Age of Aces - Coming soon!
Coming in October From Age of Aces Books, "Satan's Playmates: The Adventures of Molloy and McNamara"
Mike Molloy and Tommy McNamara were the "Twin Terrors of the Western Front".
They flew as if they had been born in Spads, they drank like thirsty whales, and they'd fought by each other's side through every mile of air along the lines and in every bar from the Front to Paris. If there were no more pressing targets, they pounded each other to a pulp, for any reason at all, and were strangely happy.

Leading the 24th Pursuit Squadron across WWI Europe's blood red skies, Molloy and McNamara were the bane of the German Air Force. Their names and reputations were known wherever fighting men met with blazing guns or flying fists.
Written by William Hartley, the twenty tales of Molloy and McNamara appeared in Dare-Devil Aces between 1936 and 1942. Age of Aces has collected the first eleven of them for this volume.

The Spider VS. The Empire State by Norvell Page
$16.99 trade paperback, 430 pages

THEY SAID IT COULDN'T HAPPEN HERE. THEN THEY SAID ONE MAN COULDN'T STOP IT!

Richard Wentworth spent his vigilante career as The Spider always in the shadows. Now evil acted in broad daylight. The Party of Justice swept into office, rewriting the laws of New York state overnight to benefit their criminal backers and make slaves of its people. This American Reichstag gave itself sweeping powers and raised a private army to exert its malevolent will. How could The Spider hope to stop a criminal conspiracy as big as the state itself? This time The Master of Men would go beyond taking the lives of evildoers... by bringing Hope to the tyrannized citizens of the Empire State!

The "Black Police Trilogy" is author Norvell Page's classic pulp fiction Nazi allegory from 1938. Originally introduced 71 years ago this week in three consecutive months of The Spider Magazine, the novels "The City That Paid To Die", "The Spider at Bay", and "Scourge of the Black Legions" are collected in book form for the first time. This stunning Trade Paperback is designed by the incomparable Chris Kalb, and features an introduction by PEAPS member Tom Krabacher.

All Age of Aces books are $16.99, and are available from

We have just posted three new galleries related to our latest release, "The Spider Vs. The Empire State"!
  • The first gallery is for the pulp covers by John Newton Howitt, which we were not able to reproduce in color in the book.
  • The second shows ALL of the interior illustrations by John Fleming Gould as they originally appeared in the three issues that were collected for the volume.  This means, if you own a copy of Empire State, you can see how each image was filled out to make a complete two-page spread (strictly using Gould art, mind you). This gallery also includes the character portraits from each story which didn’t find a place in the book.
  • The third gallery is actually photographs of the book, both inside and out. We opted to do this because so many people have said that, though the cover is stirring, when they saw the whole book in person they were even more impressed with the design.
So, if you own a copy of Empire State,  enjoy these “dvd extras” — and if you don’t, take a look and maybe you’ll be inspired to pick up a copy!

New this week:

“Death From Nowhere” by William E. Barrett from the September 1934 SKY BIRDS featuring "The Iron Ace".
Hugh “Iron Ace” McQuillen had written the name of the Assassin with blood-red tracer in the skies of France, and he had made it count. In the danger-filled clouds over the Front he had faced the best that Germany had to offer—and he had always won. But now behind his own lines, on his own drome, he faced a new kind of death—and for it he had no answer.

Doc Con XII - November 14, 2009!
Doc Con XII will be held November 14, 2009 by Rob Smalley in Chandler Arizona. While, Doc Savage and Doc Savage Magazine began in 1933 and turned 75 in 2008, Pat Savage made her debut in Brand of the Werewolf in 1934 and 2009 will mark her 75th anniversary. While the theme may be Doc Savages single-action six-shooter toteing cousins anniversary, the emphasis will be on expanding our Doc Savage knowledge base. In Rob Smalleys own words:

In a way I think we returned to our roots at Doc Con 11 thanks to those that provided us insights into people and history relating to the Doc Savage era and publishing realm. All week I've been saying to myself, "that's what you would do at a Doc Savage Conference". I thought it was great and made this year's Con unique from all others. I would like everyone to consider continuing this theme of learning segments at Doc Con 12.

In Lovecraft Unbound, more than 20 of today's most prominent writers of literature and dark fantasy tell stories set in or inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft.

