Age
of Aces Books - New pulp reprint publisher! The mission of Age of Aces Books is to gather
together in single volumes many of the great series of aviation heroes that
ran in DARE-DEVIL ACES in the 30's and 40's. The first release (available
now on Amazon.com) is CAPTAIN BABYFACE: THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES by acclaimed hard-boiled writer Steve Fisher.
These ten tales tell the story of Captain Jed Garrett, of the US Special Agent
Corps, and his struggle to defeat the evil German genius, Mr.Death. Garrett, known
as Captain Babyface because of his youthful appearance, is assisted by his dog,
Click the hellhound. Together, they try to foil Mr. Death's bloodthirsty schemes,
which threaten defeat for the Allies in WWI. For Jed Garrett, his orders are simple: Kill Mr. Death! But who is Mr. Death? One of Germany's brightest chemists and inventors, he had grown weary of life and entered a monastery near Alsace-Lorraine. But war came and the monastery was bombed. Severely injured, German surgeons patched him back together, though he was left horribly disfigured. And now, sworn to vengeance against the Americans, he uses his evil genius for Germany in the “War to End All War.” Author Steve Fisher is best known for his hardboiled work in BLACK MASK MAGAZINE and in novels like “I Wake Up Screaming”. In Popular Publications long-running aviation pulp DARE-DEVIL ACES, he created the ten titanic tales of Captain Babyface. For the first time, they are presented together in one volume. This is the first in a series from Age of Aces Books that will feature some of the greatest aviation pulp heroes of the 1930's. CAPTAIN BABYFACE: THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES was designed by the great Chris Kalb and features Frederick Blakeslee's original illustrations. It is 230 pages and is now available on Amazon.com for $16.99. Coming soon! Coming soon from Age of Aces Books will be Volume 1 of Robert J. Hogan's The Red Falcon. There were 34 appearances in DARE-DEVIL ACES by Barry Rand and his aide, the fierce African warrior Sika, and Age of Aces is pleased to be reprinting all of them. Other volumes being prepared for release in the next year will feature Ralph Oppenheim's "The Three Mosquitoes", C. M. Miller's "Chinese Brady", and Robert J. Hogan's "Smoke Wade". Age of Aces Books does not have a website up yet, but one is on the way. You will read about it here once it goes online! | Click on the cover for a larger image. |

Gateways to Forever: The Story of
the Science-Fiction Magazines, 1970-1980 - Coming Spring 2007! In the 1970s science fiction exploded into the popular consciousness, appearing everywhere along the cultural spectrum—from David Bowie’s alien stage persona to the massively successful global juggernaut that was Star Wars. With the American involvement in Vietnam reaching its bitter conclusion, the Apollo moon program ending, and awareness of humanity’s destructive impact on the environment increasing, our planet began to seem a smaller, lonelier, more fragile place—and the escapist appeal of science fiction grew. Corresponding with these tumultuous events was a period of significant American economic decline, and, as Mike Ashley shows in GATEWAYS TO FOREVER, the once-enormously-popular science fiction magazines struggled to survive. The third volume of this award-winning series chronicles the publications’ most difficult period so far. The decade began with the death of John Campbell Jr., the man who launched the magazine Astonishing, and with it science fiction’s prominence as a genre. The widespread popularization of sci-fi imagery reflected a newly diversified market—new anthologies, fanzines, role-playing games, comics, and blockbuster films all fought for the attention and money of sci-fi fans. Ashley shows how the traditional magazines coped with these setbacks but also how they, as always, looked to the future, as the decade closed and the earliest precursors to the Internet emerged. Mike Ashley’s groundbreaking history is a monument to science fiction’s evolution. As the genre continues to infiltrate mainstream literature, GATEWAYS TO FOREVER is essential reading for anyone interested in seeing how it all began. Pulps 1st - New pulp cover CDs are now available! The Pulp Image Library version 5 is out with almost 21,000 pulp cover images. It's the best pulp cover reference available. There are also new versions of the SF & Fantasy, Detective & Mystery, Anthology, Western, Heroes & Villains CDs and a new Air and War CD. The pulp cover