Sherlock
Holmes VARIETY reports that Jude Law is in negotiations to join Robert Downey Jr. in Warner Brothers' fresh take on "Sherlock Holmes." The reports states that Law is "close to a deal" to play useful sidekick Watson to Downey's Holmes in the Guy Ritchie-directed feature. Ritchie and Anthony Peckham's script is based on Lionel Wigram's upcoming comic book, which draws inspiration from Arthur Conan Doyle's classic character, but emphasizes the action-oriented side of Holmes' personality, particularly his vaunted skills as a boxer and a swordfighter. Warner Bros. will begin production on "Sherlock Holmes" next month in London. The studio appears to be comfortably ahead in the race against a Judd Apatow-produced Sherlock Holmes comedy set up at Columbia with Sacha Baron Cohen as Holmes and Will Ferrell as Watson. Several key roles in Ritchie's "Holmes" remain uncast, including main villain Blackwood.

CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #3 - Arriving in comic shops September 17th! Written by Timothy Truman, penciled by Tomas Giorello and Richard Corben, colored by Jose Villarrubia, cover by Frank Cho. A young Cimmerian huntress--a character seen in Conan Vol. 0: Born on the Battlefield--and Horsa--an Aesir leader from The Frost Giant's Daughter--both cross paths with Conan as he continues his dangerous trek through the snowy mountain passes of Cimmeria. Fighting his way through the natural dangers of his barbaric homeland has been a welcome change from the mind games and treachery Conan found in the cities of the East, but there's an unfortunate lesson in treachery in store for Conan here, too. In a Richard Corben flashback sequence, Connacht--Conan's grandfather--seems to have found a role for himself working in a busy city, but as the old saying goes, "Fleas will find a dog . . . and trouble will find a Cimmerian." 32 pages, $2.99, in stores on September 17. Doc Smith’s pulp sci-fi series from the 1930s, Lensman, to Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment. Rumors have floated as far back as January about Howard’s interest in the property, but Contardi confirmed that the deal has just closed after negotiations lagged for months. This volume contains some of the most ambitious adaptations of Conan material to date, reprinting the epic battle that leads to Conan becoming the king of Aquilonia in "Conan the Liberator," the sword-and-sorcery classic "Sword of Skelos," and the exhilarating "Conan and the Sorcerer." Collecting selections from The Savage Sword of Conan the Barbarian issues 49 through 60, this volume also includes the frontispieces and pinups from each issue, drawn by such amazing talent as Ernie Chan, Carl Potts, and Neal Adams! As a special bonus, you'll find a companion piece to Savage Sword Volume 1's "A Witch Shall Be Born" story -- that hasn't seen print since its original publication in 1980! For the first time ever, these classic, uncensored tales are being collected in a series of omnibus-style books, with over 500 pages of sword-and-sorcery adventure in each volume -- for the complete Conan collector! 544 pages, black and white, $17.95, in stores on February 18. Subterranean
Press: The Best of Robert E. Howard, Volume One: Crimson Shadows - Coming in February 2009! Illustrated by Jim and Ruth Keegan Limited: $150 Deluxe Limited: $400 The UK based small press Wandering Star issued glorious editions of Robert E. Howard’s work, including The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, The Ultimate Triumph, as well as two volumes of Howard’s Conan tales. Subterranean Press is proud to continue this series of limited editions, beginning with Kull: Exile of Atlantis, exquisitely illustrated with color plates and black and white illustrations illuminating the text. We now continue with our second offering, Crimson Shadows, The Best of Robert E. Howard, volume one. We plan to match or better the quality of materials used in the Wandering Star editions, and will be doing a number of other books in the series. Among the great pulp writers whose work continues to enthrall new generations of readers -- Edgar Rice Burroughs, H.P. Lovecraft, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler--few were as versatile as Robert E. Howard. Best known as the creator of Conan, Howard also wrote not only of other memorable fantasy characters, such as Puritan swordsman Solomon Kane and Pictish king Bran Mak Morn, but hundreds of stories of boxing, detection, westerns, horror, “weird menace,” desert adventure, lost race, historicals, “spicies”, even “true confessions.” To all of them he brought his gift for exciting, fast-paced action and a poetic economy of language. The two volumes in The Best of Robert E. Howard bring together the most outstanding of his tales, enabling both long-time fans and new readers alike to sample the varied repertoire of “the greatest pulp writer in the whole wide world.” Jim and Ruth Keegan are going to touch up a few of their black and white illustrations, and we've commissioned some brand new color art for the volume - though we don't yet know how it'll be used, for contractual reasons. We've also decided that the Best Of volumes will be the most limited yet (with only 750 limited edition copies and 50 deluxe copies) so get your order in early. Limited: 750 numbered copies, signed by the artists - $150 Lettered: 50 numbered leatherbound copies, signed by the artists - $400 Pre-orders can now be placed on the Subterranean Press website.

