The Romancist and Novelist’s Library Vol. I ed. William Hazlitt (J. Clements, June 1839, 4/4d, 412pp, hc, an)
An ambitious project to bring into print the entire contents of the best romances, novels and tales published in America and Europe up until that time. It began publication as a 2d weekly paper bound into half-yearly volumes. In this form it ran to four volumes from January 2, 1839 to December 30, 1840. It was then converted into a chapbook format for easier reading. Each volume contained around 1.2 million words. Although not all stories are supernatural, there is an emphasis on the gothic romance. Because of the importance of this series, the full contents are included for completeness.
