An open letter to the pulp community. For
those taking advantage of the discounted SHADOW and DOC SAVAGE volumes at Half-Price
Books, please be aware that Nostalgia Ventures began remaindering these books
last summer in direct violation of its sub-contract with me. Also, as of today
(July 22, 2009), Nostalgia Ventures has still not paid royalties to either Condé
Nast or me for any books it has sold since July 1st, 2008. (A semi-annual royalty
payment was due back in February, and another six months of royalties are coming
due in August.) There is a very good reason why Nostalgia Ventures/Nostalgiatown
is no longer co-publishing these books, and it involves a continuing series of
contract violations. And for anyone who may not be sympathetic because Condé Nast is a huge corporation, please be aware that Condé Nast has chosen to continue the oral agreement it had for decades with Walter Gibson, and is splitting its royalties for the SHADOW reprints with Walter's family. This is an extremely rare and decent act that is quite unusual in the publishing world. I think my SHADOW and DOC SAVAGE double-novel trade paperbacks are a great value at the $12.95 cover price. Obviously, the books are an even better value at discounted prices. However, please be aware that purchasing these books from either Half-Price Books or Nostalgiatown does nothing to encourage the continuation of these series. And since Nostalgia Ventures still hasn't paid its contract-required royalties for any of the books it has sold during the past 12 1/2 months, the money from Nostalgiatown's and Half-Price Books' sales also hasn't been continuing on to Walter Gibson's family. It's not necessary to purchase THE SHADOW and DOC SAVAGE directly from Sanctum Books to support the ongoing publishing operation and encourage the continuation of these reprints. Joyce R.I.P. Brenda Joyce, a movie actress who played Jane in five "Tarzan" films, has died. She was 92. A family friend, David Ragan, says she suffered from dementia for a decade and died July 4 of pneumonia at a nursing home in Santa Monica. Joyce, whose real name was Betty Leabo, appeared in some two dozen movies but she is best known for succeeding Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane in the "Tarzan" pictures. She appeared in the "Tarzan" movies in the 1940s, opposite Johnny Weissmuller and later Lex Barker. Joyce made her last movie in 1949. Ragan says she worked for the immigration department for a decade, helping new immigrants find housing and work. She is survived by a son, two daughters and three grandchildren. | Ellie Frazetta - R.I.P. Eleanor 'Ellie' Frazetta, the wife of celebrated artist Frank Frazetta, passed away today to be with the Lord after a courageous one-year battle with cancer. Eleanor Kelly was born in Massachusetts and moved to New York where she married Frank in November, 1956. She acted as his business partner as well as his lifelong companion. Known for her feisty personality as well as her intuitive business acumen, she was instrumental in successfully establishing record prices for Frank's work throughout her life. She is survived by her husband Frank, her four children, Frank Jr., Billy, Holly and Heidi, numerous grandchildren, and many friends. A public memorial is planned and details will be announced shortly. In the meantime, the family requests privacy. | |||||

Comics upcoming Doc Savage/Avenger project In May, DC announced that Brian Azzarello was working on a new project (First Wave) for DC that includes Doc Savage, The Spirit, and other characters in a pulp-inspired world of non-powered heroes. The artist who will bring these heroes and their world to life will be Rags Morales. Morales is now sketching out the many characters who will be involved in First Wave, which is slated to begin later this year. Longtime SHADOW radio announcer Ken Roberts' career is highlighted in a NEW YORK TIMES obituary: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/05/nyregion/05roberts.html?_r=1 With the exception of the 1932-33 NBC season, the 1935 15-minute serial and the first ten WOR/Mutual broadcasts, Ken announced THE SHADOW from 1931 through 1944, introducing all the major radio Shadows: Frank Readick, James La Curto, Orson Welles, Bill Johnstone, Bret Morrison and John Archer (the latter on Ken's QUICK AS A FLASH quiz show). Anthony Tollin reports that he had the great pleasure to direct Ken in a number of SHADOW cast reunions, and also worked with him in recreations of QUICK AS A FLASH, MARCH OF TIME, GRAND CENTRAL STATION and a performance of "The Plot to Overthrow Christmas" directed by the legendary Norman Corwin. Lone Justice: Crash! is the second time Wheatley and Tinnell have teamed up for a ComicMix serialization. Their first effort, EZ Street, the tale of two creative brothers, was nominated for a Harvey Award. It also contained a comic-within-a-comic aspect, as it featured Lone Justice as one creation of its central characters. Despite the obvious connection between the tales, however, both graphic novels can be enjoyed entirely independently from the other. “Given our title, Lone Justice: Crash!, it was difficult to resist calling this the Lone Justice: Crashcan, but life is confusing enough as it is,” Wheatley laughed. “So, c’mon by the booth at Comic-Con and pick up of the Lone Justice: Crash! Submissions The idea behind Pulp Spirit is that of
the now-vanished general adventure pulp magazines such as Argosy, Blue Book or
Adventure; or even more specialized pulps like Jungle, Magic Carpet, North-West
Stories or Far East. With just a smattering of the hero pulps such as Doc Savage,
The Shadow or The Spider. We carry a broad range of fiction, all of it pulp inspired;
and we're looking for backgrounds and genres writers don't often have the opportunity
