Visit them at http://www.ageofaces.net/category/age-of-aces-presents/ New this week: "Hawks From the Smoke" by Arch Whitehouse from the August 1939 FLYING ACES In this adventure, two of Arch Whitehouse’s most popular flying duos team up to foil a Japanese invasion of the Phillipines. Tug Hardwick and Beansie Bishop are joined by Coffin Kirk and his simian assistant, Tank. Peculiar white wisps on the ocean below! What sinister thing did they hide? Tug had to know. But Beansie had no time for that mystery—what with gun-bristling Mitsubishis swarming down the skies to face his twin Brownings. What’s more, he now was encountering a mystery of his own. For a strangely-marked Breda had suddenly dived in among those vengeful “Rising Sun” fighters. And the gunner aboard that Breda was too efficient to be human!
Airship27 Productions: WEIRD HORROR TALES Author Michael Vance is interviewed by author and radio DJ Mark Justice on an internet radio show called The Pod of Horror, now in its fifth year. This free broadcast is available on the popular website Horror World on computers at: http://www.horrorworld.org/poh.htm. The subject of the interview is a new novel by Vance, “Weird Horror Tales”, that is an homage to pulp magazines from the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s. “My stories are founded on the premise that there is something larger than our narrow view of reality,” said Vance. “Each interconnected story shares setting, history, prominent families, and a macro plot. The stories also focus on the Azrealites, a religious cult that works tirelessly to reinstate that ‘Other’ on Earth through science and the occult.” These stories about the fictionalized town of “Light's End” in Maine have been published in dozens of magazines in three countries, including “Dark Corridor”, and have also been recorded by renowned actor William (“Murder She Wrote”) Windom. Free photographs of Light’s End are available at http://www.flickr.com/photos/miklvance/. Vance’s influences on these stories are writers H. P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, William Faulkner, Alfred Hitchock movies, and The Twilight Zone television series. The cover artist, Keith Birdsong is famous for his extremely realistic covers for “Star Trek” novels, on Hamilton Collection collectors’ plates, and on U.S. Postage stamps. The interior illustrations are by artist Earl Geier, best known for his horror, fantasy and science fiction artwork. He has illustrated role playing games, books, magazines, and comic books. Vance has written for national and international magazines, and as a syndicated columnist and cartoonist in over 500 newspapers. His history book, “Forbidden Adventures”, has been called a "benchmark in comics history”. He briefly ghosted an internationally syndicated comic strip, wrote his own strip and several comic books. He is listed in the Who's Who of American Comic Books and Comic Book Superstars. The publisher of “Weird Horror Tales”, Cornerstone Book Publishers also publishes Masonic and esoteric books, selected pulp fiction, art literature, limited children's books, and poetry collections. For more information about Cornerstone, go to http://www.cornerstonepublishers.com. Airship 27 packages anthologies and novels for Cornerstone in the pulp magazine tradition. In the past, Airship 27 has released “Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective”, a series of “Captain Hazzard” pulp thrillers, and more pulp fiction in “The Green Lama”. Black Matrix
Publishing LLC: ENCOUNTERS MAGAZINE #1 - Now available! In the spirit of the pulp magazines of the last century, Black Matrix is in the process of launching four magazines full of action, adventure, romance and suspense. ENCOUNTERS: Contemporary or dark fantasy, scifi, horror and stories with a paranormal twist. We throw it all in the mix, shake well, and see what exotic brew emerges in every issue. REALMS: If more traditional fantasy is your forte, this is where you'll want to spend some time. We need content in the same vein as Tolkien, Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan and David Eddings. NIGHT CHILLS: If it lurks in the dark and creeps through your yard late at night, we want it. Please, no psychological horror. We want stories that remind us of the best creature oriented tales of Dean Koontz, F. Paul Wilson, Peter Straub or "The Damned Thing," by Ambrose Bierce. OUTER REACHES: This one is for all of you who think we have cooled our heels for way too long on this little mud-ball we call Earth. We're looking for stories of high adventure in the deepest reaches of space. Whether it's good old-fashioned space opera such as early Robert Heinlein or grand visions such as the writings of Stephen Baxter, we want to see it and everything in between. ARTISTS: We need some quality art for color covers and black & white interiors. We're looking for images in the spirit of the old pulp magazines such as Astounding, Galaxy, Amazing Stories and Fantastic; something that reflects the action and adventure of the stories in each magazine. Check out our art guidelines here. The first issue of ENCOUNTERS MAGAZINE is now available! Magazine, 8 x 10, 104 pages, $9.95 The first issue of REALMS is nearing completion with the first issue of OUTER REACHES about 2 weeks behind it. Conan's
Brethren: The Complete Collection - Delayed until 2010!
As a result of a threatened lawsuit over trademark infringement, publication was pushed back until 2010. Although the page sheets were printed, only copies of the export trade paperback were bound-up, and these were not commercially distributed. Robert E. Howard was a pulpwriter who turned his hand to everything from historical adventure and detective stories to Western and boxing fiction - and invented the genre now known as sword-and-sorcery: it is for these tales of heroic fantasy and horror that he is best remembered. In the pages of WEIRD TALES and other pulp magazines his mighty heroes - the vengeful Puritan swashbuckler Solomon Kane, Kull, King of Atlantis, Bran Mak Morn, the last chieftain of the Picts, followed later by Conan the Cimmerian and many others. Following on from the success of THE COMPLETE CONAN, this companion volume will contain Robert E. Howard stories featuring Conan's brothers-in-arms, collected together in chronological order, as fresh and atmospheric today as when they were first published in the pulp magazines of more than eighty years ago. Compiled by and with an Afterword by award-winning writer and editor Stephen Jones, and with cover image, frontispiece and internal pictures by the award-winning artist Les Edwards.

