"The Complete Captain Combat" by Barry Barton

While Death flies the Swastika across the bloody skies of World War II one American pilot stands before the pendulum of history! Amidst the vivid flames of the European conflict, Bill Combat has made it his personal mission to bring down the German Fuhrer and his Nazi henchmen. He knows first hand the ruthlessness of the Nazis, for they had already murdered his mother and uncle. And now he finds himself in the #1 spot on the Nazi's "Most Wanted" list. But Captain Combat has vowed that when the battle smoke clears, freedom and dignity will reign while Nazi evil shall be banished from the earth!

The Captain Combat stories were originally published bi-monthly from March to August 1940, over a year before America would be thrust into the Second World War. Age of Aces Books has gathered together all three of Barry Barton’s dynamic and thrilling novels of modern war into one volume for the first time.

"The Complete Captain Combat" is a 386 page, 6x9 trade paperback for $16.99. Like all Age of Aces Books, it will be available from Amazon

New this week:

“The Sky Devil’s Son” by Harold F. Cruickshank from the July 1931 BATTLE STORIES
Lieutenant Dan Marsh was a flying hellion, but he had a problem to solve that demanded more than flaming victories over master pilots of the Hun. He was the son of the Sky Devil, the famous Hellcat from number 10 Squadron, and the old man had  made it clear that the Sky Devil’s son was not welcome there. While this story features a character named "Sky Devil" by Harold F. Cruickshank, it has no connection to Cruickshank’s stories published in our Age of Aces book “The Sky Devil: Hell’s Skipper”.

“They Had What It Takes – Part 4: Captain Frank Hawks” by Alden McWilliams from the May 1937 FLYING ACES

Alden McWilliams’ illustrated tribute to the pioneer fliers of the early days of aviation was called “They Had What it Takes”, and this week we bring you the fourth installment, which appeared in the May 1937 Flying Aces. It features the record smashing exploits of Captain Frank Hawks. Next week’s part five is McWilliams’ piece on Howard Hughes, who he called “The Scientist of Speed”.

Clive Cussler: THE SPY - Available in bookstores June 1st!
Set in 1908, bestseller Cussler and Scott's action-packed third adventure featuring Isaac Bell, head operative of the Van Dorn Detective Agency, leaves behind the railroad theme of the first two books (The Chase and The Wrecker), focusing instead on the espionage-riddled world of warship and armament manufacturing in the buildup to WWI.

It is 1908, and international tensions are mounting as the world plunges toward war. When a brilliant American battleship gun designer dies in a sensational apparent suicide, the man's grief-stricken daughter turns to the legendary Van Dorn Detective Agency to clear her father's name. Van Dorn puts his chief investigator on the case, and Isaac Bell soon realizes that the clues point not to suicide but to murder. And when more suspicious deaths follow, it becomes clear that someone-an elusive spy-is orchestrating the destruction of America's brightest technological minds... and the murders all connect to a top- secret project called Hull 44.

But that is just the beginning. As the intrigue deepens, Bell will find himself pitted against German, Japanese, and British spies, in a mission that encompasses dreadnought battleships, Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet, Chinatown, Hell's Kitchen, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Isaac Bell has certainly faced perilous situations before, but this time it is more than the future of his country that's at stake- it's the fate of the world.

Mexico's ruling party, the ultranationalist Mexica Tenochca, is intent on finding that artifact as well, because it contains a secret that could destroy the party utterly.

Through Tanzania and Zanzibar, into the rainforests of Madagascar, and across the Indian Ocean to Indonesia and the legendary site of the 1883 Krakatoa explosion, the Fargos and their ruthless opponents pursue the hunt-but only one can win. And the penalty for failure is death.

It's scheduled to be published May 28, 2011 -- which would have been Fleming's 103rd birthday. It comes nearly 60 years after the publication of "Casino Royale," the first novel to feature 007. Unlike Sebastian Faulks' centenary novel, Devil May Care, Project X will be set in the present day.
It will be published by Hodder & Stoughton in Britain and Simon & Schuster in the United States.

