"The Complete Captain Combat" by Barry Barton

While Death flies the Swastika across the bloody skies of World War II one American pilot stands before the pendulum of history! Amidst the vivid flames of the European conflict, Bill Combat has made it his personal mission to bring down the German Fuhrer and his Nazi henchmen. He knows first hand the ruthlessness of the Nazis, for they had already murdered his mother and uncle. And now he finds himself in the #1 spot on the Nazi's "Most Wanted" list. But Captain Combat has vowed that when the battle smoke clears, freedom and dignity will reign while Nazi evil shall be banished from the earth!

The Captain Combat stories were originally published bi-monthly from March to August 1940, over a year before America would be thrust into the Second World War. BLACK BAT MYSTERY
HE OWNS THE NIGHT!

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers are excited to announce the release of their latest pulp anthology, BLACK BAT MYSTERY!

One of the most original heroes in all of pulpdom returns in four brand new gun-blazing adventures crammed packed with action and adventure.  The mysterious Black Bat once again patrols the urban jungle, his targets, those who would prey on the weak the helpless.  Crusading District Attorney, Anthony Quinn, was scarred and blinded by gangland hoods.  When an experimental transplant operation restores his sight, it also grants him the ability to see in the dark!  Allowing the public to continue believing he is a harmless, blind attorney, Quinn invents a new identity, that of the crime fighting avenger known as the Black Bat!  With a trio of loyal aids, Carol Baldwin, Silk Kirby and Butch O’Leary, he launches his campaign against the forces of evil.

The Black Bat first appeared in the pages of his own magazine, Black Book Detective.  The author was G.Wayman Jones.  It would run for 62 issues from July 1939 to Winter 1953 and become one of the most popular pulp heroes ever created.

From a giant Nazis bred monster to a gun-slinging Commie assassin, here are four original tales by today’s finest pulp writers; Andrew Salmon, Aaron Smith, Mark Justice and Frank Schildiner starring the Master of the Night.   Once again the Black Bat is thrilling pulp fans with his daring exploits. Long considered the template from which dozen of comic book heroes were inspired, to include Marvel’s Daredevil and DC’s Batman, the Black Bat is truly one of the most unique characters ever born of the pulps.

Featuring a cover by Mark Maddox, with designs and interior illustrations by Rob Davis, BLACK BAT MYSTERY is a must for all action-loving pulp fans.

CRYPTOZOICA by Mark Ellis - Now available!
Where the past has not stopped breathing-and can still eat you alive!   A non-human language spoken by Biblical patriarchs...coded secrets scribbled in the suppressed logbook of Charles Darwin...an elite society of scholars dedicated to preventing humankind from learning that life's true origins may lie within a bizarre ecosystem on a forgotten island christened... Cryptozoica. From novelist Mark Ellis, the writer of Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze comic series and the creator of the best-selling Outlanders novel series, comes Cryptozoica, a tale that combines history and speculative science with blazing action.

When ex-military officers "Tombstone" Jack Kavanaugh and his partner Augustus Crowe gamble their lives to lead a pair of cynical scientists deep into the tropical cauldron of Big Tamtung, they plunge headlong into the heart of the greatest discovery of all time--and into a bloody confrontation with a misshapen madman who lusts after a miracle but will settle for murder. On Cryptozoica the past has not stopped breathing--and can still eat you alive.

"Lost World thrillers never go out of style," says Ellis. "From the enormous popularity of the TV series Lost to the recent non-fiction book, The Lost of City of Z, armchair adventurers are always ready to travel to exotic, unknown lands...Cryptozoica is very much in the mold of classic lost world epics, but it also draws from the most current scholarship in paleontology, zoology, archeology and microbiology."

