2007 Windy City Pulp and Paper Con
- May 4 thru 6, 2007! CELEBRATING WEIRD TALES AND THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF CONAN! This year marks the 75th anniversary of Robert E. Howard’s immortal pulp character, Conan of Cimmeria, and in connection with that anniversary, we’re planning a number of special displays and events centered on Conan and the pulp magazine in which he first appeared, WEIRD TALES. Please check the website for details as they’re available. GUESTS OF HONOR: KEN KELLY & GARY GIANNI In keeping with our Conan theme, artists Ken Kelly and Gary Gianni will be our Guests of Honor this year. Among the many paperback and magazine covers Ken Kelly has painted are numerous portrayals of Conan, beginning with the Berkley paperbacks of the 1970's, while Gary Gianni has brought Conan to life in the recent Wandering Star volumes. Both have depicted numerous other REH heroes as well. ART SHOW: We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art. For the third year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (www.illustrationmagazine. com). If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us. The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons. PULP FILM FEST: Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film. We will also be showing episodes of the classic TV series, Thriller, based on stories that had originally appeared in WEIRD TALES. More info will be posted on the website closer to the con. The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (www.geocities.com/poppub/). PROGRAM BOOK: All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints. To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8'' x 6.75''), half page $40 (4 1/8'' x 3 3/8''), business card size $25 (3.25” x 2''). The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 1, 2007. Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@insightbb.com for ad matters (other than payment). CON SUITE: Our con suite will operate from Friday afternoon until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby. HOTEL: For our seventh show, we’ll be in the NW suburbs of Chicago. The Sheraton is 15-20 minutes NW of O’Hare Airport. Room rates are $97/night; parking is free. For those bringing families, the Sheraton’s indoor waterpark is opening this fall, and the Sheraton is also located two miles from Woodfield Mall, which is the Chicago area’s largest mall. The hotel is 1/2 mile from the Chicago Metra train line, which runs to downtown Chicago. The hotel is also located next to Arlington Park Racecourse, the premier horse racing venue in Illinois. The con coincides with opening weekend, and on the Saturday, in addition to the regular slate of races they’ll be simulcasting the Kentucky Derby. So if you still have any money left after buying stuff at the con, you can put a few dollars down on the Derby. The hotel has complimentary transportation to and from Woodfield Mall, the train station and the track. MEMBERSHIPS: Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $15 for Sunday only. Raoul Whitfield Dennis McMillan has recently published Walter Satterthwait's DEAD HORSE, which is about pulp writer Raoul Whitfield, one of the BLACK MASK boys, whose wife died under mysterious circumstances. According to Duane Spurlock, "Whitfield was a fascinating character, and Satterthwait does a fine job of recreating the era and fleshing out the story of his wife's death. The writing, as always in a Satterthwait book, is top-notch. Great stuff all around." Thanks to Duane Spurlock for the tip!

