Doctor Who
Doctor Who is returning to tv with thirteen 45-minute episodes on BBC1 early 2005 and later in the U.S.  The rumor now is that the Sci-Fi channel will be picking  it up, along with the old episodes.  The new show is currently filming.  Christopher Eccleston is The Doctor and Billie Piper is his companion Rose  Tyler.  Perhaps the biggest news of all is that the BBC accually have given  the series a decent budget.  It's been said that "this will be a lavish  production, with much more money being spent on it than was ever spent on  the original 1963-1989 series."    For MUCH MORE information, including  production photos, you can check out:  http://www.gallifreyone.com/newstv.php

Visco - New Update!
Visco Version 2.0 was released September 18th 2004. Here is an extract from the news page:

NEWS - release 2.06 - September 18th 2004
I have given up apologising for the slow pace of development on Visco - other aspects of life keep intruding and I shall just do what I can, when I can.

This new version contains the British title Science Fiction Monthly, with all of its 28 issues. Many thanks to Yutaka Morita, who patiently scanned this oversize magazine in sections and assembled the images seamlessly. Can anyone help with the Australian magazines "Science Fiction Monthly" (not to be confused with the UK title added in this release) and "Popular Science Fiction"?

There is a backlog of minor additions and amendments to be included and I thank all those who have sent me new scans. I have not incorporated them this time as I have a small design change to make that should make this kind of maintenance easier in future.

Please note a possible annoyance if you have installed Windows XP SP2 and the latest version of Internet Explorer. This latest Windows software has, for admirable reasons, facilities to block pop-ups and unwanted active content. However, my site uses active content (Javascript) to manage the artist index and you may find that some windows are blocked when you try to access it. You should be able to get round this simply by changing your security settings to allow active content on this site, which you can do for this site alone without relaxing security for other sites.

Wildside Press - THE WEIRD WORKS OF ROBERT E. HOWARD Volume 1
SHADOW KINGDOMS - THE WEIRD WORKS OF ROBERT E. HOWARD Volume 1 is coming in December.
Robert E. Howard's professional career spans a dozen years, from his first story sale, "Spear and Fang" in 1924, to his western masterpiece, "The Vultures of Wahpeton" shortly before his death in 1936. He wrote for a wide spectrum of magazines, from Argosy to Jack Dempsey's Fight Magazine, but the one constant in his varied and interesting career is WEIRD TALES magazine.

Collected here are the first of several volumes of Howard's poetry and prose for
WEIRD TALES, in the order of publication. For fans and scholars, it's a treat to be able to watch Howard's development of themes, ideas, and style as he produced some of the most memorable characters - Solomon Kane, King Kull, Bran Mac Morn, and ultimately, his greatest character of all - Conan the Cimmerian!

Volume one of Shadow Kingdoms reprints Howard's first sale ever, "Spear and Fang," in July 1925, through his fantasy output for September 1929. This includes the first appearances of Solomon Kane ("Red Shadows") and King Kull ("The Shadow Kingdom"), as well as several of Howard's early supernatural tales, such as "Wolfshead" and "The Hyena." SHADOW KINGDOMS is both a testament to Howard's dedication to his craft and a unique collection from one of the most famous pulp magazines of all time.

Edited by Paul Herman. Introduction by Mark Finn. Cover by Stephen Fabian.

SATAN'S DAUGHTER AND OTHER TALES FROM THE PULPS
by E. Hoffmann Price
A baker's dozen of classic pulp stories, by a master of the genre!
SATAN'S DAUGHTER AND OTHER TALES FROM THE PULPS includes such rare gems as the title story, Scourge of the Silver Dragon, Revolt of the Damned, Pit of Madness, The Walking Dead, Drink or Draw, and many more.