In keeping with an earlier tradition of lost world tales, Cryptozoica is lavishly illustrated, echoing the graphic iconography and fantastic imagery  of legendary artists Frank Frazetta, Reed Crandall and Roy Krenkel with their illustrated mass-market paperback editions of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Illustrator Jeff Slemons provided eighteen interior black and white illustrations as well as the striking full-color, wraparound cover. His stunning work has been featured in Heavy Metal magazine and Spectrum 17: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art. He is best-known for illustrating the popular role playing game sourcebooks for Hollow Earth Expedition and Hollow Earth Expediton: Secrets of the Surface World.  Both books feature Jeff's detailed dinosaur artwork.

"Dinosaurs continue to be immensely popular," says Ellis, the author of 50 books. "Fascination with these animals is not a transitory fad. There are numerous TV shows and magazines and countless online groups devoted to the study and appreciation of dinosaurs. Jeff's meticulous rendering of dinosauria in Cryptozoica is some of the best and most memorable in recent years."   Cryptozoica readers will be greeted with special design and artistic elements created by professional graphic designer, Melissa Martin-Ellis. "This is a beautifully illustrated volume designed for readers to treasure," the author notes.

Cryptozoica features a unique take on prehistoric survival, linking it with archeological and biological mysteries buried in antiquity. Kavanaugh, his allies and his enemies race against time to discover the key to humanity?fs lost origins, hidden within a cryptic language spoken by Biblical patriarchs.

"Cryptozoica isn't your daddy's Jurassic Park or your great-grand-daddy's Lost World", quips Ellis. "The plot is multi-layered, the characters complex and the action sequences are bare-knuckled and relentless. The story features ruthless Asian triads, a secret society based on a real British organization formed during the reign of Elizabeth I and of course, predatory dinosaurs."

Although many readers know Ellis as "James Axler", the writer and creator of the best-selling Outlanders series, the author has a long history connecting him with iconic action-adventure characters and concepts such as Doc Savage, The Wild, Wild West, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Sherlock Holmes, HP Lovecraft, Mack Bolan and even The Green Hornet.   His own creations include Death Hawk, The New Justice Machine, Star Rangers and Outlanders, the most successful action-adventure novel series of the last 20 years. "Fans of my work and fans of high adventure will love Cryptozoica," Ellis declares. "It's a book that distills all of my trademarks--blazing action, beautiful women, plot twists, centuries old secrets and cutting-edge scientific extrapolation."

Autographed copies can be ordered from http://cryptozoica.com/

DOC WILDE & THE FROGS OF DOOM - Discounted First Edition copies now available!
Amazon currently has some marked down copies of pulp adventure novel, Doc Wilde and The Frogs of Doom, selling for just $6.23. Considering that the hardback usually runs $11 to $16, and the paperback when it finally comes out will likely be a minimum of $8, this is a great opportunity to get the book for cheap.

For the uninitiated, Doc Wilde is a modern take on the great old adventure tales featuring characters like Indiana Jones, The Shadow, the Spider, and most importantly Doc Savage, with strong currents of H.P. Lovecraft’s eldritch horror swirled in.

It is published as a book for young teen readers, but like something like Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Incredibles, is intended for both young and old.

Frogs of Doom is the first in a series; next will be Doc Wilde and The Mad Skull.
You can check out some reviews at http://www.docwilde.com/reviews/.

This book gets a thumbs up for being a very enjoyable read!

Bela Lugosi’s serial vehicles get their individual pages or two, as do the low-priced clinkers that turned up through the years, especially in the genre’s last days.

TNL Library’s “The Green Hornet Strikes Again” is an example of Book Two’s sound entries, minus the book’s dozen illustrations for that serial.

The Magician Detective, and Other Weird Mysteries By Charles Fulton Oursler
Edited by John Locke

Fulton Oursler was one of the great editors of his time, ruling over the Macfadden publishing empire for two decades. He created the first true-crime magazine, True Detective Mysteries, and off-beat titles like Ghost Stories and True Strange Stories. He achieved national fame in the '30s as the editor of Liberty. But stage magic was his first love, and, in his heart, he remained a conjurer in a black cape and top hat. In this collection of early fiction, Oursler's bewitching imagination takes flight in tales of magic, murder and mesmerizing mystery. Apparitions, half-wits, secret panels, devious deceptions, lunatic asylums, warring magicians, criminal masterminds-it's all here.