Deaver has sold more than 20 million copies of novels worldwide. "The Bone Collector," was made into a film in 1999, with Denzel Washington playing Rhyme and Angelina Jolie. His latest novel, "The Burning Wire," will be released in the USA and Canada on June 1, and in the UK and Ireland on July 22.

The Big Book of Bronze #3 - Article contributions!
This is my annual offer for article and picture contributions to The Big Book of Bronze.  Several members of Flearun contributed last year to the BBoB2 and I would like to thank everyone who did or even contemplated contributing.  BBoB2 was a huge success and an unbelievable source for new Doc information.

The Big Book of Bronze #3 will be published in November 2010 and contributions need to be made by August.  That still leaves you plenty of time to develop an idea and flesh an article out if you are interested in being a part of this Doc Savage project.

Many of our group members are writers and are quit verbose.  Here is your chance to show off your writing talents on some of the Doc subjects that you like best.  Many of you contributed to the "How I Discovered Doc Savage" book project of a few years ago and your Doc article submissions would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to extend the offer to our outside-the-USA members.  Your perspective on Doc would be a welcome addition.   Let's make the BBoB3 representative of the Doc community and Flearunners are just the people to do it!

I can be contacted at JRyanDS@aol.com with any questions or with your submission.

Blood ‘n’ Thunder #26 - Now available!
Blood ‘n’ Thunder #26 weighs in at 108 pages and is packed with the usual array of articles, departments, illustrations, and advertisements.  The Spring 2010 issue begins with a “Convention Corner” update on this year’s PulpFest.   “Tricks of the Trade” reprints a 1943 Writer’s Digest article by G. T. Fleming-Roberts, who describes the various gimmicks he used to plot his pulp mystery yarns.  “Cliffhanger Classics” presents a beginner’s guide to collecting movie serials, featuring scans of many rare photos and posters. “Adventurous Airwaves” offers the second and final part of a lengthy excerpt from an excellent new book on the Green Hornet radio show, written by Martin Grams and Terry Salomonson. It includes newly uncovered publicity photos taken in 1937 with members of the original cast.

Feature articles include “A Chronology of Clubfoot,” in which Daniel J. Neyer exhaustively analyzes the all-but-forgotten series of adventure/espionage novels written in the years between the two World Wars by British author Valentine Williams; “Hopalong Cassidy: Birth of a Legend,” Ed Hulse’s comparison of the first Hoppy movie to the 1910 Clarence E. Mulford novel from which it was adapted; and “Unholy Jitters: Sex and Sadism in the Red Circle Horror Pulps,” reprinted by popular demand from the long out-of-print second issue of BnT.  The issue closes with “Seven Doughty Doughs,” a lengthy Arthur Guy Empey novelette reprinted from the January 1931 issue of Battle Stories.

Please make your checks or money orders payable to Ed Hulse and send to him at 2467 Route 10 East, Bldg. 15, Apt. 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.  Ed also accepts Paypal payments at bnteditor@yahoo.com.

Hopefully that means this title will be placed on the fast track for publication.

Malcolm Edwards, Deputy CEO and Publisher of the Orion Publishing Group Ltd, said: “I am pleased that we are working together with Paradox Entertainment going into the future, and look forward to many exciting publications.”

Robert E. Howard was a pulpwriter who turned his hand to everything from historical adventure and detective stories to Western and boxing fiction - and invented the genre now known as sword-and-sorcery: it is for these tales of heroic fantasy and horror that he is best remembered. In the pages of WEIRD TALES and other pulp magazines his mighty heroes - the vengeful Puritan swashbuckler Solomon Kane, Kull, King of Atlantis, Bran Mak Morn, the last chieftain of the Picts, followed later by Conan the Cimmerian and many others. Following on from the success of THE COMPLETE CONAN, this companion volume will contain Robert E. Howard stories featuring Conan's brothers-in-arms, collected together in chronological order, as fresh and atmospheric today as when they were first published in the pulp magazines of more than eighty years ago. Helen had been mauled by an unusually large and vicious lion while they were big game hunting in Africa. But now, Pendergast learns that her rifle-her only protection from the beast-had been deliberately loaded with blanks. Who could have wanted Helen dead...and why?

With Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta's assistance, Pendergast embarks on a quest to uncover the mystery of his wife's murder. It is a journey that sends him deep into her past where he learns much that Helen herself had wished to keep hidden. Helen Pendergast had nursed a secret obsession with the famed naturalist-painter John James Audubon, in particular a long-lost painting of his known as the Black Frame.

As Pendergast probes more deeply into the riddle-the answer to which is revealed in a night of shocking violence, deep in the Louisiana bayou-he finds himself faced with an even greater question: who was the woman he married?

Loki House - New pulp reprint publisher!
This is to announce the existence of Loki House, a new publishing venture specializing in pulp-type fiction, ranging from dime novels through the end of the pulp era. Although much of our initial output will be science fiction or fantasy (and their various sub-genres), we will also be publishing adventure, horror and occult fiction, westerns and other genres. At the present time, we have no plans to attempt the hero genre (such as Doc Savage, the Shadow, the Spider, etc.), as they are very well represented already by other publishing houses.

For the next two months, we will be issuing pulp "replica" editions. These are far different than what we will concentrate on, but are a logical progression. Under the Munin Press imprint, we will issue over the next month to two months a series of "replicas" of pulp novels, quite a few unavailable previously. These are comb-bound (some call it spiral, although this is plastic, not metal), which allows for easy reading of the two-column pulp text and flat opening with no damage--a superior step over those editions which, essentially, just copy the pages, then staple them. The cover or covers are printed on high-quality photo paper, stiffened front and back with card stock sheets for more durability beneath the covers. The front covers are full-color reproductions of pulp covers or the art therefrom, the rear covers being either other applicable full-color covers, black and white line drawings, or blank sheets of cardstock. The interiors are very clear black & white reproductions of the pulp pages--the clearest anyone who has been shown them has ever seen.

Anywhere from two to twenty titles will be made available per week, most orders shipping within 24 to 48 hours of receipt of payment, the exceptions being weekends and holidays, which may stretch to 3 to 4 days from payment reception to shipment. We will accept PayPal, plus postal or bank-issued money orders for payment; no personal checks. Ordering info appears at the end of this release. Media Mail shipping is $3.00. All books will be packaged very securely. Priority Mail shipping is available for those who wish to spend the money (the cost of Priority Mail shipment will be based on weight, and cannot be nailed down until we receive the order). Insurance, tracking, and so on are available at standard Post Office prices--check with your local office, or online.

At least some of these "replicas" will contain extras. For example, our edition of THE RADIO WAR by Ralph Milne Farley, contains the "missing" first chapter--cut by the editors of ARGOSY, and our release of THE RADIO FLYERS by the same author (interior finished, but held up waiting on the full color cover art) features an article by the author from a November 1939 fanzine which not only connects the idea of the "inner world" concept of both Farley and Edgar Rice Burroughs to one particular non-fiction book, but also contains the text of a letter from Burroughs to Farley confirming the fact. In most cases, however, only the covers and the stories are included.

Loki House's first trade paperbacks and hardcovers are due in time for Pulpfest in Columbus.

At the end of July, production on the
pulp "replica" editions will cease, which means that only those who order before then will have copies.

As stripped down as these "replicas" are, the trade paper and hardcovers will each contain many extras, including missing text, author biographies and their relations (at least thematically) to other contemporary authors, even short stories or short novels, and will not be "replicas", except that they will exactly follow the text of either the magazine versions or the earliest book versions available--and in cases where there are significant differences between the two texts, both will be included in the same volume, along with an article which compares them. Some series will be issued two and three novels per volume (an example is the first three Miles Cabot novels by Ralph Milne Farley, which will be issued in one volume). Where possible, the original magazine or dust jacket art will be adapted, but we also have artists ready. At the beginning, there will be no interior illustrations, primarily to keep down costs to the consumer, although special "Collector's Hardcovers" (in the same size and similar type point as McClurg first editions, Grossett and Dunlap reprints and so on) with ALL the bells and whistles will eventually be available, but probably not before 2011.  These may be as limited as 100 sales of each title.

Our website should be up within two weeks.

