Age of Aces - Coming in November!

Coming in November From Age of Aces Books
"Satan's Playmates: The Adventures of Molloy and McNamara"

Mike Molloy and Tommy McNamara were the "Twin Terrors of the Western Front".
They flew as if they had been born in Spads, they drank like thirsty whales, and they'd fought by each other's side through every mile of air along the lines and in every bar from the Front to Paris. If there were no more pressing targets, they pounded each other to a pulp, for any reason at all, and were strangely happy.

Leading the 24th Pursuit Squadron across WWI Europe's blood red skies, Molloy and McNamara were the bane of the German Air Force. Their names and reputations were known wherever fighting men met with blazing guns or flying fists. Written by William Hartley, the twenty tales of Molloy and McNamara appeared in Dare-Devil Aces between 1936 and 1942. Age of Aces has collected the first eleven of them for this volume.

New this week:

“The Squadron in Scarlet” by Donald E. Keyhoe from the November 1931 SKY BIRDS
featuring “Cyclone” Bill Garrity and The Devildog Squadron
For months the grim spectre of that German staffel had stalked up and down the Front, dropping its sinister messages of death upon British and French squadrons. And now at last it struck at the flying Marines. For out of the cloud mists over that Devildog drome a white-winged German plane swooped low, and from it came the threat of doom—a black coffin holding the body of a Devildog pilot.

When a group of men and women throughout London begin exhibiting strange psychotic behavior, Dr. John Seward, from the Dracula affair, is brought into the case.  Faced with a mystery beyond his realm of experiences, he turns to Sherlock Holmes’ trusted companion, Dr. Watson, for help. Now available in hardcover!
Softcover edition coming soon!

371 pages
Limited edition hardcover (only 100 made) - $39.95

Written by pulp veteran Charles B. Stilson as a follow-up to his successful "Polaris of the Snows" trilogy, available for the first time in one volume.

In "A Man Named Jones," a very drunk Jones awakening to find a dead man under his table holding a large, raw emerald and the photograph of a lovely white women surrounded by Polynesians fiercely protecting her South Seas island from visitors. He vows to rescue the woman from her island prison, not knowing that the crew he's sailing with are as vicious a band of pirates imaginable.

"Land of the Shadow People" picks up the story some years later when Jones is blackmailed into once again searching for the source of the mysterious emerald. What he finds is a strange race of chameleon people desperate to preserve the secret of their existence. Written in a crisp, modern style these two novels will provide hours of enjoyment.

Altus Press - Coming soon!
A Man Named Jones ushers in a new sub-set of our book line: the Altus Press Lost Race Library. This will reprint material from this wonderful genre which was popularized by H. Rider Haggard and lasted until around 1920. Some of this material will be culled from the pulps, while others are taken directly from rare hardcovers. The inaugural wave of this series is comprised of four books, with Under the Andes being redesigned to match the Lost Race Library dress. The other two releases will be announced shortly.

Further pulp titles are coming soon, among them a collection of all of Arthur Leo Zagat’s Red Finger stories from the pages of Operator #5.
The Red Finger sagas ran in twelve exciting short stories, from October 1934 to March 1938. Several things made the character unique. First, spy series may have featured masters of disguise, like Secret Agent X, Operator #5, and The Eagle, but Red Finger actually wore a costume similar to the masked detective heroes like The Spider, Phantom Detective, The Shadow, etc. The other thing that made him unique, he wasn't a rich young playboy from Park Avenue. Ford Duane operated an old bookstore dealing in rare volumes, and lived in a tiny back room of the dusty establishment.

There are several other Popular Publications-owned titles coming as well, and they’ll be announced soon.

Centipede Press: Conversations with the Weird Tales Circle
Now available to order with the majority being released in late November
and early December.

Conversations with the Weird Tales Circle is a massive, oversize, celebration of the lives of H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, Frank Belknap Long, Seabury Quinn, E. Hoffmann Price, Henry Kuttner, C.L. Moore, Lee Brown Coye, Hannes Bok, August Derleth, Edmond Hamilton, Manly Wade Wellman, Fritz Leiber, Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch, Donald Wandrei, Mary Elizabeth Counselman, and many others. Each writer has their own section in the book, complete with a custom drawing of the author by noted artist Alex McVey.