Robert E. Howard Memorial Poetry
Slam - Saturday, January 13, 2007 The Robert E. Howard Foundation is proud to announce that the first Annual Robert E. Howard Memorial Poetry Slam will be held Saturday, January 13, 2007, at the Black Dog Tavern, 2933 Crockett Street, in Fort Worth, Texas, from 3-5 PM. Robert E. Howard loved poetry, read and wrote it his entire life, and by the time of his death had composed over 800 poetic works. His poetic voice flows through much of his prose work. REH's poetry covered a range of topics and styles, from ballads to sonnets to free verse, from humor to anger to challenge to lament. “Sponsoring a poetry event is a natural for the REH Foundation” said Paul Herman, one of the Directors of the Foundation. “Exposing people to REH's lesser known but very intense poetry, and encouraging others to actively work with poetry, it’s a win-win situation for everyone.” For basic information on what a “poetry slam” is, please refer to www.poetryslam.com. In a slight modification of the usual format, participants in each round will be allowed to perform either their own work or poetry by REH. At the end of the competition, not only will participates get a portion of the gate, the best performer will receive a $100 prize, second place will receive a $50 prize. The most "Howardesque" performance, featuring either an actual REH poem or a poem based on REH's style and themes, will also receive a $100 prize, with second place again receiving $50, for a total of $300 in prize money. The Black Dog Tavern in Fort Worth is the Metroplex' premier poetry venue, an eclectic stop that one night may have a heavy metal band, jazz the next, and a poetry slam the following night. The Black Dog is also the sponsor of one of the nation’s best slam teams, lead by the renowned Michael Guinn. And indeed, the Black Dog slam team is planning to participate in the event. For those looking to read some REH poetry, samples will be posted at the REH Foundation website, at www.rehfoundation.org. There are also several published volumes of REH poetry that can be obtained through a local library, including ALWAYS COMES EVENING, ECHOES FROM AN IRON HARP, NIGHT IMAGES, SHADOWS OF DREAMS, and SINGERS IN THE SHADOWS. A new poetry volume, RHYMES OF SALEM TOWN AND OTHER POEMS, is expected out in mid-January. For additional information, contact the Robert E. Howard Foundation at info@rehfoundation.org.

Bison Books - Coming in 2007! Back to the Stone Age by Edgar Rice Burroughs Illustrated by John Coleman Burroughs Introduction to the Bison Books edition by Gary Dunham The fifth installment of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Pellucidar series, Back to the Stone Age recounts the strange adventures of Lieutenant von Horst, a member of the original crew that sailed to Pellucidar with Jason Gridley and Tarzan who is left behind in the inner world. Horst wanders friendless and alone from one danger to the next among the Stone Age peoples, mighty reptiles, and huge animals that have been extinct on the outer crust for thousands of years. But woven among the tales of savage cave men in the country of the Basti, the hideous Gorbuses in the caverns beneath the Forest of Death, and the terrible Gaz is the story of the love this cultured hero feels for a barbarian slave girl who has spurned and discouraged him, working instead toward her own mysterious goal. 336 pages, $19.95 Land of Terror by Edgar Rice Burroughs Introduction to the Bison Books edition by Anne Harris If you have ever wondered what a civilized man of the twentieth century would do if catapulted into an Old Stone Age where huge cave bears, saber-toothed tigers, monstrous carnivorous dinosaurs, mammoths, and mastodons roamed the savage terrain, you need look no further than Land of Terror, the sixth installment of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Pellucidar series. Years ago David Innes and Abner Perry bored straight down through five hundred miles of the Earth's crust and landed in Pellucidar, the savage, primeval world that lies at the center of the Earth. This is the story of their continuing adventures in the timeless land of perpetual noon and their encounters with the hideous creatures and savage men who pursue them. Although they encounter enemies at every turn, David and Abner find a few loyal friends as they embark on exhilarating adventures. 