Chronicling the period between 1925 and 1990, prior to the rise of the Internet age, the book reveals how thousands of these specialized magazines were produced, gratifying the secret life of every fad, taste, obsession, and hush-hush desire. Nothing was beyond the scope of the imaginative publishers and eccentric editors, the guide shows, as it goes behind the scenes of titles such as Amazing Stories, Doctor Death, Gee-Whiz, Jaybird, Phantom Detective, and True Thrills. Featuring full-color reproductions of hundreds of distinctive cult cover images, this reference's backgrounds, histories, and essays offer a complete picture of a bygone era.

The Pulp Rack - New addition!
There are two new posts that continue our Swashbuckling theme:

"The D'Artagnan Romances: Twenty Years After by Dumas"
Two posts ago I described Dumas' The Three Musketeers as a romp. The sequel, which began its serialized appearance in 1845 -- the year following its precursor's publication -- starts out much more somberly. Taking up, as its title suggests, two decades after the first volume, this tale opens with our heroes having gone their separate ways. D'Artagnan, the witty, apparently irrepressible youthful leader of the earlier band, has turned bitter, his witticisms now cynical asides. At the end of The Three Musketeers, Cardinal Richelieu had appointed D'Artagnan a lieutenant of the Musketeers. Twenty years later, the once-merry Gascon is still a lieutenant, his accomplishments for the crown forgotten, his dreams for advancement turned to dirt.

"'The Fist and the Sword,' by Fulton Grant, Blue Book August 1936"
For some reason I've had stuck in my head for years that Fulton T. Grant was one of H. Bedford-Jones' many pseudonyms. Thanks to anthologist and bibliographer Mike Ashley, University of Minnesota librarian Denny Lien, and other members of FictionMags, my notions got straightened out. Some odds and ends those fine gentlemen shared with me about Grant:

• Obituary for Fulton Thatcher Grant, New York Times Jan 16, 1949, p. 69.

Bennington, Vt., Jan. 15 -- Fulton T. Grant of North Bennington, son of Lewis F. Grant, New York artist, died last Thursday, at the Veterans Hospital in White River Junction. His age was 50.

Mr. Grant, an alumnus of Hamilton College, served as a private in the first World War. He was recalled into service in the second conflict with the rank of captain and was wounded in Italy. He had served as advertising manager of the old New York Herald in Paris.

Now that I've caught up on my posts, you can catch up on your patronage to The Pulp Rack.

As always, thanks for your patronage.

Subterranean Press: THE EVIL IN PEMBERLEY HOUSE
By Philip Jose Farmer and Win Scott Eckert
Now available!
For over thirty years, readers have marveled at Philip José Farmer’s inventive integration of popular fiction and literature’s most beloved characters, in a mythical web known as the Wold Newton Family. First described in the fictional biographies Tarzan Alive: The Definitive Biography of Lord Greystoke and Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life, Farmer expanded his Wold Newton mythos in novels such as The Other Log of Phileas Fogg, The Adventure of the Peerless Peer, Time’s Last Gift, Hadon of Ancient Opar, Flight to Opar, The Dark Heart of Time: A Tarzan Novel, and Escape from Loki: Doc Savage’s First Adventure.

The Evil in Pemberley House
, an addition to the Wold Newton cycle, plays with the Gothic horror tradition. Patricia Wildman, the daughter of the world-renowned adventurer and crimefighter of the 1930s and ’40s, Dr. James Clarke “Doc” Wildman, is all alone in the world when she inherits the family estate in Derbyshire, England—old, dark, and supposedly haunted.

But Farmer, characteristically, turns convention on its ear. Is the ghost real, or a clever sham? In Patricia Wildman, Farmer creates an introspective character who struggles to reconcile the supernatural with her rational scientific upbringing, while also attempting to work through unresolved feelings about her late parents. He sets the action at Pemberley from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and ingrains the various mysteries in the Canon of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

The Evil in Pemberley House
is a darkly erotic novel with broad appeal to readers of pulp and popular literature, particularly followers of Doc Savage, Sherlockians, and fans of Farmer’s own celebrated Wold Newton Family.

The Limited Edition of
The Evil in Pemberley House will come with an exclusive chapbook of bonus materials that includes Philip Jose Farmer’s original outline for the novel, as well as an extensive family tree for the Wold Newton Universe.

