THE 2009 WINDY CITY PULP & PAPER CONVENTION (#9)
MAY 1 (Friday) through MAY 3 (Sunday), 2009

The first pulp convention of the year, the Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention, is now only 3 months away! To be held on May 1 - May 3, 2009, we're returning to last year's hotel, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center (in the suburbs of Chicago). Windy City has been the largest pulp convention in the country the past few years, with over 125 dealer tables and over 400 attendees last year. To date we've sold around 100 tables, and if our pattern of the last few years holds, we anticipate selling out of tables in late February.

As always, you can check the con's website, www.windycitypulpandpaper.com, for updates and registration information and forms. We hope to see you in Chicago in May at pulp fandom's largest party!

For our ninth show, we’re returning to last year’s hotel, the Westin Lombard, in the West suburbs of Chicago.  The Westin is a new hotel, located about 20 minutes SW of O’Hare Airport and about a half hour West of Midway Airport.  Room rates are $104/night (to get the con rate, you must book by 5:00 p.m. on April 9, 2009!).  Parking is free.  The hotel is in the midst of a shopping and restaurant corridor – it’s adjacent (within walking distance) to Yorktown Mall and about a mile from Oak Brook Shopping Center.  For those with families, it’s also only 7 miles from the Brookfield Zoo, one of the nation’s top zoos.  Movie theaters are also a short walk away.  And if you like to gamble, the Aurora River Boat is about 10 miles away.  If you are flying in and not renting a car, please check the website for details on various cab companies and shuttle services that offer fixed price transportation to and from the hotel.  Please mention the con when booking rooms.

SPECIAL EVENTS!!
CELEBRATING THE ART OF HUBERT ROGERS!  For this year's con, we're pleased to announce that the family of pulp artist Hubert Rogers will be attending, bringing an incredible amount of art for display in our art show. Between works that his family is bringing and other pieces from private collections, we should have around 2 dozen paintings by Rogers and several dozen black and white interiors on display, in what promises to be an amazing art room! Rogers was a top pulp artist for decades, and while most may remember him for his covers for Astounding, he was prolific in many pulp genres. We'll be scheduling some talks about the artist, and tours of the art, with his family.

CELEBRATING THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SPICY PULPS!  In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the spicy pulps, we will also have several spicy pulp paintings -- including some by H.J. Ward -- on display, and we plan a number of other special exhibits around the spicies.

FRANK HAMILTON ESTATE FRIDAY NIGHT AUCTION!  In addition to our regular Saturday night auction (at which we anticipate the return of more rare materials from the Munsey pulparchives), we will also be holding a special estate auction on Friday night, with loads of material from the estate of Frank Hamilton. Frank was one of the giants in the pulp fan community, winning one of the first Lamont awards for the terrific art he regularly contributed to pulp fandom, and a longtime collector, especially of hero and Burroughs pulps. We'll be cataloging the material from his estate in advance of the convention, and posting lists and photos on the website as they're prepared, so keep checking back.

MEMBERSHIPS:  Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $15 for Sunday only.  We are also offering Early Bird Admission for non-dealers for $60, which is a three day membership which allows entry to the dealer room on Friday at 10 a.m. (which is one hour after dealer setup begins and two hours before the con generally opens to the public).  Ages 13 & under are free.  Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account pulpvault@msn.com).

DEALER INFO:  Dealer setup begins Friday at 9 a.m. – the dealer room is open to the public from noon - 5 p.m. Friday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Early Bid Admission), 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday.  For dealers, tables are 6’ long.  Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs.  Wall tables are $90 and island tables are $80.  The dealer room will have around 120 tables.  Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a regular 3 day membership ($35).

PROGRAM BOOK:  All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints.  To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $40 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $25 (3.25" x 2").  The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 15, 2009.  Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@comcast.net for ad and other program book matters (other than payment).

ART SHOW:  We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art, highlighted by our display of Hubert Rogers art, as well as spicy pulp art.  For the fifth year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (www.illustration-magazine.com).  If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us.  The art show hours will be posted to the website when they are set.

AUCTIONS:  This year, we will be hosting TWO auctions.  Our Friday night auction will consist of material from the estate of Lamont award winner Frank Hamilton.  Saturday night’s auction will contain material from many sources.  If you have material you’d like to submit, please contact us.

WEBSITE: www.windycitypulpandpaper.com is the con’s website.  We’ll be posting updates to it periodically up until the time of the con, so please check it for the most recent information.

CON SUITE:  Our con suite will operate from Thursday night (come pick up your badges) until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby!

FILM PROGRAMMING:
Our film programming, which showcases films based on pulp stories, has been tentatively set. Once again, thanks go to Ed Hulse for organizing an amazing program. Any updates will be posted to the website. Incidentally, Ed is now known as the busiest man in the pulp convention business, as he's also on the committee of Pulpfest, to be held this summer -- check out www.pulpfest.com for details.  The tentative film schedule -- with Ed's commentary -- is:

******************************Friday******************************
12:00 pm  —  The Mark of Zorro (1920). The first Zorro film is also the most faithful adaptation of Johnston McCulley’s “The Curse of Capistrano,” serialized in All-Story Weekly during August and September of 1919. Dashing Douglas Fairbanks was already a popular leading man when he essayed the role of Don Diego Vega, but Mark of Zorro’s surprise success turned him into one of the cinema’s first true superstars. Although this film has always been available in one form or another, we’re showing the most recently restored version, which was mastered from archival film elements deriving from the original negative and boasts a newly recorded orchestral score. If you think of silent films as hopelessly creaky, sit in on Mark of Zorro. You just might be surprised.
02:00 pm  —  Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective (aka The Raven Red Kiss-Off, 1990). This year our convention celebrates the Diamond Anniversary of the Spicy pulp line, and this made-for-TV movie was the second of only two films we’ve identified as having been adapted from Spicy yarns. Based on a Robert Leslie Bellem story and scripted by regular Windy City attendee John Wooley, this fast-paced mystery is a bit too campy but great fun for pulp fans nonetheless. Note: We’re showing the seldom-seen Fries Entertainment home-video cut, which contains a few shots of partial nudity that weren’t in the original broadcast version.

04:00 pm  —  The Return of Wild Bill (1940). This above-average “B” Western, directed by cult favorite Joseph H. Lewis, was adapted from Walt Coburn’s “The Block K Rides Tonight,” which appeared in the July 1939 issue of Star Western. Popular cowboy star Gordon “Wild Bill” Elliott plays the two-fisted lawman who avenges the murder of his father. Lovely Iris Meredith, who played Nita Van Sloan in the Spider serial we showed last year, assumes leading-lady chores. We ran an old 16mm print of Return of Wild Bill at our 2003 convention, but this DVD has been specially mastered for us from a 35mm archival print.

Following Friday Night Auction  —  Bombay Mail (1934). An extremely rare film, never made available on home video or to cable movie channels, this nifty programmer combines high adventure and murder mystery. It was adapted from a Lawrence G. Blochman novel of the same name, which originally appeared in the August 15, 1933 issue of Complete Stories. The first of several Blochman yarns featuring Detective Inspector Leonidas Prike (renamed Dyke for this movie), Bombay Mail revolves around the murder of a British official aboard a Calcutta-Bombay train. The suspects include a Maharajah, a Russian opera singer, several Americans, and anti-British rebels. Edmund Lowe plays Dyke; the supporting cast includes Shirley Grey, Ralph Forbes, Onslow Stevens, and Hedda Hopper. Pieces from the evocative musical score by Heinz Roemheld were reused in part many times in subsequent years, most notably in the Flash Gordon serials.