Also featured is an in-depth exploration of the astonishing career of Fulton Oursler.

IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR
BY FARNHAM BISHOP AND ARTHUR GILCHRIST BRODEUR

Return to the world of the Ancient Mediterranean, a place where men carved empires with their bronze swords and braved any danger for gold.  It is here that the cities of Troy and Crete clash, their fates resting in the hands of:

RAGNARR – the blonde, steel-thewed Warrior Prince of the Northern lands.  He is the  wielder of Tyrfing, the sword forged by the Gods.  Ragnarr leads a daring band of Northmen who are ready to face any danger, fight any foe, and die in the service of their Prince.

KING MINOS – King of the Island Empire of Crete, the Mistress of the Mediterranean.  His mighty fleets rule the waves, exacting tribute from all lands.  Minos ruthlessly suppresses any dissent.  His enemies meet their deaths at the hands of the Minotaur.

KING DARDANUS – the King of Troy, who chafes at his vassalage to King Minos.  He hopes to use the Northern Prince for his own gain.

ILIA – beautiful daughter of King Dardanus.  She gives her heart to one prince, but is loved by two.

AMBROGEOS – Prince of Crete, first-born of King Minos.  His love of Ilia and hatred of Ragnarr will engulf the Mediterranean world in an orgy of death and destruction.

ARIADNE – Princess of Crete, beautiful High Priestess of the Goddess.  She is torn between her love of her country and her love for her country's greatest enemy.

THE MINOTAUR: Horrific beast of legend, to whom the enemies of King Minos are sacrificed in bloody religious rights.

Filled with intrigue, raids, and exciting battles on land and at sea, IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR will thrill lovers of historical adventure!

First serialized in ADVENTURE in 1916, IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR marked the first collaboration between Farnham Bishop and Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur.  In addition to being fine fiction writers, both were very capable historians -- Bishop would write non-fiction books on the Panama Canal, submarines and the U.S. wars with Mexico, while Brodeur would become a professor at University of California Berkeley, translate Norse prose eddas and gain scholarly recognition for his work on "Beowulf".  In writing IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR, they drew upon their backgrounds and research abilities to create a believable tale of historical high adventure.  First time in book form.

KING CORRIGAN'S TREASURE BY H.D. COUZENS
WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY DOUG ELLIS

H.D. Couzens spent many years in Hawaii working for the Internal Revenue Service and came to know the South Seas first hand. In his official capacity, he dealt with the smuggling of opium and other illegal activities occurring in the new Territory, being present on more than one occasion when men were shot.  In his free hours he began composing fiction which found a ready market in such periodicals as METROPOLITAN MAGAZINE, THE CAVALIER, RAILROAD MAN'S MAGAZINE, BLUE BOOK, THE NEW MAGAZINE and, of course, ADVENTURE. Couzens quickly became a reader favorite in the early years of ADVENTURE, before his life was cut short by tuberculosis in 1914.  An accomplished sailor, his sea stories draw upon his own experiences to add believable color to his characters and their lives at sea.

KING CORRIGAN'S TREASURE collects for the first time the complete escapades of South Seas adventurer Captain Billy Englehart and his mate Jim Carncross through such stories "A Salvage Job," "Corks and the Commodore," "Mutiny on the Tonga Belle," "The Devil-Ship"  and others.

THE RED WITCH
BY FARNHAM BISHOP AND ARTHUR GILCHRIST BRODEUR
WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY DOUG ELLIS

1149 A.D.  In Italy the Pope preaches Crusade, and the Christian states of Europe send their armies warring to the Holy Land. Sicily, under King Roger II, lies in an uneasy peace. From within, the Norman conquerors who now rule the island face unrest from their Muslim subjects.  From without, the Germans, the French, the English, the Byzantines and the Berbers of Africa all covet mastery of the strategically placed isle.

