Hippocampus Press - New and forthcoming titles! We've determined our releases for the remainder of this year and 2009. Brief descriptions follow; please visit the Hippocampus Press website to learn more, and to order. When you buy our books in advance of publication, you enable the operating of the press, and provide valuable insight into your preferences. Whether you'd like to see more original fiction, Mythos anthologies, Lovecraft or related literary criticism, or Lovecraft's Library reprints, cast your vote by ordering today. Along these forthcoming releases, and the Lovecraft-Howard letters set already announced, we have issued a second printing of THE PLACE CALLED DAGON with remarkable new cover art by Allen Koszowski, complementing his interior illustrations. Other titles in preparation include DEAD RECKONINGS #4; a volume of original poetry by Charles Lovecraft and Phillip A. Ellis, and WEIRD WORDS: A Lovecraftian Lexicon compiled by Daniel Clore. More on these titles later. Classics and Contemporaries: Some Notes on Horror Fiction by S. T. Joshi November 2008: ISBN 978-0-9814888-3-7: $20.00 S. T. Joshi has established himself as a leading critic and scholar of the weird tale. Having begun by studying the work of H. P. Lovecraft, Joshi has expanded his interests to include the entire range of horror fiction from such classics as Lord Dunsany and Algernon Blackwood to such contemporaries as Ramsey Campbell, Stephen King, and Clive Barker. In this generous sampling of the reviews that Joshi has written in nearly thirty years as a critic, we find trenchant analyses of writers ranging from Arthur Machen, E. F. Benson, and Shirley Jackson to Peter Straub, Thomas Ligotti, Norman Partridge, and David J. Schow. Joshi also addresses such significant themes in horror fiction as the subgenre of dark suspense, the haunted house, Arkham House and its legacy, and the work of the small press. Of particular note is a lengthy section devoted to H. P. Lovecraft, including studies of an array of Cthulhu Mythos writings and detailed examinations of recent Lovecraft scholarship. Joshi’s essays and reviews are enlivened with a pungent wit and literary flair that bring to mind the work of John Clute and Brian Aldiss. The Unknown Lovecraft by Kenneth W. Faig, Jr. December 2008: ISBN 978-0-9814888-7-5: $20.00 Kenneth W. Faig, Jr. is well known to Lovecraftians as one of the pioneers, along with Dirk Mosig, Richard L. Tierney and others, of modern Lovecraftian scholarship. The author of Some Lovecraft Places in Providence (1971), H. P. Lovecraft: His Life, His Work (1979), Lovecraft's Ancestors (1988), The Parents of Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1990) and other works, Faig has also disseminated his research as a perennial contributor to journals and amateur press associations, and through his own Moshassuck Press. This long overdue collection gathers all of Faig's best pieces on HPL. The Lady Who Came to Stay by R. E Spencer & The Elixir of Life by Arthur Ransome February 2009: ISBN 978-0-9814888-9-9: $15.00 Once again, our Lovecraft's Library series reprints two obscure horror novels favored by H. P. Lovecraft for their "darkly excellent effects." Reprinted for the first time, in an attractive format reminiscent of the Ace doubles of an earlier era, both novels feature authoritative texts derived from original sources, along with informative introductions by S. T. Joshi. Visit our website for a special offer on Hippocampus Doubles: six novels for $40.00. Blood Will Have Its Season by Joseph S. Pulver, Sr., author of Nightmare's Disciple Introduction by S. T. Joshi Illustrated by S. Thomas Brown and Stanley C. Sargent March 2009: ISBN 978-0-9814888-8-2: $15.00 "In an earlier day I feel sure Joe Pulver would have been arrested for writing some of the stuff in this collection. Maybe he will be yet! In any case, I cannot shake the feeling that his stories are all well described by analogy to "The Colour out of Space" in that the descent of some elder, outer entity acts as seed producing, from the dark mulch of Joe's subconscious, a luxurious growth of beautiful and at the same time poisonous blooms. One knows one ought to flee but cannot