The sections contain letters and essays by the writers, with many interviews and memoirs about the writers, often by other writers from the Circle. With dozens of color and black & white photographs, and many of the articles never before reprinted (several coming from 1930s and 1940s fanzines that are now very difficult to find), this is an important and illuminating look at a group of people that defined an era. There is also a lengthy article on Weird Tales cover art with full-color reprints on nearly fifty Weird Tales covers, many of them printed at full page size. Essential for every fantasy and horror fan.

The book is a large sewn hardcover measuring 7 × 12 inches, over two inches thick, with 754 pages, with an image by Stephen Hickman printed on the front cover cloth, and black cloth on the spines and back. The book is rounded, with head and tail bands, and a ribbon marker, with black endsheets.

Note: Howard scholar Mark Finn contributed a lot to the REH section of the book.

CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #15 - Arriving in comic shops November 4th!

Her pampered years of hedonistic pleasure behind her, the beautiful Akivasha spent centuries with desiccated mummies and skittering monsters, as a deep loneliness grew within her.

Now, something has awakened her from tedious ages of boredom. She immediately senses Conan's power and vitality when he steals into the temple, and she vows to take this Cimmerian warrior as her loveror at least have a good time killing him! Del Rey: EL BORAK AND OTHER DESERT ADVENTURES
By Robert E. Howard - Coming in March 2010!
Del Rey has posted the cover for the upcoming EL BORAK AND OTHER DESERT ADVENTURES.
The cover is painted by Jim and Ruth Keegan and depicts Howard’s Francis X. Gordon engaged in a dispute with a denizen of the desert wastes. Click here for a larger image of the cover painting.

Editor Rusty Burke previously announced the contents for the book that collects all of Howard's professional series desert adventures:

Francis X. Gordon ("El Borak"):
"Swords of the Hills" (REH's title for the story later published as "The Lost Valley of Iskander")
"The Daughter of Erlik Khan"
"Blood of the Gods"
"Sons of the Hawk" (REH's title for the story later published as "The Country of the Knife")
"Son of the White Wolf"
"Hawk of the Hills"
"Three-Bladed Doom" -  both versions: "long" and "short"

Kirby O'Donnell:
"Gold from Tartary" (published as "The Treasures of Tartary")
"Swords of Shahrazar"
"The Trail of the Blood Stained God"

Steve Clarney:
"The Fire of Asshurbanipal" (straight adventure version)

A slight change from previous books is letting more than one artist illustrate the book. Having depicted El Borak in vivid color in the REH art calendar a few years back, Jim & Ruth Keegan will be painting all color illustrations in the book, as well as art directing the project. All b/w illustrations will be made by Tim Bradstreet. Bradstreet is known for his distinctive style, once described by himself as 'stylistic photorealism' as his work combines the use of posed photography with pencils, inks and coloring. He is well-known for his comic book covers for The Punisher (Marvel) and Hellblazer (Vertigo/DC) and has also worked in movie projects, such as visual design for Blade 2 and poster art for the movie The Punisher.
Jim and Ruth Keegan's El Borak is shown at the right.

Howard also wrote numerous El Borak stories and fragments when he was very young.
These will be collected along with
adventures of Lal Singh and Gordon’s cousin, the Sonora Kid, in a companion volume to be published by The Robert E. Howard Foundation.

Archival-quality smythe-sewn hardcover

In 1961, Ballantine Books published BYPASS TO OTHERNESS, a paperback collection of some of Henry Kuttner's (and C. L. Moore's) best short stories.  Several selections were drawn from Kuttner's popular series such as the "Hogbens" (comedic otherworldly hillbillies living in America), "Gallagher Galloway" (scientist who invents technical marvels /only/ when intoxicated),  and the "Baldies" stories eventually collected in /Mutants.  BYPASS was projected as the first of *three* "Otherness" collections of Kuttner's short fiction.  RETURN TO OTHERNESS followed in 1962 with 8 more stories.  And then . . . nothing.  The third "Otherness" collection never appeared.  Now, almost fifty years later, Haffner Press announces DETOUR TO OTHERNESS: a massive hardcover assembling the contents of both BYPASS TO OTHERNESS and RETURN TO OTHERNESS, and adding 8 additional stories selected for their scarcity, quality, and sheer entertainment value.  Grand Masters Robert Silverberg and Frederik Pohl provide introductory and afterword materials to the book, and the whole affair is decorated with an unpublished painting by Richard Powers.