The strategically located fortress of Rocca Forte is key to the continued Norman rule of Sicily. Roger has entrusted it to one of his staunchest allies, Count Arnulfo, a mighty warrior known as the Iron Arm.  But Arnulfo is growing old and has no son.  His beautiful daughter, Lady Fulvia, has courage and wit in abundance and is skilled with sword and bow...but is only a woman.  Faced with war, confronted by those who wish to marry her for their own unscrupulous ends, what can one woman do?  The fate of Norman Sicily rides on the answer...

Originally appearing in the pulp ADVENTURE between 1918 and 1920, the Lady Fulvia stories were written by Farnham Bishop and Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur, well-known in the pages of ADVENTURE for coupling their attention to historical detail with rousing action and memorable characters.  Lady Fulvia may have been their most interesting creation; a woman seeking to impose her will in a bloody man's world, to save the land of her birth.  As Bishop and Brodeur stated in their introduction to the series, "She is the storm-center of Sicily; Sicily is the storm-center of the world."

THE RED WITCH collects, for the first time, the complete Lady Fulvia of Rocca Forte series.

DOC SAVAGE - New creative team to be announced!
Paul Malmont has stepped down from writing the new DC Doc Savage comic.
Originally he was staying on for 4 more issues with issues 5-7 as a three parter and issue 8 as a standalone.
As you can see by the solicitation copy for issue 6 above, Ivan Brandon is writing and Nic Klein is the penciling the stand alone issue.
B. Clay Moore will be writing Doc Savage #5.
Paul's departure was rather sudden and a new permanent creative team will most likely be named soon.
This news will no doubt be greeted favorably by many, so hopefully you'll be sampling the Doc comic again when a new creative team is announced.

Thanks to Terry Allen and Michael Brown for the info!

Dan Malcolm (aka Silverberg)

Keep watching the skies for additional details (including pricing and availability)!!

2)  With DETOUR TO OTHERNESS by Henry Kuttner & C.L. Moore at the printer we want to take this opportunity to remind you that the the promo offer of the "1951" chapbook (see the homepage of www.haffnerpress.com for details) will be pulled on June 18th, so you have less than 3 days(!!) to get in on this one!

3)  A NEW POLL!  At www.haffnerpress.com, we have added a new poll at the top left corner asking for your input on some delayed limited editions.  Two of our earlier titles, THE VAMPIRE MASTER by Edmond Hamilton and STARK AND THE STAR KINGS by Hamilton and Leigh Brackett, were both announced with an autographed/slipcased edition.  While the autographs for these editions (Hugh B. Cave & Jon Arfstrom for VAMPIRE and John Jakes & Alex Ebel for STARK) were acquired, the slipcases and chapbooks necessary to publish these books were never made.  We're giving "you" the opportunity to let us know with this poll if we should proceed with the work to make these editions available (or not!).  Early results suggest we should proceed with production of these limiteds -- what do *you* think?

4)  Missing from our last update was the current status of two forthcoming books we're *very* proud of: SHANNACH--THE LAST: FAREWELL TO MARS -- the final collection of Leigh Brackett's short sf stories, and THE UNIVERSE WRECKERS, THE COLLECTED EDMOND HAMILTON, VOLUME THREE.  We're compiling all the data necessary for the erudite appendix you've come to expect on the Collected Hamilton volumes, and we're trying to secure an introduction from a very important person for SHANNACH.  It's up in the air at the moment, but we aim to release one of these titles at Pulpfest (www.pulpfest.com) this year.

5)  Speaking of Pulpfest 2010, we're burning the midnight oil on our presentation in Columbus -- LEIGH BRACKETT: THE QUEEN OF SPACE OPERA.  This 45-minute presentation will feature commentary alongside many rare graphics and photos, along with audio and video of one of our favorite writers.  You do NOT want to miss it!

6)  Stephen Haffner and Dr. Patrice Caldwell will be editing a memorial volume for April 2011: THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF THE JACK WILLIAMSON LECTURESHIP.  Contents are still percolating, but the plan is to celebrate the 35th year of the Jack Williamson Lectureship at Eastern New Mexico University with a selection of essays drawn from more than three decades of presentations by some of the most distinguished names in science, science fiction, and the humanities.

