award; a couple years later he co-founded the American Crime Writer’s League. In 1993 he was awarded a Life Achievement Award at the Southwest Mystery Convention. Just last year he received the Life Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of America. Randisi, who has for many years been active in both fan and pro circles, is the author of over 540 books, more than 50 short stories, and one screenplay. He has also edited 30 anthologies. A professional since 1982, when he began writing full time, Randisi has penned Westerns, mysteries, and stories in the horror, science fiction, and men’s-adventure genres. He has written yarns published under 15 different pseudonyms; as "J. R. Roberts" he created—and still writes—the long-running Gunsmith series, which currently numbers some 340 novels. Randisi’s activities in the crime-fiction field have been many and varied. He edited a Writer’s Digest how-to book, Writing the Private Eye Novel, and for seven years was the mystery reviewer for the Orlando Sentinel. In 1982 he founded the Private Eye Writers of America and created the Shamus Award. In 1985 he co-founded Mystery Scene Magazine and the short-lived American Mystery Award; a couple years later he co-founded the American Crime Writer’s League. In 1993 he was awarded a Life Achievement Award at the Southwest Mystery Convention. Just last year he received the Life Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of America. We look forward to having Bob Randisi join us in Columbus this July, and we trust that PulpFest attendees will be delighted to have him participate in our celebration of vintage pulp fiction.