resist hanging around to savor the corruption! And how can he write, with such intricate delicacy, thunderous prose that fairly rips up the pages it is printed on? I wish I knew!” --Robert M. Price The Tindalos Cycle Edited by Robert M. Price Illustrated by Robert H, Knox April 2009: ISBN 978-0-9814888-5-1: $20.00 When Frank Belknap Long first alerted the world to the those infamous other-dimensional entities, The Hounds of Tindalos, he mined a rich vein of macabre antecedents, whose devisers included Robert W. Chambers, Ambrose Bierce and others. Since Belknap's time, others have distilled and fortified his prophetic vision, affording the Hounds ongoing ingress to our dimension as a mainstay of the Mythos. Now, the steady hand of editor Robert M. Price gathers all the relevant Tindalos writings in one mind-blasting tome, tracing the Hounds' lineage from the dawn of the weird tale through their first explicit revelation, to the modern day with its full flowering. In 2009, prepare for... The Tindalos Cycle. The Hound Hunters by Adam Niswander April 2009: ISBN 978-0-9814888-4-4: $20.00 Now, a modern master of the Mythos reveals the Hounds of Tindalos in their own novel, set in the modern day! The Hound Hunters tells the tale of a designer drug whose potent admixture is capable of opening the door to another dimension, admitting those horrific Hounds. The novel, published here for the first time, is the latest in Adam Niswander's Shaman Cycle. Each novel stands alone; however, in the best Lovecraftian tradition all are loosely connected. Out of Tragedy, a Hero Is Reborn… In the roaring heart of the crucible, steel is made. In the raging flame of personal tragedy, men are sometimes forged into something more than human. Once he was just a man, but now he is a machine of vengeance dedicated to the extermination of all crime. A figure of ice and steel, but more pitiless than both, Benson has become a symbol to crooks and killers--a terrible, almost impersonal force, masking cold genius and a nearly supernatural power behind a face as white and still as a dead man’s mask. Only pale eyes, like ice in a polar dawn, hint at what awaits criminals when they invoke the rage of millionaire adventurer Richard Benson -- The Avenger! Now, for the first time in over 30 years, the fearless/expressionless crime fighter; the man with the moldable face, the man with the shock white hair and the pale grey eyes, is back in action in a stunning collection of stories featuring all the action, adventure, and revenge Avenger fans have come to expect! Planetary
Stories and Pulp Spirit - Holiday Issue now available! Here at Planetary Stories and Pulp Spirit, we like to think that Oct. 31 opens the holliday season. At the very least it marks the point each year when we publically admit we're in a festive mood. And to make it official, we're putting online a combined issue of Planetary Stories and Pulp Spirit to kick things off. This is in addition to our regular issue, due out New Year's Eve. In it you'll find Ron Butler's "A Visit from St. Rex," which marks the beginning of what we hope is a long association between Planetary Stories and Ron's beloved "Rory Rammer" space adventure series. On the Pulp Spirit side, everybody's favorite thirties private eyes, Cathy and Nora Casey -- aka the Diamondville Dolls -- go undercover in a department store during the Christmas Season as "Santa's Little Helpers." (Jack Manning gets to play Santa.) Wait until you see the great illustrations Mark Fults has done for this one. There's a scary Thanksgiving story by ShelVy, a Halloween yarn by newcomer Richard Logan, a couple of poems -- one for Halloween and one for Christmas. And PulpRack takes a timely look at Christmas stories in the pulps. Plus there's great holiday artwork and illustration by such modern masters as Ron Wilber, Roy Coker, Jim Garrison, Kevin Duncan, Mark Fults -- and another newcomer, the artist Paulette Perlman. It's a jam packed issue you can find at www.planetarystories.com, Just click on the Holiday 2008 Issue on the index page. And if you should check back around Thanksgiving and then again at Christmas, you might just find that we've added some more material.
