Clive Cussler:
THE SPY - Available in bookstores June 1st! Set in 1908, bestseller Cussler and Scott's action-packed third adventure featuring Isaac Bell, head operative of the Van Dorn Detective Agency, leaves behind the railroad theme of the first two books (The Chase and The Wrecker), focusing instead on the espionage-riddled world of warship and armament manufacturing in the buildup to WWI. It is 1908, and international tensions are mounting as the world plunges toward war. When a brilliant American battleship gun designer dies in a sensational apparent suicide, the man's grief-stricken daughter turns to the legendary Van Dorn Detective Agency to clear her father's name. Van Dorn puts his chief investigator on the case, and Isaac Bell soon realizes that the clues point not to suicide but to murder. And when more suspicious deaths follow, it becomes clear that someone-an elusive spy-is orchestrating the destruction of America's brightest technological minds... and the murders all connect to a top- secret project called Hull 44. But that is just the beginning. As the intrigue deepens, Bell will find himself pitted against German, Japanese, and British spies, in a mission that encompasses dreadnought battleships, Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet, Chinatown, Hell's Kitchen, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Isaac Bell has certainly faced perilous situations before, but this time it is more than the future of his country that's at stake- it's the fate of the world. Hardcover: 448 pages Publisher: Putnam Adult ISBN-10: 0399156437 ISBN-13: 978-0399156434 $27.95 |

Mexico's ruling party, the ultranationalist Mexica Tenochca, is intent on finding that artifact as well, because it contains a secret that could destroy the party utterly. Through Tanzania and Zanzibar, into the rainforests of Madagascar, and across the Indian Ocean to Indonesia and the legendary site of the 1883 Krakatoa explosion, the Fargos and their ruthless opponents pursue the hunt-but only one can win. Big Book of Bronze #3 - Article contributions! This is my annual offer for article and picture contributions to The Big Book of Bronze. Several members of Flearun contributed last year to the BBoB2 and I would like to thank everyone who did or even contemplated contributing. That still leaves you plenty of time to develop an idea and flesh an article out if you are interested in being a part of this Doc Savage project. Many of our group members are writers and are quit verbose. Here is your chance to show off your writing talents on some of the Doc subjects that you like best. Many of you contributed to the "How I Discovered Doc Savage" book project of a few years ago and your Doc article submissions would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to extend the offer to our outside-the-USA members. Your perspective on Doc would be a welcome addition. Let's make the BBoB3 representative of the Doc community and Flearunners are just the people to do it! I can be contacted at JRyanDS@aol.com with any questions or with your submission.

Malcolm Edwards, Deputy CEO and Publisher of the Orion Publishing Group Ltd, said: “I am pleased that we are working together with Paradox Entertainment going into the future, and look forward to many exciting publications.” Robert E. Howard was a pulpwriter who turned his hand to everything from historical adventure and detective stories to Western and boxing fiction - and invented the genre now known as sword-and-sorcery: it is for these tales of heroic fantasy and horror that he is best remembered. In the pages of WEIRD TALES and other pulp magazines his mighty heroes - the vengeful Puritan swashbuckler Solomon Kane, Kull, King of Atlantis, Bran Mak Morn, the last chieftain of the Picts, followed later by Conan the Cimmerian and many others. Following on from the success of THE COMPLETE CONAN, this companion volume will contain Robert E. Howard stories featuring Conan's brothers-in-arms, collected together in chronological order, as fresh and atmospheric today as when they were first published in the pulp magazines of more than eighty years ago. Compiled by and with an Afterword by award-winning writer and editor Stephen Jones, and with cover image, frontispiece and internal pictures by the award-winning artist Les Edwards. Paperback: 750 pages Publisher: Gollancz ISBN-10: 0575089873 ISBN-13: 978-0575089877 |

CONAN THE
CIMMERIAN #24 - Coming in August! Written by Tim Truman, penciled by Tomas Giorello, colored by Jose Villarrubia and Dave Stewart, cover by Cary Nord. Conan and Olivia have escaped the terrible wrath of the armies of Turan by fleeing to a small island in the vast Vilayet Sea, but it seems that Conan cannot avoid all the enemies that he made as leader of the Kozaki raiders. The small island that he and Olivia have used to put some distance between them and the Turanian military has turned out to be an appealing hiding place for another group of outlaws -- the Red Brotherhood! Traveling only with the beautiful Olivia, and without an army of mercenaries at his back, Conan is no longer protected from their rage. However, they may not be the most dangerous adversaries Conan will have to face if he and Olivia are to get off the island in one piece! Large predators stalk the forest, and there is something much, much worse lurking within the ruins of an ancient civilization. Tim Truman, Tomas Giorello, and Jose Villarrubia continue their adaptation of Robert E. Howard's "Iron Shadows in the Moon." 40 pages, $2.99, in stores on August 18. CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #24 is solicited in the June PREVIEWS (Available May 26th). The Diamond Item Code is JUN100019. |