352 pages, $19.95 Savage Pellucidar by Edgar Rice Burroughs Illustrated by J. Allen St. John Introduction by Harry Turtledove When David Innes and Abner Perry set out to search for mineral deposits in Perry's newly invented Mechanical Prospectro, they never dreamed of discovering the beautiful, terrifying world of Pellucidar five hundred miles beneath their feet. Cast into a country of fierce fighting men, beautiful women, and vicious beasts, David and Abner take sharply diverging paths. David and his mate, Dian the Beautiful, set out to teach Pellucidar the ways of civilization and succeed in gathering a number of primitive kingdoms into the Empire of Pellucidar. Meanwhile, Abner turns his inventive genius to the science of aeronautics, with dire results for both David and Dian. The seventh and final book in Edgar Rice Burroughs's Pellucidar series, Savage Pellucidar continues the epic story with a masterful blend of action, humor, and suspense. 304 pages, $19.95 Riders of the Steppes: The Complete Cossack Adventures, Volume Three by Harold Lamb Edited by Howard Andrew Jones Introduction by E. E. Knight A master of driving pace, exotic setting, and complex plotting, Harold Lamb was one of Robert E. Howard's favorite writers. BLOOD 'N' THUNDER #16 - Now available! This issue covers hard-boiled fiction and characters from the crime pulps. Monte Herridge contributes an overview of Erle Stanley Gardner's "Senor Lobo" stories from DETECTIVE FICTION WEEKLY. Will Murray offers a brief tribute to Grace Culver, the feisty female detective who plied her trade in a series of short stories for THE SHADOW MAGAZINE. Gary Lovisi documents Britain's post-World War II boom in hard-boiled crime digests. And Alfred Jan quotes the fulsome praise for detective pulps offered by world-class philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who had a special fondness for yarns written by BLACK MASK alumnus Norbert Davis. The legendary BLACK MASK figures in three other articles as well. In a 1929 piece penned for WRITER'S DIGEST, long-time literary agent August Lenniger interviews MASK editor Joseph T. Shaw, analyzes an entire issue on a story-by-story basis, and offers tips for aspiring authors. We've also reprinted E. R. Hagemann's excellent 1981 article on the making of THE HARD-BOILED OMNIBUS, "Cap" Shaw's 1946 anthology of classic MASK stories. Finally, in this issue's installment of "Pulp Page to Silver Screen," BnT editor Ed Hulse weighs in on the 1937 screen adaptation of Frederick Nebel's MacBride & Kennedy series from the MASK. Click here or on the image at the right for a larger cover image. Single issues are $6 plus $1.50 postage and handling. Four issue subscriptions are available for $25. Press - Now available! AT THE EARTH'S CORE by Edgar Rice Burroughs ERB Press is proud to present the unedited First Edition Hardcover book text and illustrations (by J. Allen St. John) of this classic Inner Earth novel. David Innes and his inventor friend, when they sought to test the practicability of their "subterranean prospector" made an amazing discovery. The two men pierced through the Earth's crust and found, instead of a core in a highly molten and gaseous state, a world, with living, breathing, functioning humans and animals, but a world still in the Stone Age. The hair-breadth escapes of the two men, the weird monsters encountered, the touch of romance and the manner of telling make this one of Burroughs' very best. Hardcover with dust jacket $24.95 PELLUCIDAR by Edgar Rice Burroughs ERB Press is proud to present the unedited First Edition Hardcover book text and illustrations (by J. Allen St. John) of this classic Inner Earth novel, a sequel to AT THE EARTH'S CORE. A traveler stretching his rug for the night on the warm sands of the Sahara, heard an intermittent ticking sound from the earth beneath his head. Digging, he unearthed a small box from which a small cable ran straight down into the sand. It contained a telegraph instrument. Thus was revealed the story set forth in this book -- the story of the adventures of David Innes in the vast horizonless country of Pellucidar, where the noonday sun shines perpetually and there is no time; and in the Land of Awful Shadows, screened by a pendent world, where the sun has never shone. And the story, too, of the search for Dian the Beautiful, and of the strange empire established by David Innes on the inside of the world we live on. Hardcover with dust jacket $24.95 BEYOND THIRTY by Edgar Rice Burroughs ERB Press is proud to present the unedited First Edition Hardcover book text of this futuristic novel, detailing what occurred over 200 years after the Great War. COLUMBIA PICTURES TEAMS WITH PRODUCERS
SAM RAIMI, JOSH DONEN (Culver City, Ca
December 8, 2006) The Shadow, the legendary Conde Nast comic book character,
will come to the big screen from Columbia Pictures and producers Sam Raimi and
Josh Donen of Buckaroo Entertainment and Michael Uslan of Comic Book Movies, LLC/Branded
Entertainment, it was announced today by Matt Tolmach and Doug Belgrad, Presidents
