Altus
Press - Announcement of an agreement to print new Paul Powers stories! Altus Press, one of the most prolific pulp reprint publishers, announced it has come to an agreement to publish a trio of books by noted pulp author Paul S. Powers. During the 1930s and 1940s, Paul Powers (1905-1971) was a prolific and successful pulp fiction writer, writing over 400 stories for such pulp fiction magazines as Wild West Weekly, Weird Tales, Thrilling Western, Texas Rangers, and more. Later Paul wrote an acclaimed full-length Western novel, Doc Dillahay. Paul is also the author of Pulp Writer: Twenty Years in the American Grub Street, his memoir of his career as a prolific and successful pulp fiction writer during the 1930s and 1940s. Thanks to the promotions of his granddaughter Laurie Powers, Paul Powers’ work has achieved new-found appreciation in recent years. Two of these new books will be collections of short stories discovered in 2009. These stories were written between 1945 and 1955 but were never published. Many are westerns, but there are also noir, thriller, animal, horror, and love stories. Together they show Powers’ remarkable versatility: He was an expert at writing westerns, but he loved writing other genres as well. Current publishing plans call for this material to be split into two collections: there will be at least one collection of western stories and one for the stories of other genres. In addition to these never-before published stories, there will also be a third collection containing Powers’ westerns that appeared in such magazines as Thrilling Western, Range Riders Western, The Rio Kid Western, and other magazines from the 1940s and 1950s. These stories will be published in traditional book form (both hard and softcover) as well as e-book form. Publication is expected to begin Winter 2009/10. Altus Press is a premier pulp fiction publisher and has published authors such as Lester Dent, Johnston McCulley, Henry Kuttner, Norvell Page, Frederick C. Davis, Richard Sale, Tom Johnson, Will Murray and many more. In 2009, founder Matthew Moring won the Echoes Award for work benefiting the pulp community and has also won an American Graphic Design Award for book design.

PLANET STORIES - Coming in November! Battle in the Dawn: The Complete Hok the Mighty By Manly Wade Wellman with an introduction by David Drake In the 1930s, a very unusual tale appeared in the influential Amazing Stories magazine. Unlike the usual yarns of robots and interstellar travel, this “Battle in the Dawn” featured the brutal exploits of Hok, the first hero of humanity, in his struggles against the savage Neanderthals. Written by rising pulpster Manly Wade Wellman (Who Fears the Devil?), who would later achieve fame for his American folktales of Silver John and beat out William Faulkner for a prestigious writing award, the story and its brave hero struck a chord with Amazing’s readers, and several additional adventures followed, taking Hok through the prehistory of mankind to battle unrelenting cavemen, explore the lost city of Atlantis, discover new technology, and chart a new destiny for humanity. Now, for the first time ever, Planet Stories presents a complete authorized collection of all of Wellman’s rare Hok the Mighty tales, packed with unfinished story fragments, all-new illustrations, and a brand new introduction written by Wellman’s longtime friend, fantasy author David Drake! |

Howard Foundation’s board of directors has been hard at work this summer, and Foundation members will start reaping the rewards this fall. The most exciting news is that several new items by Howard have been unearthed. Friends of REH and Legacy Circle members will find two of these “new” items in the Fall Newsletter. While doing some research on Brownwood this year, Rob Roehm stumbled upon two previously undocumented, humorous items by Howard. Unknown to bibliographers, scholars, and fans, both will make their first appearance since the 1920s in the next Newsletter. Sign up now! As the year ends, the Newsletter will begin featuring items discovered by Paul Herman in the Tevis Clyde Smith Collection at Texas A&M. Several of these have never been published and were completely unknown. Thanks to Paul’s digging, we now have one new poem, one new letter, and one new drawing. And there may be even more interesting finds as he sorts through the stacks. Support the Foundation by becoming a member. The Foundation will use annual membership fees to reach its missions and goals. The different levels of membership are: $20 – as a Supporting Member you will receive a 10% discount on REHF and REH Foundation Press (REHFP) books and merchandise. $50 – as a Friend of REH you will receive the member discount above as well as the REHF newsletter, and your name posted (if wanted) on the website. $100 – Legacy Circle members will receive all the above, along with invitations to special events, plus a yearly REHF pin. Hard Case Crime / Dorchester Publishing Those of you who are tuned in to goings-on in the publishing industry may have seen the announcement last week from Dorchester Publishing that they've decided to get out of the business of publishing mass-market paperback novels (the main business they've been in for the past 40 years). Instead, they've announced they're only going to publish ebooks and a limited number of larger trade paperbacks, using a 'print on demand' process. What does this have to do with Hard Case Crime? Well, for the past six years, Dorchester has been the company that has printed and distributed our books. They're a first-rate company run by good people, and I'm sorry to see them going through tough times. I'm also sorry to see them stop publishing books in our format. What does this mean for us? Well, either we'll need to switch from the smaller "mass market" format to the larger "trade" format, or we'll need to start working with another publisher, or both. (Most likely both, but we'll see.) It'll take a little while for this all to get sorted out, and I apologize for delays in the meantime. Our August title, Brett Halliday's MURDER IS MY BUSINESS, has shipped to booksellers and is available right now. I'd encourage you to grab a copy while you can -- it's a terrific book (with a gorgeous Robert McGinnis cover), and it'll be the last new Hard Case Crime book you'll see for a while. The next two -- QUARRY'S EX by Max Allan Collins and CHOKE HOLD by Christa Faust -- will not be coming out in October and March as planned. They will come out -- but probably not till sometime later next year. We'll keep you posted as soon as we know when. And you'll be glad to know we're already at work on subsequent titles. It's too early to spill the beans about what they are -- but it looks like books #69 and #70 will actually be by the same author, one well known to readers of our line. The former will be a reprint, the latter a brand-new book, and both are very exciting. As soon as I can let the cat out of the bag (once the ink is dry on the contracts!), you'll hear more. After that? Well, you won't be seeing a new book every month, but I expect you'll continue to see a handful of new Hard Case Crime titles each year, and rest assured they'll be good ones. Stay tuned to your email for news and announcements (also not every month -- but every time we've got news to share, I promise). And if you're a member of the Hard Case Crime Book Club, I'd say don't cancel that subscription just yet -- again, it's too early to talk about what we've got in store, but a neat idea has surfaced for a way to keep the books coming and if it works out, I think you're going to like it. (I know I'm excited about it.) In the meantime, I want to thank you all for your years of support and your passion for our books -- it feels good to know so many of you are as excited about these books as I am, and (circumstances permitting) I'm looking forward to bringing you more of them for years to come. Best, Charles Ardai, Editor |

