SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY AND WEIRD FICTION (1890-2004)
by STEPHEN T. MILLER and WILLIAM G. CONTENTO

This is the most comprehensive index ever published of contributions to magazines in the field of fantastic literature (speculative fiction including science fiction, fantasy and weird fiction). "It is so comprehensive that it cannot be surpassed, it can only be supplemented," writes Sam Moskowitz in his Foreword to this "fabulous guide."

"Few fields have been more remarkably indexed than science fiction and fantasy," he adds. "This compendium, of course, updates all previous such bibliographies, and prints complete contents in chronological order as well as by author and title. But where it stands utterly unique is, in addition, recording the contents of perhaps hundreds of semi-professional and amateur publications which carried an important regimen of fantasy fiction."

This mammoth index - actually, there are five separate indexes - Author, Title, Artist, Series and Contents - is being issued as a set of eight volumes. Indexed are contributions to 1,120 different magazine titles, a total of 15,818 separate issues, with contributions by 25,911 writers. Indexed are 103,171 stories and serial segments, 20,463 poems, and 39,939 articles and columns.

Here is a bird's-eye view of this mammoth undertaking:

* Each volume measures 8.5" x 11" and is red, white or blue buckram with gold leaf lettering
* Each page is double- or triple-columned and highly readable
* Set of 8 volumes, to a total of 3950 pages
* Total number of words: 4.1 million
* Author Index: Volumes 1, 2 and 3 (red buckram)
* Title, Artist & Serial Indexes: Volumes 4 and 5 (white buckram)
* Content Index: Volumes 6, 7 and 8 (blue buckram)
* 276 page Checklist of SF Magazine Index available as paperback edition.
"In all of science fiction history there is nothing like this index," co-compiler Stephen T. Miller explains in his Preface.
"You will find magazines here that can be found no place else. We give you data on magazines that were never published
but that were assembled. We cover the rarest of the rare and the obscurest of the obscure. Ashcan issues do exist and are
indexed here. Important rare fanzines are listed. It's all here."
The publication of this set of indexes is a landmark occasion.
Its appearance marks a milestone in the scholarship and bibliography of science fiction, fantasy, and weird fiction.

BLOOD 'N' THUNDER #8 - Now available!
Issue #8, dated Fall 2004, is an extensive tribute to prolific pulpster and novelist Frederick C. Davis, who wrote the adventures of such popular characters as Operator #5 and the Moon Man, plus hundreds of other stories in the detective/mystery, aviation, Western, and weird-menace genres. The issue begins with an overview of the author's career by Davis scholar Garyn Roberts, who co-edited THE NIGHT NEMESIS, a 1985 collection of Moon Man stories plus the newly released THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF THE MOON MAN. For a look at Davis, the man, there will be a lengthy interview with his son, Rick Davis, and granddaughter, Karen Cunningham. They provide valuable insights into FCD's personality, work habits, and influences. Davis himself reveals some of his writing secrets in an article reprinted from a 1941 issue of WRITER'S DIGEST. Finally, what is believed to be a complete Davis bibliography, listing many hundreds of pulp stories as well as several dozen hardcover novels and non-fiction magazine appearances, will also appear. The Davis tribute is illustrated with candid photos of the author, B&W illustrations that accompanied his pulp stories, and a plethora of pulp covers from issues containing FCD yarns. Filling out the issue will be Rodney Schroeter's in-depth report on this year's Windy City Pulp and Paperback Show, including comments by 2004 Guest-of-Honor and legendary science-fiction author and editor, Frederik Pohl.

THE BLOODY CROWN OF CONAN - A message from Del Rey Books!
We're about a month away from the release of the next trade paperback, THE BLOODY CROWN OF CONAN, and I just saw the loose pages last week. They look GREAT! Gary's artwork looks as terrific as ever, and the paintings adapted to black and white brilliantly. Thank Crom for a first-class production department like we have here at Del Rey.

Remember the challenge, though. The book hits stores Tuesday, November 23, and all you Howard fans need to lay siege to your local book store. Buy your copies as soon as you can after Nov. 23. If you all hit the stores at once, we have a shot at getting onto the New York Times bestseller list. Won't that freak out the literary types!

There are a lot of book stores out there that only sell the bestsellers, so when BLOODY CROWN hits the list, hundreds of new stores will have to carry it. I think it's only actual "brick and mortar" stores--not the online stores--that report to the Times list, but if you've ordered from an online store, don't worry--that'll help, too. The higher we go on the online ratings, the more buzz we'll generate. So it's all good.