CDs can be ordered from http://www.pulps1st.com The Pulps 1st website is now updated or you can contact Mark Halegua at msh@pulps1st.com Review: If you enjoy viewing pulp cover art, then Pulp Image Library version 5 is just what you are looking for. With almost 21,000 cover images, you will spend countless hours looking at all the images on this CD. The CD contains more images in one place than you are likely to find anywhere else. Included are images from the hero pulps, sports pulps, weird menace pulps, western pulps, romance pulps, detective pulps, adventure pulps, science fiction and fantasy pulps, you name it, they are here. The pulp cover images for each pulp title are containedin a separate folder. Folders are arranged alphabetically, so locating covers for a particular title is a snap. Looking for a particular image by publication date? No problem! All files are named by the month and year of the magazine. There are folders for 903 different pulp titles, although some folders are empty awaiting the availability of images. The images themselves range in size from 144 pixels wide (the smallest I found so far) to 710 pixels (the largest I found so far). Most images seem to be in the range of 350 to 500 pixels wide, a good size for viewing. Resolution variesfrom 72 dpi to 200 dpi in the images I have viewed so far. You are probably thinking, why should I pay for a CD when I can download images off the Internet for free? The answer is simple. I have been downloading cover images off the Internet for years and I have many of the cover images that are on this CD. Some of my downloaded cover images are larger in size and/or of better quality. However, I have downloaded nowhere near 21,000 cover images and my downloaded images are not as conveniently organized. You can spend lots and lots of hours downloading and cataloging images yourself or buy this CD and start enjoying the images right away. Pulp Image Library Version 5 is a good value that is well worth the price of admission.
The Pulp Rack Spring has arrived -- by the calendar, anyway, and trees and shrubs are blooming and the grass is greening and growing around here -- but cold weather continues to lash other parts of the country that have already seen lots of bitter winter weather. In honor of the eventual thaw, I thought it would be a good idea to honor the passing winter by focusing on some cold reading. So I've recently read some pulp-related stories that touch on the theme of polar exploration. The first of these is . . .The Adventures of Captain Hatteras by Jules Verne. This isn't one of Verne's better-known novels, but it comes from early in his career and sets up some of the elements that appear in his best-known works. Why include Verne at The Pulp Rack? I explain some of my reasons for that in the essay. To summarize, many of his novels (Hatteras among them) were first published in serial form, like the pulp novels of the 20th century; also, his stories provided adventure in exotic settings in a way that served as a precursor to the pulp adventurers later published by Munsey, Street & Smith, Popular, and others. You'll find "The Adventures of Captain Hatteras: Verne Lays the Foundation for Fictional Pulp Adventures to Foreign Lands" at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/03/the_adventures.html As always, thanks for your patronage. The print debut marks a milestone for collaborators Anthony Schiavino and Jason Butkowski, who began Episodes from the Zero Hour! as a Web-based forum for serialized fiction. Volume One contains five short stories, penned by Butkowski, featuring the film-noir world of Federal City, and its most colorful resident, former boxer turned hired muscle, Tommy "Knuckles" McNichols. From the book jacket: Tommy "Knuckles" McNichols is a man who's lost it all — a once-promising prizefighter turned to a life of desperation, working as a TOUGH GUY FOR HIRE to make ends meet on the gritty streets of FEDERAL CITY. He lives on the edge of darkness, going by his own modified code of ethics in a town where reality is a punch to the gut, a bullet in the chamber of a .38, or a fifth of Jack. In a city of smoke and fog, where moral ambiguity is the norm and danger lurks around every corner, will this worn-out former boxer be able to sleep at night, knowing what he's become? And more importantly, will he be able to make the rent payment by the end of the month? The volume showcases Schiavino's book design and production, a beautiful cover by award-winning pulp illustrator Douglas Klauba, and fantastic