Loki
House - New pulp reprint publisher! This
is to announce the existence of Loki House, a new publishing venture specializing
in pulp-type fiction, ranging from dime novels through the end of the pulp era.
Although much of our initial output will be science fiction or fantasy (and their
various sub-genres), we will also be publishing adventure, horror and occult fiction,
westerns and other genres. At the present time, we have no plans to attempt the
hero genre (such as Doc Savage, the Shadow, the Spider, etc.), as they are very
well represented already by other publishing houses. For the next two months, we will be issuing pulp "replica" editions. These are far different than what we will concentrate on, but are a logical progression. Under the Munin Press imprint, we will issue over the next month to two months a series of "replicas" of pulp novels, quite a few unavailable previously. These are comb-bound (some call it spiral, although this is plastic, not metal), which allows for easy reading of the two-column pulp text and flat opening with no damage--a superior step over those editions which, essentially, just copy the pages, then staple them. The cover or covers are printed on high-quality photo paper, stiffened front and back with card stock sheets for more durability beneath the covers. The front covers are full-color reproductions of pulp covers or the art therefrom, the rear covers being either other applicable full-color covers, black and white line drawings, or blank sheets of cardstock. The interiors are very clear black & white reproductions of the pulp pages--the clearest anyone who has been shown them has ever seen. Anywhere from two to twenty titles will be made available per week, most orders shipping within 24 to 48 hours of receipt of payment, the exceptions being weekends and holidays, which may stretch to 3 to 4 days from payment reception to shipment. We will accept PayPal, plus postal or bank-issued money orders for payment; no personal checks. Ordering info appears at the end of this release. Media Mail shipping is $3.00. All books will be packaged very securely. Priority Mail shipping is available for those who wish to spend the money (the cost of Priority Mail shipment will be based on weight, and cannot be nailed down until we receive the order). Insurance, tracking, and so on are available at standard Post Office prices--check with your local office, or online. At least some of these "replicas" will contain extras. For example, our edition of THE RADIO WAR by Ralph Milne Farley, contains the "missing" first chapter--cut by the editors of ARGOSY, and our release of THE RADIO FLYERS by the same author (interior finished, but held up waiting on the full color cover art) features an article by the author from a November 1939 fanzine which not only connects the idea of the "inner world" concept of both Farley and Edgar Rice Burroughs to one particular non-fiction book, but also contains the text of a letter from Burroughs to Farley confirming the fact. In most cases, however, only the covers and the stories are included. Loki House's first trade paperbacks and hardcovers are due in time for Pulpfest in Columbus. At the end of July, production on the pulp "replica" editions will cease, which means that only those who order before then will have copies. As stripped down as these "replicas" are, the trade paper and hardcovers will each contain many extras, including missing text, author biographies and their relations (at least thematically) to other contemporary authors, even short stories or short novels, and will not be "replicas", except that they will exactly follow the text of either the magazine versions or the earliest book versions available--and in cases where there are significant differences between the two texts, both will be included in the same volume, along with an article which compares them. Some series will be issued two and three novels per volume (an example is the first three Miles Cabot novels by Ralph Milne Farley, which will be issued in one volume). Where possible, the original magazine or dust jacket art will be adapted, but we also have artists ready. At the beginning, there will be no interior illustrations, primarily to keep down costs to the consumer, although special "Collector's Hardcovers" (in the same size and similar type point as McClurg first editions, Grossett and Dunlap reprints and so on) with ALL the bells and whistles will eventually be available, but probably not before 2011. These may be as limited as 100 sales of each title. Our website should be up within two weeks. The following are the "replica" titles available this week for immediate order and shipping: THE RADIO WAR by Ralph Milne Farley (includes the "missing" first chapter)/$22.50 THE IMMORTALS by Ralph Milne Farley/$25.00 THE RADIO MAN by Ralph Milne Farley/$20.00 THE RADIO BEASTS by Ralph Milne Farley/$25.00 THE RADIO PLANET by Ralph Milne Farley/$25.00 PALOS OF THE DOG STAR PACK by J. U. Giesy/$25.00 THE MOUTHPIECE OF ZITU by J. U. Giesy/$25.00 JASON SON OF JASON by J. U. Giesy/$25.00 THE MOON POOL (contains the magazine versions of "The Moon Pool" and THE CONQUEST OF THE MOON POOL)/$25.00 THE GIRL IN THE GOLDEN ATOM by Ray Cummings (contains the magazine versions of "The Girl In the Golden Aton" and THE PEOPLE OF THE GOLDEN ATOM)/$25.00 PRINCESS OF THE ATOM (sequel to the above) by Ray Cummings/$25.00 All of these use the earliest sources we have available--in almost all cases, ALL-STORY, ARGOSY ALL-STORY, and ARGOSY serial versions and covers. If the exact source matters, please inquire, and we will let you know the source. Orders of three titles or more will receive discounts, escalating with the number of titles ordered. All orders of five or more will receive free Media Mail shipping. Shipping is $3.00 for the first title, plus $1.00 for each additional title up to the point an order is eligible for free shipping. Please contact us at the email below if you wish Priority Mail or Express Mail (overnight) shipping for prices. Quatermain - New feature film in the works! Sam Worthington has recently taken on Terminators, survived on Pandora and battled mythical gods. Now, he's ready to become another literal hero in DreamWorks' sci-fi take of Quatermain, based on the hero from Haggard's King's Solomon's Mines. Heat Vision reports the actor has been set to star in the production which is being led by producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Mark Verheiden was the writer behind the first script. No director has been attached but expect that to change very soon. Plot Concept: Allan Quatermain was the hero of “King’s Solomon’s Mines,” a Victorian adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, and its sequel, “Allan Quatermain.” In the first book, Quatermain leads an expedition into an unexplored region of Africa to find the brother of a friend as well as a fabled treasure of the lost mines. DreamWorks’ version is set in a time in which humans have left Earth and sees Quatermain return to the planet from a sojourn in space, embarking on another “King Solomon’s Mines”-style adventure but on a planetwide scale. Robert
E. Howard Days - June 11 and 12! REHupa and the REH Foundation are working with Project Pride and gearing up for Robert E. Howard Days 2010. Set aside June 11th and 12th, check your ammo and point your pony in the direction of Cross Plains, Texas, for at least two (and usually four) days chock full of Howard Mania. The 2010 version of HD is geared towards The Illustrators of Robert E. Howard, and to that end we’ve invited Jim & Ruth Keegan to be our Guests of Honor. Jim & Ruth, in additon to being the fantastic Art Duo responsible for illustrating the Del Rey two-volume set of THE BEST OF ROBERT E. HOWARD and the upcoming EL BORAK The Desert Adventures, are the creators of The Adventures of Two-Gun Bob, the wonderful biographical graphic comic strip that appears in every edition of a REH title from Dark Horse Comics. There is much more planned on the art side of programming, including an REH art display, at least one book, original drawings from pros like the Keegans, Gary Gianni, Mark Schultz (et al) to be auctioned off at the Banquet and sold at the Swap Meet – all for the benefit of the Howard House and Project Pride. All the regular Howard activities are there as well: The REH House is open to all (as is the Gift Shop), there’ll be Walking and Bus Tours, Celebration Banquet & Silent Auction, Swap Meet, Caddo Peak BBQ, plus the great fellowship we afford each other in gathering and Talking ’bout Bob. The Poetry Throwdown is coming back in a revised, insect-free fashion, and this year we will present the First Annual Robert E. Howard Foundation Awards. Also, not all the panels are slanted to REH art, so there’ll be plenty of things going on to satisfy your Howard cravings. The Robert E. Howard Days 2010 Information Page will be updated soon, and we’ll keep you posted as we revise it along the way. I wanted to get y’all to be thinking about the warmer days coming, filled with that good REH Fellowship we partake of every year. In the meantime, most of the basic information is still on the ‘09 version (like hotels & such), so check that out. (A heads up: the folks who run the 36 West Motel in Cross Plains asked us this past HD to not contact them until March 1st for reservations, so be sure to mark that on your calendar – don’t everyone call at once!) So start making your plans, check flight info, gather items to send to the Silent Auction and get ready for the Best Two Days in Howard Fandom. Visit

