Blood ‘n’ Thunder #18 (Summer 2007) - Hot
off the presses! Blood ‘n’ Thunder #18 (Summer 2007) is hot off the presses and will make its debut at this year’s Pulpcon. Our feature article is a career study of the unjustly neglected Neil Martin, whose adventurous early life produced many colorful experiences from which to draw when he began writing for pulps in the late Twenties. Selling regularly to such magazines as Top-Notch, Sea Stories, Five Novels Monthly, and his most steady market, Short Stories, Martin penned thrilling adventure and mystery yarns saturated with atmosphere. Regular BnT contributor Rex W. Layton concludes his series on L. Ron Hubbard with his magnum opus, a comprehensive survey (covering nine genres) of what he believes to be Hubbard’s best work. A companion piece to Rex’s article covers the unusual feud that resulted in Hubbard’s literary “murder” of a popular character created for John W. Campbell’s legendary Unknown by L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt. Finally, this issue’s “Series Spotlight” is trained on Anthony Boucher’s famous detective hero, Fergus O’Breen, originally created for a series of hardcover mysteries but later a periodic presence in the pulps. Subscribers attending Pulpcon are urged to pick up their copies at the Blood ‘n’ Thunder table in the dealers’ room. Other subscriber copies will be mailed out immediately after the convention. As always, single copies are available for $6.00 plus $1.50 for shipping. Please send payment to: Ed Hulse, 2467 Route 10 East, Bldg. 15, Apt. 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950. http://www.geocities.com/poppub/
Conan Feature Film - Update! New Line Looking to Take Over Conan Source: Variety, June 28, 2007 Weeks after Warner Bros. lost the rights to Conan the Barbarian, New Line has moved into prime position to make a movie based on Robert E. Howard's mythical conqueror, reports Variety. After posting a bid of mid-six against seven figures for an 18-month option with one extension, the studio entered into negotiations after CAA staged an auction for rights holder Paradox Entertainment. The property drew the interest of several studios and monied producers including Hollywood Gang's Gianni Nunnari and Millennium Films. Strong interest in Conan was attributed to the strong showing of the macho sandal saga "300." Several potential buyers blinked at an initial asking price of $1 million for a year option, with another $1 million for each year's renewal. Studios are sensitive to ticking clock options, particularly when potential writers and actors strikes next year has them putting their resources into films that can be completed before next June. Reinventing Conan didn't come easy for WB, which spent the last seven years trying for a film that veered from the testosterone-laced beefcake fests that launched Arnold Schwarzenegger to something more reverential toward Howard's original pulp novels. Larry and Andy Wachowski, John Milius (who directed the original and wrote the script with Oliver Stone) and Robert Rodriguez took turns developing it. Rodriguez got closest but left the project for Grindhouse. Boaz Yakin was hired last year to start again. If New Line makes the deal, the studio will have to start from scratch, as Warners owns the various drafts it developed.

James Rollins: THE JUDAS STRAIN - Available in bookstores July 3rd! From the depths of the Indian Ocean, a horrific plague has arisen to devastate humankind--a disease that's unknown, unstoppable...and deadly. But it is merely a harbinger of the doom that is to follow. Aboard a cruise liner transformed into a makeshift hospital, Dr. Lisa Cummings and Monk Kokkalis--operatives of the shadowy covert organization SIGMA Force--search for answers to the bizarre affliction that has inexplicably washed ashore. But there are others with far less altruistic intentions. In a savage and sudden coup, terrorists hijack the vessel, turning a mercy ship into a floating bio-weapons lab. At a Fourth of July celebration a world away, SIGMA's Commander Gray Pierce thwarts the murderous schemes of a beautiful assassin--a would-be killer who holds the first clue to the discovery of a possible cure. With the fate of every man, woman, and child on Earth hanging in the balance, Pierce joins forces with the woman who wanted him dead, and together they embark upon an astonishing quest--one that winds through Venetian tombs, Byzantine cathedrals, and jungle-encrusted ruins, following the trail of the most fabled explorer in history: Marco Polo. But time is an enemy as a worldwide pandemic grows rapidly out of control. And as a relentless madman dogs their every step, Gray and his unlikely ally are being pulled into an astonishing mystery buried deep in antiquity and in humanity's genetic code. And as the seconds tick closer to doomsday, Gray Pierce will realize he can truly trust no one--not the bewitching enigma who runs at his side or even those who are closest to him--for any one of them could be...a Judas. PULPCON