7)  And (as if we have the time), Haffner Press is planning to launch an official "blog" later this summer.  Yes, nearly 10 years after blogging has become passe, you will soon be able to peer into the minds and talents behind HP and (occasionally) get an inside look at our company.

Meanwhile, don't forget to tip your waitress (over!) and . . .

Keep Watching the Skies!

Robert J. Randisi to Attend PulpFest!

Joining us at the 2010 PulpFest to help celebrate the 90th anniversaries of Black Mask’s debut and Max Brand’s first appearance in Western Story Magazine will be prolific author Robert J. Randisi, whom the publishing-industry trade journal Booklist has called "one of the last true pulp writers."

Randisi, who has for many years been active in both fan and pro circles, is the author of over 540 books, more than 50 short stories, and one screenplay. He has also edited 30 anthologies. A professional since 1982, when he began writing full time, Randisi has penned Westerns, mysteries, and stories in the horror, science fiction, and men’s-adventure genres. He has written yarns published under 15 different pseudonyms; as "J. R. Roberts" he created—and still writes—the long-running Gunsmith series, which currently numbers some 340 novels.

Randisi’s activities in the crime-fiction field have been many and varied. He edited a Writer’s Digest how-to book, Writing the Private Eye Novel, and for seven years was the mystery reviewer for the Orlando Sentinel. In 1982 he founded the Private Eye Writers of America and created the Shamus Award. In 1985 he co-founded Mystery Scene Magazine and the short-lived American Mystery Award; a couple years later he co-founded the American Crime Writer’s League. In 1993 he was awarded a Life Achievement Award at the Southwest Mystery Convention. Just last year he received the Life Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of America.

We look forward to having Bob Randisi join us in Columbus this July, and we trust that PulpFest attendees will be delighted to have him participate in our celebration of vintage pulp fiction.

PulpFest plans are coming together rapidly and dealers tables are going fast. Print advertising for the convention will be rolling out shortly, and we’re already distributing flyers and promotional postcards by the thousands at targeted conventions and book fairs in the Northeast and Midwest.

We’ll be making additional updates to this site in the weeks and months to come, so check back regularly for news about programming, auctions, and special events.

Join Bob Randisi, William F. Nolan, and hundreds of other fans
at this summer's celebration of the pulps, July 30 - August 1, in Columbus, Ohio.

The Shadow - Radio's Strangest Adventurer is 80!
"When Radio Was" Marks Anniversary with Special Programming

Marking the eightieth anniversary of the debut of "The Shadow," the nationally syndicated radio program "When Radio Was" will present a special four-week retrospective, which will include the first rebroadcasts of two long-lost 1938 episodes of the classic thriller series starring Orson Welles.

Beginning the week of Tuesday June 29th and continuing through the week of Tuesday July 20th -- check your local listings for exact times and dates -- four episodes of The Shadow will be aired in their entirety. The first two episodes, "The Voice of The Trumpet", from July 3, 1938, and "Mark of The Bat" from July 24, 1938, have only recently been rediscovered and restored. Both star legendary movie actor and director Orson Welles as Lamont Cranston, also known as The Shadow, the cloaked adventurer with the power to cloud men's minds, accompanied by Margot Stevenson as his friend and companion Margo Lane. Other episodes to be featured in the retrospective series are "Island Of The Devil," first heard on January 8, 1939, and starring Bill Johnstone as Cranston, and "The Devil Takes a Wife," from December 8, 1946, featuring Bret Morrison in the lead role, with Grace Matthews as Margo.

Also to be heard are rare interviews from cast and crew reminiscing about their time on the program. These interviews, featuring comments from series creator Walter Gibson, Shadow cast members Bret Morrison and Grace Matthews, writer Sidney Slon, announcer Ken Roberts, and organist Rosa Rio, were recorded in the 1970s for the Radiola Records LP set "The Story of the Shadow," as recently reissued on compact disc by Radio Spirits.

