Private Eye featured stories of hoodlums and small-time crooks, private investigators and the police, and some stories with surprise endings. Despite containing a good selection of contemporary crime-adventure and mystery stories by well-known authors, the magazine folded after only two issues, publishing material that was too little different from so many others.

Public Enemy: (about)
Public Enemy was Dell Publishing’s attempt to cash in on the G-Man boom of the mid-1930s and featured the adventures of Lynn Vickers, Agent G-77. However, it never really caught on and only ran for six issues under its initial title. In August 1936 the magazine was renamed to Federal Agent and gradually changed to a standard detective pulp, abandoning Lynn Vickers and his colleagues, but it only lasted for eight issues under this incarnation before folding in November 1937.

The Pursuit Detective Story Magazine (about)
The Pursuit Detective Story Magazine was launched by Star Publications in September 1953 but was really a throwback to the no-nonsense pulps of the 1940s. After a dozen (mainly) bi-monthly issues, the formula was popular enough for the publisher to launch a second title, Hunted Detective Story Magazine, which was identical to Pursuit and appeared in alternate months. Both magazines ran for a further two years before folding at the end of 1956.

Real Detective Tales: (about)
Real Detective Tales is one of the most elusive of the early detective pulps. It began in late 1922 under the name Detective Tales publishing indifferent mystery and detective stories, but by mid-1924 the publisher, Rural Publications, had run into difficulty so the magazine was sold to Real Detective Tales, Inc. who changed its name, first to Real Detective Tales and then to Real Detective Tales and Mystery Stories. By this point it had acquired an interesting stable of authors including Seabury Quinn, George Allan England and Miriam Allen deFord. It ran for six years under this latter title (mainly on a monthly basis) but gradually during 1931 transformed into a non-fiction magazine called Real Detective, although fiction continued to appear into 1934 at least. It is not currently known exactly when the last issue containing any fiction appeared. For most of the period it was a large (8.25″ x 11.25″) pulp, with a single issue (March 1923) as a regular pulp and a handful of issues in 1923 as an even larger (9″ x 12″) pulp.