36 - July 5-8, 2007 PULPCON 36 will be held July 5-8, 2006 at the Dayton Convention Center in Dayton, Ohio. PulpCon is pleased, and proud, to announce the Guests of Honor for PulpCon 36. Glenn Lord By way of celebrating the 100th anniversary of Robert E. Howard (2006) and the anniversary of the publication of the first Conan story in WEIRD TALES, Mr. Glenn Lord has accepted our invitation to attend PulpCon 36 as a Guest of Honor. Mr. Lord was instrumental in the revival of Conan and Howard's other characters. Following are just a few other facts gleaned from the internet and individuals concerning Glenn: "For nearly half a century he has been championing Howard and his work, from his landmark publication of the first REH poetry collection, ALWAYS COMES EVENING (Arkham House, 1959) and his legendary REH fanzine, THE HOWARD COLLECTOR (1960-1972), through over thirty years as the literary agent for the owners of Howard's works, to his current involvement in working with the editors of the Wandering Star/Del Rey and Wildside Press Howard books, and the forthcoming updating of his monumental bio-bibliography, THE LAST CELT (Donald M. Grant, 1976), Glenn has befriended, assisted, advised, and mentored two generations of REH fans, scholars, and editors. There is much more but I think you can see why we are honored to have him as a Guest of Honor. David Saunders In honor of celebrating the 100th birthday of noted pulp artist Norman Saunders, David Saunders has also accepted our invitation to be a Guest of Honor at PulpCon 36. David will present a slide show of almost all of Norman's original pulp work and give a brief description of his life and work. He will also talk about his "obsessive process of researching biographical information on pulp artists". I am sure most of you have read some of his work in ILLUSTRATION magazine and other periodicals. In his own words David describes his latest project: "I have just finished my latest biographical essay on the pulp artist ALLEN ANDERSON, who was actually the artist I knew best, since he was my father's lifelong best friend, so this latest essay has been a meaningful sentimental experience to let other people who enjoy his work know what a sweet person he was". (David would also like to speak with anyone who might own any of Anderson's original artwork. If you know of anyone contact me and I will forward the information to him). Previous works by David include biographical articles and checklists on artists such as Ernest Chiriacka, John W. Scott, Rafael DeSoto, and, of course, Norman Saunders. David has been a good friend of PulpCon's and we look forward to having him as a Guest of Honor. Visit the Pulpcon website for complete registration details and a tentative schedule of events.
The Pulp Rack - New additions! We continue with our Talbot Mundy theme today with this posting of a short story by that writer, "The Lady and the Lord." Georges Dodds, who maintains the R.U.R.itaninan Muglug web site -- where you'll find a number of electronic texts (including the Talbot Mundy story, "The Soul of a Regiment") -- provides this Mundy story about Kitty Crothers, the first of about half a dozen tales about this character. Many thanks to Georges! This story, originally appearing in the June 1911 issue of All-Story Magazine, is quite different from the exotic action tales that Mundy wrote for Adventure and Argosy. Still, it has elements of the club story, in which some adventurer or explorer recounts a thrilling tale in the smoking room of a gentlemen's club; and from the escapades Kitty relates, one can see how Mundy drew on his own rascally experiences as a sometime confidence man to lend verisimilitude to his protagonist's tale. You'll find this story at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/06/the_lady_and_th.html Today's Put a Penny in the Pulp Rack's Pocket spiel: Check out Wildside Press' edition of "Jimgrim and the Seventeen Thieves of El-Kalil" at Amazon.com. CONAN: RED NAILS animated feature
- Update! CONAN:RED NAILS, the very first animated feature film starring the greatest character in fantasy literature. Steve Gold, Writer/Producer, plans to blog at least once every two weeks, with a goal of twenty blogs over the next forty weeks, as they complete the film. Visit the Conan:RED NAILS website at http://www.conanrednails.com/ From the blog: From the very beginning of this project, our goal has been to bring you a CONAN that is consistent with the passion, style and attitude embodied by Robert E. Howard's prose. You will see an R rated RED NAILS . There will also be a mass-market PG-13 cut and an UNRATED DIRECTOR'S CUT . What you can expect in every cut is amazing art, an epic story and great performances. The entire voice cast was amazing! RON PERLMAN IS CONAN - - The Cimmerian came to life as Ron spoke. If you get anything out of this blog, I want you have a sense of the joy and wonder, the total rush we all felt in that recording studio as Ron yelled, growled and roared. His CONAN was powerful, gritty, tough, smart, nasty and heroic. Everything you'd expect him to be. Thank you Ron, you're the best. And he'll be CONAN for years to come! Ron had great chemistry working with Cree Summer, who plays VALERIA . She brought an amazing power and smoldering sexiness to the