Retail price: $15.95

STRANGE TALES #7 (January 1933)
When STRANGE TALES first appeared in 1931 as a pulp magazine, it was clearly something new. Edited by Harry Bates as a companion to ASTOUNDING STORIES, it combined the supernatural horror and fantasy of WEIRD TALES with vigorous action plots. STRANGE TALES rapidly attracted the most imaginative and capable writers of the day, including such WEIRD TALES regulars as Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, Henry S. Whitehead, Hugh B. Cave, Ray Cummings, and numerous others. Had the Great Depression not intervened and killed it after seven issues, the whole history of fantastic fiction might have been different. The January 1933 issue features Hugh B. Cave's classic "Murgunstrumm," as well as stories by Robert E. Howard, Henry S. Whitehead, and many more.
Retail price: $15.00
Order from Wildside Press.

SPICY MYSTERY STORIES (February 1937)
The famous "weird menace" pulp magazines of the 1930s and 1940s are among the rarest and most sought-after publications by collectors. The "Spicy" magazines -- which included SPICY MYSTERY, SPICY ADVENTURE, SPICY DETECTIVE, and others -- published a titilating mix of fantasy, horror, mystery, and suspense, punctuated by episodes of torture, sadism, sex, and other risque elements. Although tame by current standards, and sometimes of dubious literary merit, these publications presented tales which thrilled a sensation-hungry audience. Despite the themes and constraints of the market, writers who would later become famous -- including Hugh B. Cave, E. Hoffman Price, Robert Leslie Bellem, and many more -- were frequent contributors.  The February 1937 issue features Bellem, Hugh Speer, Justin Case (Hugh B. Cave), and many others -- plus all the classic "spicy" artwork!

THE BIG BIG LITTLE BOOK BOOK - Coming in December!
Do you remember Big Little Books, those tiny tomes teeming with thrilling tales of adventure and excitement? Most measuring around 4 inches square and packed with 400+ pages, Big Little Books (and their many cousins and variants) have entertained children since 1932 with their large text stories and captioned pictures starring popular comic characters like Mickey Mouse, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Dick Tracy, Orphan Annie, The Phantom, Donald Duck, The Gumps, and even superheroes like Batman, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and Aquaman. Costing just a dime all those years ago, many of these miniature treasures now command thousands of dollars in the collectibles market. This exhaustive, full-color pictorial guide also features "Better Little Books," "Dime Action Books," and many other variation on the theme, and many of these books are presented for the first time in a unique three-angle view that showcases the vibrant artwork and distinctive designs on the front, back and spine of every volume. BLOOD 'N' THUNDER #8
Ed Hulse's popular tribute to the pulps, movies, and radio shows of the past should be back with a new issue around the end of September.

Forthcoming in issue #8, dated Summer 2004, will be an extensive tribute to prolific pulpster and novelist Frederick C. Davis, who wrote the adventures of such popular characters as Operator #5 and the Moon Man, plus hundreds of
other stories in the detective/mystery, aviation, Western, and weird-menace genres. The issue will begin with an overview of the author's career by Davis scholar Garyn Roberts, who co-edited THE NIGHT NEMESIS, a 1985 collection of Moon Man stories plus the newly released THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF THE MOON MAN. For a look at Davis, the man, there will be a lengthy interview with his son, Rick Davis, and granddaughter, Karen Cunningham. They provide valuable insights into FCD's personality, work habits, and influences. Davis himself reveals some of his writing secrets in an article reprinted from a 1941 issue of WRITER'S DIGEST. Finally, what is believed to be a complete David bibliography, listing many hundreds of pulp stories as well as several dozen hardcover novels and non-fiction magazine appearances, will also appear. The Davis tribute will be illustrated with candid photos of the author, B&W illustrations that accompanied his pulp stories, and a plethora of pulp covers from issues containing FCD yarns. Filling out the issue will be Rodney Schroeter's in-depth report on this year's Windy City Pulp and Paperback Show, including comments by 2004 Guest-of-Honor and legendary science-fiction author and editor, Frederik Pohl.

The return of Conan is at hand.  By the mid 1970s, Robert E Howard’s seminal Sword and Sorcery hero had cut a path through the comic-book world, restored to vivid life by prolific writer Roy Thomas and his host of talented artists  Of those artists, none contributed more to Conan’s legacy than the legendary John Buscema.  Taking the lush and detailed realism that had already been established in the comic-book series, Buscema pushed the look of Howard’s creation in an entirely new direction, illustrating what would become the definitive version of Conan for an entire generation of readers. Collecting issues #27-#33 of Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian series. Featuring completely remastered color.