interior illustrations from veteran comic artist Rob Davis and newcomer Jared Araujo. The Zero Hour! crew's freshman efforts are already garnering them praise from some of the established professionals in the pulp revival and comic book industries: "Man, I love these 'KNUCKLES' McNichols stories!" said Ron Fortier, author of Captain Hazzard and the Python Men of the Lost City and founder of Airship 27 Productions. "Jason Butkowski has created a true down and out original pulp character that is easy to cotton to. The stories bounce between down and out dirty street life, ala classic Noir, to humorous anecdotes that resonate with true street savvy. This is an amazing collection and if you really like pulp, you are going to love 'KNUCKLES'. All I can say, Butkowski, is more, please. Lots more!" "'KNUCKLES' will dazzle you with some humorous fancy footwork; put you on the canvas with a one-two combo of characters that are tough as nails but as human as you or me; and just when you think you've got it all figured out, deliver a couple delicious sucker punches," said Sean Ellis, author of Magic Mirror. "'KNUCKLES' is a knockout!" "In a town where life slips you a mickey and opportunity is best found at the end of a gun, Tommy 'KNUCKLES' McNichols delivers a sense of gritty, two-fisted common sense to the mean streets of Federal City. This is PULP NOIR at its BEST!" said Wayne Skiver, author of The Prof. Stone Adventures. "Butkowski has created a world to rival Miller's Sin City and a character that would be right at home downing a fifth of Jack with Spillane." "Finally! Pulp the way Pulp is supposed to be!" said comic writer Steve Niles, writer and creator of 30 Days of Night. A BLINDING FORCE PRODUCTIONS SERIALIZED FEATURE EPISODES FROM THE ZERO HOUR! The
Pulp Rack An article on Barry Windsor-Smith's The Freebooters. Although it was a comic book, it had more storytelling aspects in common with good prose pulp fiction than comics you typically see today. You'll find it here: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/03/freebooters_a_p_1.html This week's addition is another look at Ryerson Johnson: "Following the 'Traitor of the Natchez Trace'." This story first appeared in 10-Story Western in 1943. "Traitor of the Natchez Trace" is actually not a north-western. Instead, it's a frontier story — not a western, really, because it's set along the Natchez Trace (thus the title) when the Mississippi River was considered The West. I enjoy tales like this, which take place outside the typical western formula and include a bit of history or cultural information as additional narrative color to create a stronger verisimilitude. Visit this URL to read this article about the story and its ties to history: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/03/following_the_t.html And remember our Ryerson Johnson page at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2006/07/w_ryerson_johns.html As always, thanks for your patronage. BLOOD 'N' THUNDER #17 - Available next week! Subscriber copies will be mailed in batches late next week and next weekend. The theme of this issue is "behind the scenes." The lead feature is the rough draft of an unpublished Lester Dent story from 1930, "The Cowled Nemesis." Rejected twice and then shelved, it was to have been the first in a series featuring a Shadow-like avenger operating in the contemporary West. Dent's typewritten, outline/proposal for the series, will also be appearing in replica format. Will Murray provides an introduction. Continuing the theme, Mark Trost analyzes a 1936 Phantom Detective outline that never became a novel but was, instead, pillaged for themes and incidents used in two subsequent Phantom yarns. There's also a fascinating autobiographical sketch written by fantasy/SF great C. L. Moore for a 1936 fanzine. Additionally, Alfred Jan takes a look at intrepid Hollywood reporter Judith Gerard, one of the few series characters created for the spicy/girly pulps, while Neil Mechem weighs in on the desirability of autographed pulps and pulp-related books. Finally, the "Cliffhanger Classics" department features a small portfolio of behind-the-scenes photos taken on the sets of numerous Universal serials of the '30s and '40s. Additionally, Alfred Jan takes a look at intrepid Hollywood reporter Judith Gerard, one of the few series characters created for the spicy/girly pulps. And Neil Mechem weighs in on the desirability of autographed pulps and pulp-related books in "The Name Is the Game--Or Is It?" Four issue subscriptions are available for $25.