******************************Saturday******************************
09:00 am  —  Blackmail (1947). This fast-paced, action-packed Republic Pictures whodunit was the first Dan Turner film and, therefore, the first adapted from a Spicy pulp story. William Marshall, a blond “himbo” who Republic desperately tried to make a star, plays the hard-boiled private eye, called to investigate the blackmailing of a famous movie director (former matinee idol Ricardo Cortez). Luscious blonde Adele Mara and haughty brunette Stephanie Bachelor are the femmes fatale, and Grant Withers appears as Dan’s foil, Police Inspector Donaldson. Fans of Robert Leslie Bellem’s yarns will get a kick out of hearing the author’s wacky dialogue spouted by these colorful characters, their verbal exchanges alternating with fistfights and car chases galore.

10:15 am  —  Blue, White and Perfect (1942). An entry in 20th Century-Fox’s Michael Shayne series, this polished whodunit was actually adapted from a Borden Chase novel featuring “Smooth Kyle.” Chase’s yarn, bearing the same title, was serialized in Argosy during September and October of 1937. Fox’s screenwriter Samuel G. Engel simply appropriated the pulpster’s plot and substituted Shayne for Kyle. One of the suspects is played by TV’s future Superman, George Reeves. Fast-moving and fun, Blue, White and Perfect is among the two or three best entries in the entire Michael Shayne series.

12:00 pm  —  Saturday Matinee: The Ivory-Handled Gun (1935) plus selected short subjects. We’re replicating a complete program that any American kid might have seen at his neighborhood theater on a Saturday afternoon in the mid ‘30s: coming-attractions trailer, cartoon, newsreel, serial episode (Chapter Two of Gordon of Ghost City, a 1933 chapter play loosely adapted from a Peter B. Kyne story), and feature film. The main attraction is The Ivory-Handled Gun, a Buck Jones Western adapted from the Charles E. Barnes novel of the same title published in the Second October 1930 issue of Ace-High. It’s one of Buck’s best starring vehicles of this period.

02:00 pm  —  I Wouldn’t Be in Your Shoes (1948). No Windy City film program would be complete without a movie taken from one of Cornell Woolrich’s pulp yarns, and this year we’ve dug up one of the scarcest. Based on the novelette of the same title published in the March 12, 1938 issue of Detective Fiction Weekly, this Monogram “B” stars Don Castle, Elyse Knox, and Regis Toomey in an adaptation scripted by former pulp writer Steve Fisher. It’s an exercise in low-budget film noir revolving around the familiar Woolrich situation of an ordinary guy framed for a murder he didn’t commit. Afraid that Woolrich’s ambiguous denouement wouldn’t make a satisfactory ending for the movie version, Fisher actually called his fellow pulpster for advice. Woolrich suggested that Fisher graft onto Shoes the ending from one of his famous stories—but you’ll have to see the film here to find out which Fisher tale was thus cannibalized.

03:30 pm  —  Private Detective (1938). Perky Jane Wyman stars in this minor but zippy little “B” from Warner Brothers, based on Kay Krause’s “Invitation to Murder,” published in the May 1937 issue of Pocket Detective. A seemingly routine child-custody hearing leads to murder, and female detective Myrna “Jinx” Winslow cracks the case with timely assistance from police lieutenant Jim Rickey (Dick Foran). Clearly fashioned after Warner’s popular Torchy Blane series (adapted from Frederick Nebel’s MacBride-Kennedy stories in Black Mask), Private Detective sports a supporting cast that’s practically a Who’s Who of popular ‘30s character actors.

Following Saturday Night Auction  —  The Law of the Forty-Fives (1935). An obscure little Poverty Row horse opera forgotten by all but the most rabid Western-movie fans, this is the first screen adaptation of a “Three Mesquiteers” novel by prolific pulpster William Colt MacDonald. The movie only features two of the three heroes, however; in his novel of the same title (serialized in Quick-Trigger Western from December 1929 to April 1930 and published in hard covers in 1933), MacDonald focused on his already-established twin protagonists, Tucson Smith and Stony Brooke. A deputy sheriff, Lullaby Joslin, joins them at story’s end and becomes the third Mesquiteer. This movie, which stars Guinn “Big Boy” Williams as Tucson and silent-screen comedian Al St. John as Stony, doesn’t give a name to the deputy character (played by Curley Baldwin). But let’s not quibble. The film is great cornball fun, with the numerous shortcomings—most owing to a minuscule budget and truncated shooting schedule—adding to its charm. And you won’t see it anywhere but here.
Age of Aces - Coming in February!

The Black Sheep of Belogue: The Best of O.B. Myers

Before he became a writer for the Pulp magazines, O.B. Myers was a decorated WWI fighter pilot.
He is able to bring those experiences to life in his fiction about the air war in Europe.
In this volume we introduce you to two of Myers’ best series.

The Black Sheep of Belogue: After his arrest for striking an inept superior officer, Yank ace Dynamite Pike escapes court martial and hides out at a hidden drome in the forest of Belogue. Along with his trusted mechanic Splicer Teale, he wages a private war against the Germans while also trying to evade capture by the Allies. These outlaw eagles, who call themselves “The Black Sheep of Belogue”, blaze an explosive trail through Europe’s war skies!

The Mongol Ace: Crack American pilot Clipper Stark is assigned the terrible task of stopping the seemingly invincible “Mongol Ace”. Janghiz Kaidu, a descendant of Genghis Khan, joins the German army so he can kill more of the hated Russians. Instead he is shipped off to the Western front where he is trained as a pilot. His sadistic nature makes him the Allies’ most feared and despised adversary. Only Clipper Stark can match the Mongol Ace’s ferocious skills. But can even he kill the unkillable? We also have two articles about Myers’ wartime exploits by fellow pilot Kenneth Sinclair that originally appeared in Battle Aces in November 1931. The Frederick Blakeslee cover painting depicts the actual dogfight that won O. B. Myers the Distinguished Service Cross.

Now in production for an April release:
The Adventures of Smoke Wade Volume 1 by Robert J. Hogan

AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS  DEBUTS FIRST PULP HORROR TITLE
Something big just got bigger.

Legendary cover artist Keith Birdsong has painted the cover for “Weird Horror Tales”, an homage to pulp magazines from the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s “Weird Tales” and “Horror Stories”. The collection was written by Michael Vance, and is now available.

Birdsong is famous for his extremely realistic covers for “Star Trek” novels, featuring the actors from the movies and television series. He has also done work for “Star Wars”, the cyberpunk role-playing game “Shadowrun”, and children’s books like “The Halloween Hex”. In addition, Birdsong’s work has been featured in films, on Hamilton Collection collectors’ plates, and on U.S. Postage stamps.

"Vance offers up thirteen tales of Lovecraftian horror with a deft sense of suspense and heart-pumping terror,” said Ron Fortier, editor of the title. “Earl Geier’s art for these stories is as stark and brutal as a cold knife’s edge.  His grasp of terror is second to none, and delivers nightmarish scenes with incredible, horrific feelings. Whereas Keith Birdsong’s cover is simply creepy to the max.  It is a work of intense imagination that will pull you into this collection like a twisted siren’s song.”