to work with nowadays.With issue 6 having just gone on line (go to www.planetarystories.com and look for the link to Pulp Spirit 6), we're starting to think about issue 7, and I assure you it's going to be a very good one. Mostly we've published crime and western stories, and I'm pleased to say that there are several good writers in those fields submitting fine stories to us now. I'm confident we'll continue to publish the best western and crime fiction stories online for many issues to come. I know I'll continue to look for them and to encourage the writers who do them best. But I'd like to see some other types of stories now, to run in addition to the regular crime stories and westerns. I'd particularly like to see adventure stories set in exotic locales. For example, stories set in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East; the jungles of Africa, India or Malaysia. Cities like Shanghai, Marseille or Cape Town. The time period you choose to write about is no problem, either. We just want a good story with good characters and a believeable setting. I'd like to run more stories set in the Canadian Northwest, especially during the goldrush. We also want historical fiction. This is a very important category to me and I'm eager to see a lot more fiction of this sort. We also need illustrators. Pulpfest 2009, a new and
improved version of the venerable convention catering to fans and collectors of
vintage popular fiction, will be held from Friday, July 31st, through Sunday,
August 2nd, at the Ramada Plaza Hotel
and Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Sellers of pulp magazines, all-fiction digests, dime novels, and other collectible books and periodicals are already lining up for exhibit space, and the convention will be advertised and promoted extensively to capture the attention of new hobbyists as well as veteran attendees. Preliminary flyers carrying basic information are being distributed at various collectibles shows this fall, beginning with Bouchercon, the annual gathering for collectors of mystery fiction. The Pulpfest 2009 committee has already contacted several publications to inquire about advertising the convention, and additional flyers will be designed and distributed throughout the year. Additionally, the Pulpfest 2009 website is now operational and can be found at www.pulpfest.com. In the weeks and months to come, it will be updated regularly to provide new information on guests and programming as soon as it becomes available. Dealers interested in helping promote Pulpfest 2009 can download and print out either of two flyers already available on the website in PDF form. These can be distributed at collectibles shows and sent with mail-order shipments. Following an extensive search for the best available venue, the Pulpfest 2009 committee chose the Ramada Plaza for its spacious accommodations, numerous amenities, ease of access, and competitive pricing. The committee has negotiated a guest-room rate of $84 plus tax per night, significantly less than that offered by other pulp conventions. The Convention Center’s main room boasts more than 10,000 square feet of space and will accommodate up to 80 eight-foot tables. A separate room on the same floor will be set up theater-style for our evening programming. A con suite will be open for after-hours conversation and conviviality. Located just off Exit 116 of Interstate 71, the Ramada Plaza is just 20 minutes from Columbus International Airport and 10 minutes from downtown Columbus, making our convention site easily accessible to attendees whether they’re driving or flying. The Ramada offers complementary transportation via shuttle to and from the airport, downtown Columbus, and various other locations (including restaurants) within a five-mile radius of the hotel. The newly renovated hotel additionally offers all the usual amenities. High-speed wireless Internet access is now available in the main lobby, convention center, and guest rooms. Guests can avail themselves of a whirlpool, an exercise room, and both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a full-service business center. Parking is free for hotel guests and single-day convention attendees. The Ramada’s spacious restaurant, Justin’s Place, serves traditional American cuisine and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. The hotel’s cozy lounge, Bowties, is open until two a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The Ramada Plaza is an extremely popular venue for conventions of our type and size. For 15 years now it has hosted Cinevent, an annual confab of vintage-film fans and collectors of movie memorabilia. Hotel management is both committed to and experienced in providing the courteous, comprehensive service that produces satisfied conventioneers. THE SCIENTISTS REVOLT by Edgar Rice Burroughs Written under the pen-name of John Tyler McCulloch in 1922, "Beware!" was shopped around to see if a Burroughs' story would sell without his name attached to it. The story failed to sell. When Ray Palmer, editor of Amazing Stories, contacted Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. to see if they had any stories available for sale, "Beware!" was one of the stories sold to Palmer. With the permission of ERB Inc. and ERB, the story was rewritten by Palmer and was published in Fantastic Adventures pulp magazine. The original story was not published until 1974. Robert E. Howard Foundation: Sentiment: An Olio of Rarer Works - Next REH title! As announced at Howard Days this year, our next book is entitled Sentiment: An Olio of Rarer Works. This is a collection of Howard’s humor and contemporary fiction, some non-fiction pieces, and a few other items of miscellanea. The gem of the collection is “Wild Water” which, after a conversation with Foundation members, will also appear in a future Western volume (it’s a tough story to place). Many of the other pieces are short, unfinished, and/or unpolished. Because of this, we’ll be printing a small run and would like to know just how many customers are interested in the first printing so we’ll know about how many to produce. The price will probably be the same as our other large volumes ($53 for members and $59 for non-members). The book should go to the printer soon, with delivery sometime in August or September (our printer shuts down for two weeks in the summer). Please email your interest to info@rehfoundation.org.
