History of Science Fiction Fantastic Voyage: Evolution of Science Fiction will air on the History Channel, Saturday, 9/28, at 8:00 pm EDT. It will be repeated at Midnight. The show runs 120 minutes. An insightful documentary boldly goes into the genre's history in literature, film and TV. The exploration of sci-fi (a term, the show points out, that wasn't coined until the 1930s) begins with 17th-century tales inspired by the discoveries of Copernicus and Galileo. Also examined are its role in social and political commentary; the merging of science fiction with science fact in the '50s and '60s with developments such as space travel and the moon landing; and its leap from "cultural outsider" to mainstream entertainment. In addition, there are profiles of early writers Mary Shelley, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells; and comments by William Shatner and TV GUIDE senior editor Michael Davis.

by the pulps Tom Strong #11 and #12 featured a two-part story titled Terror on Terra Obscura. The characters who appeared in the story (Pyroman, Miss Masque, The American Crusader, The Black Terror, the Fighting Yank, and Doc Strange) are real comic characters that were published in the 1940s by Ned Pines under the Standard/Better/Nedor imprint(s). An article about these characters and how they've fallen into the public domain, only to be revived by various creators, including Alan Moore for his America's Best Comics line and his Doc Savage-inspired character, Tom Strong is available on the Newsarama website at http://www.newsarama.com/public.html. The heroes are slated to get a return engagement in 2003 when Peter Hogan pens a Terra Obscura miniseries for ABC [with art by Yanique Paquette and Karl Story], utilizing the same characters on the same world. If interest is high enough in the miniseries, ABC will launch the heroes of Terra Obscura in their own ongoing monthly.

Conan Art Prints Bud Plant Comic Art has available two limited edition, signed and numbered Conan art prints. These prints were produced for the 2002 San Diego ComiCon. Bud Plant has obtained the last remaining prints, and is the exclusive retailer of the prints. Both prints are 18"X24", full color, and retail for $70 each. The first print is by Mark Schultz. It depicts Conan standing high upon a dais with many tribesmen about him. Their attention is focused on a gorgeous, naked dancing woman, whose jewelry and raiments are scattered about her on the blood-soaked platform. Most men in the audience, including Conan, are holding bloodied weapons at ease, intent on the spectacle before them. Schultz created this image for the upcoming Conan of Cimmeria Volume 1. The
second print is by Gary Gianni. It depicts Conan and a nomadic chieftan
recline in a tent in heavy, tooled chairs with goblets of wine in hand. Conan,
his head propped on his hand, scowls at the chief, who returns the sour glare
with one of his own. With finery and the spoils of war about them and an assemblage
of men visible through the drawn canvas outside, this looks like the scene of
a wary debate or fragile alliance. Gianni created this image for the upcoming

Lloyd
Biggle, Jr. Lloyd Biggle, Jr., Ph. D., musician, Classic SF and mystery author, and internationally known oral historian died September 12, after a twenty-year battle with leukemia and cancer. Biggle was know for integrating social and ecological concerns into roaring space operas beginning with his first novel The Angry Espers in 1961. Other works by Biggle include This Darkening Universe, The Metallic Muse, The Fury Out of Time, The World Menders and The Still Small Voice of Trumpets. His short story Monument earned him a Hugo nomination in 1961. In the mystery field, his Grandfather Rastin stories appeared formany years in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. He loved writing historical fiction set in late Victorian and Edwardian England. He began the new Sherlock Holmes novels, The Quallsford Inheritance and The Glendower Conspiracy, which were researched on long visits to England. These were followed by a series of stories featured in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine starring his Victorian sleuth, Lady Sara Varnley. He also wrote the Pletcher and Lambert mystery novels.