WITH FOLDED HANDS . . . AND SEARCHING MIND
The Collected Stories of Jack Williamson Volume Seven
ISBN: 978-1-893887-37-4
Foreword by Robert Silverberg; Cover art by Hubert Rogers
500+ pages, $40.00
Archival-quality smythe-sewn hardcover

The ambitious program to collect the short fiction of Grand Master Jack Williamson continues! The 15 tales in this penultimate volume cover Williamson's entry into the US Army in 1942 through to his very successful effort to integrate into the post-WWII science fiction market.

Featured is the 1948 3-part serial ". . . And Searching Mind," which Williamson re-wrote into his most famous work, The Humanoids. Other classics in this volume include the first "Humanoids" story, "With Folded Hands . . ."; "Breakdown," set in the same universe as his novel co-authored with James Gunn, Star Bridge; and his much-reprinted classic, "The Equalizer." Appearing in either book-form or hardcover for the first time are "Cold Front Coming," "Hocus-Pocus Universe," "The Hitch-Hiker's Package," and "You Can't Beat a Marine." Also included is Williamson's afterword with his recollections on the genesis of these tales and the World War II-era science fiction field.

As with previous volumes in this series, the full-color endpapers reproduce the original magazine covers (with artwork by pulp masters including Hubert Rogers, Earle K. Bergey and Frank R. Paul) of the stories herein, and the binding is designed to match the 1940s editions of Williamson's works published by Fantasy Press. The book is smythe-sewn, bound in full cloth, and printed on acid-neutral paper, with full-color endpapers reproducing the original pulp magazine cover art.

With a foreword by legendary author, editor, and long-time friend of Williamson (and fellow Science Fiction Grand Master), Robert Silverberg, With Folded Hands . . . And Searching Mind represents the changing state of mid-20th Century American Science Fiction and continues the documentation of Williamson's unparalleled career.

John Hart R. I. P.
John Hart (1917-2009), the man known as the “other” Lone Ranger, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2009 with his family at his side.

His long career in films began in the Cecil B DeMille production of The Bucaneer in 1938.  Playing bit parts until his enlistment in the War in 1941, he returned to Hollywood and won the role of Jack Armstrong in 1947 for Jack Armstrong: The All-American Boy .   The departure of Clayton Moore from the Lone Ranger TV series led to his being cast in 1953 as the Masked Man for 54 episodes.  With the return of Moore, he continued to act on television in the highly popular Hawkeye and The Last of the Mohicans with Lon Chaney.

A 1955 Columbia serial cast him as Captain Africa , which originally was written as a Phantom project.  He continued to act until 1982, with his last two appearances as the Lone Ranger on Happy Days and The Greatest American Superhero.  Behind the scenes he worked on QuincyM.E. (which starred Jack Klugman), and produced educational films. The last years of his life were spent in Rosarita, New Mexico overlooking the beach he surfed as a young man.

In addition to his wife of 52 years, Beryl, Hart is survived by his daughter, Robyn Proiette.
Donations may be made to Rancho Del Nino Nueva Vida, a Rosarito Beach-area orphanage, through Cha Cha's Angels at www.rosaritoangels.org.

Marvel Comics in the 1960s: An Issue by Issue Field Guide to a Pop Culture Phenomenon
By Pierre Comtois
Marvel Comics in the 1960s takes the reader from the legendary company’s first fumbling beginnings as helmed by savvy editor/writer Stan Lee to the full maturity of its wild, colorful, offbeat grandiosity. With the history of Marvel Comics in the 1960’s divided into three distinct phases, the author explains just how Lee, Kirby, Ditko, et al created a line of comic books that, while grounded in the traditional elements of panel to panel storytelling invented early in the twentieth century, broke through the juvenile mind-set of a low brow industry and provided the most vibrantly creative, tumultuous, decade of the twentieth century with a tapestry of full blown pop-culture icons!

Explorer John Kenton returns from a lifetime of wanderings and the wreckage of World War I to discover a mysterious block of Babylonian basalt containing a crystal model of an ancient ship—the Ship of Ishtar!