“My stories are founded on the premise that there is something larger than our narrow view of reality,” said Vance. “Each interconnected story shares setting, history, prominent families, and a macro plot.  The stories also focus on the Azrealites, a religious cult that works tirelessly to reinstate that ‘Other’ on Earth through science and the occult.”

These stories about the fictional town of “Light's End” in Maine have been published in dozens of magazines in three countries, including “Dark Corridor”, and have also been recorded by renowned actor William (“Murder She Wrote”) Windom.

The interior illustrations are by artist Earl Geier who is best known for his horror, fantasy and science fiction artwork. In the role playing game industry, his work includes art for “Battletech”, “Call of Cthulhu”, and many others. He has illustrated books for “Cemetery Dance” magazine, Chaosium, Gryphon and Subterranean Press. For comic book, he's had work published by Dark Horse Comics, Comiczone, Now, Innovation and DC Comics Paradox.

Vance has written for national and international magazines, and as a syndicated columnist and cartoonist in over 500 newspapers. His history book, “Forbidden Adventures”, has been called a "benchmark in comics history”. He briefly ghosted an internationally syndicated comic strip, wrote his own strip and several comic books. He is listed in the Who's Who of American Comic Books and Comic Book Superstars.

The publisher of “Weird Horror Tales”
Cornerstone Book Publishers also publishes Masonic and esoteric books, selected pulp fiction, art literature, limited children's books, and poetry collections. For more information about Cornerstone, go to www.cornerstonepublishers.com.

DOC SAVAGE Volume 24: "The Black, Black Witch," "Hell Below" & "The Shape or Terror"
The Man of Bronze wages war against the Axis in three pulse-pounding pulp thrillers by Lester Dent (writing as "Kenneth Robeson"). First, a desperate plea from occupied France lures Doc Savage into a Nazi trap as he attempts to discover the 400-year-old secret of "The Black, Black Witch." Then,  in "Hell Below," the Man of Bronze and his beautiful cousin Pat Savage journey to Mexico to prevent high-ranking fugitives from the Third Reich from creating a New World Order. Finally, Doc Savage must die to prevent the Nazis from obtaining a super weapon that could change the outcome of the war. This World War II collector's edition showcases the classic color pulp covers by Emery Clarke and Modest Stein, and also features all the original interior illustrations by Paul Orban and historical commentary by Will Murray, author of seven Doc Savage novels.

Gibson (writing as "Maxwell Grant"). First, not even The Shadow's bullets can stop his most formidable foe, "The Gray Ghost," a seemingly supernatural adversary. Bob Larkin - Attending this year's New York Comic Con, February 6–8!
Painter Bob Larkin (cover artist for Doc Savage, Dazzler, the Hulk, and dozens of others) will be attending this year's New York Comic Con, February 6–8 at the Jacob K. Javits Center. You'll be able to find Bob at Table G-11 in Artists Alley, right next to Colleen Doran. Bob will be promoting his latest projects:

THE SAVAGE ART OF BOB LARKIN, Vol. 1. The book is scheduled to come out in February, but (as of today) the copies are still making their way to the States on (literally) a slow boat *from* China.

A Doc Savage statue produced by Reel Art Studios, based on one of Bob's paintings. Reel Art plans to have the prototype on display at their booth.

Full-color prints of a faux Doc Savage movie poster. What might a Doc movie poster look like today, if Hollywood asked Bob to provide the art? Here's your chance to find out!

Darkside Press: THE FEASTER FROM AFAR - Now available!
THE FEASTER FROM AFAR by Joseph Payne Brennan
Joseph Payne Brennan was the last of the great WEIRD TALES authors as well as an accomplished poet, editor, and publisher. When WEIRD TALES folded just as Brennan was coming into his own as a master of the supernatural tale, Brennan’s main market for his fiction disappeared. Throughout the next few years Brennan launched a one-man crusade to keep the WEIRD TALES tradition alive in the pages of his small-press magazine Macabre. Published infrequently and run on a shoestring budget, Macabre still did a fine job of carrying the flag for stories of the weird and uncanny.
This is the first of four volumes that will collect all of his supernatural and macabre fiction in a matching set.

John Carter of Mars - Feature film update!
Ain't It Cool News reported a few more details about writer/director Andrew Stanton's upcoming live-action Disney movie John Carter of Mars, confirming some details previously reported and adding a few new ones.

From Stanton's presentation at the Santa Barbara Film Festival:
  • The style of the movie is going to be very real, not highly stylized. Since Star Wars and a glut of science fiction and fantasy films have ripped off giant portions of John Carter over the years, the only option Stanton sees is doing a straight, realistic version of the story, as if a National Geographic crew stumbled across a preserved civilization while exploring a cave.
  • Stanton wants to avoid 3-D but thinks that Disney might want to push him toward it.
  • Stanton is on the second draft of a script and will begin casting soon.
  • John Carter WILL be a Civil War soldier, as in Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom novels.

Kull, the newly crowned warrior-king, and Brule, a Pict emissary, are all that stand between the snake-men and the decimation of the Seven Empires. Robert E. Howard Foundation: The Collected Poetry of Robert E. Howard
The initial print run has sold out!
A second limited print run is now available for pre-order!
Don't delay, this may be the last opportunity to order this book!
There is no guarantee of a future softcover edition.
The book is now at the printers and it should be available in late January.

The Robert E. Howard Foundation is pleased to present The Collected Poetry of Robert E. Howard. This volume collects all of Howard’s known verse (more than 700 poems), excluding only certain draft and/or variant versions of his poems which are not significantly different from published versions. It also includes the prose poems published in Etchings in Ivory, title and first line indexes, and “Barbarian Bard: The Poetry of Robert E. Howard” by Steve Eng.

The book will contain several “firsts,” thanks to Paul Herman’s recent discovery of a cache of transcriptions at Ohio State University (of all places). These papers probably date back to the early 1960s and reveal all sorts of differences between these and the latter-published poems. “Long Ago,” for example, was missing a line in its first publication; the previously published version of “Victory” is very different from the one at OSU; and the OSU stash revealed a completely different version of “The Cats of Anubis” from the one published in Night Images. They’re so different, in fact, that both versions are included in Collected Poetry. And there’s lots of other little nuggets as well.

This massive volume, over 800 pages, will be printed in hardback with dust jacket, in a limited quantity of 150 individually numbered copies. Cover design is by Jim Keegan. The book is expected to ship early in 2009.

Price: For members of the
Robert E. Howard Foundation, Collected Poetry is $53; non-members pay $59. All prices are in U.S. dollars and exclude shipping, which is extra (see below). Curious about membership? Go here.

All Age of Aces books are $16.99 trade paperbacks and are available from
Amazon, Adventure House, or Mike Chomko Books.

CONAN VOLUME 7: CIMMERIA - Coming in June!
Written by Timothy Truman, penciled by Tomas Giorello and Richard Corben, colored by Jose Villarrubia.
Conan Volume 7: Cimmeria marks a transitional period in young Conan's life, as he spurns civilization -- with its turncoats and legal trappings -- and returns to the beloved, brutal country of Cimmeria, where he was born and raised. The dangers found in the snowy mountain passes of his barbaric homeland are a welcome change from the mind games and treachery Conan encountered in the cities of the East, but there are unfortunate lessons in treachery to be learned here, too. When a tentative truce with the Aesir is threatened by the actions of Caollan, the first woman Conan ever loved, Conan again finds himself at the heart of a larger conflict that will test not only his physical strength and cunning mind‹but his passionate heart as well.