The Lost Bloch Crimes and Punishments - The Lost Bloch Volume 3 is tentatively planned for release in 2002. The Lost Bloch resurrects novelette and novella-length Blochiana, rarely or never-reprinted pulp pieces often overlooked because they were never published as stand-alone books. The centerpiece of Crimes and Punishments is the novella-length study, Dr. Holmes' Murder Castle - the closest Bloch ever came to writing a true-crime book, chronicling the homicidal reign of terror perpetrated by H. H. Holmes, America's most outrageous (and least-known) serial killer. Bob's output for the mystery pulps is represented by It's Your Own Funeral and other selections, while his more fanciful and fantastic side gives vent to the novella Hell's Angel. The chaser? A stiff shot of Bob's observations on another real-life murderer, The Shambles of Ed Gein. There is also an interview with Bob in his own words, conducted by Douglas E. Winter, plus an expository piece by series editor David J. Schow, and a celebrity foreword by world-famous author, critic and illustrator Gahan Wilson. Volume 3 will be the last volume in the series. Dustjacket art is by Bernie Wrightson. There will be two editions.

Ackermansion To Be Sold Longtime SF editor and literary agent Forrest Ackerman is selling off his legendary Hollywood house, nicknamed the "Ackermansion," and his collection of SF movie memorabilia to pay legal bills, the Los Angeles Times reported. The two-story, 5,800-square-foot mansion, perched on a winding street in the hills above Hollywood, once had more than 300,000 SF and horror film items crammed into every nook and cranny, the newspaper reported. Ackerman reportedly led more than 50,000 fans on personal tours of the house and the ragtag collection of memorabilia, including movie posters, paintings and masks of screen legends like Boris Karloff, as well as costumes and props from classic SF movies, the newspaper reported. Ackerman, the former literary agent for such authors as Ray Bradbury and founding editor of the cult magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland, is selling the house, which was listed for $1.3 million and is now in escrow, the Times reported. In addition, Ackerman, 85, said he is liquidating his memorabilia collection to raise money to pay for an expensive legal fight against his onetime business associate, Ray Ferry. Ackerman now lives in a rented five-room house in Los Angeles with a few of his most-treasured items, including a replica of the female robot from his favorite film, Metropolis. Classic Era of Crime Fiction The Classic Era of Crime Fiction is now available. The Classic Era of Crime Fiction is a sequel to Peter Haining's The Classic Era of American Pulp Magazines and is again written by Haining. This lavishly illustrated history features rare covers and classic illustrations, revealing how crucial artists were to establishing the identity and popularity of crime fiction. During its "classic era"--from 1850 to 1950--a variety of writers developed every important element of the genre: the police detective, the professional sleuth, the hard-boiled private eye, the secret agent, and of course, the criminal masterminds, crooks, and gangsters. From Sherlock Holmes and James Bond to Edgar Allan Poe and Joseph Conrad, this book explores and exciting cultural history. Crime enthusiasts can here see how famous (and sometimes infamous) works of crime fiction originally looked, and how unknown writers and illustrators became responsible for one of the cornerstones of popular culture. The book retails for $35. Contact Mike Chomko at chomko@enter.net if you are interested in owning a copy. This book is also available from Amazon Books.

Moonstone Books Coming from Moonstone Books in January is the next title in the Moonstone Noir series: Jack Hagee, Private Eye. The story is by C.J. Henderson with art by Richard Clark. The art is painted in grey tones by The Phantom colorist Ken Wolak. Finally, the cover is by Doug Klauba. Here
is the Moonstone solicitation information: Hagee's Manhattan is the one the tourists don't get to see. It's those small twisty back streets in Chinatown, the reeking dumpster-filled alleys of midtown, the crumbling docks, the beer-drenched bars that stink of rotting foam and their patron's indifference. It is a lump of land 14 miles long stuffed with seven million people every day--which is apparently five and half million more than it can handle. It is a violent, twisted, thieving, scumhole. It isn't really hell on earth, it's more what you get when you put too many rats in a cage and slam the door. Imagine
that world with a hangover, a crime that doesn't want to be solved, and the pain
of from a capped tooth that doesn't like being in your mouth. That's the comic
we're offering you here. Violence, anger, and the rest of those sissy deadly sins
make anappearance, but Haggee's not above shooting them in the back if they get
too careless with him. Welcome to Jack Haggee's world, gentle reader. Hang on,
and watch your step. 48
pages, squarebound, self-contained, painted grey scale, $5.50

