ASTONISHING ADVENTURES! MAGAZINE - New ePulp quarterly magazine!
ASTONISHING ADVENTURES! MAGAZINE is a new ePulp quarterly magazine distributed for free.
We at AAM love the old pulps like the Shadow, the Spider, the Operator, Doc Savage, and any of the hundreds of other characters you could name. This was the main reason we started Astonishing in the first place, but we have other reasons in mind also. We want to see what the thriving pulp community out there has to say and what they have to show us.AAM is looking for new fiction based on original pulp-styled characters. The word count can be anything under 3500, but we are open to review anything with a higher word count. Query us first before sending material.

AAM is also looking for articles, columns, and artwork related to the pulp world - just ask!

The bad news is that we aren't paying one red cent at this time.
Sorry kids, we’re a small magazine with big hopes, but little pocketbooks beyond the expenses of the magazine.
The magazine will be a quarterly affair at this point with a web only distribution (in PDF form).
The experimental part is that we will not be charging for the magazine.
Insane you say? Mad?

Well, we’re looking to generate income for the writers thanks to advertising eventually.
Please give us a try and we look forward to reading your ASTONISHING ADVENTURES!

PS: Send stories with monkeys! I love monkeys – evil monkeys are the best.
Evil monkeys with Human brains are the E-ticket.
Deadline is August 1st, 2007

Dashing Diamond Dick and Other Classic Dime Novels - Coming in June!
Compiled by
J . Randolph Cox

Dime novels —as fundamentally American as baseball and jazz—were an inexpensive and inexhaustible source of popular entertainment for millions of Americans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The five novels in this unique anthology are classic examples of the form, which encompassed Westerns, early science fiction, detective and mystery yarns, and Revolutionary War historicals. From the handsome gambler "Dashing Diamond Dick" and the daring inventor in "Over the Andes with Frank Reade, Jr., in His New Air-Ship" to the mythic baseball player in "Frank Merriwell’s Finish," here are some of the most valiant heroes and notorious rogues in the pantheon. Read together, these novels are fascinating time capsules from a young nation in love with its larger-than-life characters.

Trade paperback, 384 pages, $15, Available June 26th!

TALES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT [MIGNOLA COVER EDITION] - Coming in September!
edited by Joyce Carol Oates
Combining the nineteenth-century gothic sensibility of Edgar Allan Poe with a daring internal vision, Lovecraft's tales foretold a psychically troubled century to come. Lovecraft's universe is a frightening shadow world where reality and nightmare intertwine, and redemption can come only from below. Now, at last, the most important tales of this distinctive American genius are gathered in one volume by National Book Award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates.

A collection of ten prototypical stories by Lovecraft, the influential myth-and monster-maker of Providence, Rhode Island, whose extravagantly gothic tales have spawned and inspired such latterday disciples as Stephen King and Ramsey Campbell. It's ingenuous for Ecco to claim that "Now, at last'' we have a representative Lovecraft (considering all that several publishers have done over the years to keep even his ephemera in print). Still, here are some of his best, including such comparatively little-known triumphs as a harrowing depiction of a surrender to madness ("The Dreams in the Witch-House'') and a superb haunted-house tale ("The Shunned House''). Oates's brief, incisive introduction suggestively compares Lovecraft's experiences and temperament with those of his mentor Poe, and helpfully summarizes the content of the former's apparently immortal "Chthulu Mythos.'' One misses only Lovecraft's hair-raising novella "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.'' But even without it this attractive volume offers a fine chance to sample Lovecraft's ghoulish pleasures.

Flesk Publications: Mark Schultz: Various Drawings Volume 3 - Coming August 1, 2007!
Introduction by Michael Ryan

This third volume of the ongoing Various Drawings series focuses on Mark Schultz’s most recent works and unpublished art. Showcasing only his best in this annual collection, he demonstrates a continued ability to refine his craft through a variety of formats: private commissions, illustrations, comics material, and rare sketchbook art.

New this year is a sixteen-page color section, featuring color roughs for his paintings and tinted experiments. The drawings include new pieces featuring Xenozoic Tales favorites Jack Tenrec and Hannah Dundee, plus a selection of recent comic book covers. Also included are preliminaries for his upcoming Storms at Sea storybook, unpublished brush and ink roughs for book illustration assignments, and more—65 pieces of art rendered variously in pencil, Wolff pencil, and brush and ink.