Men's Adventure Magazines in Postwar America - Now available!
MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES IN POSTWAR AMERICA is by Max Allan Collins, George Hagenauer, Steven Heller, and Richard Oberg.  Publisher: Taschen Press.  512 pages.  List price: $39.99.

Battling dangerous beasts such as ferocious lions, venomous snakes, or swarms of man-eating weasels, the hunky heroes of men's adventure magazines were frequently depicted struggling to protect themselves and especially their buxom female companions from the gruesome tragic ends that threatened their every waking moment. Whether stranded on desert islands, clashing with motorcycle gangs, or shackled in prison camps, the magazines' male and female protagonists were perpetually fighting their ways out of dangerous predicaments. To pay homage to the American periodicals of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s that "documented" such outrageous exploits, TASCHEN brings you this hefty, comprehensive guide packed full of colorful cover art, sumptuous sample spreads, and enlightening essays. With an in-depth introductory essay describing the history, culture, and artistry of men's adventure-a.k.a. "sweat"-magazines, as well as chapter-by-chapter exploration of various subjects including the role of women and the portrayal of Nazis and Communists, this definitive study of the genre examines not only the popular appeal of the magazines but also their social and political implications. Also included are publisher listings and profiles of artists and writers, as well as an interview with Norm Eastman, one of the genre's most important artists.

The Nebulon Horror
A small town, an old house, and an evil legacy that became...The Nebulon Horror.

The Evil
He lives in the mountains, in the jungles of Haiti: Margal, the bocor, the Legless one. Crippled, unable to move, Margal moves you instead, speaks to your mind, commands you to act. There are no doors you can lock to keep the Evil out, no barriers he cannot breach. He calls to those needs, and they must obey, you must obey the whispers in your mind, and the visions he causes to appear...

Shades of Evil
The mist rose out of the lake, a slow white swirl stark agains the night. It took shape, changed shape--a bird, a snake, a woman. It floated, searching for something, and not finding, killed randomly.

May 2005
Cloth: ISBN 0-9748789-7-9: $40.00
Paper: ISBN 0-9748789-8-7: $20.00
A self-proclaimed "mechanistic materialist," Lovecraft took an unremittingly scientific view of reality. This perspective informed the whole of his literary output, but is nowhere so clearly seen as in this assemblage of his writings on science. Beginning with the scientific journals, treatises and astronomy columns of HPL's early years, and continuing throughout his life, these writings illuminate Lovecraft's thought in a unique, and until now, largely unappreciated way. As a bonus, almost two-dozen of HPL's hand lettered star maps are reproduced.

THE BOOK OF THE KALEMS
Edited by Mara Kirk Hart and S. T. Joshi
To Be Announced
We have reached an agreement with Mara Kirk Hart, daughter of H. P. Lovecraft's associate George Kirk, to publish a selection of her father's correspondence related to the Kalem Club, the New York literary group centering around Lovecraft and so named because all the members' surnames began either with K, L, or M. Besides George Kirk's correspondence, THE BOOK OF THE KALEMS, co-edited by Mara Kirk Hart and S. T. Joshi, also includes writings by each of the group's members, George Kirk, Rheinhart Kleiner, Arthur Leeds, H. P. Lovecraft, Samuel Loveman, Everett McNeil, and James Morton. This ties in well with our release of the works of Loveman, and next year, the correspondence between Lovecraft and Kleiner. More details will follow soon.

How I Discovered Doc Savage
In honor of the 40th anniversary of Bantam publishing Doc Savage paperbacks it was decided that a commemorative souvenir book would be created.  Notable Doc Savage fans from around the world contributed their stories and it was planned that the book would cut off when it reached 50 pages.  Well, the floodgates opened and the stories poured in.   Unfortunately, not everyone's story was published when the book began to reach an unwieldy thickness.

Volume One turned out to be 92 pages and contains fabulous stories of discover from the following contributors:  Ron Wilcoxen, Howard Wright, Arthur Sippo, Rob Smalley, Glenn Horner, Jeff Deischer, Michael Timpani, Lance Curry, Bill Smith, Paul Cook, John P. Peterson, Ron Hill, Courtney Rogers, Pat Lilja, Don White, Joe Koomen, Jay Ryan, Greg Surman, Frank J. Burgett, Miranda Burgett, Juan Herrero, Bob Jenson, Dave Taggart, Rick Brooks, Philip Schweier, Tahir Bhatti, James L Patterson II, Terry Alan Klasek, Elizabeth Degn, Larry Burbridge, Joe Schleyhahn, Charley Albers, John Lebel, Howard Hopkins, Prof Dr. V. Stosic, Joe Thoms, Andrew Henry, Peter Wrobel, John Simpson, David Pettus, Thomas Fortenberry, Will Murray.

