AMERICAN
SUPERNATURAL TALES - Available in bookstores October 2nd! by S. T. Joshi (Editor) The ultimate collection of weird and frightening American fiction. As Stephen King will attest, the popularity of the occult in American literature has only grown since the days of Edgar Allan Poe. American Supernatural Tales celebrates the richness of this tradition with chilling contributions from some of the nation’s brightest literary lights, including Poe himself, H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Shirley Jackson, Ray Bradbury, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and—of course— Stephen King. By turns phantasmagoric, spectral, and demonic, this is a frighteningly good addition to Penguin Classics. This anthology includes "Old Garfield's Heart" by Robert E. Howard. Penguin Classics, 432 pages, $16
Clark Ashton Smith - "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" Update! In February of 1935, Clark Ashton Smith submitted three stories to WEIRD TALES. Editor Farnsworth Wright accepted all but "The Black Abbot of Puthuum," until the tale was drastically cut and rewritten. When the story finally appeared in the March, 1936 issue, it was 1500 words shorter, a pivotal character was excised from the tale, and the ending was completely different. The rejected manuscript lay buried in the collection of H. P. Lovecraft's executor Robert H. Barlow, and only now, more than seventy years later, is the story published as the author originally conceived it. Complementing the text is a tipped-in illustration reproduced from the original WEIRD TALES artwork of Virgil Finlay. The artwork--long thought lost--was located in the collection of a friend of Clark Ashton Smith's and has not been seen since its first appearance. The RAS Press was founded in 1961 by Roy A. Squires who produced beautiful booklets until 1987, when he printed his final book, his bibliography, The Private Press of Roy A. Squires. Under the guidance and expertise of Master Printer & designer Gerald Lange, Terence McVicker has revived the RAS Press in honor of that notable anniversary with its first publication in twenty years: "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" by Clark Ashton Smith. This digitally produced edition is limited to 250 numbered copies. The tipped-in reproduction of the illustration by Finlay was ink-jet printed by McVicker. The papers are Mohawk 50/10 Matte and Curtis Flannel. The cover was letter-pressed printed by Lange. The book sells for $49.95, but pre-publication subscribers are invited to take advantage of a 20% discounted price of $39.95 (plus 8.25% sales tax for California residents). "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" will debut at the 2007 World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga Springs, New York. Copies of the prospectus for "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" which shows the typefonts, the inking, and the quality of the printing is now ready for mailing. It is printed upon the paper that will be used for the edition. Gratis copies will be mailed to subscribers this week. A hardcopy of the Prospectus is free to anyone who requests one. Inquiries may be directed to Terence McVicker at mcrarebooks@earthlink.net Update: This book is forty-eight pages not counting the covers. The covers are soft-cover, letterpress printed, there is a reproduction of the Virgil Finlay artwork, and the book is handsewn. The book is roughly 4.5 x 8.5. Pre-publication price is $39.95 including shipping. Checks are preferred and should be made out to: Terence McVicker 1745 W. Kenneth Road Glendale, California 91201-1451 You can also pay via Paypal to the email address mcrarebooks@earthlink.net.