role. She was magnificent. Just listening, you knew CONAN and VALERIA were in the room and they were dangerous. Not to be messed with. Ready to draw steel... This was also MARG HELGENBERGER'S first major voice work in animation. She was wonderful and wicked as Tascela! We were very lucky to get her. I think most of you have seen JAMES MARSDEN as "Cyclops" in one of the X-Men Films. After working with him, seeing him create a character, roll on the ground with fear and laughter, I can tell you this: The man is a magician, he chews scenery! His performance fits with Ron's perfectly. You can feel the friendship and camaraderie between CONAN and TECHOTL . I could spend an entire blog just writing about MARK HAMILL . The man is a legend and rightfully so. Hearing Mark perform Howard, as Howard was written , is something I can't wait for all of you to hear. We grabbed Mark for several roles and he dominates one of the film's most tragic moments. I don't want to spoil anything, so that's all I'll say about this, for now. And last, but far from least, CLANCY BROWN was extraordinary as OLMEC . Clancy is a real professional and also a legend in the genre. He brings an amazing insight and wild, chameleon-like skills to his voice work. As good as he is as OLMEC , he did another voice for the picture that still gives me chills. Any discussion of the actors' performances demands commendation for SUE BLU , the film's brilliant voice director. She is uniquely gifted and skilled at this work. Actors trust her and always come through for her. Vic Dal Chele, the director of RED NAILS, has worked with Sue on various productions, but none were more challenging. We all had a great experience collaborating and conquering the many linguistic issues Hyboria presents. Lir an Mannanan Mac Lir! Tlazitlans, etc... I chose to focus this first blog on the film's voice talent for a number of reasons: 1. Everyone loves stars. 2. They were all flat out GREAT!!! 3. YOU get to hear them soon... We are in the process of putting up onsite some film audio files so you can hear RON PERLMAN curse in Cimmerian! And you can also expect new posts with STORYBOARD ART & previously unseen DEVELOPMENT SKETCHES. Hope you enjoyed REDBLOG ONE. Visit the Conan:RED NAILS website at http://www.conanrednails.com/

Dashing Diamond Dick and Other Classic
Dime Novels - In bookstores

Randolph Cox Dime novels —as fundamentally American as baseball and jazz—were an inexpensive and inexhaustible source of popular entertainment for millions of Americans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The five novels in this unique anthology are classic examples of the form, which encompassed Westerns, early science fiction, detective and mystery yarns, and Revolutionary War historicals. From the handsome gambler "Dashing Diamond Dick" and the daring inventor in "Over the Andes with Frank Reade, Jr., in His New Air-Ship" to the mythic baseball player in "Frank Merriwell’s Finish," here are some of the most valiant heroes and notorious rogues in the pantheon. Recognition for Hippocampus Press titles. *THE FREEDOM OF FANTASTIC THINGS, edited by Scott Connors, has been nominated for the International Horror Guild (IHG) Award for Nonfiction. *SHADOW COAST by Philip Haldeman received a starred review in Publisher's Weekly 4/23/06. 3. News. *We have found some copies of the first edition of Clark Ashton Smith's THE BLACK DIAMONDS which are signed by editor S. T. Joshi and illustrator Jason C. Eckhardt. The missing pages are still available as a free download at our site. *In recent months we have accomplished the release of the initial volume of the CAS Complete Poetry, as well as the hardcover COLLECTED ESSAYS Volume 5. More recently still, two additional items are newly available. *After having overcome a bottleneck in our production line, we can announce our forthcoming titles, including the hotly anticipated Lovecraft/Derleth letters! 4. Recently released. *Starred Review in Publisher's Weekly 4/23/07! SHADOW COAST - A novel by Philip Haldeman ISBN-13: 978-0-9771734-7-1 2007: 256 pp: $15.00 Barely surviving a spectacular yachting accident, Mark Sayres finds himself in a remote area of the Olympic Peninsula coast in Washington State. He has come to look for his wife, Maggie, who has been troubled by a disturbing discovery at the archeological site where she is working. After recovering at the home of Sandra Torrel, whose mysterious husband bears a disturbing family secret, Mark learns of a succession of terrifying events in the little town of Neah Bay that seem connected with the nearby excavation. Why are archeologists Paul Radwick and Ken Matsamura so secretive about what may have been unearthed? . . . In this chilling novel, Philip Haldeman evokes the rugged seacoast, eerie rainforests, small-town confines, and human interrelationships of a remote corner of the Pacific Northwest, all within a ghostly tale of horror that brings to mind the best work of H. P. Lovecraft and Algernon Blackwood. *New book in the Lovecraft's Library series: AN EXCHANGE OF SOULS by Barry Pain / LAZARUS by Henri Béraud Each with an Introduction by S. T. Joshi ISBN-13: 