The Various Drawings series continues to present Schultz’s otherwise unseen privately commissioned works, and, as usual, includes a spectacular gatefold centerpiece.

The hardbound edition is limited to 1000 copies. Exclusive to this edition is a bound in plate reproducing an unpublished illustration. Each copy is numbered and signed.

Hippocampus Press - Coming soon!
The Complete Poetry and Translations of Clark Ashton Smith Volume 3
In addition to being a prolific and innovative poet in his own right, Clark Ashton Smith was a noted translator of French and Spanish poetry. Teaching himself French in the mid-1920s, Smith undertook the ambitious program of translating the entirety of Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil) into English.

Over the next several years he succeeded in translating all but six of the 157 poems that comprised the definitive (1868) edition of Les Fleurs du mal. Smith would begin with a relatively literal prose translation and would later render it into verse; in the end, Smith versified about a third of the poems, the rest remaining in prose.

His mentor George Sterling testified to the remarkable spiritual affinity between Smith and Baudelaire, rendering him the perfect translator of this difficult poet. Smith also translated other noteworthy French poets-Paul Verlaine, Victor Hugo, Alfred de Musset, and Théophile Gautier, among others-as well as such obscure poets as Marie Dauguet and Tristan Klingsor. In the 1940s Smith taught himself Spanish, making splendid verse translations of such poets as Amado Nervo, Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, and and Jorge Isaacs. The great majority of the poems included in this volume are unpublished.

The current edition presents, for the first time, Smith's complete translations in French and Spanish, also printing the French and Spanish texts on facing pages. All texts are annotated by S. T. Joshi and David E. Schultz.

Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) is a towering figure in American poetry and in the literature of fantasy and horror. Born and raised in California, Smith early fell under the tutelage of George Sterling, and later established friendships with H. P. Lovecraft, August Derleth, Benjamin de Casseres, and other leading figures. His tales of exotic fantasy have achieved a worldwide audience, while his meticulously crafted poetry, published here in a complete edition for the first time, will establish him as a leading poetic voice in his time.

S. T. Joshi is a leading authority on H. P. Lovecraft, Lord Dunsany, and other writers of fantasy and horror. He is the author of The Weird Tale (1990) and H. P. Lovecraft: A Life (1996) and the coeditor of World Supernatural Literature: An Encyclopedia. He has edited Smith's juvenile novel, The Black Diamonds, for Hippocampus Press. David E. Schultz is a pioneering scholar on H. P. Lovecraft. He is the editor of Lovecraft's Commonplace Book (1987) and the coeditor (with S. T. Joshi) of Smith's The Last Oblivion: Best Fantastic Poems (2003) and The Shadow of the Unattained: The Letters of George Sterling and Clark Ashton Smith (2005).

But woven among the tales of savage cave men in the country of the Basti, the hideous Gorbuses in the caverns beneath the Forest of Death, and the terrible Gaz is the story of the love this cultured hero feels for a barbarian slave girl who has spurned and discouraged him, working instead toward her own mysterious goal.

Land of Terror by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Introduction to the Bison Books edition by Anne Harris

If you have ever wondered what a civilized man of the twentieth century would do if catapulted into an Old Stone Age where huge cave bears, saber-toothed tigers, monstrous carnivorous dinosaurs, mammoths, and mastodons roamed the savage terrain, you need look no further than Land of Terror, the sixth installment of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Pellucidar series.

Years ago David Innes and Abner Perry bored straight down through five hundred miles of the Earth's crust and landed in Pellucidar, the savage, primeval world that lies at the center of the Earth. This is the story of their continuing adventures in the timeless land of perpetual noon and their encounters with the hideous creatures and savage men who pursue them. Although they encounter enemies at every turn, David and Abner find a few loyal friends as they embark on exhilarating adventures.