of New Mexico Press - Jack London's Tales of Cannibals and Headhunters: Nine South
Seas Stories by America's Master of Adventure - Now available! Gary Riedl, Editor Thomas R. Tietze, Editor A ship's captain, his vessel ready to explode from a fire within its cargo hold, desperately searches for a way to save his crew. A missionary in Fiji is clubbed to death by a cannibal chief to satisfy a debt of honor. A scientist agrees to have his head chopped off in return for a last glimpse of a huge alien object half-buried in the jungles of Guadalcanal. A Melanesian youth, sold into slavery, gains revenge against his sadistic white overseer. With unbridled barbarity, the crew of a European ship massacres scores of islanders. These are some of the incidents in the action-filled short stories found in Jack London's Tales of Cannibals and Headhunters. Though London's bestsellers about the frozen Northland are known to most, few readers are familiar with his tales set in the romantic and dangerous South Seas - an area of the world with which Jack London became intimate while traveling aboard his yacht, The Snark, in the first decade of the twentieth century. For the first time these stories are collected in a single volume with notes, an introduction, and an afterword that help to illuminate the racial tension of the colonial period in the Pacific. The stories are illustrated with the original artwork, several maps (including one of London's own), and photographs of the region. 6 x 9, 288 pages, 35 halftones, 4 maps, $24.95 University of New Mexico Press

Cat Books - Coming
soon! THE GHOST Lives! Wild Cat Books proudly announces THE GHOST, an upcoming pulp anthology featuring brand new stories by some of today’s most acclaimed writers of mystery, horror, and science fiction. The Ghost, a fascinating, nearly forgotten pulp hero, is magician detective George Chance, (later known as the Green Ghost), whose thrilling adventures were originally written by G.T. Fleming-Roberts, pseudonym of George Thomas Roberts, a prolific contributor to pulp magazines. As the Ghost, Chance adopts a terrifying disguise, using his superior skill as an illusionist and master escape artist, to battle the criminal Underworld.THE GHOST resurrection is the collaborative brain-child of Wild Cat founder and publisher Ron Hanna, who has been printing new editions of pulp material for over a decade, and writer/editor Martin Powell, a contributor not only to Moonstone’s eagerly awaited pulp anthologies reviving THE SPIDER, THE PHANTOM, THE AVENGER, and CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT, but was also a featured writer in KOLCHAK: The Night Stalker Chronicles, which earned a Bram Stoker nomination. “About a year ago, publisher Ron Hanna approached me with the idea of doing something new with the Ghost, an old favorite character for both of us,” Powell said. “He generously gave me the freedom to select my own writers and illustrator, and I immediately knew exactly who I wanted for the book. As busy as all of these guys are, I was genuinely surprised when every single writer that I’d hand-picked enthusiastically joined the project. Already this has been an awesome experience.” The featured “Ghost Writers” are an impressive group, including: James Chambers (The Midnight Hour), Win Scott Eckert (Tales of the Shadowmen Vol. 3), Mike Frigon (Doctor Satan), Joe Gentile (Kolchak the Night Stalker & Sherlock Holmes), Howard Hopkins (Night Demons), Christopher Mills (Femme Noir), and Powell himself. Larry Marshall (Flying Models) is on board as co-editor. Thomas L. Floyd, creator of the web-comic strip, CAPTAIN SPECTRE, has also joined THE GHOST, contributing a new painted cover and providing a series of b&w interior illustrations, as well. Hanna and Powell also hint at a major surprise within the covers of THE GHOST, yet to be announced, that they guarantee will give pulp fans a reason to celebrate. The resurrection of THE GHOST promises to be as cool a pulp publishing "event" as anything that's come before!