The following are the "replica" titles available this week for immediate order and shipping:
THE RADIO WAR by Ralph Milne Farley (includes the "missing" first chapter)/$22.50
THE IMMORTALS by Ralph Milne Farley/$25.00
THE RADIO MAN by Ralph Milne Farley/$20.00
THE RADIO BEASTS by Ralph Milne Farley/$25.00
THE RADIO PLANET by Ralph Milne Farley/$25.00
PALOS OF THE DOG STAR PACK by J. U. Giesy/$25.00
THE MOUTHPIECE OF ZITU by J. U. Giesy/$25.00
JASON SON OF JASON by J. U. Giesy/$25.00
THE MOON POOL
(contains the magazine versions of "The Moon Pool" and THE CONQUEST OF THE MOON POOL)/$25.00
THE GIRL IN THE GOLDEN ATOM by Ray Cummings
(contains the magazine versions of "The Girl In the Golden Aton" and THE PEOPLE OF THE GOLDEN ATOM)/$25.00
PRINCESS OF THE ATOM (sequel to the above) by Ray Cummings/$25.00

All of these use the earliest sources we have available--in almost all cases, ALL-STORY, ARGOSY ALL-STORY, and ARGOSY serial versions and covers. If the exact source matters, please inquire, and we will let you know the source.

Orders of three titles or more will receive discounts, escalating with the number of titles ordered. All orders of five or more will receive free Media Mail shipping. Shipping is $3.00 for the first title, plus $1.00 for each additional title up to the point an order is eligible for free shipping. Please contact us at the email below if you wish Priority Mail or Express Mail (overnight) shipping for prices. All other options offered by the Post Office (insurance, tracking, etc.) are charged at the exact rate used by the Post Office. Non-U.S. orders should contact our email for costs of international shipping.

Quatermain - New feature film in the works!
Sam Worthington has recently taken on Terminators, survived on Pandora and battled mythical gods. Now, he's ready to become another literal hero in DreamWorks' sci-fi take of Quatermain, based on the hero from Haggard's King's Solomon's Mines. Heat Vision reports the actor has been set to star in the production which is being led by producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Mark Verheiden was the writer behind the first script. No director has been attached but expect that to change very soon.

Plot Concept: Allan Quatermain was the hero of “King’s Solomon’s Mines,” a Victorian adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, and its sequel, “Allan Quatermain.” In the first book, Quatermain leads an expedition into an unexplored region of Africa to find the brother of a friend as well as a fabled treasure of the lost mines.

DreamWorks’ version is set in a time in which humans have left Earth and sees Quatermain return to the planet from a sojourn in space, embarking on another “King Solomon’s Mines”-style adventure but on a planetwide scale.

Robert E. Howard Days - June 11 and 12!
REHupa
and the REH Foundation are working with Project Pride and gearing up for Robert E. Howard Days 2010.  Set aside June 11th and 12th, check your ammo and point your pony in the direction of Cross Plains, Texas, for at least two (and usually four) days chock full of Howard Mania.

The 2010 version of HD is geared towards The Illustrators of Robert E. Howard, and to that end we’ve invited Jim & Ruth Keegan to be our Guests of Honor. Jim & Ruth, in additon to being the fantastic Art Duo responsible for illustrating the Del Rey two-volume set of THE BEST OF ROBERT E. HOWARD and the upcoming EL BORAK The Desert Adventures, are the  creators of The Adventures of Two-Gun Bob, the wonderful biographical graphic comic strip that appears in every edition of a REH title from Dark Horse Comics.

There is much more planned on the art side of programming, including an REH art display, at least one book, original drawings from pros like the Keegans, Gary Gianni, Mark Schultz (et al) to be auctioned off at the Banquet and sold at the Swap Meet – all for the benefit of the Howard House and Project Pride.

All the regular Howard activities are there as well: The REH House is open to all (as is the Gift Shop), there’ll be Walking and Bus Tours, Celebration Banquet & Silent Auction, Swap Meet, Caddo Peak BBQ, plus the great fellowship we afford each other in gathering and Talking ’bout Bob. The Poetry Throwdown is coming back in a revised, insect-free fashion, and this year we will present the First Annual Robert E. Howard Foundation Awards. Also, not all the panels are slanted to REH art, so there’ll be plenty of things going on to satisfy your Howard cravings.