Clive
Cussler: THE CHASE - Coming November 6th! April 1950: The rusting hulk of a steam locomotive rises from the deep waters of a Montana lake. Inside is all that remains of three men who died forty-four years before. But it is not the engine or its grisly contents that interest the people watching nearby. It is what is about to come next . . . 1906: For two years, the western states of America have been suffering an extraordinary crime spree: a string of bank robberies by a single man who cold-bloodedly murders any and all witnesses and then vanishes without a trace. Fed up by the depredations of the "Butcher Bandit," the U.S. government brings in the best man they can find-a tall, lean, no-nonsense detective named Isaac Bell, who has caught thieves and killers coast to coast. But Bell has never had a challenge like this one. From Arizona to Colorado to the streets of San Francisco during its calamitous earthquake and fire, he pursues what is quickly becoming clear to him is the sharpest criminal mind he has ever encountered, and the woman who seems to hold the key to the bandit's identity. Using science, deduction, and intuition, Bell repeatedly draws near only to grasp at thin air, but at least he knows his pursuit is having an effect. Because his quarry is getting angry now, and has turned the chase back on him. The hunter has become the hunted. And soon it will take all of Isaac Bell's skills not merely to prevail . . . but to survive. Filled with intricate plotting, dazzling signature set pieces, and not one but two extraordinary villains, this is the work of a master writing at the height of his powers. THE PHENOMENON - Arriving
in comic shops October 3rd! Paul Sammon (W) and Frank Frazetta (Cover); Foreword by Michael Moorcock This in-depth tour through the history of fantasy’s greatest hero covers everything from the earliest prose, to Frazetta’s explosive artwork, through the Schwarzenegger film, and into the recent rebirth of the character as a leading comic-book hero. Since his first appearance in a 1932 pulp magazine, Conan the Barbarian has enjoyed every success available to a fictional character. Robert E. Howard created the genre of sword and sorcery with his original stories; Frank Frazetta’s definitive Conan book covers set the standard for dynamic fantasy artwork; Roy Thomas, with Barry Smith and later John Buscema, used the character to push the boundaries of comic-book adventure; and Arnold Schwarzenegger launched his amazing film career. Now, with the character’s popularity renewed thanks to the award-winning comics series, all of these eras of Conan are examined under one cover in this lavishly illustrated book. Conan historian Paul Sammon looks at all the stages of the character’s development, with commentary and archival material from the most integral players in that history. The definitive guide to everything Conan! TALES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT [MIGNOLA
COVER EDITION] - Now available! edited by Joyce Carol Oates Combining the nineteenth-century gothic sensibility of Edgar Allan Poe with a daring internal vision, Lovecraft's tales foretold a psychically troubled century to come. Lovecraft's universe is a frightening shadow world where reality and nightmare intertwine, and redemption can come only from below. Now, at last, the most important tales of this distinctive American genius are gathered in one volume by National Book Award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates. A collection of ten prototypical stories by Lovecraft, the influential myth-and monster-maker of Providence, Rhode Island, whose extravagantly gothic tales have spawned and inspired such latterday disciples as Stephen King and Ramsey Campbell. It's ingenuous for Ecco to claim that "Now, at last'' we have a representative Lovecraft (considering all that several publishers have done over the years to keep even his ephemera in print). Still, here are some of his best, including such comparatively little-known triumphs as a harrowing depiction of a surrender to madness ("The Dreams in the Witch-House'') and a superb haunted-house tale ("The Shunned House''). Oates's brief, incisive introduction suggestively compares Lovecraft's experiences and temperament with those of his mentor Poe, and helpfully summarizes the content of the former's apparently immortal "Chthulu Mythos.'' One misses only Lovecraft's hair-raising novella "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.'' But even without it this attractive volume offers a fine chance to sample Lovecraft's ghoulish pleasures. Softcover, 6x9, 160 pages, $14.95 HarperCollins Publishers

Clark Ashton Smith
- "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" In February of 1935, Clark Ashton Smith submitted three stories to WEIRD TALES. The book sells for $49.95, but pre-publication subscribers are invited to take advantage of a 20% discounted price of 39.95 (plus 8.25% sales tax for California residents). CONAN THE PHENOMENON - Coming October