978-0-9771734-4-0 2007: 220 pp: $15.00 Barry Pain's An Exchange of Souls (1911) deals fascinatingly with a scientist who fashions a machine for exchanging his personality with that of another—but when he "exchanges souls" with his fiancée, only horror is the result. The novel unquestionably influenced Lovecraft's own tale of personality exchange across gender lines, "The Thing on the Doorstep." Henri Béraud's Lazarus (1924) is an even more obscure work, and yet its account of a man who, in an accident, loses his memory and for sixteen years adopts an entirely different personality makes one think immediately of Lovecraft's "The Shadow out of Time," where exactly the same idea is used. This edition is the first in a series of Lovecraft's Library titles reminiscent of the old "Ace Doubles." After reading the first novel, one flips the book over to read the second one! We have even retained the characteristic blue and white spine layout, and are presenting these volumes in a special digest size. *First issue now available: DEAD RECKONINGS - A Review Magazine for the Horror Field Edited by S. T. Joshi and Jack Madison Haringa No. 1 (Spring 2007): 100 pp Single Issue Price: $7.50 Please visit our website for the table of contents for No. 1. 5. Forthcoming titles. WARNINGS TO THE CURIOUS: A Sheaf of Criticism on M. R. James Edited by S. T. Joshi and Rosemary Pardoe ISBN-13: 978-0-9771734-8-8 July 2007: 340 pp: $20.00 British writer Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) is the most influential author of ghost stories in literary history, but his work has not received the attention it deserves. Warnings to the Curious, the first volume on James to be devoted entirely to his ghostly fiction, features a wealth of material old and new about the scholarly author and his supernatural writing. Please visit our website for the table of contents. LAIR OF THE DREAMER: A Cthulhu Mythos Omnibus By Franklyn Searight With an Introduction by Robert M. Price, and Illustrations by Robert H. Knox ISBN-13: 978-0-9793806-0-0 July 2007: 306 pp: $20.00 Frank Searight is the son of Richard F. Searight, Weird Tales author and correspondent of H. P. Lovecraft. The elder Searight invented the evocative Eltdown Shards for use in stories like his "The Sealed Casket" and "The Warder of Knowledge." Lovecraft borrowed the book title and employed it in his own stories. And though the elder Searight made no great effort to carry on the Mythos tradition of Lovecraft, the younger Searight does. Many enthusiasts of the Cthulhu Mythos have been delighted to discover a story of Frank's included in a magazine or an anthology here and there since the mid-seventies. Thus it is a great treat and a privilege for us to be able to draw all his Innsmouth Stories together, along with an unpublished Mythos novel, LAIR OPF THE DREAMER, for a long-overdue single-author collection. Also included here is the father-son posthumous collaboration, "The Mists of Death." W. PAUL COOK: The Wandering Life of a Yankee Printer, with Selected Writings Edited By Sean Donnelly ISBN-13: 978-0-9771734-6-4 August 2007: pp: $15.00 W. Paul Cook is remembered most often as a friend of H. P. Lovecraft; and so he has lingered posthumously in the shadow of his famous friend. He labored with love for half a century as a printer, publisher, editor, and author; the pleasure of the work itself was often the only reward for his labors. The purpose of this book is to place Cook in his own light; to illuminate his own talents as a writer of fiction, essays, and poetry; as a publisher and printer; and as a sincere exponent of amateur journalism. We will re-open the door, as best we can, to understand and appreciate the life of a modest man who styled himself an ordinary printer, but whom friends called "the Colossus of the North" and a "sterling patron of weird literature." LOVECRAFT ANNUAL New Scholarship on H. P. Lovecraft Edited by S. T. Joshi No. 1 (August 2007): 160 pp Single Issue Price: $15.00 Please visit our website for the table of contents for No. 1. SANCTITY AND SIN: The Collected Poetry and Prose-Poems of Donald Wandrei Edited by S. T. Joshi With illustrations by Howard Wandrei April 2007: $15.00 ISBN-13: 978-0-9771734-9-5 Donald Wandrei (1908-1987) is perhaps best remembered as an author of imperishable weird tales; as a co-founder with August Derleth of Arkham House; and as a friend and protégé of H. P. Lovecraft. But from an early age he also showed himself to be a superb and sensitive poet. As his centennial year approaches, we are proud to announce this exciting project. This new edition will collect all the poems which appeared in previous collections of his poetry, together with recently discovered works in both verse and prose-poetry. As an added bonus, illustrations by his brother Howard Wandrei for many of the poems are reproduced, some for the first time. We will also be making Phillip A. Ellis's remarkable concordance of Donald Wandrei's poetry available as a free download, and in a special hardcover format for libraries and institutions. THE LETTERS OF H. P. The Pulp Rack - New additions! This week's -- rather, last week's -- update to The Pulp