FBI agent Bill Norton has been sent to Ketchikan, Alaska to track down his former boss, who's vanished while investigating a heroin smuggling ring. Norton instantly suspects the smugglers are operating from inside the local fishing fleet. But six months and a string of declared "accidental" drownings have failed to turn up any clues.
Norton's cold case heats up when the local radio station owner emerges, floating face-down at the docks, and a heart-stopping heiress to the halibut trade makes a maelstrom of trouble. Philip José Farmer
Posted by Mike Croteau:
The Farmerphile #15 is at the printer and will be ready to send out by January 27th. I still have not had a chance to add the details of this issue to the website, but I should have this done by the 27th. If you missed the announcements about it, this is our final issue. I will also be posting a list of which issues are nearly out of stock for those of you who have fallen behind and have only ordered some of the fifteen issues.

Contact
Mike Croteau as soon as possible to let him know if you plan on coming to Farmercon 91. This will be held June 6th, 2009 at the Peoria Public Library. We are trying now to book a block of rooms for this weekend at nice hotel, and the more people who are coming, the better rate we can get. Since we don't have two major conventions/events happening in Peoria on this particular weekend (unlike last year), we should be able to get everyone in the same hotel, where there will be lots of room for us to meet and hang out (again, unlike last year). Emailing me your intentions now, does not obligate you to pay for a room (and even if you are sure you are coming you don't have to reserve your room yet), I just need to get a good idea of how many are likely to come. So please let me know if you think you can make it. June 6th will be here before you know it!

With 2008 receding into memory and the holidays over, the PulpFest committee is back at work, planning and promoting this summer’s largest convention for fans and collectors of pulp magazines and other forms of vintage popular fiction.

We’ll be updating our web site regularly between now and the end of July, when
PulpFest finally gets underway. Make sure to check back every few weeks for information on our programming, updates to our steadily growing list of dealers and additional tidbits relating not only to the convention but also to our hobby in general.

We realize that, for some of you, it may seem too early to start planning a summer excursion. If so, you might want to reconsider: our host hotel, the Ramada Plaza, has already received numerous room reservations from
PulpFest attendees—and we expect that number to increase sharply in the weeks and months ahead. To make a reservation, call the hotel at 614-846-0300. Please remember to mention PulpFest to get our special rate.

At this time we’d also encourage you to check into airfares. In recent weeks, airfares have come down. They may very well drop more if demand continues to soften. Why not lock in your fare this winter, rather than wait until the peak months of spring or summer, when demand goes up and prices begin to rebound?

We chose
PulpFest’s host city with air travel in mind. Columbus is a hub for many domestic airlines and can be easily reached from anywhere in the country. Southwest Airlines, which is noted for its competitive pricing and customer service, offers regular flights to Columbus from more than fifty major metropolitan areas including Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, DC, Nashville, Orlando, St. Louis, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

While you’re thinking about lodging and travel options, we’ll be hard at work coming up with convention programming and arranging for advertising. As promised, we plan to promote
PulpFest as aggressively as time and money allows, not only appealing to the known community of pulp fans but also reaching out to collector constituencies with related interests. We remain firmly committed to bringing new people into the hobby.

Please remember that
PulpFest is your convention. We’re interested in your suggestions. We’ve already received many great ideas and want to thank those of you who have written to us. Your input has been very helpful.

The Pulp Rack - New addition!
Mike Ashley is an indefatigable bibliographer, anthologist, and historian of fiction magazines. He’s sort of a genre fiction bon vivant. If you’ve ever walked through the fiction aisles of a bookstore, you’ve probably seen at least one of his many Mammoth Book Of anthologies of stories. The only topic I can think of he hasn’t tackled is an anthology of stories about international covert plumbers. Ahem. I may be wrong. He has written The biography of ghost-story author Algernon Blackwood and a trio (at this count) of books narrating the history of science fiction magazines. A recent book written for the British Library, The Age of the Story Tellers: British Popular Fiction Magazines 1880-1950, is the definitive history of magazine fiction during its heyday. I must admit, I enjoy just about everything Mike puts his hand (or typewriter) to.  Mike wrote the article for the Pulp Era Amateur Press Society (PEAPS), a collection of pulp fiction fans, collectors, and readers. Mike very graciously provided permission to publish it here, and I am very, very happy to do so.

You can find Mike's great essay at this URL:  http://pulprack.com/arch/2009/01/the_longest_run.html

Beneath Ceaseless Skies #8 - Now available online!
The new issue of Beneath Ceaseless Skies is now available and features:

"Beneath the Mask," by Aliette de Bodard
I well knew that only human blood and human lives kept the end of the world at bay. I had abased myself before gods, offered them what they needed, from human hearts to flayed skins; I had wielded many obsidian knives myself in many sacrifices. But the concentration of images in that room seemed almost unhealthy.

"Winterblood," by Megan Arkenberg
The young man’s eyes fixed on my face, his straight, dark brows elegantly raised. I pressed myself against him and forced down a shiver. It may have only been the wine, but it seemed to me that, even through the layers of silk and brocade, I could feel the cold radiating from his flesh.

Audio Fiction Podcast 005

"Precious Meat," by Catherine S. Perdue
I lifted my muzzle and sniffed. The wood was different today. Fine dust still hung in the air and sparkled in sunlit shafts. Such a thing this sparkling was. I gazed at it in wonder. Had the light ever been just so before? Was this a new thing?

Flesk Publications: Jules Verne's Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
Adapted and Illustrated by Gary Gianni   - Now available!
Flesk Publications is proud to present a graphic novelization of Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by the celebrated illustrator and writer of books, comics, and comic strips, Gary Gianni. The Verne novel, which has been adapted into films and illustrated in numerous forms, receives an exciting fresh visual approach allowing the reader to experience the story anew. A life-long fan of Verne’s novel, Gianni proves the perfect foil for this visually stunning recreation, penned by the “Father of Science Fiction.” Gianni’s adaptation wholly preserves the sense of wondrous adventure, while sacrificing nothing by way of plot or the finer nuances of character. This finely distilled narrative combines skillfully rendered depictions of the men and the machines they command. Their encounters with astounding marvels and terrible monsters, above and below the waves, create a rich and rewarding reading experience unlike any other. This oversized, hardbound volume will also include the full text of “The Sea Raiders,” a short story by H.G. Wells, accompanied by ten original illustrations created for this edition by Gianni. Jim Keegan supplies the colors. Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea promises to be a book which will be treasured for years to come by readers of all ages.

Leonaur Books - Now available!
Leonaur is pleased to announce the next two volumes in its Quatermain: the Complete Adventures series. Some of H. Rider Haggard's tales of the intrepid Allan Quatermain's African adventures are very well known, others surprisingly little known. This exclusive Leonaur collection brings them all together in a coherent and uniform collection, available in hardcover and softcover, for the modern reader.