Pulp Adventurecon
- Saturday, November 1, 2008! Since November 2000, Pulp Adventurecon has been the only show on the east coast devoted specifically to pulp fiction magazines, and their paperback descendants. For the first time, we’re attempting two great shows this year – March 29th and November 1st, 2008. Our first spring show was a success, with plenty of happy customers who entered the Ramada and remained with us for most of the day. As collector/dealer Rick Hall said, “There was BUZZ in the room.” People were buzzing over the latest selection of pulp reprint editions at Mike Chomko’s table; some were buzzing over the John Gunnison’s captivating Adventure House wall display. John brought several issues of Black Mask, the legendary pulp magazine that cultivated the careers of Raymond Chandler, Earl Stanley Gardner, and many others. If John had brought copies with Dashiell Hammett stories, right now I’d be in serious financial trouble. Rich Greene displayed an intriguing selection of original artwork, including Boris Vallejos’ painting for The Red Terrors, a Doc Savage paperback thriller. Dan Roberts brought several boxes of $1 paperbacks. I scoured through them and purchased some detective-hardboiled gems from the 1950s and 1960s. CJ Henderson chatted up several fans regarding his stories in new anthologies featuring The Domino Lady, The Spider, and The Avenger. His novel “To Battle Beyond” unites the unlikely trio of The Black Bat, The Domino Lady, and Inspector Lagrasse against the Cthulhu menace. Our next show will be NOVEMBER 1, 2008 at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206, Bordentown, NJ. Past attendees can attest to the convenience of this location –immediately off the New Jersey Turnpike, Exit 7, when you take the Route 206 north ramp, heading toward Trenton. The Ramada is less than 500 feet from the ramp. We’ll have the usual 50 tables with something for everyone … the only thing missing is YOU … Collectors and dealers come from as far away as Virginia and New Hampshire. If you love the old pulp fiction, and live within a few hours of the Trenton, New Jersey area, there is simply no reason not to attend. PULP ADVENTURECON Saturday, November 1, 2008 Ramada Inn 1083 Route 206 Bordentown, NJ (Just off exit 7 of NJ Turnpike) Bold Venture Press

Pulp Adventurecon - Saturday, November 1, 2008! Underwood Books - Now available! --And Their Memory Was a Bitter Tree: Queen of the Black Coast and Others by Robert E Howard (Author), Arnie Fenner (Foreword), H. P. Lovecraft (Afterword) As one of the three most important American pulp fantasy authors of the 1930s (with Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith), Robert E. Howard captivated readers with his indomitable, battle-scarred barbarian hero Conan. Though Howard's life ended prematurely in 1936 at the age of 30, Conan lives on as one of the genre's most enduring icons. This beautifully designed collection contains nine essential Conan stories along with a full-length Conan novel. Sellers of pulp magazines, all-fiction digests, dime novels, and other collectible books and periodicals are already lining up for exhibit space, and the convention will be advertised and promoted extensively to capture the attention of new hobbyists as well as veteran attendees. Preliminary flyers carrying basic information are being distributed at various collectibles shows this fall, beginning with Bouchercon, the annual gathering for collectors of mystery fiction. The Pulpfest 2009 committee has already contacted several publications to inquire about advertising the convention, and additional flyers will be designed and distributed throughout the year. Additionally, the Pulpfest 2009 website is now operational and can be found at www.pulpcon.com. In the weeks and months to come, it will be updated regularly to provide new information on guests and programming as soon as it becomes available. Dealers interested in helping promote Pulpfest 2009 can download and print out either of two flyers already available on the website in PDF form. These can be distributed at collectibles shows and sent with mail-order shipments. Following an extensive search for the best available venue, the Pulpfest 2009 committee chose the Ramada Plaza for its spacious accommodations, numerous amenities, ease of access, and competitive pricing. The committee has negotiated a guest-room rate of $84 plus tax per night, significantly less than that offered by other pulp conventions. The Convention Center’s main room boasts more than 10,000 square feet of space and will accommodate up to 80 eight-foot tables. A separate room on the same floor will be set up theater-style for our evening programming. A con suite will be open for after-hours conversation and conviviality. Located just off Exit 116 of Interstate 71, the Ramada Plaza is just 20 minutes from Columbus International Airport and 10 minutes from downtown Columbus, making our convention site easily accessible to attendees whether they’re driving or flying. The Ramada offers complementary transportation via shuttle to and from the