The project was a remarkable success and I would like to personally thank the forty-two Doc fans that participated.

The last of the "How I Discovered Doc Savage" souvenir books have been mailed and by now should have been received by everyone who participated in the project except those people who will be attending Doc Con VII.

Now we begin the job of compiling Volume Two of  HIDDS and we already have some remarkable contributors including Lohr McKinstry, Ron Ely and a special story published with PJ Farmers permission.  If you were not aware or missed out on contributing to volume one, now is your chance to join the fun.  Stories are generally half a page to two pages in length.  We will cut off taking contirbutions to Volume Two after we receive forty stories, so don't deley.

Following Doc Con VII on November 6, 2004 we will reprint just enough copies of Volume One to mail to those people who order copies.

He has come to be regarded as the leading American writer of horror fiction in this century and continues to be a major influence upon the field today; but his life, work, and thought remain poorly understood, and many myths about the man and his work persist. In this, the first full-scale biography in more than twenty years, S. T. Joshi--the leading authority on Lovecraft--has gone back to primary sources to set the record straight on the many-faceted "gentleman from Providence": his early interests in science, mythology, and literature; his involvement in the "amateur journalism" movement; his towering presence in the pulp magazines of the 1920s and the fantasy fandom of the 1930s; and the posthumous rescue of his work by friends and devotees. Along the way, Joshi probes the literary, philosophical, cultural, and historical forces that shaped Lovecraft's work and thought, provides capsule portraits of his close friends and colleagues, and studies the growth and development of all aspects of his creative work. Written from a sympathetic but critical perspective, Joshi's biography dispels many of the myths about Lovecraft the man and win new converts to his distinctive literary work.

James Bond 21
CommanderBond.Net reports that Pierce Brosnan has confirmed that not only is he not going to return to the role of James Bond, but he was in fact fired from the part.  "It's over, it's over, it's absolutely over. They invited me back right before I went to present that film. We're so happy with the success, we want you to come back!' I went on the road as a happy man, you know. I thought we'd get a fifth and no more. That would be it, really." said Brosnan.  "Then one day the phone rang - I was here (in Nassau shooting After the Sunset) - and my agents told me that the goal posts had moved and that they had changed their minds. It was disappointing. It was surprising. And I accepted the knowledge (that his run as 007 was over for good) after 24 hours of being in shock" he continued.  Brosnan claimed he harbours no bitterness though. "None, none, none! It's not worth having. If I did, it would make all the great decade, the four films, the lovely success, meaningless. Bitterness against whom, and for what reason?".

King Conan: Crown of Iron
IGN FilmForce has been advised by sources that, while King Conan: Crown of Iron has been stewing in development hell at Conan Properties, Inc. and Warner Brothers, writer-director John Milius is on the move.  Milius is currently in Turkey where he has secured full funding for King Conan. If that's the case, that would mean Warner Brothers would only have to distribute the film rather than finance it.

IGN FilmForce was also advised that Milius is currently scouting locations in Turkey with some of Conan's private financiers. When filming might begin remains unclear but at least the money is now in place.  Furthermore, Arnold Schwarzenegger may still be involved with the project. Everything depends, however, on whether the Governator runs for re-election but the door for his return is apparently still open.

The Legend of Zorro
Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have returned to the franchise which helped make their careers - 1998's "The Mask of Zorro" - by shooting the sequel in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, through December.

USA Today reveals that in "The Legend of Zorro" directed by Martin Campbell ("Goldeneye", "The Mask of Zorro"), dashing Alejandro and sultry Elena are married and have a 10-year-old son, Joaquin (Adrian Alonso), who knows nothing of his dad's secret swashbuckling identity.  Besides, the missus would be thrilled if Mr. Z kept his sword sheathed once and for all. But when greedy villains threaten to halt California's statehood, it's Zorro to the rescue once again. Zeta-Jones insist their character's passion is still flaming - "Being married has only enhanced their feelings for each other". The actress has to retrain a bit for her swordfighting skills. The paper also has the first picture from the movie seen to the right.

FANTASY COMMENTATOR - New issue now available!
FANTASY COMMENTATOR #57/58 is now available.  This issue is a perfect bound softcover (double-issue) extravaganza on the life and works of  Fritz Leiber. A. Langley Searles was gracious enough to collect TWENTY essays exploring the worlds, character and themes of  Leiber's fiction, as well as articles delving into his personal life.