Quatermain: the Complete Adventures 3 by H. Rider Haggard
Child of Storm & Allan and the Holy Flower
The great man of Africa strides out with two more adventures
This is the third volume of the collected adventures of Allan Quatermain—hunter, trader, explorer and adventurer—set once again in the exotic landscape of nineteenth century South East Africa at a time when the continent was still truly 'dark'. Quatermain here ventures once more into the ever perilous lands of the mighty Zulu nation and there in 'The Child of the Storm', the first tale in this book he finds himself embroiled with a femme fatale, intrigue, treachery, sorcery and a battle for the throne of the kingship of the Zulu nation which erupts in into full scale civil war. In the second story 'Allan and the Holy Flower', our hero finds himself on the potentially more gentle activity of the quest for a rare orchid. Perhaps predictably that also involves conflict with slavers, abductions, fierce tribes, cannibalism and a demon god in the form of a giant gorilla.

Softcover - $23.99
Hardcover - $34.99

Quatermain: the Complete Adventures 4 by H. Rider Haggard
Finished & The Ivory Child
Caught between the red and the black—Quatermain at war!
In this, the fourth volume of Allan Quatermain's adventures in the turbulent world of nineteenth century Africa, our hero once again finds it impossible to lead the simple outdoor life of a hunter and trader that he always craves. Now it is the late 1870s and the imperial world powers are overtaking the remaining primitive corners of the globe. The British Empire now borders on Zululand and nothing will satisfy the British but the dissolution of the Zulu Impis themselves—in fact the destruction of the Zulu way of life. In 'Finished' Allan finds himself caught up in these momentous times. In 1879 the Zulu War breaks out and Allan finds himself at Isandlwhana within the doomed ranks of red soldiery.
In the 'Ivory Child', Quatermain’s adventures become more personal. A beautiful young woman has been abducted into Africa's dark heart to become an unholy priestess. She must be rescued but there are many perils and once again a war erupts between rival native factions which threatens to destroy Allan and his friends.

Softcover - $24.99
Hardcover - $35.99

CULT OF THE CORPSES by Maxwell Hawkins

Introduction by John Locke

Two weird detective novelettes from Detective-Dragnet Magazine. "Cult of the Corpses" (January 1931) puts a detective on the trail of a murderous voodoo cult operating out of a Manhattan nightclub. "Dealers in Death" (July 1931) pits a detective against the machinations of the insidious Mr. Letherius, a contract killer who specializes in bizarre and undetectable forms of murder.

These are early (and entertaining) examples of the early '30s trend toward weird detective stories. Included is a detailed discussion of the trend; and a profile of author Maxwell Hawkins.

Stories complete with original illustrations.

Pixar: John Carter of Mars - Film update!
WALL-E director Andrew Stanton told SCI FI Wire that he is working on a new draft of his proposed John Carter of Mars movie and is aiming for a realistic feel to the live-action movie, his first.

"[I'm] deep into it," Stanton said in an exclusive interview at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association award ceremony in Century City, Calif., on Monday, where he accepted the award for best picture of 2008 for WALL-E. "I'm on my next draft of it. We're in preproduction art-wise, and we're starting to talk to actors. So it's full bore."

Stanton confirmed that Carter, based on the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, will be live-action. "Yeah, I think that's the only way," he said. "I mean, there are so many creatures and characters that half of it's going to be CG whether you want it to be [or not], just to realize some of these images that are in the book. But it will feel real. The whole thing will feel very, very believable."

THE RED THUMB MARK by R. Austin Freeman
A MYSTERIOUS THUMB PRINT. If ever a young man found himself in a tight situation, Reuben Hornby did on the morning he walked into Dr. Thorndyke's office in company with his lawyer. Here were the facts as they were outlined to the specialist in medical jurisprudence. Two weeks before the visit to Dr. Thorndyke, a parcel of diamonds had been removed from the office safe where Mr. Hornby worked, while the keys were in the possession of John Hornby. There were two drops of blood on the bottom of the safe and one or two bloody smears on a piece of paper which bore also the very clear imprint of a thumb which corresponded exactly with Reuben Hornby's thumb. There follows the unfolding of the mystery. This is the first volume in the Dr. Thorndyke Series.

ADVENTURE HOUSE
Now available direct from Adventure House!
THE THRILL BOOK Volume 1 (of 3, possibly 4)
The first seven issues from 1919 (all edited by Harold Hersey) of this classic Street & Smith pulp magazine that ran for a total of sixteen twice-monthly issues.
$70 (hardbound)
Hardbound Book, 8.5x11, 402 pages
First 7 Issues: March 1, 1919 - June 1, 1919

An Adventure House exclusive!
THE THRILL BOOK has always had mythical status among pulp and science fiction fans.  Introduced during the early days of pulp magazines, THE THRILL BOOK's first seven issues were published using the same dimensions and page counts as the dying genre of magazines known as "Dime Novels."  Saddle stitched, with only 48 pages, THE THRILL BOOK broke the mold for "Dime Novels."  Its stories had nothing in commong with any other "Dime Novel", even its price was twice the norm for the so-called "Dime Novels" which actually cost only a nickel.

Yet, its impact on "Fantastic" fiction to come isn't denied.  Published on a bi-monthly basis, THE THRILL BOOK lasted a scant sixteen issues, and continues to stif the imagination of collectors and readers alike.

Adventure House brings you in multiple volumes, the entire THRILL BOOK saga.  Complete with all illustrations, filler and poetry, THE THRILL BOOK COMPLETE is well...just that...complete for the first time since its cancellation in 1919!
This title is only available direct from Adventure House!
You can now place your order on the Adventure House website.
The book will begin shipping in January.

Subsequent volumes will be available at a later date.

Age of Aces - Now available!
The Three Mosquitoes: "The Magic Inferno"
This is the second collection of stories featuring
The Three Mosquitoes by Ralph Oppenheim.

Once more, their familiar battle cry rings out: ”Let’s Go!”
And the three khaki Spads take to the air, flying intoterror skies each sporting the famous Mosquito insignia. In the cockpits sat the three warriors who were known wherever men flew as the greatest and most hell raising trio of aces ever to blaze their way through overwhelming odds. Always in front was Kirby, their impetuous young leader. Flanking him on either side were mild-eyed and corpulent Shorty Carn, and lanky Travis, the eldest and wisest Mosquito.

From the pages of Popular Publications’ air war pulp magazines, author Ralph Oppenheim—who had never been in an airplane—brings us four more unforgettable adventures of this reckless and inseparable trio from 1932 and 1933: The Magic Inferno, The TNT Patrol, The Suicide Patrol, and The Flying Stingaree.

Written by Timothy Truman, penciled by Tomas Giorello, colored by Jose Villarrubia, cover by Joseph Michael Linsner.

As the "Black Colossus" story arc continues, this issue focuses on Natohk, as he builds his army of desert tribesmen, bloodthirsty nomads, and demons to begin his invasion of Hyboria! Natohk has his sights set on the border city of Khoraja first, and he sends his fearsome horde to take it and begin their full assault on Koth -- a country filled with petty, quarreling rulers. Heading toward Khoraja with the rest of Amalric's mercenaries, Conan is still learning the ways of military discipline and strategy, impressing his leader while also making some enemies among Amalric's foot soldiers. Princess Yasmela is Khoraja's remaining sovereign. Haunted by terrifying apparitions and demonic visits, she prays to Mitra for help as Natohk's forces near her war-torn country and her near-defenseless city.