airport, downtown Columbus, and various other locations (including restaurants) within a five-mile radius of the hotel. The newly renovated hotel additionally offers all the usual amenities. High-speed wireless Internet access is now available in the main lobby, convention center, and guest rooms. Guests can avail themselves of a whirlpool, an exercise room, and both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a full-service business center. Parking is free for hotel guests and single-day convention attendees. The Ramada’s spacious restaurant, Justin’s Place, serves traditional American cuisine and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. The hotel’s cozy lounge, Bowties, is open until two a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The Ramada Plaza is an extremely popular venue for conventions of our type and size. For 15 years now it has hosted Cinevent, an annual confab of vintage-film fans and collectors of movie memorabilia. Hotel management is both committed to and experienced in providing the courteous, comprehensive service that produces satisfied conventioneers. Pricing schedules for dealer tables and registrations will be forthcoming shortly. Information on guests and programming will be posted here and on the Pulpfest 2009 website as soon as it is confirmed. Visit

The Way the Future Was - Now available! The Way the Future Was by Pierre Comtois Once upon a time, the year 2000 had held a fascination for young people of the 1950s and 60s as the point beyond which the future predicted by decades of science fiction writers would arrive. Unfortunately, that future never happened and what we ended up with has been the somewhat disappointing present. Luckily, however, our imaginations are as sharp and bright as they ever were so that we can continue to look forward to a superfuture made up of flying cars, monorails, moving sidewalks, and space liners heading to Ganymede. It is in keeping with those dreams that the stories in this collection were written hopefully to recapture the spirit of optimism young people had for the future at a time when World War II was not that far removed from living memory and American heroes were square jawed soldiers or God fearing scientists who were as comfortable in the cockpit of a jet as they were in a laboratory. So if you are one of those SF fans who are still looking to the future for personal spacecraft, ruined Martian cities, or high speed rail service on Venus, then look no farther than these fables of a time that may yet come to pass! He mentioned it to Lovecraft: “The legend is so hideous, that I would not be surprised if there were some mention of it in the Necronomicon. Will you verify this for me?” Not surprisingly, Smith’s instincts proved to be sound; Lovecraft reported: “Oh, yes — Abdul mentioned your ghoul, & told of other adventures of his.” Clark Ashton Smith made unique contributions to and understanding of the Cthulhu Mythos. In an exchange of letters with August Derleth after the death of their friend Lovecraft, Smith, the first Mythos buff, set forth a notorious theology of the Mythos, making the Old Ones evil foes of the blessed Elder Gods as well as elemental forces of earth, air, fire and water. It is fascinating how Smith’s original tale “The Ghoul,” turned out to be the mere tip of the iceberg for a larger tale, in effect, a kind of round robin to which he, Lovecraft, and Lin Carter would all contribute. by Clark Ashton Smith, edited by Robert Price. 224 pages. - Now available! SIMON BOLIVAR GRIMES, OUTLAW by E. Hoffmann Price He had a coffin-shaped face, and like the thoroughbred he rode, his legs were long; but while the horse was graceful as a panther, the rider was gangling, slightly stooped, and his oversized hands did not know what to do with themselves when he dismounted at the hitching rack in front of Squint Eye Morgan’s Sabine Palace, a dive so named because of its proximity to the river which separates Texas and Louisiana. A .45 single action Colt was awkwardly strapped to his thigh, and its owner looked as though he must have picked a lucky day for his very recent first shave, otherwise he would have cut his own throat; yet somehow, he did not stumble over the hand-hewn planks as he strode to the bar. Squint Eye Morgan winked broadly when the boy piped, “Whiskey, if yo’ please, suh.” Then, voice suddenly going bass, he boomed like a yearling bull, “I’m Simon Bolivar Grimes, suh, lookin’ fo’ my uncle’s ranch in Crockett County in the next day or two.” And that is our introduction to Simon Bolivar Grimes, E. Hoffmann Price's answer to Robert E. Howard's Breckenridge Elkins. While both Mountain Men were able to get themselves into a whole peck of trouble, Price's Grimes also had the ladies to take care of, in the Spicy manner! This collection of 13 stories include 11 from Spicy Western Stories, and one each from Speed Western Stories and Fighting Western. Each story is fully illustrated with the original pulp magazine's artwork. Softcover, 450 pages, $19.95 Pulpville Press

Airship 27:SECRET AGENT X-Volume II (Deluxe reprint edition.)
