Windy City Pulp and Paper Con - May 4 thru 6, 2007! LATE BREAKING
NEWS! The
hotel has just informed us, on April 27, that we will have access to the dealer
room earlier on Friday, May 4, than we'd been told. The REVISED Dealer Room
hours for Friday are dealer set-up beginning at 1:00 p.m., with the room open
to the public from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sorry for the late notice, but
we were just told of this development. Guest of Honor, Ken Kelly, has had to cancel due to some health reasons. The new incarnation of The Spider Ring will
be available to fans for the FIRST TIME ANYWHERE at next weekend's
Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention in Chicago! Baen Books' new release THE SPIDER: ROBOT TITANS OF GOTHAM should be hitting bookstores at the end of May or beginning
of June. To promote this new volume, Baen and Argosy Communications
have revived the tradition of
The Spider Ring giveaway. Though they initially planned on targeting only the San Diego Comic-Con
in July, through the efforts
of Windy City's Mark Trost and Doug Ellis, Spider Ring designer Chris Kalb, and Argosy president
Joel Frieman, The Spider Ring will now make its public debut, fittingly,
at a Pulp-centric show!Baen and Argosy are eager to say "thank you" to the Pulp fans, who have kept The Spider alive all these years, and are excited to hit this boutique convention, as well as PulpCon, in advance of the splash they are hoping to make at the massive San Diego Comic-Con in late July. Baen will not have a booth at the show, so attendees are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled for the unique (and uniquely Pulpy) way in which The Spider Ring will be distributed. Thanks to Chris Kalb for the tip! During Saturday's auction, we will be auctioning 229 issues of Weird Tales from an estate.
Here's the list of the Munsey material

MEXICAN
PULP ART - Arriving
in comic shops May 2nd! introduction by Maria Cristina Tavera The lurid cover art of Mexican pulp novels are a pop culture revelation. Never before seen in an English - or even Spanish - language collection are the often surreal and psychedelic images of extraterrestrials, robots, dinosaurs, dastardly killers, Zorro, Santo, and many other icons from stories involving suspense, mystery, romance, and the supernatural. Collected by Minneapolis' Bobbette Axelrod (owner of the Sister Fun toy shop) and Baltimore's Ted Frankel (proprietor of the American Visionary Art Museum's store, Sideshow), Mexican Pulp Art presents the most striking examples of this sensational art form of the 1960s and 1970s. Researcher Maria Cristina Tavera's introduction tells us about the original publishing companies, artists, and comic story lines of Micro Legends, Micro Suspense, Micro Mystery, and The Unexpected. The Pulp Rack -
New additions! This week's posting to The Pulp Rack: "Tug Norton, Detective: A Series from Detective Fiction Weekly" is another essay by Monte Herridge about a series character from that well-known magazine. Tug Norton is a private detective and creation of prolific author Edward Parrish Ware (1884-1967?). These stories are told first hand by Tug Norton: ". . . case of record in the archives of the Kaw Valley Detective Bureau, of which I, Tug Norton, am founder, owner and chief operative, . . ." ("The Queen's Patteran") Norton notes that when business is dull, he entertains and instructs himself by studying his casebook ("The Devil Winks"). This is how some of the Norton stories begin, with him reliving the case he has looked up in his casebook. Although I've posted this essay in the Adventure section, it could easily fit into the Western section, as Tug is a former cowboy, and many of his tales occur in what was the "contemporary West" as pictured in the pulps of the day. The article also includes a list of story titles in the series and the issue date in which they appeared. You'll find it all here: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/04/tug_norton_dete.html Don't miss Monte's previous DFW essay for The Pulp Rack, about series character "Hugo Oakes, Lawyer-Detective" -- a precursor of sorts to Perry Mason, and created by J. Lane Linklater. You can find it elsewhere on The Pulp Rack by visiting this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2006/07/hugo_oakes_lawy.html One of the few (sadly so) DFW authors in print these days is Erle Stanley Gardner. Hard Case Crime, the paperback imprint of Leisure Books with the wonderful retro-taste in crime fiction, has one of Gardner's Cool and Lam series novels available at Amazon: TOP OF THE HEAP. Drop a few coins in The Pulp Rack's pocket to help support our work here by purchasing this novel through this link: http://www.amazon.com/Top-Heap-Hard-Case-Crime/dp/0843953527/ref=pd_bbs_2/pulprack-20 As always, thanks for your patronage. Bison Books - Coming