The sultry magic of the fabled ship draws Kenton into its dreamworld, where a strange crew plucked from the ages sails in a lushly imagined mystical seascape. At the fore of the ship is Sharane, beautiful, proud, luxurious priestess instilled with the power of Ishtar, goddess of Love, Wrath, and Vengeance. On the prow broods inhuman Klaneth, infused with the essence of Negal, god of the Underworld. Kenton finds himself in a cosmic struggle of wills between them sixty centuries in the making! Will he claim Sharane and take command the Ship of Ishtar, or will its mysterious power take command of him?

Science fiction legend Abraham Merrit was a giant of the early 20th century, inspiring the lush language and mystical subjects of authors like H.P. Lovecraft, C.L. Moore, Clark Ashton Smith, and others. In his day he was among the most famous authors in America, with his books selling millions of copies, but today he is mostly forgotten. Age of Aces - Coming in November!
Coming in November From Age of Aces Books, "Satan's Playmates: The Adventures of Molloy and McNamara"

Black Dog Books - Now in production and coming soon!
The Space Annihilator edited by Gene Christie
The Space Annihilator: Early Science Fiction from The Argosy, 1896-1910, collects 16 tales from the first of the many “pulp” magazines that dominated America’s literary landscape in the first half of the twentieth century. Most of the authors are unknown and most of these stories have never been reprinted.

“It’s the force and originality of the ideas that makes these stories important and historic,” comments pulp historian Gene Christie, who edited the collection and contributed an introduction. “More than a hundred years ago, our great-grandparents were actually reading about what we know today as laser beams, the Star Trek ‘transporter,’ cellular telephones and man-made earth satellites.  It’s really hidden history, and these mostly obscure authors deserve to be known and credited for their daring and prophetic concepts.”

One of the highlights of The Space Annihilator is the first published story by Gertrude Barrows, whose later work under the pseudonym Francis Stevens was praised by H.P. Lovecraft, A. Merritt and other masters of fantasy. As “Stevens,” Barrows is credited with originating both the alternate universe story and the “dark fantasy” tale.  Other writers include Frank Lillie Pollock, Bertram Lebhar and Howard R. Garis, who created the “Uncle Wiggley” character that entertained generations of small children.

Doc Con XII - November 14, 2009!
Doc Con XII will be held November 14, 2009 by Rob Smalley in Chandler Arizona. While, Doc Savage and Doc Savage Magazine began in 1933 and turned 75 in 2008, Pat Savage made her debut in Brand of the Werewolf in 1934 and 2009 will mark her 75th anniversary. While the theme may be Doc Savages single-action six-shooter toteing cousins anniversary, the emphasis will be on expanding our Doc Savage knowledge base. In Rob Smalleys own words:

In a way I think we returned to our roots at Doc Con 11 thanks to those that provided us insights into people and history relating to the Doc Savage era and publishing realm. All week I've been saying to myself, "that's what you would do at a Doc Savage Conference". I thought it was great and made this year's Con unique from all others. I would like everyone to consider continuing this theme of learning segments at Doc Con 12.

Gabriel Hunt: HUNT AT WORLD'S END - Arriving in book stores October 27th!
Co-authored by Stoker Award finalist Nicholas Kaufmann, this never-before-published tale takes Gabriel from his home in New York City to the jungles of Borneo, on the trail of a missing graduate student and three legendary gemstones of interest to an ancient Hittite cult.  Despite being ancient, the cult is still very much an active force in the world, as Gabriel discovers en route to an underwater tomb off the coast of Turkey, the belly of a ship sailing the Indian Ocean, and a showdown in the forbidding Kalahari Desert.

If you'd like a taste of of the story, you can find a sample chapter (and the book's smashing cover art, by Glen Orbik) at our Web site: www.HuntForAdventure.com.  And if you'd like to get your hands on a copy of the book, you can either visit your favorite local bookseller next week (forward-thinking booksellers might even have some copies out on their shelves already), or order it online, or call 1-800-481-9191 and get a copy shipped to you by mail.

WORLD'S END will be the last new Hunt yarn to appear this year -- but Gabriel will be back in 2010 with three more adventures, starting with HUNT BEYOND THE FROZEN FIRE in April.  That one's co-authored by Edgar and Anthony Award finalist (and Scribe Award winner) Christa Faust, and it takes Gabriel to the ultimate adventure destination: Antarctica!
You'll be hearing more about that one soon, as well as about Gabriel's ongoing adventures in Hollywood (could we see a Hunt movie some day?).  First things first, though: grab a copy of HUNT AT WORLD'S END, settle down in front of a roaring fire (or at least a warm radiator), and get ready for a pulp adventure that'll...well, hopefully not actually stop your heart, but definitely make your pulse pound.