ABOUT THE SHADOW
Radio's iconic crimefighter began his radio career in 1930 as the narrator of the Street and Smith Detective Story Hour -- a sinister, sharp-voiced figure who knew what evil lurked in the hearts of men. Street and Smith introduced "The Shadow" in his own pulp magazine the following year, transforming the narrator figure into a mysterious crimefighter with hypnotic powers. SHAMELESS ART
20th Century Genre and the Artists that Defined It

Unrepentant, unapologetic, unbridled and under-appreciated, genre art from the first half of the 20th century reflected subconscious urges of a economically deprived and sexually depressed generation. This popular art set the stage for the advertised expression of today's more liberated consumer culture. Shameless Art explores the influential work of imaginative illustrators who helped create the visual language for everything from today's comic books, magazine and television advertising, as well as imaginative movies like Avatar and sensual films like Y Tu Mama Tambien. Featuring stunning art by such genre masters as Tom Lovell, Virgil Finlay, Hannes Bok, Margaret Brundage, and Enoch Bolles, this beautifully produced full color collection mirrors mid-20th century masculine fantasies.

Originally published as a 5-part serial in Argosy All-Story Weekly, October 21 and 28 and November, 4, 11, and 18, 1922, this classic science fiction novel begins: The first of the new meteors landed on the earth in November, 1940. It was discovered by a farmer in his field near Brookline, Massachusetts, shortly after daybreak on the morning of the 11th. Astronomically, the event was recorded by the observatory at Harvard as the sudden appearance of what apparently was a new star, increasing in the short space of a few hours from invisibility to a power beyond that of the first magnitude, and then as rapidly fading again to invisibility. This star was recorded by two of the other great North American observatories, and by one in the Argentine Republic. That it was comparatively small in mass and exceedingly close to the earth, even when first discovered, was obvious. All observers agreed that it was a heavenly body of an entirely new order....

"THE BEST OF ADVENTURE VOLUME 1, 1910-1912"
EDITED BY DOUG ELLIS

ADVENTURE first appeared in November 1910.  Quickly attracting top name authors, it soon became renowned for publishing the type of fiction its name implied.  It grew into a powerhouse in the genre fiction field, particularly during the 17 year period from 1911 to 1927 when it was edited by Arthur Sullivant Hoffman, and was later dubbed by TIME magazine, the "No. 1 Pulp."  Paying top rates, at times published as frequently as thrice per month, a crack editorial staff – which early on included Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sinclair Lewis – published adventure fiction in all genres from the top authors of the day, including Talbot Mundy, Rafael Sabatini, H. Rider Haggard and Harold Lamb, along with Pulitzer winner T.S. Stribling.  Many of its stories were singled out for inclusion in "best story of the year" anthologies during its heyday, or have been reprinted in single author collections.  But with the exception of a single anthology published in 1927, there has not been an anthology devoted exclusively to the best fiction published in ADVENTURE.

With the advent of THE BEST OF ADVENTURE series, Black Dog Books will change that.  Under the series editorship of pulp historian Doug Ellis, THE BEST OF ADVENTURE series will consist of a series of "Best of" anthologies compiled from ADVENTURE.  Volume 1 of this series, featuring two dozen stories culled from the 26 issues and over 500 stories published from November 1910 through December 1912, will debut at Pulpfest in July 2010, a few months before the 100th anniversary of ADVENTURE.  Volume 2 of this series, also in production, will reprint ADVENTURE's best stories from 1913-1914, while Volume 3 will cover 1915-1916.  Future volumes will continue chronologically.

In addition to THE BEST OF ADVENTURE series, Black Dog Books has also launching a related line, THE ADVENTURE LIBRARY, which will print single author collections of rare but deserving stories from the pages of ADVENTURE – the first of these, The Black Death by Marion Polk Angellotti is now available, and future volumes appearing soon will include "In the Grip of the Minotaur" by Farnham Biship and Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur (ancient Northmen matched against the glory of Troy and Crete), "The Decree of Allah" by George E. Holt (tales of intrigue and adventure in Morocco), and "King Corrigan's Treasure" by H.D. Couzens (the exploits of Captain Billy Englehart in the South Seas).  With many more to follow!