In Chronicles of Conan: Isle of the Dead and Other Stories, these two comic-book titans lead Conan on a thrilling tour of Hyboria - from the monster-infested Bossonian Marshes to the hideous slave markets of Belthem - as Conan encounters strange, supernatural foes, beguiling women, and overconfident rulers.

THE GOLDEN ANACONDA: And Other Strange Tales of Adventure
By Elmer Brown Mason
Introduction by John Locke

"The name of Elmer Brown Mason is a talisman that never fails to open the door to weird adventures in weird places with weird animals and men." -- All-Story Weekly

Officially, Elmer Brown Mason was an entomologist for the United States Government, his beat, the swampy backwaters of the South. Privately, he journeyed to the dangerous corners of the world in search of adventure. For a brief but intense period, his experiences inspired thrilling stories of exploration and wonder.

The ten fascinating--and fantastic--stories collected here are set in the Everglades, the Louisiana bayous, the Amazon jungle, Borneo, and other dangerous places known to few people of his era. Included are the five Wandering Smith stories from The Popular Magazine, featuring the South American epic, "The Golden Anaconda." Also included are five tales from All-Story Weekly, topped by the horror-laden two-part saga, "Black Butterflies" and "Red Tree-Frogs." All ten stories were published from 1915 to '16, when the world was much younger than today.

THEY SAID IT COULDN'T HAPPEN HERE. THEN THEY SAID ONE MAN COULDN'T STOP IT!

AIRSHIP 27: THE GREEN LAMA - Now available!
Airship 27 Productions and Cornerstone Book Publishers are thrilled to launch their latest pulp anthology; The Green Lama, Master of the Mystics Arts.

Created by Kendal Foster Crossen back in 1940 for DOUBLE DETECTIVE MAGAZINE, the
character was intended to be competition for Street & Smith’s Shadow title. When wealthy young socialite, Jethro Dumont traveled to Tibet, it was in search of enlightenment and purpose for his life.  These he found plus a very rare and unique talent for the mystic arts.  Empowered by powerful, arcane abilities, he has set forth on a new and bolder path, one of truth and justice.  With his Buddhist sensibilities, Jethro Dumont became the most unique and memorable pulp hero of them all, The Green Lama.

In order to protect his identity, Dumont created a second false persona, that of Buddhist Dr. Pali.  Aided by young starlet Jean Farrell and Detective Caraway, the The Green Lama thrilled readers young and old in both his pulp and comic book adventures.

Now he returns in three all new adventures written by today’s action-adventure scribes,
Kevin Noel Olson, Adam Garcia and Peter Miller. From the mountain tops of hidden Tibet to the streets of New York and the glitter of Hollywood, journey with this classic pulp icon as he once more battles the wicked in defense of the weak and innocent.

Features twelve new black and white illustrations by Jay Piscopo with a cover by Mike Fyles.
Edited by Ron Fortier with designs by Rob Davis. “Om Mani Padme Hum.”

HAFFNER PRESS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE . . .
THE COLLECTED EDMOND HAMILTON  - AUTHORIZED EDITION

Edmond Moore Hamilton (1904-1977) was one of the early pioneers of American science fiction. For fifty years his stories established and popularized many of the tropes in modern science fiction. Later this year, Haffner Press will launch the first salvo in a program authorized by the Estate of Edmond Hamilton to collect all the prose work of this neglected master. All of his science fiction, all the fantasy, all the mysteries--all the stories and novels (including the entire run of the "Captain Future" adventures) will be assembled in this multi-volume set.

• The Metal Giants and Others: The Collected Edmond Hamilton, Volume One
• The Star Stealers: The Complete Tales of the Interstellar Patrol, The Collected Edmond Hamilton, Volume Two
• The Collected Captain Future, Volume One: Captain Future and the Space Emperor

As with all Haffner Press titles, quality is of prime importance.  Each volume of THE COLLECTED EDMOND HAMILTON will be printed on acid-free archival-quality paper with smythe-sewn hardcover bindings using full-cloth covered boards. Full-color dust jackets will reproduce digitally restored covers from the original pulp magazines.