From all over the world, fans and admirers of the late and great Fritz Leiber have come together and delivered some of the best pieces to date regarding the author. Some are recent, written by the hands of newcomers whom wish to pay their respects to one of their favourite authors by writing their first critical piece on Leiber. Many, however, were written long ago - forgotten and buried beneath a horde of books, magazines, and fanzines  labelled as out of print, rare, and, alas, forgotten in some circles.
Ben Szumskyj exhaustively hunted down these essays of yesteryear, acquiring their original appearances and tracking down the authors who penned them.
Essays/articles are by John Howard, Michael E. Stamm, Stefan  Dziemianowicz,  Curtis Shumaker, Bruce Byfield, Justin Leiber, Rosemary Pardoe,  Michael  Barrett, S. T. Joshi, Don Lee,  John Langan, and Edward P. Berglund.

Copies can be bought directly from
A. Langley Searles for $12 (postpaid in the U.S.; foreign orders add $3), at the following address:  A. Langley Searles, 48 Highland Circle, Bronxville, NY 10708-5909

Thanks to Terry Allen for posting this in the REH Comics Newsgroup.

Janet Leigh
Actress Janet Leigh died at the age of 77, a family spokeswoman said on Monday, October 4th.
Leigh "died peacefully in her home on Sunday afternoon" in Beverly Hills with her husband, Robert Brandt, and her actress daughters, Jamie Lee Curtis  and Kelly Curtis, at her side, the spokeswoman said.  Leigh had been battling vasculitis -- an inflammation of the blood vessels -- for a year.  Leigh is best known for the first 45 minutes of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film "Psycho" as she plays office worker and embezzler Marion Crane who stops for the night at the Bates Motel where in minutes she is slashed to death in a shower by a man dressed up as his mother -- Anthony Perkins playing motel keeper Norman Bates.

ShadowPDF - News update!
While new Shadows are something we cannot offer, and the newest Amazon Anne is still a little ways from being posted, I wanted to let everyone in on some news.  My second western has just been published.  SADDLED FOR VENGEANCE (as by Clay Burnham) is available through AmazonUK at the following address:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0709075324/qid%3D1097008049/202-1171670-1595863

Less pastoral than VALLEY OF HATE, VENGEANCE begins with the hanging of a desperado, Link Hardmun, a man whose only desire is to find and kill the outlaw responsible for the murders Hardmun is about to die for.  Fortune intervenes and gives Hardmun his chance.  As he tramps across the cracked and sweltering desert in pursuit of the real killer he himself is hunted – the target of the outlaws, an indefatigable bounty hunter, and the sister of one of the murder victims.  Along this blistering, deadly journey Hardmun examines his misspent life and dares to dream about redemption.

SADDLED FOR VENGEANCE is a hard-hitting, fast-riding yarn with explosive, violent action and deep characterization.  It is published by Robert Hale Ltd, London.

Response to
VALLEY OF HATE in this group was excellent and I thank everyone for their kind words and support.  I hope some of you will try SADDLED FOR VENGEANCE.

Soon I’ll have the full first chapter up on the Clay Burnham website.  In the meantime, visit http://www.blackhorsewesterns.com and click on the link for Black Horse Express to read the second issue of a free online magazine written by Black Horse writers.  Part of the first chapter to
SADDLED FOR VENGEANCE is included.  In all, there are about 10 articles on the west, writing, and the publisher.  We also include links to all the recent titles and previews of many titles.

No word yet on the Destroyer anthology (in which I supposedly have a story).  I’ll update you as information comes in

Steve Holland's THE TRIALS OF HANK JANSON
Steve Holland's THE TRIALS OF HANK JANSON
(Telos Publishing) has been short listed for the Crime Writers' Association's Gold Dagger Award for Non-Fiction. The CWA awards recognize the best in crime and thriller writing. The winners will be announced at the Crime Writers' Association Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, November 9, 2004, in London.

THE TRIALS OF HANK JANSON
presents a full biography of that author – in reality, a man named Stephen D Frances – from his early life, through the highs and lows he experienced with the Janson novels, to his eventual decline and death in Spain, cut off from the character he had created.  Frances capitalised on the post-war ban on paperback imports from America by creating his own American hero, Hank Janson, a reporter on the Chicago Chronicle whose violent, sexy adventures sold 8 million copies in five years.

The risqué covers and breathless encounters with blondes, brunettes and red-heads made Hank Janson compulsive reading – at his height the books sold 4,000 copies a day. But the heady mixture of sex and violence led to seven of the books being prosecuted for obscenity in 1954 and Janson's publisher and distributor were jailed. A warrant was issued for the arrest of the author and Frances returned from Spain to face trial himself, a trial that eventually collapsed. Evidence presented during the two cases led to further
prosecutions amongst respectable publishers and eventually to the creation of a new Obscene Publications Act.