Hippocampus Press - Coming in 2010!

I AM PROVIDENCE: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF H. P. LOVECRAFT by S. T. Joshi
In 1996, S. T. Joshi's H. P. Lovecraft: A Life was published to universal acclaim. Joyce Carol Oates called it the "definitive" biography, and it won the British Fantasy Award and the Horror Write Sers Association Award. But that 1996 edition was abridged from the manuscript that Joshi wrote in 1993-95; in all, more than 150,000 words were cut for space reasons.

Hippocampus Press is proud to present the complete, uncut edition of Joshi's biography, I AM PROVIDENCE: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF H. P. LOVECRAFT. In addition to restoring every word of Joshi's original manuscript, the entire text has been thoroughly revised and updated in light of the new information on Lovecraft that has emerged since 1996. As such, this book can now truly be said to be the definitive biography of H. P. Lovecraft, written by the world's leading authority on Lovecraft. Readers will find countless details about Lovecraft's life and work not included in the earlier edition, along with important updates on new publications by and about Lovecraft in the last 15 years and on Lovecraft's increasing worldwide reputation. This book constitutes S. T. Joshi's final word on Lovecraft the man, the writer, and the thinker.

I AM PROVIDENCE: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF H. P. LOVECRAFT will be published as a limited edition two-volume hardcover set, with Smythe-sewn signatures and illustrated dust wrappers. All Hippocampus Press limited editions are printed on 60# white offset paper, acid free and elemental chlorine free.

I AM PROVIDENCE: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF H. P. LOVECRAFT is now being made available through this advance subscription. Order now to secure your copy.

Age of Aces - Coming in November!
Coming in November From Age of Aces Books, "Satan's Playmates: The Adventures of Molloy and McNamara"

The Spider VS. The Empire State by Norvell Page
$16.99 trade paperback, 430 pages

THEY SAID IT COULDN'T HAPPEN HERE. THEN THEY SAID ONE MAN COULDN'T STOP IT!

Richard Wentworth spent his vigilante career as The Spider always in the shadows. Now evil acted in broad daylight. The Party of Justice swept into office, rewriting the laws of New York state overnight to benefit their criminal backers and make slaves of its people. This American Reichstag gave itself sweeping powers and raised a private army to exert its malevolent will. How could The Spider hope to stop a criminal conspiracy as big as the state itself? This time The Master of Men would go beyond taking the lives of evildoers... by bringing Hope to the tyrannized citizens of the Empire State!

The "Black Police Trilogy" is author Norvell Page's classic pulp fiction Nazi allegory from 1938. Originally introduced 71 years ago this week in three consecutive months of The Spider Magazine, the novels "The City That Paid To Die", "The Spider at Bay", and "Scourge of the Black Legions" are collected in book form for the first time. This stunning Trade Paperback is designed by the incomparable Chris Kalb, and features an introduction by PEAPS member Tom Krabacher.

All Age of Aces books are $16.99, and are available from

We have just posted three new galleries related to our latest release, "The Spider Vs. The Empire State"!
  • The first gallery is for the pulp covers by John Newton Howitt, which we were not able to reproduce in color in the book.
  • The second shows ALL of the interior illustrations by John Fleming Gould as they originally appeared in the three issues that were collected for the volume.  This means, if you own a copy of Empire State, you can see how each image was filled out to make a complete two-page spread (strictly using Gould art, mind you). This gallery also includes the character portraits from each story which didn’t find a place in the book.
  • The third gallery is actually photographs of the book, both inside and out. We opted to do this because so many people have said that, though the cover is stirring, when they saw the whole book in person they were even more impressed with the design.
So, if you own a copy of Empire State,  enjoy these “dvd extras” — and if you don’t, take a look and maybe you’ll be inspired to pick up a copy!

DC Comics - Doc Savage returns in a new ongoing series!
After the Batman/Doc Savage Special in November, DC will be bringing the characters of The Spirit, Doc Savage, Batman, Black Canary, the Avenger, and more into a noir world called The First Wave.