- Now available! Airship 27 Productions and Cornerstone Book Publishers are very happy to announce the release of our second collection of Secret Agent X stories first published two years ago. Since the first edition sold out, Airship 27 Productions was very anxious to get this book back in print; this time with a brand new story by B.C. Bell added to the reprinted gems penned by Sean Ellis, G.L.Gick and Kevin Noel Olson. All of which now paves the way for Airship 27 Productions to continue the series based on pulpdom’s first and greatest super spy, Secret Agent X, The Man of a Thousand Faces. Secret Agent X was published by Periodical House. It was launched by veteran pulp writer Paul Chadwick under the penname of Brant House in 1934 with the first adventure called The Torture Trust. Secret Agent X was a government funded anti-crime crusader. His real name and identity were never revealed during the curse of his 41 stories that ran until March of 1939. The character exhibited many similarities with other pulp heroes of the time such as The Shadow, The Green Lama and Operator 5. Although he would never reach their status in sales, Secret Agent X was the only real successful single-character title the company ever produced. Chadwick penned the first sixteen issues before moving on. There would be a total of 41 Secret Agent X stories published during the course of the hero’s run. “We are aware of Altus Press’s current project of reprinting the entire run of the original Secret Agent X adventures,” commented Ron Fortier, Airship 27 Productions co-founder and managing editor. “We’d like to think our books perfectly compliment those reprint volumes. Now pulp fans have more Secret Agent X stories to look forward to on a regular basis.” With the publication of this reprint edition, Airship 27 Productions is now gearing up to continue the series and hopes to have the all new Volume III out before the end of the year. Edited by Fortier (Captain Hazzard and the Ghost Squad), this reprint edition also contains twelve black and white illustrations by Rob Davis (Star Trek) and features a stunning cover by Davis and Chris Carney. SECRET AGENT X: VOLUME TWO “Secret Agent “X” and the Masterpiece of Vengeance” by Sean Ellis “Secret Agent “X” and Betty Dale: Gun Moll” by Kevin Noel Olson “Secret Agent “X” and The Plague Doctor ” by G.L. Hard Case Crime - Coming
in October and beyond! October 2008 THE FIRST QUARRY by Max Allan Collins, Cover art by Ken Laager Crime fiction readers know Quarry, the ruthless killer-for-hire, from Max Allan Collins’ acclaimed novels—most recently THE LAST QUARRY, which told the story of the assassin’s final assignment (and was the basis for the feature film The Last Lullaby). But where did Quarry’s story start? For the first time ever, the best-selling author of ROAD TO PERDITION takes us back to the beginning, revealing the never-before-told story of Quarry’s first job: infiltrating a college town and eliminating a professor whose affair with one of his beautiful, young students is the least of his sins... November 2008 GUN WORK by David J. Schow, Cover art by Joe DeVito Life isn't always cheap south of the border—some lives are worth a million dollars. That’s what the Mexican kidnapping cartel was demanding for Carl Ledbetter’s wife. So Carl reached out to the one person he knew with a chance in hell of saving her, a deadly man whose own life he’d saved in the sands of Iraq. It was time to call in some favors. Because some situations call for negotiation, but some...call for gun work. December 2008 FIFTY-TO-ONE by Charles Ardai, Cover art by Glen Orbik CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF HARD CASE CRIME! Okay, not really. But what if, instead of having been founded 50 books ago, Hard Case Crime had been founded 50 years ago, by a rascal out to make a quick buck off the popularity of pulp fiction? Such a fellow might make a few enemies—especially after publishing a supposed non-fiction account of a heist at a Mob-run nightclub, actually penned by an 18-year-old showgirl. With both the cops and the crooks after them, our heroes are about to learn that reading and writing pulp novels is a lot more fun than living them... |