Radio Spirits:
The Story of the Shadow - Now available! For eighty years, fans of radio mystery have thrilled to the mocking tones of The Shadow's sinister laughter and to the daring adventures of radio's greatest crime-fighter. In this sound portrait of The Shadow, his mysterious origins are recalled in recorded interviews by Walter Gibson, who created Lamont Cranston and wrote 283 Shadow novels, and by Ken Roberts, the announcer who introduced The Shadow broadcasts for more than a decade. Bret Morrison remembers how he won the title role, while Grace Matthews and Gertrude Warner discuss the trials and tribulations of portraying Cranston's friend and companion, Margot Lane. The recollections of scriptwriter Sydney Slon, announcer Andre Baruch, organist Rosa Rio and program syndicator Charles Michelson are also heard, bringing to life memories of the great performers who cast a long "shadow" over the golden age of radio drama. More than two hours of a behind the scenes audio documentary about this classic series is presented here, followed by four complete Shadow radio broadcasts starring Orson Welles, Bret Morrison, Bill Johnstone, Agnes Moorehead, Gertrude Warner, and Lesley Woods. Dynamite Entertainment:
THE LAST PHANTOM - Coming in August! Dynamite Entertainment, under license from King Features syndicate, returns The Phantom to comic books this August with Alex Ross at the creative helm, Scott Beatty scripting and Eduardo Ferigato on art in the ongoing series. As we begin the series, there is no Phantom. The historic line stops at Kit Walker the 21st, who has forsaken the mantle of The Ghost Who Walks and is enjoying a life with a growing family, while handling the day-to-day affairs of the Walkabout Foundation, a philanthropy created by one of the previous Walkers/Phantoms to help support charities benefiting Bengala, and the surrounding nations of continental Africa. The Walkabout Foundation was funded initially by pirate treasure from the very first Phantom's origins. The organization is symbolic of every young Walker's world-spanning journey from the Skull Cave to the "outside world," becoming educated and awaiting his destiny to one day take up the costume and crusade of the Phantom. Except that this Kit refused to take up the domino mask, rings, and Colt .45s of his father upon Kit Sr.'s death. Alex Ross' beautiful and dynamic vision promises to bring the concept of the Phantom to the 21st century, and it could not be in better hands. |