Williamson's Flash Gordon: A Lifelong Vision of the Heroic - Coming in January! Al Williamson’s Flash Gordon: A Lifelong Vision of the Heroic, collects all the major works of the artist featuring the character. At 256 pages, it encompasses Williamson’s three stints of depicting Flash in comic book format: the legendary King Comics stories from the 1960s, the 1980 adaptation of the Universal Flash Gordon motion picture, and the Marvel Comics miniseries of 1994. In addition to these classics of sequential storytelling, Al Williamson’s Flash Gordon features Williamson’s Flash drawings done for commercial illustration and prints, his assists on the Flash Gordon comic strip, a variety of Flash images contributed to amateur publications, and a selection of largely unpublished images spanning his interest in the character from childhood to the conclusion of his career. October 2008 THE FIRST QUARRY by Max Allan Collins, Cover art by Ken Laager Crime fiction readers know Quarry, the ruthless killer-for-hire, from Max Allan Collins’ acclaimed novels—most recently THE LAST QUARRY, which told the story of the assassin’s final assignment (and was the basis for the feature film The Last Lullaby). But where did Quarry’s story start? For the first time ever, the best-selling author of ROAD TO PERDITION takes us back to the beginning, revealing the never-before-told story of Quarry’s first job: infiltrating a college town and eliminating a professor whose affair with one of his beautiful, young students is the least of his sins... So Carl reached out to the one person he knew with a chance in hell of saving her, a deadly man whose own life he’d saved in the sands of Iraq. It was time to call in some favors. Because some situations call for negotiation, but some...call for gun work. December 2008 FIFTY-TO-ONE by Charles Ardai, Cover art by Glen Orbik CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF HARD CASE CRIME! Okay, not really. But what if, instead of having been founded 50 books ago, Hard Case Crime had been founded 50 years ago, by a rascal out to make a quick buck off the popularity of pulp fiction? Such a fellow might make a few enemies—especially after publishing a supposed non-fiction account of a heist at a Mob-run nightclub, actually penned by an 18-year-old showgirl. With both the cops and the crooks after them, our heroes are about to learn that reading and writing pulp novels is a lot more fun than living them...

McFarland - Now available! Buster Crabbe - A Biofilmography Jerry Vermilye Buster Crabbe. Mention his name, and chances are that there will be a question like “Buster Crabbe: Didn’t he play Tarzan?” Of course, Crabbe did portray that celebrated jungle hero, but he only did so once. This athlete-turned-actor went on to create a lengthy and successful career in several areas of show business. Crabbe’s chief claim to fame, aside from his Olympic gold medal (for the 400-meter freestyle event in 1932), rests in the trio of movie serials in which he played the popular science-fiction hero Flash Gordon. In fact, Crabbe was the only actor to play the roles of Tarzan, Flash Gordon, and Buck Rogers, the top three pulp action heroes of the 1930s. Crabbe carved out a career that would also include more than 100 B-movies and program Westerns, a TV adventure series, and a successful physical fitness enterprise. All of this and more is detailed in the work, which includes a complete filmography providing cast and crew information for each of his 103 feature films and serials. Adventurecon - Saturday, November 1, 2008! Since November 2000, Pulp Adventurecon has been the only show on the east coast devoted specifically to pulp fiction magazines, and their paperback descendants. For the first time, we’re attempting two great shows this year – March 29th and November 1st, 2008. Our first spring show was a success, with plenty of happy customers who entered the Ramada and remained with us for most of the day. As collector/dealer Rick Hall said, “There was BUZZ in the room.” People were buzzing over the latest selection of pulp reprint editions at Mike Chomko’s table; some were buzzing over the John Gunnison’s captivating Adventure House wall display. John brought several issues of Black Mask, the legendary pulp magazine that cultivated the careers of Raymond Chandler, Earl Stanley Gardner, and many others. If John had brought copies with Dashiell Hammett stories, right now I’d be in serious financial trouble. Rich Greene displayed an intriguing selection of original artwork, including Boris Vallejos’ painting for The Red Terrors, a Doc Savage paperback thriller. Dan Roberts brought several boxes of $1 paperbacks. I scoured through them and purchased some detective-hardboiled gems from the 1950s and 1960s. CJ Henderson chatted up several fans regarding his stories in new anthologies featuring The Domino Lady, The Spider, and The Avenger. His novel “To Battle Beyond” unites the unlikely trio of The Black Bat, The Domino Lady, and Inspector Lagrasse against the Cthulhu menace. Our next show will be NOVEMBER 1, 2008 at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206, Bordentown, NJ. Past attendees can attest to the convenience of this location –immediately off the New Jersey Turnpike, Exit 7, when you take the Route 206 north ramp, heading toward Trenton. The Ramada is less than 500 feet from the ramp. We’ll have the usual 50 tables with something for everyone … the only thing missing is YOU … Collectors and dealers come from as far away as Virginia and New Hampshire. If you love the old pulp fiction, and live within a few hours of the Trenton, New Jersey area, there is simply no reason not to attend. Tarzan
- New feature film in the works! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stephen Sommers is in negotiations to co-write and direct the Warner Bros. take on "Tarzan." Warner Bros. had originally attached Guillermo Del Toro to its adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs classic, but Del Toro is otherwise occupied with "The Hobbit." Sommers will co-write the "Tarzan" script with Stuart Beattie. Reportedly, the duo doesn't plan to stick to Burroughs' novel. An entirely new approach is in the works, though more details beyond that are being kept under wraps. Jerry Weintraub is producing through his Jerry Weintraub Prods.
