Robert Bloch's Crimes and Punishments Crimes and Punishments: The Lost Bloch, Volume 3 from Subterranean Press is finally heading to the printer. The wraparound dust jacket art (by Bernie Wrightson) is in hand, and the final edits have been completed. The shambles of Gein, the murders of Holmes, and the bounty of Bloch are explored in The Lost Bloch, Volume 3 - Crimes and Punishments -- a monstrous mix of true crime and made-up mystery, spiced with a dash of the supernatural in the fetching form of a belle from Hell. The centerpiece of Crimes and Punishments is the novella-length study, Dr. Holmes' Murder Castle -- the closest Bloch ever came to writing a true-crime book, chronicling the homicidal reign of terror perpetrated by H. H. Holmes, America's most outrageous (and least-known) serial killer. Bob's prodigious output for the classic mystery pulps is represented by It's Your Own Funeral and other selections, while his more fanciful and fantastic side gives vent to the novella Hell's Angel. The chaser? A stiff shot of Bob's observations on another real-life murderer, The Shambles of Ed Gein. There's also an interview with Bob in his own words, conducted by Douglas E. Winter, plus an expository piece by series editor David J. Schow, and a celebrity foreword by world-famous author, critic and illustrator Gahan Wilson. There

Trace Adventure Magazine Trace Adventure Magazine is a new fiction magazine whose first issue was planned for November. Unfortunately, the magazine did not make it into the September Previews soliciting product for November release. It does appear that the magazine WILL make it into the October Previews soliciting product for December release. Trace Adventure Magazine will contain two novelettes, each highlighting a different character, set on a strangely altered Earth. Each character is grounded in reality but must face off against otherworldly things. One of the features deliberately harkens back to those grand adventurers of the 1930's pulps, and is written in that style. The lead story in the first issue is Amazon Anne and the Riddle of the Black Scarab by Steve Kaye. The story includes a lot of shooting and fighting and blow darts and secret cabals and running around in a great big steampunk dirigible. You will also meet strange folks and deal with world destroying storms. The story will leave you breathless. I have read the first chapter and found it to be quite enjoyable. In issue #2 Anne and crew travel to South America and then to a mythical city in the clouds. In issue #3 Anne and three of her aides go to a medieval England to assist King Arthur the 30th against dragons and flame throwing knights. Four issues have been written so far, so the monthly should come out on time. This looks to be a “must read” for those who enjoy hero pulp fiction.

The Adventures of Doc Savage: A Definitive Chronology The Adventures of Doc Savage: A Definitive Chronology was written by Jeff Deischer and features artwork by Frank Hamilton and a Forword by Will Murray. In this book, Jeff attempts to place each Doc adventure, including the Dent radio plays and the Will Murray novels in the correct chronological order. In the book, Doc Savage His Apocalyptic Life, Farmer talks about his own chronology and states "To explain in detail would, however, take at least 20,000 words, and only the most zealous Savagologist would care to tackle an essay of that length." Well Jeff Deischer is that zealot! He provides detailed explanations of his placements (which often contradict Farmer's placements) in this book that runs nearly 200 pages. While the author's primary purpose was to build and justify a chronology, the book also contains many fascinating tidbits of Doc Savage lore that will be of interest to Doc fans. The book is fully indexed which will help hardcore Savagologists easily locate specific information about the Man of Bronze and his friends. The book is a 6X9 trade paperback with full color cover. The Adventures of Doc Savage: A Definitive Chronology is available from Green Eagle Publications, 2900 Standiford Ave 16B, PMB #136, Modesto, CA 95350. Price is $16.95 + $4.00 P&H. Bold Venture Press
Bold Venture Press has announced the 2003 publication
schedule for THE SPIDER!
The first four issues on the
2003 schedule represent true LOST EPISODES of THE SPIDER. Berkeley Books soon followed with the SPIDER, but made the unfortunate mistake of launching the series with the first issue, written by R.T.M. Scott. Just as the series began to cook, it was canceled with #4 WINGS OF THE BLACK DEATH. Blazing Publications tried again in 1984, beginning with SPIDER #9. Each subsequent reprint program neglected issues five through eight, leaving an obvious lapse in continuity. Now,
Bold Venture Press shall present these issues, long overlooked and out-of-print
since 1934. SPIDER

The
Classic Era of Crime Fiction The Classic Era of Crime Fiction is a sequel to Peter Haining's The Classic Era of American Pulp Magazines and is again written by Haining. This lavishly illustrated history features rare covers and classic illustrations, revealing how crucial artists were to establishing the identity and popularity of crime fiction. During its "classic era"--from 1850 to 1950--a variety of writers developed every important element of the genre: the police detective, the professional sleuth, the hard-boiled private eye, the secret agent, and of course, the criminal masterminds, crooks, and gangsters. From Sherlock Holmes and James Bond to Edgar Allan Poe and Joseph Conrad, this book explores and exciting cultural history. Crime enthusiasts can here see how famous (and sometimes infamous) works of crime fiction originally looked, and how unknown writers and illustrators became responsible for one of the cornerstones of popular culture. The book will be published in September 2002 and retail for $35.. Mike Chomko will probably offer this book for $32.50. "But he's also going to have an axe, and will use that quite a bit. For a Conan axe, of course, he's have to have a Frazetta axe, which would be quite impossible to swing around because of its tremendous size and weight. To be usable, a Frazetta film axe would have have to be made of something lighter than steel --aluminum, maybe... [The movie] It was written for him. Its got to be him. Somebody younger will play his son but Arnold is Conan. The story follows him until he's old. Its like, King Lear."

War of the Worlds One of the more fondly remembered Marvel Comics of the 1970's was Amazing Adventures featuring War of the Worlds. The star of the book was a character called Killraven. Killraven is Jonathan Raven, raised to be a gladiator in the Martian slave-pits following their successful invasion of Earth at the turn of the 21st century. However, Killraven's mind is impervious to the Martians' telepathic probes and when the opportunity arises, he rebels and escapes. Now, with a small band of like-minded Freemen, he wanders the devastated landscape, searching for the meaning of humanity and a place where he can lay down his arms and fight no more. This
October, Killraven returns in a new six issue mini-series written and pencilled
by Alan Davis with Mark Farmer inking and Gregory Wright coloring. This project
starts completely at square one again, with no history or back story Speaking of War of the Worlds, Paramount will be remaking The War of the Worlds. Tom Cruise will produce and may also star in the film. It is scheduled to begin shooting in 2003. |

This 224 page hardcover volume features a new introduction by best-selling author, Dean Koontz and will retail for $24.95 in the United States, $38.95 in Canada. The book takes a lighthearted but rigorous look at the science used in super hero and science fiction comic books, ranging from Superman to Spiderman to Strange Adventures. Co-author Robert Weinberg says "A chapter each is devoted to a number of the Marvel and DC superhero comic book characters - like Superman, Batman, Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk, and discuss the science behind the character and if they are believable or not. It's a funny book and we get a lot of chance to plug a bunch of our favorite SF and pulp stories. If you enjoy comics, I think you'll like it. If you read anything connected with pulps, this does have plenty of references and connections." The

Trace
Adventure Magazine Trace Adventure Magazine is a new fiction magazine whose first issue should be out in November. The magazine will be available through most comic shops and should be listed in the September Previews Magazine due out 28 August. Three issues have been written so far, so the monthly should come out on time.