of Production for Columbia Pictures. AND MICHAEL USLAN TO BRING THE SHADOW TO THE SCREEN The screenplay is being written by Siavash Farahani. CBM/Branded¹s FJ DeSanto will co-produce the film. Sam Dickerman is overseeing development of the movie for Columbia Pictures. Often credited by Bob Kane, the creator of Batman, as the biggest influence on his creation of The Dark Knight, The Shadow was created in 1930 on what would become perhaps the most popular dramatic radio program in history. Early 30s star and radio personality Orson Welles popularized The Shadow's catchphrase, "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" The phenomenal success of the radio show was closely followed by Street & Smith's publication of 'The Shadow Magazine,' written by Walter Gibson under the penname 'Maxwell Grant.' Street & Smith would go on to publish 325 Shadow pulp novels. With further triumphs as a newspaper comic strip, comic books, and merchandising, The Shadow arrived in Hollywood via a string of cliff-hanging movie serials and features variously starring Victor Jory, Kane Richmond and Rod LaRoque. A 1994 feature starred Alec Baldwin. Over the years, Shadow comic books and graphic novels have been published by Street & Smith, Archie, Dark Horse, Marvel, and, most notably, DC Comics. Raimi says, "I've been a passionate Shadow fan ever since I was a kid and have long dreamed of bringing this character to the screen." Tolmach adds, "We're thrilled to be re-teaming with Sam as he brings another legendary comic-book character to a new generation of fans. This property is in the perfect hands." Uslan says, "My first comic-book writing gig in the 70s was writing for DC's Shadow comics. I had the chance to spend time with Walter Gibson and derive my understanding of the character directly from the original source himself. Working with Sam, Josh, and the entire team at Columbia, I know I am working with the Shadow Dream Team." Donen says, "We envision building a strong, character-driven, plot-intensive story filled with mystery and action that establishes a Shadow true to its roots and unlike any way he¹s been presented in the past." Jerry Birenz, Counsel to Conde Nast, says, "Conde Nast has had a number of important filmmakers and companies approach us over the past few years, but only this team, as proven by the fact they have so successfully brought characters to the screen who are the crown jewels -- the life-blood -- of their respective comic book companies, has the incredible passion and experience to reignite and re-imagine The Shadow for a new generation. It doesn¹t get better than knowing our film is in the talented hands of producer Sam Raimi." Thanks to Anthony Tollin for sending the press release!

Baen Books - A new Spider reprint series really does appear to be on the
way! Two complete novels in one volume of the adventures of the mysterious masked crime fighter known as "The Spider," hunted by the underworld and the police alike. In one, the Spider battles an army of giant robots that has New York City under siege-a storyline so fraught with action and peril, that the very creators of Superman had borrowed it for one of the Man of Steel's comic strip adventures. It also was the inspiration for the major motion picture, "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow." In the second novel, the spider battles a criminal mastermind who threatens the entire northeast with thousands of poison-fanged vampire bats unless his terms are met. Can even the Spider-hunted by the law as never before after faked evidence has branded him as the master of the killer bats-unmask the identity of the Vampire King before thousands die horribly? None of the above states precisely what titles are being reprinted, but from the description, the likely source titles are: 1) The Spider #75: "Satan's Murder Machines," by Norvell Page, originally published in December 1, 1939 2) The Spider #26: "Death Reign of the Vampire King," by Norvell Page, originally published November 1, 1935 Trade Paperback , 316 pages, $15, Ships on or around June 5 Simon & Schuster Amazon.com Big thanks Mike Chomko for the original tip and to Chris Yates for discovering the details! | Cover by STERANKO! |

Their own buildings, dedicated to Mark Twain, the Pony Express, etc. and having befriended the head folks in charge Wayne has scored one of the new building spaces to become: "The Lester Dent Museum of Pulp History"! There will be a big primary Dent/Doc display but the rest of the space will be dedicated to ALL Pulps. Construction begins this spring. Wayne will keep us updated and will be asking for donations come warmer weather! This is very exciting! The first museum dedicated solely to Pulps! Thanks to Wayne Skiver for the news and the hard work!

