Bates, Ina Blanchard (1894-1977) (stories)
Oldest daughter of Alfred and Carrie Blanchard. One of 12 children. On October 2, 1914 Ina married Frank E. Bates. Before her marriage she worked in the packing room of the Commonwealth Shoe and Leather company. She wrote poetry, stories and song lyrics. And had some of her work in magazines, newspapers and a book of her poetry. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Whitman where she was a Sunday school teacher. When the church celebrated its 150 anniversary she wrote a pageant and a hymn “This Is My Church”. Besides her love for writing she loved to garden and sew. She sold doll clothes that she would sew by hand.