352 pages, $19.95
Savage Pellucidar by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Illustrated by J. Allen St. John
Introduction by Harry Turtledove

When David Innes and Abner Perry set out to search for mineral deposits in Perry's newly invented Mechanical Prospectro, they never dreamed of discovering the beautiful, terrifying world of Pellucidar five hundred miles beneath their feet. Cast into a country of fierce fighting men, beautiful women, and vicious beasts, David and Abner take sharply diverging paths. David and his mate, Dian the Beautiful, set out to teach Pellucidar the ways of civilization and succeed in gathering a number of primitive kingdoms into the Empire of Pellucidar. Meanwhile, Abner turns his inventive genius to the science of aeronautics, with dire results for both David and Dian. The seventh and final book in Edgar Rice Burroughs's Pellucidar series, Savage Pellucidar continues the epic story with a masterful blend of action, humor, and suspense.

Riders of the Steppes: The Complete Cossack Adventures, Volume Three by Harold Lamb
Edited by Howard Andrew Jones
Introduction by E. E. Knight

A master of driving pace, exotic setting, and complex plotting, Harold Lamb was one of Robert E. Howard's favorite writers. Here at last is every pulse-pounding, action-packed story of Lamb's greatest hero, Khlit the Cossack, the “wolf of the steppes.” Journey with the unsung grandfather of sword and sorcery in search of ancient tombs, gleaming treasure, and thrilling landscapes; match wits with deadly swordsmen, scheming priests, and evil cults; rescue lovely damsels, ride with bold comrades, and hazard everything on your brains, skill, and a little luck.

This four-volume set collects for the first time the complete Cossack stories of Harold Lamb: every adventure of Khlit the Cossack and those of his friends, allies, and fellow Cossacks, many of which have never appeared between book covers. Compiled and edited by the Harold Lamb scholar Howard Andrew Jones, each volume features essays Lamb wrote about his stories, informative introductions by popular authors, and a wealth of rare, exciting, swashbuckling fiction.

In this third volume, the wily old Cossack Khlit may have aged but he's lost none of his guile. He shepherds his dashing grandson Kirdy into one adventure after another, finally uniting with his allies Ayub and Demid in the climactic story White Falcon—out of print since the 1920s. Here too are the exploits of Ayub and Demid, risking all to safeguard the perilous Russian border from marauding Turks, Tatars, and even bloodthirsty Russian nobles.

Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Exhaustive Scholar’s and Collector’s Descriptive Bibliography of American Periodical, Hardcover, Paperback, and Reprint Editions by Robert B. Zeuschner
In creating some of the most enduring characters in 20th century literature, Burroughs (1875–1950) left a complex bibliographic record of editions, and a long chain of fascinated collectors. The present reference work details all United States versions of all his works published through 1995. Each listing begins with a description of the first magazine appearance of the story (with full publication data); the first hardcover is then examined in detail, with publisher, date, a complete description of the book’s cover and jacket, print run, price, number of pages, and characteristics that separate it from following editions. Similar information is then provided from all subsequent editions.

McFarland: PULP MAGAZINE HOLDINGS DIRECTORY - Now available!
McFarland has published PULP MAGAZINE HOLDINGS DIRECTORY by Jess Nevins.
This is an alphabetical list of pulps accompanied by their library holdings--that is, which issues of which pulps are held in which libraries.

This work is a comprehensive index of American pulp magazines.  Entries are organized alphabetically by magazine title, and offer bibliographic data including author, volume/issue numbers, dates of publication, publisher, and a brief categorization. Each entry also includes a helpful list of current library holdings, if any, among American, Canadian, and European libraries.

According to Nevins,  "I wrote the book because, as a researcher, I needed something like this, but also because there are some libraries that have a surprisingly large set of pulps in their collection, like the Denver Public Library, and few people know about it. So the book will be useful to both researchers and casual fans of the pulps, I think."

PLAGUES, APOCALYPSES AND BUG-EYED MONSTERS: HOW SPECULATIVE FICTION SHOWS US OUR NIGHTMARES  by Heather Urbanski
Speculative fiction—both science fiction and fantasy—reflects, among other things, the fears of the culture that created it, contributing (perhaps unconsciously) to our efforts to prevent our fears from coming true. While the names and media change over time, the themes of speculative fiction have a long history. Nineteenth century works such as Frankenstein and The Invisible Man contain many of the same messages as the more modern tales of Terminator, Jurassic Park and even Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, although almost a century separates their creation.