10th! Robert E. Howard Foundation - THE LAST OF THE TRUNK is now available for pre-order! THE LAST OF THE TRUNK
should ship in November. Robert E. Howard
generated an enormous volume of written works, around 3.5 million words. In his
tiny room in his house in Cross Plains, REH kept a trunk to hold all his output
that was still awaiting a sale, as well as works that were rejected, unfinished,
something he especially wanted to save, or simply copies of early drafts that
he would reuse the back of in typing up another story. At the time of his death,
that trunk held literally tens of thousands of pages of material, all hand-typed
by REH.In the early 1960s, Glenn Lord obtained the contents of REH's trunk. He had the duty, pleasure, and challenge of sorting it all out, and to begin sheparding those works into print. Hundreds of stories and poems poured forth, to see print in assorted books, magazines, and fan publications. Ever since the publication of Glenn Lord's THE LAST CELT in 1976, collectors of the works of REH have been aware of, but unable to read, more than a hundred unpublished stories and fragments. A few were published in the intervening years, but not many. Finally, in this volume, THE LAST OF THE TRUNK is being revealed. Virtually all the remaining unpublished prose will be included. While this certainly is not his most memorable or impressive work (those works are already in print), it does fill in lots of blank spaces for the scholars and collectors, and perhaps yield a little more understanding of one of the greatest pulp writers. This will be the largest REHF publication to date, at 672 pages. Hardback with dust jacket by Tom Foster. Edited and with an introduction by Patrice Louinet. Design by Dennis McHaney. Many of the works are incomplete or unfinished. Many of the complete stories are either boxing or high school papers. Ordering and payment information Some of the content in these letters could be considered adult in nature and inappropriate for children. Hence, the Robert E. Howard Foundation requires that each purchaser certify that they are at least 18 years of age. The price will be $53 for REHF members, $59 for non-members. Shipping rates PER VOLUME. Bob Weinberg: THE SCIENCE OF STEPHEN KING -
Now available! THE SCIENCE OF STEPHEN KING by Bob Weinberg and Lois Gresh is now available! THE SCIENCE OF STEPHEN KING appeals to both the scientist and the long-time reader of Stephen King in me. Weinberg and Gresh use concepts from King's fiction as launching pads for in-depth explorations of concepts as diverse as ESP, pyrokinesis, time travel, artificial intelligence, quantum chemistry, alternate realities, string theory, and the possibility that we'll be visited by aliens or that we'll face a global pandemic. In a style reminiscent of science populists like Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov, they present challenging concepts in clear, easy-to-grasp language. If you've ever read Stephen King's works and asked yourself what's real and what could be real, you might be surprised by the answers Weinberg and Gresh provide. As they so cleverly explain, much of what Stephen King writes about in his novels is closer to reality than you might think."--Bev Vincent, Ph.D., author of The Road to the Dark Tower A superb overview of King's use of scientific concepts in his stories. And considering all the scary talk lately about pandemic flu, their chapter on The Stand is timely as hell. --Stephen Spignesi, author of The Complete Stephen King Encyclopedia, The Lost Work of Stephen King and The Essential Stephen King. Just as Sagan and Asimov popularized science to the masses by making it entertaining and informative, so too do Weinberg and Gresh in this book as they boldly go to explore every nook and cranny in the Stephen King universe. Compulsively readable and thought-provoking. --George Beahm, author of The Stephen King Companion, Stephen King: America s Best-Loved Boogeyman, and Stephen King from A to Z. Trade paperback, 288 pages, Wiley

Jones 4 - Movie title finally announced! It has been announced that the title of the upcoming installment in the Indiana Jones franchise will be "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." The well-guarded plot of the fourth film is being kept under lock and key, but Karen Allen's addition to the lineup has sparked speculation that Shia LaBeouf will play her and Ford's son, who presumably has been long lost to the intrepid archaeologist. Other rumors include the John Hurt taking over as Indy's father; Jim Broadbent playing a bumbling yet useful sidekick à la Denholm Elliot's Professor Marcus Brody; and Kate Capshaw, returning as Willie Scott. The film has been slated for a May 22, 2008, release. Cameras started rolling in June.