The Robert E. Howard Days 2010 Information Page will be updated soon, and we’ll keep you posted as we revise it along the way. I wanted to get y’all to be thinking about the warmer days coming, filled with that good REH Fellowship we partake of every year. In the meantime, most of the basic information is still on the ‘09 version (like hotels & such), so check that out. (A heads up: the folks who run the 36 West Motel in Cross Plains asked us this past HD to not contact them until March 1st for reservations, so be sure to mark that on your calendar – don’t everyone call at once!)

So start making your plans, check flight info, gather items to send to the Silent Auction and get ready for the Best Two Days in Howard Fandom.

Visit the REHUPA website for the full schedule of events and registration details.

THE CHRONICLES OF CONAN VOLUME 20: NIGHT OF THE WOLF AND OTHER STORIES
Coming in October!
Written by Michael Fleisher, art by John Buscema, Gary Kwapisz, Ernie Chan, Steve Leialoha, Bob Camp and Rudy Nebres.

Conan confronts some of his most difficult challenges yet when he faces down a werewolf who is being protected by the same tribe that it aims to destroy in "Night of the Wolf," and he finds a hidden Cimmerian valley filled with the vestiges of an ancient war in "Vale of Death." The wandering barbarian will also have to keep his wits about him if he is to keep from becoming a statue in a madwoman's collection in "The Cauldron of Doom!"

This volume collects Conan the Barbarian issues #151-#159, now with new colors, all of the original series covers, and a foreword by Ernie Chan complete with a brand new pinup!

200 pages, $18.99, in stores on October 13.

CONAN (1 FOR $1) - Coming in August!
Written by Kurt Busiek, penciled by Cary Nord, colroed by Dave Stewart.

Drawing on the original Robert E. Howard stories, the legend of Conan is brought to vivid life for the modern audience. Decades ahead of its time, Howard's stories can finally get the graphic treatment they deserve in this on going series.

28 pages, $1, in stores on August 25.

CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #24 - Coming in August!
Written by Tim Truman, penciled by Tomas Giorello, colored by Jose Villarrubia and Dave Stewart, cover by Cary Nord.

Conan and Olivia have escaped the terrible wrath of the armies of Turan by fleeing to a small island in the vast Vilayet Sea, but it seems that Conan cannot avoid all the enemies that he made as leader of the Kozaki raiders. The small island that he and Olivia have used to put some distance between them and the Turanian military has turned out to be an appealing hiding place for another group of outlaws -- the Red Brotherhood! Traveling only with the beautiful Olivia, and without an army of mercenaries at his back, Conan is no longer protected from their rage. However, they may not be the most dangerous adversaries Conan will have to face if he and Olivia are to get off the island in one piece! Large predators stalk the forest, and there is something much, much worse lurking within the ruins of an ancient civilization. Tim Truman, Tomas Giorello, and Jose Villarrubia continue their adaptation of Robert E. Howard's "Iron Shadows in the Moon."

40 pages, $2.99, in stores on August 18.

CONAN VOLUME 9: FREE COMPANIONS - Coming in October!
Written by Timothy Truman, art by Truman, Tomas Giorello and Joe Kubert, colored by Jose Villarrubia.

Kubert's very first sequential Conan work and illustrations by Cary Nord, Justin Sweet, and Joseph Michael Linsner highlight this latest collection of stories from Dark Horse's ongoing Conan the Cimmerian comic-book series. In his short career as a mercenary, young Conan has impressed both Princess Yasmela and military leader Lord Amalric, but an ambitious rogue prince arrives in Khoraja and blindsides Conan out of the comfortable, courtly situation he's found himself in. Not only is Conan's love affair with Yasmela going south, but rebel Prince Julion immediately challenges Conan's headstrong impulses and military plans, causing a rift between the battered-but-proud forces of Khoraja and Amalric's army of colorful mercs.

Collects Conan the Cimmerian #14 and #16-#21.

184 pages, $24.99, in stores on October 20.