This critical study discusses the ways in which speculative fiction reflects societal fears and analyzes how such cautionary tales contribute to society’s efforts to avoid the realization of these fears. Beginning with a discussion of the nature of speculative fiction, it takes a look at the characteristics of the cautionary tale. The core of the book, however, is the concept of the “Nightmares Model,” which examines and categorizes the repetition of specific themes within the genre. The dangers of science and technology, the perils of power, and the threat of the unknown are discussed as recurrent themes within a variety of works in prose, film and television. Works analyzed range from Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea to 2001: A Space Odyssey to The Blair Witch Project. Sources include the author’s own observations as a member of the genre’s fandom, a variety of published commentaries and the perspectives of contemporary professionals gained through personal interviews and panel discussions.

THE CITY OF BAAL by Charles Beadle
Mysterious Africa...
At the turn of the 20th Century, Charles Beadle served the British Empire in the colonies of southern Africa; saw duty in the Boer War. Afterwards, he worked his way north through perilous territory as an oddjobber, trader and explorer. When his travels ended, he tapped his storytelling gifts and turned the Africa of experience into enthralling fiction, becoming a stalwart of the great adventure pulps.

Included in this collection of seven short stories and novelettes--originally published in ADVENTURE and THE FRONTIER --are strange tales of daring quests, wildlife in riot, treacherous characters, inscrutable witchdoctors, bizarre tribes, gruesome fates--all the mystery, discovery, danger . . . and dread, of unknown lands. From small-scale stories of isolated outposts under stress, to epic sagas of lost races in the depths of the jungle--from the macabre to the breathtaking--here is adventure at its best.  Also included is a detailed discussion of the historical context of Beadle’s stories, and a look at his fascinating life and career.

The Pulp Rack - New additions!
I was remiss in not sending a note that I'd updated The Pulp Rack last weekend -- the reading group of the Spur & Lock Mercantile and Sundries Emporium, The Woodstove Whittlers and Wrangling Association, returns to discuss (with its usual aplomb) "Summer Kill" -- a Story by Lewis B. Patten.

You'll find it here:  http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/05/asummer_killaa_1.html

Some members of the reading group are partial to the writing of Lewis B. Patten, in particular his action-driven narratives and hard-nosed characters. Those in the group who hold a differing opinion argue that Patten is a plot-dependent hack who couldn't vary his characterizations if his Stetson depended on it. The WWWA decided to try some short stories by Patten to see if anyone might be swayed to another opinion. They chose "Summer Kill" as the initial target of their ire and delight.

This week's spiel for patrons to put some pennies in The Pulp Rack's pocket: Some pals of mine have begun publishing series-specific collections of stories reprinted from the pages of DAREDEVIL ACES. Under the Ace of Aces imprint, the first volume is "Captain Babyface: The Complete Adventures" by Steve Fisher. Fisher is probably better known as a writer of hard-boiled detective yarns, and he was a buddy of Frederick Faust (Max Brand) during his Hollywood years.

You can purchase "Captain Babyface" at Amazon.com by visiting this URL:
http://www.amazon.com/Captain-Babyface-Adventures-Steve-Fisher/dp/0979409209/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/pulprack-20

The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard - Volume 1 is expected to ship in late May!
The REH Foundation is proud to present "The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard". This three-volume, limited-edition series collects all the known letters written by REH. The collection will include dozens of previously unpublished letters and hundreds of poems not found in any other collection.

"The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard" reveal a side of Howard’s personality that readers of his fiction might not suspect existed. Full of humor, philosophical musings, travelogue, historical sketches, and opinions on contemporary politics and events — local, national, and international — Howard’s letters provide important insight into the life and times of one of the most influential pulp-era writers of the twentieth century.

This three-volume set collects more than 330 letters, from the early ones to his Texas friends, most notably Tevis Clyde Smith, and continuing through correspondence with fellow writers Clark Ashton Smith, E. Hoffmann Price, and others. Also included are Howard’s letters to H. P. Lovecraft, which constitute one of the most intriguing correspondence cycles in the history of Fantasy fiction.

Each volume will be printed in hardback with dust jacket, in a limited quantity of 300 copies, each individually numbered. Cover design and artwork is by Jim & Ruth Keegan.

Volume 1, covering the years 1923-1929, is now available for pre-ordering. This volume is expected to start shipping by late May 2007. Those wishing to pre-order the complete set of three together may also order at this time.