CLASSIC COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS #2: CONAN - Coming in February!
Dark Horse Comic's new Classic Comic Book Characters series will feature characters from a variety of  publishers’ books, not just Dark Horse’s. For our second release we are very pleased to present one of the all-time favorite characters, Robert E. Howard’s Conan. Although Conan first appeared in the pulp magazines of the 1930’s, it was his debut as a comic book character in the 1970’s that really rekindled interest in the character. The comic series was groundbreaking in many ways, elevating the standard of artwork and pushing the envelope of content with its savage approach to the “sword and sorcery” genre. Our statue is inspired by that version of Conan, but also recalls the 1940’s sculpting and painting style of “syroco” statues with a result which Craig Yoe describes as “primitive but charming”.

On sale February 23, 5" tall, fully-painted, packaged in a litho-printed full-color tin box and included is a vintage-style pinback button, and booklet about the character and his creator, limited to 750 pieces, $49.95.

Shortly forthcoming is S. T. Joshi's THE EVOLUTION OF THE WEIRD TALE. In this volume, Joshi assesses a wide array of American and British  supernatural writers of the past two centuries, meticulously scrutinizing their weird work and gauging their place in the canon of horror fiction. Such American writers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries as W. C. Morrow, F. Marion Crawford, Robert W. Chambers, and Edward Lucas White come under scrutiny, as well as their British counterparts E. F. Benson, Rudyard Kipling, and L. P. Hartley. Joshi includes substantial essays on Lovecraft and his disciples Robert Bloch, Fritz Leiber, and Frank Belknap Long. In a provocative section on contemporary writers, Joshi dissects the vampire novels of Les Daniels, the short stories of "Twilight Zone" creator Rod Serling, David J. Schow and the school of splatterpunk, and the novels and tales of Poppy Z. Brite. All in all, Joshi has provided some of the most in-depth analyses of both classic and modern weird writers ever written. 216 pages long, EVOLUTION will be available for $15 in softcover.

MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES IN POSTWAR AMERICA is by Max Allan Collins, George Hagenauer, Steven Heller, and Richard Oberg.  Publisher: Taschen Press.  512 pages.  List price: $39.99. Street date: September 2004.

Battling dangerous beasts such as ferocious lions, venomous snakes, or swarms of man-eating weasels, the hunky heroes of men's adventure magazines were frequently depicted struggling to protect themselves and especially their buxom female companions from the gruesome tragic ends that threatened their every waking moment. Whether stranded on desert islands, clashing with motorcycle gangs, or shackled in prison camps, the magazines' male and female protagonists were perpetually fighting their ways out of dangerous predicaments. To pay homage to the American periodicals of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s that "documented" such outrageous exploits, TASCHEN brings you this hefty, comprehensive guide packed full of colorful cover art, sumptuous sample spreads, and enlightening essays. With an in-depth introductory essay describing the history, culture, and artistry of men's adventure-a.k.a. "sweat"-magazines, as well as chapter-by-chapter exploration of various subjects including the role of women and the portrayal of Nazis and Communists, this definitive study of the genre examines not only the popular appeal of the magazines but also their social and political implications. Also included are publisher listings and profiles of artists and writers, as well as an interview with Norm Eastman, one of the genre's most important artists.

Star Wars Episodes 7, 8, & 9
This past Wednesday, ComingSoon.net had the opportunity to attend Lucasfilm and Fox Home Entertainment's roll-out of the "Star Wars Trilogy" DVD set (Coming Sept. 21st.) One of the surprise guests at the event was Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. He ended up being one of the highlights of the presentation as he enthusiastically recalled humorous anecdotes about the making of the original films, working with Kevin Smith, seeing TROOPS for the first time, and more.