For eighty years, fans of radio mystery have thrilled to the mocking tones of The Shadow's sinister laughter and to the daring adventures of radio's greatest crime-fighter. In this sound portrait of The Shadow, his mysterious origins are recalled in recorded interviews by Walter Gibson, who created Lamont Cranston and wrote 283 Shadow novels, and by Ken Roberts, the announcer who introduced The Shadow broadcasts for more than a decade. Bret Morrison remembers how he won the title role, while Grace Matthews and Gertrude Warner discuss the trials and tribulations of portraying Cranston's friend and companion, Margot Lane. The recollections of scriptwriter Sydney Slon, announcer Andre Baruch, organist Rosa Rio and program syndicator Charles Michelson are also heard, bringing to life memories of the great performers who cast a long "shadow" over the golden age of radio drama.

Dynamite Entertainment: THE LAST PHANTOM - Coming in August!
Dynamite Entertainment, under license from King Features syndicate, returns The Phantom to comic books this August with Alex Ross at the creative helm, Scott Beatty scripting and Eduardo Ferigato on art in the ongoing series.

As we begin the series, there is no Phantom. The historic line stops at Kit Walker the 21st, who has forsaken the mantle of The Ghost Who Walks and is enjoying a life with a growing family, while handling the day-to-day affairs of the Walkabout Foundation, a philanthropy created by one of the previous Walkers/Phantoms to help support charities benefiting Bengala, and the surrounding nations of continental Africa. The Walkabout Foundation was funded initially by pirate treasure from the very first Phantom's origins. The organization is symbolic of every young Walker's world-spanning journey from the Skull Cave to the "outside world," becoming educated and awaiting his destiny to one day take up the costume and crusade of the Phantom. Except that this Kit refused to take up the domino mask, rings, and Colt .45s of his father upon Kit Sr.'s death. Alex Ross' beautiful and dynamic vision promises to bring the concept of the Phantom to the 21st century, and it could not be in better hands.

"Funny Business" by Thomas McMorrow from All-Story Weekly, July 20, 1918
There's funny business indeed in the transaction - is it a sale or something else? - of a large case of brand cigars.
"Feature Snatch" by Robert Leslie Bellem from Dan Turner-Hollywood Detective, February, 1943
Featuring: Dan Turner
The idea was new - and was tops! Whoever thought of stealing a million dollar production before it was released? And behind it was the ransom angle, and there was blackmail, too. Sometimes a detective likes to get his teeth into a case like that. It's like matching your wits with a genius.

(2) The delay in receiving DETOUR TO OTHERNESS means that we will keep the "1951" combo active for the near future.  Details are on the HP homepage.

(3) We have closed the poll for the Haffner Press presentation at Pulpfest 2010 in Columbus this summer.  After discounting some electronic ballot-box stuffing from over-zealous (but well-meaning) fans, the declared winner is . . .  Leigh Brackett!  Be on the lookout for an update on our multimedia presentation: LEIGH BRACKETT: The Queen of Space Opera.

Leonaur Books - Now available!
Craig Kennedy—Scientific Detective
In Craig Kennedy the American nation might justifiably lay claim to their own Sherlock Holmes, for here is a detective whose activities projected him into the modern age. Where Conan Doyle’s famous character of a more gentle era relied on his superb powers of analysis, Kennedy is able to combine his own intellectual powers with the technological marvels of a new age. Arthur B. Reeve’s classic ‘Craig Kennedy’ stories began appearing in 1910, ensuring him of a place as a dominant crime fighter for the emerging 20th century. Kennedy is perhaps the natural evolution of the ‘great detective’ and the reader cannot but imagine that Holmes would have embraced his newly created techniques with equal enthusiasm. Here the reader will discover the application of lie detectors, gyroscopes, seismographs and an arsenal of other equipment, both real and imagined, to the solving of crimes and the bringing of criminals to justice.
This special Leonaur collection of the ‘scientific’ detective of Columbia University comprises seven substantial volumes, each in a colour coordinated cover. Leonaur hard backs are cloth bound, have fabric head and tail bands and feature gold foil lettering on their spines, so this may be the ideal way to collect and own the marvellous Craig Kennedy detective story series.

Craig Kennedy—Scientific Detective Volume 3 by Arthur B. Reeve
The Gold of the Gods & The War Terror
In the third volume, the reader will find two more complete books of intriguing detective stories to enjoy—The Gold of the Gods and The War Terror, both originally published in 1915. Within its pages enthusiasts can puzzle over many a dastardly crime and, of course, an equal number of brilliantly deduced solutions.