In addition, respected researcher and pulp fiction historian Steve Holland gives, for the first time, a comprehensive account of the early 1950s Home Office crackdown on so called 'obscene' paperbacks – of which the Janson novels were the prime examples – during which some 350,000 books and magazines were destroyed on magistrates’ instructions: a true story less notorious but no less remarkable than the controversy surrounding Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

THE TRIALS OF HANK JANSON also details the full publishing history of the Janson stories, from 1946 right up to the present day with Telos’s reissue series.  THE TRIALS OF HANK JANSON can be orderd from Telos Books.

Visco - New Update!
Visco Version 2.07 was released October 2nd 2004. Here is an extract from the news page:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VISCO - TWO YEARS OLD OCTOBER 2ND!
This version hits the web on the exact second anniversary if Visco's first release when it emerged into the world with only 125 images of just two titles. In this release, it contains 2427 images across 56 titles. There is a feast for the lovers of obscure reprint editions this time, with coverage of the British editions of DYNAMIC SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASTIC, FANTASTIC ADVENTURES, FANTASTIC NOVELS, MARVEL SCIENCE STORIES, SCIENCE FICTION AND SUPER SCIENCE STORIES, along with the Canadian edition of
SUPER SCIENCE STORIES and the strange Swan American Mags. I have several more reprint editions up my sleeve but for reasons of pure sentiment wanted to get this release out tonight.

In the past year, Visco has won two awards and has had 21,000 visitors, reaching 200 a day at times. Let me take the opportunity to thank all those who have contributed to the site and all those who have come to visit. Though I have not spent as much time on it as I would have liked and it has sometimes gone without updating for months at a time, my enthusiasm remains undimmed and it is only lack of time that is holding back progress. Please keep sending in the scans and have patience if they don't appear straight away.

Can anyone help with the Australian magazines
SCIENCE FICTION MONTHLY (not to be confused with the UK title of the same name) and POPULAR SCIENCE FICTION? Also high up on my wants list - the British edition of "WEIRD TALES".

Visco can be found at http://www.sfcovers.net

Wildside Press - THE WEIRD WORKS OF ROBERT E. HOWARD Volume 1- UPDATE!
SHADOW KINGDOMS - THE WEIRD WORKS OF ROBERT E. HOWARD Volume 1 is coming in December.
Robert E. Howard's professional career spans a dozen years, from his first story sale, "Spear and Fang" in 1924, to his western masterpiece, "The Vultures of Wahpeton" shortly before his death in 1936. He wrote for a wide spectrum of magazines, from Argosy to Jack Dempsey's Fight Magazine, but the one constant in his varied and interesting career is WEIRD TALES magazine.

Collected here are the first of several volumes of Howard's poetry and prose for
WEIRD TALES, in the order of publication. For fans and scholars, it's a treat to be able to watch Howard's development of themes, ideas, and style as he produced some of the most memorable characters - Solomon Kane, King Kull, Bran Mac Morn, and ultimately, his greatest character of all - Conan the Cimmerian!

Volume one of Shadow Kingdoms reprints Howard's first sale ever, "Spear and Fang," in July 1925, through his fantasy output for September 1929. This includes the first appearances of Solomon Kane ("Red Shadows") and King Kull ("The Shadow Kingdom"), as well as several of Howard's early supernatural tales, such as "Wolfshead" and "The Hyena." SHADOW KINGDOMS is both a testament to Howard's dedication to his craft and a unique collection from one of the most famous pulp magazines of all time.

Edited by Paul Herman. Introduction by Mark Finn. Cover by Stephen Fabian.

This title is not expected to ship until December 2004.

UPDATE:
You can now order this book directly from Wildside Press.

You can also order a subscription to the entire 10 volume set!
Steve Fabian will be doing the covers for all ten volumes!
There MAY be a bookplate for each edition signed by Steve Fabian and Paul Herman.
I will post further news on the bookplate if it becomes a reality.

Moviehole also reports there is movement on both solo "Alien" and "Predator" films.