DARKSIDE PRESS/MIDNIGHT HOUSE
THE FEASTER FROM AFAR

EDD CARTIER
Famous pulp magazine illustrator of THE SHADOW, UNKNOWN and ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION
(Also Street & Smith's Red Dragon Comics, Super-Magician Comics, King Features and Harvey Comics)
Written by Anthony Tollin

Edward Daniel Cartier, one of the legendary illustrators from the golden age of pulp fiction, died December 25, 2008, in his Ramsey, NJ home.

Cartier created more than 800 illustrations for The Shadow Magazine, painted five covers and produced more than 200 interior illustrations for Unknown and nearly 300 illustrations for Astounding Science Fiction. The favorite artist of John W.Campbell and writer L. Ron Hubbard, Cartier also illustrated science fiction stories by Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, Theodore Sturgeon, Clifford D. Simak and L. Sprague de Camp, and also horror stories by Robert Bloch and John D. MacDonald's early mystery fiction.

Cartier began illustrating stories for Street & Smith, the leading publisher of pulp fiction magazines, while still a student at Brooklyn's Pratt Institute's School of Fine and Applied Arts, where he majored in pictorial illustration and studied under illustrators Harold Winfield Scott and William James, a Street & Smith art director who gave Cartier his first professional assignments.  "I began by doing a single illustration per week for Street & Smith pulps like Wild West Weekly, Movie Action and Detective Story Magazine while still attending Pratt," he recently recalled, "and was initially paid eight dollars for each drawing."

Graduating in 1936, Cartier received his first ongoing assignment illustrating The Shadow's adventures. "The regular artist, Tom Lovell, was moving on to pursue a painting career, so I alternated with him illustrating the twice-monthly novels. My first work for The Shadow Magazine accompanied 'The Sledge-Hammer Crimes' in the August 1st, 1936 issue, coincidentally my twenty-second birthday."
After he began illustrating The Shadow, Cartier received a letter from Norman Rockwell offering him a job as an assistant. "I went to Harold and asked his opinion. 'If you study with Norman Rockwell, you're just going to become another Norman Rockwell,' Scott advised. 'You'll be influenced entirely by him. You should remain on your own.' So I turned down Rockwell's job offer, though I have regretted doing so ever since."

Shortly after graduation, Cartier leased a Manhattan studio with Earl Mayan, a future Saturday Evening Post cover artist. Cartier later returned home to New Jersey and set up his second studio above [his father's] Cartier's Saloon in his hometown of North Bergen. "Although I continued to contribute drawings to the other Street & Smith pulps, The Shadow Magazine quickly became the focus of my career.... The gritty atmosphere of The Shadow's relentless fight against crime gave me the opportunity to illustrate a weird and fantastic world. Much of the action took place in my stylized visions of urban locales: dark hallways, one-room flats, spooky mansions, dingy subways, dead-end alleys and fog-shrouded wharves. I especially liked doing full-throttle scenes of speeding boats, steam-belching locomotives, crashing cars and  hovering autogyros."

Cartier also illustrated the adventures of Hook McGuire, bowling detective, and some three dozen tales, written by Steve Fisher as "Grant Lane," about a young, shoeshine-boy detective named Danny Garrett that appeared as backup stories in The Shadow Magazine, and stories for Street & Smith's other mystery magazines including The Whisperer, The Wizard and Detective Story Magazine.

In 1939, the editor of Street & Smith's  Astounding Science-Fiction offered him the opportunity to illustrate Unknown, a groundbreaking magazine of horror and supernatural fiction. "John W. Campbell, Jr., thought I would be ideally suited to illustrating fantasy. I always enjoyed drawing the weird and fantastic nature of The Shadow's adventures. And John said he had often admired that quality in my illustrations before he asked me to illustrate Unknown. After I illustrated the lead story in the first issue of Unknown - with my former instructor Harold Scott providing the cover painting - William James asked me if I would mind having someone else take over The Shadow so I could concentrate on science fiction and fantasy. I said it was okay with me, since I also liked science fiction. When I was a kid, my brothers Alfred and  Vincent read as much science fiction as they could get their hands on. They had Hugo Gernsback¹s magazines, and shared them with me. At first, I thought the stories were too fantastic. But I was soon hooked on the genre. After I became an illustrator, I knew it would be fascinating to do science fiction art, and I was pleased to move on to Unknown and, also, Astounding Science Fiction."

Drafted in 1941, Cartier served as an infantryman and as a heavy machine gunner in a tank battalion, fighting in France and Germany. He was severely wounded in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge and again when his hospital train was blown apart, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He returned to Street & Smith after the war, illustrating The Shadow, Astounding and Doc Savage, and also producing cover and interior art for Red Dragon Comics and Super-Magician Comics. His stylish and whimsical illustrations inspired generations of science fiction artists including Frank Kelly Freas, and comic book ilustrators including Mort Meskin, Batman artists Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson, and EC's Joe Orlando.

"Cartier was just an amazing artist," observes Mike Grell, longtime illustrator of DC Comic's Legion of Super-Heroes and The Warlord. "The volume of his work is nothing compared to the quality. I loved his black and white Shadow illustrations - talk about solid. Having to draw for reproduction in the pulps, he made the best use of blacks and, more importantly, whites - like painting with light!"

During the early 1950s, Cartier was the premier artist for the Fantasy Press and Gnome Press book publishing houses, and illustrated the delightful Hoka stories by Poul Anderson and Gordon R. Dickson.

A longtime friend of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, Cartier served for two decades as a judge for the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest. In 1994, Cartier attended the world premiere of The Shadow movie as a guest of Universal Pictures, and was delighted to see the look of his old pulp illustrations come to life on screen.

Cartier's wife of 65 years, Georgina, died earlier in the year. He is survived by sons Dean Cartier of Ramsey, NJ, and Kenn Cartier and his wife Ryoko of Redmond, WA, and grandchildren, Marika, Leland, and the late Elissa.

GABRIEL HUNT - Coming May 2009!
Charles Ardai, Edgar Award-winning author and creator of the acclaimed pulp mystery series Hard Case Crime, announced a new series of pulp novels scheduled to debut in the summer of 2009: The Adventures of Gabriel Hunt. Featuring painted covers in the grand pulp tradition by artist Glen Orbik, the series will chronicle the travels and travails of modern-day explorer Gabriel Hunt, who scours the globe in pursuit of precious artifacts, lost civilizations, and secrets that could save the world...or destroy it.

"These books are for anyone who grew up reading H. Rider Haggard and Edgar Rice Burroughs or watching Harrison Ford wield his bullwhip at the movies," said Ardai. "We're talking classic adventure fiction, complete with horses, snakes, shovels, pickaxes, torches, traps, bottomless pits, barroom brawls, jungles, jewels, and just about everything else that's ever made your heart beat faster."

Authorship of each book will be credited to Gabriel Hunt himself, with the hands behind the Hunt nom-de-plume scheduled to include some of Hard Case Crime's most popular authors. James Reasoner is the author of one of the upcoming Gabriel Hunt novels.
The first title is due to hit bookstores in May 2009, with subsequent titles following every other month.

Gabriel Hunt's initial adventures are expected to take him to Borneo, Guatemala, Turkey, Egypt, Antarctica, and the Kalahari Desert.