The price for Volume 1 is $44 for REHF Members, $49 for non-members (all prices in US dollars) plus shipping. (How to become a member? See here.)

Note that Volume 2 (1930-1933) and Volume 3 (1934-1936) will be somewhat larger, and cost $53 apiece for REHF member, $59 apiece for non-members. These two later volumes are expected to ship in June and August, respectively.

All three volumes may be ordered together for $143 for REHF members, $159 for non-members.
Further, if you order all three at once, you will be guaranteed to receive the same number of each volume.

Texas residents must add 8.25% to the total for sales tax. If you’d like confirmation on the final total of your order, please contact us at info@rehfoundation.org. How to order:

GORDON SCOTT PASSES AWAY AT AGE 79
Gordon Scott passed away Monday, April 3o, at approximately 10:50am EST.  For the past few weeks, Gordon had been suffering post-operative complications from a recent surgery, and it was feared that this would be the inevitable conclusion.

A native of Portland, Oregon, Gordon M. Werschkul first majored in physical education at the University of Oregon, but dropped out after one semester. He joined the Army became an infantry drill instructor, then a military policeman. After his honorable discharge in 1947 he went on to be a fireman, cowboy, and farm machinery salesman. His discovery is pure Hollywood legend. In 1953, he was working as a lifeguard at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas when he was spotted by a pair of Hollywood agents, who were impressed by his muscular physique and 19" biceps. They introduced Mr. Werschkul to Sol Lesser who had already conducted 200 tests in search of a new Tarzan to replace the departing Lex Barker. The producer cast him in "Tarzan's Hidden Jungle" (1955), gave him a seven-year contract and a new last name. It also led to romance as Scott married his co-star, Vera Miles.

The first three Tarzans pictures, made by Lesser and released through RKO and M-G-M, were mediocre, but the last two, for producer Sy Weintraub through Paramount, displayed a more articulate and intelligent Tarzan and are considered among the best of this series. In 1960, Gordon turned down an offer to do further Tarzan pics and went to Italy to star in a series of sword and sandal spectaculars and spaghetti westerns.

Howard Days 2007 - June 8 and 9, 2007!
Leo Grin has release tentative information regarding this years Howard Days in The Cimmerian Blog.
"Tentative highlights include a Thursday trip to Fort McKavett and Enchanted Rock State Park, which if you’ve never been to them is a must. We could also hit Clear Creek Cemetery, where Novalyne Price is buried. Barring any unforeseen obstacles, the Guest of Honor this year is Wandering Star/Del Rey artist Greg Manchess, so bring down your copies of "The Conquering Sword of Conan" for Greg to sign and doodle in. I’m going to try to hold a few less panels this year, and make them a bit less biographical and more story-and-character oriented, more “fun” for the general fan. I know I’m a bit burned out on the endless fighting and controversy concerning biographical matters, and want to reconnect with my original love for the work. We’ll see how it turns out — stay tuned for more Howard Days news as it becomes available."

LaPlata Doc Savage Convention - October 20-21st!
This will be the 2nd annual LaPlata Doc Savage Convention!
Last year was a blast and established a permanent display for Lester Dent and his writings in the LaPlata Library.
There is no registration fee, donations to the pulp museum are more than welcome though.

The Con will be held at various locations by "event" throughout the very tiny town of LaPlata but we will initially meet at the Depot Inn conference room.  Saturday runs from 8am to 4pm with a Big BBQ bash afterwards.  Sunday start time will be determined by everyone at the BBQ and last till people need to go!

Events Include:
Tour of Lester Dent's House
Buy/Trade/Selling of Pulps and related goodies
Viewing of Lester Dent related Films "Voyage of the Albatross" and hopefully Matt Heiberts wonderful "DOCumentary"

This year we will have a commemorative booklet for attendees.
**A sneak peek opening of the Lester Dent Museum of Pulp History!**
Pulp Fans BBQ.
Pulp related movies for those interested.
Memorial dedication at Dent's Gravesite
We may even have a few folks on hand like last year, to tell first hand stories about Lester Dent.
Contact Wayne Judge for more details at  shaolin770@yahoo.com

Here is the contact info for the Depot Inn.  BE SURE to tell them you need a room for the Doc Savage Convention if you inquire.  Otherwise they may tell you they are full.  Sharing rooms is recommended as the hotel is filling up fast!  The management did say they could get spare roll away beds for rooms if need be. 660-332-4669

The Lester Dent Museum of Pulp History - Now accepting donations!
The Lester Dent Museum of Pulp History is a go!
Wayne Judge recently moved to LaPlata with the intention of starting a full fledged museum to Lester Dent.
After much thought that idea evolved into a museum for ALL pulps in the hometown of and dedicated to Lester Dent.