However, his comments towards the end about Episodes 7, 8, and 9 really got everyone's attention. Mark told those in attendance what Lucas told him the third trilogy would be about. Hamill also went into detail about Lucas' original plans for those films, when they would be made, and more. Plus, Lucasfilm's Jim Ward confirmed that a "Star Wars" TV series is on the way in the near future (though he didn't say when it would be set).

King Kong
Peter Jackson and his cast and crew are assembling in New Zealand, preparing to start principal photography on King Kong later this month.  A press release heralding the production's launch was released this morning by Universal with plot and character details and some new comments by Jackson.

Naomi Watts' character, Ann Darrow, is described as "an actress from the world of vaudeville who finds herself out of a job in Depression-era New York."  Things turn around for Ann when she meets Jack Black's Carl Denham, an "entrepreneur, raconteur, adventurer and filmmaker who is struggling to make a name for himself in the entertainment industry."  Denham is characterized as "bold, ebullient and charismatic" with "a natural sense of showmanship and an appetite for greatness, which ultimately leads to catastrophe."

Adrien Brody plays Jack Driscoll, a playwright from New York playwright who is described as "an unlikely hero in a romantic adventure story which will test his physical courage and his heart."

Mystery*File - #45 is now available - Recommended!
Steve Lewis has revived his fanzine, MYSTERY*FILE.
MYSTERY*FILE consists of reviews of mysteries and detective novels, of commentary on mystery and crime fiction, of checklists and matters of bibliographic interest, and of letters.  MYSTERY*FILE is a "print" magazine only.  None of the material in it will appear on-line.  The Internet has revolutionized the world, but there's still nothing like the feel of paper in your hands and the thrill of seeing printed words on the page.
The primary focus of MYSTERY*FILE is not to be an up-to-date newsletter for the field, but a place where old and new works co-exist, where older mysteries can be brought up and discussed as well as those by the most recent hot authors, and where the careers of writers can be looked at in perspective.  MYSTERY*FILE is for those fans who love to read and talk about mysteries and series characters, and those who love to make checklists and those who love to have them, and if you can assist in  accomplishing any of these goals, then so much the better.

The efforts of a number of people helped produce each issue, and they'd appreciate your comments, both on their work and on the books and the movies they talk about.  Letters are not only accepted for publication, they are requested, if not demanded.

PULP ADVENTURE-CON #4
PULP ADVENTURE-CON #4 will be held Saturday, November 6, 2004 between 10AM-5PM (Dealers can set up beginning at 8 AM) at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206 North, Bordentown, NJ (Exit 7 NJ Turnpike).
Cost for one six-foot table is $40.  Each additional table is $30 each.
Contact Rich Harvey for additional information or to reserve your tables.

On November 6th, Rich hopes to announce the dates for the 2005 show.  He is considering moving the show to a hotel at the Newark International Airport.  Friends of Old Time Radio has had great success in that area for many years.  It may become a TWO-DAY show, including a movie room and evening activities.

Rich is seriously considered scheduling the show the same weekend as Friends of Old Time Radio.  He believes both shows would benefit from people attending one show, paying a brief visit to another, much the same way that people from Pulpcon visited Bookery Fantasy bookshop.  Some of you thought it was a great idea, some thought the idea was terrible.  Let Rich know if you have any thoughts regarding the scheduling for next year.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Paramount Pictures will release the anticipated Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow into theaters on September 17, and Angelina Jolie told ComingSoon.net that they are already thinking about the next step.

Jolie says that if the special effects action-thriller, written and directed by Kerry Conran, is a success at the box office, then the cast is ready to make a "Sky Captain" prequel. Jolie plays Franky Cook, commander of an amphibious squadron, who aids Sky Captain (Jude Law) and chronicle reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) in an attempt to stop Dr. Totenkopf from destroying the earth.  Angelina mentioned that the prequel would cover such things as her romance with Sky Captain (she's his old flame in the Sept. 17 film), why she has an eye patch, and much more.

New clips were posted every day this week AOL Channel.

War of the Worlds
Dakota Fanning will confront extraterrestrials alongside Tom Cruise in the upcoming remake of War of the Worlds, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