Update: Covers for six of the upcoming novels have now been posted on the Hunt for Adventure website. Check them out! Story titles are AT THE WELL OF ETERNITY, THROUGH THE CRADLE OF FEAR, AT WORLD'S END, BEYOND THE FROZEN FIRE, AMONG THE KILLERS OF MEN, and THROUGH NAPOLEON'S WEB!

The Magazine of Fantasy & SF
The Magazine of Fantasy & SF is switching to bimonthly publication. 'Rising costs -- especially postal costs -- and the economy put us in a position where we either had to raise our rates severely or cut back somewhere. Given the state of the economy, I decided a cutback on frequency made the most sense. We'll lose a little more than 10% of our content this year, but publishing on a bimonthly schedule should put us in a great position for the coming years.

Philip José Farmer: The Evil in Pemberley House - Coming in September/October!
"For over thirty years, readers have marveled at Philip José Farmer's inventive integration of popular fiction and literature's most beloved characters, in a mythical web known as the Wold Newton Family. First described in the fictional biographies Tarzan Alive: The Definitive Biography of Lord Greystoke and Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life, Farmer expanded his Wold Newton mythos in novels such as The Other Log of Phileas Fogg, The Adventure of the Peerless Peer, Time's Last Gift, Hadon of Ancient Opar, Flight to Opar, The Dark Heart of Time: A Tarzan Novel, and Escape from Loki: Doc Savage's First Adventure.

The Evil in Pemberley House, an addition to the Wold Newton cycle, plays with the Gothic horror tradition. Patricia Wildman, the daughter of the world-renowned adventurer and crimefighter of the 1930s and '40s, Dr. James Clarke "Doc" Wildman, is all alone in the world when she inherits the family estate in Derbyshire, England, old, dark, and supposedly haunted.

But Farmer, characteristically, turns convention on its ear. Is the ghost real, or a clever sham? In Patricia Wildman, Farmer creates an introspective character who struggles to reconcile the supernatural with her rational scientific upbringing, while also attempting to work through unresolved feelings about her late parents. He sets the action at Pemberley from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and ingrains the various mysteries in the Canon of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

The Evil in Pemberley House is a darkly erotic novel with broad appeal to readers of pulp and popular literature, particularly followers of Doc Savage, Sherlockians, and fans of Farmer's own celebrated Wold Newton Family."

Looks like Subterranean Press' projected release date for the Trade hardback edition is September 2009 (based on the Amazon.com listing), with a list price of $35.

ReelArt Studios has gained the rights to
Doc Savage and The Shadow!!!

Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the original superhero Doc Savage, ReelArt Studios announces a new licensing agreement with Advance Magazine Publishers Inc.’s Condé Nast Publications division to produce collectible statues and busts based on the legendary pulp hero. Also included in the agreement is Condé Nast’s other pulp era icon, The Shadow.

“Wow, I’m blown away. I’ve been seeking this license for five years and it has finally come to fruition. I couldn’t be more thrilled,” proclaimed Michael Hudson, president of ReelArt Studios/Sequential Pulp Comics. Both Doc Savage and The Shadow have been back in the public eye lately, through the efforts of Anthony Tollin and Nostalgia Ventures, Inc. Their wildly popular series of officially licensed trade paperbacks, launched in 2006, feature the two characters in reissues of their classic pulp stories.

The Doc Savage statue, the first release under the license by ReelArt Studios, is based on original art by acclaimed artist Bob Larkin who
successfully continued the look of the character established by James Bama on the Bantam paperback reprints in the 1960s. States Hudson, “Although I personally love the Paul Baumhofer covers from the pulps I feel that today’s audience will see Doc more as Bama, Larkin and those who have followed have envisioned him. Since the statue depicts a man larger than life we chose to go with a larger format than we usually do. At 18-3/4 inches from base to the top of Doc’s head we hopefully will have a piece that will take prominence in most settings.” There will be a strictly limited edition run of 1,000 units produced in pre-painted resin, and 30 units made to order in true bronze.

An avid long time Doc Savage fan, project sculptor Tony Cipriano masterfully crafted an incredibly detailed three-dimensional rendering of the Larkin artwork. Tony’s enthusiasm to create a great work of art and to please Doc fans is evident in the finished product. Tony eagerly stated, “I love these books! They are great reading. Doc fans seem to know everything about the character and I just want to be accurate. This is my new favorite piece I've ever done. I didn't think anything could surpass Frazetta’s Snow Giants in that respect, but I think because of the larger scale, the subject matter, and the simple museum style pose, this one is my new favorite.” Cipriano is currently at work on his rendition of The Shadow for ReelArt, based on the original pulp artwork of George Rozen.

The prototype of the painted resin version of the statue, paint-mastered by Kat Sapene, will make its public debut at the New York Comic Con February 6-8, 2009 at ReelArt Studios’ Booth 828. Artist Bob Larkin will be on hand signing prints of the artwork that the statue was based on. Sculptor Tony Cipriano is also scheduled to make an appearance at the booth.

WAR EAGLES - Now available!
Inspired by an original concept by Merian C. Cooper
Just prior to the start of WWII, a publicly humiliated Army Air Corps test pilot, court-martialed and discharged from the service for an unauthorized flight that ultimately endangered the life of President Roosevelt, takes the only job he can get – flying an experimental airplane around the world from pole to pole. When his plane is unexpectedly attacked and crashes on an uncharted island above the Arctic Circle, the pilot discovers a strange land inhabited by a lost tribe of Norsemen who ride giant eagles and, in a surprising turn of events, becomes America’s only hope against a devastating sneak attack by the Nazis and their powerful new electromagnetic weapon.

Merian C. Cooper was larger-than-life — producer, ace fighter pilot, explorer, much like the men in his movies. He was also a mentor for Ray Harryhausen, who became the undisputed master of stop-motion photography and produced films including The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, 20 Million Miles to Earth and Clash of the Titans. Now, Ray Harryhausen proudly reintroduces Cooper’s dream project, War Eagles, to the world as the first entry in the Ray Harryhausen Presents brand of new novels.

Screenwriter, filmmaker and author Carl Macek first came to public attention as the producer, writer and story editor of the influential animated television series Robotech (1985). Known as one of the foremost producers of anime adaptations thru the 1980s and 90s, Macek has recently turned his attention to new material outside the field of animation.

--And Their Memory Was a Bitter Tree: Queen of the Black Coast and Others
by Robert E Howard (Author), Arnie Fenner (Foreword), H. P. Lovecraft (Afterword)

As one of the three most important American pulp fantasy authors of the 1930s (with Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith), Robert E. Howard captivated readers with his indomitable, battle-scarred barbarian hero Conan. And Their Memory Was a Bitter Tree features a color map of this realm and an interior painting by cult artist Brom, along with a series of Frank Frazetta's seminal Conan paintings, appearing for the first time with the stories for which they were created.

Conan's Brethren - Coming in September!
Robert E. Howard was a pulp writer who turned his hand from everything from historical adventure and detective stories to western and boxing fiction - and invented the genre now known as sword-and-sorcery: it is for these tales of heroic fantasy and horror that he is best remembered. In the pages of WEIRD TALES and other pulp magazines his mighty heroes - the vengeful Puritan swashbuckler Solomon Kane, King Kull, his first barbarian hero, followed later by Conan the Cimmerian, Bran Mak Morn, the last of the Picts, and many others.