The Polaris of the Snows trilogy
Without a doubt the single greatest story ever published by THE ALL-STORY MAGAZINE was Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Over the year many imitators have been spawn but none was as successful in combining imagination, adventure, romance and sheer story-telling power as Charles B. Stilson's Polaris of the Snows.  So successful was Stilson's novel of a man raised in the barren plains of Antarctica that two further novels were inspired.  And so tight is the plotting of the three novels that they form one sustained narrative.  The story begins in Polaris - of the Snows when Polaris Janess, born on an aborted quest for the South Pole, raised by his invalid father, then setting forth to discover America following his father's death.  His quest leads him to love and a fantastic forgotten city deep in the polar wastes inhabited by Greeks strayed from the Trojan War. The tale continues in Minos of Sardanes when catalysmic nature threatens the survival of Sardanes and its King, Minos, must battle with a crazed High Priest who would lead his people to their doom. Polaris and the Goddess Glorian is the extraordinary conclusion to this saga as Polaris, his beloved Rose Emer, the Sardanian survivors attempt to return to America only to be marooned on an island controlled by a lost colony from Atlantis.  But Polaris' coming had been foretold centuries before by the Goddess Glorian, and he would free the natives of this land from the Atlanteans cruel dominion.  These stories were reprinted in FAMOUS FANTASTIC MYSTERIES in the 1940's and by Avalon Books in the 1960's but in both cases the editor felt compelled to cut ten percent or more out of the original story. Buccaneer Books has gone back to the original pulps and lovingly scanned and carefully OCRed these stories in their entirety.  Not one word has been left out.

Three great books, three great stories.  They can be purchased separately or in a set for one low price.
Polaris-of the Snows. Xx pages. 8.5 x 11 paper, side stapled, color cover of the original Argosy cover. $7
Minos of Sardanes.  Xx pages. 8.5 x 11 paper, side stapled, color cover of the original Argosy cover. $7
Polaris and the Goddess Glorian.  Xx pages. 8.5 x 11 paper, side stapled, color cover of the original Argosy cover. $10.
Or all three - the complete Polaris trilogy for just $20.

The Abyss of Wonders, Captain Trouble, The Copper Princess -
Three great books by Perley Poore Sheehan

Perley Poore Sheehan was a very popular and successful writer for the Munsay magazines during the nineteen-teens.  His many novels were all reprinted in hardcover.  During the twenties he was lured to Hollywood at which point his career must have gone into a tailspin because he returned to writing for the pulps in the thirties, but mostly for lesser publishers than he'd dealt with twenty years before. But even his thirties stories are solid, clever entertaining tales.

The Copper Princess appeared in
THE ALL-STORY in 1913. It is a charming novel of love, science, mummies and reincarnation.  Dr. Howland an anthropologist at a New York museum becomes convinced that a centuries old, perfectly preserved mummy of an Incan princess is not dead but caught in a weird state of suspended animation.  He calls on the help of a Russian woman scientist who has experimented with what they call "electric sleep" Meanwhile they are being harassed by a Russian Secret Agent who seeks the woman's brother, a revolutionary. The Secret Agent raids the museum just as the Princess awakens causing Dr. Howland to flee with her into the "wilds" of the Bronks.  There he finds himself falling on love with his experiment even as he wonders if he has given birth to a creature without a soul. This is a great story, a forgotten classic, that has never been reprinted ever before.  The Copper Princess. Xx pages. 8.5 x 11 paper, side stapled, color cover of the original ALL-STORY cover. $7

The Abyss of Wonder
is a mystical tale of adventure and growth, of self-knowledge and love.  It was reprinted once before in 1950 in a limited edition volume from Polaris Books and is now available again in a low-cost edition from Buccaneer Books.  John McGoff was an ordinary boy growing up in a small town in middle America.  Like many young boys John dreamed he had a secret life, different, greater than his own.  Unlike other boys, John McGoff had one.  Early in life he had formed a close friendship with an old Chinese laundryman, Charlie and an old Russian cobbler, Ivan.  They called themselves the Sons of the Blue Wolf, seekers of the unknown and shared tales with young John, of their lives in the old country and of the great mystery that is the Gobi desert.  Into that desert once traveled a great shaman, Shan Marakov, who found at its center a fabled lost city, Shamballah, center of all wisdom of the world, oldest city of all, the tomb of Kubla Khna, the home of the fabled Abyss of Wonders.  John McGoff, recognizing the similarity of his name, is convinced that he is the heir to Shan Marakov. And so he is when in a vision he summons the first Shan Marakov, who tells the three it is time for them to travel East - Ivan to Siberia, Charley to Peking and John to Tamerlane's tomb in Samarkand where they would all receive further directions to the Abyss of Wonder.  Following his directions John (or Shan as he now calls himself) is taken through the Himalayas and long the western edge of the Gobi. There he follows spirit voices deeper into the desert and into the arms of Charlie and Ivan. Together they stumble on until at last they reach their goal.  But the ancient city of perfection isn't what it used to be.  The population is dwindling and the city is divided between slaying all strangers and remaining isolated and migrating into the greater world.  Shan, Charlie and Ivan's arrive precipitates a crisis.  Can Shan escape with the Golden Girl he has come to love?  A thrilling and thoughtful adventure unlike any you've read before.   The Abyss of Wonder by Perley Poore Sheehan. Xx pages. 8.5 x 11 paper, side stapled. $7