Tarzan - New feature film in the works! Warner Bros. and producer Jerry Weintraub are bringing Tarzan back to the bigscreen. The studio is developing a new take on the Edgar Rice Burroughs-created character. Studio is negotiating with Guillermo del Toro to direct. John Collee, who wrote "Master and Commander: Far Side of the World" and most recently scripted the WB animated hit "Happy Feet," is negotiating to write the screenplay. Del Toro, who grew up reading Spanish-language translations of those books, feels that the classic themes are still compelling, and that there is new ground to cover in the Tarzan mythology by turning back to the original Burroughs prose. "I'd love to create a new version that is still a family movie, but as edgy as I can make it," Del Toro said. "There are strong themes of survival of a defenseless child left behind in the most hostile environment." Deals are still being worked out, but Del Toro sparked to the chance to collaborate with Collee. "John will be writing it alone, as I'll be in production on 'Hellboy 2' and pursuing writing projects of my own," Del Toro said. "He's got a great sense of adventure and the wilderness." Wild Cat Books - Captain Hazzard #3 is coming in 2007! Get ready for more Captain Hazzard adventure coming your way next year from Wild Cat Books. After taking on the revival of this classic pulp hero, Ron Fortier learned that a second Captain Hazzard had been written back in 1938. After the magazine folded after its first issue, the editors shelved the second yarn. Experts believe it, like the first Hazzard adventure, was written by Paul Chadwick. At this time, Chadwick was writing Secret Agent X for the same company and suggested changing the unused Hazzard novel into an Agent X yarn. And so was born THE CURSE OF THE CRIMSON HORDE. Ron Fortier has taken up the challenge of turning THE CURSE OF THE CRIMSON HORDE back into a Captain Hazzard book! Ron rewrote the whole thing, much as he had done with the first Hazzard book, PYTHON MEN OF THE LOST CITY. The book is now finished and early next year WCB will be publishing; CAPTAIN HAZZARD - CURSE OF THE RED MAGGOT. Source: The Pulp Factory

Street and Smith
Pulp Characters to star
in feature film! IGN Filmforce
is reporting that several Street and Smith pulp heroes will be brought to life
on the big-screen courtesy of none other than filmmaker Sam Raimi (DARK MAN and SPIDER-MAN). The project will reportedly unite a number
of pulp heroes from Street and Smith Publications. Characters that would be included
in the film are Doc Savage, The Shadow, and The Avenger, and quite possibly other
(or all) major Street and Smith characters. Additional sources advised that Raimi
is directing the project, which IGN Filmforce was told would be written by a screenwriter
named Siavash Farahani.
For the complete story on the IGN Filmforce website, click here.Ain't It Cool News does not dispute the IGN Filmforce report, but they do have a call in to Sam Raimi for confirmation. There has been no official announcements in The Hollywood Reporter or Variety as yet that I have seen. Ain't It Cool News says that Raimi's biggest passion from the Street and Smith catalogue is THE SHADOW and that prior to the movie with Alec Baldwin, Raimi was attempting to get the property at Universal with the Coen Brothers set to write it up for him to direct. That fell through and he made DARKMAN instead. In the last year or so, Ain't It Cool News heard that Raimi has been taking meetings with various directors to discuss a possible DOC SAVAGE film and that Raimi had found a writer for his THE SHADOW movie, but that no commitments were in hand yet. Ain't It Cool News posits that Raimi may have optioned all the Street and Smith characters just to obtain rights to THE SHADOWand get his film made. Ain't It Cool News knows for a fact that THE SHADOW and DOC SAVAGE were being developed as separate projects at least 4 months ago and will continue to knock on Raimi's door to get to the truth. More on this when it becomes available.