Craig Kennedy—Scientific Detective Volume 4 by Arthur B. Reeve
The Ear in the Wall & The Romance of Elaine
In the fourth volume, the reader will find two more complete books of intriguing detective stories to enjoy—The Ear in the Wall and The Romance of Elaine, both originally published in 1916. Within its pages enthusiasts can puzzle over many a dastardly crime and, of course, an equal number of brilliantly deduced solutions.

Craig Kennedy—Scientific Detective Volume 5 by Arthur B. Reeve
The Social Gangster & The Treasure-Train
In the fifth volume, the reader will find two more complete books of intriguing detective stories to enjoy—The Social Gangster and The Treasure-Train, both originally published in 1916 and 1917 respectively. Within its pages enthusiasts can puzzle over many a dastardly crime and, of course, an equal number of brilliantly deduced solutions.

More than Human: The Evolutionary Heroes of Robert E. Howard - Coming late 2010!
Approximately 350 pages, approximately $150.00 hardcover
A critical work by Justin Everett, Ph.D. and Deirdre Pettipiece, Ph.D.

Abstract:

Known best for the sword and sorcery stories he produced for the pulp fiction magazines of the 1930s, Robert E. Howard created a huge body of work that consisted of “around 3.5 million words” (Robert E. Howard Foundation, The Last of the Trunk), most of which focused on the creation of fantastic heroes of a depth and breadth unmatched by any writer before or since. Conan, King Kull, Solomon Kane and other complex characters populate civilizations Howard constructed and reconstructed in a wide-array of alternative worlds governed by competing principles of combat, survival, loyalty, and revenge. Tracing these heroes and the texts they occupy over the course of Howard’s interactions with evolutionary theories of human origin and behavior, Everett and Pettipiece reveal his dynamic and often conflicted engagement with ideas that changed the world. Howard’s interaction with the ideas of Darwin, Spencer, Freud and others who articulated fundamental principles of human behavior and social organization can be seen not only in the developing identities of his heroes, but also in the critical discussions he undertook with H.P. Lovecraft and other contemporaries. His intellectual engagement with some of the most important theories and philosophies of the 19th and 20th centuries demonstrates that Howard and his body of work are sufficiently representative of important themes and tropes to recognize him as part of the American canon. This volume therefore addresses the gap in the critical discussion of American literary production of the first half of the 20th century by presenting Howard and his heroes and the evolution they both undertook over the course of his active career.

Brief table of contents:
1. Preface
2. Forward by Terence McVicker
3. Introduction: Why American Literary Studies Need Robert E. Howard
4. Chapter one: Early Influences and the Little Blue Books
5. Chapter two: Engaging with Ideas: What Howard Read and Its Impact on Howard’s Emerging Philosophy
6. Chapter three: Sex and Sinews: Sexual Selection, Secondary Sex Characteristics and Howard
7. Chapter four: Howard’s Men and Women and Their Potential Sources in Literature and Life
8. Chapter five: Isolation and Community, Civilization and Barbarism: Binary Forces in Howard’s fiction
9. Chapter seven: Conclusions and Continuing Questions

Justin Everett, Ph.D. and Deirdre Pettipiece, Ph.D.
will be presenting on a panel at Howard Days.

The Magician Detective, and Other Weird Mysteries By Charles Fulton Oursler
Edited by John Locke

Fulton Oursler was one of the great editors of his time, ruling over the Macfadden publishing empire for two decades. He created the first true-crime magazine, True Detective Mysteries, and off-beat titles like Ghost Stories and True Strange Stories. He achieved national fame in the '30s as the editor of Liberty. But stage magic was his first love, and, in his heart, he remained a conjurer in a black cape and top hat. In this collection of early fiction, Oursler's bewitching imagination takes flight in tales of magic, murder and mesmerizing mystery. Apparitions, half-wits, secret panels, devious deceptions, lunatic asylums, warring magicians, criminal masterminds-it's all here.

Also featured is an in-depth exploration of the astonishing career of Fulton Oursler.