We are currently lining up a stellar group of writers, editors, historians, and friends of Hamilton to provide insightful introductions for each volume.
Keep Watching the Skies and check the Haffner Press website frequently for updates on this project. We have a lot of neat tie-ins to this particular program, and you won't want to miss at thing.

Hard Case Crime - Coming in September and beyond!
September 2009
LOSERS LIVE LONGER by Russell Atwood, Cover art by Robert McGinnis
The death of legendary private eye George Rowell looked like an accident—but searching for the truth behind it will put down-and-out East Village detective Payton Sherwood on the corpse-littered trail of a runaway investment scam artist, a drug-addicted reality TV star—and the bewitching beauty whose appearance set it all in motion...

October 2009
HONEY IN HIS MOUTH by Lester Dent, Cover art by Ron Lesser - First publication ever!
If you were small-time grifter Walter Harsh, recovering in a hospital with a broken arm, you’d listen to a proposition that could net you a cool $50,000 for impersonating the South American strongman you resemble. You’d pay attention when the dictator’s sultry mistress started putting the moves on you. And in the dead of night, when no one was watching, you might just hatch a plot to get it all for yourself: the money, the girl, and the stash of stolen loot she’s conspiring to spirit out of the country...

November 2009
QUARRY IN THE MIDDLE by Max Allan Collins, Cover art by Ron Lesser
The enigmatic hitman Quarry—star of seven celebrated novels and an award-winning feature film ("The Last Lullaby")—is back in this violent, steamy tale of warring crime families. When two Godfathers set out to bump each other off, guess who winds up with both contracts...

NEW RELEASES
BLOOD WILL HAVE ITS SEASON by Joseph S. Pulver, Sr. is already garnering rave reviews throughout the horror community. In the words of Wilum Pugmire, "Joe Pulver is a dark star in the merciless cosmos of weird fiction.  His work is as brutal as it is beautiful." Travel from the dark, forbidding alleys of our ruined cityscapes and into the unearthly by the effortless stroke of a dazzling metaphor! With a broad scope ranging from traditional horror through splatterpunk into innovative riffs on The King in Yellow, enthusiasts of the macabre will find much to enjoy in Pulver's demonic witchery.  NOW AVAILABLE from Hippocampus Press!

THE WAR OF THE WHISPERERS by Adam Niswander, A Novel in The Shaman Cycle.
Native Americans are turning up dead with alarming frequency in the area around Casa Grande, Arizona. Who could be responsible? Suspicion immediately falls on the Army of the Dream, a compound run by Jason Trahearne. Is Trahearne merely devoted to re-creating World War II battles, or is he a dangerous neo-Nazi? Worse, can he be under the influence of a shadowy but immensely powerful group of supernatural entities who control their human servants by whispers? Adam Niswander's latest exciting novel is NOW AVAILABLE from Hippocampus Press!

Released to coincide with Mencken Day 2009 is COLLECTED POEMS of H. L. Mencken, edited by S. T. Joshi. Fans of Joshi who know him for his Lovecraft scholarship may not be aware that he is also a leading Mencken scholar. Joshi has now, for the first time, collected the entirety of Mencken's verse, ranging from patriotic poems in the manner of Kipling, to satirical poems poking fun at politicians, actresses, and the institution of marriage, to surprisingly touching poems on romance, the seasons, and other subjects. A full appendix of editorial content explicates obscure topical and biographical references, in the entertaining and knowledgeable style for which Joshi is justly famous. NOW AVAILABLE from Hippocampus Press!

COMING SOON
The latest installment of THE LOVECRAFT ANNUAL will be available soon, featuring new research by T. R. Livesey, James Goho, Massimo Berruti, Will Murray and others. As always, the journal is edited by S. T. Joshi. All previous issues remain in print and are available at our website.

SEVEN DEADLY PLEASURES by Michael Aronovitz.
Each of the seven tales that Michael Aronovitz brings together in his first collection of stories is a powerful, hard-hitting specimen of contemporary weird fiction. Order now and be among the first to read this outstanding collection from a rising star of horror. In the words of William Lashner, author of Blood and Bone, "Seven Deadly Pleasures is a startlingly good collection. With the assuredness of a born storyteller, Aronovitz rips the bland surface off the everyday to reveal the rolling horrors that lie beneath. These stories are raw with emotion, and the true terror of life, but be careful as they drag you down into the darkness, because you won't return the same."