Captain Trouble: In the thirties Sheehan began writing two series for THRILLING ADVENTURES.  One was a Tarzan clone call Kwa which some day we hope to add to our list.  The other was about an American engineer, expelled from Russia, then suddenly caught up in the tribal conflicts in Afghanistan where he is proclaimed the heir to Kubla Khan, the future warlord of the world.  In a series of eight novelettes Sheehan traces the rise of Pelham Rutledge Shattuck from soldier of fortune, a fighting fool, to the crown of Kubla Khan. These stories are exciting, well written adventures, fun to read for there own sake.  They also recycle a lot of the mysticism and mythology from The Abyss of Wonders.
Captain Trouble by Perley Poore Sheehan. Xx pages. 8.5 x 11 paper, side stapled. $7

Peter The Brazen by George F. Worts
The Man of Bronze? No, just a telegraph operator who has a habit of sticking his nose into places it doesn't belong.  A desperate S.O.S. heard over an improvised radio sends Peter the Brazen on the trail of a oriental despot who kidnaps beautiful women only to condemn them to slave in his cinnabar (mercury oxide) mines, there to die horribly disfigured.  Peter vows to overthrow this mad man but can one American defeat the entire power of the Far East...?

Peter the Brazen appeared in numerous short stories and series in the pages of Argosy from1918 to 1934.   His first series of six interconnected stories appeared in hard cover from Lippencott in 1919. Recently all of the Peter the Brazen stories was collected in an expensive collection from Silicon Dispatch Case.  The Lippencott hard cover, because it reprinted an abridged version of the first six stories was not.  Here's a chance to find out what all the excitement about this American adventurer in the Orient is all about.  OCRed from the Lippencott hard cover, reset in new type on 8.5 x 11 paper, side-stapled and printed by cheap inkjet technology, this 130- page story can be yours for only $12.00.

Four novels by Frank L. Packard
The Adventures of Jimmie Dale by Frank L. Packard
Jimmie Dale, AKA, the Grey Seal appeared in five books appearing from the early teens to the mid-thirties. The stories did appear originally in the pulps but these reprints are taken from the book reprint editions.

Jimmie Dale was like every pulp hero there ever was all rolled  up in one - - only he came first!  Jimmie Dale was a playboy millionaire with a Park Avenue Manison, an elderly butler who'd known him since childhood, a chauffeur, a secret identity, a secret hideaway, is a master of disguise, and a second secret identity by which he has the trust and friendship of criminal element of New York's notorious Badlands.

Only one person in all the work knows that Jimmie Dale is also the notorious safe-cracker, The Grey Seal whose calling card is a gummed diamond-shaped grey sticker (or seal).  And thatperson, the mysterious woman called the Tocsin is blackmailing Jimmie into doing acts of kindness and nobility - - using his powers of safe-cracking to prevent further crimes!  Eleven short stories and a long novella make up the first of Jimmie Dale's adventures.

This story was the first Jimmie Dale novel plotted as a continuous novel, serialized in six parts.

James Bond - Next film delayed!
MGM, which is in the process of being sold to a group headed by Sony Corp, has insisted on a business-as-usual stance, but that business no longer involves the immediate production of a new James Bond movie.

The studio confirmed Wednesday that it has put the development of a new installment of its most important franchise on hold.   As a result, the movie, which had been billed simply as "Bond 21" and was scheduled for release Nov. 21, 2005, will not be hitting theaters in its traditional November slot as originally planned.

According to an MGM spokesperson, the studio made the decision because it has not yet found a director for the film. Sources familiar with the situation said that the producers plan to meet next month to decide whether to aim for a summer 2006 or November 2006 release date.

The five months of negotiations that preceded the Sony deal also are said to have affected the development of the film because during that period, executives were unable to move forward on the project.  Typically, the studio's Bond films go into production in January or February of the year in which a November release is planned, but to do that, a director has to be on board by the end of the previous summer.

A steady flow of directors' names has been associated with the assignment, with Paul McGuigan, who directed MGM's recent "Wicker Park," understood to be the first choice of producers.   There also has been speculation that Pierce Brosnan (news) will not resume the role of James Bond, which would necessitate recasting. MGM was unable to confirm that possibility.

PULP ADVENTURE-CON #4
PULP ADVENTURE-CON #4 will be held Saturday, November 6, 2004 between 10AM-5PM (Dealers can set up beginning at 8 AM) at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206 North, Bordentown, NJ (Exit 7 NJ Turnpike).
Cost for one six-foot table is $40.  Each additional table is $30 each.
Contact Rich Harvey for additional information or to reserve your tables.