Please bear with us. That said, if you want your copy of WITH FOLDED HANDS shipped *now*, send us $3.00 via check or paypal to info@haffnerpress.com and we'll scoot your copy out to you. (2) The delay in receiving DETOUR TO OTHERNESS means that we will keep the "1951" combo active for the near future. Details are on the HP homepage. (3) We have closed the poll for the Haffner Press presentation at Pulpfest 2010 in Columbus this summer. After discounting some electronic ballot-box stuffing from over-zealous (but well-meaning) fans, the declared winner is . . . Leigh Brackett! Be on the lookout for an update on our multimedia presentation: LEIGH BRACKETT: The Queen of Space Opera. (4) TALES OF SUPER-SCIENCE FICTION (edited by Grand Master Robert Silverberg) ambles its way through production, and we can announce some of the authors whose stories are set to appear: Don Berry, Robert Bloch, J. F. Bone, A. Bertram Chandler (as George Whitely), Daniel F. Galouye, Tom Godwin, James E. Gunn, Alan E. Nourse, Charles W. Runyon, Robert Silverberg, Jack Vance, Robert Moore Williams. The cover art is by Frank Kelly Freas, and we are still securing rights to additional texts. |

Leonaur
Books - Now available! Craig Kennedy—Scientific Detective In Craig Kennedy the American nation might justifiably lay claim to their own Sherlock Holmes, for here is a detective whose activities projected him into the modern age. Where Conan Doyle’s famous character of a more gentle era relied on his superb powers of analysis, Kennedy is able to combine his own intellectual powers with the technological marvels of a new age. Arthur B. Reeve’s classic ‘Craig Kennedy’ stories began appearing in 1910, ensuring him of a place as a dominant crime fighter for the emerging 20th century. Kennedy is perhaps the natural evolution of the ‘great detective’ and the reader cannot but imagine that Holmes would have embraced his newly created techniques with equal enthusiasm. Here the reader will discover the application of lie detectors, gyroscopes, seismographs and an arsenal of other equipment, both real and imagined, to the solving of crimes and the bringing of criminals to justice. This special Leonaur collection of the ‘scientific’ detective of Columbia University comprises seven substantial volumes, each in a colour coordinated cover. Leonaur hard backs are cloth bound, have fabric head and tail bands and feature gold foil lettering on their spines, so this may be the ideal way to collect and own the marvellous Craig Kennedy detective story series. Craig Kennedy—Scientific Detective Volume 3 by Arthur B. Reeve The Gold of the Gods & The War Terror In the third volume, the reader will find two more complete books of intriguing detective stories to enjoy—The Gold of the Gods and The War Terror, both originally published in 1915. Within its pages enthusiasts can puzzle over many a dastardly crime and, of course, an equal number of brilliantly deduced solutions. Craig Kennedy—Scientific Detective Volume 4 by Arthur B. Reeve The Ear in the Wall & The Romance of Elaine In the fourth volume, the reader will find two more complete books of intriguing detective stories to enjoy—The Ear in the Wall and The Romance of Elaine, both originally published in 1916. Within its pages enthusiasts can puzzle over many a dastardly crime and, of course, an equal number of brilliantly deduced solutions. Craig Kennedy—Scientific Detective Volume 5 by Arthur B. Reeve The Social Gangster & The Treasure-Train In the fifth volume, the reader will find two more complete books of intriguing detective stories to enjoy—The Social Gangster and The Treasure-Train, both originally published in 1916 and 1917 respectively. Within its pages enthusiasts can puzzle over many a dastardly crime and, of course, an equal number of brilliantly deduced solutions.