Anthony Tollin's Sanctum Productions and
Nostalgia Ventures Inc Schedule Update! THE SHADOW #3 and DOC SAVAGE #2 will be shipping
from the printer next week! Originally, THE SHADOW #3
and DOC SAVAGE #2 were to ship in November with December being
a skip month. Nostalgia Ventures wanted to try a different printer for THE SHADOW #3 and DOC SAVAGE #2 that was closer to NV's Midwest warehouse. The printer said they had a turnaround time of 3-4 weeks when the digital files were overnighted to them on October 18. Unfortunately, they later said the books would not be ready until December 15 and claimed heavy Christmas book volume as the reason for the delay. THE SHADOW #3 and DOC SAVAGE #2 will be shipping to subscribers and dealers before Xmas! Sanctum Productions and Nostalgia Ventures have
announced that they are returning to their
original printer for THE SHADOW #4 and DOC SAVAGE #3. THE SHADOW #4 and DOC SAVAGE #3 will
be shipping by mid-January as originally planned. SHADOW #4 is a radio theme issue in which:
The features for THE SHADOW #4 and DOC SAVAGE #3 are completed. THE SHADOW #4 was already shipped to the printer and DOC SAVAGE #3 is complete pending proofreading corrections. Thanks to the generosity of Sanctum Productions, I was provided a sneak peek at the special features contained in DOC SAVAGE #2 and THE SHADOW #4, and can testify that they are indeed complete! These both look to be great issues!

Leanta Books - Pre-orders can now be placed! Leanta's January project, Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan of the Apes is well underway and is proceeding on schedule. The Burroughs community is very excited about David Burton's illustrationsfor this classic story. Edgar Rice Burroughs is most famous for his stories about the young boy lost in the jungle and raised by a tribe of apes. Though the world knew little about Africa at the time when these stories were written, Burroughs in fact got many of his theoretical ideas absolutely correct about apes and their ways of living. Now, after many years of reprints in standard paperback format with average cover artwork and little to no illustration, David Burton and Leanta Books bring to you this re-imagining of one of the most beloved stories of all time!

Sheena, Queen of the Jungle - Coming in
March from Devil's Due Comics! Devil's Due has announced that they have secured the comic book rights to Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. Created in 1937 by Will Eisner and Jerry Iger, Sheena was the first female comic book heroine to have her own title in the spring of 1942, predating Wonder Woman. At Devil's Due, the property will be under the creative direction of filmmakers Paul (The Spirit, Sheena) Aratow and Steven E. (Die Hard) de Souza. According to Devil’s Due President Josh Blaylock: "Sheena is arguably the first female super-hero, predating even Wonder Woman. Of course, thanks in part to her outfits, which were quite racy for the times, she was very popular with young boys throughout the '30s and 40's. Our modern Sheena lives between two worlds, one of high society and big business and one of the jungle where it's every man for himself, the two of which can be more similar than expected. She is the heiress to a billion dollar empire run by her very shrewd, sometimes malicious grandfather. It was his very business practices in South America that drove her father to leave the family trade, at which time a plane containing both he and Sheena crashed on the way home to New York City, where the father died and Sheena was thought dead. When she's found years later the real story begins. The dynamic between her and her grandfather is very tense and cutting, as they are both each other's family, yet secretly their respective nemesis. Sheena's still a blonde bombshell like in the old days, but being that we're setting this in South America, and with her family having ties to the area, this will be a more Latina Sheena than we've seen before." Devil's Due will launch Sheena with a 99-Cent Sheena Preview Special in March by Robert Rodi with de Souza and Aratow, with pencils by Steven Cummings, and two covers by Tim Seely. The publisher plans to launch their first Sheena limited series in June. For the full news article, visit Newsarama.