Following on from the success of THE COMPLETE CONAN, this companion volume will contain all the Robert E. Howard stories featuring Conan's brothers-in-arms, collected together in chronological order, as fresh and atmospheric today as when they were first published in the pulp magazines of more than eighty years ago. Compiled by and with an Afterword by award-winning writer and editor Stephen Jones.

Conan the Barbarian: The Original, Unabridged Conan Adventures - Coming in May!
Conan the Barbarian is a name known throughout Cimmeria, Brythinia, Turan and all the territories bordering the Vilayec Sea - as well as most countries more familiar to us in the real world. Upwards of fifty novels and countless short stories featuring Conan have been written by a diversity of authors but the stories contained in this massive volume are all by the character's creator, Robert E Howard. Prefaced by an essay called 'The Hyborian Age', which Howard wrote in 1932 to give his Conan stories a background that would set them in a historical context, "Conan the Barbarian" includes the stories originally written by Howard to be published in the magazine "Weird Tales" in the 1930s. These include the first published Conan story "The Phoenix on the Sword" and short stories such as "The Tower of the Elephant" through to longer tales like "A Witch Shall Be Born" and the novel "The Hour of the Dragon". Although many have taken up the challenge to extend Conan's adventures over the years, Howard was a master of his craft, lovingly creating a mythical world in which his original masterpieces reign supreme.

Donald E. Westlake, Mystery Writer, Is Dead at 75
Donald E. Westlake, a prolific, award-winning mystery novelist who pounded out more than 100 books and five screenplays on manual typewriters during his half-century career, died Wednesday night. He was 75.

Mr. Westlake collapsed, apparently from a heart attack, as he headed out to New Year’s Eve dinner while on vacation in Mexico, said his wife, Abigail Westlake. Mr. Westlake, considered one of the most successful and versatile mystery writers in the United States, has earned three Edgar Awards, an Academy Award nomination for screenplay writing, and the elite title of Grand Master from the Mystery Writers of America in 1993.

Since his first novel, “The Mercenaries,” was published by Random House in 1960, Mr. Westlake has written under his own name and several pseudonyms, including Richard Stark, Tucker Coe, Samuel Holt and Edwin West. Despite the diversity of names, one shared feature was that almost all his books were set in New York City, where he was born. He used many names in part to combat skepticism over his rapid rate of writing books, which at some points reached four a year.

He was writing all the way till he passed away. His next novel, “Get Real,” is scheduled to be released in April 2009.

Haffner Press
Coming in February!

HAFFNER PRESS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE . . .
THE COLLECTED EDMOND HAMILTON  - AUTHORIZED EDITION

Edmond Moore Hamilton (1904-1977) was one of the early pioneers of American science fiction. For fifty years his stories established and popularized many of the tropes in modern science fiction. Later this year, Haffner Press will launch the first salvo in a program authorized by the Estate of Edmond Hamilton to collect all the prose work of this neglected master. All of his science fiction, all the fantasy, all the mysteries--all the stories and novels (including the entire run of the "Captain Future" adventures) will be assembled in this multi-volume set.

• The Metal Giants and Others: The Collected Edmond Hamilton, Volume One
• The Star Stealers: The Complete Tales of the Interstellar Patrol, The Collected Edmond Hamilton, Volume Two
• The Collected Captain Future, Volume One: Captain Future and the Space Emperor

As with all Haffner Press titles, quality is of prime importance.  Each volume of THE COLLECTED EDMOND HAMILTON will be printed on acid-free archival-quality paper with smythe-sewn hardcover bindings using full-cloth covered boards. Full-color dust jackets will reproduce digitally restored covers from the original pulp magazines.

We are currently lining up a stellar group of writers, editors, historians, and friends of Hamilton to provide insightful introductions for each volume.
Keep Watching the Skies and check the Haffner Press website frequently for updates on this project. We have a lot of neat tie-ins to this particular program, and you won't want to miss at thing.

The Outlaws of Mars
by Otis Adelbert Kline, with an introduction by Joe R. Lansdale

Otis Adelbert Kline’s final triumphant sword-and-planet epic roars back into print for the first time in almost 50 years!  Jerry Morgan accepts his scientist uncle’s offer to transport him to Mars for a series of thrilling adventures and exploits featuring terrible monsters, fantastic societies, and gorgeous princesses in the Edgar Rice Burroughs tradition.

At last presented in the original, unabridged format last seen in 1934’s Argosy Weekly, the new Planet Stories edition of this science fiction classic restores Kline to his place of honor in the sword and planet field. A charming introduction by Joe R. Lansdale (“Bubba Hotep,” The Bottoms) puts the novel into a modern context for readers unfamiliar with Kline’s legacy.

Wildside Press - Finally available in hardcover!
“THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE” by Varick Vanardy
Written by the “father of [serial detective] Nick Carter,” Frederic Van Rensselaer Dey, and published by the man who introduced the “pulp” magazine to the world, Frank A. Munsey, the Night Wind was a super-endowed character whose fictional life-span ran from 1913 to the early 1920s.

Bingham Harvard, alias the Night Wind, used his prodigious strength (roughly 5 times that of the average man) to rescue himself, friends and family from various plots of “frame-ups,” extortion and outright physical violence.  His exploits were serialized in Munsey’s THE CAVALIER and ALL-STORY WEEKLY just a few months after the appearance of Tarzan in October 1912 and wrapping up just before the first appearance of Zorro on August 1919 by the same publisher.

Upon the close of a pulp magazine serial, the installments were bound and reissued in hardcover format.  There were a total of four hardcover novels starring the Night Wind: ALIAS “THE NIGHT WIND,” THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND, THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE, and LADY OF THE NIGHT WIND.  In 1923 the first novel was adapted for the silent screen and released with much popular appeal as ALIAS “THE NIGHT WIND.”

After almost 100 years out of print, ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND was re-released by Wildside Press in March 2007.  The Wildside Press edition of the sequel: THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND was released in September 2007.  Now the third installment: THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE is now available once again.  Re-typeset - but not revised or abridged in any way, this edition comes with an informative introduction by Christopher Yates, editor of the Wildside Press editions of the Night Wind series, explaining that the Night Wind is the archetype for today’s most popular heros.  In addition, this book sports the color cover from one of the magazine installments from the original run of THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE in ALL-STORY WEEKLY magazine from October 26, 1918.

ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND and THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND are available now from Barnes & Noble.com, Amazon.com and Diesel eBooks in hardcover, paperback and ebook formats

The first Sexton Blake story was ‘The Missing Millionaire’, which appeared in the penny dreadful ‘The Halfpenny Marvel’ on 20th December 1893, written by Harry Blyth (under the pen-name Hal Meredeth). Only a handful of the Sexton Blake stories were written by Meredeth, as the nine guinea fee for his first story included payment for the copyright of the character!

Sexton Blake faced a number of memorable villains over the years, many of whom became almost as well known as the detective himself - such as Waldo the Wonderman, Zenith the Albino, Leon Kestrel and George Marsden Plummer.

Wordsworth is pleased to announce that agreement has been reached with the owners of the rights of the character, IPC Media, to publish a collection of some of the best stories, which will be published under the title ‘The Casebook of Sexton Blake’ in March 2009.