Bruce
Bennett - R.I.P. Bruce Bennett passed away at the age of 100 on February 24th. He died of complications from a broken hip after a fall. Bruce Bennett was Edgar Rice Burroughs' choice to play Tarzan in THE NEW ADVENTURES OF TARZAN. His performance as Tarzan remains the only film presentation that was generally true to Burroughs' novels, with the Ape Man portrayed as the sophisticated English nobleman speaking in full sentences. Bennett also played Tarzan in TARZAN AND THE GREEN GODDESS. He has appeared in more than a hundred films, dating back to the early years of talkies. For much of his career, he was credited under his birth name, Herman Brix, and he won a silver medal in the Los Angeles Olympics of 1932.

Pulp Rack Here's a review of Michael Dirda's BOUND TO PLEASE: An Extraordinary One-Volume Literary Education. A collection of "essays on great writers and their books" may not at first seem appropriate for readers of high-energy, action-blasting pulp fiction, but be warned that Michael Dirda, a longtime writer and editor for the Washington Post Book World and 1993 recipient of the Pulitzer Price for distinguished criticism, is a great promoter of genre fiction. And he's no stranger to pulp fiction, my friends. Pulp
Uncovered: How Pulp Fiction Magazines Changed America - March 15-18, 2007 A Pulp Fiction Festival Sponsored by Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island Keynote Speaker: Will Murray Cheap pulp fiction magazines of the early 1900s defied social taboos against violence, sex and bad taste. Condemned by moralists and scorned by the elite, pulp stories flaunted violence, reveled in promiscuous sex, and stereotyped just about everyone. Visit the Pulp Uncovered website at http://www.pulpuncovered.com/ For more information contact: info@pulpuncovered.com The Festival is a community event sponsored by the American studies department at Brown University and it celebrates pulp fiction magazines from the 1920s-40s. We are looking at how the art, stories, and creators of pulp magazines influenced/mirrored society and how they broke many social taboos. The Festival will take place March 15-17 in honor of the 70th anniversary of the death of HP Lovecraft, Providence's own pulpster. There will be two museum exhibits on Brown's campus: one on the action-detective pulps including Doc Savage, and another exhibit on Lovecraft and the horror pulps. Brown is working with many organizations such as the Rhode Island Historical Society, Providence Preservation Society, RISD Museum, the Providence Athenaeum and Lovecraft's old haunt the Ladd Observatory, all of which are co-sponsoring public events. For example, there will be two walking tours on different aspects of Lovecraft's life and work, we'll have a RISD Museum event talking about the art of the pulps, a Lovecraft astronomy night at the Ladd Observatory, and various lectures and panel discussions. We also have a Pulp Film Festival at the Cable Car Cinema in Providence, featuring some pulp-inspired movies and some film noir classics.

Con - May 4 thru 6, 2007! GUESTS OF HONOR: KEN KELLY & GARY GIANNI In keeping with our Conan theme, artists Ken Kelly and Gary Gianni will be our Guests of Honor this year. Among the many paperback and magazine covers Ken Kelly has painted are numerous portrayals of Conan, beginning with the Berkley paperbacks of the 1970's, while Gary Gianni has brought Conan to life in the recent Wandering Star volumes. Both have depicted numerous other REH heroes as well. ART SHOW: We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art. For the third year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (www.illustrationmagazine. com). If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us. The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons. PULP FILM FEST: Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film. We will also be showing episodes of the classic TV series, Thriller, based on stories that had originally appeared in WEIRD TALES. More info will be posted on the website closer to the con. The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (www.geocities.com/poppub/). PROGRAM BOOK: All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints. To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8'' x 6.75''), half page $40 (4 1/8'' x 3 3/8''), business card size $25 (3.25” x 2''). CON SUITE: Our con suite will operate from Friday afternoon until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby. HOTEL: For our seventh show, we’ll be in the NW suburbs of Chicago. The Sheraton is 15-20 minutes NW of O’Hare Airport. Room rates are $97/night; parking is free. For those bringing families, the Sheraton’s indoor waterpark is