in June! Back to the Stone Age by Edgar Rice Burroughs Illustrated by John Coleman Burroughs Introduction to the Bison Books edition by Gary Dunham The fifth installment of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Pellucidar series, Back to the Stone Age recounts the strange adventures of Lieutenant von Horst, a member of the original crew that sailed to Pellucidar with Jason Gridley and Tarzan who is left behind in the inner world. Horst wanders friendless and alone from one danger to the next among the Stone Age peoples, mighty reptiles, and huge animals that have been extinct on the outer crust for thousands of years. But woven among the tales of savage cave men in the country of the Basti, the hideous Gorbuses in the caverns beneath the Forest of Death, and the terrible Gaz is the story of the love this cultured hero feels for a barbarian slave girl who has spurned and discouraged him, working instead toward her own mysterious goal. 336 pages, $19.95 Land of Terror by Edgar Rice Burroughs Introduction to the Bison Books edition by Anne Harris If you have ever wondered what a civilized man of the twentieth century would do if catapulted into an Old Stone Age where huge cave bears, saber-toothed tigers, monstrous carnivorous dinosaurs, mammoths, and mastodons roamed the savage terrain, you need look no further than Land of Terror, the sixth installment of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Pellucidar series. Years ago David Innes and Abner Perry bored straight down through five hundred miles of the Earth's crust and landed in Pellucidar, the savage, primeval world that lies at the center of the Earth. This is the story of their continuing adventures in the timeless land of perpetual noon and their encounters with the hideous creatures and savage men who pursue them. Although they encounter enemies at every turn, David and Abner find a few loyal friends as they embark on exhilarating adventures. 352 pages, $19.95 Savage Pellucidar by Edgar Rice Burroughs Illustrated by J. Allen St. John Introduction by Harry Turtledove When David Innes and Abner Perry set out to search for mineral deposits in Perry's newly invented Mechanical Prospectro, they never dreamed of discovering the beautiful, terrifying world of Pellucidar five hundred miles beneath their feet. Cast into a country of fierce fighting men, beautiful women, and vicious beasts, David and Abner take sharply diverging paths. David and his mate, Dian the Beautiful, set out to teach Pellucidar the ways of civilization and succeed in gathering a number of primitive kingdoms into the Empire of Pellucidar. Meanwhile, Abner turns his inventive genius to the science of aeronautics, with dire results for both David and Dian. The seventh and final book in Edgar Rice Burroughs's Pellucidar series, Savage Pellucidar continues the epic story with a masterful blend of action, humor, and suspense. 304 pages, $19.95 Riders of the Steppes: The Complete Cossack Adventures, Volume Three by Harold Lamb Edited by Howard Andrew Jones Introduction by E. E. Knight A master of driving pace, exotic setting, and complex plotting, Harold Lamb was one of Robert E. Howard's favorite writers. Here at last is every pulse-pounding, action-packed story of Lamb's greatest hero, Khlit the Cossack, the “wolf of the steppes.” Journey with the unsung grandfather of sword and sorcery in search of ancient tombs, gleaming treasure, and thrilling landscapes; match wits with deadly swordsmen, scheming priests, and evil cults; rescue lovely damsels, ride with bold comrades, and hazard everything on your brains, skill, and a little luck. This four-volume set collects for the first time the complete Cossack stories of Harold Lamb: every adventure of Khlit the Cossack and those of his friends, allies, and fellow Cossacks, many of which have never appeared between book covers. Compiled and edited by the Harold Lamb scholar Howard Andrew Jones, each volume features essays Lamb wrote about his stories, informative introductions by popular authors, and a wealth of rare, exciting, swashbuckling fiction. In this third volume, the wily old Cossack Khlit may have aged but he's lost none of his guile. He shepherds his dashing grandson Kirdy into one adventure after another, finally uniting with his allies Ayub and Demid in the climactic story White Falcon—out of print since the 1920s. Here too are the exploits of Ayub and Demid, risking all to safeguard the perilous Russian border from marauding Turks, Tatars, and even bloodthirsty Russian nobles. 