Donald Sidney-Fryer's omnibus THE ATLANTIS FRAGMENTS is coming in paperback, in time for World Fantasy Convention where Sidney-Fryer himself perform dramatic readings of selections from ATLANTIS, plus works of George Sterling, Nora May French and Clark Ashton Smith. Some copies still remain of the ATLANTIS limited edition hardcover, but they're going fast. Treat yourself to the poetry and prose collection which garnered a favorable mention by Michael Dirda in the Washington Post.

Also coming in time for World Fantasy is THE OUTER GATE: The Collected Poems of Nora May French, edited by Donald Sidney-Fryer and Alan Gullette. The poetry of Nora May French possesses its own kind of cosmic consciousness, aligning it well enough with the work of Clark Ashton Smith and her friend George Sterling, without making it the same thing. Almost one hundred years have now passed since her death at twenty-six, and not quite one hundred years have gone by since a group of close and influential friends published her one and only collection. Clearly she deserves an ampler legacy, and perhaps this republication of her distinctive and individual poetry will help to achieve that consummation.

WEIRD WORDS: A LOVECRAFTIAN LEXICON by Dan Clore will be released in time for the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival. Order now to secure your copy of the reference book which is as entertaining as it is informative. Featuring stunning cover art by Howard Wandrei.

NEW AND IMPROVED LOVECRAFT BIOGRAPHY.
Yes, S. T. Joshi's revised and expanded HPL biography, I AM PROVIDENCE: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF H. P. LOVECRAFT is coming from Hippocampus, and we will initially make it available through an advance subscription. We envision this two volume set appearing in a limited hardcover edition of 1000 copies per volume. If any copies remain after the subscription period ends, they will be sold to the general public. Some sets will also be made available to our independent bookseller friends. We're not quite ready to start taking advance subscription orders, so please be patient.

THOMAS LIGOTTI.
The latest work from Thomas Ligotti is called THE CONSPIRACY AGAINST THE HUMAN RACE. Ligotti's legions of devotees will recall an early draft of this grim but spirited treatise was given a limited release on the internet some years ago. The final version has now been codified and will see a release in hardcover next year from Hippocampus. More details to follow, soon.

Thank you for your interest in Hippocampus Press!

CULT OF THE CORPSES by Maxwell Hawkins

Introduction by John Locke

Two weird detective novelettes from Detective-Dragnet Magazine. "Cult of the Corpses" (January 1931) puts a detective on the trail of a murderous voodoo cult operating out of a Manhattan nightclub. "Dealers in Death" (July 1931) pits a detective against the machinations of the insidious Mr. Letherius, a contract killer who specializes in bizarre and undetectable forms of murder.

These are early (and entertaining) examples of the early '30s trend toward weird detective stories. Included is a detailed discussion of the trend; and a profile of author Maxwell Hawkins.

Stories complete with original illustrations.

From 1932-33, Thrilling Detective featured him in a series of novelettes by Perley Poore Sheehan, veteran fictioneer and Hollywood screenwriter. Subterranean Press: Artists Inspired by H. P. Lovecraft - On sale for over 50% off!
This 400-page art book features loads of color and black & white artwork that has directly or indirectly illustrated the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. The work has been culled from the last eighty years, including works from the pulps such as Weird Tales, paperback covers from the 1960s and 1970s, fanzines, movies, sculptures, private commissions, etc.

For most of the art, we have worked from either originals or first-generation transparencies, so most of the work is displayed with a brilliance that has never been seen. Plus, there are several pages of fold-out views, including Michael Whelan's "Lovecraft Diptych," which is shown in the book nearly four feet wide.

Artists include H.R. Giger, Michael Whelan, Lee Brown Coye, Virgil Finlay, Gahan Wilson, J.K. Potter, John Coulthart, Ian Miller, Gahan Wilson, and dozens of others in a massive, oversized 12 x 15.5 inch book. Also included are many previously unpublished works, & several major essays. Foreword by famed Lovecraft director Stuart Gordon; introduction by Harlan Ellison, afterword by Thomas Ligotti.

This oversize book normally retails for $395 per copy, but we're able to offer it to our mailing list for only $195 per copy, with U.S. shipping being free. International shipping will be $40, I'm afraid, and can't be lowered because of the book's size.