opening this fall, and the Sheraton is also located two miles from Woodfield Mall, which is the Chicago area’s largest mall. The hotel is 1/2 mile from the Chicago Metra train line, which runs to downtown Chicago. The hotel is also located next to Arlington Park Racecourse, the premier horse racing venue in Illinois. The con coincides with opening weekend, and on the Saturday, in addition to the regular slate of races they’ll be simulcasting the Kentucky Derby. So if you still have any money left after buying stuff at the con, you can put a few dollars down on the Derby. The hotel has complimentary transportation to and from Woodfield Mall, the train station and the track. MEMBERSHIPS: Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $15 for Sunday only. At the request of several attendees at past cons, we are, for the first time, experimenting with and offering the option of buying an Early Bird Admission for non-dealers for $60, which is a three day membership which allows entry to the dealer room on Friday at 10 a.m. (which is one hour after dealer setup begins and two hours before the con generally opens to the public). The registration form is now posted on the website with complete details. http://www.windycitypulpandpaper.com/ The bulletin board section of the website is also active, so members can join and post things of general interest regarding the convention, including sharing rides, rooms, etc. IMPORTANT SCHEDULING CHANGE! FRIDAY NIGHT PULP PARTY! Despite having booked our hotel dates and times nearly a year in advance, we've just been informed by the hotel that they've double-booked the dealer room for Friday, May 4, and we will not have access to this room until Friday evening. But would something like this deter Conan the Cimmerian? No, by Crom! And it won't deter us either! Accordingly, our Friday schedule has changed for the dealer room. We will now begin dealer set-up as soon as we can on Friday, which we currently anticipate will be between 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. It's possible that dealer set-up may be able to begin a little earlier than that; as the situation becomes clearer, we will post updates to the website. The dealer room will open to the public at 7:00 p.m. and will remain open until midnight for our Friday Night Pulp Party. We will begin our Pulp Filmfest on Friday afternoon for those arriving prior to the opening of the dealer room, and will no longer be selling Early Bird Admissions. The flier is still accurate for Saturday's and Sunday's schedules. We apologize for the late change but hope you'll still join us for a fun Friday night filled with buying and selling pulps (and telling tall tales of the ones that got away)!

Press: ALIAS "THE NIGHT WIND"
- Now available! "ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND" by Varick Vanardy Written by the “father of [serial detective] Nick Carter,” Frederic Van Rensselaer Dey, and published by the man who introduced the “pulp” magazine to the world, Frank A. Munsey, the Night Wind was a super-endowed character whose fictional life-span ran from 1913 to the early 1920s. Bingham Harvard, alias the Night Wind, used his prodigious strength (roughly 5 times that of the average man) to rescue himself, friends and family from various plots of “frame-ups,” extortion and outright physical violence. His exploits were serialized in Munsey’s THE CAVALIER and ALL-STORY WEEKLY just a few months after the appearance of Tarzan in October 1912 and wrapping up just before the first appearance of Zorro on August 1919 by the same publisher. Upon the close of a pulp magazine serial, the installments were bound and reissued in hardcover format. There were a total of four hardcover novels starring the Night Wind: ALIAS "THE NIGHT WIND", THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND, THE NIGHT WIND'S PROMISE, and LADY OF THE NIGHT WIND. In 1923 the first novel was adapted for the silent screen and released with much popular appeal as ALIAS "THE NIGHT WIND." After almost 100 years out of print, ALIAS "THE NIGHT WIND" is available again. Re-typeset - but not revised or abridged in any way, this edition comes with an informative introduction by Christopher R. Yates putting the author and character in historical context. In addition, the hardbound and paperback formats of this book sport the color cover from the original, first appearance of the Night Wind in THE CAVALIER magazine from May 10, 1913. Available now from Barnes & Noble.com, Amazon.com and Diesel eBooks in hardcover, paperback and ebook formats. Stay tuned for the pending release of the next three Night Wind titles from the original series and a new, exciting fifth installment...