Brian Azzarello and Rags Morales are the announced team for the limited series. After the mini-series completes, two new ongoings will launch in the world established by these comics: The Spirit and Doc Savage.

Azzarello is creating a new universe for DC Comics that launches November 11 with the Phil Noto-illustrated “Batman/Doc Savage Special,” which introduces readers to a world where Doc Savage is the ultimate specimen of the human race and a new crimefighter dressed as a bat is patrolling the streets of Gotham. The 56-page one-shot leads into a six-issue Prestige format miniseries, coming in 2010, entitled “First Wave” that will be drawn by Rags Morales (“Identity Crisis.”)

Besides Doc Savage and The Batman, other classic heroes inhabiting this world include The Spirit, the Avenger and Rima the Jungle Girl.

Comic Book Resources interviewed Brian Azzarello and has posted an online article that can be read by clicking here.

Del Rey: EL BORAK AND OTHER DESERT ADVENTURES
By Robert E. Howard - Coming in March 2010!
Jay Zetterberg of CPI/Paradox was kind enough to provide the Official Robert E. Howard Forum with a sneak peek at the cover for the upcoming EL BORAK AND OTHER DESERT ADVENTURES volume from Del Rey. The cover is painted by Jim and Ruth Keegan and depicts Howard’s Francis X. Gordon engaged in a dispute with a denizen of the desert wastes.

A MEANS TO FREEDOM: THE LETTERS OF H. P. LOVECRAFT AND ROBERT E. HOWARD
Edited by S. T. Joshi, David E. Schultz & Rusty Burke
Now available: ISBN: 978-0-9814888-0-6: $100.00
2 volume set (individual volumes not sold separately)

Over half the 300 copy print run has now been sold, and virtually all advance orders have been filled. We are aware of the unfortunate circumstances under which Amazon.com cancelled their existing pre-orders for this volume. The situation has been adjusted, but instead of offering it for sale at an impossible discount, they are now listing it at an inflated price. Happily there are still copies available at the actual retail cost. Order from us directly or from our independent bookseller friends to secure your copy today.

H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard are two of the titans of weird fiction of their era. Dominating the pages of Weird Tales in the 1920s and 1930s, they have gained worldwide followings for their compelling writings and also for the very different lives they led. The two writers came in touch in 1930, when Howard wrote to Lovecraft via Weird Tales. A rich and vibrant correspondence immediately ensued. Both writers were fascinated with the past, especially the history of Roman and Celtic Britain, and their letters are full of intriguing discussions of contemporary theories on this subject.

Gradually, a new discussion came to the fore-a complex dispute over the respective virtues of barbarism and civilisation, the frontier and settled life, and the physical and the mental. Lovecraft, a scion of centuries-old New England, and Howard, a product of recently settled Texas, were diametrically opposed on these and other issues, and each writes compellingly of his beliefs, attitudes, and theories. The result is a dramatic debate-livened by wit, learning, and personal revelation-that is as enthralling as the fiction they were writing at the time. All the letters have been exhaustively annotated by the editors.

Weird Words: A Lovecraftian Lexicon, by Dan Clore
Eldritch . . . cacodaemoniacal . . . lucubration . . . Have you ever wondered about the meaning of these and other esoteric words used by Lovecraft and his colleagues? In this Cyclopean dictionary, the product of aeons of erudition and research into the most recondite recesses of literature, Dan Clore not only defines thousands of words found in the work of A. Merritt, H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, and many others in the weird fantasy tradition, but supplies their etymologies and, most impressively, provides parallel usages of the words from centuries of English usage, citing authors ranging from Cotton Mather to Henry Kuttner, from Edmund Spenser to William S. Burroughs, from Edgar Allan Poe to Robert Anton Wilson. This is a volume that scholars of English usage, enthusiasts of fantasy and horror literature, and readers who love the beauty of the English language will find richly rewarding . . . either to read from beginning to end or to dip into as the mood strikes them.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dan Clore is a freelance writer and scholar whose works are well known to fans of H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937), a noted and influential author of weird fiction. Mr. Clore's publishing credits include critical essays in Lovecraft Studies, Studies in Weird Fiction, Necrofile; the Review of Horror Fiction, Weird Times, the anthologies A Century Less a Dream: Selected Criticism of H.P. Lovecraft, The Freedom of Fantastic Things: Selected Criticism on Clark Ashton Smith, and Supernatural Fiction of the World: an Encyclopedia. His fiction has appeared in publications such as The Urbanite, Deathrealm, Terminal Fright, Epitaph, Black October Magazine, Cthulhu Sex, Lore, and several others.  His work is anthologized in The Last Continent: New Tales of Zothique and in Eldritch Horrors: Dark Tales.  His collected works appeared as The Unspeakable and Others in 2001.  A new, expanded edition, illustrated by Allen Koszowski, is scheduled for 2009.