A special sneak peek opening is scheduled for this years LaPlata Doc Con.  Local interested citizens have come together and an entire new building is being built to house the museum.  10,000 square feet!  It will feature exhibits on pulp art and authors, history, life size dioramas,Old Time Radio (with listening stations) and even Movie Serials.  The museum is taking donations of items for the museum and any donor will be credited, and their name put on the "Friends of the Museum" plaque.  This is a collection for all of pulpdom and starting next year will begin hosting a pulp convention of its own as well. Think about that, a permanent pulp venue!

The museum will be located in a temporary location starting this October until the new building is completed.  It has already received generous donations from Tom and Ginger Johnson, Chuck Juzek, Ron Hanna, Barney Dannelke, and others.
Wayne Judge is happy to answer any and all questions concerning the museum or the Doc Savage convention.  Just shoot him an email!  Wayne will be at the Windy City Convention promoting the Museum (as well as his books).  Those that know him know of my dedication to this, my dream.  Wayne hopes to see you in LaPlata over the next year or so!

Chuck Juzek has made an incredible and generous donation to the museum.
Chuck donated seven boxes of material including:
A FULL RUN of Capt. Future including all the Startling Stories appearances
All the Captain Future paperback reprints
A FULL RUN of Fantastic Stories and Fantastic Stories Quarterly
Rare Big Little Buck Rogers and Big Little style Flash Gordon and Brick Bradford books
SUPER RARE Big Big Book of Buck Rogers
Spider paperbacks (virtually every incarnation) and Spider Reprints
Several collections of full size and "card size" pulp cover reproductions on high quality photo paper.
These are really stunning pieces!  AND...Theres one more box yet to come!
Chuck's amazing donation now allows (demands actually!) a featured Captain Future exhibit and will help to round out the Sci-Fi, and Spider exhibits too!  The Captain Future exhibit will feature the plaque dedicated to Chuck as well (he's also the author of the Captain Future Handbook coming from Wild Cat Books).

Tom and Ginger Johnson, Mark Lambert, Ron Hanna, Barney Dannelke, and more have already made contributions!
Contact Wayne Judge to make your museum contribution.
When you donate you get a brass nameplate on the "Friends of the Museum" plaque.

Additionally, Wayne has announced that there are certain individuals that should be on the "Friends of the Museum" plaque for the simple reason that they have done so much for pulpdom over the years.
The very least The museum can do is say "Thank You".
Wayne is adding names in threes and will gladly take suggestions on more names and people along the lines of this criteria.  The first 3 names added as a "Thank You" from pulpdom and the museum are:
Wooda "Nick" Carr
Anthony Tollin
Bill Thom

PULPCON36 - July 5-8, 2007
PULPCON 36 will be held July 5-8, 2006 at the Dayton Convention Center in Dayton, Ohio.
PulpCon is pleased, and proud, to announce the Guests of Honor for PulpCon 36.

Glenn Lord
By way of celebrating the 100th anniversary of Robert E. Howard (2006) and the anniversary of the publication of the first Conan story in WEIRD TALES, Mr. Glenn Lord has accepted our invitation to attend PulpCon 36 as a Guest of Honor.  Mr. Lord was instrumental in the revival of Conan and Howard's other characters.  Following are just a few other facts gleaned from the internet and individuals concerning Glenn:  "For nearly half a century he has been championing Howard and his work, from his landmark publication of the first REH poetry collection, ALWAYS COMES EVENING (Arkham House, 1959) and his legendary REH fanzine, THE HOWARD COLLECTOR (1960-1972), through over thirty years as the literary agent for the owners of Howard's works, to his current involvement in working with the editors of the Wandering Star/Del Rey and Wildside Press Howard books, and the forthcoming updating of his monumental bio-bibliography, THE LAST CELT (Donald M. Grant, 1976), Glenn has befriended, assisted, advised, and mentored two generations of REH fans, scholars, and editors.  There is much more but I think you can see why we are honored to have him as a Guest of Honor.

