This book is the same as the 1923 Konishi Shoten edition. Aizu Shingo reports, "It seems that Konishi Shoten failed in1924 and they transfered copyrights to Seikokan."

1931 Akuna Hakase [Devil Doctor] [Also contains] Aikoku Kyoto-Den [Romance of the Patriotic Thief = The Sins of Severac Bablon].Translated by Terada Kanae. Tokyo: Kaizo-Sha. 6 by 4 inches.

The book begins with a "prologue" describing how Fu Manchu came to be an avenger. It then begins as a loose translation of chapters 1 to 23 of The Return of Fu Manchu. This portion is followed by text which follows the movie story line.

Aizu Shingo reports that "This title is found in Shibunkaku's 'preparation' book advertisement for the1939 season, but I don't know whether it was published or not. Because of changes in political situation, crime fiction boom suddenly cooled down in 1939. So I suppose this book was not published."

Minetaro Yamanaka rewrote and re-titled Terada Kanae's translation (Akuna Hakase) for juvenile readers. In this version, Fu Manchu is shot to death by Karamaneh in the final chapter.
Volume 4 of the "World Famous Detective Novels" series. The dust jacket is illustrated by Hideto Maki and there are numerous interior illustrations by Takashi Ariyasu.