The Lion of Cairo by Scott Oden - Coming December 7, 2010! On the banks of the ageless Nile, from a palace of gold and lapis lazuli, the young Fatimid Caliph Rashid al-Hasan rules as a figurehead over a crumbling empire. Cairo is awash in intrigues. In the shadow of the Gray Mosque, generals and emirs jockey for position under the scheming eyes of the powerful grand vizier, Jalal; in the crowded Souk, these factions use murder and terror to silence their opposition. Egypt bleeds and the scent draws her enemies in like sharks: Shirkuh, the swaggering Kurd who serves the pious and severe Sultan of Damascus, and Amalric, the Christian king of Jerusalem whose insatiable greed knows no bounds. Yet, the Caliph of Cairo has an unexpected ally—an old man who lives on a remote Asian mountaintop, a place where eagles fear to tread. This benefactor, the Shaykh al-Jabal, the Old Man of the Mountain, holds the ultimate power of life and death over the warring factions of the Moslem world, and he sends his greatest weapon into Egypt. He sends Caliph Rashid al-Hasan, a single man. An Assassin. The one they call the Emir of the Knife . . . Hard
Case Crime - Coming in August and beyond! August 2010 MURDER IS MY BUSINESS by Brett Halliday, Cover art by Robert McGinnis Ten years ago, private eye Mike Shayne did a job for one of the richest men in El Paso, digging up dirt on a boy courting the tycoon’s daughter. Now the daughter’s back, all grown up and dangerous. And so’s Shayne—but this time it’s to investigate murder... October 2010 QUARRY'S EX by Max Allan Collins, Cover art by Gregory Manchess Even the enigmatic hit man called Quarry had to start somewhere. And for him that was the day he returned stateside from Nam to find his young wife cheating. He’d killed plenty overseas, so killing her lover was no big deal. And when he was recruited to use his skills as a contract killer, that transition was easy, too. He survived in this jungle as he had in that other one—by expecting trouble. March 2011 CHOKE HOLD by Christa Faust, Cover art by Glen Orbik Angel Dare went into Witness Protection to escape her past—not as a porn star, but as a killer who took down the sex slavery ring that destroyed her life. But sometimes the past just won’t stay buried. When a former co-star is murdered, it’s up to Angel to get his son, a hotheaded MMA fighter, safely through the unforgiving Arizona desert, shady Mexican bordertowns, and the seductive neon mirage of Las Vegas... NEWS: As digital books continue to gain market share, one of the country's oldest mass paperback publishers is abandoning its traditional print books and making its titles available in digital format and print-on-demand only. Dorchester Publishing Inc., a closely held book and magazine house, said it is making the switch after its book unit sales fell 25% last year, in part because of declining orders from some of its key retail accounts, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Hard Case Crime, an imprint owned by closely held Winterfall LLC, said it may seek to move its mystery books from Dorchester to another publishing house. "It's been a good run, but if they aren't publishing mass market paperbacks, we'll have to decide what to do. I'm a believer in the mass format, but I do understand the reality of the marketplace," said Charles Ardai, who owns Hard Case Crime."" The Wall Street Journal |

The Shadow - Quentin Tarantino to direct new feature film? Rumors are circling the Internet that Quentin Tarantino may be directing a new Shadow movie. However, when asked for comment on this report, an official representative of Tarantino said "There is no truth to this story." Earlier this year, Latino Review reported that Sony sold the rights to The Shadow to 20th Century Fox. The report stated that Sam Raimi, who had been attached to the project for years, but had never done anything with it, had passed the directing reigns on to David Slade (30 Days of Night, Twilight: Eclipse). The Shadow script is reported to currently be out for a rewrite.