Rack is now available: "The Ice Sphinx: Verne’s Sequel to Poe’s Arthur Gordon Pym" by Brian Taves. This essay was written by Brian as an introduction to The Ice Sphinx, published by Wildside Press as An Antarctic Mystery Or, the Sphinx of the Ice Fields: A Sequel to Edgar Allan Poe's the Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym in 2005. The Wildside edition is a reprint of the 1899 English translation by Mrs. Cashel Hoey published in Philadelphia by J.B. Lippincott Co. Many thanks to Brian for sharing this piece, which you'll find at this URL: http://www.pulprack.com You can purchase the Wildside edition at Amazon.com and drop a penny or two in the Pulp Rack's pocket by using the following link: http://www.amazon.com/Antarctic-Mystery-Sphinx-Ice-Fields/dp/1557423458/ref=sr_1_2/pulprack-20 This post is provided thanks to Georges Dodds, who maintains the R.U.R.itaninan Muglug web site. Today's post is a newspaper clipping from a 1919 issue of the NEW YORK TIMES, which relates basics about Talbot Mundy's suit against a film corporation regarding rights to two of his stories that appeared in ADVENTURE, one of which is KING, OF THE KHYBER RIFLES. You'll find the posting at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/06/talbot_mundy_su.html A check of Amazon shows no DVDs available of the film versions of KING, which is unfortunate. One stars Victor McLaglen and Myrna Loy and was directed by John Ford, the other stars Tyrone Power, Terry Moore and Michael Rennie, and was directed by Henry King. It's Put A Penny in the Pulp Rack's Pocket Time: Age of Aces Books, run by pals of The Pulp Rack Chris and Dave Kalb and Bill Mann, have released their second collection of stories from DARE-DEVIL ACES, the first volume of books collecting Robert J. Hogan's stories about The Red Falcon -- "The Red Falcon: The Dare-Devil Aces Years Volume 1." It's available now from Amazon. To pitch a penny the Pulp Rack's way, purchase it (or any other Amazon) after clicking this link to take you to the book's page, and many thanks: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Falcon-Dare-Devil-Aces-Years/dp/0979409217/ref=sr_1_1/pulprack-20 As always, thanks for your patronage. Press: THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND - Available late June
or July, 2007! THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND by Varick Vanardy Written by the “father of [serial detective] Nick Carter,” Frederic Van Rensselaer Dey, and published by the man who introduced the “pulp” magazine to the world, Frank A. Munsey, the Night Wind was a super-endowed character whose fictional life-span ran from 1913 to the early 1920s. Bingham Harvard, alias the Night Wind, used his prodigious strength (roughly 5 times that of the average man) to rescue himself, friends and family from various plots of “frame-ups,” extortion and outright physical violence. His exploits were serialized in Munsey’s THE CAVALIER and ALL-STORY WEEKLY just a few months after the appearance of Tarzan in October 1912 and wrapping up just before the first appearance of Zorro on August 1919 by the same publisher. Upon the close of a pulp magazine serial, the installments were bound and reissued in hardcover format. There were a total of four hardcover novels starring the Night Wind: ALIAS “THE NIGHT WIND,” THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND, THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE, and LADY OF THE NIGHT WIND. In 1923 the first novel was adapted for the silent screen and released with much popular appeal as ALIAS “THE NIGHT WIND.” After almost 100 years out of print, ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND was re-released by Wildside Press in March 2007. Now the sequel: THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND will soon see reprint. Re-typeset - but not revised or abridged in any way, this edition comes with an informative introduction by Peter Coogan, author of “Superhero: The Secret Origin of a Genre” (MonkeyBrain Books, 2006) placing the Night Wind in context with the entire superhero genre. In addition, the hardbound and paperback formats of this book sport the color cover from the original, first appearance of THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND in THE CAVALIER magazine from October 4, 1913. ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND is available now from Barnes & Noble.com, Amazon.com and Diesel eBooks in hardcover, paperback and ebook formats Hardcover, 256 pages, $29.95 Trade paperback, 252 pages, $14.95 THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND will soon be available from the same retailers, in the same formats, at the same noted prices. Stay tuned for the pending release of the next two Night Wind titles from the original series and a new, exciting fifth installment with a foreword by Win Scott Eckert and cover and interior illustrations by Mark Maddox... | Cover for