Wildside Press: THE RETURN
OF THE NIGHT WIND - Gone to press! Wildside Press reports that THE
RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND has gone to press THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND by Varick Vanardyand should be available in about two weeks! Written by the “father of [serial detective] Nick Carter,” Frederic Van Rensselaer Dey, and published by the man who introduced the “pulp” magazine to the world, Frank A. Munsey, the Night Wind was a super-endowed character whose fictional life-span ran from 1913 to the early 1920s. Bingham Harvard, alias the Night Wind, used his prodigious strength (roughly 5 times that of the average man) to rescue himself, friends and family from various plots of “frame-ups,” extortion and outright physical violence. His exploits were serialized in Munsey’s THE CAVALIER and ALL-STORY WEEKLY just a few months after the appearance of Tarzan in October 1912 and wrapping up just before the first appearance of Zorro on August 1919 by the same publisher. Upon the close of a pulp magazine serial, the installments were bound and reissued in hardcover format. There were a total of four hardcover novels starring the Night Wind: ALIAS “THE NIGHT WIND,” THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND, THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE, and LADY OF THE NIGHT WIND. In 1923 the first novel was adapted for the silent screen and released with much popular appeal as ALIAS “THE NIGHT WIND.” After almost 100 years out of print, ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND was re-released by Wildside Press in March 2007. Now the sequel: THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND will soon see reprint. Re-typeset - but not revised or abridged in any way, this edition comes with an informative introduction by Peter Coogan, author of “Superhero: The Secret Origin of a Genre” (MonkeyBrain Books, 2006) placing the Night Wind in context with the entire superhero genre. In addition, the hardbound and paperback formats of this book sport the color cover from the original, first appearance of THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND in THE CAVALIER magazine from October 4, 1913. ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND is available now from Barnes & Noble.com, Amazon.com and Diesel eBooks in hardcover, paperback and ebook formats Hardcover, 256 pages, $29.95 Trade paperback, 252 pages, $14.95 THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND will soon be available from the same retailers, in the same formats, at the same noted prices. Stay tuned for the pending release of the next two Night Wind titles from the original series and a new, exciting fifth installment with a foreword by Win Scott Eckert and cover and interior illustrations by Mark Maddox... | Cover for ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND Original Pulp Cover for the first installment of THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND

Park Ave Hunt Club: The Silver Creek Edition
- Now available! From Jess Nevin's THE PULP HEROES website: The Park Avenue Hunt Club was created by Judson Philips and appeared in Detective Fiction Weekly in the mid-1930s. The Club was a group of black mask clad dilettantes, gentlemen of leisure, who independently distributed their own variety of "justice," which was inevitably lethal. The leader of the Hunt Club was Geoffrey Saville, a former intelligence officer for the U.S. government in World War. Saville became a sportsman and world traveler after the war, returning to the US to begin dealing out bloody justice. He was tall and thin, resembling Ronald Colman; under fire he was cold and fearless, and had a “strange sixth sense” when the plot called for it. The second member of the Hunt Club was John Jericho, a former big game hunter who loved and craved action. A mammoth man, 6’5” and muscular, he had curly red hair and was a lethal shot with his right hand. The third member of the Hunt Club was Arthur Hallam, the brains of the group. Hallam was a former medical student and psychiatrist. He was very intelligent and planned the group’s strategies. The fourth and final member of the group was Wu, a Chinese who worked as chauffeur, valet, cook, and general batman to them. He was small and expressionless, but very loyal to the other members of the Hunt Club. He was only an average shot but was deadly with the knife (he kept one in a neck sheath). The Hunt Club worked out of New York City, where they had a number of offices from which they operated. They used a powerful “low black Phaeton” and an armored limousine. The Pulp Rack - New additions! Today's post is a follow up to "Mountains of Madness: 1931" -- "At the Mountains of Madness: 2001." Edgar Poe’s Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym initially presents itself as a true account of an actual sea voyage, and H.P. Lovecraft attempts to ground “At the Mountains of Madness” in the real world with a seemingly realistic account of an expedition to the Transantarctic Mountains. Mountains of Madness, by John Long, flips the card by being an actual account of fossil-hunting fieldwork in those mountains. Today's post looks at Long's book from the eye of a pulp fan interested in Lovecraft's story. The essay is an addition to our "Jules Verne: Pre-Pulp Pioneer Extraordinaire" page at http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/04/jules_verne_pre_1.html , under the "Adventure category at The Pulp Rack, at http://pulprack.com/arch/adventure_pulps/index.html. You can read it at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/09/at_the_mountain.html Meanwhile, speaking of adventure, you can drop a few pennies in The Pulp Rack's pocket by purchasing "Set the Seas on Fire," a recent novel by Chris Roberson, publisher of the anthology ADVENTURE! from his Monkey Brain Books. As the blurb at Amazon notes, "Roberson adds a pulpy twist to Napoleonic-era naval adventure as the crew of a damaged English frigate finds both paradise and hell on a pair of uncharted Pacific islands. First Lt. Hieronymus Bonaventure, last seen in Paragaea (2006)," (a updating of the traditional scientific romance) is the hero of this tale.