Haffner Press - Update!
As we're less than two months away from Pulpfest 2010 in Columbus, OH, it's time to bring you another update on what's going on at Haffner Press:

1)  DETOUR TO OTHERNESS by Henry Kuttner & C.L. Moore is at the printer (finally, whoo-hoo!) and we should have finished copies in hand in mid-July.  Our thanks to those of you who are patiently(?) waiting for this book, along with your pre-ordered copies of Williamson's WITH FOLDED HANDS and the chapbook, "1951."  We hope the wait will be worth it.

2)   Meanwhile, it's time to announce that the promo offer of the "1951" chapbook (see the homepage of www.haffnerpress.com for details) will be pulled on June 18th, so you have less than two weeks to get in on this one!

We're giving *you* the opportunity to let us know with this poll if we should proceed with the work to make these editions available (or not!).

4)  Speaking of Pulpfest 2010, we're burning the midnight oil on our presentation in Columbus -- LEIGH BRACKETT: THE QUEEN OF SPACE OPERA.  This 45-minute presentation will feature commentary alongside many rare graphics and photos, along with audio and video of one of our favorite writers.  You do NOT want to miss it!

5)  Here's any EARLY PEEK:  Scheduled for later in 2011 will be an updated and revised edition of LEIGH BRACKETT: AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION WRITER -- HER LIFE AND WORK by Dr. John L. Carr.  Originally written as Dr. Carr's doctoral thesis in 1988, this edition adds many discoveries about Leigh Brackett that have been made in the last 22 years.  More news as it develops!

6)  The newest contributor to Haffner Press' line-up for 2010 almost needs no introduction.  We are pleased to announce that TERROR IN THE HOUSE: THE EARLY KUTTNER, VOLUME ONE will have a foreword by Mr. Richard Matheson!  Additionally, Dr. Garyn G. Roberts (editor of /The Prentice Hall Anthology of Science Fiction and Fantasy /and co-editor of /More Tales of the Defective Detective in the Pulps/ & /The Night Nemesis: The Complete Adventures of the Moon Man-Volume One) /is hard at work on what will be a two-part introduction covering all facets of Henry Kuttner's early writings.

Indiana Jones - New feature film in the works?
The Stuff reports that the fifth "Indiana Jones" is planned to begin production next year.
According to the site the story will center around the Bermuda Triangle, will see the return of both Indy (Harrison Ford) and his son Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf), and will tone back a lot of the CGI elements that took away from the action in 'Crystal  Skull'.

A source tells the paper "George (Lucas) and Steven (Spielberg) have been working on a script and it's almost there... Harrison is on stand-by for filming next year. Shia LaBeouf has a central role again as Indy's son but this will be a blockbuster made in the old fashioned way rather than the CGI efforts of the last movie."

George E. Holt served as Consul-General of the United States to Morocco, and based his character Mohammed Ali upon the real life Mohammed Raisuli, whose life was portrayed in the 1975 film, The Wind and the Lion starring Sean Connery.

Assembled are more than two dozen stories, including two novels, collected from the pages of Adventure, along with non-fiction articles, photographs and additional background material by and about George E. Holt.

Thousands of Pulp Magazines in One Hall!

William F. Nolan will be the Guest of Honor at this year's convention!

Robert E. Howard: Two-Gun Raconteur #14
Available next week!
Now accepting pre-orders!

Howard Days is fast approaching and so is the debut of REH: Two-Gun Raconteur #14.

T
he rare Howard story for issue #14 is “The Curly Wolf of Sawtooth.” To date, this hilarious western featuring Bearfield Elston has only appeared once, in the September 1936 issue of Star Western.  At some point before his death, Howard rewrote a Breckinridge Elkins story titled “A Elkins Never Surrenders” into this Elston story. The Elkins version eventually appeared in 1968, 1979 and 1983.