Unjustly wanted for a firing squad on his own side of the lines and facing death from the Germans on the other! A man abandoned by his own country, but still willing to die for it! Along with his aide, the great African warrior Sika, The Red Falcon fights WWI on his own terms. Flying the blood-red crate they built themselves from parts of crashed planes, they are the strangest pair on the Front. And the most deadly. Before Signal Corp pilot and airplane demonstrator Robert J. Hogan created G-8 AND HIS BATTLE ACES, he created The Red Falcon which ran for five years in DARE-DEVIL ACES before moving to G-8. Here is the premiere volume of his exploits collected for the first time, including the first Red Falcon-G8 crossover,"Dynamite Cargo"! Stories in Volume 1: "The Red Falcon," "The Bat Squad," "The Masked Drome," "Hurricane Buzzard," "Midnight Staffel," "The Death Squadron," "The Hooded Squadron," and "Dynamite Cargo." Still available: CAPTAIN BABYFACE: THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES by acclaimed hard-boiled writer Steve Fisher. These ten tales tell the story of Captain Jed Garrett, of the US Special Agent Corps, and his struggle to defeat the evil German genius, Mr.Death. Garrett, known as Captain Babyface because of his youthful appearance, is assisted by his dog, Click the hellhound. Together, they try to foil Mr. Death's bloodthirsty schemes, which threaten defeat for the Allies in WWI. For Jed Garrett, his orders are simple: Kill Mr. Death! But who is Mr. Death? One of Germany's brightest chemists and inventors, he had grown weary of life and entered a monastery near Alsace-Lorraine. But war came and the monastery was bombed. Severely injured, German surgeons patched him back together, though he was left horribly disfigured. And now, sworn to vengeance against the Americans, he uses his evil genius for Germany in the “War to End All War.” Author Steve Fisher is best known for his hardboiled work in BLACK MASK MAGAZINE and in novels like “I Wake Up Screaming”. In Popular Publications long-running aviation pulp DARE-DEVIL ACES, he created the ten titanic tales of Captain Babyface. For the first time, they are presented together in one volume. This is the first in a series from Age of Aces Books that will feature some of the greatest aviation pulp heroes of the 1930's. CAPTAIN BABYFACE: THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES was designed by the great Chris Kalb and features Frederick Blakeslee's original illustrations. It is 230 pages and is now available on Amazon.com for $16.99.

"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow Knows!" The Knight
of Darkness returns in two of Walter Gibson's most extraordinary pulp thrillers.
First, two legendary crimefighting agencies join forces when The Shadow teams
with England's legendary Scotland Yard to investigate The London Crimes and the
master criminal known as The Harvester. Then, The Shadow journeys to a strange
Castle of Doom, where murder lurks behind its battlements. Mystery and intrigue
abound in this thrilling tale of lost treasure, secret underground passages and
ghostly apparitions. In honor of The Shadow's first British adventure, popular
culture historian Anthony Tollin chronicles the 1930s and 1950s English pulp reprints
and the 1940s Australian Shadow radio series. This classic pulp reprint
also showcases George Rozen's dazzling pulp covers and all the original interior
art by acclaimed illustrator Tom Lovell. Coming later this month! THE SHADOW Volume 8: "The London Crimes" & "Castle of Doom"

Books - Now available! PULP WRITER, a memoir by Paul S. Powers with biographical essays by his granddaughter, Laurie Powers. Powers wrote under at least eight pseudonyms, published hundreds of short stories and novellas in pulp magazines, and lived a life at times as outrageous as his fiction. PULP WRITER tells of Paul S. Powers’s travels from serious literary ambitions to the pages of WILD WEST WEEKLY, of his seeking his fortune (or material, at any rate) in the ghost towns and mining camps of Colorado, and of his life in Arizona and California as he reaped the rewards of his wildly successful WILD WEST WEEKLY characters such as Sonny Tabor and Kid Wolf. Extending from the Great Depression to the golden age of the pulps, Powers’s career, chronicled here in often laugh-out-loud style, is an American success story of true grit and commercial savvy and of a larger-than-life character with questionable but endlessly entertaining Western lore to spare. In the process, he provides a valuable and rarely-chronicled look at the business of writing and publishing pulp fiction during its golden years. Powers’s granddaughter Laurie never knew her grandfather and lost touch with his side of the family. In her biographical essays, she finds her lost family and discovers the Pulp Writer manuscript. Her essays also provide a valuable historical context for pulp publications such as WILD WEST WEEKLY and their importance during the Great Depression. Paul S. Powers (1905–71) was a writer of pulp westerns for twenty years and the author of Doc Dillahay, published by Macmillan in 1949. During his life he earned a reputation as an expert in western Americana and rare books. Laurie Powers a writer, editor, and book collector, has a degree in American studies and wrote the introduction to the reprint of Paul S. Powers’s "Desert Justice."