On November 6th, Rich hopes to announce the dates for the 2005 show.  He is considering moving the show to a hotel at the Newark International Airport.  Friends of Old Time Radio has had great success in that area for many years.  It may become a TWO-DAY show, including a movie room and evening activities.

Rich is seriously considered scheduling the show the same weekend as Friends of Old Time Radio.  He believes both shows would benefit from people attending one show, paying a brief visit to another, much the same way that people from Pulpcon visited Bookery Fantasy bookshop.  Some of you thought it was a great idea, some thought the idea was terrible.  Let Rich know if you have any thoughts regarding the scheduling for next year.

Science of Superheroes is Modern Art!

THE SCIENCE OF SUPERHEROES by Robert Weinberg and Lois H. Gresh, published in hardcover by John Wiley & Sons in 2002, has been a resounding success in the book and comics field.  The non-fiction book studies the science behind such superhero characters as Superman, Batman, Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk, and many other comic book mainstays and separates the fact from the fantasy.  The book has gone through two printings, has been released as an audio book, been translated into a number of foreign languages, and is being used as a text in a number of physics classes both here and abroad.  In 2003, the book won two awards from the Society of Technical Communications.

However, not even the book's authors were prepared for its latest honor - the book served as the inspiration for a modern art exhibit by well-known contemporary artists, Andrea Jespersen and Ben Woodeson, at the Overgaden, Institute of Contemporary Art in Copenhagen, Denmark.  The exhibit is an examination of the superhero phenomenon and is based on
THE SCIENCE OF SUPERHEROES.  The show runs from Sept 18, 2004 through October 17, 2004.

More information about the exhibit can be found at:
http://www.absolutearts.com/artsnews/2004/09/20/32382.html

Appropriately enough, Gresh and Weinberg's new book,
THE SCIENCE OF SUPERVILLAINS, dealing with the science of villains in comic books, will be published by Wiley in hardcover on October 8, 2004.

Star Wars DVDs - Disc Problem!
The Digital Bits has been getting a lot of complaints from readers who have been experiencing a disc playback problem with A New Hope. Apparently, on many players, the disc freezes for a few seconds (most likely near the layer switch point) and then skips ahead several minutes. Fox Customer Service is taking the names and addresses of people who are experiencing this problem so they can arrange to send you a fixed replacement disc. You can call them at 888-223-2FOX.

TALES OF MAGIC AND MYSTERY, which published five issues between December 1927 and April 1928 under the (anonymous) editorship of Walter B. Gibson, remains one of the rarest and most sought after of the early fantasy pulp magazines. The third issue, featuring an uncredited cover believed to be by Earle Bergey according to MONTHLY TERRORS, an index to weird fiction magazines produced by Frank Parnell and Mike Ashley.  It also features contributions from Arthur Neale, Archie Binns, Howard Thurston, Carl M. Rosenquist, Ludwig Haupt, Walter B. Gibson, and Peter Chance.

STRANGE TALES #7 (January 1933)
When STRANGE TALES first appeared in 1931 as a pulp magazine, it was clearly something new. Edited by Harry Bates as a companion to ASTOUNDING STORIES, it combined the supernatural horror and fantasy of WEIRD TALES with vigorous action plots. STRANGE TALES rapidly attracted the most imaginative and capable writers of the day, including such WEIRD TALES regulars as Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, Henry S. Whitehead, Hugh B. Cave, Ray Cummings, and numerous others. Had the Great Depression not intervened and killed it after seven issues, the whole history of fantastic fiction might have been different. The January 1933 issue features Hugh B. Cave's classic "Murgunstrumm," as well as stories by Robert E. Howard, Henry S. Whitehead, and many more.

SPICY MYSTERY STORIES (February 1937)
The famous "weird menace" pulp magazines of the 1930s and 1940s are among the rarest and most sought-after publications by collectors. The "Spicy" magazines -- which included SPICY MYSTERY, SPICY ADVENTURE, SPICY DETECTIVE, and others -- published a titilating mix of fantasy, horror, mystery, and suspense, punctuated by episodes of torture, sadism, sex, and other risque elements. Although tame by current standards, and sometimes of dubious literary merit, these publications presented tales which thrilled a sensation-hungry audience. Despite the themes and constraints of the market, writers who would later become famous -- including Hugh B. Cave, E. Hoffman Price, Robert Leslie Bellem, and many more -- were frequent contributors.  The February 1937 issue features Bellem, Hugh Speer, Justin Case (Hugh B. Cave), and many others -- plus all the classic "spicy" artwork!

Wildside Press - THE WEIRD WORKS OF ROBERT E. HOWARD Volume 1