T. Joshi The work of H. P. Lovecraft continues to inspire many of the leading contemporary authors of horror and the supernatural. In this anthology, S. T. Joshi, the world's leading expert on Lovecraft and the author of the lively treatise The Rise and Fall of the Cthulhu Mythos, tries his hand at assembling a modern-day Lovecraftian anthology, casting his net on both sides of the Atlantic and producing a volume that radically expands our notions of what constitutes "Lovecraftian" fiction. Caitlín R. Kiernan, Brian Stableford, and Nicholas Royle produce innovative deconstructions of Lovecraft's "Pickman's Model" and "The Hound." Michael Shea transfers the Cthulhu Mythos to San Francisco, Laird Barron and Philip Haldeman set their Lovecraftian horrors in the Pacific Northwest, and Donald R. Burleson and William Browning Spencer enliven the parched Southwest with cosmic monsters. Ramsey Campbell, Jonathan Thomas, Jason Van Hollander, and others make Lovecraft himself a character in tales of cosmic menace, while David J. Schow and Michael Cisco ring new changes on the Lovecraftian concept of the forbidden book. These and other stories by Michael Marshall Smith, Norman Partridge, W. H. Pugmire, Joseph S. Pulver, Sr., Darrell Schweitzer, Donald R. and Mollie L. Burleson, Sam Gafford, and Adam Niswander all reveal how vital and vibrant the Lovecraftian idiom remains . . . and how terrifying. Age of Aces
Presents - Downloadable PDF Air
War pulp stories! Age of Aces Books is now offering a new feature on their Web site called "Age of Aces Presents". You can now download free PDF versions of some great Air War pulp stories. Visit them at http://www.ageofaces.net/category/age-of-aces-presents/ New this week: "Destroyer" by Steve Fisher, a full length novel from 1941 Here is the starkly realistic story of an obsolete American submarine in war time—trapped by the thundering herd of depth-charging destroyers overhead. . . . The poignant, profoundly emotional account of men inside the firing pits of a battleship’s 14-inch turret guns—fighting the last desperate fight for Democracy. It is the love story of a young naval officer, a girl correspondent, and an embittered novelist who has been to all the wars. The story is unfolded during what may be the most important hour in American history. The United States has declared war on Germany, Italy, and Japan. The invading navies of these countries prepare for an advance on the Panama Canal. A terrific naval battle takes place. The result hangs in balance. And the suspense in this story is tremendous as the action shifts from the high seas where the U.S. Fleet is battling the enemy might—to intrigue-ridden Cristobal, where foreign agents strive to undermine the power of the U.S. in the Canal Zone, and where the unusual love story of the three principal characters reaches a surprise climax.

Hell
Is An Awfully Big City: Spine-Tingling Tales of Horror and Suspense -
Now available! The nine stories in this collection were created with the idea that every writer of Horror, which I consider to be my preferred genre, should create his take on the classic horror themes; the Vampire, the Werewolf, the invading Alien, the Monster. There will always be a place for these iconic horror themes in books, movies, and television shows. These stories have helped me become a more confident writer, primarily by allowing me to accept the fact I'm not a prolific writer; but a man who writes in spurts of creativity (Seven of the collection's stories here were written in two burst of eight and eleven days, respectively) and each tale began with nothing more than a generic idea in a note pad. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them, and I hope, like the first sentence is only designed to force you to read the second sentence; the stories in this collection will force you to read those I create in the future.