La
Plata Doc Con - Stories wanted for new anthology! "Tales from La Plata" "La Plata Adventures" "Two-Fisted La Plata Tales" "Savage Tales of La Plata, Missouri" Mark Lambert is going to publish a trade paperback book of (mostly) action-adventure short stories, to be revealed at the La Plata Doc Con this October. He is looking for short stories that feature either La Plata, or Lester and/or Norma Dent. The stories can be any length up to 6,000 words. No minimum word count (so, yes, short-short stories are perfectly acceptable). Here are the rules: 1. DEADLINE: August 15, 2007. 2. FORMAT: Send by e-mail only, please. The story can be in the Best Word Processing Software Ever, WordPerfect, or in its evil clone, MS Word. Send to: hidalgo@mchsi.com. 3. The stories must either take place in or around La Plata, Missouri or have La Plata play some sort of key role. Or, the stories can feature Lester and/or Norma Dent in some fashion (e.g., you might write a story about Lester having an adventure on the Albatross in the Florida Keys; that's fine, just make sure La Plata gets a brief mention in the story). Stories can take place in any time period – current or past, prehistoric or future if you wish! 4. Nothing either mildly dirty or outright obscene or anythingin between. No sex scenes. I certainly have nothing against stories that contain such things, but they don't fit in this collection. Keep it clean, please. "Damn" or "hell" are okay for characters swearing, but nothing stronger. 5. Payment will be one copy of the book and one dollar (so you can honestly say you got paid for your story! For those of you who have never been paid for a story, here's your chance!). No additional payment based upon sales of the book (hey, I'm likely to lose money on this anyway! This is a labor of love kind of thing). 6. No use of others' copyrighted material or trademarked characters. So, no, you can't write about Monk & Ham getting stranded in La Plata and wrapped up in a mystery. Being a lawyer and a judge, I prefer to avoid litigation against myself, and therefore I wish to avoid pastiches about Doc Savage or related characters. Also, please do not include real people (from La Plata or elsewhere) in your stories (except for Lester and/or Norma Dent, that is). 7. For every story chosen for publication, the author will have to sign a simple agreement that I prepare stating that they understand they will get paid one copy of the book and one dollar, that all works are completely original, and that you hold me harmless from any copyright or trademark infringement claims or any other lawsuit regarding your story. (Sorry, I'm not willing to be held liable for other people's copyright or trademark infringements, advertent or in-). Other than the publication in this book, you retain all the rights to your story. 8. Mark Lambert will be solely responsible for deciding which stories go into the collection. Decisions may be made because of space considerations, or other valid reasons, or pure arbitrary whim, the mood I'm in, the phase of the moon, or any other reason, from sublime to ridiculous!! :-) Seriously, if it meets the guidelines, is half-way decent, and we have space, you'll likely see it in print. 9. Action-adventure stories preferred, but not absolutely required. Other genres will be considered, too. Again, August 15, 2007 is the deadline, to give Mark plenty of time to pull the book together before October 20. If you are planning to submit a story, need to send Marcan e-mail soon to let him know. Again, send to hidalgo@mchsi.com (that's MCHSI.com, as in Monk Called Ham Sartorially Ignorant). That way he can check with you as I get close to the deadline.
Michael
Moorcock's Elric - Coming to the big screen! Empire Online reported that Chris Weitz will move from The Golden Compass to Michael Moorcock's Elric, with his brother, Paul. The Weitz brothers will adapt the fantasy saga, about Elric of Melniboné (aka Elric Kinslayer or The White Wolf) for the big screen, the site reported. "Of the great classic fantasy series, it's the one that hasn't been done yet," Chris Weitz told Empire Online. "My brother, Paul, and I liked those books growing up, and we've met Michael Moorcock, and he trusts us to take those books forward." The Weitz brothers' Depth of Field production company will develop the adaptation, although no director is yet attached. "I'd really like it if my brother directed them," Chris said.

