Cornerstone Books: WEIRD
HORROR TALES - Coming in 2009! Let’s get graphic. “Weird Horror Tales” just got really weird. It was announced today that legendary artist Earl Geier is illustrating the upcoming book by author Michael Vance. Published in early 2009, “Weird Horror Tales” will be an homage to pulp magazines from the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s like “Horror Stories” and “Weird Tales”. "Michael Vance offers up thirteen tales of Lovecraftian horror with a deft sense of suspense and heart-pumping terror,” said Ron Fortier, editor of the title. "Earl Geier's art for these stories is as stark and brutal as a cold knife's edge. His grasp of horror is second to none, and he delivers nightmarish scenes with incredible, horrific feelings. He is the perfect partner for Vance's terror tales." These stories about the fictional town of “Light's End” in Maine have been published in dozens of magazines, and have also been recorded by renowned actor William (“Murder She Wrote”) Windom. “My stories are based on the belief that there is something larger than our narrow view of reality,” said Vance. “Each story shares setting, history, prominent families, and a macro plot. It encompasses the Azrealites who work tirelessly to reinstate Earl Geier that Other back on Earth through science and the occult.” Earl Geier, admitting he was “born, raised and died in Chicago where he still lives today with some cats and dogs”, is best known for his horror, fantasy and science fiction artwork. In the role playing game industry, his work includes art for “Battletech”, “Mechwarrior”, “Shadowrun”, “Earthdawn”, “Call of Cthulhu” and “Elric”, “Dungeons and Dragons”, “Fantasy Flight”, “Dark Conspiracy”, and many others. He has illustrated books for “Cemetery Dance” magazine, Chaosium, Gryphon and Subterranean Press. For comic book, he's had work published by Dark Horse Comics, Comiczone, Now, Innovation and DC Comics Paradox. Vance has written for national and international magazines, and as a syndicated columnist and cartoonist in over 500 newspapers. His history book, “Forbidden Adventures”, has been called a "benchmark in comics history”. He briefly ghosted an internationally syndicated comic strip, wrote his own strip and several comic books. He is listed in the Who's Who of American Comic Books and Comic Book Superstars. The publisher of “Weird Horror Tales”, Cornerstone Books also publishes Masonic and esoteric books, selected pulp fiction, art literature, limited children's books, and poetry collections. For more information about Cornerstone, go to http://www.cornerstonepublishers.com. Airship 27 packages and publishes anthologies and novels in the pulp magazine tradition. In the past, Airship 27 has released “Witchfire”, a series of “Captain Hazzard” pulp thrillers, more pulp fiction in “Brother Bones” and “Secret Agent X” and the WWII/SF thriller “The Light of Men”. Pulp
Adventurecon - Saturday, November 1, 2008! Since November 2000, Pulp Adventurecon has been the only show on the east coast devoted specifically to pulp fiction magazines, and their paperback descendants. For the first time, we’re attempting two great shows this year – March 29th and November 1st, 2008. Our first spring show was a success, with plenty of happy customers who entered the Ramada and remained with us for most of the day. As collector/dealer Rick Hall said, “There was BUZZ in the room.” People were buzzing over the latest selection of pulp reprint editions at Mike Chomko’s table; some were buzzing over the John Gunnison’s captivating Adventure House wall display. John brought several issues of Black Mask, the legendary pulp magazine that cultivated the careers of Raymond Chandler, Earl Stanley Gardner, and many others. If John had brought copies with Dashiell Hammett stories, right now I’d be in serious financial trouble. Rich Greene displayed an intriguing selection of original artwork, including Boris Vallejos’ painting for The Red Terrors, a Doc Savage paperback thriller. Dan Roberts brought several boxes of $1 paperbacks. I scoured through them and purchased some detective-hardboiled gems from the 1950s and 1960s. CJ Henderson chatted up several fans regarding his stories in new anthologies featuring The Domino Lady, The Spider, and The Avenger. His novel “To Battle Beyond” unites the unlikely trio of The Black Bat, The Domino Lady, and Inspector Lagrasse against the Cthulhu menace. Our next show will be NOVEMBER 1, 2008 at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206, Bordentown, NJ. Past attendees can attest to the convenience of this location –immediately off the New Jersey Turnpike, Exit 7, when you take the Route 206 north ramp, heading toward Trenton. The Ramada is less than 500 feet from the ramp. We’ll have the usual 50 tables with something for everyone … the only thing missing is YOU … Collectors and dealers come from as far away as Virginia and New Hampshire. If you love the old pulp fiction, and live within a few hours of the Trenton, New Jersey area, there is simply no reason not to attend. GUNS
OF THE BLACK GHOST - Now available! GUNS OF THE BLACK GHOST “A Pulp Thriller” by Tom Johnson ISBN #978-0-6152-1171-8 Trained by a retired secret agent of the government, Jimmy Malone dons a black hood and cape sending fear into the hearts of evildoers, as he battles the underworld in the tradition of a modern day Shadow or Spider. Burning eyes, a mocking laugh, and blazing automatics announce his entrance into an affray. Gangsters cringe when they come up against the guns of the Black Ghost! The vast chamber was suddenly filled with a mocking laugh as the Black Ghost issued his challenge to gangdom, and the weird mirth rose to a high crescendo, reverberating throughout the building, echoing like a wild thing in the silent void of space. Gang members suddenly stopped what they were doing, and looked about the shop like hunted animals on opening season in the woods. And then a chorus of shouts rang out as they spotted the intrepid fighter in black. “The Black Ghost!” burst from a dozen lips at once, and murderous hands dug for guns beneath their tunics. Gunfire suddenly blazed as those weapons came up, but the Black Ghost had drawn two heavy automatics of his own, and the machine shop was thundering with the clash of guns as a battle began between gangland and the fighter in black. A wild volley of bullets sang like angry hornets disturbed by a farmer’s deadly spray of insecticide. This is my tribute to Walter Gibson and his creation, The Shadow, and is now available from NTD. The book is just under 300 pages for $16.50. http://www.bloodredshadows.com/newNTDbooks.htm