Lester
Dent - Previously unpublished story to see print! Will Murray announced that he has sold an unpublished Lester Dent story to editor Otto Penzler for the forthcoming BLACK LIZARD BOOK OF BLACK MASK STORIES. Written for Joe Shaw in 1936, Dent was forced to revise this story again and again. The final version featured Oscar Sail and was called "Sail." While this version is roughly the same storyline, the hero is very, very different from the Oscar Sail we all know. Dent himself preferred this version, and so does Otto. Since Dent wrote only 2 Sail stories for BLACK MASK (a third "Cay" was abandoned when Shaw left the magazine) and they are often anthologized as among the magazine's best stories, this is an event. Look for "Luck" next year.

Pulp
Adventurecon - Saturday, November 1, 2008! Pulpcon - A "New and Improved" Pulpcon is in the works! Mike Chomko has announced that he, Jack Cullers, and Barry Traylor have decided to organize their own Pulpcon. From Mike's announcement: Jack, Barry, and I are currently investigating sites in Columbus, Ohio for a planned Pulpcon to be held in late July or early August 2009. We are also in discussions with interested parties who are considering holding an East Coast pulp and paper convention, most likely in November 2009. Whenever we hold the convention, we plan to publicize it and open it up to a wider array of material than has traditionally been allowed at Pulpcon. However, if we are to organize a successful convention, we will need your help. Please plan to support our convention in whatever month it is held. If you are a dealer and would be interested in selling at our show, please let us know as soon as possible. If you are interested in lending a hand, please drop us a line. More particulars will follow as our plans become better defined. If you'd like to be added
to the new Pulpcon mailing list, please send your name and address to:
Please be sure to include your email address if you have one. Thanks.
The Pulp Rack - New additions! After too, too long a hiatus from posting new info to The Pulp Rack, I've added a new entry. It's not too lengthy, but any extended fast -- whether from food, drink, or writing -- should be broken in a moderate manner. So, this little essay, "Delights in Pulp Prose," takes a look at a passage from a Theodore Roscoe short story that appeared in a 1929 issue of Argosy All-Story Weekly, "The Black Friar." You'll find the new post here, at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2008/09/delights_in_pul.html As always, thanks for your patronage. Pulpville Press
- Now available! THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF TOFFEE by Charles F. Myers Apparently paying homage to Thorne Smith and "Topper", Charles F. Myer (real name Charles H. Myers) wrote a series of stories starring Toffee, a dream girl in the strictest sense of the word: she resided in Marc Pillsworth's mind. She also existed in the real world whenever she could escape Marc's subconscious. The Toffee stories are pure fantasy, are fun to read, and are a bit mischievous and spicy. Myers went on, under the pen name of Henry Farrell, to write "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" and "What Ever Happened to Cousin Charlotte?", both made into hit motion pictures. All ten Toffee stories are contained in this volume and all of the original illustrations from the pulps and digest magazines where the stories first appeared are included. Softcover, 450 pages, $19.95 Pulpville Press |