The
Pulp Rack - New additions! This thrilling headline appeared in a New York newspaper in 1909. Our thanks to Georges Dodds for today's posting to The Pulp Rack -- Dodds, who maintains the R.U.R.itaninan Muglug web site -- where you'll find a number of electronic texts (including the Talbot Mundy story, "The Soul of a Regiment") -- dug up the following newspaper stories about Talbot Mundy, which appeared soon after his arrival in New York. These columns of type provide a look at Mundy's life while he was still something of a rascal, before he settled down to being a popular author of adventure fiction. You'll find the articles here: http://www.pulprack.com This posting ties in nicely with our Put A Penny in The Pulp Rack's Pocket clarion for the week: Amazon.com offers Mundy scholar Brian Taves' recent volume, "Talbot Mundy, Philosopher of Adventure: A Critical Biography." Purchase that book, or any other item at Amazon during the same session there after clicking the following link, and you'll drop some shekels in our coffers for supporting the Pulp Rack, for which we thank you. F. Paul Wilson: BLOODLINE -
To begin shipping June 1st! F. Paul Wilson's 11th Repairman Jack novel, Bloodline starts off simply (as it always does)... Jack has been on hiatus since the events in Harbingers. With Gia’s encouragement he dips his toe back into the fix-it pool. Christy Pickering’s 18-year-old daughter is dating Jerry Bethlehem, a man twice her age. Christy sensed something shady and sinister about him, so she hired a private investigator to look into his past. But the P-I isn’t returning her calls. Will Jack find out why? Jack learns there’s a very good reason for the unreturned calls: The P-I is dead, a victim of a bizarre water-torture murder. As Jack delves into Jerry Bethlehem’s past he learns that the man is not who he says he is. Who—and what—he is will have a devastating effect on Jack’s life and future, adding another piece to the puzzle of who Jack really is and why he’s been drafted into this cosmic shadow war. The Numbered edition of Bloodline will have a cover price of $66 (Gauntlet Press customers pay $60), and $20 for the slipcase. The 26-copy Lettered edition will be priced at $200. For those ordering only through Gauntlet you will receive the chapbook, Bloodline: An Outline. It's the outline F. Paul Wilson wrote for Bloodline, providing a unique opportunity to see what the author was planning for the book. Visit the Gauntlet website to order. Hippocampus Press - Now available! The Complete Poetry and Translations of Clark Ashton Smith Volume 3 In addition to being a prolific and innovative poet in his own right, Clark Ashton Smith was a noted translator of French and Spanish poetry. Teaching himself French in the mid-1920s, Smith undertook the ambitious program of translating the entirety of Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil) into English. Over the next several years he succeeded in translating all but six of the 157 poems that comprised the definitive (1868) edition of Les Fleurs du mal. Smith would begin with a relatively literal prose translation and would later render it into verse; in the end, Smith versified about a third of the poems, the rest remaining in prose. His mentor George Sterling testified to the remarkable spiritual affinity between Smith and Baudelaire, rendering him the perfect translator of this difficult poet. Smith also translated other noteworthy French poets-Paul Verlaine, Victor Hugo, Alfred de Musset, and Théophile Gautier, among others-as well as such obscure poets as Marie Dauguet and Tristan Klingsor. In the 1940s Smith taught himself Spanish, making splendid verse translations of such poets as Amado Nervo, Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, and and Jorge Isaacs. The great majority of the poems included in this volume are unpublished. The current edition presents, for the first time, Smith's complete translations in French and Spanish, also printing the French and Spanish texts on facing pages. All texts are annotated by S. T. Joshi and David E. Schultz. Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) is a towering figure in American poetry and in the literature of fantasy and horror. Born and raised in California, Smith early fell under the tutelage of George Sterling, and later established friendships with H. P. Lovecraft, August Derleth, Benjamin de Casseres, and other leading figures. His tales of exotic fantasy have achieved a worldwide audience, while his meticulously crafted poetry, published here in a complete edition for the first time, will establish him as a leading poetic voice in his time. S. T. Joshi is a leading authority on H. P. Lovecraft, Lord Dunsany, and other writers of fantasy and horror. He is the author of The Weird Tale (1990) and H. P. Lovecraft: A Life (1996) and the coeditor of World Supernatural Literature: An Encyclopedia. He has edited Smith's juvenile novel, The Black Diamonds, for Hippocampus Press. David E. Schultz is a pioneering scholar on H. P. Lovecraft. He is the editor of Lovecraft's Commonplace Book (1987) and the coeditor (with S. T. Joshi) of Smith's The Last Oblivion: Best Fantastic Poems (2003) and The Shadow of the Unattained: The Letters of George Sterling and Clark Ashton Smith (2005). This week, with many thanks to pulp enthusiast and researcher Al Tonik, we offer a listing of Tepperman's publications. This bibliography nicely complements Victor Berch's two-part "The Tepperman Quest," which chronicles Victor's efforts to track down the pulp writer who worked on The Spider, Secret Agent X, The Avenger, and more. You can find "Emile Tepperman: A Bibliography" at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/05/emile_c_tepperm.html Put a Penny in the Pulp Rack's Pocket spiel: Because Emile Tepperman wrote several of the entries in The Spider series, today's recommendation is THE SPIDER CHRONICLES, an anthology of new stories featuring the Master of Men.

And then they discovered a tenth planet -- a maverick! This tenth world, if it had an orbit, had a strange one, for it was heading inwards from interstellar space, heading close to the Earth-Mars spaceways, upsetting astronautic calculations and raising turmoil on the two inhabited worlds. But even so none suspected then just how much trouble this new world would make. For it was WANDL THE INVADER and it was no barren planetoid. It was a manned world, manned by minds and monsters and traveling into our system with a purpose beyond that of astronomical accident!