Night Shade Books Night Shade Books will be publishing a series of volumes collecting H.P. Lovecraft's letters. Rather than chronological, as with the Arkham editions, the Night Shade editions will be thematic. Each volume will be dedicated to a specific subject, time, or place. The Arkham editions have severely edited/cut the letters, eliminating a great deal of material. These editions will be uncut, containing the complete texts of the letters, as well as any additional illustrations. The Night Shade editions will be far more comprehensive. The
first volume will be Mysteries of Time and Spirit: Letters of H.P. Lovecraft
and Donald Wandrei, edited by S.T. Joshi and David E. Schultz. This
volume collects all known correspondence between Lovecraft and Wandrei.
Most of Mysteries of Time and Spirit is unpublished material, as will be
most of the letters volumes produced in the future. Mysteries of
Time and Spirit will be available as a $40 trade hardcover or a $20 trade
paperback, and will run about 450 pages. Shipping is $5.50 for the first
book and $1.00 for each additional book. Night

Night Shade Books The first volume in The Collected Fiction of William Hope Hodgson set has been delayed until next year. The proofing and checking is taking longer than anticipated and Nightshade would rather be late than wrong. They want to make sure this series is as correct and complete as humanly possible. It looks like there will be a companion volume
to Karl Edward Wagner's Gods in Darkness featuring Kane.

No efforts were spared to match the original weight, texture and color of the paper. The color of the ink and the detailed artwork have been faithfully reproduced. Recreated to exact specifications, this Shadow Dollar will become a treasured keep-sake among your Shadow collectibles. To order your very own Shadow Dollar, send ten cents, along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope (business size, or No. 10) to: John Olsen, P.O. Box 181, Newberg, Oregon 97132. To make it even more special, Adventure House has produced a fully illustrated CD-ROM catalog. The CDROM contains nearly 1,600 full color images to go along with the nearly 1,600 items listed. DIME MYSTERY, SPICY MYSTERY, SUPER-DETECTIVE, SAUCY MOVIE TALES, PRIVATE DETECTIVE, STAR WESTERN, WILD WEST WEEKLY, and lots, lots more. They are also selling a CD-ROM catalog for only $10.00 plus $4.00 Priority Mail shipping. The CD-ROM catalog includes a nearly full sized scan of every item for sale. The CDs will be shipped at the same time as the paper catalog next week, but you can order a copy today either by mail or through the Adventure House web site. For some examples, check the Adventure House eBay auctions in a couple of days. To

Burroughs: Master of Fantasy Griffen Films Productions, LLC and KUHT-Houston PBS are developing a documentary devoted to Edgar Rice Burroughs entitled Burroughs: Master of Fantasy. This documentary will follow the life of the Burroughs family after the Civil War. An introduction on the kind of society in which ERB grew up is essential to understand his state of mind. The industrial revolution brought incertitude to the population regarding the new technologies and their use. A free mind like that of ERB was shut down and his professional misfortune ended when he could finally express himself through writing. At last, his mind could go where it wanted to: inside the imaginary world. The film will also follow ERB's personal life and career through his books and the different characters that he created. Following in parallel will be a description of the society in which Burroughs' writing evolved: the motion picture as a new art form, WWI, the pulp fiction magazines, the 1929 Wall Street crash, the first comic books etc. Hosts/Narrators
for the documentary are Bruce Boxleitner and Lydie Denier.

Darkside Press has assembled a selection of some of Mr. Leiber’s most renowned tales with a liberal dose of rarities that have been unavailable in any form for many years. Considered by many to be the greatest writer in the field of fantastic fiction, Fritz Leiber’s long and productive career spanned fifty years. This present collection assembles stories from sources ranging from the pulp magazines of the 1940’s to modern "slicks" like ESQUIRE.