Vanguard Productions: THE PAINTINGS OF
J. ALLEN ST. JOHN - Now available! Vanguard's second volume devoted to the work of J. Allen St. John concentrates on the artist's full-color fantasy, science-fiction and adventure paintings for novels and Pulp-magazines for famous authors, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jack Williamson, Robert E. Howard and more. St. John is the original grand master illustrator of Tarzan, John Carter of Mars (now in major motion picture development by Pixar), and others. His illustrations inspired generations of later fantastic artists including Roy G. Krenkel, Jeffrey Jones and Frank Frazetta. St. John will always be recognized as the first, and most important illustrator of Burroughs' writings and this book is produced with the full endorsement and cooperation of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. Also featured are essays by renowned science-fiction author Jack Williamson; Danton Burroughs, Lin Carter, and illustrators Vincent Di Fate, and Frank Frazetta. St. John began his career by studying the old master in the museums of Paris around 1880. Returning to America, his notoriety among Fine Art enthusiasts developed with recognition from the Society of American Artists and Metropolitan magazine in 1889. The artist went on to become a professor of drawing and painting at both The American Academy of Art and the Chicago Art Institute, but his greatest notoriety came as he ventured into the colorful world of Pulp magazine and adventure book illustration. For the readers of fantasy, science fiction and adventure, St. John surpassed the work of his famous contemporaries Frank Schoonover, James Montgomery Flagg, and N. C. Fenham Publishing: The Loved
Dead and Other Tales by C.M. Eddy, Jr. - Now available! This second collection of C.M. Eddy's works highlights seven of his Weird Tales Magazine creations, together with a variety of other lesser known tales. Story headings from four of these tales are reproduced from the original artwork by Andrew Bronsnatch, an artist whose illustrations were showcased on fifteen Weird Tales covers. The stories range from Mr. Eddy's first nationally published fiction, "Sign of the Dragon", a detective mystery story to "The Loved Dead", perhaps his most infamous story. This horrific tale of the exploits of a tortured soul's dark descent into unspeakable deeds against his fellow citizens, is told from the protagonist's point of view. C.M. Eddy's most prolific period of short story writing was during the years 1919 through 1922 - the time the majority of this collection was produced. The original handwritten manuscripts were used for the texts while editing this book. These thirteen tales show the diversity and range that C. M. Eddy, Jr. displayed as an author and storyteller.

Hippocampus Press - Now available! The Complete Poetry and Translations of Clark Ashton Smith Volume 1: The Abyss Triumphant Clark Ashton Smith was one of the most remarkable and distinctive American poets of the twentieth century. His tremendous output of poetry, totaling nearly 1000 original poems written over a span of more than fifty years, is of the highest craftsmanship and runs the gamut of subject matter from breathtaking “cosmic” verse about the stars and galaxies to plangent love poetry to pungent satire to delicate imitations of Japanese haiku. This edition prints, for the first time, Smith’s entire poetic work, including hundreds of uncollected and unpublished poems. The poems have been arranged chronologically by date of writing, so far as can be ascertained. This first volume includes poetry from the first two to three decades of Smith’s career, when he published such noteworthy volumes as The Star-Treader (1912), Ebony and Crystal (1922), and Sandalwood (1925). Smith’s early work was written under the tutelage of the celebrated California poet George Sterling, but Smith quickly surpassed his mentor in the writing of cosmic and lyric verse. Smith’s greatest poetic triumph, perhaps, was The Hashish-Eater, a poem of nearly 600 lines that strikingly evokes the myriad suns of unbounded space and the baleful monsters that may lurk therein. But Smith could also write such touching elegies as “Requiescat in Pace,” a dirge for a woman whose death affected him deeply. Hardcover, $50.00 The Complete Poetry and Translations of Clark Ashton Smith Volume 2: The Wine of Summer This second volume of Clark Ashton Smith’s complete original poetry contains the poems he wrote in the decades following the death in 1926 of his early mentor, George Sterling. Although much affected by Sterling’s passing, Smith carried on in his poetic work, seeking new modes of expression and expanding his range beyond the cosmic and lyrical verse that had dominated his early career. Having taught himself French in the mid-1920s, Smith began composing original poems in French, also translating them into English or translating his earlier English poems into French. Although Smith wrote relatively little verse during the period of his extensive writing of fantastic fiction (1929–35), he resumed work in the later 1930s, especially under the influence of his friends Eric Barker and Madelynne Greene, for whom he wrote the poetic cycle entitled The Hill of Dionysus. In the late 1940s he experimented with imitations of Japanese haiku, and in the 1950s, having taught himself Spanish, he wrote numerous original poems in Spanish. Also among his later output are a number of witty satires on the vagaries of modern poetry. In its entirety, Clark Ashton Smith’s work stands as one of the great literary contributions to twentieth-century poetry. All poems have been textually corrected by consultation with manuscripts and early appearances, and have been extensively annotated by editors S. T. Joshi and David E. Schultz. This volume also contains an exhaustive commentary on all the poems and a complete title and first line index. Hardcover, $50.00

The writers said they've turned in a script for a four-hour Phantom movie that is waiting to be greenlit, with the hopes of an eventual series for Sci-Fi.