THE SKY PEOPLE by S.M. Stirling -
New pulp era tale in the spirit of ERB! From Publishers Weekly: Starred Review. For this rollicking first of an alternate history series, Stirling (Island in the Sea of Time) uses the terrific premise that Mars and Venus are exactly as depicted in pulp-era SF, eerily Earth-like and populated by prehistoric people and creatures. When 1960s space probes find that Venus is habitable, the Americans and Russians scramble to set up colonies and get in good with the natives. In 1988, a Russian rocket crashes in the wilderness and can only be reached by an airship from the U.S. Commonwealth base of Jamestown, crewed by a classic love triangle: Ranger Lt. Marc Vitrac, Harlem-born geologist Cynthia Whitlock and ultra-British anthropologist Christopher Blair. Stirling doesn't stint on old-fashioned elements, most notably the gorgeous native princess with magical powers, but the multiculturalism sidesteps most stereotypes while retaining a broad-brush pulp sensibility; the science is refreshingly realistic; and everyone cusses (sometimes in awkward translation). Readers will eagerly anticipate a trip to Mars in the sequel, "In the Halls of the Crimson Kings." Preview online at Amazon.com Hardcover, TOR Books, 304 pages, SRP: $24.95

Bison Books - Coming in May 2007! PULP WRITER, a memoir by Paul S. Powers with biographical essays by his granddaughter, Laurie Powers. Powers wrote under at least eight pseudonyms, published hundreds of short stories and novellas in pulp magazines, and lived a life at times as outrageous as his fiction. PULP WRITERtells of Paul S. Powers’s travels from serious literary ambitions to the pages of WILD WEST WEEKLY, of his seeking his fortune (or material, at any rate) in the ghost towns and mining camps of Colorado, and of his life in Arizona and California as he reaped the rewards of his wildly successful WILD WEST WEEKLY characters such as Sonny Tabor and Kid Wolf. Extending from the Great Depression to the golden age of the pulps, Powers’s career, chronicled here in often laugh-out-loudstyle, is an American success story of true grit and commercial savvy and of a larger-than-life character with questionable but endlessly entertaining Western lore to spare. In the process, he provides a valuable and rarely-chronicled look at the business of writing and publishing pulp fiction during its golden years. Powers’s granddaughter Laurie never knew her grandfatherand lost touch with his side of the family. In her biographical essays, she finds her lost family and discovers the Pulp Writer manuscript. Her essays also provide a valuable historical context for pulp publicationssuch as WILD WEST WEEKLY and their importance during the Great Depression. Paul S. Powers (1905–71) was a writer of pulp westerns for twenty years and the author of Doc Dillahay, published by Macmillan in 1949. McFarland:
PULP MAGAZINE HOLDINGS DIRECTORY - Coming in 2007! Sometime spring/summer 2007, McFarland will be publishing PULP MAGAZINE HOLDINGS DIRECTORY by Jess Nevins. This is an alphabetical list of pulps accompanied by their library holdings--that is, which issues of which pulps are held in which libraries. This work is a comprehensive index of American pulp magazines. Entries are organized alphabetically by magazine title, and offer bibliographic data including author, volume/issue numbers, dates of publication, publisher, and a brief categorization. Each entry also includes a helpful list of current library holdings, if any, among American, Canadian, and European libraries. According to Nevins, "I wrote the book because, as a researcher,I needed something like this, but also because there are some libraries that have a surprisingly large set of pulps in their collection, like the Denver Public Library, and few people know about it. So the book will be useful to both researchers and casual fans of the pulps, I think." Softcover,$49.95

The Wraith: VALLEY OF EVIL - Now available for pre-order! Undoubtedly the inheritor of master pulp novelist Norvell Page's skill and proficiency, Frank Dirscherl returns to spin another thrilling tale of The Wraith and his world. After the horror the Cobra unleashed upon Metro City, Paul Sanderson has recuperated, regained his strength and focus, and the city has been rebuilt; while its citizens have slowly started to regroup and move forward. Into this relative calm marches Ma Tzi, the Hong Kong drug lord, who senses a weakness in resident crime lord Robert Latham's hold on the city, and intends to exploit that, in any way necessary. At any cost. In the midst of their vicious gang war, a new terror envelopes the city - a virulent plague wipes out thousands, a plague that The Wraith soon discovers to be man-made. With no end in sight, and his assistant Max Horton missing, can The Wraith stop Latham and Tzi from further carnage, save countless lives and find those responsible for the heinous slaughter of untold innocents? VALLEY OF EVIL has it all - heroism, romance, action, thrills, tragedy, and is surely Dirscherl at the height of his storytelling powers.