Thousands of Pulp Magazines in One Hall!

William F. Nolan will be the Guest of Honor at this year's convention!

Robert J. Randisi to Attend PulpFest!

Joining us at the 2010 PulpFest to help celebrate the 90th anniversaries of Black Mask’s debut and Max Brand’s first appearance in Western Story Magazine will be prolific author Robert J. Randisi, whom the publishing-industry trade journal Booklist has called "one of the last true pulp writers."

Randisi, who has for many years been active in both fan and pro circles, is the author of over 540 books, more than 50 short stories, and one screenplay. He has also edited 30 anthologies. A professional since 1982, when he began writing full time, Randisi has penned Westerns, mysteries, and stories in the horror, science fiction, and men’s-adventure genres. He has written yarns published under 15 different pseudonyms; as "J. R. Roberts" he created—and still writes—the long-running Gunsmith series, which currently numbers some 340 novels.

Randisi’s activities in the crime-fiction field have been many and varied. He edited a Writer’s Digest how-to book, Writing the Private Eye Novel, and for seven years was the mystery reviewer for the Orlando Sentinel. In 1982 he founded the Private Eye Writers of America and created the Shamus Award. In 1985 he co-founded Mystery Scene Magazine and the short-lived American Mystery Award; a couple years later he co-founded the American Crime Writer’s League. In 1993 he was awarded a Life Achievement Award at the Southwest Mystery Convention. Just last year he received the Life Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of America.

We look forward to having Bob Randisi join us in Columbus this July, and we trust that PulpFest attendees will be delighted to have him participate in our celebration of vintage pulp fiction.

PulpFest plans are coming together rapidly and dealers tables are going fast. Print advertising for the convention will be rolling out shortly, and we’re already distributing flyers and promotional postcards by the thousands at targeted conventions and book fairs in the Northeast and Midwest.

We’ll be making additional updates to this site in the weeks and months to come, so check back regularly for news about programming, auctions, and special events.

Join Bob Randisi, William F. Nolan, and hundreds of other fans
at this summer's celebration of the pulps, July 30 - August 1, in Columbus, Ohio.

Robert E. Howard Days 2010 - June 11 and 12!
REHupa and the REH Foundation are working with Project Pride and gearing up for Robert E.

Strange Wonders: A Collection of Rare Fritz Leiber Works - Coming in October!
By Fritz Leiber; Edited by Benjamin Szumskyj

In regards to Fritz Leiber, I believe that publication of such unpublished and uncollected works only strengthens his literary greatness. Through fragments, drafts and practice writings, we can clearly see the evolution from Leiber, the amateur, to Leiber, the professional. We are exposed to the clear way in which he dedicated his life to the written word and trained his abilities to produce the award-winning masterpieces that we read even today. While some may object to such a volume, I ask them this—is not the dream just as important as the empire that had been built from it? Are not the blueprints and sketches as impressive as the buildings and the artwork? We must place all this into perspective, and see that publishing such works is not a smear upon Leiber’s legacy. Rather, it completes a full circle. If we are asked to be thorough in the biography of an individual, then we must also do so for their bibliography.

ZOMBIES IN TIME AND SPACE (Various Authors) - Now Available!
In the far flung future of planet Earth, the perfectly round orb of a satellite hovered like a gleaming beacon in the sky. It was a new dawn of mankind, when the great scientists had finally harnessed the intricate mysteries of quantum physics as well as tachyon time travel. The breed of beings called "human" had eventually discovered a means to travel throughout time and space. However, there was a minor glitch in the system. After many eons, the greatest minds had conquered the apparent impossibility of time travel without borders. They could transmit matter to any time or place, but there was one border that they could never get beyond... No living organic matter could pass between the realms that make up the endless universe. And thus began the Zombie Institute of Time and Space. And so begins the chronicles of an exciting new concept in "undead" fiction. Seven thrilling tales of terror from some of today's most talented pulp fictioneers, including Robert Morganbesser, John L. French, S. Clayton Rhodes, David Burton and Ver Curtiss. Take a terrifying journey through time and space with the most hideous soldiers ever conceived by science! Cover Art by Nick Neocleous.
