Sax Rohmer's  Pyramid Editions
Updated 26 January 2006

From the 35¢ Insidious Doctor Fu Manchu in January 1961 to the $1.25 Re-Enter Fu Manchu in November 1976, Pyramid Books in New York published paperback editions of nineteen of Sax Rohmer's books: the thirteen Fu Manchu novels (in three distinct issues and multiple printings) and six other titles. Because of their large printings, the books in this nearly sixteen year run are probably the most widely distributed and widely read editions of Rohmer's works.

The first Pyramid Fu Manchu issue (the G- and F- stock numbers and some of the R- numbers in the following list) had covers by a variety of artists, not following any uniform design or style. The second issue (the R- and X- stock numbers) all had covers by Len Goldberg in a uniform design: a Fu Manchu head dominating an action vignette against a single-color background. In the third issue, the volumes were sequentially numbered and had cover designs by Richard Krepel in a uniform format: a Fu Manchu head and action scene framed against a white background. On the page facing the title page, a list of the books in the series was somewhat peculiarly labeled "The Adventures of Nayland Smith."

Stock numbers  marked with an asterisk (*) in the following list also had Canadian printings.  It is likely that many other numbers did also.

In addition to all the Fu Manchu titles, six additional novels were published.

Quest of the Sacred Slipper R-1313 1st April 1966 J. Lombardero

Brood of the Witch Queen R-1314 1st May 1966 J. Lombardero

At least one additional title was planned but never published. Robert Weinberg owns the original J. Lombardero painting for what would have been the Pyramid edition of The Bat Flies Low. It's quite easy to imagine the missing text.

Many of the later editions included the photograph by Sasha on the back cover.

Notes: As the publication dates indicate, in all three of the Fu Manchu issues some titles were published out of their correct chronological sequence.

The variant spelling of artist Ronnie (Ronny) Lesser's first name is as given on the back covers of the books.

The above list incorporates material compiled by R. E. Briney published in Collecting Paperbacks? 4:2 (#20), September 1982, pp. 24-27.