More than Human: The Evolutionary Heroes
of Robert E. Howard - Coming late 2010! Approximately 350 pages, approximately $150.00 hardcover A critical work by Justin Everett, Ph.D. and Deirdre Pettipiece, Ph.D. Abstract: Known best for the sword and sorcery stories he produced for the pulp fiction magazines of the 1930s, Robert E. Howard created a huge body of work that consisted of “around 3.5 million words” (Robert E. Howard Foundation, The Last of the Trunk), most of which focused on the creation of fantastic heroes of a depth and breadth unmatched by any writer before or since. Conan, King Kull, Solomon Kane and other complex characters populate civilizations Howard constructed and reconstructed in a wide-array of alternative worlds governed by competing principles of combat, survival, loyalty, and revenge. Tracing these heroes and the texts they occupy over the course of Howard’s interactions with evolutionary theories of human origin and behavior, Everett and Pettipiece reveal his dynamic and often conflicted engagement with ideas that changed the world. Howard’s interaction with the ideas of Darwin, Spencer, Freud and others who articulated fundamental principles of human behavior and social organization can be seen not only in the developing identities of his heroes, but also in the critical discussions he undertook with H.P. Lovecraft and other contemporaries. His intellectual engagement with some of the most important theories and philosophies of the 19th and 20th centuries demonstrates that Howard and his body of work are sufficiently representative of important themes and tropes to recognize him as part of the American canon. This volume therefore addresses the gap in the critical discussion of American literary production of the first half of the 20th century by presenting Howard and his heroes and the evolution they both undertook over the course of his active career. Brief table of contents: 1. Preface 2. Forward by Terence McVicker 3. Introduction: Why American Literary Studies Need Robert E. Howard 4. Chapter one: Early Influences and the Little Blue Books 5. Chapter two: Engaging with Ideas: What Howard Read and Its Impact on Howard’s Emerging Philosophy 6. Chapter three: Sex and Sinews: Sexual Selection, Secondary Sex Characteristics and Howard 7. Chapter four: Howard’s Men and Women and Their Potential Sources in Literature and Life 8. Chapter five: Isolation and Community, Civilization and Barbarism: Binary Forces in Howard’s fiction 9. Chapter seven: Conclusions and Continuing Questions

Robert E. Howard Days 2010 -
June 11 and 12! Visit the
REHUPA website
for the full schedule of events and registration details.
Strange
Wonders: A Collection of Rare Fritz Leiber Works - Coming
in October! By Fritz Leiber; Edited by Benjamin Szumskyj In regards to Fritz Leiber, I believe that publication of such unpublished and uncollected works only strengthens his literary greatness. Through fragments, drafts and practice writings, we can clearly see the evolution from Leiber, the amateur, to Leiber, the professional. We are exposed to the clear way in which he dedicated his life to the written word and trained his abilities to produce the award-winning masterpieces that we read even today. While some may object to such a volume, I ask them this—is not the dream just as important as the empire that had been built from it? Are not the blueprints and sketches as impressive as the buildings and the artwork? We must place all this into perspective, and see that publishing such works is not a smear upon Leiber’s legacy. Rather, it completes a full circle. If we are asked to be thorough in the biography of an individual, then we must also do so for their bibliography. Limited: $60 Trade: $40 ISBN: 978-1-59606-324-2 Length: 280 pages (Trade Edition); 344 pages (Limited Edition)