544 pages, $21.95 Swords of the Steppes: The Complete Cossack Adventures, Volume Four by Harold Lamb Edited by Howard Andrew Jones Introduction by Barrie Tait Collins A master of driving pace, exotic setting, and complex plotting, Harold Lamb was one of Robert E. Bob Weinberg - THE SCIENCE OF STEPHEN KING! THE SCIENCE OF STEPHEN KING by Bob Weinberg and Lois Gresh is coming in August 2007! THE SCIENCE OF STEPHEN KING appeals to both the scientist and the long-time reader of Stephen King in me. Weinberg and Gresh use concepts from King's fiction as launching pads for in-depth explorations of concepts as diverse as ESP, pyrokinesis, time travel, artificial intelligence, quantum chemistry, alternate realities, string theory, and the possibility that we'll be visited by aliens or that we'll face a global pandemic. In a style reminiscent of science populists like Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov, they present challenging concepts in clear, easy-to-grasp language. If you've ever read Stephen King's works and asked yourself what's real and what could be real, you might be surprised by the answers Weinberg and Gresh provide. As they so cleverly explain, much of what Stephen King writes about in his novels is closer to reality than you might think."--Bev Vincent, Ph.D., author of The Road to the Dark Tower A superb overview of King's use of scientific concepts in his stories. And considering all the scary talk lately about pandemic flu, their chapter on The Stand is timely as hell. --Stephen Spignesi, author of The Complete Stephen King Encyclopedia, The Lost Work of Stephen King and The Essential Stephen King. Just as Sagan and Asimov popularized science to the masses by making it entertaining and informative, so too do Weinberg and Gresh in this book as they boldly go to explore every nook and cranny in the Stephen King universe. Compulsively readable and thought-provoking. --George Beahm, author of The Stephen King Companion, Stephen King: America s Best-Loved Boogeyman, and Stephen King from A to Z. Trade paperback, 288 pages, Wiley

The Pulp Rack Today's posting to The Pulp Rack features some discussion on two Lewis. B. Patten westerns, "The Cheyenne Pool" and "The Youngerman Guns," by The Woodstove Whittlers and Wrangling Association. What is this Association, you ask? It is the reading group of the Spur & Lock Mercantile and Sundries Emporium. The reading group was the idea of Adolphus Husky -- he wanted an excuse to tell his wife whenever she claimed he was being lazy sitting around the woodstove at the Mercantile all winter; by participating in the rigorous and vigorous debates on literature, Adolphus could say he was expanding his mind. When he played this tactic one day at the dinner table, his wife, Renee, then asked if his mind would need a longer belt by the middle of February, just like his britches do each year. Oh well. You can find this report from the Association by visiting this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/04/the_cheyenne_po.html Meanwhile, please feel free to drop a few pennies in the Mercantile's (and The Pulp Rack's) till by purchasing a copy of A Century of Great Western Stories by John Jakes at Amazon by following this link: http://www.amazon.com/Century-Great-Western-Stories/dp/0312869851/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/pulprack-20 As always, thanks for your patronage. Wildside Press: ALIAS "THE NIGHT WIND" - Now available! "ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND" by Varick Vanardy Written by the “father of [serial detective] Nick Carter,” Frederic Van Rensselaer Dey, and published by the man who introduced the “pulp” magazine to the world, Frank A. Munsey, the Night Wind was a super-endowed character whose fictional life-span ran from 1913 to the early 1920s. Bingham Harvard, alias the Night Wind, used his prodigious strength (roughly 5 times that of the average man) to rescue himself, friends and family from various plots of “frame-ups,” extortion and outright physical violence. His exploits were serialized in Munsey’s THE CAVALIER and ALL-STORY WEEKLY just a few months after the appearance of Tarzan in October 1912 and wrapping up just before the first appearance of Zorro on August 1919 by the same publisher. Upon the close of a pulp magazine serial, the installments were bound and reissued in hardcover format. There were a total of four hardcover novels starring the Night Wind: ALIAS "THE NIGHT WIND", THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND, THE NIGHT WIND'S PROMISE, and LADY OF THE NIGHT WIND. In 1923 the first novel was adapted for the silent screen and released with much popular appeal as ALIAS "THE NIGHT WIND." After almost 100 years out of print, ALIAS "THE NIGHT WIND" is available again. Re-typeset - but not revised or abridged in any way, this edition comes with an informative introduction by Christopher R. Yates putting the author and character in historical context. In addition, the hardbound and paperback formats of this book sport the color cover from the original, first appearance of the Night Wind in THE CAVALIER magazine from May 10, 1913. Available now from Barnes & Noble.com, Amazon.com and Diesel eBooks in hardcover, paperback and ebook formats. Stay tuned for the pending release of the next three Night Wind titles from the original series and a new, exciting fifth installment... Con - May 4 thru 6, 2007! GUESTS OF HONOR: KEN KELLY & GARY GIANNI In keeping with our Conan theme, artists Ken Kelly and Gary Gianni will be our Guests of Honor this year. Among the many paperback and magazine covers Ken Kelly has painted are numerous portrayals of Conan, beginning with the Berkley paperbacks of the 1970's, while Gary Gianni has brought Conan to life in the recent Wandering Star volumes. Both have depicted numerous other REH heroes as well. ART SHOW: We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art. For the third year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (www.illustrationmagazine. com). If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us. The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons. PULP FILM FEST: Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film. We will also be showing episodes of the classic TV series, Thriller, based on stories that had originally appeared in WEIRD TALES. More info will be posted on the website closer to the con. The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (www.geocities.com/poppub/). PROGRAM BOOK: All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints. To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8'' x 6.75''), half page $40 (4 1/8'' x 3 3/8''), business card size $25 (3.25” x 2''). The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 1, 2007. Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@insightbb.com for ad matters (other than payment). CON SUITE: Our con suite will operate from Friday afternoon until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby. HOTEL: For our seventh show, we’ll be in the NW suburbs of Chicago. The Sheraton is 15-20 minutes NW of O’Hare Airport. Room rates are $97/night; parking is free. For those bringing families, the Sheraton’s indoor waterpark is opening this fall, and the Sheraton is also located two miles from Woodfield Mall, which is the Chicago area’s largest mall. The hotel is 1/2 mile from the Chicago Metra train line, which runs to downtown Chicago. The hotel is also located next to Arlington Park Racecourse, the premier horse racing venue in Illinois. The con coincides with opening weekend, and on the Saturday, in addition to the regular slate of races they’ll be simulcasting the Kentucky Derby. So if you still have any money left after buying stuff at the con, you can put a few dollars down on the Derby. The hotel has complimentary transportation to and from Woodfield Mall, the train station and the track. MEMBERSHIPS: Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $15 for Sunday only. At the request of several attendees at past cons, we are, for the first time, experimenting with and offering the option of buying an Early Bird Admission for non-dealers for $60, which is a three day membership which allows entry to the dealer room on Friday at 10 a.m. (which is one hour after dealer setup begins and two hours before the con generally opens to the public). If you have material you’d like to submit, please contact us at info@windycitypulpandpaper.com. The registration form is now posted on the website with complete details. http://www.windycitypulpandpaper.com/ The bulletin board section of the website is also active, so members can join and post things of general interest regarding the convention, including sharing rides, rooms, etc. IMPORTANT SCHEDULING CHANGE! FRIDAY NIGHT PULP PARTY! Despite having booked our hotel dates and times nearly a year in advance, we've just been informed by the hotel that they've double-booked the dealer room for Friday, May 4, and we will not have access to this room until Friday evening. But would something like this deter Conan the Cimmerian? No, by Crom! And it won't deter us either! Accordingly, our Friday schedule has changed for the dealer room. We will now begin dealer set-up as soon as we can on Friday, which we currently anticipate will be between 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. It's possible that dealer set-up may be able to begin a little earlier than that; as the situation becomes clearer, we will post updates to the website. The dealer room will open to the public at 7:00 p.m. and will remain open until midnight for our Friday Night Pulp Party. We will begin our Pulp Filmfest on Friday afternoon for those arriving prior to the opening of the dealer room, and will no longer be selling Early Bird Admissions. The flier is still accurate for Saturday's and Sunday's schedules. We apologize for the late change but hope you'll still join us for a fun Friday night filled with buying and selling pulps (and telling tall tales of the ones that got away)!