David Saunders
In honor of celebrating the 100th birthday of noted pulp artist Norman Saunders, David Saunders has also accepted our invitation to be a Guest of Honor at PulpCon 36.  David will present a slide show of almost all of Norman's original pulp work and give a brief description of his life and work.  He will also talk about his "obsessive process of researching biographical information on pulp artists".  I am sure most of you have read some of his work in ILLUSTRATION magazine and other periodicals. In his own words David describes his latest project: "I have just finished my latest biographical essay on the pulp artist ALLEN ANDERSON, who was actually the artist I knew best, since he was my father's lifelong best friend, so this latest essay has been a meaningful sentimental experience to let other people who enjoy his work know what a sweet person he was".  (David would also like to speak with anyone who might own any of Anderson's original artwork.  If you know of anyone contact me  and I will forward the information to him).  Previous works by David include biographical articles and checklists on artists such as Ernest Chiriacka, John W. Scott, Rafael DeSoto, and, of course, Norman Saunders. David has been a good friend of PulpCon's and we look forward to having him as a Guest of Honor.

Visit the Pulpcon website for completeregistration details and a tentative schedule of events.

Pulp Podcast
David Riganti is thinking about creating a podcast aimed at discussing the Pulps and anything related to pulp era fiction.

David posted the following email in several pulp newsgroups:
I am fairly well read when it comes to REH (and David Gemmell, whom I consider S&S of the highest quality) but otherwise my interests lean toward SF.  I have been reading quite a bit of pulp fiction recently (I am in the middle of Hardboiled Cthulhu at the moment).

I see the podcast as a relaxed mix of reviews, "in depth" articles, and possibly fiction readings (if anyone submits any).  Anyway, what I want to know is, would there be enough interest in a podcast about pulp era fiction, or sword and sorcery in particular?  Secondly, as the subject is quite broad, is there anyone out there who would be interested in contributing to the show.

I am looking for at least one co-host, as well as, possibly, a couple of other contributors who would be happy to read reviews, do interviews etc.
As I am in the UK, an American co-host would be ideal, to broaden the appeal of the show.
Also there would be a need for written contributions of both reviews and longer articles.

I am happy enough to edit and do the technical work with the sound recordings, but I would like to find someone to create and run the website for the podcast. My web-design skills are basic at best, and I would like the website to look fairly professional.

So, what do you folks think, is there enough interest? Is there anyone interested in contributing? Is anyone already doing something similar (in which case please let me know so I can listen in on it)? If you think I should just forget it please let me know why!!!!

Anyway, please either discuss it here, email me or join my Yahoo Group if you want to get involved.

Science Fiction Book Club - TALES OF MARS by Edgar Rice Burroughs!
In TALES OF MARS, the last epic adventures of John Carter, Warlord of Mars, are about to unfold.

In "Llana of Gathol," Carter rushes headlong into danger as he searches for his lost granddaughter, Llana. From clashes with Lum Tar O, the undead corpse plaguing the city of Horz, to enslavement by the Black Martians, to the infiltration of the brutal army of Hin Abtol, John Carter,  Pan Dan Chee (Llana’s sworn suitor), and even Llana herself struggle against impossible odds to live and fight another day.

In "John Carter of Mars," two more epic tales find Carter battling it out with enemies far and wide. First, Carter must rescue his beloved Deja Thoris from the synthetic man known as Pew Mogel. Mogel intends to conquer Mars. But first, he has to get around a very angry John Carter….

In the second tale, Carter is kidnapped and taken to the faraway world of Jupiter where a warlike race known as the Morgors intend to have Carter serve them. The Morgors hope that he can give them the information they need to make Mars an easy conquest. But when Carter won’t oblige, he’s tossed into prison, with a slow and painful death as his reward. Unless, of course, he can somehow escape…. Jacket art by Michael Whelan. Approximately 304 pages for $12.99.

The first three books in the series, UNDER THE MOONS OF MARS, RETURN TO MARS, and MEN OF MARS are still available.