Also, in addition to the El Borak cover painting by Michael L. Peters (shown at the right), Michael is also drawing a four plate Solomon Kane portfolio for the issue.

Topics for the articles and essays include: Howard’s fight stories, Bran Mak Morn and the Picts, Kull and “The Shadow Kingdom,” Conan and “Red Nails” and Francis X. Gordon and “The Great Game.” The authors are Mark Finn, David Hardy, Brian Leno, Brian Murphy and Simon Sanahujas.

Of course, the issue will also include great artwork by Bob Covington, Stephen Fabian, Miko, Didier Normand, Tomasz Oracz, Richard Pace, Terry Pavlet, Michael L. Peters, Robert Sankner and others.

Plus reviews, news and other features.

Keep an eye open for more details, pricing and ordering information in the next few weeks, both on the blog and on this page.

Robert E. Howard Days 2010 - June 11 and 12!
REHupa and the REH Foundation are working with Project Pride and gearing up for Robert E. Howard Days 2010.  Set aside June 11th and 12th, check your ammo and point your pony in the direction of Cross Plains, Texas, for at least two (and usually four) days chock full of Howard Mania.

The 2010 version of HD is geared towards The Illustrators of Robert E. Howard, and to that end we’ve invited Jim & Ruth Keegan to be our Guests of Honor. Jim & Ruth, in additon to being the fantastic Art Duo responsible for illustrating the Del Rey two-volume set of THE BEST OF ROBERT E. HOWARD and the upcoming EL BORAK The Desert Adventures, are the creators of The Adventures of Two-Gun Bob, the wonderful biographical graphic comic strip that appears in every edition of a REH title from Dark Horse Comics.

There is much more planned on the art side of programming, including an REH art display, at least one book, original drawings from pros like the Keegans, Gary Gianni, Mark Schultz (et al) to be auctioned off at the Banquet and sold at the Swap Meet – all for the benefit of the Howard House and Project Pride.

All the regular Howard activities are there as well: The REH House is open to all (as is the Gift Shop), there’ll be Walking and Bus Tours, Celebration Banquet & Silent Auction, Swap Meet, Caddo Peak BBQ, plus the great fellowship we afford each other in gathering and Talking ’bout Bob. The Poetry Throwdown is coming back in a revised, insect-free fashion, and this year we will present the First Annual Robert E. Howard Foundation Awards. Also, not all the panels are slanted to REH art, so there’ll be plenty of things going on to satisfy your Howard cravings.

The Robert E. Howard Days 2010 Information Page will be updated soon, and we’ll keep you posted as we revise it along the way. I wanted to get y’all to be thinking about the warmer days coming, filled with that good REH Fellowship we partake of every year. In the meantime, most of the basic information is still on the ‘09 version (like hotels & such), so check that out. (A heads up: the folks who run the 36 West Motel in Cross Plains asked us this past HD to not contact them until March 1st for reservations, so be sure to mark that on your calendar – don’t everyone call at once!)

So start making your plans, check flight info, gather items to send to the Silent Auction and get ready for the Best Two Days in Howard Fandom.

Visit the REHUPA website for the full schedule of events and registration details.

Tantor Media: Bran Mak Morn - Now available!
From Robert E. Howard's fertile imagination sprang some of fiction's greatest heroes, including Conan the Cimmerian, King Kull, and Solomon Kane. But of all Howard's characters, none embodied his creator's brooding temperament more than Bran Mak Morn, the last king of a doomed race.

In ages past, the Picts ruled all of Europe. But the descendants of those proud conquerors have sunk into barbarism...all save one: Bran Mak Morn, whose bloodline remains unbroken. Threatened by the Celts and the Romans, the Pictish tribes rally under his banner to fight for their very survival, while Bran fights to restore the glory of his race.

This collection gathers together all of Howard's published stories featuring Bran Mak Morn: "Men of the Shadows," "Kings of the Night," "A Song of the Race," "Worms of the Earth," "The Dark Man," and "The Lost Race."