PULPCON 36 - July 5-8, 2007
PULPCON 36 will be held July 5-8, 2006 at the Dayton Convention Center in Dayton, Ohio. PulpCon is pleased, and proud, to announce the Guests of Honor for PulpCon 36. Glenn Lord By way of celebrating the 100th anniversary of Robert E. Howard (2006) and the anniversary of the publication of the first Conan story in WEIRD TALES, Mr. Glenn Lord has accepted our invitation to attend PulpCon 36 as a Guest of Honor. Mr. Lord was instrumental in the revival of Conan and Howard's other characters. Following are just a few other facts gleaned from the internet and individuals concerning Glenn: "For nearly half a century he has been championing Howard and his work, from his landmark publication of the first REH poetry collection, ALWAYS COMES EVENING (Arkham House, 1959) and his legendary REH fanzine, THE HOWARD COLLECTOR (1960-1972), through over thirty years as the literary agent for the owners of Howard's works, to his current involvement in working with the editors of the Wandering Star/Del Rey and Wildside Press Howard books, and the forthcoming updating of his monumental bio-bibliography, THE LAST CELT (Donald M. Grant, 1976), Glenn has befriended, assisted, advised, and mentored two generations of REH fans, scholars, and editors. There is much more but I think you can see why we are honored to have him as a Guest of Honor. David Saunders In honor of celebrating the 100th birthday of noted pulp artist Norman Saunders, David Saunders has also accepted our invitation to be a Guest of Honor at PulpCon 36. David will present a slide show of almost all of Norman's original pulp work and give a brief description of his life and work. He will also talk about his "obsessive process of researching biographical information on pulp artists". I am sure most of you have read some of his work in ILLUSTRATION magazine and other periodicals. In his own words David describes his latest project: "I have just finished my latest biographical essay on the pulp artist ALLEN ANDERSON, who was actually the artist I knew best, since he was my father's lifelong best friend, so this latest essay has been a meaningful sentimental experience to let other people who enjoy his work know what a sweet person he was". (David would also like to speak with anyone who might own any of Anderson's original artwork. If you know of anyone contact me and I will forward the information to him). Previous works by David include biographical articles and checklists on artists such as Ernest Chiriacka, John W. Scott, Rafael DeSoto, and, of course, Norman Saunders. David has been a good friend of PulpCon's and we look forward to having him as a Guest of Honor. Visit the Pulpcon website for complete registration details and a tentative schedule of events.

The Pulp Rack Second in our series of cold-weather-themed reading, we look at Edgar Poe's only novel-length work, "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym." An influence on the Jules Verne novel examined last week, The Adventures of Captain Hatteras, and containing elements that later became cliches in pulp fiction, PYM is an interesting bit of American fiction. You'll find this entry at the following URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/03/edgar_allan_poe.html Sticking with a winter theme for posts seems to have worked out. Despite two weeks of unseasonable 80-degree weather here, with everything blooming and growing, today it's 30 degrees F and snowing. Today we wrap up our series of polar-themed reviews with "Charles Stilson's ERB knockoff: "Polaris of the Snows." Despite the Burroughs boom and the wide availability of Burroughs-inspired novels from Ace and other paperback publishers during the 1960s, I hadn't read this story until recently. Many thanks to Brian E. Brown for making an inexpensive reprint available, apparently the first complete-in-one publication edition of this novel, which first was published in ALL-STORY WEEKLY December 18, 1915 thru January 1, 1916. You'll find this entry at the following URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/04/charles_stilson.html As always, thanks for your patronage.