Secret
Agent X - New Yahoo Newsgroup! Secret Agent X originated in the pulp magazines in February 1934 and ran for five years, ending in March 1939 after 41 adventures. Published by A.A. Wyn’s Ace publishing house, the series was created by Paul Chadwick, then turned over to a variety of pulp writers, eventually ending with pulp scribe, George Thomas Fleming-Roberts. “X” fought everything from espionage agents to domestic crime lords. Touted as The Man of A Thousand Faces, he was constantly in disguise, and his true identity was never disclosed. His real face was only seen a couple of times. In the mid 1990s fan fiction stories began appearing by new writers, and continue to this day. This Site was created for those fans of the character, and discussion should be centered on both the series and the character, but may certainly cover other areas of the pulps, as well as new fiction. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Secret_Agent_X/

The Lone Ranger - Now available! THE LONE RANGER (1938) Featuring Lee Powell, Herman Brix and Victor "Chief Thunder Cloud" Daniels Complete, Unsubtitled, and in English This is a restored collectors edition. The original serial is still lost and portions of it may be gone forever. What you have here may be the closest approximation possible, however, of what the complete original looked and sounded like. Republic was apparently under contract to destroy the existing prints of the serial after their license on the character lapsed, and, according to Clayton Moore and others, were burned on the Republic back lot. But some partially altered foreign-language release versions did survive. This project is an assembly of all the best-quality existing sound and picture elements from the original serial with replacement only of elements which are entirely missing today. Every shot is in the proper original sequence as far as that is possible to know and all original sound is included, with dubbing used only in spots where no original sound exists at all any more. The goal of this project was to assemble the closest thing to the original release possible from what exists, not to rework that material in any way. The image quality ranges from excellent and sharp to what might be termed decent 1980s Goodtimes Home Video quality, with virtually no scratches, very few splices, and good contrast. Chapter openings, recaps, and closings all look spectacular. The only negative here is that the transfer used for most of the chapter content is rather dated and low-resolution which makes the edition appropriate for watching on a smaller-size TV or computer and less appropriate for big-screen TV viewing. Robert E. Howard - Upcoming publications! Over at the Official Robert E. Howard Forum, Robert E. Howard scholar Mark Finn revealed that Robert E. Howard's boxing stories WILL be reprinted in the deluxe, annotated Hoops and Bells and Whistles treatment, by the Robert E. Howard Foundation. The current plans are for four books. No date was announced for the arrival of this collection. As announced at Howard Days this year, the Robert E. Howard Foundation's next book is entitled Sentiment: An Olio of Rarer Works. This is a collection of Howard’s humor and contemporary fiction, some non-fiction pieces, and a few other items of miscellanea. The gem of the collection is “Wild Water” which, after a conversation with Foundation members, will also appear in a future Western volume (it’s a tough story to place). Many of the other pieces are short, unfinished, and/or unpolished. Because of this, we’ll be printing a small run and would like to know just how many customers are interested in the first printing so we’ll know about how many to produce. The price will probably be the same as our other large volumes ($53 for members and $59 for non-members). Please email your interest to info@rehfoundation.org. Pre-orders are NOT being accepted at this time. The contents of Sentiment (which could still change a bit) are as follows:

Serial Vigilantes of Paperback
Fiction - Now available! An Encyclopedia from Able Team to Z-Comm By Bradley Mengel Rough justice has often been served in the pages of serial novels, notably beginning with Don Pendleton’s The Executioner in 1969. This is the first overview of the serial vigilante genre, which featured such hard-boiled protagonists as Nick Carter, Mark Stone, Jake Brand and Able Team among the 130 series that followed Pendleton’s novel. Serial vigilantes repeatedly take the law into their own hands, establishing and imposing their own moral standards, usually by force. The book examines the connections between the serial vigilante and the pulp hero that preceded him and how the serial vigilante has influenced a variety of tough guys, private eyes, spies and cops in different media. A complete bibliography for each series is featured. ISBN 978-0-7864-4165-5 appendices, bibliography, index Trade paperback, 7x10, 233 pages, $45 McFarland