Age of Aces - Coming in November!
Coming in November From Age of Aces Books, "Satan's Playmates: The Adventures of Molloy and McNamara"

Age of Aces - Coming soon!
Coming in October From Age of Aces Books, "Satan's Playmates: The Adventures of Molloy and McNamara"

Check out our Web site at http://www.ageofaces.net

New this week:

“Guile of the Griffon” by Arch Whitehouse from the November 1935 FLYING ACES featuring "The Griffon".
Join Kerry Keen and Barney O’Dare as “The Griffon” returns with another exciting adventure.
Down through the ebony night dived a strange, black amphibian. Glistening in the reflected light of the great Montauk beam, it glided to the water and taxied to a ramp where two men stood in the shadows. And from the cockpit of that eerie craft crawled a hideously deformed creature—a man whose very existence was a cruel mockery of the grave. “I built—” he croaked, leering at the taller man, “not one plane, but two. The other,” he continued in a queer cackle, “went to a man whom you, Keen, will kill—though as yet you’ve never even heard of him . . . .”

Hard Case Crime - Coming in October and beyond!
October 2009
HONEY IN HIS MOUTH by Lester Dent, Cover art by Ron Lesser - First publication ever!
If you were small-time grifter Walter Harsh, recovering in a hospital with a broken arm, you’d listen to a proposition that could net you a cool $50,000 for impersonating the South American strongman you resemble. You’d pay attention when the dictator’s sultry mistress started putting the moves on you. And in the dead of night, when no one was watching, you might just hatch a plot to get it all for yourself: the money, the girl, and the stash of stolen loot she’s conspiring to spirit out of the country...

November 2009
QUARRY IN THE MIDDLE by Max Allan Collins, Cover art by Ron Lesser
The enigmatic hitman Quarry—star of seven celebrated novels and an award-winning feature film ("The Last Lullaby")—is back in this violent, steamy tale of warring crime families. When two Godfathers set out to bump each other off, guess who winds up with both contracts...

December 2009
THE CORPSE WORE PASTIES by Jonny Porkpie, Cover art by Ricky Mujica
Usually, when you call a burlesque act a "show stopper," you don’t mean it quite so literally. But this time, that’s just what happened: The show stopped dead, and so did the girl. And as I looked at her nearly naked and completely lifeless body and the bottle of poison in her hand with my fingerprints all over it, I thought to myself: Porkpie, you’re in for it this time...

THE VALLEY OF FEAR by A. C. Doyle, Cover art by Glen Orbik

A sawed-off shotgun blast to the face leaves one man dead—and reveals a secret that has pursued another across an ocean and set the world’s most ruthless criminal on his trail. The man needs the help of a great detective...but could even Sherlock Holmes save him now?

THE GOLDEN ANACONDA: And Other Strange Tales of Adventure
By Elmer Brown Mason
Introduction by John Locke

"The name of Elmer Brown Mason is a talisman that never fails to open the door to weird adventures in weird places with weird animals and men." -- All-Story Weekly

Officially, Elmer Brown Mason was an entomologist for the United States Government, his beat, the swampy backwaters of the South. Privately, he journeyed to the dangerous corners of the world in search of adventure. For a brief but intense period, his experiences inspired thrilling stories of exploration and wonder.

The ten fascinating--and fantastic--stories collected here are set in the Everglades, the Louisiana bayous, the Amazon jungle, Borneo, and other dangerous places known to few people of his era. Included are the five Wandering Smith stories from The Popular Magazine, featuring the South American epic, "The Golden Anaconda." Also included are five tales from All-Story Weekly, topped by the horror-laden two-part saga, "Black Butterflies" and "Red Tree-Frogs." All ten stories were published from 1915 to '16, when the world was much younger than today.

6x9-inch perfect bound; 260 pages, $20.00 postpaid
